~Quote from A. J. Lawless

Life is gray & dull, & all i see is dark,

stay by my side & i'll be there no matter what,

though the snow falls faster, & the wind blows louder still,

i'll be there by you're side, to blow away the chill.

Pearl looked inside & gasped.  Sitting there in plain view, was her father's map.

Pearl took the yellowed paper in her hands &.  She scanned it, her grip shaking h .  This was it.  The key to finding the Winter Rider.

Pearl’s vision was beginning to blur when she heard a noise.  It sounded a bit like shifting snow.  “Wonder what that is.”  She thought vaguely.  She was only aware of the cold now, & the blackness that was gradually pulling her down into its depths.  Her eyes were beginning to close.  Suddenly the snow around her crumbled away, revealing Carl’s pale worried face & Snowdust’s right beside him.  “Pearl!”  He exclaimed when he saw her.  Pearl tried to let out a cry of relief, but instead spit out a mouthful of snow.  Then she groaned.  Snowdust let out a cry at seeing her rider, & in a few seconds had thrown away the rest of the snow still covering her body.  As soon as her body was free, Carl lifted her out of the snow.  He hugged her tight, then cradled her in his arms.  “Pearl, what were you thinking?  You almost died!  I never would have found you if it wasn’t for Snowdust.”  Pearl didn’t answer for a while.  She was still shocked by what had happened.  She just laid there, shivering, gasping in breath after breath of cold mountain air.  Finally her breathing returned to normal & she answered.

“I-I’m s-s-sorry C-Carl.  I-I wasn’t t-t-t-thinking.  Th-This w-was all my f-fault.  I-I w-was so caught up in f-finding t-the rider that I-I forgot about e-everything e-else.”  Carl’s face softened.  “Don’t feel bad.  Its partly my fault too.  I’m sorry for getting upset.  It wasn’t ok for me to blame you.  I just……I thought i had lost you.  I don’t know what i would have done if my best friend had died.”  Even after all that had happened, Pearl was able to muster a weary smile.  “You could never get rid of me that easily.”  Carl smiled, not a smirk, but a relieved, happy smile.  “I can see your well enough to be cracking shrewd jokes.  Could you promise me you’ll never do that again?”  Pearl smiled, her eyes half-closed.  “Sure.  I promise.”  Carl looked relieved.  “Good.  Now, we’d better get back to the campsite.  No doubt everyone else heard the avalanche & is wondering where we are.”  “You’re right.  We’d better get going.”  Pearl tried pushing herself to her feet, but fell back into Carl’s lap, too weak to stand.  Carl instantly helped her up.  “You’re too weak to ride on your own.  You’ll ride with me & Zander.”
Pearl looked indignant.  “I can ride Snowdust by myself!”  Carl frowned.  “You may be the one in charge, but this time, you need to listen to me.  And you are riding with me & Zander.”  Pearl grumbled a bit, but didn’t protest anymore as Carl hoisted her up onto Zander, with help from Snowdust.  Then when she was comfortably settled, the little group took off, flying back towards the cave where everyone would be waiting.
“You did WHAT?!?!”  Pearl sat shivering, wrapped in a blanket in front of a fire with Carl by her side, his arm wrapped around her shoulder.  She & Carl had made it back to the camp by dawn without any problems.  Once there, everyone had demanded to know what had happened, but Carl insisted that Pearl rested before she told them anything.  They were all extremely peeved.  Even now Ida stood over her, scowling at them.  Pearl nodded wearily.  “Yes, you heard me right.  I snuck out of camp with Carl to spy on the Winter rider.”  “But, why? Why did you go without us?  Do you not trust us?!”  “Now hold on,”  Carl interjected.  “Pearl’s been through a lot.  She just nearly died for Thor’s sake!  You can’t just….”  Pearl stopped him.  “No Carl, she’s right.  I did leave all of you out.  I’m sorry.”  Henry nodded, understanding what she had said.  “Thank you for apologizing Pearl.  But you can’t just run off when we’re all a team!  A team works together.  If we’re a team, we need to stick together.”  Robin shyly agreed.  “Henry’s right.  If we are a team, we need to work together like one.”
Pearl sighed, exhausted.  “You’re all right.  We’re all a team.  I can’t do things on my own anymore.  It’s not right to leave all of you out.”  She sneezed & huddled closer to the fire.  “If all of you had been out there, we may have had the rider right now.”  Henry placed a hand on her shoulder.  “Maybe.  But thats in the past.  Right now we need to focus on moving forward.  So, do you have a plan?”  Snowdust had now come over now, & was nuzzling her head against Pearl’s hand.  She smiled & stroked her white head.  “I couldn’t have said it better.  Alright, heres the plan.  We can leave later this morning to travel to the island of Misery, from there we can…”  Carl stopped her.  “Woah, slow down.  Pearl, you’re still too weak to travel.  You don’t have the energy to make the journey, much less face the rider if we find him.  we have to stay here until you’ve recovered enough to travel.”  Pearl groaned.  “Come on Carl.  I can take care of myself.”
“You know, Carl is right Pearl.”  Ida interjected, still a bit peeved.  “You just got dug out from an avalanche.  You didn’t just go get yourself bruised or something.  I’m no healer, but you’ll have to rest.”  Pearl scowled.  “Great, now everyones against me.”  Carl sighed.  “You know what, how about this.  We stay here for the rest of the day, & tonight we head for the islands.  Does that sound like a fair deal?”  Pearl flopped back against Snowdust’s back.  “I guess i don’t really have a choice.  Alright, we can stay for the rest of the day.  But we leave just before sunset, no later!”
Pearl stretched, relieved.  She & the rest of the group were sailing across the pink streaked sky towards the islands of Misery.  Pearl never recalled being this excited to do anything before.  She’d been cooped up all day by the fire, & now they were finally on their way to The islands of Misery!  She hummed a happy little tune as Snowdust flew across the ocean.  This time, she’d finally find the rider.  She’d make him give back all the stuff he’d stolen from her father, then return home with her friends & hopefully not be punished too much.  Snowdust seemed as happy as she was.  She bayed, flipped over, then righted herself & stuck her tongue out to flap in the wind.  Pearl giggled.  “Wow, you might be even more excited then i am.”  She scratched the spot under her chin that Snowdust loved to be scratched the most.
“Don’t worry girl.”  She whispered.  “Soon we’ll be home again.  And when we are, i’ll make sure to give you a nice pile of trout & a long rubdown.”  Suddenly Henry, who had been leading the group on Windhurtle, stopped mid-flight.  Pearl pulled on Snowdust’s saddle hard, so not to run into Carl, who was flying in front of her.  “We’re here!”  Henry shouted.  Pearl looked ahead after henry’s announcement, & nearly gasped out loud.  They had finally arrived at the islands of Misery.
