Hope you guys are doing well.

This new chapter has something in it that I have been waiting for quite a while to introduce into the story.  But I could not do it until something else happened in the Race to the Edge Timeline.  For reference, this chapter is happening at the same time as the beginning of Night of the Hunters, Part 2 from Season 2.

As always, I hope you guys enjoy the chapter and please comment what you think of my new addition(s).  << Because there really is more than one, so can you guess what exactly have I been wanting to add for a while?

Almost have a hold of my schedule to update titles & do drawings

We arrived back at Mystery within the hour.  There are still several hours left of daylight, but the rest of the day would be spent only in rest and recuperating.

On arrival, back we stabled our dragons and gave a well-deserved rest.  My friends kept bugging me about why we “just happened” to be in the vicinity of that island.  They all thought was not just a, “In the place at the right time.”  Even though timing was still apart of catching those Dragon Hunters on the island, making it look like it was unintended when I well knew it was intended.  This is what my friends are upset about.  If I were in their shoes, I would be upset too.  Not knowing they were going to be in a battle and coming unprepared can be very dangerous.  It also begs mistakes to be made.  But, this is why before we left Mystery I made sure everybody was prepared for anything.

The thing with friends that I often get on my soapbox about is trust.  Then to do what I did with my friends about not telling them, was distrusting them.  From their point of view, however.  Once I tell them why I did not tell them, I -think- they will understand.

They all started to question me at the same time right as we were finishing up with feeding our dragons, until I finally directly answered them, “Okay!” Sighing, I then brought my tone down, “I will tell you all once we’re done here and go up to the Clubhouse.”

That quieted them down some.  The last dragons we need to take care of are Sirena and Skybolt.  Sirena, of course, is Annabeth’s nearly broad-wing Deathsong and Skybolt is Cazi’s short-wing Skrill she is helping raising since his birth.

I led the group up to the Clubhouse.  Being the first up to the door, I held it open for everyone to go in before I did.  Closing the door behind me, I entered as well.

Now looking at my friends you would think this is the first time we have ever met, the way they looked back at me.

Not wasting anytime, I started, “Alright, I know what you are probably all thinking, but there is more to this than you know.  The answer is, ‘Yes, I did know.’  How did I know?  Annabeth.  When we woke up to that lightning bolt and then trying to stop the fires, something else happened.  As I was getting Fredrick, out of the corner of my eye I spotted a dark figure dash towards the forest.  To be frank, I thought it was Dawn trying to pull something.  So, I went out after them.  After a good chase, cutting of their route, and tackling the figure, I find that the figure is Annabeth.  Long story short, Annabeth is the one that told me about the Dragon Hunters and where they would be.  She told me it would be best to keep this a secret from you guys.  Why?  Because if one of you knew where the tip-off came from, it would put Annabeth’s cover in jeopardy.  Not only that, but it would put Annabeth in danger.  She knows I always tell the truth in every situation and didn’t really like to put me in this position.  However, this was a pretty important raid for us.  Obviously, the most important thing was rescuing those dragons.  Secondly, thwarting their plan and doing as much damaging to the Dragon Hunters as possible.  Thirdly, was getting the formula for Gronckle Iron.  With that in our possession, we can finally make the weapons and tools we have wanted.  Having this formula is a great addition and boost on our side.”

“Now,” I finished up.  “All that I told you before we left was all true.  I will never lie to you, or anybody else for that matter, for no good reason.  The truth is always the best way to go.  I will do all I can to avoid lying.  If it means having my friends mistrust me for a while, that is fine.  As long as everyone involved is safe and unharmed, that is what I am going for.”

For a minute, no one said anything; they just thought.

I then smiled, to lighten things up, and said, “Because if you guys aren’t safe and something happened, then I won’t have any friends around to do anything.  If something like that ever happened… I would never speak to you guys again.”

Queue the facepalms.  Cazi was the first to do so.  Then came the shake of the heads and the hands-on-hips for the girls.

“Okay,” Asvord declared.  “Now that we roasted my brother, how ‘bout we roast some yak meat for supper?”

“Ooo, sounds good,” several people said.

The usual suspects went with Asvord to help prepare and cook supper: Ali, Angie, and Meen.  I think Asvord has in her mind to do a roast.  So, Meen’s pans are perfect for that.  Please note that Meen always washes her pans thoroughly before cooking when used after a battle.

The meal was ready in about twenty minutes and eaten in half the time.  The usual side dishes were also served.  Although we eat a lot of the same things all the time, at least for me and my sisters, it takes a while for us to get tired of anything related to food.  Mother sharing some of her tips and tricks to make the same meal or ingredients taste different each time.  Even though we may get the same types of food to begin with, the meal itself is good every time.

Throughout the meal, I could see Dawn was not having a pleasant time at the dinner table.  She kept eating with her right hand, never bringing her left hand up to do anything.  At first I thought it was the food was grimacing about, but she kept eating it.  Then maybe it was Michia sitting next to her, but they left each other alone.  But when Dawn started to stand up from the dinner table, she grimaced quite a bit.  Now, I have sinking suspicion what it could be.

“Dawn, are you alright?” I asked

Everyone else had taken their plate to the sink and wash bowl to be cleaned, so Dawn and I were the last to get up from the table.

Dawn quickly replied and sounded like her words were forced out, “I’m fine.”

When she stood up, I saw that her left hand is plastered up against her left side.

“Then why do you have you hand there?” I questioned while walking over to Dawn.

She flung both her arms back at me in irritations, “I’m fine, okay?!”

Figuring she would remove her hand from her side if I confronted her further like I just did, I caught a glimpse of what she is trying to hide, “You are bleeding!”

“I said, ‘I’m fine!’” she declared.

“No, you are not,” I returned.

Some of the others returned and Cazi was the first to ask, “Okay, what’s all the racket going on back here?”

“This nincompoop thinks I have an injury,” Dawn replied.

I immediately rebutted, “I never said injury.  There is something wrong.”

I went up to Dawn to try and get her let me look at her, “Leave me alone!” she said.  “I’m fine.”

“I’ll be the judge of that,” I replied.  “If there’s nothing wrong then this will only take a second.”

“It’s been a second,” Dawn stated.

“You know what I meant,” I corrected.

         “Fine,” she relinquished to me.

I lead her to a nearby couch and made her lay down.  After she did so, I knelt down on both knees and I moved her left hand to see a large red stain on her shirt as big as her hand.  When I grabbed for the bottom of her shirt with my right-hand Dawn grabbed for my hand.

“I just want to look at this area,” I assured.

Now with Dawn laying down, she looked in a visible amount of pain.  As I pulled back the shirt, Dawn started squirm and grunt a little bit.  What I revealed is that of an injury Dawn mentioned.  But not just any injury, a wound from a sword or spear!

The wound itself is about three to four inches long, half inch wide.

“How long have you had this?” I quickly asked and gently put the shirt back over the wound.

“I did it before we left your Mystery,” Dawn quipped.  “Where do you think, I got it?”

“Why did you wait so long to call attention to yourself, for use to help you?  Asvord!” I called for.

My sister rushed over and looked at the wound herself, “We need to take care of this, right now.”

         “No kidding,” Dawn said.

Michia folded his arms, “First she wanted to hide it.  Now, she wants us to take care of it.”

I looked at him, “Not helping.”

“Sorry,” Michia’s look after he said it was that of regret of saying it the way he did.

“Dawn is starting to drift off,” I replied.

“Hurry,” Asvord responded.  “Take her to my room.  I’ll take care of it.”

“Wake up Dawn,” I said, taking her left arm and putting it over my head.  Dawn stirred, stood up with my help, and looked more alert as I called to someone else, “Come on, Michia, grab her right arm.”

Without saying a word, he quickly came over and took Dawn’s other arm.  Both of us led Dawn into Asvord’s room and gently laid her down onto the table.  While we did so, Asvord briskly prepared the necessary items needed for the medicine.  Cazi and Ashley followed Asvord in when she brought the medicine over.

“We’ll take care of her, boys,” Asvord said to me and Michia.  “Just wait an we’ll let you know.”

While Dawn was being taken care, not a word was spoken.  We all simply waited until news was reported.  After about twenty minutes to a half hour, Asvord, Cazi, and Ashley came out of the room.  No one had left the Clubhouse when they heard and came to see Dawn in pain as Michia and I walked Dawn into Asvord’s room.

Before any of us could ask how Dawn was doing, Ashley replied, “Dawn is resting.  Thanks to your sister, Dawn will be fine.”

Asvord walked over to the right side of the Clubhouse and plopped down into a chair.  Her head was only halfway up the back seat, so, she slouched in the chair.

Asvord sighed, “I don’t get that girl.  One minute she’s in pain and wants to be helped.  The next she wants us to go away.  Finally… she was in enough pain she just gave into us.  Once I was able to work freely, it hardly took any time at all to clean the wound, treat it, bandage it, and then rebandage it before coming out just now.  She’ll be fine, as long as she rests.”

We all gave some sighs of relief.

“Okay, no let’s get some work done,” I suggested.

         Elsa asked, “What work?”

“I’m glad you asked because I need you and your dragon,” I said.

“Oh, yeah,” Elsa replied.  “For Gronckle Iron, you need a Gronckle.”

“Could you work with Garth and start a stockpile of Gronckle Iron?” I asked.  “It doesn’t have to be a whole lot, just a start.  I know a few of us what to have some new weapons made out of this iron and maybe a few saddles.  Cazi can supply you with the formula as well as a more exact order of what we all want so you have a better idea of how much to make.”

With that those three went off.  Garth looked to be very excited… finally, something new to do around here; other than a mystery.

“The rest of you are free to do whatever,” I said.  “Until Hiccup’s report, we can’t move any further on our mystery.  So, you have some rare free time.”

Meen quipped, “Free time?  What is this free time you speak of?”

Asvord retorted, “Free time is where you are not busy with anything else or have to work on anything.  Or it is when Jarl can’t do anything with a mystery and we’re all going to be bored for a while.  I think we all know it will be the latter for the majority of us.  We also get involved with Jarl’s mysteries that when we aren’t working together with him on one, we don’t really know what to do either.”

All my friend dispersed to go about whatever they are going to do.  Asvord and I ended up being the only ones left in the Clubhouse.  My older sister told me she is going to keep an eye on Dawn and make sure she stays in bed and rests.

I went to my room and start doing some work on a new tool I have been thinking about, but have not had the time to work on it yet.  Garth has helped me make some of the parts while I created the rest.  All I was missing now was the Gronckle Iron element.  Now that we have that, nothing is stopping me now that I have some free time.

Spending the next several hours working on the tool and going back and forth between my room in the Clubhouse and the Foundry, I finally finished my invention.  I wanted to do a real-life test after testing my invention out in my room.  So, I invited everyone to the top of the East Ridge and stopped at the edge of the cliff, right before the bridge to the northern half of the island.  By now, Dawn had rested the whole time and was tired of resting.  She wanted to come up too, but we made sure she did anything but just walking slow to the overhang.  I did, although, go to the stables and bring with me Fredrick.  I told everyone that Fredrick was the only dragon needed for the demonstration.

Cazi put a question to me as we walked up the paths, “What are you hiding under that long glove on your right hand?”

“You’ll see,” I smiled and replied.  “That’s what I am going to show you.”

When we reached the ridge, the sun was just now starting to set.  Also, a dragon could be seen flying in from the east.  It is Annabeth and Anora.  As both of them landed, everyone greeted and welcome her back.  Annabeth went right into an apology to everyone and to me about not wanting to tell them about the Dragon Hunters.

“I’m sorry, Jarl,” Annabeth said.  “It was unfair of me to put you in a position like that, but at the time it felt like the right thing to do.”

“That is all any of us can do,” I answered.  “All we can do at any given time is do what we think is the right thing to do.  Once it is done, we can look at what we could have done better and what we did good, so the next time it can be better.”

Just then we all heard a, “Meow.”

“Did you bring Jewels with you, Jarl?” asked Asvord.

“No,” I replied.  “You know we can never find that cat when we want to.  She is the ‘Queen’ of the island, remember?”

Annabeth chuckled, “Well, I think Titan may have a word with Jewels about that.”

         “Titan?” echoed Cazi.  “Whose Titan?”

Annabeth walked back over to her saddlebag on the right side of her dragon, reached into the bad, and pulled out a cat!

I asked astounded but also thrilled, “Where did you find another cat?”

“I did not find it,” Annabeth responded.  “Titan found me.”

Asvord pointed out, “Looks a little bigger than Jewels and has more prominent ears as well as a slightly longer tail.  And why are we wearing a different outfit?  I like the black though.”

“I’ll tell you guys later the story of how I got her and about the outfit,” Annabeth said.  “But what are you guys all doing out here?”

Dawn replied, “Ask Jarl over there, he’s the one that dragged us out up here.”

“Oh, Annabeth,” I said and then introduced by pointing them out.  “This is Dawn and that is Michia.  How they got here is a story of itself, but they will be staying with us for a while.”

Annabeth and the other two exchanged greetings.  By what we expected, Dawn acted her normal, “Yeah, hi, whatever,” kind of attitude.

“Well, Jarl,” Annabeth asked.  “What are we doing out here?  What are you doing to do?”
         “Meh,” I said trying to
down play what I was about to say.  “Nothing too big.  I’m going to jump off this cliff.”

         “Oh, okay,” answered Annabeth.

There was a split second of silence as everyone did not hear what I just said.  When their realization of what I just said struck them as hard as a Snoggletog snowstorm would, they protested.  Asvord and Elsa were among the loudest, but none more than Annabeth and pleading that I am not serious.

“But I am serious,” I could not help but grin.

Asvord started to pace a couple times before saying, “Oh, oh.  I knew this day would come.  I knew it would come.  Jarl has finally gone off the deep end.”

“I haven’t gone off the deep end,” I corrected.  “But I am about to do so.”

I then got bombarded with questions, accusations, and pleading statements not to follow through with this.

“Now hold on just a button flickin’ minute,” I raised and lowered my arms fast to get out of the hold of Annabeth, Asvord, and Elsa.  “Instead of me explaining until the sun goes down, could you guys please just be quiet and give me a chance to explain by showing you guys.”

After that I took off the glove on my right hand and revealed my invention.

         Everyone, “Ooo’ed,” and “Ahh’ed.”

“Okay, now get him!” Asvord cried.

“I said, ‘Hold on!’” I demanded.  “Everything will make sense in due time, just give me a chance, for flying out loud.”

The device is attached to my bracer.  Turning my arm over I let them inspect the device.

Annabeth concluded, “Looks like a mini crossbow.”

         “Indeed, it is,” I confirmed.

“Okay, now that we know what it is… get back from that cliff!” Annabeth stated firmly.

In a sarcastic tone, I threatened, “Now if you guys don’t stop this, I will jump off this cliff!”

They stopped… but I ran ahead and jumped off anyway!

Everyone called out or screamed, “Don’t!”

As I fell through the air, with style of course, I took a diagonal direction to the bridge, going left to right.  I kept my body under control, and dove down like I am diving into a pool of water.  I actually will be, if this does not work, for there below me is the river that cuts this part of the island making the East and West Ridges from the North and South parts of the island.

The moment they thought I went insane by jumping off the cliff and free fall downward.  Not more than a second later did I turn my body in mid-air to face upwards, raised my right arm, and quickly tapped a button on my bracer.  What followed silenced the screams and shouts from the cliff above…

A projectile shot forth from my bracer and lodged into the middle of the East Ridge bridge.  Attached to the projectile is a small chain of Gronckle Iron which is attached to my bracer.  A second later, I hit a second button on my bracer which in turn caused the Gronckle Iron chain to stop feeding more chain out of the device.  The very next moment before I reached the tug of the chain, I reached up and grabbed with both of my hands the chain itself.  When the tension in the chain became taught, the chain itself turned into a giant swinging pendulum with me at the end of it.  I turned again to face forward and brought my legs forward, to keep my momentum going upward.  As I swung upward, I used my legs to maneuver myself to end up over the edge of the bridge and Northside of the island.  My momentum carried me up to a point where I then started to come back down.  But by then I am over the bridge.  As I landed, even though I had slowed down nearly completely when I came over the bridge, my legs buckled under me and I fell backwards onto the ground right at the entrance of the bridge.

Standing up and dusting off imaginary dirt, as it had just rained so actually it was mud, off my pants, I stood up and looked back at a crowd of friends standing stunned.  To be frank, I am too a little bit.

“Hook, line, and bingo it worked!” I thought, “Okay, I just jumped off a cliff, put my life on the line with a device I had only just practice to make sure the projectile could securely attach to wood as well as rock, and swung across a fifty-yard expanse to the other side of the East Ridge, but on the Northern side of the island.  Introduce your new invention.”

I called out to my friends on the other side, “I call it a… Grappling Hook!”

On the Subject of Hackers

please read this link, it helps to identify the different types of hackers. I have hacked computers, and servers in the past (despite not being the best at code) but I never do it for personal gain. Unfortunately the hackers most people refer to on the internet are crackers so they bring a bad light on the hacking community in general. I only learned to hack code because I needed to in order to hack my microwave and other software in my house.

Don't be a Cracker you ruin it for everyone!

There might be a few more surprises along the way.

Those are some good ideas, I'll keep those in mind, thanks.
