"Well if thats what it is, then its working." Sunset admitted, sighing. She didnt want to second-guess her decisions, but she really needed to consider carefully now. "Its just...everything about animus dragons is so complicated, their magic included. Trying to figure out what i need to do basically draws down to not k.illing somebody, but i did." She said.

"On accident though. Besides, if all you think about is not using your magic, you'll freeze up, panic, and then end up using it anyways. So breathe. Knowing to not use your magic is the start. But what will you do instead? Think through scenarios without magic. Then it'll be easier in the thick of battle."

Sunset felt her breathing had quicken just a bit, so she took some deep breaths. He was right, she HAD to stop thinking about it or it would just get worse. "Wow...what a game changer. Do i need to remind you that you've already gotten pretty far through your soul?" That animus. Again. Sunset narrowed her eyes. "Stop haunting me." She thought. "Oh I'm not haunting, after all i DO want you to find me." The animus hissed, laughing. "Is this just a game to you?!" Sunset thought. "On the contrary, its far from a game. Alas though, would your queen be proud of the d.eath you caused?" The animus said. Sunset felt herself shoot upright. "DONT TALK ABOUT HER!" She yelled in her head. "Oh wow, mad? Far from a perfect animus." The animus laughed and for once, Sunset could make out an outline of a dragon in her thoughts.

Sunset felt a shiver go down her spine as the animus laughed one more time, this time at Abyssal's comment and left. Sunset snapped back to reality and shook herself, getting herself under control, though she was sure she wasn't doing a good job

"Wait until Heather and Robin wake up, then to the next island." Sunset said, flicking her wing at their sleeping friends. She looked out over to the water and sighed. That animus sure did know how to get to her, and she didn't like how easy it was to get to her. She let out a soft growl of annoyance

Sunset felt pain pulse in her head and she yelped. Sunset nearly fell over from the after effect of dizziness, stumbling around for a second. "Ugh, stupid animus." Sunset muttered, sitting back down

Sunset felt something nagging at her. Why is she having so many pains? Carefully, she excused herself and got her journal out of her bag, flipping to long-lasting spells she'd written down. She paused when she reached a certain page. "Possession spell: often caused when an animus wants to make somebody else do their dirty work, can be signaled by pains in the skull from failed attempts as the animus needs to be in range with a dragon to possess. Dangerous on all levels!" Sunset felt a wave of nervousness go over her, her expression changing to shock.

Heather and Robin were both finally awake and it was about time to leave. Robin finished scoffing his prey and Heather took a bite of an apple then a sip of her stimulant and both came to stand by the others, ready to head off.

Scorpion widened his eyes at Sunset. What did that journal say that made her so mad? He walked over and sat down next to Sunset, giving her a comforting smile. Sunset frowned and turned to Abyssal. "I'm ready, Scorpion what about you?" Sunset asked. Scorpion nodded. "I'm ready too." He said.

'Thanks,' he said in chorus with Heather. Heather sounded a little less good then him though, like she had barely slept. At least she sounded awake. Robin really hoped that wasn't because of the stimulant she was holding.

'You should all have another sip of these,' the RainWing said, handing them out.

'I'm ready,' she said after handing out all the stimulants. She tried not to think of her dreams and focused all her attention on the real world. She winced at the bars of pain in her head, refraining from showing any other sign of pain.

'Me too,' Robin said, putting his wing near her back. She realised that the hybrid had picked up on her emotions. He's not quite as good as me, but he is a bit of an empath. He just doesn't use it to it's full extent like I do. Another sign of a great healer. She smiled. She was excited to train the MudWing/SkyWing. She didn't even let the thoughts that they might not make it through this journey alive enter her head. She noticed Sunset looking uncomfortable and walked a little closer to her, not quite sure what to do or say. It was rather obvious the animus was not being the best of company towards her.

'I'm also ready,' said the trio behind them.

She kept flying, ignoring the voice in her head.

You can't ignore me forever. Not if you want guidance towards me... or I can just leave.

The voice had actually been pretty silent for once though. However it still wanted them to get closer, which wasn't a good thing.

Oh and by the way you have to. Because if you disobey me, I have something else in mind for you.

And what's that? she asked, knowing the animus wouldn't tell her. She didn't particularly care what else the animus had in mind for her.

Animus magic has no limits young dragon. It could be anything. Death would not be plentiful for me.

Why me?! she asked, putting all of her anger, agression and hatred into her voice.

I don't know why you're so mad at me. I'm helping you with what you need, to get to me. There's literally no downside for you.

Except that I have a STUPID voice nagging at me and threatening me until I end you, she hissed back in her mind. She kept her expression blank, but red was creeping into her scales. Another bar of pain flashed through her head.

Until you end me? That's new. I thought you weren't a fighter.
I can be, whatever I want to be, she muttered to the animus.
You'll be useful to me either way, the voice said, then stopped. A load of pain crashed down on her and she struggled to stay aloft, digging her claws into Fawn's wing. The MudWing hybrid yelped and tossed her off, then looked down, realisation dawning in her eyes. Fawn dived down and grabbed her talon, but the runt was too weak. Heather managed to beat her wings until she was somewhat in the sky again, but she couldn't keep the pain at bay. Her scales started fogging over with white, until she finally pushed through and flew back up, facing the pain with all her strength.
Character development, the animus mused quietly. And then there was no more noise from her head, and the pain faded astonishingly quickly. She breathed in, removing her talon from Fawn's grip.

Sunset saw Heather's distress. "Heather! Are you ok?" Sunset cried, soaring to Heather. She felt even more nervous at the sight of Heather. "WHY are you doing this? I already know you're trying a possession spell on me, right?" Sunset growled to the animus in her head. "Smart. I was wondering when you would figure it out." The animus hissed, slightly amused. "Yea, yea. Well, it wont work." Sunset muttered outloud.

Abyssal heard a commotion behind him and twisted to see Heather falling. He banked to the side, diving to her level as she regained her balance. Her scales showed a color which he thought showed pain. That's wasn't good... "What's going on?" He asked, positioning himself to the side and below her, ready to catch her if she fell again.

Sunset felt nervous. "I dont know...but maybe the animus came back." She said. The animus in her head hissed in delight. Sunset nudged Heather gently. "If that's what it is then just ignore him." She said, her wings twitching slightly as the animus barked a laugh. "IGNORE ME? Please, you're funny." The animus said, still hissing with laughter. Sunset shrugged, deciding that that animus wasnt going to keep her back. She felt her bag slightly heavier and looked in to see the thrown journal back in. "What the..." Sunset muttered. "Heh, did you seriously think i wasnt going to bring that back to you?" The animus hissed. "You just want me to be throughal worried about possession spells, right?" Sunset thought. "Ehhh pretty much." The animus said. Sunset shoved the journal in roughly, hoping that it tore in the process, snapping a low growl. She flicked her head up to the sky, flattening her ears. Possession spell or no hanging over her head, she had to end this.

She was overwhelmed with what everyone was saying, but felt a small sense of comfort at Sunset's words. She stayed quiet, pushing out any colours of white or green; pain or shock, and fear. She closed her eyes, hoping there wasn't a colour for 'overwhelmed' that was creeping over her. She'd never felt like this before... she dived down then swept up again, closer to the front then before. She didn't say anything; she didn't have to. But she gave a nod of acknowledgment to all of them.

Sunset looked at Heather and smiled. She was ok. That was good. She growled in annoyance with herself. "Stay on course, Sunset." She muttered. She looked at Abyssal, Robin, and Scorpion. This is what she was fighting for. Her expression changed to a frown and she turned her head back as the animus started spourting random facts. She ended up clutching her head as a headache burst in.

Robin met Sunset's gaze and smiled reassuringly. It was kind of forced but it was worth it. He flew up closer to her.

'How are you doing with this whole journey?' he asked, switching onto another wind current. It might have been just a little too fast, because he had to restrain himself from bashing into Sunset. He dipped down and flipped onto another air current, gliding more stably this time.

Sunset frowned. "Its...hard to describe how I'm feeling. At first, i felt happy when i was doing something to help at the beginning, but then when it got worse and worse, it changed and finally it feels like my feelings tipped over the edge with Elder Cactus' d.eath. I cant control myself sometimes now." Sunset said. "It makes me wonder...am i slowly losing it and going soulless under everybody's watch?" She said.

She heard what Sunset was saying and tipped her wings to listen. She didn't feel like engaging in the conversation quite yet, but she did want to hear what Robin had to say to Sunset's straight reply.

'Sunset, listen to me,' he said, and Heather perked her ears.
'If you think you're going soulless because of whatever that animus is telling you, then ignore it. It won't seem easy to ignore at first, especially if they threaten you, but.. if they say that you're losing your soul or anything along those lines, don't respond to them. Don't even bother getting angry at them. They'll like that, and more importantly use it against you. Don't get sad either. See the light in what we're doing; we're going to be heroes! And if somebody doesn't forgive you for the d.eath of that Elder, then there's something wrong with them. And maybe some dragons won't even believe the story about the animus, but if we know what we've done then we've done it. And also, you can give them your lie detector. So they'll KNOW if your lying or not. Do you understand?'

Heather agreed with him on all lines, but she found herself astray from having the capability to follow such advice. Every time she tried.. the animus would find another route. Like last time he used pain against her.. she didn't want Sunset going through that. And she could tell certain others were struggling too; Brick thought that he could never be a hero and was too afraid to even stand in the spotlight of fame, Fawn was struggling to hide nervousness and probably thought they would all d.ie... she still hadn't picked up much about Wrath yet though. She swooped aside to listen to the conversation that he, Brick and Fawn were having...

Sunset looked down. "How can you have so much faith in an animus?" Sunset asked. She looked at Robin again. "All those stories, doesnt it scare you?" Sunset asked sadly. She remembered all the dragons running away from her terrified, wincing.

Robin found himself laughing, while smiling sadly. But at least it was genuine.

'I've never been much of a reader, but I've heard of Albatross. And yes, it does scare me. But you don't scare me Sunset. I don't know how, but I can feel your devotion to your friends and this group. I can feel all of ours'.'

He let his shoulders relax and his wings stopped beating while he soared across the sky. This really did feel like a Troop; a troop where he could finally be the BigWings. Huh.. Brick and Fawn said Heron and the others retreated further into the swamps. I wonder where he is now.

He couldn't believe that he was flying towards a Hive with only a strange SilkWing he had never met, chasing after a strange hybrid from another continent. It sounded, in opinion, absolutely insane. But he did enjoy Firefly's company. She was an unusual dragon, particularly since she grew up on Phyrria with only a d.ead SandWing for the question of her home.

'Are you sure about this?' she asked again, 'it seems.. dangerous.'
'I can't really go with anybody else. But if you want to turn back that's alright.'

He flicked his tail. The SilkWing was clearly very nervous, but she kept on pushing through because she knew she could trust Chestnut. He liked that about her; that she had such intense faith in others. He wanted to reassure her to keep going without pressuring her, but he wasn't sure how.

'No, it's fine. I don't want you to go alone,' she responded with a sad smile. He smiled back, trying to keep her hopes high. His shoulders and tail relaxed as he realised that Firefly could make the decision to stay for herself.

'I just need to get to the bottom of such a strange hybrid lingering on Pantala with a weapon. We might be on the case to stop some kind of mass murder here,' he said with a grin. Firefly looked rather ill, so he twined his tail with hers, appreciating what heat came from it. He still wondered why any heat came from it.

'Come on, we're halfway to the hives now!' he said, beating down his wings against the breeze. He launched forward and sensed Firefly following after him. He didn't go at his full pace, knowing Firefly was smaller then him, but he did keep up a swift momentum, heading right towards the heart of danger.

A whole load of Chestnut >:)

Chestnut finally twisted his tail away from Firefly’s. They had been flying for a decent amount of time now, and were practically at the hives.

‘What do we do when we land?’ Firefly asked, breaking the silence.

‘Well a hybrid will be easy to track. If it’s come in peace it’ll go right into the hives but if not.. it’ll probably sneak in.’

‘You said it was quite large and dark coloured. It wouldn’t be easy to sneak in..’

He shrugged. In all honesty he had no idea what the hybrid would do if they wanted to sneak in. Unless they could tunnel in…

‘They probably could tunnel in,’ he suggested.

‘Oh, maybe. But they’d have to get through a Tree-stuff floor.’

They cut off conversation there as they saw smoke billowing from the distance. It curled up in little waves, then merged into giant ones, shrouding the whole hive ahead; Jewel Hive.

‘What in the world?!’ Firefly asked, seeing exactly what he did. He shivered in shock.

‘Someone must’ve burnt the hives…’

Their eyes met. He knew Firefly had an interesting power; a kind of flamesilk that burnt other flamesilks as well; even Firefly couldn’t touch it, and sometimes it burnt her wrists to produce. Nobody knew what it really was, if it wasn’t flamesilk.

‘MudWings and SkyWings have fire, so whether it’s a hybrid or what it surely must’ve done this.’

He felt his wings and antennae droop. What had they got themselves caught up in?

‘Come on! We have to do something!’ she said, dragging him ahead. It was a strange feeling, the nervous healer apprentice being the brave one. He pushed his wings down and kept flying, feeling Firefly release him.

‘What could that hybrid possibly want?!’ Firefly asked.

‘They had a dagger… so if anything, they want somebody d.ead..’ he said.

‘Somebody d.ead… who would they want d.ead? Other then the Quee—‘

She cut off. He kept his wing strokes at the same pace as hers, letting their wings collide every time they would glide.

‘Do you think?’ he asked, squinting to keep his eyes from widening.

‘We have to warn her,’ Firefly murmured and dived down, switching to another current and soaring even faster. Even he was struggling to keep up now. They crashed towards the burning hive, seeing a colony of HiveWings hovering in the air. Some were diving back down, helping out others. He wanted to help, but they had no time to waste.

‘Where’s Queen Jewel?!’ he called into the crowd. He stared around waiting for somebody to answer his call, and a bright HiveWing pushed forward. He seemed to be a whole lot older then Chestnut or Firefly, nearing his adulthood.

‘I last saw her being cut off in the throne room by some hybrid!’ the HiveWing yelped, and another dragon pushed her way forward.

‘Don’t lie to them as well!’ she hissed, but Chestnut wasn’t listening anymore. He grasped Firefly’s talon and dived towards the throne room. A hybrid. The hybrid. Firefly was now speeding again, dragging him forward, and she yanked him to the once-tree-stuff floor. He dropped his wings down and tucked them in, exhausted. But Firefly’s energy kept him going, and then he saw…

Queen Jewel roared in pain as the dagger slit across her throat. Chestnut immediately pulled away from Firefly and roared in response, rising onto his hackles. He shot a vine at the dagger and pulled it out the hybrid’s grasp, then shot another around it’s neck. He dragged it to the floor, hearing a yowl of protest. Firefly ran to the Queen, staring around.

‘What can I do?!’ A voice erupted from behind them. He finally realised that the HiveWing, as well as most of the other HiveWings, had followed them.

‘Does anybody here have medical supplies?!’ Firefly yelled over the commotion.

‘I do!’ said somebody, filing forward. But the hybrid had snapped through the vine and was lunging for the dagger. Chestnut grabbed the dagger and chucked it to the HiveWing, who flew off with it quickly. The hybrid started rampaging through the crowd, but not fast enough to be attacked by many, many HiveWings.

‘Take them to the prisons!’ the female HiveWing from earlier yelped, and finally the noise level calmed a little as the Assassin was taken away. Meanwhile, a HiveWing was opening a Healers box and Firefly was searching through it. It was a good thing that she was a healer’s apprentice.

‘Eat this, Firefly said gently, giving some kind of mixture to the Queen. He noticed all the HiveWings staring and muttering from behind; who were these SilkWings? How did they know of the attack? Would their queen survive, or not?..

‘Everybody out,’ the HiveWing healer ordered.

‘Mum-‘ the HiveWing nearing adulthood started, cutting off.

‘You can stay,’ she said gently, tucking him closer to her with her wing.

As the colony of HiveWings buzzed off, Chestnut realised the Queen was now asleep… or dead…

‘Don’t worry,’ she said to all 3 dragons, ‘Jewel should be fine, if given proper treatment.’

Firefly, Chestnut and the new HiveWing nodded.

‘Who are you?’ Chestnut asked, trying to distract everybody from the bedraggled body of the Queen in front of them.

‘I’m Rosemary, and this is my son Lanternfly,’ the Healer said.

‘Lantern,’ Lanternfly groaned, but with a small smile.

‘I’m Firefly and this is Chestnut,’ Firefly replied.

‘Nice to meet you,’ Rosemary said, still wrapping a bandage around Jewel’s wound.

‘You too,’ Chestnut said.

‘That was pretty brave, using your leafspeak vines like that,’ Firefly commented, smiling at him. He lay down and Firefly sat beside him. He hadn’t even thought about that; it was just what was natural to him. To do what was right.

‘Thanks,’ he said, twining his tail with hers again. He didn’t realise how warm it was until Firefly’s heat didn’t even make a difference to him.

‘It’s so warm,’ Lantern mumbled at the same time.

‘Unsurprising, since we’re literally in the middle of a fire.’

‘The others are putting it out,’ Chestnut informed them, ‘we should go help.’ He swept an arc with his tail, pointing towards him, Firefly and Lantern.

Firefly nodded.

‘Come on, let’s go,’ he said. Lanternfly was spinning the dagger in his talons, eyeing him and Firefly with something in his narrowed eyes Chestnut couldn’t understand, but it wasn’t positive. Is he jealous.. of us? Of our friendship? Or maybe it was something else, maybe he was thinking that they would betray him, or even.. end up hating him. This dragon certainly hasn’t had a good past, he thought.

‘Alright,’ Lantern and Firefly chorused, and they took off towards the HiveWings in the distance.

Sage

Sage once again lagged at the back of the group. She was beginning to miss her home, even though she knew the mission was more important, she still longed to see the friendly faces of the other RainWings. She didn't think she'd talked much since they left, and was growing lonely. Her gaze wandered to the RainWing healer, Heather, she'd only spoken to her to get help with her aching wings after the last flight, but she wondered if she missed home too. We might never get to see it again. The thought came to her, making a worried green creep into her scales. She at least needed a distraction from her nervous thoughts. So, she flapped forward to fall in beside Heather.
"Hey." Sage put on a small smile. "How long does it take to get to Pantala, you think? I'm not used to all this flying."

Heather

Heather was a little surprised by the RainWing, since she had been in the middle of an argument in her head. Of course, Sage wouldn't have known that. She kept her scales entirely calm, her usual white, pale blue and pastel pink shades.

'I heard it can take up to 5 days for any ordinary dragon speed. If we go quickly, the highest we could make it in is three. We might be able to miss out an island, but that's only if we're being risky, and it depends on whether any one of us needs rest or, if it's night by the time we get there, sleep.'

Robin

Robin nodded. If he was an animus who thought he might've been losing his soul, having somebody around who didn't just fear you for your power would be useful.
I wonder how the other animus became what they are now. I mean, they can't be all bad, can they? If they lost their soul like Sunset might lose hers...he shivered once more at the mere thought of Sunset being anything like that Animus...there must be some way to get it back, or convince them not to keep doing what they're doing, right? The others seemed to be formulating a battle plan, something to cause the animus to falter and even p.erish. But was that the right thing to do? What if the animus had even a microscopic fraction of his soul left. What if they had a similar story to that of Sunset's?

If Sunset had turned out like this Animus, what would I do?

He was sure of the answer. He'd try to talk her out of it and get her back to where she was now.

But can I reason with another animus? One I've never met? And if not, what's the answer then? Do we stick to the original plan? That's kind of heartless isn't it? We'd never go for that plan with Sunset, so why this dragon we've never heard the story of?

He realised; if the animus was back, if he had been the one who did that to Heather...

Are you listening to my thoughts right now? Can you tell me your story?
For the first time he could make out the shape of a dragon in his head. A dragon with ears drooped and facing away from him. He could vaguely hear something, a sound he couldn't put his claw on... Then the dragon glitched out of his mind. He does have a story! Please, if you're still listening...

He knew it was too late. The animus was gone.

Sage nodded, it sounded like a long time, but she wouldn't have expected anything less. She looked up at the sky, a faraway look in her eyes.
"I hope none of the other RainWings worry about me." She said. "I didn't get to tell them where I was going... Or that I was leaving at all." She let out a weak laugh that quickly faded, worry and guilt stirring inside of her, showing pale blue and dark purple on her scales.

Heather

She nodded in understanding.

'I only told my friend Mint, and the messanger, who's now d.ead.. But we'll be able to make this through alive, and then tell them where we've been.' She smiled. Even if it was a rather forced, half-hearted smile, she felt the need to keep false-comforting others. She was only convincing herself at this point. We WILL make it out alive. For Voilet, Dawnbreaker... and everybody else's sake. And we'll be heroes.
It occured to her to wonder what the Animus was even doing on Pantala, and why they weren't d.ead yet if the animus could k.ill so easily like that, without leaving a trace.
I thought I'd plastered this into your skull little RainWing. You're useful to me in other ways.. especially Sunset, an animus to fulfil my duties!

She took Robin's advice and didn't even respond to the animus, despite being tempted to.

Fine. If you're going to ignore me I'll just take you. Rather sooner then later.

'what?!' she asked in confusion, accidentally speaking aloud. She heard a laugh.

Rather wait till you're closer. It could get too obvious if I do it now.

What are you talking about?! she yelped in her mind. She couldn't stop the green creeping into her scales, but she managed to keep it from devouring her body.

You tell anybody and I k.ill them, it hissed. It somehow sounded angrier then usual, which was unsettling her..

Sage returned her smile, trying to make herself believe her words.
"What?" She asked as she heard Heather say something, then saw the green appearing on her scales. "Is it the animus again?"
Sage's worry was making her own scales turn green too.

(OOC It's really late where I am, I better be going now. I'll probably be back on tomorrow)
