Fright of Passage ( Episode 6)
So, what did you think of Fright of Passage? I though it was a awesome episode and I really liked the Flightmare and how the algae made the dragons glow. What are your thoughts?
I did like it, but I was expecting them to go meet Fearless Finn Hofferson to talk about it all and do some research, that way we would know more about Hoffersons and the Flightmare.
I enjoyed the parts with the twins and Snptlout the most tho! xDDD

i agree this was supposed to be a astrid based episode, i feel like it didn't quite focus on her like it did on snotlout in the previous one
well i have alot to say
first of i am very confused/dissapointed, they made a book right? but in the series fishlegs finds random information on the dragons that wasn't mentioned in the book of dragons. they just make stuff up so it would fit in the series.
and i don't know who posted this but i found someone who posted something like this on berks grapevine:
Its how to train your dragon not how to make enemies with dragons, i mean every single dragon that came to berk has become an enemy, hiccup didn't even bother to train any of them(changewing, scaouldron, typhoomerang,.....) i don't mean the screaming death or any leathal dragon like that. but think about it here is how an episode goes: a species is introduced,a problem occurs, they battle the dragon and it dissapears forever. hope somebody agrees with me.
and it was weird that they only disscovered the algae in this episode, shouldn't they know berk by now?
the beggining was good the way they introduced astrid as a child, i know dreamworks is pretty busy whith httyd 2 and all but the start of a new season is great the first 4 episodes are fantastic but its all down hill from there :(
and hiccup had a clear shot at training a typhoomerang. he knows were changewing island is why don't you go and train one? and as far as i am conserend the fireworm queen looks very nice and friendly.
see alvin at least tried:
I agree- perphaps Hiccup shouldn't go train Changewings on the Changewing island but at least do something when they attack. To be fair I think he shows no respect for any of these dragons. Perphaps if he had tried to tame it they would have found a good way of using it- but no! He didn't even try!
But probably my favorite thing was the character development we got for Astrid. It's always bugged me that she seems to be overcompensating for something, and it's not just being a girl because all the women in the Viking culture seem just as tough as the men. It was a relief to see exactly why she carries such a heavy chip on her shoulder - her family's reputation was ruined by a misunderstanding. No wonder she's got something to prove! Let's see... We've had character development for Hiccup, Astrid, the Thorston twins and Snotlout - I do believe it's Fishlegs' turn! XD
Edit: Wow, am I the only one that liked Astrid's side of things here? I thought it was implied that the Flightmare killed Fearless Finn Hofferson, which is why he was disgraced as a coward - people saw him freeze up, assuming it was fear, and figured that's what cost him his life. I mean, the paralysis itself is only temporary, and Astrid wouldn't have been so traumatized if her uncle got away and was still around...
And to be fair, if the Flightmare only comes by once a decade, protecting the town from it doesn't leave too much time to study and train it... I could see how the Changewings were a missed opportunity, but what other trainable dragons have attacked? The Smothering Smokebreaths and Fireworms aren't really practical because of their communal/hive mentality and small size, the Screaming Death obviously wasn't going to happen, they DID train a Thunderdrum, and Hiccup had tried unsuccessfully to train a more mellow adult Whispering Death - forget the volatile juveniles! Typhoomerangs are obviously trainable, but where would you house something that big and intrinsically destructive?
Almost finished ranting... Lastly, if they train a new dragon, who will ride it? It should obviously be a main character, but we're running out of those. Gobber's probably next in line for a dragon, Alvin already has one, Dagur doesn't seem too interested at the moment. It'd just be weird to give a new and rare dragon to someone like Spitelout or (Odin forbid) Mildew. You have to try and understand the dilemmas the writers are in...
Ok, I'm done...
THANK YOU!
Seriously, guys. I thought it was descretely implied that Fin had died as well, hence why nobody knew that he'd been temporarily paralyzed instead of frozen with fear. It's a kid's show, so they kinda can't go into too heavy of details or talk about his death. Astrid's sensativity toward the subject matter says a lot too. Astrid/Fishlegs confusion as it happened to them kinda hints at that well.
And yeah, I'm kinda glad they're showing more of Astrid's backstory. She's competitive for a good reason!
In regards to the Flightmare only coming once a year, I also agree with this point. They probably did try to figure out why it kept coming to Berk (especially on the same route), but the glowing algea wasn't there for them to make that sort of connection. They also didn't know that consuming said algea made you glow until Hiccup and Astrid witnessed the effects on Toothless. So, even if they had potentially seen the algea before, they wouldn't have realized it was the Flightmare's source of food because they wouldn't know that that's where its glow comes from.
As for the "not training dragons/making dragons our enemies" bit, I disagree. Like Josh said, it'd be senseless to give a random NPC a powerful, rare dragon such as a Changewing. They're low on characters without dragons and (once again, as Josh pointed out) giving one to Dagur or Mildew is just imbecilic. Hiccup was unable to train a Whispering Death despite trying, but nobody's getting onto anybody's case over that that I'm seeing. The Changewings were destroying Berk, so I can understand wanting to get them out of town sooner rather than later, especially when there were so many and they'd figured out how to get them to leave without causing a huge fight. In regards to the Typhoonmerang, they didn't really get into a big skuffle with the mother. She just wanted her baby back and the kids understood that enough to return her lost child before things got way out of hand. And I for one believe the Screaming Death is entirely untrainable.
I don't think Fishlegs is pulling random facts out of thin air for plot purposes either. There are more sources of dragon information than just the book of dragons after all. Gobber clearly knows more than the book lists from years of fighting them; case in point, the whole thing about Scaldrons not being venomous.
Honestly, the whole bits with Snotlout and the twins were kinda randomt o me. Yes, they were hilarious, but I also think they were kind of pointless. They took a little away at what was significantly more important; i.e. defending the town. Snotlout's, the twins, and even Fishlegs centered episodes didn't take away from their screen-time to show what other charactes were doing, so why should Astrid's? It just seems unnecessary to me.
Sorry if I'm a bit biased/touchy. Astrid is quite possibly my favorite character and I have little patience for people censored on her as it is.
Wow! You both got a point there. We shouldn't complained so much about Hiccup training the dragon or not. This season is all about them trying to DEFEND Berk. Hence, Defenders Of Berk. I honestly think that the writers did their job well although there's some unnecessary part like you guys said. HTTYD 2 or 3 might show something like this as well, I mean more on the Dragon fight, maybe. I think Hiccup did his best to train and study the dragon at this time. He needs to prepare for Alvin's way with his dragon.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I do agree that it is called "DEFENDERS of Berk" for a good reason. "Riders of Berk" was about training and learning about the dragons. If they were still doing that, we'd still be in season one. The series has to progress at some point after all.
Thank you.
Thank You.
THANK YOU.
Thank you both.
I just now saw the ep online, and then read this thread, and I was like... what? What in the name of Thor are you people complaining about? If anything, I agree that the only thing to complain about was the bi with Snotlout and the Twins. It was pointless, and wouldn't it be more in charater for Snotlout to just punch Tuffnut and walk in? Seriously.
I basically agree with everything Josh and Mud said.
And thank you to you too, Shadow. I do agree that Snotlout could (and probably should have) just punched Tuffnut and been on his marry way. Can't see him hitting Ruffnut, but Tuffnut is fair game. On top of that, while the twins are mischievous and pants-on-head-special, that kind of plan seems WAY too thought out for them.
I guess I'm just annoyed because instead of using those precious minutes to elaborate more on the Flightmare and what's going on, they instead choose to show what the rest of the group is doing. They hardly did that at all in the Iron Gronckle, yet it took up a little less than half of the episode to show what the twins and 'Lout were up to in Fright of Passage. On top of that, what those three were up to had nothing to do what Astrid, Hiccup, and Fishlegs were doing. It was just silly filler. I won't deny that I was laughing at the mindless antics, but still...
i'm waiting for Worst In Show i think it will be awesome and this episode not so great i mean i thought they will meet fearless finn haffirson but they didn't and it's not so great
I liked the episode!
The Flightmare looks very beautiful and mystical (in my opinion!).
Yes, it was a really nice episode, can´t wait for the next episode :P

Also, in completely unrelated notes to my above rant(s), Stormfly glowing looks like a fluorescent lightbulb.
... And now I want one on my desk.
And I'm partcially disturbed by the idea that Fishlegs wants to knit Meatlug a blanket to match her bizarre color. Glowing Toothless also looked really freaky in the face if you asked me.
Glowing Stormfly for a table lamp would be cool.
I loved this episode! espeshly when the dragons glowed...because of that I have glowing silouets of toothless ,stormfly and a terabule terror. I might add more but for now jest thouse three. the only thing I didn`t like in this episode is the twins...thay should of let snotlout in at the very start, insted of adding things to the list of thing he had to get for them.the flightmere it`s self is really amazeing even I didn`t know that the glowing algey was what gave the flightmere its eaire glow.
that`s my take on the episode review.
