Let's Talk: Mental Illness
This is a broad topic. I have a hunch that anxiety and depression would be a good place to start.
I have social anxiety, if that counts for anything.
Me too.
A chronic mental health condition in which social interactions cause irrational anxiety.
I can't believe I'm gonna post on one of your threads for once but here we go
I might have Anxiety and Mild Depression, however I haven't been diagnosed for them and I can't fully trust self-diagnosing so I'm not 100% sure.
Possibly the same reason I didn't get a proffesional diagnosis until last month my parents were afraid it would affect job prospects and social standing/image (not that I have much of one anyway).
I suffered for years with depression, but got over it eventually. It still comes back though for brief periods from time to time, but over time even that's beginning to fade. I also have been psychologically diagnosed with extreme anxiety, but usually it's either triggered by the extreme social on the negative end or school stuff. I usually have a majory panic attack followed by an emotional overload, and sensitivity period.
But with that said, I find a lot of people hide behind the label "mental illness" use it as an excuse not to do anything about to get out of it (it IS possible). Despite having such an illness, you can only get better if you allow yourself time to heal, some hobbies and surround yourself with positives whether that be people or things you like to do. If you're hiding behind the label, you should probably stop. This is different than a physical illness.
A mental illness is a physical condition within the brain. I am getting so sick and tired of people claiming that mental illnesses can be healed by surrounding hemselves with nice people, draw kittens, fold paper stars, drink AN ENTIRE BARREL OF WATER and buy Lush products or somestuff. It's infuriating.
Old man: Take this healing crystal! It only costs 1000 dollars!
Sick guy: how do I use it...?
Old man: don't worry, I'll walk you through it.
First, give me the money.
Sick guy: okay.
Old man: let the healing process begin!
-sta.bs the guy with the crystal-
Sick guy: -dies-
Old man: I have cure you of your sickness!
....and life...!
Oh god help no! The worst thing of all is that these new-age wooshy wavy hippy homeopaths spread awful rumours about actual, legitimate medication. Way to disregard science and stuff but whatever. My mum's totally into the crystal stuff, hahaha.
She used to try and heal me with rose quartz. I am still not allowed to touch the thing she used on me over 10 years ago because "it still contains the bad energy." :/
Is your mom a hippy?
Yes. Healing stones, superfoods, weird tastes and all.
She was in her twenties in the 70s. I blame the era.
Go poke the crystal >:]
I was tossing it around one time and she wrecked me ):
Did you make sure to point out that you didn't get any bad energy from the crystal?
I think you need to sit down with your mother and give her the science talk.
Haha, won't work mang. She's one of them older folks.
Though it was funny to see her with all her magic things. I must admit that I was a complete enabler though because I kept giving her the things... Mainly because she needed a hobby.
I moved out recently anyway. No more healing stones for me.
Healing crystals are all well and good up to a certain point. I'm totally into the herbs and crystals stuff but I'm not foolish enough to think they can replace real medicine.
Feeling a little down? Go ahead and stuff a crystal in your pocket if it makes you feel better. Caught a nasty case of the flu? Got to the censored doctor, you fool. It seems like common sense, but some people are just really dense.
Any database of crystal info that's worth anything will straight up tell people that trying to use crystals or whatever for healing that they're no substitute for actual medical attention. Anyone that thinks otherwise needs a good swat of reality.
Herbs are great. They indeed don't replace medicine, but some herbs and (and spicesss) are good for small things, like colds, or muscle aching.
People never tend to read disclaimers. I wonder why?
+ a billion hugs to you
Here's a good comic to give folks an idea of the reality of depression. It's insightful to both those who suffer from depression and those around them. I recommend everyone read it
Aye. People need to stop treating mental stuff as if it's not on the same tier as physical stuff.
Here is also a good set of comics about how people treat both types of illnesses completely different.
Dear arceus that is so true (,°-°,)
I'll read it when I get the chance. I only posted on here because I battled depression for years (and still do time to time). Depression is a serious thing, but if we believe it to be a thing it isn't, we will never cure it. We will never overcome it.
And i'm getting sick and tired of people getting upset at me for saying the truth. You don't agree, that's fine. If it were a physicaly condition within the brain I could very well ask for a xray and see a little shadow floating around, or go to the doctors and ask whether or not i've caught a cold. It isn't. It's a battle within your mind that YOU need to win. Some people allow it to take over, and others such as myself, battle with it for years before finally conquering. Others suffer with it for years. It's a battle that's individualized. It's a battle we all one day must conquer before it destroys us. THIS is the reality of it.
Depending on the type of depression, no, your brain is an organ, and sometimes things are wired in the way they are not supposed to be. This is literally a physical thing. Often there is no reason for depression to occur, mentally. I am not saying that depression doesn't have mental reasons, because it does. It's just not always the case.
It's not a 'battle with yourself' that you will 'magically cure' after you have 'won'.
Stop spouting this nonsense, please.
If you want though, I can link you some documentation on this.
Nonesense? Seriously? Thanks for calling my own battle and personal experiences nonesense.
Welcome.
Nope, you're saying the "truth" of your own experience. It's really quite arrogant to treat everyone's depression as though it responds like your own did. Just as you're saying here, it is very individual. For a lot of people there truly is a chemical imbalance, some people even discover that they have a kind of epilepsy causing the depression. Will you tell people to just get over epilepsy? There is evidence that brain damage such as occurs in minor strokes can cause a lot of personality changes, including depression. Will you tell people to get over their strokes?
The mind and brain is so very complex and you're boiling this down to just getting over it because that's what you did. I find that quite offensive considering my maternal family has a history of depression that has presented itself in at least three generations and one family member even committed suicide.
You can believe what you like, sure, but please be mindful of others with your tone and what you're saying. It's a sensitive subject and you're being rather flippant about something that is an extremely difficult matter for some, even if it isn't for you.
Now that is the kind of response I wish everyone who believes in the stigma of mental illness would hear. Chemical composition of the "brain soup", as I like to call it, is a biological function of the individual body: there's something we've defined as standard, or neurotypical, and there's outliers. This isn't inherently bad, just an indication that human beings are very different organisms when related to each other.
Now what becomes troubling is the composition of that soup: a body may produce much less serotonin than the person standing right next to them, like in my case (described by my psychiatrist). The result is my normal emotional state is slightly below that of the neurotypical individual. Is this bad? No, it's how I am. If this leads me into self-destructive behaviors then there's a problem that could possibly be dealt with. But as far as I know there isn't a way to make my body naturally produce more serotonin, at least permanently, meaning there's no "curing" my minor depression. Then you add in other chemical imbalances that lead to stuff like ADHD and social anxieties, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
I'm very sorry to hear about your family member, by the way. It's never easy to lose someone close, I know that for a fact.
^this
health care needs to cover it more often then it dose
I think Medicare changed so that it does cover mental health issues
Just because I'm talking on this thread doesn't mean that I agree with your lets talk threads, they are in an inappropriate place
same most these belong in political forums, not really a forum about flying dragons in circles
but thats only one healthcare company and humans are such complex creatures socially so MIs might be worse then most injuries depending on the MI in question
I mainly have OCD which everyone acts like a joke but really isn't. It angers me when people use it when they don't. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder makes me pull out my hair. Yes, strand by strand. Usually it's an imperfect one. It acts up when I'm stressed or bored. I also had mild depression for a while and I still have anxiety issues.
Mental ilness: Should be considered 'on par' with physical illness, but it should not be romanticised like how Tumblr treats mental issues.
For me, just clinical depression. It's a side-effect to a physical thing I have. It also causes a bad short term memory and a few sensory problems, haha.
Used to have a huge case of OCD as a kid, but it no longer affects me nowadays.
"Shrek looked me in the eyes " I luv u" he said "but I can never love you back! I have Ebola!" Shrek breath smiled like onions "I can cure you." I gasped as he kissed me on the lips "oh shrek!" I smiled, slowly bleeding "praise the onion lord!" I cried, as my Ebola became worse. "
Ever been on Tumblr? It's ridiculous... They self-diagnose their so-called illnesses, which is already a terrible thing to do; they then list their illnesses on their blog pages as if they're accessories.
Worst of all: They actually pretend they have mental problems. They /pretend/ to have stuff like Multiple Personality Disorder.
No wonder nobody takes mental issues seriously!
I heard that free bleeding was a ruse made up by some dudes as a joke and radfems took it seriously, thinking that it's a fantastic initiative- lmao
Ugh, self diagnosis is the worst :C
I haven't been on tumblr ever since I figured out that it has no filters.
There's no filters, but you can blacklist certain tags.
Though, whether people tag their stuff or not is up to them. I tend to unfollow people who don't tag their questionable content. I have blocked out stuff like NSFW on my laptop so I won't be seeing the bobbins at work.
My OCD hasn't been "professionally diagnosed" but I guess you could count my mum she's a pharmicist. I'm pretty sure I have OCD though from what I've heard.
I think pulling out your hair at an alarming rate isn't just a bad habit.....
As for anxiety, I get nervous from the slightest things and when I do (I have eczema) I scratch and scratch at my skin. I don't even feel the pain. My parents have to stop me before it gets too worse. I get panic attacks often break mentally from all the pressure.
i think self diagnosis is ok because some people can't afford to go to doctors or their parents are pretty sure that that is the mental issue you have. But some people take it so far like I see so many posts on Pinterst that just make me URGHHH!!!! Like for example there's a post saying pictures that will bug OCD people and it's got all the little imperfections. PEOPLE DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS IS A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE AND YOU ARE TREATING IT LIKE A JOKE. THIS PROBLEM RUINS LIVES. IT IS AS SERIOUS AS DEPRESSION. GET OVER YOURSELVES.
sorry rage over
They annoy me sooooo much though. And some of the annoying class mates make jokes about it like once a girl cringed dramatically at something not folded properly and was like "Ohhhhh my OCD " cringe cringe
I shot her an irritated look.
Why don't people realise the seriousness. I wish I could make an hour rage speech and show it to everysingle person on earth. -_-
If it makes you feel better, I'm willing to hear you rage.
OCD is one of the few things one can 'diagnose' themselves. It's just so obviously 'there'.
Many other things should not be self-diagnosed- like depression, psycho- and sociopathy... Physical illnesses, definitely, haha. The thing is, self-diagnosis can be seriously harmful to a person. You can't be sure that you're correct. If I type in my symptoms in WebMD for example, it'll keep telling me that I'm either terminal, or just messed up entirely.
Ugh yeah it bothers me so much when people go all "muh OCD" about pretty much everything. I had (read: HAD) a friend like that. She bothered me endlessly with her so-called OCD and her aversion against mismatching patterns.
Real OCD is awful. I am glad that mine has gotten much, MUCH less worse over time. OCD is not being upset by patterns or things not being 'good enough'. It's about crippling intrusive thoughts that occur all day every day.
Self-diagnosis can be helpful for some people, but only insofar as it being an early step that eventually leads to a professional diagnosis, in my opinion. If it helps someone understand their condition better let 'em self-diagnose as a way to start researching and learning about their potential disorder to they can eventually know for sure and start taking the proper steps to help them cope.
But the people that throw it in everyone's faces all over Tumblr and use it a some kind of get out of jail free card are most likely trying to fit in or attempting to troll people. This is very much a huge side effect of the romantisization Tumblr creates. People think these conditions will make them a special snowflake and they'll get to be part of some crowd they have no right to be included in and that they can begin to act out with no repercussions. It's incredibly frustrating and only hurts actually mentally ill individuals in the long run.
And the 'free bleed' thing was definitely a troll movement. I'm pretty sure it started on 4chan as another attempt in a long line of nonsense they throw around to try and discredit feminism.
Erm, can someone tell me what this whole "free bleed" thing is...?
The "free bleed movement" was a bunch of troll accounts set up on Twitter by 4chan users who posted photos of women bleeding during their menstrual cycle with captions shouting about how sanitary products are oppressive and a result of the evil patriarchy trying to shame women.
It was all a pretty transparent attempt to make feminists and feminism look bad, as they regularly try to do.
What is social anxiety?
