Hmmm.  Well, this episode doesn't seem to contradict my current hypothesis regarding Gronckles, to wit, they do create an internal fire to melt their rocks (and are possibly the only dragon species tough enough to tolerate the internal heat), but they do so right before spewing.  If they were to sustain that level of internal heat... well, we saw what happens when they try to melt a rock with a prohibitively high melting point.

Do you think Gronckle iron corresponds to any real-life alloy?  Duralumin, maybe?  Did Meatlug eat any bauxite?  Or perhaps it's a titanium alloy.

Note to Gronckle owners: be very cautious of allowing your Gronckle to eat neodymium ore.

Science

I don't know about the science behind it all, but it was a pretty hilarious episode. I'm far more amused than I should be involving the fiasco between Meatlug and Hiccup. Really should have though that one through, kid. XD

It looked like Steel to me, ie iron and carbon and trace others (such as silicon, manganese, phosphorous, aluminum). The fact that, as a sword, it was lighter than iron but stronger and able to hold a sharper edge...almost certainly steel.

That was my first thought,

That was my first thought, but I looked it up and steel isn't lighter than iron, on the whole, just stronger.  You can therefore make lighter things of equal strength, since you need less material, but it didn't look to me as though that's what was going on here.  I could be wrong, of course.

No, seriousely...

No, the Gronckle Iron is steel.  Must be.  And yes, steel would require less metal per sword (I suppose Gobber could have figured that while he was making it), so it would be lighter.  Just would be more accurate if it were ducks making the steel.

Also, this gives us a timeline.  This happened before Vikings had steel swords.  Hmm....

...ducks?   And my main

...ducks?

And my main reason for thinking that's not the case is that Gobber said he figured it wouldn't hold up in battle until he tested it, meaning he didn't figure out its strength (and thus decrease the amount of material) while he was making it.  I realize this is a minor inconsistency as these things go, but... *shrug*

+ULFBERH+T

So, this kinda corresponds to this. I just watched a Nova video on Netflix called "Secrets of the Viking Sword." It was about a group of rare blades made between 800-1000 BCE, all with the inscription "+ULFBERH+T"

These blades were found to be crucible steel of a quality on par with modern steel - uniform, just the right amount of iron and carbon, with silicates (sand and glass) to catch any slag so that it was practically pure. As in, 99% pure steel. Supposedly they were imported from the Middle East, the only place where crucible steel is known to be produced, but the name is Frankish (or appears as such).

It reminded me of Gronkle Iron, since it appears as such perfect steel, plus I know Meatlug swallowed sandstone in her eat-off with Fishlegs. That would provide the silicates, she must have eaten iron-bearing rock and something with carbon (or made her own carbon in digestion), the slag would have separated from the molten steel in her stomach and been digested like most rocks or stored for lava balls, then she regurgitated the steel, or shall I say, "Gronkle Iron."

Just a rather interesting connection. The video I mentioned is well worth a watch, too, trust me.
