Marking

I spent the rest of the week avoiding everyone and only giving one-word answers to questions. The more I got entrenched in dragon-ness, the more I realized it was dangerous. Anyone involved with me couldn't be safe. And I hated it.

It was the Friday after the whole chain-and-river incident that I kind of snapped.

I was stalking through the woods, far away from where ANYONE should be, and I heard talking.

Human talking.

"Think we'll find anything today?"

"'Course we will. Broken trap down by that creek, lizard-like footprints, large 'birds' in the area? It's all adding up. All we need is a specimen to prove it."

"I dunno. I still think the boss is crazy."

"Oh, he's crazy alright. But he's on to something. And hey, it pays good money."

My blood was boiling and my eyes were so focused I could see the quivering of a leaf in the wind. Those  specimens they were talking about were MY DRAGONS.  And that trap had almost KILLED me.

"Oh! Looklooklook!"

"Hush!"

Hunter one set the rifle to his shoulder and took careful aim.

Maybe it was just a bird or a vole. But I couldn't take that risk. And honestly, by this point I was raring for a fight.

I exploded out of my perch with a roar.

The hunters jerked and the rifle went off with a  BANG.

But it was too late. I was unstoppable.

I landed on their heads and shoved them down. The gun skittered away. I tore after it and brought my foot down on it, again and again and again. The wooden handle splintered into tiny little pieces.

I whirled and raised my wings, teeth bared in victory.

The two men sat where they had fallen, faces gray and breath in spurts.

I lifted my chin and spread my wings with a  hisssss. A dragon is a simple beast, easy to dismiss and abuse. But a Draconian?

They were whimpering at the new demon.

I narrowed my eyes at them and growled. A Draconian is messy business. Knowing that they still think like a human  changes things. Some people won't hurt them like they would an animal, knowing they are more complex--knowing they are more human.

But others? To them, Draconians are freaks of nature who  cannot be allowed to continue.

To those with something to hide, a thinking, feeling Draconian is a threat.

I got the feeling their boss fell into the latter category. I needed to send a message, without actually sending a message.

I glared at the two money-hungry fops. They held their hands in front of their faces in surrender.

I recognized one of them! I had seen him two weeks ago, poking around the cliffs farther south. He couldn't come back. No one  could come back.

An idea came into my head, messy for sure, but....it could work. The dragons couldn't defend themselves against this threat, couldn't even identify it when it came. But I could.

I protect.

I grabbed the nearest one's right arm and jerked him to his feet.

Hm, that was a mistake. He was taller than me. I yanked his arm down lower, where my tail could reach.

His eyes widened and he cried out in fear.

But it was too late.

I dragged my barb, deliberately, knowingly, down the fleshy part of his forearm.

Strike one.

A bit of venom leaked out, and I let it, but not too much. Somehwere underneath my savage fury registered the fact that these two really were clueless money-seeking idiots who had no idea what they were getting into.

He screamed as the venom took effect and dropped to ground. I let him and advanced on his companion.

He tried to flee.

St.upid. I leaped, pinned him, did the same thing, and was about to let him go. But then I considered.

I had already spotted him twice.

I gave him another long cut. Strike one. And strike two.

I stomped pointedly on the gun one last time and pointed at them. Don't come back.

And then I took to the skies, guilt drowned in the fierce fire of triumph and rage.

Raar I is a dragon XD

Yes, Ness is starting to get a bit touchy about humans (can you blame her?), but thankfully that phase doesnt last too long....
She still marks hunters though.

Hunter and hunted

From then on, it was a silent war.

Oh, I left hikers and picnic-ers and campers and all your wilderness rompers alone. My quarrel was not with them.
It was the hunters.

Yes, I know most view it as a sport. And I'm okay with that. But I'm not okay with someone threatening to hurt my dragons. They are MINE.

I stalked them carefully. If they wore hunting garb but carried no gun, I checked them briefly and dismissed them. But if they carried a gun, I would watch them carefully. The closer we got to a nest or popular sunning or drinking sight, the more carefully I watched. If they left their guns unattended for even a second , they were gone and crushed to splinters. But if they saw anything, pointed a little critter out, and I couldn't see what it was, I would pounce, knocking them to the ground and disappearing as quickly as I came.

But if they had  dart guns and camo vests....well, they didn't last long.

They learned to fear the woods.

No, I didn't kill anyone! But I did give them strikes. I would drag my barb down their forearm (the fleshy part, no arteries or veins), just deep enough to scar. That way if they came back I could see how many times I had caught them.

I never saw those original hunters again. But about once or twice a week, I would catch a small party of two or three (sometimes even four or five). They all got strikes, of course. Some were even repeats. But as of the end of spring and beginning of summer, no one came back more than twice--that I caught, anyway.

I hoped they wouldn't. I didn't want to have to sentence them if they reached and passed strike three.

Conner, Miss Amy, Miss Ellen, Gild.ie and Joy--none of them knew. I still kept my weekly Tuesday appointments with them--although in a couple weeks it would just be Miss Amy for the summer. Conner was going to a summer camp in Arizona. And I checked on Joy and Gild.ie every day.

Thank goodness the dragons hadn't told Joy. The girls knew that something was off, of course. They didn't know why they weren't allowed near the streams anymore, or why there was always a larger dragon there to escort them when they played with their scaly friends. But Gild.ie figured it was nothing good--and in this instance, she was right.

"You're always so pessimistic," I dodged when she tried to question me. "If there was something seriously wrong, I'd get you out of here." And I would. But we weren't in the 'seriously' wrong territory yet. Just slightly dangerous.

"And you'd tell us?" she prodded.

"I'd have to, wouldn't I?"

She looked me over. "Mmmm."

I had to laugh. "You sound just like your mother."

She gave a tiny smile with just a hint of pride. "Thank you."

And then Joy ran into us, chasing a Terrible Terror, bowling us all over into the grass.

I mussed her hair playfully and felt her head. "Do you need to have your horns filed down again?"

Joy ducked out of my reach. "No! Mommy already did it! No more!"

"We did," Gild.ie assured me. "Two days ago. You should have seen the look on her face!"

Joy growled in annoyance and we both laughed.

It was a tough balancing act, but I did it. Not well, admittedly. There were a few times I slipped up--and I'll tell you about them soon. But for now, it was okay. was okay. The dragons were okay. The hunters didn't know about my family or Conner or Gild.ie and especially not Joy. And that was all that mattered.

Ahhh

Ahh this was more explanitory about the battle between Ness and the Hunters- I was kind of confused from the last chapter, but figured you'd probably explain and you did ^^

Gild.ie reminds me of a girl I know in rl. she's a very good character! Very believable. And of course Joy is delightful I love the part with her crown getting filed and she can't hardly stand for it xD

Good description, smol wild bean. So cute!

Hope you had a happy thanksgiving!

Strange Sight

I didn't really like humans much for a while. I began to see them as Oak had--cunning, greedy, willing to kill and take whatever they want. I know, I know, that is not what most people are like, but I was scared and  very  angry at what was happening, and I kinda blamed it on the human race in general.

I slipped up a few times, I guess, with some derogatory comments to Conner. Finally he folded his arms and said, "Is that what you really think?"

"Huh?" I was caught completely off guard.

"Humans being untrustworthy and greedy. Is that  really how you see them?" he sounded a little hurt.

I thought about it for a moment, stunned. "No," I said slowly. "I don't. I didn't mean for that to come out that way." I rubbed my face wearily. "There's just a lot going on right now."

"What? What's going on that is making you act so weird? First you barely talk and won't go anywhere near water, and then you start showing up out of nowhere like you just ran a marathon, and you have a lot more new scratches and bruises--don't think I haven't noticed. Not to mention you suddenly becoming a human hater."

"I don't hate humans--how could I? I am one." But I couldn't look him in the eyes while I said it.

His mouth twisted. "I mean, you are, but at the same time not really. And you haven't answered my question."

I shook my head and drew my wings in a little tighter. "Trust me, if things start to go wrong or get dangerous, I'll get you out as fast as possible."

"Really?" he frowned. "That's the answer I get?"

"Yes," I said. "I protect my friends, no matter how nosy they get."

Thankfully Shadow bounded over and nearly knocked me off my feet, sparing me from further questioning (which was actually her plan in the first place--dragons are very intelligent). But the conversation needled at me. He was right. I was starting to lose touch with my human side, grow too close to the wilds. In trying to protect the dragons, I was becoming one of them, and that is not my purpose.

Summer was nearly here, only a few weeks away, and with it came a lot more hikers and campers and all-round nature lovers. I was almost relieved to have more innocent humans around; it distracted me from the hunters.

I was flitting around one day, enjoying the breeze and the lush green, when I heard something odd.

I paused and cocked my ears. A slight screeching noise, and then...Mozart?

I crept forward until I was in the middle of a dark bush, peering out into a tiny space scattered with small rocks and boulders. The leaves cast patterned shadows across my face.

It was a young woman, maybe a few years older than me, standing tall and silent. Her long, wavy hair was swept up into a loose ponytail, probably to let her play her violin more freely. As she drew her bow across the strngs, sometimes it squeaked, but the notes hummed together in tune. It wasn't something I would choose to play or listen to, but her brow was furrowed with concentration and her lips were almost smiling. She clearly loved this song.

I stayed put, watching curiously. When she finished, she let out a contented sigh and opened her eyes. They were brown, the same color mine had been.

She began another song, this one wilder and faster. I smiled quietly to myself. Maybe there was hope for her yet.

I eased back, slowly creeping out of the bush. The loud snap of cracked wood echoed and I froze.

The young woman whirled, bow raised like a weapon.

The noise hadn't come from me.

"Who's there?" her voice was trembling. I understood her fear. "Come out where I can see you or go away!"

There was a moment where nothing moved but the trees, shushing in the sunlight. And the a low purr rumbled from the bushes on the opposite clearing. A pair of yellow-green eyes blinked from the shadows.

The woman stumbled back and nearly dropped her violin. "Oh my gosh," she half-choked, half-whispered. "Oh my gosh."

A Northern Shortsnout slowly crept forward, ears pricked and eyes alert. He stopped with half of his furry body still in the bushes. He cocked his head at her and rumbled again.

I was breathing in loud spurts. What was he thinking?!

The woman slowly backed away, trying not to stumble. I couldn't see her face, but I was sure it was terrified.

The dragon eased forward again, purring the whole time.

Gradually, I began to understand. He wasn't trying to talk to her--he was trying to calm her, to show he wasn't a threat. He wanted to say hello.

I wanted to burst out and roar at both of them to stay away. Couldn't he see it was dangerous? But then Conner's hurt expression flitted across my vision. Is that how you really see them?

I watched as he grew closer and closer. The woman was breathing so hard I could hear her from where I crouched.

The woman had backed into a tree, with nowhere to go. The dragon crouched on all fours, neck arched to bring his head down to hers. He rumbled again, but didn't move. An invitation.

The woman didn't move, just stared at him and clutched at the tree. I sighed quietly and got ready to chase down the disappointed dragon and give him a talking-to.

But then she gasped out a steadying breath and moved her hand, slowly, cautiously, to brush his snout. He purred and she gasped again. But she kept stroking him softly. His eyes closed in pleasure. Then he retracted his head to look down at her, pleased.

Suddenly he raised his snout. He sniffed the air and glanced at my bush. I made met his surprised gaze and narrowed my eyes.

The woman reached to pet him again. He flinched and backed away.

"What's wrong?" she whispered, but it was too late. He lowed a bugling cry disappeared back into the forest.

The woman was trembling, clenching and unclenching her fists. She turned and studied my bush. I stayed perfectly still.

Finally, she snorted and picked up her violin case. "Stupid," she muttered. "There's no such thing as dragons."

I blinked at her. Her voice sounded angry, but her posture looked...sad. Almost as disappointed as the Northern Shortsnout.

Is that how you really see them?

How could I hate humans? I am one.

I winced. I had convinced Oak that riders and dragons were meant to be together. Now all I had to do was convince myself.

As in-depth as you want! Just keep in mind that these people are RL city kids.
.
-Personality (how they would react to different scenarios, e.g. a half-human half-dragon)
.
-Physical traits (coloring, length of hair and limbs, height)
.
-Code name (okay, but not really a code, more of the name you've always wanted)
.
-Dragon type (what type of dragon would best suit your character? No hybrids, needs to be one of the dragons in this fanfiction. To make this easier, I will be posting a small gallery of the different types of dragons....sometime).
.
-Anything else that is/isn't relevant (you have no idea what I might do to these poor people, so it's best to be armed with as much info as possible >:D )
.

.

That's about it!

Night and Day

I quickly tracked down the errant young dragon--a particularly green and skittish Northern Shortsnout named something like Sun-dappled Leaves--but for the sake of simplicity we'll call him Dapple.

It took a few hours--he fled quickly--but when I finally caught up to him he had finished being scared and angry and was just kinda depressed.

I apprached him cautiously (what? even friendly dragons are scary) and sat down next to him. The breeze blew his dragony musk into my nose, and I had to hold my breath to keep from coughing.

"So...what were you trying to do?" I asked eventually. "The dragon territories might be open to innocent humans, but they still aren't harmless."

"Its stick sang so beautifully," he lowed mournfully. 'Like a true dragon. How could I not listen?"

"I'm fine with listening,"   I told him. "But you walked right up to her and stuck your snout in her face."

Dapple ducked his head. "I was curious. The way it stood reminded me of the young Draconian and her sister, and of your human friend Conner."

I went rigid. "What...what reminded you of them?" I asked when I got my voice back.

The young dragon turned to study me. "Surely you know. They way they walk, and talk, and move their strange snouts. They are the same."

They were good, he meant. Not hunters. Not thieves.

My heart was pounding in my throat. This was exactly what I had said to Oak. Learn from the good to separate the bad. The dragons had been watching humans, good humans, interacting with the wilds. They had seen the life and energy a good human could have, and now they were curious. No wonder Oak had been so leery. He had known this would happen--but of course, he was now fine with it...and I wasn't.

Oh, how the tides turn.

I bit my lip and forced myself to think. Underneath all the fear and worry and anger, I agreed with Dapple. There had been something different about that girl, the way Joy and Gild.ie and Conner were different. It wasn't much to go on, but....it had been there. And I had seen the spark in her eyes, and Dapple's, when she first brushed his snout.

"Okay," I said at last. "If you really, really believe that she's not a threat...I won't stop you."

"Truely?" Dapple brightened. "I'm not in trouble?"

I blinked. "I'm not the alpha. I can't make you in trouble for anything."

Dapple gave me a strange, snout-scrunching look that was very disconcerting.

"But...." I hesitated. "You might not find her again. You never know when or where she might be, if she does come back at all."

"There are others, if she does not come," he said matter-of-factly, but I could see the shining in his eyes. I suddenly had no doubt that if that young woman so much as poked her nose into the dragon territories, Dapple would be there.

Sure enough, not two days later, she was back. I found her first.

It was really an accident--I was prowling, looking out for stray hikers that I could warn away (just snap a few twigs and people get nervous and leave in a hurry), when I took a break in a tall, shady tree. I wedged myself into a comfortable crook in the branches and settled down to enjoy the sunlight.

The branches suddenly rustled. My eyes popped open. I had been dozing! The rustling came again, closer this time.

I peered down. Could it be? Yes! It was the girl again, this time with a backpack and water bottle, looking up at the suddenly-visible sky. She didn't smile, exactly, but the satisfaction showed in the set of her jaw and the tilt of her head.

I moved before even realizing I had decided to do so. Shifting a little, I hooked my legs around a thick branch and swung upside-down, tail coiled for balance. I would have dropped to my feet, but the noise alerted her and she turned, so I was kind of stuck where I was.

"Hello."

If she hadn't been so suprised, I think she would have screamed. I suppose I  did look rather frightening, with the bright slit-sharp pupils and crazy hair--not to mention the wings.

Quickly, I pulled myself up. Upside-down is a fun way to see the world, but not so great as a first impression. I balanced on the branch and tilted my head at her. "I said hello."

"I heard," she snapped shakily.

I nodded several times. "Okay. Just checking."

I watched her study me, eyes flickering from the tops of my ears to the scuffed, makeshift boots tied to my legs (they keep falling off, okay? I only have so many pairs of shoes--I had to get creative). I couldn't bring myself to smile at her, seeing as I wasn't exactly thrilled that she was in  my territory. But she looked confident and strong, and I knew the dragons would respect her.

"So...you're a dragonite?" she said at last.

I frowned. "I'm sorry, a what?"

She made an impatient hand gesture. "You know--half dragon, half human."

"And you don't seem surprised," I noted.

"Well, I just met a dragon two days ago, so why not a dragonite?" As soon as the words left her lips, clapped a hand over her mouth and looked at me in horror.

Now I was having a hard time  not smiling. "Ah, yes. I heard about you--the interloper."

She backed away a littled bit, still covering her mouth. I narrowed her eyes at her until she went completely still.

"For your information," I said at last. "It's  draconian , not dragonite. And I heard about you from the dragon himself. He apparently liked your violin skills enough to come out and see who was making that music."

She blinked in shock, and her hand slowly came back down to her side.

I pointed to her right and a little behind her, at the cluster of young birches. "He's just past there, deeper in the woods. If you really want."

She stared at me for a second, just to see if I was serious. "Yes, I do."

I nodded. "Alright then. I'm not stopping you."

She took a hesitant step, then looked at me again. "So, I'll find him here?" she clarified.

I chuckled."Oh, no. If it's really meant to be,  he will find you."

She considered that for a moment, then nodded. My respect for her rose. "Thank you." She turned and began to walk away.

"Hang on one more second," I called.

She paused, waiting.

"I need a name," I told her. When she looked confused, I added, "From you."

"name?" she challenged.

The corner of my mouth lifted. "Yes,name. And before you say anything, just be aware that the less I know of your life off this mountain, the safer you will be here. So this is your chance to take on a new name."

She grew pensive. "Nightshade."

"That is what you would like to be called?" I clarified.

Nightshade nodded firmly. "Yes."

I looked her over. "Mmm. We'll see. The dragons have a way of naming that you might like instead. But for now it will do. Welcome to the dragon territories, Nightshade."

She smiled hesitantly, then disappeared into the leaves.

I smiled a little at her retreating back. 'Nightshade.' A bit dark for such a bright young woman, but it would do.

I followed her quietly until Dapple appeared, just like I knew he would. He rumbled with pleasure and allowed her to approach and stroke his furry snout.

She smiled up at him, a real smile this time. "Hello, Elouan. Remember me?"

Uh-ooooooohhhhh

I glided over the foggy gray mists, searching for an opening. Drats. None.

I had decided that it would be a good idea to go flying that afternoon, when the clouds were low and heavy with rain. The skrills had told me they sensed no lightning when they had gone flying, so I had assumed it would be safe. But silly me, I hadn't realized that the clouds would cover the mountains completely. And now I was kind of stuck, blocked from the ground by the glistening clouds. I growled a little and kept going, hoping and hoping to find a small censored that I could slip through.

The thing is, flying into clouds is dangerous--super dangerous around mountains. You can't see through it, and the endless gray is incredibly disorienting, leaving you suspended in nothingness. I hate it, feeling like a worm squirming on a hook. But the clouds had blown in before I could land, and, well, there I was. And if I can't see the ground or the sun...which way is up? Where are the trees? Am I ten feet above the ground or one hundred?

I took a deep breath, folded my wings, and plunged softly into the gray.

The effect was immediate. The sunlight dropped away and I was floating in an endless sea. I tried to fight the bubbling panic, but it was too much. I banked and started climbing. But was I climbing? There were no landmarks to orient me. Even the light taunted me, first beckoning one way, then the other. I admit, I freaked out and just folded my wings and let myself fall. All I could do now was hope my reactions were fast enough. I'd be fine. I had to be fine. I just needed out of this trapped, helpless feeling tugging at my gut.

Nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing.

TREE! BIG SHADOWY TREE!

By some miracle I was right-side up. I snapped my wings open and barely cleared the prickly top, my foot juuust clipping the highest twig. But one of the most important things to do while flying is keep your balance.

The tiny impact knocked me to the side, and I flailed to regain control.

Nope. I was going down the hard way.

I scraped against a rough branch, forced my wings open, barely cleared another, and slammed into the ground, sliding for what seemed like forever before I stopped.

"Uhhhgggghhhh," I groaned. I didn't feel like getting up. So I didn't.

I lay there long enough for the fog to thin slightly. Groaning some more, I picked myself up and surveyed my surroundings.

Hm. It looked familiar....at least, I thought it did. I wasn't sure, but it might have been on the nothern end of my main mountain range, just underneath the Tram. I wasn't about to trust my faulty instincts, though. After all, they had already made me crash-land for the second time.

I took a deep preparatory breath. "Flicker! Come!" I paused for a few moments, ears cocked, listening. Then I repeated myself in a different direction. Pause, repeat, pause, repeat.

Finally, a tiny blur of white zipped past my ear and dug its tiny talons into my shoulder.

"Ow," I grumbled.

"You called?" He asked innocently, black eyes shining in the misty light.

I felt my annoyance and fear melt away. "Sorry to bother you. I'm lost and I don't know how to get back to the main den." The main den is where the dragons often gather. "Can you lead me back?"

"But of course." Flicker zipped up to dart in front of me, wings buzzing faster than normal in excitement. "You need to go there anyway. It's good you called for me because I was looking and I couldn't find you and I needed to find you because they asked me to and I didn't want to fail and then you called and--"

"Wait, wait," I struggled to keep up, both with his pace and conversation. "You were looking for me? Who asked for me?"

He snapped and bared his teeth in annoyance. "Those two Deadly Nadders who are always fighting are mad at each other and causing a ruckus. They wanted Oak but I couldn't find Oak so I went to get you and now I found you!"

"Oh." I rubbed my forehead and jumped over another log. Dragon spats. Normally Oak took care of that, but if he was off doing whatever it was an alpha did in his spare time, I guess I'd have to step in. "Wait, isn't there a...I don't know the word for this...a second leader? A sort of...back-up?"

"A back-up?" Flicker repeated in confusion.

I growled a bit. "A second-in-command?" I repeated in English, hoping he would understand.

Flicker hovered in front of me, tail curling and uncurling as he thought. "Oh! You mean the Heir?"

"Yes!" Of course it was Heir, why would it be anything else? I bit back my annoyance. It wasn't Flicker's fault I still didn't know every single word of Dragonese there was. "The Heir. Shouldn't they take care of it?"

"Yes."

"Well, then, why are they asking for me?"

"They asked for the Heir."

"They ask--oh." I stopped so suddenly Flicker had to double back. "You're saying...I'm the Heir?"

He cocked his head. "Yes. Who else would it be?"

"I don't know, maybe a dragon?!" Second in command?? ME? Was Oak CRAZY?

"But you are our Draconian. Our protector. You are human. This gives you power." He said it in kind of an exasperated tone, like come on, silly human, try to understand here.

I pressed my hands to my temples and sighed. "That does actually explain a few things." Like the weird look Dapple--sorry, Elouhan--gave me. And the deference the dragons showed me. The way the Flickerwings came to me with updates and potential threats. "I still think that's not a very good reason."

"You may not think so, but we disagree. Come, come, they're waiting!" The impatient little nanodragon flickered away.

I shook my head, gave a strange little laugh, and followed. I guess I couldn't have been any more wrapped up in the dragon world anyway. They just gave a name to my incredibly complicated and strange job.

The Heir. My lips couldn't help but turn up at the corners. It felt good to be wanted.

But then my smile faded. Heirs inherited things, when the current leader left. Oak, I hope you know what you're doing.

I shook the dark thoughts away and ran after Flicker, wings flapping and tail lashing to keep my balance as I leaped from branch to branch and over fallen trunks. No reason to worry. Nothing could possible happen. Not to Oak. He was too cautious to be hunted.

Eh, dragons don't communicate very well B)

No, in this fanfiction Night Furies have very acute hearing and a strange vibrations-in-the-air sense, but no echolocation. She has all the dragon limbs and stuffs but none of the instincts to interpret them.
