Snoggletog Countdown Day 25: Dashers Intro

You better watch out. You better not cry.

Better not pout. I’m telling you why.

The Snoggletog Wraith is coming to town.

Hello, everyone! I’m Dasher the Snoggletog Wraith!

I am friends with Whisper the Wolf and her…um…uh…very beautiful Woolly Howl, Winterwind.

Here’s the thing, I REALLY want to ask Winter to spend some Snoggletog time with me, but Whisper won’t let me unless I agree to do this Snoggletog countdown series for the next 24 days. Because, as she says, who knows more about Snoggletog than a Snoggletog Wraith? Here I hope to post Snoggletog tips, dragon activities, songs, and more!

I was going to post this on my own account, but the admins are being super slow in approving it, so I’m hijacking Whisper’s for now.

Whisper: I did not agree to this!

Well, I don’t have an account yet. What would you like me to do?

So while I plan how to get Winterwind alone, I’d start the countdown with a little info about my kind: Snoggletog Wratihs!

Snoggletog Wraiths: We are Woolly Howls. In fact, we are the rarest of the Woolly Howl breed. Like most Howls, we have the same shot limit (6) and speed (about 18) and we are sharpshooters who shoot hail. We also fly in blizzards. But unlike our brown, purple-eyed cousins, we are white with greenish wings, blue eyes, and golden claws and have a slightly stronger firepower and armor. According to your human legends, Snoggletog Wraiths only appear on the eve of Snoggletog, and sighting one guarantees a snowy festive day. That’s probably because of our migrations.

Snoggletog Wraiths are interesting Woolly Howls. Unlike most Woolly Howls, Snoggletog Wraiths are more solitary and live in mating pairs, whereas common Woolly Howls are more pack-like. However, we do get together every year for hatching our young, and it happens to be right around you humans’ Snoggletog time. Every year I would fly ahead of coming snows (which pleasantly provide an updraft for me to ride), and usually I end up flying over Berk, which is why I usually only appear over Berk if there will be snow the next day. And it was on such I migration where I first met Winterwind and Whisper!

We also like to decorate ourselves to attract mates. I’ve dressed up in my finest for Winterwind, and I bet this year, it will work!

Super Cute Snoggletog Wraith by tashiyoukai

Alright, I think that’ll do for now. But do you know how to set up the perfect Snoggletog tree? Or how to dress for Snoggletog? Or what to give your dragon a gift? If not, check out this thread throughout the month!

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,

And the Snoggletog Wraith says it’s so

‘Cause his appearance means,

The snow will coat the greens,

So go play out in the snow.

A Pleasure!

Why, thank you, kind madam! *munches berries delightedly* Winter King. I think I can get used to that title.

Very nice, glad you're making friends and getting an even bigger ego. Now would you get off my account?!

*swallows the last of the berries and exams golden claws absently* Talk to the admins about that.

Ugh! I swear, I submitted a request for his account weeks ago! :/

So who are you, friendly girl? I did not meet you last Snoggletog, yet Whisper seems to know you well.

Dasher, meet Owl and her dragon Shadow. Owl and Shadow, Dasher.

A pleasure, kind mistresses.

Laying it on thick, aren't ya?

She gave me berries.

Winter is Coming

Well as Whisp stated I am Owl. Well fully I'm OwlMoonFire, and I have nicknames as well such as the night's rider, however most just call me Owl. And this is -

I go by many names great Winter King. The great black dragon of legend, the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself, the death bringer ... however many call me Shadow for reasons yet to be discovered

She follows me around and mocks me, like a shadow.

Owl! Please I'm wanting to be in the Winter King's good graces. So shall I tell your queen that you have arrived?

-_- Oh brother. Sorry about her Dasher, she can be a charmer ...

Charge! For the hairbrush!

You can call me Geek or Geekdom for short. I'm a girl, by the way.

Thank you, AllyNadderRider, for my profile picture!

My fandoms include *deep breath* Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, MLP, HTTYD, Marvel, Ranger's Apprentice, and Narnia.

Here are my OCs and adoptables:

First up is Allie, my main OC.

Her dragon is Excelsior, a stormcutter. The picture of her and Excelsior is by Scorpio Kardia, and the one of just her is by Pixel.

Allie's organized and practical, but still really absentminded at times. She's awkward around people she doesn't know very well and when it comes to muscles she's pretty wimpy, but she can whip up a pretty great strategy. If only people would listen to her when she tried to explain it. She really doesn't like hurting other people or animals, and that's not even including the fact that she feels queasy around blood.

Her weapon of choice is a hairbrush. Why? Even I don't know.

Then there's Kara.

Kara was an Outcast, but now she lives in Berk. It's a long story. I might write a fanfic about it... eventually. The razorwhip edit is by NadderMeGood. Drawing of Kara by MistyNight.

Kara is spunky and stubborn. She's tough as nails, and she's suspicious of any kindness. She grew up in a very dog-eat-dog world, after all. Her weapon is a warhammer, and she primarily rides a razorwhip named Shine, though the armorwing from the Battle for the Edge expansion and the singetail from the Return to Dragon Island expansion are also her dragons.

Next up we have Starr.

[No pictures of Starr currently]

I use her for next-gen roleplays. Starr has long, blonde hair and dark green eyes. Her bonenapper, Crypt, is still young and doesn't have a full armour. This picture of him is by TosiLohi.

Starr is shy and quiet. She really loves maps and mapping, and she's good at rock-climbing. Crypt is cocky and stubborn and refuses to listen to a word Starr says. She found him as an egg, which is why I have this awesome picture by Gorginia47:

Finally, there's Lissa.

[No pictures of Lissa currently]

She's another one for next-gen things. She's short and kind of pudgy, with black hair and grey-blue eyes. Her dragon, Santa Claws, is a battered red/white/green groncicle.

Lissa is really good with animals. She's kind and compassionate. Santa escaped from Drago a while ago, but his experience there left him scarred both emotionally and physically. Lissa was able to help him work through his trauma, and the two forged a powerfully unbreakable bond.

Here are my adoptables. On the newer ones (as of 10/17/16) the dragon species name is a link to the adoptable thread. If I get around to digging up some of the older threads I'll link them too, but that may not happen.

These are Ithil, Anor, and Earendil, my Spacial Beauties. They're siblings: moon, sun, and stars.

Ithil is named for the moon in Elvish, from The Lord of the Rings; he's playful and always ready for a romp and a good time. When vikings around him are drinking mead, he likes to take a sip, and he becomes very goofy and then falls asleep, soundly and for a long time.

Anor, on the other hand, is the sun. She is quieter and more reserved. She's very observant and sees a lot of things that go on in Berk. She likes napping in the sunlight, which her scales reflect blindingly. She loves plants and everything that grows, and often tries to help them along, with varying success.

Earendil's namesake is one of the brightest stars of Middle-Earth; she's shy and reserved. She loves to explore and find places where nobody's ever been before. She likes boats, and never gets seasick. Earendil can make the parts of her that look like stars glow brightly, even blinding those who threaten her or her friends. She hates spiders.

Name: Anuniaq

Species: Keelut

Starr was exploring the north with her boneknapper, Crypt, mapping the scattered islands. After she made camp one night, however, she discovered a lot of stores were missing the next day. She found doglike tracks running through the snow, but after she followed them for twenty yards, they disappeared. When she studied the depth and angle of the last tracks compared to the previous ones, though, it looked like it had taken flight, like it was a dragon--but what dragon had prints like a dog?

She sketched the prints in her notebook and set off through the air with Crypt to track the dragon. Though Crypt was not an exceptional tracker, he was able to follow the scent of the stolen food fairly well. They landed near a hollow, where Starr saw a smallish dragon devouring the last of her stolen supplies.

Using the rest of her supplies, she lured the dragon back to Berk. She soon found it had a curious mind and was eager for adventure, much like herself. The two formed a bond as Starr took care of the creature, who seemed to have been fairly hungry up in the north. She named the dragon "Anuniaq", a name that to those of the north she came from meant "Hunts for Food". Another translation was "Hunts for Knowledge", which was also accurate. Starr took Anuniaq with her often on her exploring journeys up north. Not only did the dragon get to visit her homeland again, she was also excellent at navigating the area, and her uncanny ability to locate food meant they could travel lighter, packing fewer supplies.

Allie enjoyed sitting down to fish, getting a chance to just relax. Today, she'd borrowed a boat and was out fishing on the open ocean. Excelsior was circling the area, flying around. Allie had caught a lot of fish and was getting ready to return home when suddenly, many dragons swooped in on her and began attacking. She pulled out her hairbrush (her weapon of choice, don't judge) and swung it, but it passed right through the creatures. She was confused, but the dragons soon disappeared again. Odd.

When she turned around, she suddenly realized her entire day's catch had been stolen! Through the water, she caught a glimpse of a long purple creature sliding away through the water. She called Excelsior to her and followed it. It looked like some kind of dragon. She called Excelsior, mounted, and followed the new dragon.

Before long they caught up to it, sitting on the shore and eating the last of Allie's fish.  It was a beautiful dragon, and Allie walked up to it cautiously, not knowing how it would behave. It fixed her with a stare of its eyes, and somehow she felt it was sizing her up, deciding if she was worthy. She trusted her instincts about this, and also about what he was looking for. She kept her eyes open, not blinking, and stared it in the eyes as she gave it a short bow. It paused for a moment, then lowered its own head, returning the bow. Allie reached up and stroked its nose. The nose felt hard, kind of like a beak. In her mind, Allie began calling the dragon Buckbeak.

It lowered its neck, allowing her to mount, then took her for a ride across the top of the ocean. It was amazingly fast, and the water splashing her was cool and refreshing. Before long, it returned her to the rocky area, where Excelsior was waiting.

She took off, and Buckbeak didn't follow, but she often returned (especially on hot days) to visit him and go for a ride.

(Okay, maybe this dragon reminded me a bit of a hippogriff.)

Adopted from: WitcherForever

Name: Forest Light (Light for short)

Species: Cave Raider (Hatchling)

Lissa and Santa Claws, her groncicle, were out scouting the forest. They were so absorbed in watching the wildlife on the forest floor that they didn't notice the clouds beginning to gather until, with a rumble of thunder, the clouds opened up and poured down on them. Soaked through, Lissa turned back, but soon spotted a cave. She'd much rather stop there until the storm abated than head all the way back to Berk, and Santa seemed eager to reach shelter as well. Raindrops were freezing on his cold skin, weighing him down.

They landed in the cave, and Santa began ridding himself of the raindrops with his claws and teeth. Lissa started heading towards the back of the cave to explore. She thought she saw a faint glow ahead. Interested, she moved closer, then realized it was a dragon, and not just any dragon, a mother with a nest! She knew better than to mess with one of those, but it wasn't a dragon she'd ever seen before, and she was absolutely fascinated. So instead of backing away, she walked forward slowly. The dragon turned and growled at her, and Lissa noticed the glowing spines--fascinating! Hiccup would never forgive her if she let an opportunity like that go to waste. She lifted a hand. "It's okay," she whispered. If you used a high-pitched, fast voice, animals would get riled up, but a low and slow one would calm them, a fact Lissa knew well and would use to her advantage. "It's okay," she said again, forcing herself to be calm, practically exuding calm. Carefully, she reached up and stroked the dragon's nose soothingly.

Lissa wasn't a very talented girl, but this was where the talents she did have lay, in calming and understanding dragons, or any animal, really. She rarely used dragon nip, which felt like cheating to her. But this dragon was fairly calm already.

She grinned and started to walk towards the eggs, but a growl from the mother alerted her that she wasn't trusted that much yet. She backed away from the eggs, which seemed to earn her some more trust from the mother.

She continued to stroke that dragon, running her fingers down the neck, along the back, across the wings, down the tail. The dragon seemed to like that a lot, so Lissa continued for a while. In fact, what she was doing was memorizing the dragon's curves so she could describe it to Hiccup.

She heard the rain outside start to lessen and turned to head back outside, but the mother dragon made a little rumble that clearly meant, wait just one second. Then she turned to the eggs and nosed one towards Lissa, a foresty green one with bluer and yellower patches. The yellow patches glowed. Lissa gasped as she realized what the mother was telling her. Tenderly, she picked it up. "I'll take good care of it," she promised solemnly.

The glowing egg lit Lissa's way back through the tunnel, and she found Santa all ready to go. The rain had stopped now, so she mounted up, still holding the egg carefully, and headed back to Berk to tell Hiccup. He was excited she'd discovered a new species, and when the egg hatched, he sketched it from every angle while Lissa tried desperately to convince the dragon (who she'd named Forest Light) to sit still. He was a curious, adventurous fellow, and he loved riding on Santa when Lissa went anywhere. He was incredibly loyal and never left her side, and though he was extremely reluctant when he first learned to fly, he got the hang of it more quickly than any other dragon Lissa had seen. She took him often to visit his mother, but the visits didn't usually last very long, as the mother dragon had plenty of other babies on her hands.

Light wasn't really Lissa's dragon, not fully. Hiccup had a large hand in his training, too, and he soon showed an affinity for herding both sheep and small dragons, making him invaluable around the village. Lissa liked to joke that once he grew up, he'd keep the entire village full of dragons under control.

Species: Wardenrain

Backstory: Starr was, as usual, exploring. Crypt, her boneknapper, was exhausted, so she was forced to land on the first island that came into view. He collapsed into sleep as soon as they touched the ground, and she knew she wouldn't be able to wake him up, under any circumstances, for several hours.

Unfortunately, he'd landed right next to a lake, and the lake was full of scauldrons. They weren't hungry enough to leave the water, but they were still eyeing Crypt. Starr noticed rainclouds approaching, and realized that if it rained, the water would rise up to Crypt, and the scauldrons would eat him. As the first drops began to fall, she prepared herself to fight the scauldrons, but not with much hope of success.

Suddenly, she heard wingflaps above her. A strange dragon she'd never seen before was flying overhead, basking in the rain, and somehow drawing it to herself so that little of it fell. To show her appriciation, Starr caught the dragon a large pile of fish, which it ate eagerly.  She wasn't able to convince it to return to Berk with her, but whenever she returns to that area, she can always find it, and it's usually eager to play.

Celestia watches over the element of light. As such, she is extremely attracted to shiny things.

Name: Revenge

Species: Ballistic Silentwing

Personality: Revenge is, as her name suggests, very vengeful. But that's not the only side to her nature. She's also very nurturing to younger dragons and more forgiving of them than of others. She enjoys flying and doing tricks, but she's very competitive. I don't let her compete, because she'll make it less fun for others.

Adopted from: chameishida

Name: Baby

Species: Starstruck

Backstory: I was walking by myself in the woods when I heard a keening yelp. I ran towards the noise, which sounded like an injured dragon. I burst into a clearing to see a baby starstruck being attacked by a boar. Knowing how rare they were, I wanted to save it, so I attacked the boar with nothing but a small dagger. Both I and the starstruck got pretty injured, but I managed to drive off the boar. The dragon and I had to work together to get back to Berk all right. By the time we were done, we'd formed a bond. I called her Baby while we were in the woods, just as a nickname, but she refused to answer to anything else later.

Backstory: Seafoam was one of my very first dragons. I passed her beached on the shore, floundering around and trying to return to the water. It took me a long time to convince her to trust me and let me help her get back into the water, but after that she was always swimming around when I came into the water and bringing me fish to thank me. I'm not sure if this is quite a dragon bond or one of those life-debt things, but I love her all the same whichever it might be.

Name: Rowena

Species: Golden Snitch Dragon

Personality: Rowena is quiet, but not because she's shy. She's more... arrogant. She's highly strategic and constantly creams everyone at chess. She considers humans to be beneath her, but will deign to consort with a few she has deemed worthy.

Backstory: I was glancing out the window of my tower when I first saw her fly past. I was instantly in love with the shimmering swirls of silver on her body, the feathers on her elbows, and her elegant, floating wings. I saw the golden ball she was carrying, carved with words in an elaborate script, but before I could make out the words, she was gone.

It took me weeks to find her again. She was perched on top of the tower, where she apparently made her home, and it was quite a challenge to get up there. She flew away whenever I tried to approach her with a broomstick; she seemed to consider it cheating. So I had to climb. When I reached her, she wouldn't let me approach. She simply rolled the ball towards me, and I saw that every inch was covered in riddles, ones much harder than the ones the common room door usually gave me. She seemed to have collected the best ones for a long time, decades, maybe centuries. I examined them all thoroughly, until I could recite them backwards in my sleep, but I had no idea. Defeated, I was forced to retreat.

I spent hours every day in the library, reading every book remotely related to any of the riddles. It was hard work, but I'm stubborn. After three weeks of hard studying, I was ready. I returned to the tower, and when she returned the ball to me, I answered her riddles. She consented to allow me to come close to her and to touch her. She refused to let me ride her, though.

After that, she came down to the common room sometimes. Sometimes she'd curl up in front of the fire or sit next to me and read over me shoulder as I did my homework--that drove me crazy, because she was constantly making disapproving noises when she felt I did something wrong and always made me second-guess myself, but I got great grades on those assignments! Most of the time, though, she played chess with anyone and everyone who was willing to play her. After the first three times she creamed them, most people weren't willing anymore. But like I said, I'm stubborn. I read books about chess technique, learned from my mistakes, watched her technique as I played her time and time again, and one fateful day, I beat her.

She allowed me to ride on her back for the first time.

I'll never forget that day. It was different entirely from broomstick, hippogriff, winged horse, or any other method of flying I've ever tried, and it was better than any of them. The next day, as I climbed up to her tower as usual, I expected another ride, but I was wrong. She would only grant me a ride after I had beaten her at chess, which was a rare occurence no matter what I did. But it was worth being beaten a thousand times over just for one flight.

Adopted from: IisRandom

Extra facts: This is a Harry Potter-universe dragon. Thus, she belongs to my HP OC Zenna instead of any of my HTTYD OCs. Also, Snitch Dragons are usually much smaller, but Rowena is several centuries old. Future Ravenclaws may well find her atop the tower, but beware. Her riddles only get harder as time goes on.

Name: Ozymandias

Species: Galedron

Personality: Ozymandias likes to think he's feirce, and no doubt he was in his younger days. Now, though, he's just a teddy bear. An elderly teddy bear. He hoards shiny things, and he'll do all he can in protection of them, which usually just means sleeping on top of them... very soundly. One time a herd of somethering smokebreaths came through and stole his entire hoard out from under him, and he didn't even twitch.

Adopted from: Ashley40

Name: Romphaia

Species: Frilled Parrotbeak

Adopted from: Cerebellum

Name: Equinox
Species: Dewmist
Adopted from: Cerebellum

Name: Snarl

Species: Skull Screamer

Adopted from: Golden Scarlet

Snarl is not tamed. He actually really hates my OC, Allie.

(before metamorphosis)

(after metamorphosis)
Name: Lena
Species: Outrageous Windshrike
Adopted from: NightmareRebuff

Name: Azmavarim

Species: Cyclonewing

Adopted from: Snowflake12298

Name: Altus

Species: Triple Stryke

(Short) Backstory: Altus saw Excelsior flying around one day and saw that their coloring was very similar. For some reason, he seemed inclined to trust her, so he followed her home. He was slower to trust Allie, but eventually the pair bonded, though Altus still seemed to prefer Excelsior, and took directions from her more readily than those from Allie.

Adopted from: donnala

Name: Orthanc

Species: This creature actually has no official name, but I call it a Flitterwing.

Backstory: I was walking in the woods when I found its egg. I took it back to Berk and raised it. It became very mischevious, and frightened me by turning into a cocoon for two weeks. I had never seen a species like it before. I suggested it be called a Flitterwing, but the Riders were doubtful.

Names: Nivelle and Solace

Species: Pollen Wing

Personality: Pollen wings are all about taking care of plants. This pair lives in an apple tree near the Great Hall and helps all the plants in Berk grow. Though they're siblings, these dragons are polar opposites. Nivelle loves winter, ice, and snow; Solace's favorite season is summer, the time of sun and warmth. 'Nivelle' means 'snow' in Latin; 'Solace' means 'sun'. Even so, the two work well together.

Name: Laurelindorenan

Species: Elemental Jabberjaw

Adopted From: The Ecliptic Eight

Extra: She's a kind of elemental drago. Her element is (obviously) earth.

Name: Umbra

Species: Jabberjaw

Personality: Umbra is a feisty little girl with a nose for trouble. She's also very curious and tries to learn more about everything. By destroying it. Which usually defeats the purpose.

Adopted from: The Ecliptic Eight

Name: Demeter

Species: Maned Stratofier

Personality: Demeter has a natural mothering instinct, but she doesn't have any children. Instead, her instinct is to protect and help everything that comes her way. She, like most of her species, has a deep-seated hatred for skrills.

Adopted from: mechfighter

Name: Lila

Species: Daggermaw Flamestalker

Adopted from: NightmareRebuff

Name: Alinari

Species: Crying Life Stealer

Adopted from: Golden Scarlet

Name: Fangorn

Species: Tree Eater

Adopted from: Murrish

Name: Valinor

Species: Bladed Sand Screecher

Personality: Valinor has a love of decoration.  She practically makes nests, but she does it using the most shiny and colorful things she can find.

Adopted from: Golden Scarlet

Name: Slash

Species: Saber-toothed horntail

Adopted from: Fury of the Night

This is Squee. She's a Pan Puffle, which is not a dragon- I'm not quite sure what it is. Squee is a real prankster. She likes even jumping out and scaring people, but she's adept at more elaborate pranks too. Being able to float around silently helps a lot with that. She can get carried away and hurt someone accidentally, but she would never do it on purpose... unless it was really, really funny. I adopted her from Sky and Ocean.

This is Tiger, a female teenage whale shark. She's a good friend of Mako's. She likes nosing around shipwrecks and looking at all the random stuff inside.

This is Jelly. Don't let her frighten you, she's really very friendly! She does have a bit of a temper, though, and sometimes when I look into her eyes, I seem to feel compelled to do what she wan- What's that, Jelly? You want me to tell them all how wonderful you are? And how amazing, and how... I don't know, that seems a bit excessive... oh, don't make that adorable face, you know I can't resist-

*monotone robot voice* Jelly is wonderful. She is amazing. I have never had a better pet. Jelly is my best friend.

Day 23: The Perfect Snoggletog Tree

Snoggletog Countdown Day 23: The Perfect Snoggletog Tree

Oh, Snoggletog tree, oh, Snoggletog tree,

How lovely are your branches.

Hello! Dasher again, with a little advice on Snoggletog trees!

Whether you have put up your Snoggletog tree already or whether you are waiting for Snoggletog Eve, I’m going to tell you how to do it right and why the way you did it was wrong.

Whisper: Dasher, giving tips does NOT mean insulting everyone!

I’m just being honest, Whisper! What is the point of giving advice if they do not need it?

1. Get a real tree.

Not one of those fake ones.

Whisper: You mean like the fake tree in the middle of Berk?

Whisper: Sure, you can go tell Stoick that.

Real trees smell nice, look best, and are the kindest to the environment. Seriously, if you’re an environmentalist, you would do well not to get a fake tree. So obviously dear Whisper here wants to kill in the environment because she got a fake tree.

Whisper: Dasher! You know I have allergies!

The ice caps are melting because of you, Whisper. And I live there!

2. Put on ornaments.

Humans seem to like little breakable balls for some strange reason…? Don’t use those. You see Whisper’s Terrible Terror Sparrow here?

Yup, she climbs into the tree and...well, those ornaments don't last long. I’ve heard cats do the same thing.,h_391,w_695,dpr_1.0/vbyd4p5ll9snaqmwc18m/cat-in-christmas-tree.jpg

Oh, Snoggletog tree, oh Snoggletog tree,

Your ornaments are history.

This just proves Terrible Terrors and cats are useless.

Whisper: Dasher, if you're going to use my account, don't insult my dragon! And people like cats! But besides, even if they own these pets, people also like those bulbs. It’s tradition!

...Humans are strange ones indeed.

3. Wrap your tree.

Most people choose tinsel, but you can also use ribbon, strings of berries, popcorn or a combination of two of these. You definitely want to string popcorn. All that corn you harvested in your farm? Put it to use!

Whisper: You just want to snitch more popcorn off my tree.

What?! I have never been so insulted! I—

Whisper: You expect me to believe you had nothing to do with the gaps between popcorn on my string? I know Winterwind didn’t do it, and it's too warm in here for Icevein.

…It could have been Sparrow.

Whisper: Oh, Thor, blame the little Terrible Terror! News flash, it didn’t happen until YOU showed up!

4. Put on lights.

Now you have to be really practiced to put candles in your tree. Be very gentle with your candle and make sure they are steady and stable, space them properly, and light your tree only periodically. Do not leave your lit tree unattended. And if you’re going to let your Terrible Terror light candles, do it BEFORE you put the candle on the tree. Or else…

There is also the new lights where the little bulbs hold the flame? These aren’t as much of a fire risk. If you string these up, make sure you get the colored ones!

Whisper: Ignore him. You can get the white ones if you prefer.

If you prefer to lack in fun! Besides, white lights are just candle knockoffs that can't compare. Real candles are the best. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but they have a warm, soft glow that makes you feel safe and loving. It connects to the past and to nature itself in a way the new lights just can't. It's commanding, magical; you won't want to let it out of your sight. The perfect way to warm your heart on a cold winter's night.

Whisper: Says the furry ice dragon. And it's also a huge fire hazard. You don't want to let a candlelit tree out of your sight, not because it's magical, but because it's terrifying. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Well, it is if you're going have Sparrow anywhere near it.

But even though the new lights don’t catch on fire (usually), the electric lights are not completely safe. DO NOT water your live tree when these little lights are plugged in. You will wish you had been struck by a Skrill instead. Just ask Whisper's friend Norbert.

Whisper: *pats Norbert sympathetically* Just use common sense with your lighting, please.

5. Put on the tree topper.

The placing of the topper is usually done with the whole family present. Some people down south put little humans with wings on the top of their tree or a star or ribbon, but most people on Berk use a little Viking, a horned helmet, or a mace. (The ribbon is obviously best, just like the one on my tail!)$_32.JPG?set_id=880000500F

Whisper: Well, that’s egotistical.

Oh, enough of your derision! This is my countdown thread!

Whisper: On my account!

I can't help that!

And that is how you make the perfect Snoggletog tree for your family!

So go ahead and tell me about your Snoggletog tree! If you have other tips, leave them below! And to help decorate your tree, here is a beatufiul (and non-fragile) ornament! It's my dragon class!

Not only green when summer grows,

But in the winter when it snows

Oh, Snoggletog tree, oh, Snoggletog tree,

How lovely are your branches.

Day 22: Secret Odin

Snoggletog Countdown Day 22: Secret Odin

Odin, Wise One, just slip some fish under the tree for me;

Been a real good dragon. Odin, Wise One,

So hurry down the chimney tonight.

Hello everyone! Yes, it's me, Dasher, on my own account! Check out my new signature to learn more about me! (It's not long, I promise.)

Now, on to the countdown! Since I’ve been introduced to Berk, I’ve noticed there are a number of fun games people do around the great holiday. One of those games is called Secret Odin. If you’re like me – you know, a wild dragon – or just oblivious, you probably haven’t heard of this before, but I’ve since learned how it works, and it’s become one of my favorites. Why? Because it spreads the joy of giving that this season brings us!

Winterwind: Aw, Dasher, that’s so sweet!

Whisper: Wow, who knew dragons could blush?

I’m just feeling a little warm around this fire, that’s all. Ice dragon, you know.

Whisper: Sure…

So you know how Odin gives gifts on the eve of Snoggletog? Well, in Secret Odin, you play Odin by giving some else a secret gift! Here’s the steps to set up the game.

1. Make a list of participants.

Write it on a paper or make a digital list. Depends on how you’re communicating.

2. Shuffle the names and randomly pick from them.

You can use a “Secret Santa” generator, a random number generator on a calculator, or you can simply cut up names and put them in a hat. (I recommend a hat like the one below.)

If you have a hat, have each person choose a name. (They must pick again if they pick their own name.) Otherwise, simply pick names in pairs. Or just use the generator.

3. Make sure each person knows who they’re getting gifts for.

And not just who but what their personality is like and what type of things they might enjoy as gifts so everyone has an idea of what to get. But the person they're shopping for cannot know who is shopping for them! That's why it's "secret"!

4. Set the date, price, and method for delivery.

If you don’t have these, then how can everyone know where and when to meet and what to bring? Are you sending them by Terror airmail or handing them over in person, and by what day are they due? How much should you spend maximum or should it be homemade?

5. Purchase a gift.

Use what you know about your person to get the right gift, using the price as a parameter. Making your own gift is allowed and welcomed. Keep gifts appropriate for the person and situation to avoid awkward situations. If you don’t know what to get someone, practical gifts are always a safe bet…like dragon nip! Whatever it is, make sure you put effort into picking and making or finding the right gift. Remember, the point of this is to make people happy!

6. Exchange gifts.

On the correct date, deliver your gift using the correct method and then await your own Secret Odin gift from your Secret Odin!

Odin, Wise One, forgot to mention one little dish: some nip.

I don’t mean on the nose. Odin, Wise One,

So hurry down the chimney tonight.

Personality: Loving, peaceful, brave, generous, materialistic, and prideful. He enjoys fine things, like great feasts and festive clothes and decorations, and he can be quite determined in getting them. Material things have great value to him, and he can be quite snobbish about them. However, he's always ready to give to others, too. Dasher is generally a pacifist but will act in self-defense and fierce defense of anyone he sees as innocent or kind at heart. He's also extremely joyful and jolly and is never mean-spirited, even when he's acting a bit like a snob. He is a gentle but powerful friend...even if he can be a little full of himself. His compassion and his arrogance both know no bounds!

Hobbies: Flying, giving gifts, doing good deeds, dressing up in fine things, and serving himself fine foods! He's quite happy to let the people of Berk pamper him, as well as play with the children and give them rides.

Favorite Color: Red

Favorite Food: Peppermint

Great advice, Dasher! There's just two things:
Step 3 is backwards. The whole point of a Secret Odin is that you don't know who your present is from. That's why the word "secret" is in there. You need to know who you're giving to, but not who you're getting from.

Odin's horse looks much less terrifying than I thought it would, but it only has eight legs. It's supposed to have sixteen. As I said, terrifying, but to each their own I suppose.

Thank You, Friend!

Oh, why thank you so much for bringing that to my attention! It looks like Step 3 contains a typo. I'll rewrite it.

Really? 16 legs? Every human I've met has told me the great horse of the Wise One has only 8 legs. However, I am new at these human gods, so I shall ask around again. 16 legs really does sound terrifying, I'll grant would be very odd-looking indeed.

Hmm. I heard it had 16, but I could be wrong... Wikipedia (that's a place where humans put information) says eight. The problem with wikipedia is that anybody can put whatever they want on it, but it does seem like you might be correct. Any art I can find also shows eight. And, again, sixteen would be terrifying.

Even eight, if in the spider-like configuration I imagined, would be really freaky. As a rule, I try not to trust anything with more than six legs (sorry, thunderpede).

I read one book that claimed it had sixteen, and everything else I'm looking at now says eight. So, again, I think you're right and I'm wrong on this one.

Day 21: Green the Whole Year 'Round

Snoggletog Countdown Day 21: Green the Whole Year 'Round

The holly and the ivy,

When they are both full grown,

Of all the trees that are in the wood,

The holly bears the crown.

Oh, the rising of the sun

And the flying of the dragons,

The playing of the merry horn,

Sweet swinging in the Hall.

Alright, everyone, so earlier in our countdown, we talked about Snoggletog trees. Well, what kind of trees are they? And what about the other green things around the holidays? After all, decorating with evergreen boughs is a time-honored tradition with you humans, and I always admire decorations! And not only are these decorations pretty, but they also smell great! So what plants are they, what do we use them for, and why? I've been asking around the village, and I've compiled a list of answers!

So here you, the plants associated Snoggletog:

Holly: This one is my personal favorite. Legend has it that the king tree of the forest is the Oak, but in winter, the Holly tree, the Oak’s “dark twin,” becomes the king.

The holly is said to ward off witches and ill-fortune and should inspire love and compassion. It is quite common to deck your halls with boughs of this ruler of the forest. It is also generally placed in your Snoggletog wreaths. The berries of the holly are poisonous, though, so do not try them. Also, holly is said to provide protection against lightning, so…use it when faced with a Skrill?

Icebones the Skrill: I knew there was a reason I didn't like holly.

Ivy: The ivy is the female mate to the male holly. It is a vine that grows in low light, using trees for support, and one of the trees it often twines on is holly. The ivy is said to compete with holly to become the ruler of Winter, giving the winter a Queen instead of a King. (Generally Holly wins, according to legend, but not always.) A symbol of growth, renewal, healing, and marriage, the ivy gives life to the forest in winter. This plant is used along with holly to make Snoggletog wreaths, but some places further south only decorate with ivy outside the home and don’t allow it inside. Every part of the ivy plant is poisonous; just don’t eat it.

Winterwind: Why are you wrapping ivy vines around my neck?

No reason. Do you like the holly on mine?

Mistletoe: Mistletoe is a parasitic vine that feeds off the nutrients of the trees it uses for support. It is considered the heart and soul of the oak tree on which it grows. The mistletoe’s history is actually tied to the god Baldr and his mother Frigg. Upon learning of a prophecy that Baldr was to die, Frigg went to every plant and animal to receive their promise not to harm her son, but because mistletoe was so young, she did not think to ask it. Loki took the mistletoe on his arrow and shot and killed the god Baldr with it. Frigg’s tears formed the mistletoe’s white berries.

As a result, mistletoe can now only be used as a plant of peace. Enemies must declare a truce under its boughs, and if a young man or woman stands under it, they must receive a kiss! While said to have healing properties, the berries of this plant are most definitely poisonous, so let’s just stick to kissing. (Hmm…I need to get Winterwind under this…I’ll just hang some on my wing for now…)

Frostclaws (Norbert's Shivertooth): Can I have some?

Are you going to hold it above Whisper and Norbert again?

Frostclaws: ...No.

Frostclaws: Hypocrite.

Fir, Spruce, Pine, and Yew: These evergreen trees symbolize hope, promise of light, life, and renewal. They are usually used for Snoggletog trees, though yews are dying out for this purpose. The boughs of all of any of these trees may appear in wreaths. Yew is also one of the trees thought to be one of the species to which Yggdrasil may belong; Yggdrasil is the Great Tree that holds all the universes together.

Rosemary: Sometimes called “the friendship plant,” rosemary symbolizes faithfulness, devotion, and remembrance and is thought to protect one from evil spirits. It is sometimes used in wreaths, but unlike the others on this list, this plant is edible; in fact, a nice traditional ham or boar’s head roasted with rosemary makes a delectable Snoggletog dinner!

So what evergreen plants are you using for decoration or cooking? Tell me below!

The winter lays her fingers cold

On dark and lonely nights,

But Snoggletog will soon be here

To usher in the light,

And when morning breaks and the bells ring out,

It is such a joyous sound

To hear them echo in the trees

That are green the whole year ‘round.

Green the whole year ‘round,

Green the whole year ‘round,

The holly, yew, and the ivy tree

Are green the whole year ‘round.

Day 20: Snoggletog Gifts...For Dragons

Snoggletog Countdown Day 2O: Snoggletog Gifts...For Dragons

On the first day of Snoggletog, my true love gave to me,

A Snoggletog Wraith just for me.

So you need to get some gifts. Well, what are great gifts for people? I don’t know, I’m a dragon! But what’s a good gift for you dragon? That I can answer.

Food: Food is always a safe bet. Peppermint, cookies, dragon nip, berries, mutton, chicken, chicken eggs, fish, carrots…;path-prefix=pl

Icevein: And an arctic smoothie with arctic gentian, arctic poppy, and pumpkin!

Winterwind: *whispering to Dasher* It’s a Groncicle thing.

Oh, also, yaknog. Dragons are actualy partial to yaknog. It’s alright.

Winterwind: Speak for yourself.

Saddles: Other dragons might like a new saddle! I think the Snoggletog saddles the finest, but the customized novice and wild saddles are quite fine! And what fine spikes the Defender saddles have!

Stonemaw the Gronckle: Get this off me.

Toys: Toys are always fun things to have! We dragons love toys, and there’s nothing better than toys for Snoggletog! Here’s a list of some ideas:

Ball: Great for any game of fetch!

Light Toy: One day I shall catch that little light!

Chew toy: Something wooden is great, but the best is something stuffed, especially if it squeaks!

Bells: Especially when the bell is in a little ball we can roll around. They’re fun to ring and chase! I like to put them on my outfit.

There you go! Some great gift ideas! So, what are you getting your dragon for Snoggletog?

Whisper: Dasher, I'm not telling you what I'm getting you for Snoggletog.

Well, that was not what I was implying at all!

Whisper: Sure...

On the twelfth day of Snoggletog, my true love gave to me,

Twelve Gronckles napping

Eleven Terrors singing

Ten Howls howling

Nine Nadders flying

Eight Skrills a-Skrilling

Seven Scauldrons swimming

Six Nightmares fighting
Five Fireworms
Four Shiverteeth
Three Groncicles
Two Bewilderbeasts
And a Snoggletog Wraith just for me.

This is such a lovely idea! I'll be sure to keep an eye on this page for Panther, I know how much she loves Snoggletog.

Dasher, darling, I know exactly how you feel. The Admins took quite a while to approve my account as well. I know that the poor things are probably very busy with other things, but they do take an awfully long time...

Oh dear, I've forgotton to introduce myself, haven't I? I'm Citrine, Mirage's mother. Perhaps you know my son?  :)

Hello, everyone! Most of you probably wouldn't know who I am, so let me introduce myself. My name is Citrine. I'm Mirage's mother. Maybe some of you know my son? He's the red Changewing that hangs around with the human known as Panther. Anyway, it's nice to meet all of you! I'm sure you're all lovely people  ^_^

Mother!! I have told you to stay off the forums. Is it really neccessary to follow me around like I'm a hatchling?

...Actually, I'd prefer you not answer that -_-

Changewings rule.

Hello, humans. My name is Mirage, and I am a Changewing. Some of you may recognise me as Panther's dragon. Some may not. Still, I am glad to meet you all, I suppose. I do make an effort to be friendly, but I'll admit I can be a little short-temprerd. I apologise in advance if  any of my behaviour seems a little harsh.

Hello, there, Citrine! A Happy Snoggletog to you, good madam! Yes, the admins are awfully busy, it's true. Perhaps they are overtaxed; it would do well if the company gave them a bit more manpower. But they got to my acount eventually, as you can see. All is well! And Whisper was very kind to let me use hers.

Whisper: I didn't LET you do anything.

Eh heh. Moving right's very kind of you to watch this page for your son's rider. I believe I know your son, though admittedly not well. I see he's arrived as well. Hello there, young Mirage! How are you and your rider?

I do feel sorry for the Admins at times. The poor dears could benefit from a little help every now and then, but unfortunately, these things are beyond our control.

Anyway, I'm glad you know Mirage! It's good to see him getting along so well with other dragons. When he was younger, we had a bit of a problem with him biting others. Took him quite a while to grow out of that habit, actually...

Mirage: Mother! I- *sigh*...I'm just going to ignore that you said that... Hello, Dasher! It's good to see you. My rider and I are very well, by the way. Thank you for asking. I trust you've been well?

I've been well, yes, thank you! I have been spreading the Snoggletog cheer with my carols. Whisper has been helping. She loves carols as much as I do.

Norbert (Whisper's best human friend): These two have been driving me insane.

My dear fellow, you obviously need more Snoggletog cheer.

Norbert: No!

Hahaha..There's nothing wrong with a bit of Snoggletog cheer! It's the season for it, after all. And Panther and I are rather fond of carols ourselves.

Admittedly, she has been going a little overboard on decorations this year though. She actually tried to put a wreath around my neck! Silly girl. I'm a dragon, not a Snoggletog tree...

Day 19: Yaknog!

Snoggletog Countdown Day 19: Yaknog!

Yaknog! Yaknog! all over the town,

Our drink, it is white, and our yak hair is brown;

Our bowl, it is made of the white maple tree;

With the yaknoging bowl, we’ll drink to thee.

Hello, you many riders of dragons! A bigger collective today, I see! Wonderful! Well, today we have a special treat for you! We’re going to learn how to make yaknog!

Whisper: Dasher, I know dragons might like it, but humans hate—

And my co-host today is Astrid Hofferson!

Whisper: *nervously* —our lack of yaknog knowledge, yes!

Astrid: Oh, I’m so glad my drink is getting such recognition!

So, Astrid has been kind enough to share the recipe with me, and together, we will share it with you!

Astrid: I should warn you that I don't remember what the last ingredient was, so as of last year, I've just been substituting with kelp.

-Yak Milk

1. Break open the chicken eggs and whisk it with the yak milk until mixed. (The older the milk, the better!)

2. Add the cabbage and kelp and continue to whisk until the mixture thickens.

Astrid: Now you all know my secret! Enjoy making this holiday drink for yourself.

Astrid: Well, I have to go meet up with Hiccup and give him a mug of yaknog! *leaves*

What a nice human!

Whisper: *clears throat* I, uh, figured I’d also include an eggnog recipe…you know, just in case yaknog might not be your thing. This recipe is my's family recipe and constantly manipulated over the generations, so it has a lot of notes, variations, and possible alterations in the instructions, but if you go with recommended amounts, they shouldn’t fail you.

12 eggs (medium or large; can be done with just the yolks)

4 cups of milk (whole milk recommended OR 3 cups of 2% milk and 1 cup condensed milk recommended)

1 1/2 cups of sugar

2 cups of heavy cream (about 500 ml)

1 tsp of nutmeg (or adjust to taste)

Optional: 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Optional: 1/2 tsp of cinnamon

Optional: Dark rum, bourbon, and/or brandy (add to taste or alcoholic strength preference; 1 cup recommended)

1. Place the eggs and sugar into a blender, and blend for about 2 minutes or until the mix thickens up OR put in a bowl and whisk together until mix thickens up.

2. Whisk in milk and cream to the mix. Continue mixing until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add cinnamon if used.

3. Sprinkle in the nutmeg and pour in the vanilla (if used). Mix until well incorporated. Taste and adjust nutmeg if desired.

4. If alcoholic, add desired amount of rum, bourbon, and/or brandy.

5. Chill the mixture. If alcohol was added, age for a week in the refrigerator. If non-alcoholic, consume in a timely fashion, as it doesn’t keep well.

Recommended: When serving, garnish with nutmeg or cinnamon.

Whisper: This recipe serves 6-8 people, so cut as needed. I also found some…um, DRINKABLE yaknog recipes by some of our fellows here on the forum. Check them out below! (The links should open in a new tab.)

Yaknog Recipe by chakuu

Yaknog Recipe by Nessie

Hmm, those do all look yummy, Whisper, but I think I’ll stick to Astrid’s yaknog.

Whisper: Of course you will.

Snoggletog is coming, the yak is in the nog.

Please give a friendly man a Smokebreath from the fog.

If you haven’t got a Smokebreath, a Terrible Terror will do,

If you haven’t got a Terrible Terror, may Odin bless you!

A Note About Carols

Dasher is pretty much a Snoggletog fanboy (though he'd never phrase it that way) so the carols he references in his openings and closings range the gammit from common to obscure, centuries old to not even a decade old, so you might not have heard of all of them. Also, he only knows the Snoggletog version of each song. So I thought, for all the real-world people out there, every now and then I'd post what Christmas songs he has referenced in the last few days. Here are the nine he's done so far (links should open on a new page):

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

(written by John Koot and Haven Gillespie, 1934)

White Christmas

(written by Irving Berlin, 1942)

O Tannenbaum a.k.a. O Christmas Tree

(written by Ernst Anschütz, 1824 - link has both languages)

Santa Baby

(written by Joan Javits and Philip Springer, 1953)

The Holly and the Ivy

(Traditional British Carol)

Green the Whole Year 'Round

(written by David Downes, 2006)

12 Days of Christmas

(Traditional British Carol, music by Frederic Austin in 1909)

Wassail! Wassail!

(Traditional British Carol)

Christmas is a-Comin'

(written by Frank Luther, 1955)

The last song is based off of this much older version:

Christmas is Coming

(Traditional American Carol, usually sung in a round)

Hi! :)

How do you make a link and put text to it? (quick question)

Btw Flurry is on her way here she got caught up in all the Snoggletog charolers. ;)

WhispertheWolf's picture

To make a link, first type your text. Then highlight the test you want to link. Now, if you're writing a post or reply, you will see a little globe with a chain on it next to your "undo" button above the text box. Click on that once you've highlight your text. A box will pop up asking for a URL. Copy and paste the URL of the link you want into the URL line and press OK. Viola! A link!

Now, if you want your link to open in a different window rather than the same one, then do the same thing, but before you press OK, go up to the tabs on the top of the link box. They read "Link Info", "Target", and "Advanced". Click on "Target". This will show you a drop-down menu. Drop the menu and click "New Window (_blank)". Now, if you've already put in your URL, press OK. Your text is now linked, and pressing the link will now open it in a different window rather than travel to it in the same window.

I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything.

lol, I hope Flurry is enjoying all her Snoggletog carols! ;)

Day 18: Do You Want to Build a Snowdragon?

Snoggletog Countdown Day 18: Do You Want to Build a Snowdragon?

Frosty the snowdragon was a jolly, happy soul,

With some carrot teeth and a wooden nose

And two eyes made out of coal.

Everyone loves building snowmen! For Whisper, it’s practically a tradition for her and her mother. Sometimes she’ll even talk Norbert into doing it with them. Astrid likes to stock up on carrots just for the occasion. And Hiccup and Toothless seem to enjoy it, too.

But snowmen are so boring. I have a better idea…snowdragons!

Now you may be asking, what do I mean exactly? Well, here are some ideas.

A snow-Gronckle!

A snow-Nadder!

Um...Whisper, your farm is lacking in snow.

Whisper: I know! I had enought to make a snowman and snowdragons, but now it's all melting away! D=

Whisper loves winter, so the warmth we have been experiencing this year is kind of upsetting to her.

Anyway...a snow-Thunderdrum!

A snow-Snoggletog Wraith!

Whisper: Uh, Dasher? Those are Night Furies.

Ssssshhhhhhhh. Let me enjoy the moment...

Frosty the snowdragon had to hurry on his way

But he waved goodbye sayin’, “Don’t you cry;

I’ll be back again some day.”

Day 17: Dressing For Snoggletog

Snoggletog Countdown Day 17: Dressing For Snoggletog

Don we now our ga.y apparel,

Fa la la la la la la la la la

Troll the ancient Snoggletog carol,

Fa la la la la la la la la

Hello, everyone! Sorry for the late start. We had trouble with pictures, and I needed Whisper and Norbert’s help today. Now I may be an expert at dressing up a dragon up for Snoggletog, but I’ve been looking over a few human costumes lately. Here comes Whisper with her full outfit! Oh, I have a whole bunch of Christmas sweaters lined up!

First we have Whisper!

She is wearing Elf Boots,

Gleeful Bells

a Snoggletog Hat,

and let’s look at that Toothless’ Snoggletog Sweater!

But wait! There’s a sweater for every hero dragon! Please, show them, Whisper.

Stormfly’s Snoggletog Sweater!

Meatlug’s Snoggletog Sweater!

Hookfang’s Snoggletog Sweater!

And Barf & Belch’s Snoggletog Sweater!

But since Whisper owns a Woolly Howl, she prefers to wear the Merry Scarf!

And there’s even another hat you can wear! Whisper, help me out…the Fuzzy Hat of Cheer!

Whisper: This is great Dasher, but I was thinking more…reindeer antlers. I love deer!

Hmm, yes, that would be great! Frostclaws, go tell Norbert to put on antlers before he comes out. We want him and Whisper to match!

Frostclaws (Norbert’s Shivertooth): Will do! *leaves*

*Five minute pause*

Alright, let’s fix these. There we go! Whisper is now wearing the Midnight Garland!

Now the look is complete!

Now, where is—ah! Norbert, right on time!

Whisper: What are you wearing?

Norbert: What? Frostclaws said make reindeer antlers, so I made antlers!

Whisper: …Don’t you think you went a little overboard?

I think it’s brilliant! So here we have Norbert wearing the Festive Scarf

and the Merriest Snoggletog!

So there you have it, some magnificent Snoggletog costumes. How are the rest of you Vikings dressing this Snoggletog? Comment below! Screenshots welcome!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,

A Shivertooth freezing bystanders,

Snoggletog carols being sung by a choir

And folks dressed up like Northerlanders.

I hate him. He's getting his own forum account soon -he's been begging me every since he saw all the other dragons.

And ideas on how to control him? Aren't Woolly Howl's supposed to be good listeners?

It is true, we Woolly Howls are generally good listeners.

Whisper: Yeah right. Winterwind is selectively A.D.D. and YOU only listen when it's something you want to hear!

Oh, I quite disagree!

Whisper: Point is, Woolly Howls are excellent listeners...but only when they want to be.

I am excited for your forum account, Majesty! But my dear fellow, 'tis the holiday season! As great as Coldplay is, it is time for Snoggletog carols! Won't you listen to at least one carol?

Whisper: What makes you think he'll listen to you any more than his rider?

I am a Snoggletog Wraith. Among Woolly Howls, we are practically royalty!

Whisper: Sure. *rolls eyes*

Day 16: Deck the Farms

Snoggletog Countdown Day 16: Deck the Farms

Deck the farms with boughs of holly,

Fa la la la la la la la la la

‘Tis the season to be jolly,

Fa la la la la la la la la

Hello, everyone! So yesterday we learned how to dress up yourself for Snoggletog, but what about your farm? Decorations are best, truly!

Besides snow-dragons, I took a look around at what people were using to decorate their farms, and I found some great ideas!

First we have this beautiful Snoggletog Post! It is complete with an axe and a half-wreath. The half-wreath, as you can see, is made up of various plants we’ve talked about: holly, ivy, mistletoe, and fir. (Yes, I did actually look up close and observe the outlines of each plant. I then matched their leaves and berries with the plants I know.)

Candles are also common decorations around Snoggletog, meant to keep away the darkness and coldness of winter. Here are some beautiful Snoggletog Candles!

And since there is a little snow out – despite this surprisingly warm winter – a bird bath is out of the question, so instead we have this Snow Bath!

We also have a few whirligigs that look festive for the season! Here is the Deadly Snoggle-gig,

the Cheeful Gronckle-gig,

the Zipple-gig,

and the Thunderwhirly.

No Woolly Howls, though. I’m disappointed.

But your decorations don’t have to be nice to look at; they can also be practical! Here is a Festive Pen for your sheep!

And here is a Faux Snow Chateau. It’s basically just a chateau dressed up in fake snow. Whisper has done up hers just this way. As you can see, the wreath on the door, like the half-wreaths on the post, is composed of holly, ivy, mistletoe, and fir.

And of course, no Snoggletog decoration is complete without a Snoggletog Tree! Please be sure to put presents under it for all the children who’ve been good this year!

So how are you decorating your farm? Let me know down below! Screenshots welcome!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Snoggletog

Ev’rywhere you go;

There’s a tree in the village square, one placed on the farms we dare,

The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow.

Truthfully, I still have my farm's Snoggletog decorations up from last year ^_^;  I'm surprised the snow Nadder didn't melt. I liked them too much to take them down. The candles fit in well with everything else, my sheep were still using the festive pen, and I use the Snoggletog tree to climb up onto my farm house XD

Your farm looks amazing, by the way! Very elegant and festive :)

Day 15: Snoggletog Log

Snoggletog Countdown Day 15: Snoggletog Log

See the blazing log before us,

Fa la la la la la la la la

Blow the horn and join the chorus,

Fa la la la la la la la la

Whisper: Dasher, that’s the third time you’ve used that song.

It’s not my fault “Deck the Farms” covers the best range of Snoggletog things!

Now today, as our carol may have tipped you off, we’re talking about the Snoggletog log! Now there are Vikings on the mainland who celebrate Yule instead of Snoggletog, and they call this log the Yule log. So if you’re looking for something to do with all those logs you chopped in the Wilderness, this could be it!

This log is not just any bit of firewood. The Snoggletog log is a great tree that has not been sliced into smaller logs. This long log serves as the central log of the central fire beginning on Snoggletog Eve and is continued to be burned for 12 nights total. As the end of the log gets burnt up, it gets shoved further into the fire to keep on burning. It has to burn all night; if the fire goes out before daybreak, it’s a sign of bad luck!

Whisper: Also, it’s bad luck if a squinting person or a barefoot person enter your home while the Snoggletog log is burning.

…What in the world…?

Whisper: What? It’s tradition!

…That is a messed up tradition.

Whisper: No, it’s not!

Yes, that is definitely messed up.

Whisper: Oh, whatever!

Humans are so strange sometimes…

Anyway…after the 12 nights are up, save what is left over of the log. It is customary to start next year’s Snoggletog log fire with a piece of last year’s log. This last piece is called the Snoggletog brand.

The Snoggletog log is meant to bring light to a world of darkness in the dead of winter. It symbolizes hope and renewal in the coming year and is the central piece in making Snoggletog into the Feast of Lights!

So are you going to have a Snoggletog log this year? Comment below!

But, here by the fire, we defy frost and storm.

Ha, ha we are warm, and with dragons, it’ll grow brighter.

For here, we’re good fellows, and the beechwood and the bellows,

And the cup is at the lip in the pledge of fellowship.

Thank you!

Oh, thank you so much for answering my post-end question!

No fireplace? Oh, what a pity! How do you keep warm? It's my understanding that humans need warmth.

Winterwind: I imagine she has other ways of keeping warm. You know the things that Skrills can power with their lightning? Probably something like that.

Whisper is quite fond of her fireplace, I know, and prone to cleaning it out to use. Although she claims there won't be a Snoggletog log this year because she's traveling.

Well, if you did have a fireplace, I wouldn't worry too much about your father's squint. Human supersitions are silly sometimes.

Whisper: *in the distance* Hey! I heard that!

Me and my gang would love one of those magical logs to keep us warm! :-)

Where do you find one? My poor night terrors and I are left sleeping out in the cold expect for one of my new recruits, Seed Fall. He is a bit of a clutz (hence the fall part) and maybe a little daft. He likes to sleep underground. Strange right? And Berk is too far away to fly because my Night Terror's wings freeze and they fall down to the ground stiff as a board. So maybe you could fly the log to the edge? :-)
