Forum Suggestion: Lock the entire Announcement area

Since the Forum is going to be revamped (or at least, implied), might as well bring out a suggestion that's been pointed out a few times before. Every month, it's guaranteed to have folks wrongly post random, out of topic posts in Announcements, which on it's own, is a category for official-only, SoD related announcements. But, for some reason, a lot of users don't bother to change the Forum part after the Subject box when creating a new thread because, guess what? The default option is always General Announcements unless you are already in a sub-category.

 

This is genuinely annoying for things like research for a minigame's history because the search isn't the best thing as it will gather ALL posts containing what you wrote, so you have to manually flip through hundreds and hundreds of pages until you finally get the information you are looking for. I remember the numerous of times when I was searching for announcements regarding specific changes for the SoD Wiki, I would get tired not from writing or researching, but yes, constantly finding posts like "What's your favorite Dragon" in General Announcements, which is home to literally most of the major official announcements.

 

So, I implore you and suggest you to please lock the entire Announcements section and make it Admin-only, this includes General Announcements, New Features, and Latest Support Update. Normal users should not be allowed to post whatever they want in what is supposedly an area to make official announcements about the game. It will help both the Admins keeping that area tidy and clean, and normal users from being belittered (with reason) for posting in the wrong sub-category.

I'm only in the game mainly for Wikia purposes. I only turn MMO on during battles but don't bother talk with me as I never use the chat as a form of communication. I have trained all the Dragons Species but the Thunderpede and the Scuttleclaw are my biggest favorite - my Dragon List is currently a WIP.

This always irked me as well, so I nudged Brynjolf about it. It should be fixed soon, but if not, let me know and I'll push some more buttons until it's fixed. It'll take some time, but I'll try to move the rest of the non-admin posts out of the announcement section and into the general section as time permits.

Hi Goony! I hope you see this because I wanted to let you know about an issue I discovered with "General Announcements", "New Features", and "Latest Support Updates" being locked. Because these subforums are locked now we can't comment on any of the threads that the admins post in those sections. I discovered this because no one has commented on Brynjolf's post about the Tutorial Bug Fix which I thought was kind of odd. I expected at least a few comments of "Thanks!" or something like that. That's when I suspected that we may not be able to comment on admin posted threads now because we can't comment on the threads in the "Support" section which is also locked. To test my theory I tried to comment on Brynjolf's thread and when I clicked the "Reply" button I was taken back to the homepage of the forum. Not being able to post on admin threads posted in "General Announcements", "New Features", and "Latest Support Updates" could present an issue. In the past we've given feedback and such on admin announcement threads as well as asked questions and stuff like that. Do you think there's any way that commenting on admin threads posted in those subforums could be allowed again while at the same time keeping it where random users can't post threads in those sections?

BIG support!

So many people just refuse to read the names or descriptions of subforums and just plop threads down wherever. Since General Announcements is all the way on the top of the page, I assume people just click it because it's the first thing they see, and since it's already filled with a bunch of off-topic threads they don't see an issue with making another, like a silly cycle of 'spam'.

 

I tried to not interact with those offtopic threads hoping others would also ignore them so they would drop off to page two at least, but people reply to them anyways, keeping those threads on top by bumping them constantly.

 

I do think stuff would look much more neat if only admins could post in the announcement subforums.

I half-support this.

 

Yes, it is annoying to find random posts. BUT, making general announcements admin only, that may be a bit of a hinderence if you have spotted something in-game and want to announce it, or if they posted something on their social media, and they haven't posted it on the forums (like some of the 'this event is coming' type of thing), so instead maybe they should put the titles into use (instead of only jarl having the most significance with the 2 line signature limit) and make it 'Supreme Viking Champion' only. That way, only experienced people will be able to post in it, meaning they will know how to use the forums (hopefully).

 

But, again, I support this.

There's already a lot of subforums for forumers to post their "announcements" in. From general for new SoD content they've noticed, to great hall where'd they announce leaving the forum or such.

 

Forumers with supreme viking champion titles shouldn't have special rights either. I've seen a few of them still posting in general announcements, some breaking forum ettiquete and some earning that title from just spamming replies and threads. 

 

Best to reserve the announcement section for mods and admins, where threads about updates and everything else they're working on is a priority to be seen by all.

"making general announcements admin only, that may be a bit of a hinderence if you have spotted something in-game and want to announce it", how would it hinder users from posting unofficial, user-made announcements when there's literally a sub-category exactly for that and in-game discussions called General Discussion? I don't recall normal users needing a sub-category specifically to announce anything that was released in the game, they always used the General Discussion for it, and the entire Announcements area was for Admin-only.

 

And no please no, no Rank-exclusive categories. That would increase the amount of spam-like threads just to get the rank and be able to off-topic post in a "special" sub-category. Saying that Supreme Viking Champions are "experienced users" is like calling "experienced" to those who spam-posted just for the Rank.

 

And I just realized there's a Website Suggestion sub-category, I have became my own enemy.

Mmm but the 'announcements' from members are the entire issue to begin with. People 'announcing' that they saw something in the game, sharing/relaying social media posts are not announcements, announcing their newest dragon etc. It doesn't belong there.

 

I don't think we should hide the ability to post behind ranks as that goes against the entire purpose of a discussion forum. Not to mention that the ranks mean nothing. All I've seen them do is make people more spammy because they want the shiny new title.
