"Her soul was too deep to explore by those who always swam in the shallow end."

~Quote from A. J. Lawless

Life is gray & dull, & all i see is dark,

stay by my side & i'll be there no matter what,

though the snow falls faster, & the wind blows louder still,

i'll be there by you're side, to blow away the chill.

Pearl looked inside & gasped.  Sitting there in plain view, was her father's map.

Pearl took the yellowed paper in her hands &.  She scanned it, her grip shaking h .  This was it.  The key to finding the Winter Rider.

"Pearl, Pearl!"  Someone was calling her.  Who was it?  what did they want?  Pearl shook it off.  Then something heavy pushed down on her chest, forcing her to spit out mouthfuls of smelly, sour tasting water.  She coughed for a awhile, then slumped back downward and groaned.  "She's alive!"  Someone exclaimed.  Pearl let out a fit of coughing, then opened her eyes.  Chief Hiccup stood over her, Carl standing behind him.  Pearl tried to get up, but failed and slumped back down to the ground.  "Don't get up."  Hiccup said.  "You've been through alot."

Pearl groaned.  "Wha?  What happened?  Where am I?"  Carl knelt down next to her.  "You got knocked off Snowdust and nearly drowned.  Hiccup rescued you just in time and brought you back here."  Pearl suddenly remembered.  She tried to sit up again.  "Snowdust!  Where's snowdust?"  Carl gestured to the group of dragons resting in the weak morning sunlight.  "Snowdust is resting with the other dragons.  She's a bit battered, but fine."  Pearl sighed.  "Good.  I've got to go see her."  Hiccup pushed her back down.

"I said to sit still.  Do you realize how much trouble your in?"  Pearl's anger spilled over.  "I was only trying to help!  Why else do you think I came out here?!?!!"  Hiccup was starting to lose his temper.  "Pearl, I told you we had everything under control."  "It didn't look that way, or you would have brought the winter rider in by now!"  Hiccup finally lost it.  "Do you realize what you've done?  You nearly killed yourself!  Not only that, but you put the lives of your friends, their dragons, and your own in danger!"

Pearl stopped.  She hadn't thought of that.  She looked around her at her friends.  Carl had a red mark on the Side of his face, and a bump was forming on his head.  Ida had some scratch marks on her arms and she had torn her pants and dress.  Robin was shaking, obviously terrified by the whole experience, and Henry was wrapped up in a blanket,  being tended to by one of the other riders.  Even she was a mess.  She was wet, cold, and miserable.  Pearl turned back to hiccup.  "I'm....I'm sorry.  I didn't mean for any of this to happen!"  Hiccup rubbed his temples and sighed.  "I know Pearl, but this is serious.  Come on, we'd better get you all home.  Your parents have been worried sick."

Pearl sighed a low, defeated sigh.  "Here."  Carl offered.  "Let me help you up."  Carl helped Pearl to her feet.  "Do you need a ride?  You still seem very shaken, and snowdust is still too tired for the flight back."  Pearl nodded.  "Thanks Carl, that means alot."  Carl smiled weakly.  "Anytime Pearl."  He helped her up onto zander.  "Lets all go back to Berk.  I can only imagine what's waiting for us there."

"I'm so sorry about this chief."  Marilyn Garmadon apologized.  "I'll make sure this doesn't happen again."  Hiccup smiled. "Thank you Mrs. Garmadon.  I'll be around later today just to make sure everything is in order.  Again, I'm sorry about this."  Marilyn shook her head.  "No no, we're sorry.  Thank you for bringing her back safe and sound."  Hiccup nodded.  "Your welcome.  Good day."  He walked off, followed close behind by toothless.  Marilyn closed the door slowly, then scowled at her daughter.  "Pearl, I NEVER want to hear about anything like this again, you understand?"  "But mom, I was only trying to..."

"Quiet!"  Pearl jumped at the sound of her father's voice.  "Dad, I-I...."  her father held up his hand.  "NO.  I don't want to hear a word out of your mouth for the rest of the day, understand?"  Pearl nodded.  "Yes dad.  But I...."  her father scowled.  "No, I don't want to hear anything.  You do realize what you've done?  You've disgraced me, your mother, the whole family. You've put innocent people in danger.  That Henderson kid, your best friend, could have died because of your foolish actions!"  Pearl bit her lip to keep from crying.  She had never heard her father speak this way.  She couldn't remember feeling this awful, not when she had hurt her leg after a flight with snowdust, not the time she had gotten hit with a dragon hunter arrow, not even earlier when she nearly drowned.

Pearl looked away.  "I'm sorry dad.  I didn't mean for this to happen."  Her father frowned.  "I'd hope so.  Now go to your room.  Me and your mother will figure out an appropriate punishment for you later."  Pearl ran up the stairs to her room, the tears running free now.  "All I wanted to do was help."  She thought to herself, sniffling.  "All I wanted to do was help."  Pearl collapsed onto her bed & cried for awhile.  She cried untill she couldn't cry any longer.  When she finally stopped,  She looked downward.  Her golden locket gleamed in the weak Sun & candlelight.  She took the golden heart in her hand and rubbed it between her thumb and finger. She knew her father didn't mean to be so harsh on her.  She knew he'd probably apologize later.  But his words still stung like the sting of a speed stinger.  What was going to happen now?
