Chapter Seven - Dragon Masters

'Urgh!' Toothless growled. 'These darn baby Scuttleclaws!' He swatted at the hatchlings trying to play with him, a scowl on his black scaled face. 'Why-' bat. 'Won't-' bat. 'They-' bat. 'Go-' smack. 'Away!'
'They're babies, they don't listen to anyone,' Hiccup laughed. He was sitting on the edge of the Alpha's pool, wings half out in the blueish light and a thoughtful expression on his human face.
'Much like you, then,' the Fury grumbled. He slapped a Scuttleclaw that was chewing his tail.
Hiccup stood up and stretched, ignoring his friend's last comment. 'Well, bud, we can't wait around for Drago to attack this place. We've got to find him first.' He looked around at the Sanctuary, nodding to the dragons watching. 'Let's go.'
A hand clamped across his mouth and another on his shoulder, pinning him in place. A deep, gruff voice whispered in his ear before he was released. 'Easy now.'
'Are you kidding me?! How did you get in here?!' Hiccup hissed. His father stood in front of him, tense and ready to leap into action.
'The same way we're getting you out.'
    'We?!'
Gobber looked out of the tunnel, beckoning to them. 'All clear!'
    'Come on.'
He rushed after Stoick, who had disappeared into the tunnel, using his wings to leap-glide between rocks. 'Dad! There's something you need to know!'
    'Tell me on the way.'
'This isn't an on-the-way kind of thing, actually...' He glanced back and saw that Toothless had got his head stuck in a narrow passage, so that the dragon had to reverse and go through sideways. '...more of the Earth-shattering development variety.'
'Just add it to the pile.'
'Dad!' Hiccup said with an exasperated growl. 'Unlike most surprises I spring on you, this one you'll like. I promise! You just have to...'
Stoick had stopped on seeing Gobber frozen in the middle of the tunnel, his back to them. 'Uhh,' the blacksmith said, turning and edging past the Chief. 'You might want to take this one.'
Stoick drew his sword and advanced on the opening of the tunnel, expecting trouble.
'Dad, is the sword really necessary?'
Apparently not, because he dropped it moments later. Hiccup peered out from behind his father and saw Valka, her four wings folded and her blue armour on, standing by a wall of ice.
'I know what you're going to say, Stoick.' Valka said. 'How could I have done this? Why didn't I come back to you? To our son? Why didn't I show who my true self is? Well, what sign did I have that you could change, Stoick? That anyone on Berk could? I pleaded so many times to stop the fighting, to find another answer, but did any of you listen?'
Stoick seemingly hadn't heard her. He was approaching slowly, as if she were some wild dragon that could take flight any moment, which in a way she was. His small green eyes were wide as she backed up to the ice, her wings pressing flat against the cold surface.
'Oh, stop being so stoic, Stoick,' she said, her slitted pupil eyes wide. 'Shout, scream, say something!'
A second's silence, only their breath could be heard.
'Youre as beautiful as the day I lost you.'
Hiccup and Gobber glanced at each other and sighed in relief. That could have gone a whole lot worse.

***

    Astrid

On silent wings the five dragons swooped down, entering Drago's camp like ghosts on the wind. Stormfly dropped Eret face first into the snow, then landed on top of him and sat there proudly.
'Agh! I got you here, now get this thing off me!'
Astrid slid down from the saddle. 'Never take a toy from a dragon. Don't you know anything?'
'Why does this keep happening to me!' Eret muttered from beneath the Nadder, who had wrapped her wings around him like a broody hen.
The other Riders were gathered along a ridge, looking down on the fleet of warships. Their dragons stayed back and rested in the snow after their long flight.
'What's down there?' Astrid asked Fishlegs, pointing to a rippling in the water.
The Ingerman fished out a set of dragon cards from a pouch, riffling through them as he tried to find a match. 'Large diameter bubbles, massive lungs, cold water deep dweller. I'm thinking class five leviathan, maybe six.'
Astrid heard her Nadder give a warning grunt before taking off, leaving Eret in the snow. Before any of them could react cloaked people ran out of hiding and darted the dragons, making the creatures fall to the ground, unconscious. More men hurried over, surrounding the gang and cutting off any chance of escape.
Their hands were tied behind their backs with strong rope, their weapons confiscated. Astrid fought hard against the man trying to tie her up, and it took three of them to hold her in the end. They were herded like sheep down an icy, snowy slope, their dragons being hauled along on wooden boards behind. Drago's men shoved them up a gangplank and onto a ship, forcing them to the front of the vessel by poking their spears at them.
Eret was pulled past them and dearmed as Drago approached. The "Dragon Master's" face was disfigured by scars, his black dreadlocks framing his mean expression. He eyed the Trapper like he was an irritating mouse that needed to be squashed, but was too quick to be caught.
'Drago!' Eret said jovially while being pushed forward by the cloaked men. 'Always great to see you, my friend! As you can see, I'm right on time with a new batch of dragons, just like I promised.'
Drago looked at the waking Hookfang with hard dark eyes. The Nightmare shook his head of the drugged sleep and snarled at the approaching Dragon Master, spewing hot fire at him, the tongues of flame licking around the scarred man. For a moment Astrid's hope rose, for surely the heat of Nightmare fire could penetrate even a dragon skin cloak. But it sank again as the fire petered out and Drago roared his defiance, sounding very much like a dragon. He thwacked his staff on the deck, small seed pods rattling in the metal tip, and Hookfang flinched back. With another deranged roar from the Master the dragon lowered his head to the floor, unwillingly allowing Drago to place his foot on Hookfang's snout.
'You are mine now, dragon,' Drago said as wisps of smoke leaked from the Nightmare's nostrils.
    'Hookfang!...'
    'What are you doing?!'
Eret glanced at the gang, his expression indiscernible. 'And as an added bonus, I also caught you their riders. No extra charge.'
'Are you kidding me?!' Astrid all but shouted.
'Turns out there's a whole bunch of them—' Eret was cut off by Drago's strong, scarred hand gripping his throat.
    'How many?'
Astrid felt a pang of relief. They hadn't been caught.
'How many?!' Drago snarled again after only getting a choking sound from Eret.
'Hundreds!' Astrid stepped forward, making Drago's men raise their blowpipes in alarm. 'A whole island full!'
'I wouldn't worry,' the Trapper choked out hoarsely. 'My men are hunting them down. They won't know where you're hiding. I promise that.'
'Oh, yes they will.' Drago dropped Eret to the deck, his full attention on the blonde Viking. Ok, think, think! 'They know we're missing and they have tracking dragons. If you so much as touch us, Hiccup will—'
    'Hiccup?' Drago smirked.
'He's not a problem. Trust me,' Eret said from his place on the floor.
Astrid forged on, unable to stop now that she'd started. 'He's only the son of Stoick the Vast, heir to the throne of Berk and the greatest Dragon Master the world had ever seen!'
'Dragon Master?' Drago growled. 'I ALONE control the dragons!'
'And unless you let us go, right now,' Astrid hissed, ignoring the twins, who were saying something about crying babies. 'He will blast through here on his Night Fury and blow your entire fleet of ships to splinters!'
Drago grabbed Eret again, who had just climbed to his feet. 'First there was one rider, and now the whole of Berk?! And YOU led them to me!' He threw the Trapper down and stormed across the deck, his heavy footsteps echoing menacingly. 'STOP ALL PREPARATIONS! WE MUST ATTACK THE RIDER'S NEST AT ONCE!' He smiled cruelly at the captured riders, his face contorting into a horrific mask. 'We will take down their Alpha... Then we will take Berk!'
Eret had scrambled back up, rubbing his bruised throat. 'You're overreacting!'
'And get rid of him,' Drago spat as he stomped out of view.
    'Drago...'
One of the men surrounding them threw his spear at the trapper, the deadly point shining as it struck blue dragon hide. Stormfly had landed practically on top of Eret, protecting him from being speared. She grunted when a dart hit her neck, falling to the deck, unconscious.
'Stormfly!' Astrid cried out. Eret looked from her to the dragon, his eyes wide as he too had his hands tied behind his back.

***

The clang of metal on metal rattled her nerves, the groan of the ship shook her to her soul. This could be it, for her and the gang. Shoved out into the churning, freezing ocean and left to d.ie in the clutches of the ice. Their dragons had been taken away, there was no way to run with armed men behind, pointing spears and blowpipes at their backs. This was the end.
'Could this day get any worse?' Snotlout moaned.
'Uh, let me see,' Tuffnut said, fidgeting with the ropes tied tight around his wrists. 'You'll jump into freezing cold water and then hidefrom drowning.'
Eret, ignoring them, peered over the edge to the rough waters below. 'Looks refreshing. Please,' he smiled to Astrid. 'Ladies first.'
Astrid decided to throw one last insult before she froze to death. 'You are a steaming heap of dragon—'
    'Duck.'
She dropped to the deck as Eret pivoted on his heel and kicked the guard down, catching the short handled spear that flew from the soldier's grasp with his tied up hands and cutting through the rope. He knocked out a man trying to run away and darted another with a drugged dart that he'd picked up from one of his fallen comrades. Fishlegs barrelled into two more and pinned them to the deck, and the twins tripped another over.
Eret cut the gangs ties. 'So? Are we going to save your dragons and get out of here or not?'
Astrid just nodded, shocked at the Trappers quick change of heart.
'Check every trap,' Eret commanded. 'They're here somewhere.'

Chapter Eight - Fallen Kings

Hiccup was thrilled to have found his mother, but was not so thrilled with her cooking. Almost raw fish with a pinch or ten too much salt was not something you could get accustomed to easily. The dragons ate most of it, Grump especially, even though he was half asleep.
It must have been around two hours since Stoick had come, enough time to explain where Valka had been living for the past twenty years, why she hadn't gone back to Berk, and most importantly, to Hiccup anyway, about Dragonbloods. After all the explaining Stoick and Valka had even had a dance, to lighten the mood a little, he supposed, before they had a family hug, with Toothless sticking his head in.
'Thank Odin you didn't listen to me, son,' his father said with a laugh. 'Or we never would have found each other.'
Toothless growled and looked around, his ears swivelling. Hiccup heard it too, a war cry made up of thousands of voices and crashes from outside the Sanctuary. He and Valka shared a look, green eyes meeting green eyes, then they both rushed through the tunnel and out onto a jut of ice. Below they saw thousands of soldiers, hundreds of ships and many dragon traps, some of which were already tight shut.
'Oh, no...' Valka stumbled back, right into the Chief.
'Val! It's alright, it's alright.' He said, catching her by her shoulders. 'We're a team now, what do we do?'
    'Save the dragons.'
    'Aye. You got it.'
Hiccup Shifted back to human and leapt onto Toothless, both taking off into the sky like a sheep from a catapult. They shot around the Sanctuary, observing the situation and listening out for anything useful. Right below them green gas leaked from a trap, then ignited. A Zippleback flew up on an explosion of flame, a rider on one of its heads.
    'Surprise!' Tuffnut yelled.
Ahead Hiccup saw a Nadder, Gronckle and Nightmare brake free of traps, all with Vikings on their backs. Stormfly flew over, with Astrid and Eret clinging to her.
'Welcome aboard, Dragon Rider!' Hiccup said to the Trapper.
    'Thanks,' Eret gulped. 'I think.'
Gobber charged down on Grump, knocking out a line of archers. Barf and Belch spread gas over the traps and Hookfang lit it, freeing the captured dragons. Meatlug spewed lava on the catapults, burning through the wood and melting metal.
'Where have you been?' Astrid asked, ducking as Fishlegs and Meatlug flew over.
'Oh, you know. Catching up mum,' Hiccup smiled, looking at Valka and Cloudjumper. On his four, strong wings the Stormcutter rose, with Valka standing on his back with her blue armour on. Behind them the Alpha crashed out of the Sanctuary, roaring his rage to sky.
    'That's your mother?!'
The Dragonblood grinned. 'Well, now you know where I get my dramatic flair.' He flicked his helmet down and banked away, swooping down to fire at a trap holding a Zippleback.
A deranged scream ripped the air, along with a faint rattling. Hiccup looked over and saw his mother facing Drago, who was swinging his staff around like a lasso and screaming at the top of his voice. The sea around the ships churned, frothing up as something huge thrashed out of the water. A Bewilderbeast, bigger and darker than the Alpha, roared his challenge. Cold water streamed from his scales, running into his pale, slitted pupil eyes. He smashed his shackled tusks into the water, creating waves that swamped the nearby ships.
'Come on!' Drago shrieked. 'Take down the Alpha!'
Without any warning, Toothless shot down and darted around the dark Bewilderbeast, trying to distract him from his quarry. Valka and Cloudjumper, now in the air, did the same, almost getting squashed as the two massive dragons locked tusks. The dark one reared up, using his full weight to crash down in the Alpha. The lighter one fought back gallantly, wrestling his foe back to all fours. The dark Bewilderbeast shoved his tusks under the Alpha, lifting him high and putting him off balance. With a mighty heave he pushed the light dragon to the ground, stabbing his sharp tusks into the Alpha's unprotected belly.
'Noooo!' A chorus of voices wailed.
The champion lifted his head and roared, bringing the attention of every dragon to him. Hiccup saw a Raincutter fly past, its pupils so tight there was almost nothing but iris.
'We've won,' Drago crowed. 'Now finish her!' He pointed his staff at Valka.
The Bewilderbeast spewed ice at the dragon and rider, catching Cloudjumper's tail in the freezing blast. Stoick rushed to help, along with Gobber, leaving Hiccup and Toothless hovering between Drago and his parents.
Those two... He shifted to hybrid form and urged Toothless down, hissing his plan to the Night Fury. When they were right above the Dragon Master Hiccup leapt off and landed in front of Drago, while Toothless took up position behind, baring his fangs at Drago's back.
'This... Is the great Dragon Master?' Drago laughed, his mad eyes eyeing Hiccup. 'The son of Stoick the Vast? What shame he must feel.'
'All this loss, and for what?' Hiccup got right to the point, his wings half spread menacingly. He growled to Toothless, who growled back an affirmative to the question he was asked. 'To become unstoppable? To rule the world? Dragons are kind, amazing creatures that can bring people together. And you should know.'
'Or tear them apart.' Drago unhooked his metal arm, which Hiccup had suspected had been fake. 'You see, I know what it is to live in fear. To see my village burned, my family taken. To feel my wings ripped from my back. Even as a boy, left with nothing, I vowed to rise above the fear of dragons and liberate the people of this world.'
    'Then why a dragon army?'
'Well,' Drago glanced at the Bewilderbeast. 'You need dragons to conquer other dragons.'
'Or maybe you need dragons to conquer people,' Hiccup glanced at the new Alpha too. 'To control those who follow you, and get rid of those who won't.'
    'Clever boy.'
'The world wants peace, Drago,' Hiccup said, his wings now almost fully out. 'And we have the answer, back on Berk. Just let me show you.'
'No! Let me show you!' The Dragon Master snarled partly in Dragontongue. He roared to the Alpha, calling him down to fight. 'No dragon can resist the Alpha's command. So he who controls the Alpha,' Drago pointed his staff at the Bewilderbeast. 'controls them all.' He pointed his staff at Hiccup, a cruel smile curving his lips.
Hiccup looked up at the Alpha and immediately a rattling filled his ears, incessant and painful. He felt himself slipping away, losing his grasp on his thoughts and actions as the dragon's will took control. The sound rattled his very soul, jerking his mind from his command. In a ditch attempt to brake the hold on him he Shifted to human, but instead of his wings shrinking, they grew. The Alpha made him Shift to his dragon form and turned him around to face his best friend, charging a blast as he stalked forward. He watched through red tinged sight as his bud backed against an ice wall, nowhere to run, unable to fly. He felt the fire rise up his throat, helpless to stop it, and saw the bright blue flash as it shot towards his friend. In slow motion he saw a human figure leap in front of the Night Fury, taking the blast instead of Toothless. For a second everything was still, almost calm, before the shock of what had happened snapped him from the Alpha's command.
His father lay in shards of ice, unmoving, not breathing. Hiccup Shifted to human and ran to Stoick, pulling him over onto his back and pushing broken ice off of him. Valka skidded to a halt beside him, crouching and listening for a heartbeat.
Her eyes closed and she dropped her head onto Stoick's chest, her breathing ragged.
'No...' Hiccup sobbed. 'No...' He can't be gone, he can't. He looked down at his hands, as if seeing them for the first time, then at his father's burned body. 'I did this.'

Good chapter! I'll be honest, part of why I didn't track right away was because I don't (don't hate me) really like the second movie- but I like your version of it Flitt ^^ Much more interesting

Chapter Nine - A Chief Protects His Own

Hiccup stood up quickly, trying to contain the tears forming in his green eyes. He'd done this. He'd shot his own father, even if he hadn't been in control. He was a monster.
He looked up at his friends, at the dragons, at his mother, at Toothless.
    At the Alpha.
The huge dragon was looking down on him, pupils slits and two spikes between his eyes vibrating, creating the rattling sound. Hiccup could feel him trying to take control through his grief, the ringing in his ears fading in and out of existence. If that thing got control again, who knows what it would make him do.
With a barely contained sob he ran, not looking where he was going, just knowing he had to get away before he harmed his friends. He heard Valka telling everyone to leave him be, that he needed time alone.
He found himself on an icy ledge, half of it crumbled and smashed, but still enough left to serve as a hiding place. He sat down on a chunk of blue ice and stared unseeingly at his hands, thoughts whirling through his mind at a rate he could not comprehend. One stuck, though. One that had been there, somewhere in his mind, since the night he first Shifted ten years ago.
    I'm a monster...
He'd avoided thinking of it before, always pushed it back into its box and carried on with other things. But he could not ignore it now, not after what he'd done.
His inner dragon rose in protest to his thoughts, and he clenched his fists, pushing it back down. He could not let his beast side win out, not now, not ever. Not even on full moon, he would not allow himself to shift, to give in to the primal beast.
He shut his eyes against the world, not seeing the Alpha take control of all the dragons, including the riders dragons. It was only when he heard Toothless's distressed cry that his eyes snapped open. He rushed to the edge of the ledge and saw, to his horror, his bud trying to fly up to the other entranced dragons above the Alpha.
Drago watched calmly, chuckling to himself as a thought came into his insane mind. When Toothless leaped past he hooked the end of his staff on the saddle, pulling the dragon to the ground. The man climbed on his back and the Night Fury struggled into the air, his wings pumping hard to keep them aloft. 'Gather the men and meet me at Berk!' He ordered.
'Toothless!' Hiccup yelled, but there was no reaction from the dragon.
'Move out!' Drago, Toothless and the Alpha began to head west, over the rough sea to Berk, all the dragons following in their wake. The ships set sail minutes later, setting their sights on the Bewilderbeasts head, still visible above the waterline.

***

'May the Valkyries welcome you, and lead you through Odin's great battlefield,' Gobber spoke, his voice choked as the broken boat baring the Chief's body drifted out on the night-dark ocean. 'May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we may hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla, and we know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings. For a great man has fallen. A warrior. A chieftain. A father. A friend.'
Hiccup lifted his bow, sighting along the burning arrow with tears in his eyes, the flames flickering reflection in his human pupils. With practiced ease he pulled the string back and fired, watching the orange arc track across the sky and hit the boat, lighting the cloth covering his father. The other Dragon Riders followed suit, the flaming arrows looking like fireflies as they rained down.
'I'm sorry, dad,' Hiccup whispered. 'I'm not the Chief that you wanted me to be. And I'm not the peacekeeper I thought I was. I don't know...' What I am anymore. I thought I knew, but... How could I do this? To my own father...
Valka laid a gentle hand on his shoulder, gazing out at the burning wreck. 'You came early into this world. You were such a wee thing. So frail, so fragile. I feared you wouldn't make it. But your father... He never doubted. He always said you'd become the strongest of them all. And he was right,' she turned to look him in the eyes, her own green eyes flashing reptilian. 'You have the heart of a Chief and the soul of a dragon, Hiccup. Only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, son.'
But... I'm not... He thought. 'I was so afraid of becoming my dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great? That brave? That selfless? I guess you can only try.' He took a deep breath, a plan forming in the depths of his befuddled mind. 'A Chief protects his own. We're going back.'
The gang looked at him as if he was mad. 'Uh, with what?' Tuff asked.
'He took all the dragons,' Ruff pointed out.
Hiccup tried to smile. 'Not all of them.'

***

Half an hour later they were on the backs of the baby Scuttleclaws, trying, and failing, to steer them around spikes of ice.
'We can't fly these things!' Tuffnut yelled happily.
'Yeah, no kidding!' Fishlegs said before his Scuttleclaw dove head first into a snow pile.
Astrid flew up beside Hiccup, doing a remarkably good job at flying her dragon. 'Won't the Bewilderbeast just take control of these guys, too?'
'They're babies. They don't listen to anyone!'
'Yeah!' Tuffnut shouted, crashing into his sister, sending them both into Gobber. 'Just like us!'
'This is...!' Gobber began, bashing into the icy wall from his knock with the twins. '... Very dangerous!' His dragon went into the wall again, spinning around before catching up. 'So, - what is your - plan?' He asked through gaps in a row of ice spikes.
'Get Toothless back and kick Drago's—'
'Heads up!' Gobber smashed into a chunk of fallen ice while the other riders flew around it.

***

It was dawn by the time they made it Berk.
And the Alpha was there, spewing ice on an already frozen village. The dragons from Berk were circling in a mass flock above the Bewilderbeast with the Sanctuary dragon, their wings creating a cacophony of sound.
    'No...'
Hiccup guided his Scuttleclaw over to Toothless, going slowly, cautiously to his friend. Drago was still on his back, laughing as he saw the teen approaching.
'You certainly are hard to get rid of, I'll say that,' the Dragon Master said.
Hiccup ignored him, instead focusing on the Night Fury. 'Toothless? It's me, bud. I'm right here. Come back to me.'
The dragon's pupils widened slightly, before snapping back to thin lines.
'He is not yours anymore, he belongs to the Alpha! But please, oh great Dragon Master,' Drago bowed a little, grinning mockingly. 'Try to take him.'
'Please, bud. Come back to me, come back,' Hiccup placed his hand on Toothless's snout, looking into the reptile's eyes. 'Come on, bud. Come on.' The slitted pupils widened and shrank, showing the inner struggle he was having with the Alpha.
'How are you doing that?' Drago watched in amazement.
'Please,' Hiccup's voice shook. 'You are my best friend, bud.'
Toothless's eyes turned back to normal, momentarily free of the Alpha's control. The rattling sound increased in strength, throbbing on Hiccup's eardrums and taking the Fury again.
'My best friend...' Toothless shook his head and focused on his human friend, giving a gummy grin, finally free of the Alpha's command. 'Yeah!'
Drago screamed and whacked the Fury with his staff, on the second blow Toothless caught the shaft and flung him off, flapping a few times before plummeting down. Hiccup leapt down after him, catching the edge of the saddle and hooking his metal leg into the tail mechanism. They shot up and around, seeing Drago on the Alpha's head yelling for him to do something.
'We need to get those two apart,' Hiccup muttered. They swooped around and headed straight for the Dragon Master, eyes locked on their target.
    'STOP THEM!' Drago screamed.
    'NOW!' Hiccup screamed back.
Hiccup locked Toothless's tail and leapt off, gliding lower with his flightsuit. He saw Drago laughing as he watched Toothless fly up, thinking the Fury had missed, then his face froze when he saw no rider. Hiccup raced past him, trailing Zippleback gas, then ignited it with a whoosh of fire. The explosion threw the Dragon Master to the ground, his staff sticking in the ground not far away.
'Not again.' The Bewilderbeast's tail was coming up to greet him, fast. 'Toothless! It's now or never!' The spines on the Night Fury's back split and he powered up, catching Hiccup and twisting through the spikes on the huge beasts tail, somehow shooting up and off the tip of the tail. 'Yeah! We did it!' Toothless flipped over and swooshed down, skidding to a halt near Drago. Hiccup threw Inferno between the madman and his staff, almost catching his fingers in the flame.
    'It's all over now, Drago.'
Drago grinned his creepy grin, his gaze travelling to behind the teen. 'Or is it?'
Hiccup turned to see the Alpha behind him, mouth agape and ice spilling out. He ducked, covering his head with his arms, and felt Toothless press against him as the blue ice cocooned them. He gasped in the sudden lack of oxygen, sucking in the little of it that was in the air pocket under the dragon's wing. It's over, he thought. Death by ice.
A blue light filled his vision and heat penetrated his skin, making his dragon side stir. He pushed it down quickly, even on death's door he wouldn't let that side of him win out. The air became too hot to breath and shriek like that of a diving Fury wormed into his ears, making him cringe. Suddenly the ice burst apart, letting in a rush of cold air, and he looked at his Fury friend.
An electric blue colour glowed along Toothless's spine, lighting the spikes a deeper blue. He roared a challenge at the Bewilderbeast, looking back at Hiccup to make sure he was alright before leaping onto a spike of ice.
Hiccup stumbled back and looked at his mother, incredulous. 'He's challenging the Alpha!'
    'To protect you,' Valka grinned.
Toothless shot a powerful plasma blast at the Alpha, angering him into smashing the ice the Night Fury was perched on. The dragon leapt back onto another spike, firing again. The Bewilderbeast lost his concentration from the attacks, some of the dragons being freed from his control. Stormfly flew over and faced the Alpha, more dragons following when Toothless roared to them.
Drago spiked the beast's tusk with his staff and climbed up to its head, screaming at it to fight back.
'Now do you get it?' Hiccup shouted. He had mounted Toothless by this time, the dragon standing tall in front of thousands of other dragons. 'This is what it is to earn a dragon's loyalty. Let this this end now!'
    'Never!' Drago screamed.
Toothless roared to the wearle behind him, telling them to open fire. Blast after blast hit the Alpha in quick succession, making him incapable of returning fire. The Night Fury let go one, blue powerful blast and hit the Bewilderbeast's shackled left tusk. A crack sounded and the tusk broke clean through, crashing to the ground in shards of splintered ice.
Toothless shrieked earslpittingly loud, snorting at the end in finality. The former Alpha turned and dove into the sea, with Drago still on its head, waves the size of the Great Hall crashing over Berk and its people.
Cheering rose from behind them, along with roars from the freed dragons. Toothless turned and stood in the centre of the crowd, soaking up all the attention. Cloudjumper came forward and bowed, other dragons following his example, and the Fury stood proud. He roared to the sky, with a chorus of roars, rawks and squeaks joining in.
'You never cease to amaze me, bud,' Hiccup hugged the fury, feeling the rough scales under his palms. 'Thank you.'
Toothless licked him happily, slobbering saliva everywhere. 'Toothless! You know that doesn't wash out.'
The crowds dispersed, greeting their dragons joyously and chatting amongst themselves. Eret wandered up to him, looking unsure of himself but still speaking like everything was absolutely normal.
'That was some pretty fine dragon wrangling back there. You'd make a good trapper.' A Rumblehorn stomped over, nuzzling Eret's shoulder and looking at him hopefully.
'You know,' Hiccup said, smiling at the way the ex Trapper had no idea what to do. 'Skullcrusher needs someone to look after him now.'
'Me? I'd be honoured,' Eret said, patting Skullcrusher's horn.
Hiccup smiled and turned to walk over to Gothi, seeing her beckoning. In a low voice behind him he heard Eret say, 'thank you, Dragonblood.' He stiffened, but carried on walking. How does Eret know? He thought, frowning.
Hiccup knelt before the Elder, allowing her to draw the Chief's symbol on his forehead, an ovalish shape with a line down the middle, like a third eye watching. He stood and took a deep breath, turning to face the assembled crowds, the tough Vikings and their dragons.
Gobber stepped forward, spread his arms wide and announced, 'the Chief has come home!'
'Long live Chief Hiccup!' The crowds chanted. 'Long live the Chief! Long live the Chief!'
Toothless grinned at him and fired into the sky, prompting all other dragons to do the same. An impressive fireworks display ensued, fire of many colours and types bursting in the sky.
As Hiccup looked out over the villagers, his villagers, one sentence ran through his mind.
    A Chief protects his own
Even if said Chief was not what everyone thought he was.

Chapter Ten - A Dragonblood's Acceptance

Full moon.
    The night most Dragonbloods loved.
    But not this one.
Hiccup sat at his desk, a candle flickering by his elbow, and stared unseeingly at his drawing of a sleeping Night Fury. The tingling in his spine and shoulders that foreshadowed the night if the full moon was strong, almost an ache. It was nearly moonrise, he could tell by the way his inner dragon was fighting to get free, longing to fly under the stars.
With a growl Hiccup threw down his pencil and stood up, knocking his stool over. Toothless opened one eye and watched him pacing the room, his agitation obvious at a glance. The Night Fury uncurled himself and slinked up behind the Dragonblood, pushing him towards the door just as it opened.
'Errm,' Fishlegs said, seeing the cranky Chief and annoyed dragon.
'Fishlegs? What are you doing here?' The Chief asked, trying to dodge away from Toothless.
The Ingerman came into the room and shut the door behind him. 'I saw the light and was wondering if you'd forgotten to blow it out. Why are you still here? Shouldn't you...? You know.'
Hiccup sighed, rubbing his shoulder. 'I'm not Shifting again, not after... What I did. I don't think I can face that side of me again.'
Fishlegs but his hands on Hiccup's shoulders, forcing the Chief to look at him. 'It wasn't you who did it, it was the Bewilderbeast. You would never have harmed him, or anyone, that is not you, Hiccup. Who you are is...' Fishlegs let go and gestured to him.
'You just pointed to all of me.'
'Both sides of you,' Toothless said.
'What? Oh.' Wings stretched from his back, glad to be free at last. He tried to Shift back, but there was no chance now, not this close to moonrise.
'You'd better go,' Fishlegs said, pulling him to the door and looking out to make sure no one was around. He firmly pushed the Chief out and in the direction of the cove, hurrying him along with a prod in the back.
Once he was inside the treeline Hiccup ran, sprinting agilely through the forest and down into the cove, where he was confronted by greenish yellow Stormcutter eyes.
'And where have you been?' Valka asked, sitting down with her wings folded tight in.
'I, er, I got sidetracked,' Hiccup made up quickly. 'I thought I saw a new kind of dragon and...'
The Dragonblood's mother eyed him thoughtfully. 'You were going to try not to Shift, weren't you? Oh, Hiccup, it was not your fault, you must understand that. The Alpha made you do it, don't blame yourself.'
    'But..'
He swallowed, trying to clear the lump in his throat. 'But what if it happened again? What if I lost control and fired at you, or Astrid or anyone? I couldn't live with myself if...'
Valka drew him to her with a wing, folding him in a warm tent. 'The Bewilderbeast is not here now, it cannot take control. You are a dragon, Hiccup. You cannot deny that. So stop chastising yourself, fly free again, be who you are meant to be.'
As the full moon rose over the edge of the cliff, Hiccup let himself Shift to his dragon form. Skin melted away to scales, nails transformed to claws, bones became lighter and his eyesight sharpened dramatically. Under his mother's wing he let pent up tears fall, all the pain, guilt and sorrow finally finding a way out. No, he could not deny that he was a dragon at heart, no Dragonblood could. From now on, he wouldn't let what had happened stop him, he would do his father's spirit proud. He would be Chief of Berk, and make it the greatest tribe around.
From the trees above the cove, a pair of hazel brown eyes watched. The edges creased with smile lines, finally seeing the conformation that they had not been deceived.

***

In the deep ocean far to the west of Berk a massive dragon swam, its wings slicing through the water like it was soft butter. Fish darted away, most of them getting towed along behind from the slipstream. The Bewilderbeast didn't look back, having left its triumphant enemy on the Isle of Berk and his torturer writhing as a wingless Screaming Death in the sea.
The creatures pale eyes searched out an underwater cave, big enough for a Nightmare to squeeze through but only claw sized for the former Alpha. He got as close as he could to the hole on the rocky seabed, then his form shimmered and he changed, the huge dragon being replaced by a skinny, lithe human. The water pressure thrust in on him, but he paid it no mind, that being the advantage of a Bewilderbeast Dragonblood. He kicked away from the sand and swam into the cave, disappearing from view and the minds of the marine life. Leaving nothing but a splinter of tusk in the silty seabed and a faint swirling of water.

Yay! The next book!

I enjoyed all the pieces that you added to the original HTTYD2- and especially the ed! I did not see the Bewilderbeast as being dragonblood- and he was skinny, too??? Gulp- could it be???

Looking forward to book 3 since I'm sure a lot is going to be changed there :D

PS: personally I think that sometime you should make this into your own story with all your own characters. You have enough changed in the plot and characters to do so, and with just a little work it could easily stand on its own ^^

YEEEK!

Thank you! :D

Ahhhh, you'll have to wait and seeeeee.

I was thinking of doing that, Flitt (Viking Flitt, I have two versions of her) as the main. I'm writing a backstory for her anyway so I could incorporate it in.

Edit: only thing is... That backstory is set after HTTYD 2, so it would just be element of what happened in the first two.

As a future project

I was thinking you could turn this into a truly your own story- not even a fanfic or HTTYD universe. There's enough here that it wouldn't look like HTTYD- especially if you created your own fantasy world. ^^

But I know that would be a really big project and to each their own. In any case it's very creative and fun!

Can you read my mind??? O.O

I have got a fantasy world where people can turn into dragons. It's called Neveren and instead of Dragonbloods it's Darrakna (Dragonkin) I've been trying to write a story for that world for six years, and it still hasn't come about XD

Yes xD

Muahahahahaha! xD

Seriously though, this would make a great story for your own world. Just replace everything with what's in that fantastic place and add (or subtract) what you like. It might seem like cheating to use a base from a movie series or book, but there's not a story out there that hasn't been written- we writers are simply putting it in our own words.

Not a story out there... Even Multiverse Dragons? XD

*gulps* *puts colander on head*

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I've been stuck with one story for ages (that six year one) because I just couldn't think what should happen. Maybe just change a few things around... Heck, Thorn's even like Hiccup, metal leg, dragon rider, orphan (til near the end), similar age, trying to stop the bad guy who it turns out is just being controlled. That's more than I thought in common XD.

Then Thorn's brother is like Newt Scamamder, though I thought of him years before the film came out...

Hm maybe story is the wrong word xD

Ah, I understand six-year-old stories. I have some (gasp) at least ten years old. Heck, the stories I for sure intend to write are an animal series based off of the characters I created when I was little and playing with plush animals.

Something that has helped me a ton to get back into writing is doing short stories. Just getting used to a beginning, middle and end, and having those at certain points has made me realize I really can do this, I just have to stick with it. ^^

...on another note, isn't it awesome to come up with something and then see it in a movie? 8D  The one thing I always boast is that I pegged Benedict Comberbatch as an amazing Sherlock Holmes before the series began- just by seeing him once in the movie Amazing Grace xD

That's so cool you basically had Newt as a character before he existed

Further realization

Hang on....Dragon was a Dragonblood too...so does that mean he is now literally a wingless Screaming Death, and that wasn't just a descriptive sentence?

Unnecessary explanation

Just wanted to explain this for some reason...

Hiccup Shifted to hybrid form when he faced Drago the first time because he was trying to provoke Drago into Shifting to hybrid form so he could see what dragon he was, but... Drago was already in hybrid form. The wings were the only thing that would give it away, and because he didn't have any wings Hiccup couldn't tell.

There, now you have some useless knowledge XD
