Thoughts of Guilt

Chapter 29

Battle and Rescue

Hyrith then said in an attempt to dismay the noticeable smell,  “But it hasn’t been used in years and years.”

I then added, “Yet it still retains the smell?”

Hyrith sighed, “Yeah, but this is the only sure way of getting to the Isles’ hall without being seen; because the hall has no back door as it is built right in the side of the main mountain on the main island.”  Hyrith sat down on the floor and put his legs over the side in the hole, “Just watch yourself when he gets down.”

Hyrith then dropped down.  We heard a… splash.  Hyrith then called up to make sure we keep our weapons above our waste to make sure they would not get wet.  I dropped down next and landed in quite a bit of water.  The drop was only about six feet.  I am a little over five foot, but the water came up practically to my waist.

“Actually I was expecting it to be cold,” I said, surprised.

I then reached up my arms to help the girls get down in the small tunnel.  I helped Annabeth get down first.  Then while I was getting her down, Hyrith helped Meen get down, and then I reached back up to help get Cazi down.  Even though it was only a five foot drop, there was still a possibility of injury from the fall for you would not know if there was something under the water such as a rock.  The girls complained a little at first because of there being so much water, but tried to make light of it though.

After trudging through the water for a few minutes in pitch blackness, Cazi then muffled, “I believe any ‘Great Hall’ for any island needs to have a back door.”

Annabeth the quipped, “You get used to the smell after a while, but it still stinks.  The smell will probably wear off in like… doe… I don’t know, Meen, wouldn’t you say…. a couple of days?”

We all laughed.  Meen replied as I could hear her do some obvious sniffs of the air, “I’d say… about a week.”

The smell was kind of strong and anyone who would just smell the smell would immediately know what it was.

Hyrith then repeated, “I said this tunnel hadn’t been ‘used’ in years.”

Meen then said a comeback, “For some reason that doesn’t make it any better.”

“I know right,” added Annabeth.  “If it smells this bad, it doesn’t matter if this tunnel hasn’t been used it years.  It.  Still.  Stinks.”

We all laughed.  Hyrith had taken the lead.  I was behind him followed by Annabeth, Meen, and Cazi.  We had to be single file as the tunnel was very small and curved.  Well, curved as much as an underground stream tunnel can be as the water would keep cutting through the rock eventually crafting the tunnel after a while.  The water had gotten above our waists slightly the more we pushed on.

Once five minutes had gone by, we found ourselves at our destination as Hyrith held up us hand for us to stop.  I could not tell where we were going, but at the start I knew we were heading north and while we were trudging through the water the tunnel kept slightly turning to the right… in the direction of the hall building.

Hyrith asked for a lift up, so I put out my hands for him to put his foot.  I lifted him up and held his foot in place.  I saw him reach above his head and slowly push up and then back a square piece of wood.  The wood square looked to be have four boards intentionally secured together to fit the intentionally square cut hole in the floor.

After slowly sliding the board back, he peek his head up through the floor.  Once the floor board was pulled back, sounds of talking and seemingly clanging of metal could be heard.  He then motioned me to put him down.  He slowly put his feet back in the water as make as little sound as possible.  With the little bit of light coming from the room above, Hyrith motioned with his finger to be quite and then with a couple more motions told us that there was another guard sitting not three feet in front of the hole eating something at a small desk.  The next couple of motions I got the general idea from Hyrith.  I then motioned behind me to have Meen come up.  Hyrith then stuck his hands out for me to go through the hole.  I too went slowly up out of the water as to make as little noise as possible when the water start dripping off my clothes.  Hyrith lifted me up and I then put both of my hands flat on the floor to push myself up all the way.

Once I stood up in the room, it was actually very loud in the hall.  Do not know why, but we will soon find out.  I then reached down to help Meen up as well.  As soon as she got up, I motioned her to get one of her pans.  When I did that, she nodded as she figured out what we were going to do.  I walked over to the guard and tapped him on the shoulder.

“Alright, Alright,” replied the guard who must have tried to get away to eat a late lunch or early supper.  “I’m coming.  Can’t a guy even have a chance to eat?”

The man got up.  As he did, I picked the right side to get on him as he turned to his left.  I reached on the top of his head to grab his pointed helmet to take it off.  Before he had the chance to say something along the lines of, “What’s happening?” Meen knocked him out with her pan.

We two went back to the hole to help the others up.  I then went back to drag the guard back over by the desk, lift him up, put him in his chair, and lay his head on his desk like he had fallen asleep.

Meen quietly whispered to me, “Why didn’t you just use my pan and do it yourself.”

I replied with a smile, “I know how you love to use your pans, so to knock the guy out with a blunt object was the best option…. Besides you have a better technique then I do.”

Meen smiled as walked past the hole in floor that Hyrith was covering back up.  All five of us, dripping wet from the waist down, headed to the doorway of the room which was about seven feet further back from the hole in the ground.  Hyrith and I edged our way to the doorway.  As we were getting there, we could start to see who was in the corridor.  Hyrith and I just barely edged our way past the doorway to use our left eye to look out.  There was a hallway that led to the left into the main part of the hall.  Straight across from our room was another room.

Hyrith then pulled back a few steps and whispered to all of us, “That should be the room that they are holding Ohmarr’s parents in as that was our brig.  The door is closed, so we will have to create a diversion to open the door and get in there before the others realize what has happened.”

I then reached into my upper right pockets of my tunic as that is where I put those two round balls that Garth gave me.  I gave one a small toss to show the diversion.  I handed one to Hyrith for him to throw back down the corridor in the direction of the entrance.  Then I would throw the other one further into the hall.  Just as a man had walked past the room, Hyrith went to the other side of the doorway and pushed himself up against the wall behind him and the little bit of wall next to the doorway.  I motioned him to squat down and roll our “diversion” our respective ways.  I rolled mine first followed immediately by Hyrith’s ball.

We waited for something to happen.  Several seconds went by before…. POOF!  The hall, most of the corridor, and the rooms near the entrance filled with Zippleback gas.  Garth must have compressed the gas into those round balls; then when once you press the cylinder on top, that causes the gas to release, but not until after a delay giving the person time to throw the ball.

We all rushed across the room and opened the door.

“There’s no one here,” declared Cazi.  “Where is Ohmarr’s parents?”

Meen then said, “I don’t know, but let’s get out of here before we are captured.”

We all agreed and started to rush out of the room.  Hyrith had turned around to look around the room and I nearly knocked him and myself down by running into him.

“Come on, Hyrith,” I urged.  “We got to go!”

He did not budge as he stared at what was in front of him.  Four pedestals in a line side by side with a holder on each pedestal for each respective object’s specific size and shape.  I quickly glanced at each of them.  The pedestal to the far left had a dagger leaning on its holder with the blade resting on the pedestal.  The dagger had fire red and ice blue gem stones or crystals adorning its hilt.  Then on the pedestal to the right of it had a spear like staff with a spear on one tip with an odd looking wooden hook that looked as if it had an eye along with small spikes running up and down the hook part of the spear.  The second pedestal from the right had another dagger.  This dagger looked plainer than the other, yet the blade itself was spotless, very reflective, and did not have a blemish on it.  The pedestal on the far right held a sword which was laying on two holders perpendicular to the pedestal.  I noticed something different about the hilt, but I did not have time to dwell on that.

“Come on, Hyrith!” I commanded as I grabbed Hyrith’s arm and dragged him along.

Hyrith then came out of his daze and started to run slightly faster than I did back through the corridor.  He and I bumped into several vikings on our way out of the hall.  The front doors were already open.  When we exited, we could see Asvord, Elsa, Explod, and Garth had already started their diversion.

“They’re early,” I said as Explod did his signature “Hazor!  Sparko!  Explode!” move in the middle of the village ruins keeping a group of other enemy vikings from making their way to our point.

Then realizing we had surprised our them and the enemy starting to attack, I jumped out of the way of a viking rushing me with his sword.  Hyrith made him trip and I gave him a right cross.  The viking sprawled out on the ground in front of us.

There were no steps to this hall, which was odd to me, so I ran out to help my friends who were already locked in battle.  Annabeth was dueling a taller viking with her both her swords, about thirty yards in front of me.  I was still running out and saw she needed help Annabeth was pushing against his sword with both her swords, but the viking started pushing back and was winning.  While in stride, I got my bow off my shoulder, reached back with my right hand to get an arrow, drew my bow, and shot the viking in the knee.  At the same time I shot my arrow I saw another viking coming up from the right, behind Annabeth who had jumped and was sweeping down with a sword.  I drew another arrow and shot him in the knee while as I just let go of the arrow, tackled Annabeth to get her out of the way of the incoming viking.

She and I rolled a few rough tumbles over each.

“Are you okay?” I asked as we pulled ourselves up.

Annabeth was about to reply when she gasped and cried out, “Look out!”

Annabeth shoved me out of the way as I rolled on the ground at the same time she in a matter of seconds got her bow, grabbed an arrow, and let go hitting an incoming viking in the shoulder.  The viking fell backwards to the ground with the force of the arrow.

“Next time,” Annabeth said as she helped me back up.  “Make sure no one is coming before you ask for thanks because he saved my life,” Annabeth said with a wink.

I then quickly said, “We need to get to our dragons and get out of here.  We can’t take these guys on our own, we need the help of the other two groups.”

Annabeth nodded as she ran, picked up her dueling blades, and ran in the direction of Meen and Garth, who had joined in on the battle.

I ran the opposite direction towards Cazi and Hyrith about twenty yards away.  I put my bow back over my shoulder, as I got out my sword for close combat.  On my way over, I saw Cazi was fighting a guy that had a sword with her dagger.  One might think that would be an unfair fight, but you have not seen Cazi handle a dagger before.  The viking swung thrice at her, she dodged the first two times by moving out of the way and even blocked the third with her dagger.  When the viking came at her fourth time, she baited him into swinging down.  Once he did that, Cazi pivoted on her right foot to move out of the way while at the same time swing down with the hilt of her dagger onto the guys hands and making him drop his weapon.  Catching the guy surprised once she came down with her right hand, she threw a left cross to the guy’s cheek, and then finished him off another left punch to the gut.

I then told Cazi the same thing I told Annabeth.  Cazi ran off in the direction that Annabeth had gone.

I saw Hyrith back near the entrance of the hall in a fist fight with another pointed-helmet viking, about another twenty yards from my position.  Hyrith and pushed him off, but in doing so gave the viking a chance to draw pick up his sword again.  I drew my bow again at the ten yard mark, shot an arrow at the viking’s weapon, and knocking it out of his hands.  When I caught the attention the viking, Hyrith ran up to him, jumped sideways, and did a flying right kick to the guy’s stomach.  Hyrith had fallen down too, but he was the one that got while the viking laid on the ground.

I again told him what I told Annabeth and Cazi, while at the same time putting my bow back over my shoulder.  Hyrith ran off in their direction.  I then heard footsteps running up behind me.  I barely had enough time to turn, lay on the ground, and use my legs to send the man flying over top of me.

          It was Trevor Oswaldson!

He skillfully recovered with a similar move I use by using a somersault roll back to your feet.

He got back up and said, “So we meet again, Jarl.  Come to spoil my plans did we?  Well, I can’t have any of that.  I am not letting you get away again.”  I stayed silent as he went on, “What do you have to say for yourself?”

I thought for a moment, mainly for Trevor to relax for a moment, and then said, “On guard!”

I drew my sword and rushed him.  He clearly was off guard for that moment.  We rushed each other.  I started to swing my sword in my right hand with a sweeping up and over motion.  He did the same.  But when our swords clashed, I swung far enough that I blocked his attack, and did something else he did not expect.  At the exact moment I blocked his attack, I planted my right foot in front of him and initiated a spin move on him.  I knocked Trevor down in the process.

“Not to day, will you capture me,” I yelled back.

I ran forward to go find my dragon so I as well as my friends could escape!

But then out of the corner of my left eye, I saw Annabeth running after something.  I turned around to look, while still running, it is Annabeth running after a group of vikings… carting off Anora!
“Aw, come on, Annabeth,” I replied, still running.  “We don’t have time for this, plus we would probably get captured in the process.”

I continued to run forward to look for my dragon.  I did my Thunderdrum call and heard him coming.  As he flew towards me, he turned to fly to my left and I jumped on him while I still in stride.  I continued to fly towards Annabeth for us to escape our enemy.

“We need to abort the mission and regroup with Hiccup and my other friends,” I told myself.

On the Subject of Hackers

please read this link, it helps to identify the different types of hackers. I have hacked computers, and servers in the past (despite not being the best at code) but I never do it for personal gain. Unfortunately the hackers most people refer to on the internet are crackers so they bring a bad light on the hacking community in general. I only learned to hack code because I needed to in order to hack my microwave and other software in my house.

Don't be a Cracker you ruin it for everyone!
