TO ARMS!!!! 8D

Focus on one person for a bit, describe the atmosphere, have them attack/win/almost lose a few scattered fights, since you have dragons maybe take an aerial shot of the destruction? Try not to do too involved descriptions of all the specific moves, as that gets really boring really fast.

The Bean of speedy power

You is indeed. I is a snail xD

Also Flitt, if Astrid doesn't have an axeident, just think of her as being very matter of fact, almost soldier/military. This equals this. That equals that. Beause of Hiccup she fights to think better of people and outcomes but it doesn't come naturally to her, (at least that's how I read her character). She wants to believe and she wants to trust.

Many people see Astrid as a bit of a 'oh now that you're popular I like you' kind of a person but its so much deeper than that and untrue. From the beginning of the series (again, my perspective here)

She saw potential in Hiccup to be a great chief, but in her eyes he was slacking, making fun of everyone else and just not caring about their tribe and humiliated his own father in the process which she repspected.

She on the other hand saw the war that was about to become her own and it scared her, but having a soldier mentality she accepted that fate and tried to prepare. In an attempt to toughen up tried to harden her heart towards everyone around, espically those who seemed weak. They were the most likely to hidein this war.

In Romantic Flight Toothless showed he could be reasoned with, that they weren't fighting mindless, bloodthirsty monsters but intelligent creatures. *It was important that he made her feel completly out of control first; because without control her fearful side slipped out, and instead of eating her alive for showing such weakness, instead of destroying her when he had the upper wing, Toothless showed her kindness. Very big deal.*

when they landed in the cove and Hiccup explained the situation, Astrid also came to realize he wasn't the lazy, ungrateful person she had made him out to be, but cared enough to go against tradition and his father, to try something crazy dangerous and see if instead of gowing up into a world destined for heartache he could change it. To see if there was another way for the dragons and the vikings, a way that could bring peace.

She's still a very proud untrusting person but Hiccup has inspired her not to look at things for simply what they appear to be, but give to them a chance to show another side.

...that said if things don't show another side then she rips them apart xD

Well gotta go again, but I hope this helps... somehow... :3

Chapter Thirteen - Fort of the Deathgrippers

'Deathgripper!'
The scream cut through the air like a Timberjack through a sapling, alerting the Vikings into battle ready mode.
Astrid sprinted towards the yell, getting there in time to see a green Deathgripper, a blue Nadder and a reddish-brown Stormcutter land. Figures slid off of them, recognisable slim people with wings.
'Stormfly!' She and her dragon rushed to each other, greeting their friend like they hadn't seen each other for weeks. 'Flitt? Valka?' She said over Stormfly's happy rawkings, staring at the tusked dragon. 'Why have you brought a Deathgripper back with you?'
Flitt patted the dragon's head. 'He somehow broke free from Grimmel, so I befriended him.'
'Right. And how did you esca- what's happened to Bolt?' Astrid asked, noticing the Night Terror standing utterly still.
'Um, she accidentally got hit by a dart.'
    'Oh,' was all Astrid said.
Valka came over to her and put her hand on Astrid's shoulder, leading her a little way from the crowds. 'I've found where Hiccup is,' she said, her expression one of concern. 'I met Flitt when I was heading to Berk and she told me Grimmel was travelling northwest. I tracked him to his base, where I saw him corralling Hiccup and the others into his fort.' Valka looked Astrid in eye pleadingly, green irises to blue. 'We have to do something, Astrid. Anything.'
Astrid nodded. 'I'll gather the gang and head over. Anyone who kidnaps Hiccup has my axe to answer to.'
    'I'll come with you.'
'No. Valka, stay here. You and Cloudjumper have been flying for most of the day.'
'Hiccup is my son,' Valka said. 'I am going no matter what.'
The Hofferson huffed. She knew she wasn't going to completely change the Dragonblood's mind, but she could alter it slightly. 'We will attack tonight, under cover of darkness. Please go and rest, Valka. You will need strength for later'
Valka reluctantly agreed, knowing it was for the best, and moved off to find something to eat, Cloudjumper trailing behind her wearily.
Astrid watched her go, making sure that Hiccup's mother and the Stormcutter got food before she went to find the gang. She found them in the same place they had first landed, having an argument about whose house was going where. Quickly she told them her plan, assigning roles to each of them and telling them they would leave just before dusk.
    'Shall I come with you?'
Astrid turned to see Flitt standing beside a Titan Flightmare, her wings blending almost perfectly with his white scales. 'It'd be best if you stay here. You have your Deathgripper to take care of and Bolt to keep in check.' She glanced at the small Night Terror, who was still standing stock still in the same place as earlier. 'Plus I don't want you to get captured again.'
'Fair enough,' the white haired girl said. 'But I'll be ready if you need me.' She also looked at the Terror, who now had a pinkish Hobgobbler staring at her. 'Do you think she'll snap out of it soon?'
'I don't know,' Astrid replied, waving a hand in front Bolt's eyes. 'No reaction, so might be a while yet.'
'Hmmm,' Flitt gazed at the Terror thoughtfully, a glint flashing in her eyes.
'Right,' Astrid muttered, recognising the look. 'I'm just going to... See ya.'

***

The waning moon peeked over the edge of a cloud, its silver light playing eerily on the skull figureheads of the ships. On silent wings five dragons swooped down, circling a fortress of stone once before letting their humans off and vanishing back into the night. The people scattered, creeping into the foreboding fort as stealthily as their dragon scale armour would allow.
Astrid ran swiftly and quietly down a corridor, her shoes tapping softly on the rock floor. She came to a corner and cautiously peered around, a sconce with a flaming torch on the wall lighting her skin and a metal cell door. In the flickering shadows of the cell a figure stood, his green eyes staring straight ahead and auburn-brown hair ruffling  in a slight breeze.
'Hiccup?' Astrid asked, approaching the cell.
Hiccup's eyes focused on her and he smiled, teeth glinting in the firelight. 'Hey, Astrid.'
'Save it for later,' Astrid hissed, fumbling the heavy latch. 'We're getting you out first. Where are the others?' She looked behind him as he stiffly walked out of the cell, seeing only darkness.
'I don't know,' he replied, stretching his wings. 'We were separated when we came in here. I was put in here first and the others were led further in.'
The blonde Viking grabbed his arm and began dragging him down the corridor, her grip firm.
'Whoa, Astrid, stop!' Hiccup pulled back, his metal foot shrieking on the stone. Both of them froze at the sound it caused, holding their breath as they listened. 'It's a trap,' Hiccup hissed into the silence. 'Why else would he lay the fort out like this?' He pulled her back the way they'd come, but a terrible scraping, scuttling, clicking sound echoed down the tunnel, fast approaching. 'Ok, your plan's better.' They turned and ran, racing through the narrow tunnel and into a round open space that had wooden beams crossing back and forth. They saw the twins and Skelly higher up on a platform, waving to Snotlout and Fishlegs down below.
'Son! Astrid! Up here!' Valka called. She was crouched on a beam, her four wings outstretched and half concealed in shadow. 'Behind you!'
They turned and leapt back just as a barbed tail thunked between them, yellow, slitted eyes following it out of the tunnel. The Deathgripper slashed out with a mantis like claw, forcing Hiccup to take flight to avoid being skewered. All around the room clicking could be heard as more Deathgrippers appeared, six of them in total.
A sharp whistle brought the entranced dragons to a halt, also freezing Hiccup and Skelly for a moment. From below laughter emanated, amplified by the rock walls and height of the roofless fort. 'You think you can just sneak in here without being noticed?' Grimmel emerged from the shadows, his pale skin ghostly and white wings spread behind him. 'Well, there you are mistaken, oh great chief and tribe. No one gets past my Deathgrippers. No one can creep past me. No one can defy the true Alpha.'
The rattle of heavy chains chinked above, sending a cold shiver down Hiccup's spine. One glance told him what he feared, that a chain net had been stretched over the fort, the gaps to small for a Viking to squeeze through.
'None of your precious dragons are here to save you now. Without them, you are nothing.' Another whistle and the Deathgrippers charged, spraying acid at anything that moved, including each other. Hiccup flapped up and saw Skelly helping Snotlout and Fishlegs up to the higher beams, where Valka and the twins were already crouched, ready and alert. He grabbed Astrid's arm and pulled her up, pitching down once as a red wing nearly crushed them.
'Where are the others?!' He yelled when Astrid had scrambled onto the beam.
'I don't know! We found only Skelly and Arianwen,' Valka said over the groaning of metal as Cloudjumper caught hold of the net, pulling it up with almighty strength. 'We have to get out of here!'
'No!' Hiccup hollered, dropping around five foot. A spidery dragon's tail struck the wood where he had been only a moment before. 'I am not leaving them!'
'Hiccup! We can't do anything!' Astrid called down, shoving Fishlegs through the wavering gap in the net. 'Get back up here!'
'I cannot le—,' he was cut off by a Deathgripper's claw striking his wing, smashing him back into the stone wall. Its tail came down and the ivory coloured spike ripped through his wing membrane, pinning him in place. Its claws and tusks followed, sharp tips tearing ragged holes in his green tinged black scales. He screamed from the pain and punched the dragon in its yellow eye, something he never would have done unless in a situation like this. The Deathgripper snarled and reared back with a sweep of its red wings, yanking its tail from the wall and freeing the Dragonblood. Hiccup spread his bloodied wings and tried to glide, feeling the holes tear further.
He landed heavily on a beam, his wings shrieking in agony and his legs weak. With a look upwards he knew there was no way he was getting out, it was too high and there was nothing to climb up now that the acid had burned it some of the beams away. Valka was fighting off a Deathgripper with her staff, the dragon edging her back towards the wall and further away from her son.
A bright purple blast exploded over the deranged dragon and toppled it from the air, wings flailing. With a surge of pain Hiccup was lifted from the beam and up to the slowly closing gap in the net, the swift wingbeats of the white dragon carrying him making short work of diving through. There was a clank behind him as the net was released, along with the horrible clicking, snarling, growling mess of Dragontongue that was the venom-induced language of the Deathgrippers.
Arianwen gently placed him on Stormfly's back behind Astrid, the Nadder's scales warm and dry beneath his hands. He looked over to the Light Fury and nodded his thanks, but she seemed too preoccupied to notice, her red and blue eyes dark.
    'Hiccup...' Astrid started.
He leant against her strong back, dizzy from a wave of pain from his injured wings. 'Later,' he muttered. He dared not look at his wings, afraid of what damage he would find. Instead he shut his eyes, his mind thinking only of the Dragonbloods who were left behind and of his best friend, Toothless, who was never far from his thoughts, wondering if they were all relatively safe.

Unnoticed by dragons, Dragonbloods and humans alike, a huge white beast surged through the sea, tracking the shapes above. His part wings, part fins, useless for flying but excellent for swimming, propelled him though the water easily and his familiar pale eyes watched, sharp and piercing even through the late night murk.

Chapter Fourteen - Night's Flight

Through half closed eyes Hiccup saw an island, three times bigger than Berk and five times higher, coming closer and closer with every wingbeat. The moonlight was bright on its sheer cliffs, the rocks silvery and hard.
They swept down through the shadows of pine trees, Vikings stirring from their tents as the six dragons landed. Human voices called for Gothi when they saw Hiccup slip gingerly from the Nadder's back, his wings held stiff and awkward. She was by his side quicker than any Elder should have been, her staff in one hand and a needle and thread in the other. Swiftly, deftly she sewed the torn membrane together, her gentle yet strong hands making light work of the injury.
Hiccup sighed as something cool was spread over the wounds, the pain instantly diminishing. He hadn't realised how much his wings had hurt before the pain had lessened.
With a clearer mind he looked about him, seeing concerned Viking faces watching him and an even more concerned catlike dragon sitting a little way from him. As soon as Gothi had moved away Toothless ran over and gave him a good, slobbery lick.
'Urgh! Toothless!' Hiccup scolded, wiping warm dragon saliva from his face. 'Of all the greetings you could choose, you go for that one.'
Toothless ignored the last statement and circled his Dragonblood boy. 'Who did this to you?' He asked, inspecting Gothi's handiwork.
'Deathgripper,' Hiccup replied, twisting around to look at his friend and instantly regretting it. 'I didn't move quick enough.'
The Night Fury's lips curled back and his eyes narrowed. 'I should have been there. I should have stayed on Berk and been there to get you out, not gone along with Astrid to this place. I'm sorry, Hiccup. I'm a terrible friend.'
The Dragonblood turned to face the black dragon. 'No, you're not a terrible friend, bud. You're the best friend I could ever have.'
Toothless smiled goofily, suddenly very interested in his claws.
'You have done so much for me,' Hiccup said, stroking the Fury's head. 'It's time for me to return the favour.'

***

One of the few times Fury spit ever comes in useful, Hiccup thought.
He was mixing said spit with ground shed Night Fury scales in a wooden bowl, the movement of his shoulders making his wings ache. He'd been working since dawn, hammering, crafting, sewing and painting, and now finally he'd almost finished.
With a last swipe of a brush he held the black tail fin up for Toothless to scorch, the paint baking strong from the plasma blast. He folded it in and out to check that the metal mechanism worked and was
pleased to see that it all ran smoothly, cogs whining quietly.
He smiled sadly at the thought of Toothless flying without him, no longer needing the manual red fin he'd been using for over ten years. At least he could fly with his friend on full moons now.
Toothless bounded over and held his tail up to see if the fins were the same, panting excitedly.
Hiccup laughed and grabbed the wavering tail, attaching the new fin with tough leather straps. Toothless flexed his real fin and the fake one moved, too, almost exactly like Hiccup's would when he was in dragon form.
'Go and try it out, bud,' Hiccup urged.
Toothless sprang into the air and flew a circle, his flight unsteady at first but soon levelling out. His new tail fin adjusted with his movements as easily as a real one would, flipping back only slightly in a crosswind. He swooped around Hiccup happily and made a sharp turn as he nearly collided with a green Deathgripper, who had just come to land nearby. Toothless growled and landed in a crouch before the Dragonblood, sharp teeth showing from beneath his lips.
'It's ok, it's ok.' Someone jumped down from the scorpionlike dragon's back, loose strands of hair whipping around as a Light Fury alighted beside her. 'Nightreaper won't do anything.'
Hiccup ducked under Toothless's arched wing and saw Arianwen Shift to human next to Flitt. 'A Deathgripper?!' He said. 'Flitt, why have you got a Deathgripper?!'
'He found me when I was at Berk.'
'But how- Arianwen?' Hiccup noticed the Fury Dragonblood's distant look.
'Hmm?' Arianwen blinked back to reality.
    'Are you ok?'
    'Mmhmm.'
He shared a worried look with Flitt. Beside each other, they could almost have been sisters, he noted absently. 'What's wrong?'
    'Nothing.'
'Oh come on.' There was clearly something wrong, she was usually alert and direct, not distant and one-worded. 'You can tell me.'
'I said, nothing,' Arianwen snapped, her eyes becoming reptilian.
    'Arianwen...'
White wings flared up from the Dragonblood's back, tenting in annoyance. 'Dirwy! Lladdwr y Night Fury yw fy nhad!' She snarled. She Shifted to her dragon form in a blur of movement and shot up into the late morning sky, firing a purple plasma blast and disappearing through it.
They all stared at the spot Arianwen had vanished, incomprehension etched in their expressions. Toothless snapped out of it first and glanced at Hiccup. 'I'll go talk to her. If I can find her.' He lifted into the air and tacked back and forth before finding a scent and racing after it, his flight steady.
'Right. Er, did you know she could do that?' Hiccup asked the white haired girl.
'Nope,' Flitt said, fingering the point of the Deathgripper's tusk. 'I don't know what's up with her, she's been following me around all morning as if she wanted to tell me something.'
'Huh,' Hiccup said, watching Toothless's silhouette receding. He should've gone, too. But it was too late now, he wouldn't be able to fly until his wings had healed.
'Shall I go after them?' Flitt asked.
Hiccup tore his gaze from the sky. 'No. I think it's best if just one, er, dragon goes.'

***

'Arianwen! What's wrong?'
The Light Fury raged through the air currents mercilessly, her slim wings slipping through the mixture of gases like a sharp axe through wood. Toothless followed behind like a shadow, calling out to her and just making her more furious.
'Ewch i ffwrdd!' She yelled. 'Dim ond gadael llonydd i mi!'
    'Come back! I could help!'

Arianwen rolled up into the clouds then down again further away from the Night Fury. 'Nei du kan ikke!' She called back, flying into low cloud and vanishing. 'Ingen kan!'
Toothless shot after her and flew through the low cloud, nearly flying into the Light Fury when he emerged on the other side. 'Why don't you just tell me?' He turned his eyes to where she was looking below, and the sight that met his green eyes made his heart skip. 'Oh.'
On the blue-grey sea below them were a fleet of ships, armoured sides ploughing through the waves. The lead ship was being pulled along by two Deathgrippers, a Woolly Howl and a Nadder, long chains fixing them to the gunwales.
    And they were heading west.
'Å nei,' Arianwen muttered. 'Move!' She turned and dove, but even with her Fury speed she was not quick enough to escape a chain that snakes down and caught her tail. Toothless looked up and saw a strange metal structure quickly lowering, a Deathgripper on each of the four struts flapping with their strong wings to keep it aloft.
A chain of dragon proof metal whipped down and caught him by his tail, tipping him up and reeling him like a hooked fish. He struggled against it, flapping his wings and trying to worm from the grasp of metal.
Grimmel slipped down the chain, his wings spread for balance. He somehow managed to get a strong metal and leather head collar on the Night Fury's flattish head, nearly getting his fingers bitten off by the supposedly toothless dragon in the process. A leather strap wrapped around Toothless's flailing wings, pinning them in place.
By this time Arianwen had been hauled up beside him, her usually graceful white wings also pinned. Grimmel practically fell down the swinging chain and forced her into a head collar, a cruel smile playing on his thin lips. 'Vel, vel, min eldste. Er ikke dette morsomt?' he chuckled before climbing up to a small platform and whistling to the Deathgrippers. Within four wingbeats they were racing after the fleet of ships, towards New Berk and the whole of Old Berk's dragon and Viking population.
Arianwen and Toothless glanced at each other helplessly. Their friends were in danger and there was nothing they could do.

Great, now I've confused myself. Just to clarify, I think I meant 'dad', not 'death' (I dont speak Welsh, sooo google translate might have acted up). Did you mean it to be death in there or is dad correct?
Edit: yeah, so apparently capitalizing all the letters makes it change to something else.....hehe, my bad.

issa big climax coming!

So interesting that Grimmel is a bewilderbeast. Does that mean that in his dragon form he can control the other dragons, but not his own deathgrippers? That would be interesting.

Chapter Fifteen - Dragonblood vs Dragonblood

Hiccup glanced at the sky for perhaps the twentieth time in five minutes, his green eyes searching the clouds for a black shape.
'Are you sure you don't want me to go and look for them?'
He dragged his gaze from the sky and looked at Flitt, who was watching a Night Terror, who was watching Squishy and who, in turn, was watching Hiccup. The only ones who weren't watching someone were Flickering and Nightreaper, mainly because both of them had their eyes shut and were asleep in some long grass.
'No,' Hiccup said, returning his attention to his workbench, where he was clearing up after making Toothless's tail fin. 'They'll be back soon.'
The Deathgripper opened its yellow eyes and growled, raising its tusked head high. Hiccup heard wing flaps approaching and he dropped the hammer he was holding to the ground. Sprinting through the pine trees he skidded to a halt on a grassy cliff top, his heart almost stopping at the sight that met his eyes.
Hovering just off the edge of the cliff was a four strutted metal airship, a Deathgripper on the end of each strut and a platform in the centre. Dangling beneath like two fish on hooks were a black and a white Fury, struggling against their bonds and wobbling the strange metal structure.
'Toothless!' Hiccup yelled, half spreading his wings and feeling the stitching tear a little. He heard Vikings running up behind him, gasping when they saw Grimmel and the Furies.
'Hiccup!' Toothless called back, trying to swing himself round so he could see his rider. His distressed roar brought forth the riders dragons and many of the Berkian dragons, answering their Alpha with their own cries. On seeing the king of dragons chained up they surged forward, angry roars washing over the cliff.
'Call them off, Alpha,' Grimmel growled. 'Or the Dragonbloods d.ie.' He reached from his platform to a crossbow mounted on the base of one of the struts, swinging it around to point at the Light Fury. There was no dart loaded this time, but a proper, sharp tipped arrow.
'Why are you doing this, nhad?!' Arianwen snarled, looking up at the slim, pale man with a poisonous glare. 'Aren't these poor Deathgrippers enough for you?'
Grimmel chuckled, pointing the crossbow at Hiccup and fingering the trigger playfully. 'Why am I doing this? Well, there are two answers to that. Firstly, revenge. This Chief and his dragon, they mercilessly mur.de.red my mother eleven years ago.' He smiled, his thin lips stretching into a curved line. 'Though I see she didn't leave you without any battle scars.'
'What?' Hiccup said. He'd never mu.rde.red anyone in his life, let alone eleven years ago, when the dragons were still under the tyranny of... 'The Red Death was your mother?!'
Grimmel glared down at the one legged Dragonblood, his face impassively pale. 'Yes, Hiccup, that was her.'
Hiccup was speechless. He had always thought the Red Death had been a dragon driven mad by greed, but now she had turned out to be like him, a Dragonblood. He had k.illed one of his own kind.
'Secondly,' Grimmel continued. 'I am here to claim my rightful place as Alpha, that you,' he pointed the crossbow at Toothless, prompting the dragons circling the airship to snarl. 'You so ungratefully took from me.'
Toothless joined in with the snarling, his sharp teeth bared in a ferocious grin. The flock of dragons began to converge on the airship, too many for the only free flying Deathgripper to handle.
'Call them off and send them down to the boats, Alpha.' Again Grimmel swung the crossbow towards Hiccup, the arrow pointing straight at his heart. 'Or your boy d.ies.'
The Night Fury looked at Hiccup as if to say sorry. 'Do what he said!'
'And if there's any trouble,' Grimmmel yelled as his airship began to descend to the fleet of ships below. 'The Dragonbloods d.ie, too!'
Hiccup watched helplessly as his best friend was taken away and the Berkian dragons were forced into cages. He couldn't fly, he couldn't help them, he couldn't even help himself.
'Argh!' He growled, pacing the edge of the cliff. 'We have to get down there.'
    'How?' Tuff asked.
'We have no dragons,' Ruff stated.
'Well, except for you and Valka.'
Hiccup looked back at his mother. Yes, she could fly, but she could not carry all of them. His gaze travelled beyond Valka and he saw Flitt, her green and brown flightsuit on and the Deathgripper spidering over.
'We'll glide down there,' Hiccup said, gaining confused looks from the Vikings. 'Suit up, gang. We're going down.'

***

'Um, so... Jump off the cliff... With these?' Ruffnut asked, spreading her flightsuit wings uncertainly. 'Is this the best you've got?'
'No, you guys are the best I've got,' Hiccup said. He spread his own flightsuit wings, which he'd fashioned after his real ones. It had hurt Shifting to human form, the pain from his wings transferring to his back. As soon as he'd got his flightsuit on he'd Shifted back to hybrid form, his damaged wings extending through the cleverly hidden slits in his suit.
'Awww,' Ruffnut said, looking flattered. 'I'm with him, who else?!'
    'Sis, that's my line!'
Hiccup shook his head and readied to take a leap into the air. Behind him he heard the others lining up, the quiet rustle of fabric tickling his sensitive ears. I'm coming, Toothless, he thought. I'm coming for all of you.
    'Ready guys?'
A murmur of agreement later they were gliding through the air, some of them steadily some of them not. It took a lot of his willpower to not spread his black wings like Valka had done, and it was awkward keeping them folded while using the fake ones.
The boats grew closer quickly and with his sharp eyesight Hiccup saw Grimmel's airship hovering above the lead ship, the pale Dragonblood himself was perched on one of the struts, aiming a crossbow at the incoming riders.
'Watch out!' Hiccup called, only just dodging the arrow that was whistling through the air. The Vikings behind him dropped to the deck below, taking up their battle stances as Hunters charged towards them.
Hiccup swerved around another arrow and kicked Grimmel square in his chest, landing as best he could on the metal framework. As quick as his metal leg would allow, he scrambled down down to the chains holding the Furies, keeping an eye on the Hunter hanging on to the airship by his fingertips.
Grimmel whistled sharply and the lone Deathgripper powered over, spewing acid at Hiccup and accidentally catching the strut Grimmel was situated on instead. With a roar the pale man leapt down, catching the chain Arianwen was on and sliding down the length of it. 'Tid for en flytur, datter,' he growled. From his pocket he drew the dreaded vial of purplish green venom, the thin needle glinting, and screwed it into a hole in the head shackle. Immediately Arianwen stopped fighting and her eyes dulled, the pupils now hardly visible. 'Good luck, Chief Hiccup.' Grimmel pulled a metal ring and the bonds trapping the Light Fury released, sending both Hunter and dragon down. On instinct the Dragonblood opened her wings and spiralled up, circling the buckling aircraft in large, lazy rings.
Hiccup slipped down the chain to his friend, pulling the head collar off and throwing it in the ocean. With a glance up he saw the acid-struck strut snap, jerking his grip on the chain. With only three Deathgrippers now holding the airship, it was slowly sinking towards the ocean, the rate in which it fell increasing when another Deathgripper broke free.
The Night Fury Dragonblood worked at the ring, the odd angle and swinging not helping matters. 'Oh, c'mon, c'mon,' he muttered, desperation entering his movements.
Only a yard from the roiling sea and the aircraft jerked again, this time for the better. Hiccup finally got the pin holding Toothless's bonds out and they made a dash for open air, skimming the water so close that spray soaked them.
With Hiccup on his back, Toothless turned to see the airship plunging into the liquid, the brave Boneknapper who had been trying to hold it up diving away from the wave to come.
    But he never made it.
A Scuttleclaw's fire struck a fatal blow in one of the few vulnerable spots, right beneath his wing. Skelly smashed limply into the water, his wings floating brokenly on the surface and his kinked left horn reaching to the sky like a tree branch. His blue eyes were half closed, the mischievous sparkle extinguished.
'See what happens when you disobey the Alpha?'
They spun in the air and faced Grimmel, the pale Dragonblood's skin blending with the Light Fury's scales.
'No,' Hiccup said. 'What I see is a power hungry Dragonblood intent on controlling dragons for his own gain.' Beneath him, he felt the subtle temperature rise that preceded a plasma blast seep through Toothless's scales, a faint blue light decorating the base of the Night Fury's spikes. The ball of fire itself shot forth with powerful ferocity, singeing Grimmel's hair as he forced Arianwen to dive.
Toothless followed with quick reflexes, tailing the Fury and Hunter. They sped around the edge of the island, the incredible speed they were flying at taking even Hiccup's breath from him. With a few strong wingbeats Toothless soared above the Light Fury, gaining headground with every sweep of his black wings.
'Ok, here's the plan,' Hiccup hissed to the Night Fury. 'We swoop round in front of him and I'll knock him off. You keep him at bay as best you can, bud.' He crouched on Toothless's back, flightsuit wings ready. 'No one harms our friends and gets away with it.'
Grimmel looked back to see that his pursuers had vanished and he pulled Arianwen to a halt, his unnerving pale eyes cold. Hiccup took the opportunity to leap from the black dragon's back, extending his fake wings to their maximum. Grimmel turned quickly with his crossbow raised, having heard the slight whistling that the Chief's flightsuit wings made.
Again?! Hiccup thought. He dropped below the dart with a flick of his arms, rolling to the side and, for the second time, kicked Grimmel h.ard.
The pale Dragonblood was flung from Arianwen, his long arms reaching out and grabbing Hiccup's metal foot before he fell. The Chief clung to the entranced Fury's neck, his skinny arms straining to keep a hold and his hands fumbling with the head collar. He dragged it from the dragon's head and dropped it on Grimmel, hoping to dislodge his enemy's grip.
'Hiccup?' Arianwen groaned, blinking her blue eyes. 'Toothless?...!'
The Dragonblood Chief followed her gaze and his heart leapt with fear. Toothless was flapping irregularly, his eyes half closed and a dart protruding from his chest. As Hiccup watched his dragon's lime green eyes closed and he fell, his wings fluttering weakly.
Hiccup looked at Arianwen, catching her blue and red eye. 'Save him,' he told her, and let go.
Time seemed to slow, the air rushed past them lazily, the sun poked its rays through the grey cloud and Grimmel ripped Hiccup's flightsuit wings apart. Hiccup didn't even fight the Dragonblood, there was no point when they would both soon be shark food.
The deep grey ocean rushed up in a sudden catchup of time, the waves looking remarkable calm, and he closed his eyes for what he thought was the final time.
His eyes snapped open as he was yanked up with powerful force, white, strong paws wrapped around his arm. Arianwen winged up, her breath harsh and loud in his ears. Grimmel, still attached to Hiccup's foot, growled and tried to climb higher. Hiccup reached down with his free arm and undid the catches holding his fake foot in place, metal screeching on metal as the last catch snapped from the weight.
'No!' Grimmel howled, his arms flailing. He plummeted into the water with a great splash, white water foaming over where he vanished below the surface.
As Hiccup was lifted higher he saw the skin of the liquid bulge and a white beast move below the surface, cold, pale eyes looking up.

Chapter Sixteen - Goodbye for Now

'Hey, bud,' Hiccup murmured. He knelt down by his Fury friend's head, running his hand over the smooth ebony scales. Toothless snuffled and cracked his eyes open, the green irises like Deathgripper acid in pitch darkness.
'Whaa-aaa?' He mumbled, raising his head from the grass. 'What happened? Where's Grimmel?'
    'We defeated him. For now.'
Toothless growled slightly, noticing the crowds of Vikings gathering around. 'For now?'
Hiccup bowed his head as dazed Dragonbloods wandered to the front of the throng, their hair tangled and clothes grubby from the ship's hold. 'Grimmel is still out there,' he said in humantongue. 'I saw him Shift to a Bewilderbeast.'
Eret spoke from beside Skullcrusher, his hand on the armoured dragon's side. 'He will be back. If I know that Hunter as well as the next Trapper, then he will return for our dragons, and maybe even us.'
The Chief pulled himself up by hanging on to Toothless, an idea forming in his mind. It was an idea he did not want to think about and didn't think he'd ever be thinking, but in the circumstances they were in now he could not see many options.
'Arianwen,' he whispered. She turned to him, her pale skin even paler than usual. 'The Skjult Verden is inaccessible for flightless dragons, right?'
She nodded, her eyebrows knitting together.
    'Hmm.'
Toothless looked back at him, concerned curiosity written in eyes. 'What're you planning?'
Hiccup hesitantly told him what he thought in Dragontongue, the Dragonbloods nearby looking at him in disbelief.
'You can't be serious,' a Dragonblood with tan Deathsong wings said.
'I am,' he told her. 'I am serious about this.' He raised his voice so the whole crowd could hear, his eyes playing over the faces looking at him. 'I hate to suggest this, but with Grimmel still on the loose I think the best option would be for if... all the dragons go to the Hidden World. It is safe there, protected from Hunters, and has all things they need.' Hiccup held up a hand as the protests started, his right hand still holding onto Toothless. 'I cannot force you to go, dragons. You have to make that decision for yourself. But I urge you to think on the situation, to make the right choice, for yourself and your riders.'
The dragons shuffled their wings, scales rustling. A few of them sat down by their Vikings stubbornly, while others looked from the Alpha to Hiccup to their riders and back again.
'It is me Grimmel is after,' Toothless said. 'If anyone should leave, it's me.'
Hiccup crouched down and held the Night Fury's head, looking into the lime coloured eyes. 'Yes, but... I don't know if I could live without you. I know it's for the best and is the safest option, and I suggested it... But... Oh, Toothy.' He rested his forehead to the Fury's forehead, an escapee tear trickling down his cheek and splashing onto the black scales.
'As you said,' Toothless murmured. 'It is for the best.' He pulled back reluctantly and looked to the crowds, some dragons saying goodbye to their riders and others standing stonily. 'We leave now,' the Alpha called. 'I know it's sudden, and I'm sorry that we have to do this, but with the Hunter still alive we have to get away to somewhere safe.'
One by one, dragons moved to the edge of the cliff, their riders watching through tear blurred eyes. About half of Berk's dragon population stood ready to fly, and half of those were riderless.
'Hookfang...' Snotlout said as his Nightmare made his way over to the leaving party, his scaled head low. Barf and Belch went next, their usually high held tails dragging on the ground.
Hiccup's and Toothless's eyes met, green gaze to green. 'Well, I guess this is goodbye,' Hiccup murmered.
'Yeah,' Toothless responded. 'I'll miss you. Even with all the times I've crashed into rocks because of you, you useless human.'
The Chief chuckled sadly. 'Make that Dragonblood, bud.' He hopped forwards and hugged his friend, not wanting to ever let go. 'I'm going to miss you too, Toothless.' Hiccup leaned back and placed his hand on the Fury's snout, his skin mottled with scales. 'I promise that I will find you when it is safe, when we can again live in peace.'
Tears trickled down his cheeks and he shut his eyes to slow them, feeling the dragon's scales rough on his faintly scaled skin. With a sad sigh Toothless pulled back, the warmth of his hide vanishing with only the afterwarmth remaining.
When Hiccup opened his eyes again Toothless, with his wearle of dragons in tow, was gliding away to the west, black body silhouetted against the sky.
'He will return,' Arianwen, who was standing nearby in dragon form, said. 'You two share the strongest bond I have ever seen.' With a flick of her wings she dove off of the cliff and sped after the receding shapes, her white scales blending with cloud until she was no more than a ghost flitting high above.
With a final look after his friends Hiccup turned and almost fell, forgetting that he had no foot. Astrid caught him before he hit the ground, supporting him as they made their way back to the rising village.

***

Months passed by and more dragons left, first the riderless ones, then the villagers ones, and finally Stormfly and Meatlug departed. Even some of the Dragonbloods decided to go to the Hidden World. New Berk felt empty without the scaled beasts, as if its soul had flown away with them.
Hiccup stood on the cliff where he had said goodbye to his best friend, his gaze distant. He hardly noticed when Astrid came up beside him, so far away his thoughts had flown. Only when she playfully punched his shoulder did he blink from his reverie.
'What was that for?' He asked, even though he was used to it by now.
'That,' she said, walking around to stand in front of him. 'Is for not listening to what your heart is telling you.'
He sighed, looking at the ground. 'My heart us telling me two different things. It's telling me to go to the Skjult Verden and find Toothless, but it's also telling me to stay here and Chief the village.' He looked up at Astrid, her hair swirling in the breeze. 'I don't know if to bring the dragons back now that we have seen no sign of Grimmel or the Hunters, or to wait until we know for sure that we're safe.'
'Hiccup,' Astrid clasped his shoulder, making him focus his attention on her. 'Out of what your heart is telling you, which is the strongest?'
'To go to the Hidden World,' he answered honestly.
She pushed him towards the cliff edge with a determined shove. 'Then go. I'll look after the village while you're gone. You need time to be with the dragons, where your soul belongs.'
'But I can't just leave! I'm the Chief!'
'Yeah, you can. I can rope Valka and Gobber in to help, so don't worry.'
    'But—!' He protested.
Astrid took her axe from its sheath on her back, pointing it at him. 'Go. Before I poke you off with this.'
'Fine.' He really didn't want to be on the receiving end of an axe held by a Hofferson. 'Just make sure the twins don't blow the island up.' He leapt off of the high cliff and Shifted to his dragon form, spreading his healed wings wide. With a joyous roar Hiccup flew up into the cloud and sped west, cold air battering his warm scales and the feeling of freedom coursing through his veins.
The Kløft av Tåke came into view all too soon, the hours it'd taken to fly there passing like only a handful of minutes. Hiccup swooped down excitedly and dove into the chasm, half closing his eyes against the salty spray. He looked around at the glowing rocks, remembering the first time he'd been down here with the gang. They'd flown through a cloud of fireworms at around about the place he was now, orange glow lighting the dragons scales a multitude of colours.
But there were no fireworms, not a single one was fluttering around. In fact, now that he looked around, there were no dragons at all. He felt certain that he should've seen at least a Gronckle by now, of maybe a Nadder atop a pillar of rock, but the whole place was silent of wingbeats save his own.
Concerned now, he wove through the pillars until he came to the tunnel leading to the Crystal. Unusually it was unguarded, no Eruptodon blocking his way through. With a couple of flaps he was through and gliding up, his muscles tense.
And what he saw below him filled every ounce of him with dread.

The End

The end of book three. The fourth, The Grim Beast, is coming whenever I've figured out what to write XD

This is what I know so far.

  • It's from Grimmel's pov.
  • It is partly these three Db books.
  • It has a bit of his backstory.
  • It is what happens after this one.
