Let's talk about anime shall we?
I just don't like having to read when I'm watching something: it's the reason I picked watching TV over reading a book, the visual spectacle. I remember I used to always turn the closed captions on every time I watched something, English included, but for the life of me I can't figure out why: they're distracting to me now. I'm okay with it being a convention, an alien language that no one would understand without subtitles for instance, but when it's your entire viewing experience it just drives me up the wall. I'll deal with it if I don't have an option, like the case for Dog Days, but I first saw Geass and Lagann in English through a friend who had the DVD series.
I did actually end up finding that Gurren Lagann is subbed on Netflix, but the episode I did watch I preferred dubbed version; I just got used to the English voices, I guess. Same thing happened when I tried watching Code Lyoko subbed: Odd and Jeremie's French voices made my ears hurt...I don't doubt they're good, but they're not what my ears are accustomed to.
Ahh, I understand! I'm used to reading what I'm watching. It's part of being non-English for me :þ Then again, I'm so used to subs that I barely notice them anymore. I don't have to read, they're just there in my peripheral vision and I can read them without actually... reading them? if that makes sense.
I sometimes get a 'go away subs you are distracting me' mindset, but I realised that it's just my unconscious trying to pick out something that could annoy me, LOL.
Hahaha, code Lyoko. Steer clear from anything French or German, because .... bluueerk. Terrible voice acting, most of the time!
Original languages have their charm. I never really find that stuff that gets dubbed matches the source material. I liked DB in English because it fixed Goku's atrocious adult voice, but that's where it ends. Lip synching, jokes that have to be forcibly translated to something entirely different to make sense, it's all not my thing. Then again, I've been watching animus for so long that I gathered enough knowledge of the Japanese language to listen to anime while I draw ._. But yeah, I understand where you're coming from. If you have to pay attention to the subs all the time it kind of beats the idea of watching, I suppose!
Likewise I understand the idea of wanting to be pure to the art form and/or not wanting things to be changed or lost. I realize that Jiji's ad-libbed lines fron Kiki's Delivery Service are a point of contention amongst Ghibli fans. Problem is, I grew up with the Phil Hartman version, and therefore the ad-libs were a part of the story for me. I realize some people would prefer it in the original language, where Jiji doesn't speak quite so much, but the version I had is the version I love, and that's that, can't change my past. It's why I try not to say that one form is better than the other: I say "I prefer this form because ___" and try to allow someone else to have their own opinion on the matter.
As for new material, I do what's more comfortable for me, because that's how I like my entertainment. I won't scoff at subs, but usually dubs are what I prefer...unless I learn that it's been dramatically changed from the original. I doubt I'd have liked Warriors of the Wind nearly as much as I loved Nausicaä (and yes, this is the dubbed version with Patrick Stewart as Yupa. Love that man's voice). I think part of the issue is that language and I just don't get along: I struggle often enough with English (or 'Murican, depending on who you talk to), and other languages just do not come easy to me, hence my preference for actually being able to understand what I'm watching.
I guess it really depends on the dub's quality. Some shows just have awful dubs, whereas some of them actually have dubs that are well thought-out with VA's that match the originals in some way. Like, Dragon Ball == Good, One Piece == BAD BAD BAD BAD.
I've never actually seen the English Ghibli's. I bought Howl's Moving Castle only to realise that the default language was set to Flemish, and the second default was English. Both were equally atrocious, and I was happy to see that Japanese was also available. The other versions gave me a bad taste in my mouth. It just... didn't work.. didn't click. Made everything super uncanny.
Yeah if you don't really have a knack for languages it might be annoying to watch stuff in different languages. I personally don't really have this. (I'm pretty decent with languages, but I never take the time to learn them, oops) but I undrstand that if you have to focus on the subtitles all the time, watching a show or a movie is no fun at all.
Hahaha I grew up with dubs so much that I don't even know the lyrics to English Disney songs... I just know the Dutch ones!
o hey
tbh my favorite animes are ginga nagareboshi gin, ginga densetsu weed, another, black butler, attack on titan and tokyo ghoul
i used to be obsessed with hetalia but the fandom ruined it for me
edit: i forgot to mention it but atm i'm watching fma brotherhood and madoka magica. i'm not done with them yet but they're really good and are gonna end up in my favorites for sure
next anime i'm gonna watch is either one punch man or osomatsu-san, and maybe death note later. but do you guys have any other suggestions? i like gorey stuff. (tried fairy tail, didn't like it. tried naruto, didn't like it. and i refuse to watch a single episode of sword art online)
Gorey stuff? PARASYYYTTEEEEE!!! (And Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress like I mentioned above.) Both are like gorey but Kabaneri is really quick paced. Try watching and see how you like them. ≧◇≦
Definitely watch One Punch Man. It's fun! That other show, Mob Psycho 100 is from the same author as One, and it's also worth a watch if you're into the whole "OP protagonist who is too strong and never loses" kind of stuff.
Death Note is kind of bad. If you like reading manga I'd advise you to read the manga. It's much better than the show.
I'm not into gore personally, unless something actually makes sense and isn't meant to be a shock thing. (I can't care for those at all). The only thing I can think of is Hunter x Hunter (2011), which has some pretty gruesome parts. It's one of my favourite anime though. It appears to be your default shounen anime until you realise that-- it is also a seinen anime. It starts off real cute with likeable characters, but it turns an 180 into "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING STOP DYING"-ville pretty quickly. I'd say that it's worth checking out for the superb animation quality alone.

surprised I didn't see this thread until now.
It's hard to choose a fav anime. Most are amazing as heck! Don't make me choose lol.
Put that aside, I agree that L is amazing
I couldn't help but put that there
I was about to break my laptop when L died. After Death Note, Dogetato finally understood why I was squatting on a chair insteqd of sitting on it. XD
Me after Watching Tokyo Ghoul
Me: *drinks coffee*
Me: Kaneki...*starts crying*
Me: *reads a book*
Me: Kaneki...*starts crying*
Me: *cracks fingers*
Me: Kaneki...*starts crying*
Someone: Let's go home, Skylar.
Me: *starts crying*
I didn't break down after Tokyo Ghoul. I did feel bad after Guilty Crown. I can't wait to see my reaction to Angel Beats. I think I'm going to watch that sooner or later. (Probably next week when I get my phone back)
Would anyone recommend this anime called Hiden no Aria? Heard of it and it would be nice to have some opinions before starting it because im still in the middle of Akagame no Shirayukime AND rewatching Ghost in the Shell.(Its just that good) o(≧o≦)o
Can someone help and inform me on this anime shown in this gif?
Might be wrong but....Touhou? idk when I see a girl with big red bow I think of Touhou first and it got these knives to dodges to...like bullet he.ll (honestly I knew nothing about touhou, my only knowledge of touhou came from undertale just for the fact that it's the fellow bullet h.ell game XD)
I don't mean to ask,but...
has anyone here ever watched Trigun or Trigun-Badlands Rumble?Just asking(though I freak on the inside if someone knows somthing I know).
I've seen the film. It was fun even though I understood nothing about the Trigun context. I'm still planning on watching the show eventually, but I keep forgetting about it.
Yea.Some people say that the anime show was better.I don't really care much.
Yeah I heard great things about Trigun. It's a golden oldie, and yet I haven't watched it. >_>
I'm not sure how far the film ties in with the show. It definitely happens somewhere during/after it but it was pretty coherent for the rest.
Glass Reflection(Anime reveawer on YouTube) said that it happend inbetween ep. 11 and ep. 12,but It might have happend after the anime show(most likely).
I've been watching this anime called New Game!.
I can say that this is one of my least favourites anime ever now. I didn't think I could dislike something so much, but I was wrong.
PROTIP: Do not watch New Game!.
Soul Eater is an anime I just go into,AND BOY I LOVE IT.Others may disagree, but It's my opion.
THE OPENING THOU
/raises the sort-of disagreeing hand
It was super cool! The style is amazingly unqiue and the build-up is real good. I just though that the ending was rushed and absolutely not cool. Figures that I opened one of the last manga chapters out of curiousity, and I found out that the ending of the anime was indeed rushed... a lot. A lot of super cool and important things were missing! Oh well ;_; the anime, bad ending or not was still worth the watch! I'd suggest you also read the last part of the manga though if you're up for it. It's cool.
Renosance(?) is awsome.
Huh.Thank you for informing me abut that.
Now I'll try to find the Manga.
Do you have any specific places that are good and have manga?(Probibly a dumb question, but whatever)
Resonance reminds me of the good old DDR/Stepmania days haha. It's probably the beat!
I'd try Kissmanga. It's one of the few websites that just displays manga by chapter instead of by page. Saves you some tedious clicking. They probably also have Soul Eater!
That explains it. I enjoyed Soul Eater, but the ending could've been better. I'll go check out the manga to it.
And yes, Resonance is rlly good ^^ One of my fav openings.
Yeah it was such a disappointment! So many things were yet to be wrapped up and.. ??? it's almost like they forgot about it. But then again, it's expected as most anime endings are terrible compared to their manga counterparts.
That mainly the case of anime catching up and being too close to the manga and decided to end it before the Manga, usually when this happended it either have 100+ filler arc to buy enough time for Manga to progress, End where it fit (like how Bleach anime end with fullbring arc) or going the different direction with the manga and have its own ending, that's the case for Soul eater and 2003 FMA.
Personally I'm contented with anime ending, kinda like it even but I admitted it's because I have a soft spot on the clinshe anime ending. However I'm disapointed we didnt' get to explored a lot of arc in anime format too, especially the spam yaga castle which happened around the same time when the anime still aired and there's a lot of thing to developed and explored while the anime just find the shorter route to concluded the story. Still I think it was being excuted alright for little time and material it had
I wonder if it's possible that they're going to pull a FMA brotherhood on Soul eater later on but with how different some plot was being concluded in the anime I think we might have to restart from the beginning and might ended up sacrificing the style and some VAs in the processed (just like FMA brotherhood!)
*vague manga spoilers below*
But I don't know maybe it's just me but I was weirded out by the manga ending. Thankfully the road leading to it was amazing and the ending didn't hinder it much(for me anyway) but the problem I have with it was mostly the execution. the concept/morale/character developement and conclusion as a whole was great, like when I was still weirded out by it I have to go and read a meta and it feels good that each of the main characters has something to answer to the main message of the manga at the end.
Yeah, that's usually how it is. And sometimes they just don't make enough money off an anime to make everything seem worthwhile.
At least the Bleach anime saved itself from a terrible ending, LOL.
I really hated the ending. It didn't feel like a wrap-up at all. So many things were yet to be explained, and they didn't really explain anything while making it seem like an actual ending. It was very disappointing, but at least there's the manga to fall back to. But AT LEAST it wasn't as bad as Uchuu Kyoudai, where the anime simply ended at a random episode. No wrap up, nothing. Everything was about to really, really begin, and then it just ended. I'm still salty about it. Then again, they deliberately gave the anime a slow pace so it wouldn't catch up with the manga, so I hope that new episodes are under way...
I'd love it if they actually did redo the Soul Eater anime. An anime faithful to the manga is always a sweet thing. That'd be super neat actually. FMAB and 2011 HxH were amazing and I need more anime like that in my life.
Actually, now I think of it, a lot of big name shounen manga have either bad or questionable endings. FMA comes to mind as a manga that ended and wrapped stuff up super well, as well as Dragon Ball if I don't count Super. LOL.
Ahh, some of those feel super nostalgic. Even that Naruto OP made me feel nostalgic.
Though the Death Note openings by MtH are clearly better than the first one >)
Has anyone watched Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) yet? Because it's amazing!
I truly wanted more after seeing it end though.
It's on my endless to watch list XD
I'm forseeing I may watch it by spring break.
IT' SO GOOD! part of me is dying to talk about it with someone but the other part doesn't want to spoil it for anyone!
The only thing that bothered me was some of the science behind it, it isnt noticable to the casual observer but to anyone that's studied orbital dynamics it kind of makes them scratch their heads (I'm a huge nerd I know). But I give it five stars for being an awesome movie!.
and yes the endless to watch list!
Ah, I know how that feels, wanting to talk about an anime but not wanting to spoil >.<
Lol, I can see that happening w/ you.
Considering how much you like science and tech, I'm wondering if you've watched Log Horizon. It's like SAO in a way with VR sorta stuff. I enjoyed first season and am currently watching second.
Watched both seasons of Log Horizon. I like better than SAO for personal reasons.
I can see why. I have my dislikes of SAO. But of the actual game itself, I would say SAO the game was well thought out, which is why I'm reading the progressive.
Not really, nost of my qualms aren't with the plot, it does seem a bit lazy on the second rewatch and pretty standard but its well paced (at least the Aincrad arc)
But the game design is terrible especially for a fast paced game like SAO (I have the same qualms about Destiny) I hate endless menus. it would probably just be better to have the ability to summon items directly from the inventory or at least add a few hotkeys/item holders where you can put potions, antidotes, crystals and the like with more being replenished from the inventory until you run out (kind of like Halo's grenades).
Or you could use a voice activated system so if you call for a healing crystal one appears in your hand. Or if you call out a hot key the item in that key appears in your hand.
User interface wise SAO is terrible.
Welp, I cut it some slack with it being considered first of its kind. Tru, a hot bar would be much better. But then again, it's missing a log out button so what could you've expected. But there's the quick change skill which could be used, though it's not as fast at all.
A voice command system would've been prefered. But I personally think Kayaba designed the game to be challenging to the players, so facilitations like voice command were removed.
I've watched it, was really good! I also wished for more at the end though.
My favourites are:
FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood/(the manga)
Assassination Classroom
Danganronpa (the video games)
Kuroko no basket
I've watched a ton more, but I can only think about these right now. :)
FMAB is love <3
*chants FMAB while shattering milk bottles with Ed*
As you can see, I'm currently been watching more anime since I came here last, and I have to agree, Undertaker and Grell are great. I'm binge-watching Black Butler again, as you can see.

"Hey Bassy!"
"Oh dear god."

Tsuna Reborn373
I've watched a few new anime this summer so my favorites have changed slightly.
Naruto, Fairy Tail, Fate/Zero, Angel Beats, Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan, Akame Ga Kill, Noragami, and Boku no Hero Academia are currently my top favorites.
