~Quote from A. J. Lawless

Life is gray & dull, & all i see is dark,

stay by my side & i'll be there no matter what,

though the snow falls faster, & the wind blows louder still,

i'll be there by you're side, to blow away the chill.

Pearl looked inside & gasped.  Sitting there in plain view, was her father's map.

Pearl took the yellowed paper in her hands &.  She scanned it, her grip shaking h .  This was it.  The key to finding the Winter Rider.

“Go on a big adventure, that sounded fun.  face perilous danger, exciting.  Catch the Winter Rider, Awesome idea.  WHERE IS WHAT I WAS PROMISED?!?”  Pearl groaned.  “Carl, close your mouth and stop talking.  We all know your bored.  We’ve only been flying for a day.”  Carl looked thoroughly annoyed.  “A day, a DAY?!?  we’ve been flying no stop for what seems like WEEKS!  Since nearly midnight yesterday after we left Berk & stopped on Sleiphir island, we’ve been flying non-stop! We only slept for an hour!”  “Thats right!  We were only supposed to sleep for a half hour!  We’ve lost time already!”  Everyone groaned.

“Come on Pearl.”  Carl begged.  “We’ve been flying since last night.  Why are we trying to get there so fast anyway?  The island’s still going to be there when we reach it.”  Pearl sighed.  “I thought you knew this Carl.  We’re flying like this so we can get away from the riders!  They can’t catch us.  Thats why we stopped on Sleiphir island, to throw them off our trail.”  Robin sat bolt upright.  “They’re following us?!?!?”  Pearl shook her head.  “Nope, not anymore.”  She pulled out the map.  “According to this map, we were supposed to go north-west to the Curtain’s of Valhalla.  If I’m right Hiccup would have expected us to stop on dragon island or one of the surrounding islands.  Instead we headed to Sleiphir island, which is in the opposite direction.”
“You mean we’ve been flying the wrong direction this entire time?!?!”  Ida shrieked.  Pearl laughed.  “of course not!  Only last night so we could get a lot of ocean between us & the riders search party.”  Carl held his head in his hands.  “Oh Thor help us.  So, where are you taking us now?  Back to Berk?  To auction island?  Or maybe your taking us south so we can enjoy the sunshine, hmm?”  Pearl scowled at him.  “First of all, i’d watch what you say to the rider on a Strike class dragon.  Second, I know exactly where we're going.”  She looked down on the map.  “According to my dad’s map, the flight to the Curtain’s of Valhalla is a long trip.  There is only one stop on the way, a small island called, Good Hope.”  Ida snorted.  “Thats appropriate.”  Pearl ignored her & went on.  “That's the only stop before venturing through the curtain.  Once we get there, we’ll rest for the night, gather our strength & go through the veil in the morning.”
Henry had been listening quietly the whole time, but now he spoke up.  “If what your saying is true, this curtain must be thick & nearly impossible to get through.  Whats on the other side?”  Pearl looked down.  “Ummm….It looks like an island called Peko-Peko.”  Carl made a funny face.  “Peko-Peko?  HA!  Thats the most ridiculous name i’ve ever heard.”  He laughed.  Pearl rolled her eyes.  “The same could be said about Berk Carl.”  Pearl pulled out a notebook & flipped through it.  She stopped at a yellowed page with the words Peko-Peko at the top,  “Ok, I had enough sense to take my father’s journal before i met you guys.  It records all the things he’s seen while on his trips.”  she quickly started to read.  “Peko-Peko is an island mostly inhabited by humans.  Its a trading island, mostly, & is a trading stop for people of all kinds before they try to go through the curtain.  Mostly a rough town, but the only civilization on the entire island, Damascus is one of the best places to grab a cup of ale.”
Carl grinned.  “Sounds interesting.  I’d love to try some of that ale your dad’s talking about.”  “Not the point Carl.”  Ida hissed.  “we’re supposed to find the rider, not go drinking in some pub.”  Robin shivered.  “It sounds dangerous.  Is there anywhere else to stay?”  Pearl looked at the map again.  “Theres only one other place, an island called Beare.”  Carl snickered again.  “Thats even worse then the first!”  Pearl flipped through her father’s notebook once more.  “It says here theres nothing but rocks & more rocks.  Only a little vegetation & no wildlife.”  Robin clapped her hands.  “There!  Its settled then.  We’ll camp there!”  Henry seemed skeptical.  “I don’t know.  Is there anything else?”  Pearl shook her head.  “No.”  She closed the book & tucked it into her saddle bag.  “I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t.  We can camp there after emerging from the curtain.  But for now, lets just concentrate on getting to Good Hope.  We can plan the rest from there.”
Seven hours later, the group landed on the small island called Good Hope, named for the hope sailors had before they sailed through the Curtain’s of Valhalla.  It was a small island with no trees.  It was mostly moor, with small bushes poking up here & there along the way.  The only dragons there were groups of friendly nadders & Terrible Terrors that wouldn’t give them much trouble.  Exhausted, the group collapsed in a small slope in the earth, underneath a cliff that would provide some shelter against the wind.  The group was so tired, they couldn’t even set up the tents.  Even they’re dragons were worn out from the long flight across the ocean.
Pearl collapsed against Snowdust’s side.  Everyone else did the same, not talking as they pulled out their saddle bags & ate their meal, dried beef strips & crackers in silence.  Finally Robin spoke up.  “So, about finding this rider….what will we do when we find him?”  Pearl looked up from the meager meal she had been eating.  “Well…..I’m not exactly sure.  I was planning on confronting him & asking him why he stole my father’s cargo.”  “But what if he doesn’t want to talk?”  Pearl stopped.  “Well…..I’m not really sure Robin.  I just don’t know.”  Everyone was silent for awhile.  Finally Carl arched his back & yawned.  “Oh, I’m tired.  we’d better get some sleep.  Whos with me?”  Everyone half heartedly mumbled in agreement.  They all layed against their dragons & soon, one by one, they fell asleep.
Pearl tossed and turned, muttering and groaning.  Finally, she gave up the vain attempt to sleep & walked up over the rise & sat on the small cliff overlooking the ocean.  She sighed.  She jumped when she heard a noise.  “Pssst, Pearl, is that you?”  Pearl turned to see Carl climbing up over the rise.  “Oh, hi Carl.  Yeah, its me.  I couldn’t sleep.”  “Me neither.  You make a lot of noise.  Next time i’ll remember not to sleep next to you & Snowdust.”  he walked up next to her.  “Is this spot taken?”  Pearl looked down at her feet.  “No.  Go ahead.”  Carl sat down next to her.  “Now, would you mind telling me whats wrong?  You’re usually the first person asleep.”
Pearl shook her head.  “No no, its nothing, trust me.”  “Try me.”  Pearl sighed.  “I............I was just thinking about what Robin said.  What if shes right?  What if the rider doesn’t want to talk?  What if….What if one of you gets hurt because of me?”  Pearl bit her lip, not wanting to go on.  Carl’s arm curled around her & pulled her into a hug.  “Pearl, you & me both know that's not true.  If one of us does happen to get hurt, it won't be because of you.  You’re a great leader, even if you are a little stubborn & grumpy at times.”  Pearl giggled, the tension she had felt not a moment earlier gone.  “Thanks Carl, I needed that.”  Carl grinned.  “Anytime.  Now lets go get some sleep.  We’ve got a long day ahead of us tomorrow.”
