My schedule didn't really allow for much work this week, but still even with classes starting, I will have time on the weekends and then starting the week on Sunday.  Might have to move the posting time to Saturday night instead of Friday night, but we'll see.  Since I'm basically doing the chapters in one day anyway and on Saturday anyway, maybe I should move it to Saturday.

But without further adue, here is my chapter.

We are winding down in the story, so there won't be too many more chapters left to begin with.  Though the way I write, this could take like 10 chapters to finish.  Again, we'll see.

I hope you enjoy this chapter! :)

On the Edge of Mystery

Chapter 26

Going into the Unknown

Asvord woke me up around First light; looking out the window, the sun had not even come over the horizon.  The fog which had settled in last night is more of a mist now coming off the sea.

Getting up I could definitely feel my injuries from my fall the other day, well more or less extensive bruising.  Today, however, I had no headache… though there was something else is aching inside.

After my sister had aroused me I began to prepare for the trip and possible but probable battle ahead.  I packed several different tools and things which might come in handy or be helpful in some way.  When you go into a fight and do not know what you are up against, it is better to become prepared for anything.

Once my saddlebags were packed, Asvord mentioned to me my dragon is outside.  Asvord pointed which direction he is at, but also that the others, who are coming, are doing the same and will be ready shortly.  Taking my bags over there to him, I attached them to his saddle.

“What’s this?” I ask my little sister upon reentering the Clubhouse.

“Your breakfast,” she replied.  Before I could answer, Elsa said, “Now come on, Mister.  You gotta eat something.  Maybe that attributed to your mild event of unconsciousness due to increased exposure to an unknown element present in the Dragon Island Smog.”

I replied, “I think you need this more than me.  Also, some of the smog smell may have rubbed off onto you.”

“Oh,” she slapped my stomach.  “Just eat it.”

Taking the tray and going back to my room, I ate what Elsa had prepared for me: a fried salmon sandwich with lettuce and mother’s special sauce.  As soon as I took the first bite, I realized I am hungry and actually finished the meal; washing it all down with a cool glass of yak milk.

A knock on the door followed by Hiccup, Astrid, and Asvord coming in; Hiccup said, “We’re ready.”

I grabbed my bow from the table, clipping it on my belt as well as four bolas, and slung over my right shoulder two quivers full of arrows.  Last thing I grabbed was helmet; strapping it on I proceeded with them outside the Clubhouse.  Seeing everybody else on their dragons, I was about ready to announce our departure, but someone started yelling.  It is Cazi.  She flew down on Sparklebolt from the direction of the Stables.  At first none of us could understand what she was talking about, not until a moment later could we realize what she is saying.

“Guys, guys!  It’s Anora!  She’s gone!” Cazi yelled as she woahed up her dragon to a hover.

         Immediately I asked, “How?!  When?!”

“Don’t know.  Recently.  Saw her making a Bee-line to the northwest,” Cazi replied.

While jumping on my dragon and nudging him into the air, I quickly declared, “We can’t let Anora get to the smog before we can track her.  If she does, we might lose her.”

Hiccup said, “Leave that to Toothless and I.  Even though we might not be able to see her, we can still track her.”

In the blink of an eye, every dragon rider flew into the air on their dragon; Cazi swiftly switched over to Astrid and Stormfly, at the same time Angie switching over to double with Asvord.  Giving a quick glance back, both Cazi’s Skrills sat down as if they were on guard.  Cazi mentioned Sparklebolt, Electic, and Nina are more than enough to protect Mystery.

“Me and Angie have been working together,” Cazi stated loud enough to be heard over the rush of the wind.  “We are training our Skrills to be able to be guards at Mystery and ‘hold down the fort’ while everyone else is away.  Mystery will be fine.”

Cazi saying that only gave me a brief moment of relief.  But turning to the task at hand made me concentrate.  Hiccup and I are out in front with everyone else following behind; every dragon quickly up to their top speed.  In the far of distant we could see Anora.  Thank goodness it is going to be a bright sunny day or else the Razorwhip would blend in with the cloudy sky, not to mention the smog once she gets there.

As I feared, Anora did fly into the smog.  When we arrived at the smog, however, I now let Hiccup take point.  Hiccup gave a command and motioned to Toothless as he let out a sonic scream into the smog.  This scream sounds eerily similar to a Night Furdy’s sound it makes when they fly, usually when diving; reminiscent of a time once ago.

         “Anything?” I asked.

Waiting for a moment, Toothless looked back at Hiccup and Hiccup looked at me, “Yes, we got something.”

         “Lead the way,” I answered.

Hiccup then told everyone else, “Stay close and on alert.  When flying through this smog, a sea stack can come up without hardly a warning.”

         Everyone nodded.

Now we flew in single file behind Toothless and Hiccup; not at every dragon’s top speed, yet still quite fast.  After flying through the smog for a while, occasionally we were double file.  As long as we were making it through, no one complained about dodging the sea stacks.

We are covering quite a bit of ground every minute.  But a minute turned into two, two into three, three into four, and so on.  By a rough calculation we have gone… very far since we started.  I am guessing about fifteen to twenty miles.  With every passing minute from this moment forward, I became very anxious and nervous we had lost Anora.  According to Toothless, we are still on track.

The sea stacks now came at quicker intervals forcing all of us to cut our dragons’ speed virtually in half.

Toothless and Hiccup are still in the front; Fredrick and I are behind them; Astrid, Stormfly, and Cazi are off my right; and Asvord, Spiker, and Angie are off my left.  Because of our slower speed, it allowed us to be able to talk to each other easier.

Angie said in a lower tone, “Didn’t know the smog went this out this far from Dragon Island.”

         “I didn’t either,” I replied.

Hiccup responded as well, “I haven’t been up this way in a while, but even then I don’t think I have ever been this far north on this side of the archipelago.  So I’m a little surprised too, the smog still around this far north.  We left the area around Dragon Island a few miles ago, but now I think we are nearing another island with this many sea stacks appearing.”

Cazi then quipped, “Why are we whispering?”

Several of us chuckled; Astrid answered, “It is also the setting we are in.  There is no other sound but our dragons’ wings and the air rushing past our ears.  The stillness of the air makes you want to whisper yourself, yet the weight of the smog adds to it.”

Asvord also said, “How do we know we are heading the right direction?  How do we even know we are still following Anora?”

“As far as Toothless is concerned,” Hiccup answered.  “We are following something.  The sound from his sonic scream is bouncing back from different place and is constantly in front of us.  Unlike the sea stacks, their sound is set and constantly gets closer until we pass it.”

Asvord proceeded to point out, “Taking all of that information plus the fact if you look down.  See?  The sea is starting turn into a tide.  Not to mention the sound of the sea is getting higher in pitch like it is getting shallower the further we go.”

“Get ready, everyone,” I stated.  “If we are coming closer to an island, we don’t know what is awaiting us.  It could be anything from wild dragons to Hari’s men.”

Everybody in turn readied their weapons as we did in fact start to see a shoreline start to appear, plus the smog lifting up slightly as it is going over the new island.  Still visibility is down.

Hiccup told us, “Let’s land and continue on foot.  But keep your dragons close.”

I added, “If anybody is home, looks like they might be not be expecting anybody.  So let’s ease up to front door and let ourselves in.”

All I got was blank looks.

“What?” I questioned.  “I just wanted to be sure we all understand what we are doing.”

“I know,” Asvord said.  “We were getting ready for something intense and serious, then you said something that the Twins might say.”

I smiled as we all came in for a landing, “I wanted to make sure Astrid and Hiccup felt at home.”

Astrid dismounted Stormfly, followed by Cazi; Astrid rolled her eyes as she pulled out her axe, “Thanks.  Like any of us need any reminding of Ruffnut and Tuffnut.”

“Now that you have your axe out,” I said.  “I’ll make sure not to remind you of the Twins… especially Snotlout.”

“Oh don’t even start,” Astrid declared taking a step towards me.

Asvord put her arm in front of her, “No one can do that to my brother, Astrid-.”

         “Yeah,” I agreed.

         “-except me,” Asvord finished.

“Yea- wait, what?” I looked at my sister, she just grinned.  “Well, that would be something I would say to you, so fair point.”

What Asvord said earlier is right.  We are getting ready for something serious.  I am worried, scared, angry, nervous, and exhilarated.  So as a good leader should, I try to lighten the mood so we would be uplifted, ready for the task at hand.

So far for the whole trip, not a single dragon ever growled or warned us of anybody or anything.  Now we are on this unknown island, even to the slightest sign of difference from our dragons, we will pay attention to.

Two by two, Hiccup and Astrid led us deeper into the island; followed by me, Asvord, and Elsa; Cazi and Meen; Angie and Ali; Sapphire and Explod; and Garth and Hyrith, bringing up the rear.

Slowly, we made our way through island into the forest that was near our landing point.  The island itself seems a lot like a volcano which imploded once it exploded for the last time.  Reason being is because there looks like there is a huge wall of natural rock surrounding the island, just in from the shoreline, probably encircling the island.

“If you think it was quiet before,” Meen stated.  “It seems even more so now.”

“No kidding,” Cazi retorted.  “I feel like I can hear myself think and my heart beating out of my chest.”

Hiccup abruptly raised his hand and knelt down.  We are going through the forest, though there are still hills and valleys around which we have gone up and down through a couple.  Hiccup looked back and waved at Astrid, Cazi, and me to come up.  Crawling up to the edge of the rise, we looked over.  Cazi and I gasped.

         “Is that-?” Hiccup began.

I nodded and whispered, “Yes, that is Anora.”

Cazi softly asked, “Why is she just standing there?”

Hiccup observed and said, “I think she is sniffing around for something.”

I then acknowledged, “I’m going to move up and see if I can get close.  Once I’m near, you guys can follow.”

Easing my way up over the hill into a clearing, I walked slowly towards Anora.  Just before I reached her tail I called out her name.  She did not even notice me.  Working my way around to Anora’s head, she seemed as if she is waiting for something.  I waved back to the others bring them on.

Cazi is the first to come up and say to me as she grabbed Anora, “What is she doing?  Did she lose the trail of Anora?”

“I don’t know what to think,” I said.

Hiccup and I stepped back, Hiccup stated as he turned to face the opposite way, “This doesn’t make any sense.  Why would Anora come here unless…”

“Unless this is where Annabeth was,” I finished.

Hiccup corrected, “Or where Annabeth is.  Don’t look now, but I get the distinct feeling someone is watching us.”

“I had that feeling the moment we landed,” I replied.  “I wasn’t sure of it until now.  But now that you mentioned it, I really feel like that now.  Maybe that is what Anora is waiting for.”

Hiccup nonchalantly said back to me, “We are being watched.  I just noticed movement in the trees and also on the volcano walls.  I can’t tell exactly what it is because of the smog, but it cannot be good.  Leisurely go over to the others and whisper to them to prepare their weapons.  I don’t think these are dragons.”

Following Hiccup’s instructions, I went over to each one of the riders and told them to get ready, yet still look like they are doing something with Anora.  I came back over to Hiccup who then in turn went over to his dragon.  Fredrick, still by my side, I faced him and grabbed for my bow, unfolded it, and locked it into bow position.  Lastly, I tightened the bow strings so I could be ready to fire.

Walking back over to Hiccup, I relayed my idea, “Whatever happens, if Anora bolts off, I’m following her.  If Annabeth is here, I’m going to find her and then we leave.  We are just coming for her.”

Hiccup replied as if he were talking with me about his saddle, “Plus, I don’t think we could win this fight anyway, before it even gets started.  Right now, we are on their turf and their terms.  Those are steep odds to start out with in a fight.  We’ll draw their fire; you go get your girl.”

Then I could not help but crack a small, brief smile.  Hiccup nodded his head once at me in approval.  Hiccup then walked away to get everybody for the task at hand.  Hiccup took charge and gave everybody specific jobs.

Cazi came over and looked at me, “Are you going after Annabeth?”

         “Yes,” I simply answered.

“No way you are going by yourself,” she reacted.  “I’m coming no matter what you say.”

“Alright,” I said.  “Be ready for anything.  We are coming in blind with no clue of who or what we are up against.”

Out of the corner of my eye, back in the direction we came from, I saw movement.  Drawing an arrow, rapidly to my bow, using my ears I followed the movement and then fired into the forest, giving a lead for the arrow.  The arrow hit a tree in the smog, followed by a snapping of the arrow.

Hiccup then cried out, “We know you are out there!  Show yourself!”

From out of the blue -or smog in this case- vikings dropped down or appeared from the smog, with weapons drawn, and started to encircle us.  This in turn spooked Anora as she darted off to the north.

“Come on!” I yelled at Cazi.

She hopped on the back of Fredrick with me while we flew after Anora.

Astrid called out as we flew, “We’ll cover for you!”

Oddly enough once Cazi and I left, we did not hear any dragon blasts or viking yells of any kind.  That worried me, but I have my own task at hand:

         Finding Annabeth.

One thing to make clear: I REALLY LOVE DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My background story for my main OC

Backstory: Sonora was a very exciting girl. She was just a toddler when she learned of Dragon Fighting. She was five, and didn't understand anything. But she went along with it. Soon, a terrible storm hit, her parents were putting her and her two year old sister into the cellar to stay safe, when a huge wave of flood from the ocean threw down the door and washed away the house, as well as the crate where she, her sister Elira, and all the supplies in their (an axe, food for a week, fresh water, rope, swords, bow and arrow, other Viking stuff, spare change of clothes for everyone in the family, blankets, flint and steel, and a yak hair tent) were washed away to sea. Her parents most likely drowned, and although they couldn't swim, Sonora turned out to be a natural. Soon lulled to sleep by the waves, she curled her sister toward herself and slept. In the morning, as the sun shined into the crate, Sablie saw a remote island not far away. She jumped out of the box, this being a mistake for she didn't expect the ocean water, grabbed the side of the box, and kicked her legs with all her might, holding on for dear life. She paddled in the direction of the island, and got to the shore. Slowly placing the tent far up the shore like her parents taught her, she made quite a cozy home. Starting a fire with flint and steel and driftwood, she took some meat she found in the crate, and cooked it, and mashed up part of it for Elira, who was now crying. Cradling her and feeding her the meat, Elira slowly went to sleep. What she didn't realize is that the crying had attracted a dragon. When she heard a roar, she ran outside with a lightweight sword to defend herself and sister. When she got outside, she saw a rare Sand Wraith. It stood outside, cocking its head at the tent. Sablie dropped her sword as she was shaking terribly. The dragon looked at her, and nuzzled his nose to her. Looking the dragon in full eyes, she didn't see evilness. She just saw warmness. Reaching out her hand, the dragon touched it with his nose. Hugging the dragon and crying, she fell asleep under his wing. She woke up around noon, and found no sign of the dragon. Thinking it was a dream, she gathered the rest of the supplies and took them into the tent when she heard the beating of wings behind her. It wasn't a dream after all! The dragon slowly dropped what he had in his claws, which were fish! Food! Sonora smiled and hugged the dragon. The dragon bent down and extended his wing for her. Un surely, she climbed onto his back, and he took OF on a calm flight around the island. She returned to find her sister crying again, and shushed her gently. After cooking the fish, she mashed more for her sister and gave the dragon his share too. That night the dragon didn't leave the tent, and slept next to it, keeping it warm. After a few days, they moved to a clearing near a spring, with lots of saplings. Using the axe, Sablie cut a big wood pile by the house. Every day at the rise of the moon she went flying with the Sand Wraith, and that is why she named him Moonrise.
When she was seven and her sister was four, she was scouting in the wilderness for any deer she could hunt, when she stumbled against a d.ead Razorwhip and four eggs. She kneeled down and felt each of the eggs, and she couldnt feel a heart beat in the first three. In the fourth one though, she could feel a faint heart beat. She took all four eggs home anyway, and when she came to the tent where Elira was rolling in the sand with Moonrise and cooking lunch, she felt an egg shake. Calling her sister over, she set the egg down in front of her sister, and the egg completely split apart. A baby Razorwhip fell out, and Elira immediately fell in love with her. Naming the baby Razwhipway, the two haven't been seperated since. The rest of the eggs never hatched, though Sablie didn't give it up until a week later, when she broke them in half to use as bowls.     (I included this part of the story because it means a lot to me, and helps understand the ending better)
Sonora was ten and Elira was seven, when a bad storm hit. The next morning, Sonora steeped out of the wooden shack she built to find her beach much destroyed. Calling her sister and Razwhipway (who was now a broad wing) to help clean up when she saw a peculiar sight. A shiny pink body was laying on the beach. It was a Tide Glider. She was a beauty. Calling Moonrise to help her, she pulled the Tide Glider into the yard (which was pretty much beach). When the poor dragon woke up, she looked around, then finally, deciding we weren't a threat, spit at herself. Everyone started in shock at the dragon. She whipped around and looked at us. Her wounds were gone, and we couldn't stop staring (even Moonrise and Razwhipway). Sonora slowly approached her with a sea bass. Not taking her eyes of Sablie, the dragon ate, and accepted a green plant dragons seem to like. After that, she stared at Sablie, and slowly reached out to touch her hand. Sundance was named for the way she danced in the sun, in the mornings. There were now three dragons living with them.
It had been a year since peace was brought to Berk from the dragons, although Sonora didn't know it. She was fourteen years old, and now even Razwhipway could fly. They used hand made saddles from deer skin and boar tusks with wild dyes. Sablie was flying Moonrise around the islands, when she noticed a black dragon that she had never seen before. She of course, knew most of the dragons on her island, and this was one she had never seen. Munching on an apple, she decided to make friends and find out the full look. This dragon was faster than Moonrise, which was a surprise since he was the only Sand Wraith and fastest dragon on the island. She landed where she saw the black dragon land, but was shocked! There was a rider standing next to the dragon saying "This is a new island bud. Do you sense any trouble?" The black dragon snorted, and turned in her direction, where she was concealed behind the trees. The Dragon walked over to the trees now, and pushed Sablie over so she fell in the riders view. He looked as shocked as her. He looked at her and said "Hello, we are friends and don't want to hurt you,". Sablie was scared as she was the time she saw Moonrise for the first time. "Who are you," she managed to say "What do you want from my island," The stranger looked at her and said " My name is Hiccup, and we are not going to take anything from this island. We will help you if you want us to",. Feeling she could trust him, she told him her story, and about Moonrise, who was happily playing with the Black dragon, who looked surprisingly like Moonrise. Afterward she brought him to the shack, where he met Elira, Razwhipway and Sundance, and he told them about Berk. "I think we used to live on Berk, at least that is what mommy said," said Sablie, "But how? I thought Berk fought dragons,". So Hiccup told her about the peace, and Toothless. Finding that they did want to go back to Berk, Hiccup stayed the night, then helped them to Berk, and helping them build a good big Viking hut with stables and get fresher weapons. They had lived peacefully at Berk ever since.

Backstory on how Viking Name found/trained Dragon Name: Anna and Anora found each other on Dragon Island or really Anora found Annabeth.Anora found Annabeth On Dragon Island with her family she studied Annabeth's family really closely and took a shine to her. When Ana was one she started to slowly reveal herself like coming in at night, when her mom saw the dragon she screamed causing her to accidently scratch her cheek. Alvin then came in seeing that his wife was about to k.ill the dragon he stopped her and told her to look what Anna was doing which was gently petting Anora's horn. On her second birthday Alvin said that they could keep her.  A year afterward they were attacked by Berserkers and Alvin told Anora to do what ever it took to take care of her. (This was before Riders or Berk)

Just interested

You used other riders in your fan-ficus like Jack, Cullan and others, why didn't you use them in this one?

Having many at one time, made typing hard to keep track of them.

It is difficult to use so many characters and still give each one as much time as everybody else.  So the story did not feel so very crowded sometimes and keeping track of all the characters at one time, I had some of the Characters stay on Berk.  Kind of how in Race to the Edge on Netflix, we don't see a whole lot of Stoick, Gobber, Gothi, etc. later in the seasons as the story concentrates on the kids.

I have 28 characters that either I have created or others have wanted in my stories.  Then I have the "villian(s)", then the extra vikings to continue the story, fathers/mothers/siblings of the other characters, and then of course the original characters from Httyd.  So I have a ton of characters to pick from.

The reason I picked the characters to be at Mystery, in this book, is because the majority of the characters are from players on here that are actually reading my book.  That was the biggest reason for picking who got to go to Mystery to begin with.

However, this doesn't mean the other characters won't be in this book again or in the next book.

I just wanted the story to be a little more focused with a slightly smaller group.  Although, I still have 12 characters to deal with at the story right where it is now.

Nice of you to notice.  And if you read my comment through again very carefully, this isn't the last we've seen of any of the characters.

If you don't see it, ask me again and I'll tell you.
