New Idea: Changing Viking Gender!
What if you decided you want to change your Viking's gender? What if you are fed up of being a boy and want to change to a girl viking? Or the other way round? Plus... SoD could charge a few gems i guess.... What do the rest of y'all think?
It's okay, but I highly doubt this is going to be in-game 'cause your character basically presents who you are, it's not like you can just change it imo.
'cause your character basically presents who you are
Says who? My character is whatever I want it to be, and that is usually not me.
Common sense says: Its really your choice. Normally people create an avatar of themselves in online games. It says on the game's description that this is a role-playing game as if you were in the dragon world (doesn't say that specifically, but I broke it down). It's not illegal to create a personal avatar, also it is not forbidden to create your own. So that does not mean you can criticize people who believe, or did so by creating the avatar of who they are.
I don't think they're criticizing people who decide to do that. I think they didn't like the other person pushing that it was SUPPOSE to be that way.
Nobody is critizing anyone here.
What I meant was gender in this game is like the key what you're going to be called like "s/he, her/him." :)
So? How is that more important than more gameplay choices? If you are really that sensitive just pick whichever gender you like to be called as.
Did you notice that I agreed but not completely? I have played mmorpgs that players usually pick another gender because of "skill settings" and that's the reason, what we have here is whatever gender you have, you will still get the same benefits as the other, so I don't think it would get implemented right away because we have so much things to get fixed and to get updated.
"So? How is that more important than more gameplay choices? If you are really that sensitive just pick whichever gender you like to be called as."
Clearly someone doesn't realise how bad trans people have got it. Also, changing you gender in game is really not that hard for programmers like DreamWorks. In fact, it's so easy it's laughable. When you select your character's gender back at the beginning, and you tap on either the male or female icon, it loads up the character models, and the girl/boy equivalent of their respective hairstyles. Adding the option to change your character's gender mid-game is as easy as that; loading up the Male/female equivalents and converting the clothes pieces to their Male/female equivalent. DreamWorks are perfectly capable of it; they just choose not to. It's no more complicated than the character editor back at the beginning.
Note that in HTTYD 2 & 3, DreamWorks hinted that Gobber was censored.
This is why I never married. This and one other reason." Gobber to Hiccup, HTTYD 2, Valka and Stoick reunion scene.
"Don't listen to him. It's not your fault you have the body of a Norse god. I, myself have the same problem.*Gobber flexes his muscles*" - Gobber to Eret, HTTYD 3, Snotlout is jealous of Eret scene.
The only explanation that fits both why Gobber would say this statements is that he was hinting that he was censored.
So, given what I have said, it wouldn't be too much to ask that SoD developers just give their LGBTQ customers a hand. Sure, it may be controversial, but it may be good for their T and Q customers just to help themselves feel more like themselves. After all, you'll never know how bad it can be, because you're not T Q, or so I will assume.
In my opinion, there shouldn't be genders, just styles, like in pokemon go
I hate stereotypically manly clothing, I want my viking to wear skirts and crop tops and makeup!
I literally hate skirts irl so I hate the majority of the female clothes haha
Just... no. This would open the gateway for so many problems. And changing gender? I think I would stop playing.
It's would have been an OK idea a while ago, but it wouldn't work now.
Why though? It literally wouldn't affect you.
You would stop playing if people were allowed to change their character's gender in a GAME? Most people probably won't even be using it the way you're assuming. They might just switch out one OC for another on their main profile what with the fact that you can change your name and all. It would be easy for people to go "Oh. I would like to play as another OC but don't want to rebuy a bunch of my dragons on another profile. Oh I can change the name and gender and there we go. My other character is now my main viking." That's probably what most people will use it for. But even if people WERE mostly using it for what you're assuming why does it matter? One doesn't get such ideas from a game it would have been in their head already. Plus I doubt you'll be able to see people changing their gender so you don't have to have any contact with it unless you yourself decided to do it which I take it you won't. No one's going to force YOU to do it.
It seems you have missunderstood me. Looking back at my post, I was too vauge. What I ment was, this option would create controversy. I don't want to play a game where there is controversy. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Although I don't support being able to change genders, I still respect people who do.
There's always controversy. It's unavoidable.
I know. It's just...I want as little as possible. Oh what have I done?
It's alright. Everyone slips up on what they're trying to say sometimes.
Someone changing their viking's gender still literally wouldn't affect you.
Hmm, I don't really like that idea. Why would you want to change your viking's gender?
I would like in game that you can make your own clothes and hairstyle (for gems), because now everyone looks almost the same...
Maybe because you are tired of your character? Maybe you don't want to play with a boy anymore and want a girl or viceversa?
In the near future I plan on buying a new viking slot specifically for this reason - so I have a male viking to play with when recording. But I would never consider changing a vikings gender - clothes, hair style, etc, yes. If you want a viking with another gender just pay the gems for a new viking entirely.
Or, you could just pay the same amount of gems to change your gender and not lose your progress.
I don't think you should change your Viking gender. This reminds me of a problem we have today about the people who thinks they can change their gender by just wanting to be a boy or a girl (by mind) when to really change your gender, you completely have to reconstruct your body which doing so can kill you (ever heard this?: "Did you just assume my gender?"). It will just lead to a disaster.
The last thing I want is SoD (and the forums) becoming a Tumblr.
Too late for that, this fandom is filled to the brim with tumblr users.
What I'm talking about is people being offended over the smallest things that shouldn't be a problem. The "Gender thing" is one of them by the "Assuming the genders" just because you looked at the body and saying its a boy or a girl (How else do we know about the genders)? And thinking that there is more then one gender? No.
I didn't say that "the last think I want is Tumblr users here". Its a metaphor, ever heard of that? SoD and the forums won't literally become Tumblr.
...Well, I see here that people are proving me wrong by every means (usually, I cannot find the right words to show what I'm thinking. I make mistakes and I get mixed up with words). I take that as a sign that this thread is better off without me. See yah, got knock yourselves out. Its a free country (my country is).
Thank you! I agree with you 100% on this, Megabolt!
But it's a fake character in a fake universe. Would it really hurt anyone?
Not all trans people get themselves altered surgically though jsyk ww
I don't see how a player character's gender can make this game become like tumblr. It's a harmless change of player model, that's all.
I don't get why everyone's upset about this. It's just a game.
It'd be great for the LBGT community and some players too.
I'm not sorry
"why would anyone change?"
bc there are people who identify as genderfluid and non-binary and someone could also discover that they feel more comfortable as the opposite gender?
That aside, I think there should be no gender bc the clothing for both genders is so gender stereotypical yikes
I sound like a tumblrina but yolo
I actually suggested this a while back, mostly for people who may have had a bugged viking or picked the wrong gender for some reason and don't want to start over entirely. There might as well be people who identified as a gender years ago, but no longer do now, but they'd still like to their character to be relevant. ...Or maybe someone just wants a lil' change of PC in the game. I think that there's a bunch of people who'd be willing to pay for a gender-change token. There's tons of MMOs that offer the same service.
Just start over. You can redo quests, get two free dragons when you start! I was going to buy another Viking just so I can redo the quests lol I get bored very fast. So why not just do that? Start over? A lot of people have. My friend did lol
Well... Would it really change that much? I mean, your viking`s gender really doesnt count for much... What I mean by that is, you dont get different things by being one gender or another. The NPCs use your viking`s name, not pronouns, when they address you. Correct me if I`m wrong though, but last I checked the apparel isnt really gender-specific... As in girls could wear 'boy' clothes and vice-versa. I dont go clothes shopping for my viking much at all, so I may be wrong... I`m not trying to offend anyone, I`m just saying that to me, changing genders seems somewhat pointless since it doesnt really do anything significant...
I think OP's idea is great. granted you could buy another viking but not everyone wants to really start over from the begining. Heck I did that because I had nothing else to do in the game and man I forgot how long the tutorial stuff was.
On the other hand, it's great to know which people to avoid now because of this forum.
Well, they could make it so both genders could wear the other gender's clothes and hair. Ex: A female viking could wear male clothes and hair and a male viking could wear female clothes and hair. That way you wouldn't be changing your gender, techincally, but you could wear what clothes you wanted regardless of gender. Because honestly, your gender in the game makes no difference other than what clothes you wear.
Though I would support the idea of changing genders if my idea doesn't work. Because seriously, why would you care so much if someone changed the "gender" of a group of pixels on a computer screen? It's a game, people.
I like having short hair and in game, my character is female, so if I could put on "boy" clothes, I could totally rock the game! Great idea!

The only reason I can think that this wouldn't work would be if the actual programming of the game to switch out one type of all the outfits you have to the ones of the other gender might be a bit complicated for a game like this. Of course this doesn't mean it's a bad idea or that I'm against it (my other posts should show that I'm not). I just thought of this and wonder how easy or h.ard it would be to program. I have never programmed anything in my life so that might be why I am wondering.
It shouldn't be a problem, programming-wise. Kinda like how in most MMOs, gear is the same but it displays slightly differently on different genders: it's still the same stuff, but a different mesh depending on what model you stick it on. You got female and male meshes for gear.
Interesting.
Sorry, sjatiddly, but I don't support your suggestion. Well, first, there really isn't a reason. There's nothin' really different between the genders in this game, just the same clothes with different styles. The only thing it would do is create more glitches in the game, and with all the complaints already, I wouldn't look foward to that. I mean, they offer long hair styles for boys and short hair styles for girls. So whoever would like to change gender, they could just pretend and make them self look like the oppsoite gender as much as possible.
I mean, if people are perfectly fine pretending that a Sand Wraith is a Night Fury (I don't support this, either) when they are two completely different species, then why wouldn't they be fine pretending they're a different gender? I really don't understand why people want to change their gender in this game. Whether your avatar is supposed to be your or not, it just doesn't seem right (sorry).
This is just my opinion, just like everybody else's was theirs. So please don't get mad at me for having my OWN opinion. As much as I don't like this suggestion, though, you came up with a pretty unique idea, it's just not everyone really likes it/disagrees with it. What I'm trying to say is, you put a lot of thought into it! ;D
I really hope this doesn't offend anyone. :(
Yeaaahhh....
...No.
By the way, that's my oc as a boy.
It be a waste of pixels, lol. I mean, changing your gender in a game doesn't hurt anyone, or yourself, but really, it be a waste of pixels :3
...
I have no idea why so many people here are offended by this idea. If you don't want to change your gender in the game, then if it became an option just don't do it. There's no controversy in the option, plenty of games add the option of having a one time free change to names and such, this is no different. Some people picked the wrong gender at creation, some people got a glitch, some people changed their gender since creating their vikings and they don't feel comfortable playing as the wrong gender. Just because you don't understand why people want to change it or you wouldn't have a use for this idea doesn't mean it shouldn't be added; you're all being very sensitive about something that has 0 impact on you but a positive impact on those who want it.
I see this is an old topic, hopefully some of your opinions have changed at this point, but since someone else revived it I still think it's a good idea and would take little effort to add in.
This comment actually offended me. Don't think just because your behind a screen your actions won't upset people and get a punishment. (Don't argue back at me, not in the mood) thanks to little miss self confident!
