Chapter 15

Taking Sleuthing to a New Level... Or Depth in this Case

“Berserker ships,” declared Asvord.  “Great.  You planned for this… right?”

“Well, I had hoped it wouldn’t have happened,” I replied putting the spyglass back in my bag and reached into my left, inside tunic pocket; I pulled out a notebook.  I always keep a notebook in my tunic.  Never know when one will need paper to draw, or notes to write in this case.

Annabeth asked, “What’s that for?” as I began to write.

“Even though I hoped it wouldn’t happen,” I answered.  “Doesn’t mean I didn’t think of it.  With Hiccup sighting Dagur at the real Ship Graveyard a few more hours ride slightly north by east and us seeing the Berserker ships scouting this other ship graveyard, the probability of us meeting more Berserkers is as good as Astrid never ever marrying Snotlout.”

Cazi nodded, “When you put it that way, then it figures we would meet them here.”  Cazi then pounded her right fist into her hand, “I’m in a mood… a mood where I need to hit something… something that might hit back.  Good thing you had us bring our weapons.”

“Yeah,” Meen agreed, and then patted her pans on her hook holsters on her left and right sides.  “Me pans were getting tired of banging eggs on their sides to make scrambled eggs.  Now we get to bang some heads and make some scrambled noodle noggins.”

Everyone laughed.  I finished my note, tore off the page, rolled it up, and tied it to Smoky, sending him on his way back to Berk.

Garth then stated, “This is going to make recovering that artifact that much more difficult.”

          “I know,” I said.

Garth then suggested, “We need to regroup and figure out a strategy.  This underwater saddle is affective, yet rather heavy.  We have the plan on how to get the artifact, but we need another for the Berserkers on how to deal with them.  Riptide is quite strong and has the endurance, yet she is not used to lugging this thing around yet.  So she will tire out, eventually.  And to not leave anything to chance, we will need to fly in directly to our target and be in position to submerge all in one fail swoop.”

“Just leave buzz-brains to me,” Cazi said pointing with her thumb at herself.  “I can think of a few others in this group who are dying to get part of the action.  We could create a distraction, keeping them busy and occupied; while you and I’m assuming Jarl retrieve the artifact.”

“Okay,” I decided.  “We passed a sea stack not too far back.  Let’s go back there, regroup, eat lunch, and devise a new plan.”

The sea stack is slightly north of our position and back a couple miles.  Flying back there, we landed and set up a mini-camp.  I announced to the others that we should go ahead and eat lunch, even though it is slightly early for it, we will need all the strength we have to pull this off.

Giving Fredrick some of the salmon packed in my one saddlebag and eating the food packed for me, an apple and some dried yak meat sandwich with cabbage, I figured out a new plan or a revised plan of the old plan which I planned beforehand which I planned in the plan for the planning to not go as planned for a change of plans but also for the new plan to be a success… or that is what I am planning.

The part of the plan of retrieving the artifact remains the same: Garth and I will use his new invention to takes down into the depths of the ocean.  When we find the ship my father and I were in, we, Garth and I, go in using the hole Fredrick made our, my father’s and my escape.  Working our way through the ship to the captain’s quarters, we search for the artifact, find it, and get out of there.

I always like thinking of the different scenarios that could play out with any given situation, so I have already thought about Berserker or any other enemy ships and soldiers being there.  Here is how this new part of the plan will work: While Garth and I go after the artifact, the others do in fact create a distraction.  However, a couple people go in first for recon to see if they can learn anything.  If they get made by someone spotting them, then the diversion will commence.  The Berserkers will think that the information about what they are doing is the reason why we came.

Once lunch was over I relayed both parts of the plan to everyone.  Ali, Hyrith, and Meen will be the group to go in for recon.  Hyrith suggested that they split up and come in from three sides, each taking a different ship to see if they learn something different or extra.  With that suggestion, those three would do just that.  Cazi, Annabeth, Explode, Angie, Asvord, and Elsa would fly up to the edge of the ship graveyard with the recon group, but would lie in wait behind one of the wrecked ships just on the outskirts of the ship wreck area.

Everybody agreed to the plan and ready for their part.  I noticed that Annabeth had barely spoken a word and still looked like she is the outsider in the group.  Cazi gave me that look again, but her the look of, “It will be alright,” and a subtle hand motion which is usually done to shown with that statement; flat palms, slightly out, and a quick up and down motion.

Before we left the sea stack, I went over to Garth to have him inform me on how his saddle will work.

Garth started his explanation, showing me each part as he spoke, “I invented the design so Riptide and I could explore the seas together.  The saddle consists of four barrels of compressed air with two on each side of the saddle with tubes to a wooden mask made of wood from Loki Island; the same wood Stoick wanted to use for his ship in the Ragatta back when Hiccup and the gang developed the idea of Dragon Racing.  The mask has glass lenses, a head strap, and three valves: A snorkel pump valve by the mouth to let out the air we expel through our noses, a butterfly valve on the tube to regulate air coming from the tanks, and a ball valve on the left side of the mask to allow for breathing while in the air.  I had to redesign and reconnect a few things to allow for a second person to use a mask to breathe; one reason why we need to do this rather quickly as the air supply just got halved as each mask is connected to two of the tanks, one on each side.  Not knowing the exact amount of time we have in each tank, because that depends on how much compressed air I’m able to get in each tank, but I wouldn’t want to be underwater for more than a half hour.”

“So what you are saying,” I said.  “Is look fast.  Good thing I know where to look.”

“Yeah,” Garth replied.  “Oh, one more thing, be sure you breathe out of your mouth and not your nose.  Also, keep your breathing in regular breaths.  The masks are designed to allow for normal breathing.  If you start panicking or hyperventilating, you could choke yourself with the air you’re trying to breath; another reason to breathe through your mouth.”

My eye brows shot up and my heart skipped a beat, “So I could hidefrom this, but that’s as bad as it could get.”
“Precisely,” Garth smiled.  “You’ll be fine.  Just before we submerge, we’ll do some practice breaths to get a rhythm down and then go under.”

I replied, “Sounds good.”  Then calling for everyone’s attention, “So, does everybody know their part of the plan?”

Everybody said, “Yes,” or “Yep,” or something along those lines.  With that being said, I told everybody to mount up.  I flew on my dragon for the time being, but right before we got there I would transfer to Riptide.  Since Fredrick is a Tidal Class dragon being a Thunderdrum, he could follow Garth, Riptide and I down into the seas below.

We flew in a tight arrow formation with me in the lead and dragons two-by-two behind me.  I bet we looked more like an arrow end on a spear than we did an arrow to point somewhere.  Also, we flew as close as we could to the water below to avoid detection by any lookouts on any Berserker ships.

Cazi looked a bit disappointed, as we were flying, and relayed what she was feeling, “The mission is only going to be an aerial assault, not close combat.  I was hoping to kick some Berserker butt today.”

“Unless you land on a ship just to give them a few parting remarks,” Meen said.  “Some parting them over there, some parting them over here, some parting them way over on the other side of the ship staining the deck.”

I nodded, “That’s true.  Just be careful and don’t get captured yourselves.”

“Duh, Jarl,” Asvord answered.  “That’s a no brainer.  Oh wait, do we know you even have a brain?”
Cazi then smiled, “Oooo ohh, burn.”

I then countered, “Has anybody ever told you?”

“Nice comeback,” Asvord replied.  “You’re getting too good.”

Elsa then announced, but not to awful loud, “We’re here.”

The first ship we came to is in fact on the outside of rim of this ship graveyard.  There are several rocks in this reef behind the ship for all the dragon riders to land.  But I first got off Fredrick and climbed up the back of the ship, which is on the right, to get a view of what is in front of us.  The Berserker ships are located near the middle; four ships in the center with two scout ships coming in from the north and south, just returning from somewhere.  The ship, or rather area where the ship my father and I had been in before is just on the other side of this ship, towards the inner circle.

Not risking being detected, I whispered near Hyrith’s ear to take his group around the outer rim of this ship graveyard and then splitting up one-by-one to be in position.  If they went over where we are right now, then if scouts got free they would look over here where they had come from and we would possibly get made.  I then whispered to my sister to do the same, but her whole group would wait behind another ship.  Once the signal was done, they would move in to keep the Berserkers busy.

“What’s the signal?” she asked.  “Nobody told me the signal.”

“I didn’t think I needed to,” I responded.  “Plus there isn’t really a signal in the first place.  Just wait until you hear destruction and catapults firing with dragons doing the same, and then jump right in.”

Asvord snapped her fingers, “I knew you were going to say that.”

With all them gone, only Garth and I remained, also with our dragons.  I switched over to Riptide.

Garth then asked, “Where is the ship located?”

“Just on the other side of this ship,” I returned softly.  “About thirty yards in front I imagine.”

“Good,” Garth whispered.  “We can submerge now and swim over.  From this point, we would get a better viewing angle to spot the sunken ship.  Oh and when we put the masks on, we won’t be able to talk anymore.  Just use hand signals.  We’ll slowly submerge into the water as our bodies will need time to adjust to the different environment.  Plus, if you haven’t noticed yet while flying at different heights, your ears will pop if you go up and down too fast.  The slower you go the better.  That is even more prevalent when going underwater.  Believe me, I know.”

Garth rubbed his ear once he said that.  He must have experimented to see if it is the same with flying.  Guess he found out the hard way.

“Nearly got an ear infection,” Garth stated.  “Oh, and no sudden movements as well.”

“Anything else you are forgetting?” I asked.

“Nope,” he chuckled.  “Think that is everything.”

          “You think,” I echoed.

“Oh, actually there is,” he stated.

          “Figures,” I replied.

Garth said, “Take off as much metal as you can.  The metal would just way you down, especially in the emergency case of swimming back up to the top.  A normal body would just be suspended as if in mid-air in the water.  Each additional item, even additional clothing, would be more weight that would pull you down into the sea further, if you were just not moving in the water.”

Garth then helped me put on my mask and then he put on his.

I thought, “So the worse that could happen is me dying by my own breathing.  The least that could happen is getting an ear infection with the possibility of losing hearing in that ear.  Great.”

Garth got me started on a easy rhythm to breathe by.  Then by hand signals to his dragon, he told him to slowly submerge.

I thought as we went along, “Boy, breathing with your mouth takes real concentration.  You would not think it would, as breathing is an involuntary action, but with your mouth you have to make your body breathe through your mouth.  The fear of possibly dying, which I think was just to scare me, by my own breathing, kept me concentrating enough.  When I think about it, I could just rip the mask off my face and then swim up to the surface.  Although, from the depth we are now getting to, I would probably run out of air way before getting to the surface.”

Garth had Riptide slowly pick up speed in the water.  The eeriness of being underwater is very surreal.  Various fish swimming by; I thought a few gave me a look of, “What are you doing down here?  You’re going to get yourself hurt or killed, idiot.” And then they would swim on by.  The pressure on all sides of me from the water increasingly got more and more the further we go down.  Thankfully, we did not have to swim down to much further as we could then see the sunken ship in front of us.  Even with the reef of jagged rocks that catches most of the ships, the depth to the sea here looks as high as the sky is above us… endless.  It is also amazing of how dark just a few twenty or thirty feet makes the sea look.  With my eyes finally adjusting, I could see better, but not by much.  This whole time, Fredrick followed right behind Riptide off his right flank.

Arriving at ship, Garth pointed at it.  I nodded my head to say, “This is the right one.”  I recognized it by the mast which was barely still connected to the sail.  I leaned over Garth’s shoulder to point where Fredrick had fired the hole in the ship.  Riptide glided over to the spot and just before we went in, Garth signaled to me a “two” and a “zero” with a handshake then pointed at some type of gauge on the tank on our front right side.  He then checked and pointed at each gauge for each tank

My eye brows did raise alarm, but I did nod once in acknowledgement as we entered the ship.  Pointing to my right, we still slowly moved towards the captain’s quarters.  In tight spaces, we did not want to make our situation even more perilous as it already is.

Thoughts started racing through my head now, but I forced myself to calm down, “Only twenty minutes left of air… but it has only been five minutes since we start.  Either he didn’t get as much air in as he thought or… or… we must have a slow enough leak in one of the tanks.  You would think we would see bubbles rising up from the tanks, but Garth did not see anything wrong.  Let’s just hope I find that artifact… and fast!”

I am a Daughter of Ares, I do not need a subject

Nice job of showing how unlikely Jarl think the chances are of meeting Berserkers by using "as low as Astrid marrying Snotlout".

Yeah, that's never going to happen.

You might remember me if you are also a "veteran" lol, I started playing SOD back in early 2014 so I remember the old glitches and I remember when there was just Berk and the main SOD island. I don't play SOD all that often anymore but I won't forget the memories and experiences I had playing it. I don't regularly visit the forum either, I just kinda moved on from that stage of my life lol.

Anyway, heres where you'll find me these days:

Finally caught up, I've been busy with a project and procuring parts in Canada is not an easy task.

As always great work! Especially last chapter when asking to go on an adventure.

on the other hand

I drew this when I first came to the forums, this is the scuba saddle.

Once my parts come in I will be less acitve on the forums because I'll be busy wrangling bugs in my code and figuring out how to not crash a 5000 dollar aircraft.

On the Subject of Hackers

please read this link, it helps to identify the different types of hackers. I have hacked computers, and servers in the past (despite not being the best at code) but I never do it for personal gain. Unfortunately the hackers most people refer to on the internet are crackers so they bring a bad light on the hacking community in general. I only learned to hack code because I needed to in order to hack my microwave and other software in my house.

Don't be a Cracker you ruin it for everyone!

See, if anybody suggests

See, if anybody suggests anything, I eventually/sooner-or-later add it or have it make an appearence.

Do you like how I added how Garth has to improve the wood's sealing because the wood was soaked by the water and was under the pressure of the water for long enough that it weaked the boards and thus the seals?

While that was a detail I

While that was a detail I overlooked, I should mention the reason for me overlooking it is that when properly treated, wood will not be weakened by water. I do love how you consider every detail, so keep it up!

But with the extra pressure from the going far enough under water (as I'm pretty sure that even just a few ten yards to even probably about thirty to fifty, about how far Garth and Jarl went, the water pressure is pretty great) that the water pressure did more damage than the water did to the wood.  The pressure weakened wood which made the water more able to weaken the wood through soaking it.

I do pay attention, or try to pay attention, to even the details of how many days it has been (or a I think it has been) when I reference the RTTE episodes.  I have to watch them again and pay attention to the sunlight, where the sun is, what color the sky is to see if it is sundown/sunup, and what direction the shadow is pointing.  So I watch the episodes again and pay attention to the things in the background more than I actually do the dialouge.  Though since I've seen those episodes already a few times, then I know what happens and can better spot the small details.

I think the small details are what make or break a great story.  Without them, the story comes off bland, especially when writing a fan-fic with no pictures.  The extra two or three adjectives or adverbs I use are intentional so my words really do paint a picture, like when I say Jarl grab someone's left arm with his right hand.  That would usually be worded: jarl grabbed someone's arm with his hand.  The reader would then have to imagine what arm and what hand, but if I go ahead and tell them then they can just read the story as it flows much better.

Thanks, I really actually do a lot of homework for these chapters to get details on dragons behaviors, where certain islands are by using the interactive Netflix map of Hiccup's Map, and be sure to get the other characters in my story in and keep their characters true to what person asked to be in the story.

If anybody suggest something for their character or even the story/plot, it will eventually make it in.  I do listen and remember things about characters and take every comment as encouragement to even do better than I did before.
