When you're rescued from hunters by a Night Fury, you couldn't have guessed what would happen. Or what you'd become. From Old Berk to islands afar you'll discover a new side to you, and an enemy you vaguely remember.

Inspired by a story request from RubyWolfNix on Wattpad, which turned into a kind of collaboration. She also made the brilliant cover! Ty!

•AU of the IAD series.

I take art commissions and art trades!

I can do digital and traditional drawings. Dragons from HTTYD, Dragonvale and Flight Rising are all good, and so are hybrids. Be warned though, I will not draw boulder class, nadders, scuttleclaws, deathgrippes or groncicles. I can't get their heads right. BUT, I can always have a go at them in an art trade if you want to practice something you're not too good at yet (but you will be! You will always be amazing! :D)

I CAN have a go at drawing humans, even though I'm not particularly good.

Examples can be found on my DeviantArt page.

PM me if you would like art, or I can be found on Discord at Flitt Locke#7968

I may be slow due to rl stuff, but I WILL get it done. If you want to know where you are on the list, then you can find a request list here.

Prologue - Three Years Before

You ran through the green leafed forest, branches lashing at your face, stinging it with red welts. Tree roots threatened to trip you up at every step, but the threat behind you was greater. Hunters with nets and crossbows, a mean glint in their eyes and a determined set to their jaw. They, three of them, had sprung out from the undergrowth while you were sitting at your campfire, roasting a trout over the flames. They demanded you come with them and when you refused one had sighted through the viewfinder of his crossbow, aiming right at you. You had ran, that was the only thing you could have done when your instincts told you fight or flight. You had struggled through the bushes that lined the small glade you had called your home for the past four months, then sprinted past trees of pine, oak and cedar. Deep into the forest you ran, paths that you knew so well suddenly becoming enemies in your panic. With every step you could hear the thump of boots gaining, the heavy breathing of someone who was not used to running. The bright sky only hindered your sight, flashing into your eyes when you momentarily flitted from the shadows.
Still they came, the hunters. Gaining with every second. Only ten minutes had passed, but to you and your ragged breathing it felt like a lifetime. Why were they chasing you? What had you done? Were hunters hunting people now?
Your trembling legs couldn't be trusted anymore. Your foot caught under a treacherous root, sending you flying a yard ahead. Stones that you had once toyed with cut the palms of your hands, the sharp edges tearing skin like it was paper.
The sound of a crossbow caused you to cover your head with your arms and curl up into the foetal position. Any moment now the sharp metal point would pierce you, the force of it agony. You could hear the arrow whistling through the air, sounding like a death cry of a bird.
But it never found its mark.
A blast of fire destroyed the arrow in mid flight, the heat scorching you. A dark shadow passed over you and a thump followed it, like the sound of a giant cat landing. Your E/C eyes wide you looked up at black scales and forest green eyes, feeling the vibrations of the dragon's low growl. Even in this panicked state you could tell this dragon, this Night Fury, was different.
It snarled at the hunter that was approaching and jerked its head at you, almost as if to say, “Get on.” You didn't move, your muscles frozen. It nudged you hurriedly, its eyes flicking from the hunter to you.
You glanced at the hunter, laying eyes on the crossbow she was holding, and shakily rolled into a crouch. Did you trust this dragon? It had just turned up, out of nowhere. Could it be in league with them, the hunters? The look in the hunter's eye told otherwise.
You climbed onto the Night Fury's back, your breathing quick. You had been near dragons before, Nadders, Rumblehorns, Scouldrons, Night Terrors, but never on a dragon, let alone the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself.
You were nearly flung off when the dragon turned and sprang away, only your wildly flailing arms saved you as you grabbed its ears. The Fury ran fast, a squeaking that you couldn't place following it. Dodging trees, branches, bushes. Then it leapt into a small clearing and took to the air, powerful black wings taking it and you up into the grey sky. You gingerly looked over your shoulder, hanging on tight to the dragon's ears. The hunter was standing in the clearing, the crossbow dangling from her hand, gazing up at her retreating prey with cyan irises. Now that you were out of the immediate danger your brain sparked with memory. You knew that hunter, but from where...

Yay, another Dragonblood story; and it's even a reader insert without romance! Those are so hard to find, but I love them! You did an amazing job on all the other IAD stories; I can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Thanks, and you're welcome :)

Good, clean romance stories are few and far between; I'm always excited when I come across one. Sometimes if I can't find a good story of a certain kind or topic, I just write my own  XD

Chapter One

For days, over a week, in fact, you had noticed you'd not been acting like yourself. Why, you asked yourself, were you suddenly spending more time with dragons? Why were you growling at small annoyances? Why did you like fish, when had never been keen on it before? And why, you thought as you rubbed your shoulder, was your back and shoulder aching when you had done nothing to harm them?
You watched the Night Fury approach, its iconic silhouette sharp in the grey sky. Hiccup, who, it turned out, had rescued you from hunters three years ago, had noticed your odd behaviour. He'd asked you to meet him at Raven Point, which you had warily agreed to, unsure if what he was planning. As far as you had heard he'd told the Berkians that he needed time alone, after all it had only been five months since the death of the Chief, his father, Stoick the Vast. He'd left Gobber, Valka and Astrid in charge while he was gone.
The Fury landed beside you with a thump, his green eyes happy. From his back the auburn haired man smiled and beckoned.
You smiled back and climbed on behind Hiccup. Riding a dragon wasn't new to you now, you had hitched lifts to places with other people just so you could get there quicker. A Night Fury, though, had always been your favourite dragon. So swift and agile, way better than a wobbly Gronckle or a temperamental Nightmare.
You, Hiccup and Toothless flew East away from Berk, the wind blowing in your favour. It was cold so high up near the clouds, but you hardly felt it, the thrill of flight was so overpowering. You had often had dreams of flying when you were younger, and now they were coming true.
‘So,’ Hiccup said, snapping you away from the joy of flight. ‘I've noticed you've been behaving strangely...’
You told him of the strange things you had been doing and he seemed to understand, nodded every now and then with a serious look on his fair face. It was the first time you had told anyone about it, and it was a relief to finally speak your thoughts aloud. Though you worried that the Chief would find your troubles pointless.
All he said in the end was, ‘It's full moon tonight, so you had better be prepared.’
You were confused by this at first, but then realisation dawned on you. Hiccup was a Dragonblood, having to Shift to his dragon form every full moon. Not many on Berk knew of this, but you did because of the aforementioned rescue. ‘I can't be a Dragonblood!’ You protested, yet secretly hoped you were. ‘Surely I would have known?’ A hidden dragon side? That's not something that could easily be hidden.
Hiccup smiled. ‘I never knew that I was a Dragonblood until a moon after I met Toothless...’ He told you his tale, starting from the day he met his bud to the night he first Shifted. His symptoms had been the same as yours, most notably the painful tingly ache deep in your shoulder. The more he spoke, the more the similarities piled up.
The sky began to darken before you were anywhere near the targeted island. Soon, the moon would be rising in the east, bright in the clear sky. Luckily there was a small, tree covered island less than a league away. Perfect for a hiding place.
Toothless circled it once before setting down on the beach. It seemed empty, only a few birds and Terrible Terrors to be seen. The bare, rocky hill in the centre of the island watched and loomed over you as you cooked a trout that had been in Toothless's saddle bags over the flames of a small fire. Hiccup had said there was enough time to eat before you would have to Shift.
You were nervous, finding it difficult to eat the freshly roasted fish. Yet you were excited, too. Soon, so very soon, you would be flying as a dragon over trees and land, ocean and hills. You couldn't imagine what it would be like to have wings or a tail, whole new limbs to get the hang of.
A tingle swept through you. You couldn't tell if it was nerves or something else until Hiccup stood up. ‘Here we are,’ he said, nodded towards a sliver of silver peering over the horizon. ‘Don't panic.’

                                       Some of my in game dragons: ( W. I. P. )

                                      Shuttle:

                 Age: broad wing.

                Gender: Male I think.

Description: Shuttle is my main dragon that

I use. You will most likely see me riding this dragon.

Species: Dramillion. ( Of course. )

                                    Bubbles:

                Age: broad wing.

               Gender: I forgot Ahhhhhhh.

Description: Bubbles used to be my main dragon, but I had always loved the dramillions even before I knew what race to edge was. Sadly the day that the dramillion was added to Sod we began to grow apart. Due to what once was our great bond I felt a little bad for Bubbles. That's why the dragon is here.

                                    Nerve:

                Age: broad wing.

Gender: Noooooooooooooooo guess who forgot again.... Me!

Description: Alright backstory time Nerve never fit into his ( I'm assuming ) pack of bone nappers due to having hunter stolen the rare bone from his armor. I found him searching for an area that had this bone. I wasn't sure what was happening with this bone napper until I spotted a hole in his armor I gladly searched the island for a bone to fit in here. Only to be unsuccessful. Then I had an idea to make a bit of armor for him with something that wasn't a bone. I collected some wood then found someone who could carve it. After lots of trying we finally found something that fit. I placed this wooden bone into the bone nappers armor. I decided to name him nerve because him roar sounded a little different than the others.

Species: ( isn't this obvious by now. ) Bone napper.

Alright that enough for now I'll continue later.

A quick message to the people who ha.te hackers

Yes, what hackers do is illegal, but they have a life outside of ha.cking. They probably have friends and family who see the good things in them. Now, please don't say I'm siding with the hac.kers, because that is not true. I'm just asking that you be kind to them, treat them like a real person, and don't create offencive names like HackerKiller. Yes, some of them like mr. moth have gone to far, but other people who teamed up with hac.kers before have tryed to fix their mistakes; such as tornadochaset and EpicBrid77(did I get your username right?) have tryed to fix thier mistakes. They have said sorry and have moved on, or their trying to. Please, just treat them like normal humans or at least not like abombanations. I'm getting tierd of all the hac.ker hate going around. If your mother or father went to perison, you wouldn't shame them, would you? don't shame the hac.kers for doing what they think is right. Now, I'm not saying that hac.king is right, it's very wrong, but at least treat them with some decentness. Two wrongs never make a right.

1) You want to talk about politics

2) You want an ad made for you

Hello! I'm new to the forums but have been playing SoD since 2015.

By 'new to the forums' I meen that my dad made an acount for me, but it took me ages to work that out and learn how to use the forums...

I love reading roleplays and fanfictions but have never roleplayed on a forum before. Hope to join some fun ones where I can use some of my many OCs! Fair warning: many of my OCs are highly unrealistic, even in the HTTYD world, seeing as many of them are shapeshifters. My time-zone is also awkward for roleplays, so I won't be super active and may go quiet for a time if I don't know what to do, but I'll try to be as active as possible. I might also get writer's block/RP block, so that might also cause a bit of inactivity.

Chapter Two

Your heart leapt. This was it. You were going to Shift, your whole body changing to something else entirely. What would you turn into? A Nadder? A flightmare? A Speed Stinger? There were so many dragons, any of which you could be. For all you knew, you could be a Hotburple, though you truly hoped not, those boulder classes were so slow.
Another thought hit you. Would you be able to control this dragon side? What if you couldn't and harmed Hiccup or Toothless? You wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you did that.
You took a deep breath and looked at Hiccup. He'd already Shifted, the light from the rising moon shining on his black scales. It showed up the green edges to his wings and tail and shone on his metal foot, still somehow attached. He gave you a toothless smile of encouragement as the moon rose higher.
You turned your gaze to the moon, squinting at its brightness. The ache that had been plaguing you for the past week strengthened, spreading throughout your body, making your muscles clench. You hissed in pain, agony that of which you had never felt, and hope you never felt again, burned through your whole being. Even through this pain you could feel your bones changing, muscles shifting, skin stretching. How could Hiccup stand this every time he Shifted? It was as if your soul was rebelling against you.
You thought you cried out, but you couldn't be sure. You couldn't be sure of anything at that moment except pain. That was all you could feel.
Then... It was gone. Not entirely, though, the ache was still there, nagging you. But the tremendous pain that had swept through you like a scorching wind had dissipated. You gasped at the cool air, feeling like you hadn't been breathing for a long time, and blinked at the darkness dulled colours filtering into your vision. Everything seemed brighter, sharper. So sharp, in fact, you could see an ant scuttling over a blade of grass five yards away.
You groaned and lifted your head, seeing Hiccup and Toothless staring at you amazement. Shakily, your legs trembling, you got to all fours. Well, you were a quadrupedal dragon, that narrowed it down a little. You shuffled your wings, feeling the unfamiliar weight and new muscles. It was... Weird, but exciting. This was something so new, so thrilling. Not too many people could claim they had been a dragon.
‘What?’ You asked Hiccup, surprising yourself with your Dragontongue words. How could you so suddenly understand dragon language? He just blinked in answer, his mouth slightly open. ‘What's the matter? What dragon am I?’ You tried to look back at yourself and almost cricked your neck. You had dark scales, that much you could tell.
‘Hrm,’ Hiccup said. He nodded for you to follow and turned, padding towards the beach. You stumbled after him, struggling to coordinate your limbs and tripping over your own claws. This was going to take some getting used to.
Hiccup and Toothless led you to a calm rock pool, where the water was as flat as a tabletop. The moon and the stars were reflected in it, almost as if a piece of the heavens had been pulled to Earth and laid out here, on this very beach. You walked, or more accurately, fell, to the edge of the pool and looked down at your reflection. The moonlight was so bright that you could clearly see the defining features of the species you were. Dark scales, newtlike head, long opposable ears.
    You were a Night Fury.

Chapter Three

The Dragonblood Chief started laughing; at first a low chuckle, which then grew into slightly hysterical guffaws. You and Toothless stared at him, confusion clear on both your's and the true dragon's face.
‘A Night Fury!’ Hiccup exclaimed through his giggles. ‘Of all dragons, a Night Fury!’
That night was one of the best, if strangest, nights of your life. You three Furies headed to higher ground, scrambling over fallen branches, rocks and roots. The hill you had spotted from the air seemed as high as the stars now that you were gazing up at it from the ground. Your legs trembled even more at the thought of climbing to the top of it.
You tripped over obstacles and your own feet many times, slowly getting more sure of yourself the further you went. Your muscles burned, so unused to this kind of movement were they, and you were out of breath by halfway. The moon was high in the inky sky by the time you reached the summit, its radiance shining down on you like it was lighting your path. It was so bright that the surrounding stars were obliterated from view, leaving a space of deep blue around the disc of silver.
Toothless and Hiccup showed, or in Toothless's case, mimed, what you should do and you eagerly leapt into the open air. You only got several feet before you face planted the shale, the stones scraping your scales with a chalk board screech. With your newly found scales scratched and your dignity broken, you returned to the top of the hill, where you found the other two Furies trying and failing to hide their laughter. You gave them a glare but didn't say anything, only trying to fly again and again. Over a dozen times you leapt onto the sky and came crashing down seconds later, gaining bruises to add to your collection of scratches. Who knew trees, rocks and the ground could hurt so much?
By the time the sun was beginning to lighten the sky you could glide and turn... Sort of. It was going to take a long while for you to be able to fly like the Chief. Hiccup flew beside you a lot of the time, yelling tips at you while you were frantically avoiding crashing into trees. Even though you hardly listened to him in these times, some of the information must have got through to you because slowly, so, so slowly, you got better.
As the dawn approached the three of you flopped down by the now long dead campfire you had built when in human form. Your muscles ached and you were so tired, but you couldn't stop grinning at the experience of flight. Never had you felt happier than you had at this point. All your life you had been trying to find out who you were, figure out why you seemed different from the Vikings. Yes, you had been abandoned and found on Berk, where you had been raised for the past seventeen years, and you had thought that had been the reason for the difference. Now you knew why. Your dragon side had always been there, showing through, just a little.
Contentedly you gazed at the brightening sky with sleep hazed eyes. There was the silhouette of a Silver Phantom gliding against the backdrop of grey-blue, its slow wingbeats lulling you to sleep.
Seemingly only seconds later an arrow thunked into the ground near your head, startling you from the abyss of sleep.

Chapter Four

Suddenly wide awake, you sprang up, forgetting you were a dragon and immediately tripping over your own claws. You hit the ground with a thud much like the sound the arrow had made. It was lucky you had fallen over, for another arrow whizzed only a foot above your head and buried itself into the ashes of the fire. You heard a Fury blast followed by a small shriek, and turned to see a stocky hunter sprawled face down on the ground, a crossbow his side.
‘Run!' Hiccup yelled, taking to the air. Toothless called to you and ran into the forest, his red tail fin waving like a beckoning flag. You sprinted after him as best you could, your legs untrustworthy on the uneven ground. The shouts of hunters resounded behind you, incoherent and angry. Toothless kept looking back at you, urging you faster; but you could not run any faster, you were still getting used to this reptilian form of yours.
Above you came blasts that echoed through the dawn. Evidently Hiccup was trying to knock the hunters out. Their pounding footsteps still came, though, so he couldn't have succeeded.
An arrow thwacked into a tree ahead of you, its shaft vibrating from the force with which it was fired. You swerved to the right while Toothless leapt left, vanishing into the twilight. Despite yourself, panic rose; this was just like when you had been hunted before, running through the forest with hunters tracking you down. Except this time you didn't know the geology of the land and your body refused to cooperate.
You heard a flap of wings and a net thumped to the ground beside you, missing you by a hand's width. You leapt away from it and into some bushes, shutting your eyes against the sharp twigs that lashed your face. You opened them again in time to see you were headed right for a trap, one of those that snaps shut like a Red Death's jaws on unsuspecting dragons. You spread your wings just a little and managed to glide over it, fear not even having time to take hold. You landed on the other side of the trap and stumbled away, but not before and arrow whistled down and hit the trap, springing it on your tail.

FANDOMS

Ordered by preference, of course

(used to be top ten, but I have too many things that I love!)

HTTYD books/movies

(obviously, but I HAD to put that in there, it really is my favorite)

The books were SO GOOD. No swearing, no (extreme) violence (does getting eaten by a lava dragon that dives into a volcano count? Or Grimbeard the Ghastly killing his own son?) Okay, scratch the violence, but it really is pretty awesome. The characters are SO well put together, each with his or her own little quirks that make them unique, and they’re all (mostly) lovable in their own way (Alvin and Exellinor are irredeemable). The little lessons Cressida Cowell teach by inserting them into the plot are truly inspired. Can’t wait for her to write more!!! (Also, I love the quirky way she capitalizes random words to make them a little bit more important. It’s just funny to me.)

I'll leave off mentioning all the characters of the movies, because you guys know them all aready! But you may not know the Heroes who came first...

First (of course), Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

Rather a longish name for a smallish Viking. Hiccup is a member of the Hairy Hooligan tribe. He has bright red hair and about a million freckles. the series starts when he's ten-and-a-half, and progresses until he is fifteen and King of the Wilderwest. His best (and, for a few books, ONLY friend) is Fishlegs.

Fishlegs is scrawny, allergic to reptiles, pretty much scared of everything, and the only sane one of the group (well, the only sane one when Hiccup is making a Plan). But he's fiercely loyal to Hiccup, and a good deal stronger and braver than he thinks.

Next is Camicazi, who's a little too brave and fierce.

She's a Bog-Burglar, a member of an all-girls tribe of people who, well, burgle things. She is a very accomplished thief and a master escape artist.

Narnia

Second in the fandom world is--you guessed it--Narnia. I have loved this world since before even HTTYD, I think. Though I'm not quite ready to meet Alsan, I would love to slip through the wardrobe for a few days--or years.

The False Prince

OH MY GOSH THIS IS AMAZING!!!

Okay.

So the story is set in a medieval world in the land of Carthya. It's about an orphan named Sage. The storyline is great, the main character (Sage) is very well-rounded, believeable, and goes through some great character growth (not to mention he's snarky and smart and super funny). I LOVED it, and it's seriously amazing. If you read it, you will NOT be disappointed! (P.S. If you're one of those people who likes to read the end first, don't. Trust me, it's worth it to wait)

Artemis Fowl

OH MAI GAWSH I LOVE THIS SERIES. Artemis' gradual arc and his heists and jokes (on the rare occasion he demonstrates a sense of humor) are just the best thing EBER. ALSO! Holly Shory is the best LEPrecon to ever wear a set of wings. (Also if you wanna see an incredibly imaginative and accurate crossover fanfic about the Avengers meeting Artemis Fowl, this is where it's AT!) But don't watch the movie, ooohhh no. Disney still needs to apologize for giving a perfectly written anti-hero morals. The audacity!

The Magic Thief/The Lost Books/Sarah Prineas in general

The Magic Thief: MY PRECIOUS LITTLE CHARACTERS I WILL PROTECT YOOOOUUUUU!!!

I LOVE this series, it ended far too quickly for me (maybe cause I read it all in one day, hmmmmm). Connwaer and the magic and all of it are just so HILARIOUS and EXHILIRATING and FRUSTRATING to read about and STOP BLOWING THINGS UP, CONNWAER!!!

The Lost Books: MORE! MORE! I NEED MORE! (Seriously, when does the next book come out?)

Anyway, it’s about Alex, a librarian, and Kenneret, a queen, and her brother Charlie. Oh, and the books are alive (that’s enough to make any bookworm hyperventilate with happiness, isn’t it? ;D )

Dragonfell: YESYESYES THIS IS WHAT IT IS TO BE A DRAGON!!....ahem.

Attention to all the dragon-touched: This is a must-read. Go. Read it.

The Silver Eye

This is an INCREDIBLE webcomic by one Laura Hollingsworth (also the only webcomic/comic I have ever read, BUT STILL). The world is beautiful, the characters are funny and awesome (Apen and Joe are my favorites), and the art is incredible! It uploads a page EVERY FRIDAY and the story is so good!

Keeper of the Lost Cities

"Team Foster-Keefe will always be cooler."--Keefe

....

Yup, couldn’t have said it better myself. Team Foster-Keefe all the way! I have read Legacy and it was...what I expected (-_-) BUT UNLOCKED (Keeper book #8.5) looks so exciting! Can't wait!! 8D

Maleficent

ALL HAIL THE MISTRESS OF ALL EVIL, MASTER OF MAGIC AND ALL FAERIES UNDER HER REALM!!

...and birds. And wicked-looking staffs. And cute little blondies called Beastie.

Wasn't a fan of her outfit for like 90% of Maleficent 2 but the rest of it was great! Better than a certain movie I could mention *cough*TheHiddenWorld*cough*.

Wizards of Once

*anxiously jittering about the Unknown Narrator*
*casually stressing about Xar's Witchblood stain*
*hopelessly shipping Xar and Wish when Bodkin is probably going to get the girl*

Dwight in Shining Armor

I get a kick out of this every time I hear Dwight's shriek in the intro. BYUTv is the best!...at making things funny, clean, and SUPER awkward. But it's still great.

Story Thieves

My favorites are actually Kiel and Owen. No girls this time around, which is really unusual for me. But these two are special. Hope they have all the adventures they can imagine...and maybe a few safer ones.

The Ever Afters (EAS)

This series is pretty good. Aurora--excuse me, RORY Landon is so gutsy and flawed and lovable and I love her.

Brave (Merida)

Just gotta say, I LOVE this girl. Best Disney princess ever. Also--this isn't really related to the movie but it IS technically part of the franchise so imma say it anyway--her accent is gold. I friggin LOVE Scotland and the accent and the culture and lore and landscape and language and--okay, gushing aside, the point of this mini-rant is that I loved Merida in Wreck-it-Ralph 2. It was also the only thing I loved in Wreck-it-Ralph 2.

Chapter Five

You screeched from the pain, the teeth of the trap ripping through your tail fins, snapping a couple of phalanges. It was such a strong trap that not even your dragon strength could have parted those metal jaws. You looked back, twisting your head right round so your neck clicked, and saw the hunter who had shot the trap. She was perched on the back of a red and white Silver Phantom, her brown hair tied back in a rough ponytail that danced in the breeze. Her cyan gaze met yours, cold eyes mesmerising you. You knew this hunter, you had seen her before, and not just those few years ago. She was so deeply familiar, engrained in your consciousness somewhere. Buried far back in time.
A purple-blue plasma blast scorched between you and the Phantom rider, decimating the trap. You were flung away by the blast, the temporary flames singeing your scales and pieces of sharp metal battered down on you. The end of your tail screamed in pain, even more so when you hit the rocky ground with a thud.
Hiccup swooped down through the smoke and landed beside you, hurriedly pushing you to your feet. ‘Go,’ he said, not so gently nudging you away. ‘Go!’ You didn't need prompting again. You leapt away into the forest, pain and fear making you fast. You only tripped up a couple of times, your claws catching on roots and stones. You almost ran into Toothless when he shot out of a thick patch of trees. He dodged you and ran beside you as best he could through the thinning trees, his breath coming in pants.
‘Shift to human!’ You heard Hiccup yell down from just above the tops of the trees.
‘How?!’ You shouted back, your voice higher than you would want to admit.
‘Will yourself in to human form!’ He replied. ‘Remember what—’ he paused to fire a blast back the way they'd come. ‘—What it feels like to be a human! How different it is from this form!’
You willed your thoughts to stray from the danger and focus on the human side of you, trying to feel what is was like to be a clumsy person. Your form wouldn't Shift at first; it was determined to stay in your newfound reptilian body. What if you couldn't Shift? What if the dragon side was taking over like you had feared? Fear began to rise higher, but then a familiar aching tingle swept through you, making you shiver, and you found yourself face down on the ground in human form. Toothless skidded to a halt and helped you up, urging you to get on. You couldn't understand his words now, but it was clear enough what he meant. Hiccup dropped down from tree branches above and pulled you onto the saddle, your limbs trembling to much from your exertions to be able to control properly. He leaped up in front of you and hooked his metal foot into the stirrup, growling something to Toothless in Dragontongue. The Night Fury shot straight up, branches cracking around you. He was just a dark blur in the dawn sky.
You looked back in search of the hunter and found her below, crouched on the back of the Phantom. Its ragged edged, large wings were not designed got fast flight and it soon fell behind, the hunter glaring after you as the Fury disappeared into the low cloud. Those cold eyes haunted you as you sat in silence, only Toothless's wingbeats disturbing your racing mind.

Chapter Six

You were all silent on the first part of the journey back to Berk. None of you could find anything reassuring to say. The events of that night had transpired so fast, so dramatically. Only hours after leaving your adoptive island you had found your dragon side, watched the full moon rise, practiced flying and been hunted. It was all so thrilling, and painful, apparently, to be a Dragonblood.
The hunter, though; her face was so familiar. Those sharp eyes boring into you, haunting you. Your mind knew her, but you did not, and you couldn't work out why.
You asked Hiccup if he knew her or the other hunters. After a moment's pause he said he did, that he'd run into them before. On the rare times he'd encountered them they had always gone for him and not Toothless or any other dragons around, always him. He'd come to the conclusion that these hunters only hunted Dragonbloods, though how they knew he was one he did not know.
They stayed in tense silence the rest of the way back, expecting at any second for the red and white Phantom to drop from the sky. Of course, it wouldn't have been able to keep up with the Night Fury, but imagination sometimes overrode logic.
The wind picked up a little in the grey sky, foreshadowing a summer storm in a few days time. You loved storms, especially the ones with lightning but no rain, and you always stood out in them no matter what other people said to stop you. Now you'd be able to fly in them... Or not. The pain of your injured tail shot up your spine, reminding you that it could be quite serious. That you may not be able to fly again.
As you neared the Isle if Berk you noticed Hiccup was still in hybrid form. You tapped his wing and he looked back, apparently oblivious to the fact that he had wings. ‘Wings away,’ you said. He looked at you blankly for a moment before realising what you meant and Shifting to his human form, black wings melting away. You were still amazed at how the dragon side hid itself.
Instead of landing in full view of the population of the island, Toothless alighted on the grass behind the Chief's hut. Several Vikings waved to him; after all, you couldn't miss a black dragon that was the only known individual of its kind with two people on its back. Hiccup waved back but did not deign to answer their queries, too wrapped up in his thoughts he was.
You and Toothless followed him into the hut, finding Gobber bending over the fire trying to roast a couple of small salmon on a spit. He straightened up when he heard the door creak and waved a greasy pair of tongs at you. ‘Hallo there! Thought you might be hungry when you got back, so I made... This.’ He wafted his hand at the surprisingly delicious looking fish. ‘You the young Dragonblood?’
You nodded, eyeing the fish. You hadn't eaten since the night before and after the eventful, weird night you were starving.
‘Where's my mother and Fishlegs?’ Hiccup asked, glancing at the fish. You could tell he wanted to get stuck into it, but was holding back until more important matters were taken care of.
Gobber didn't know, so Hiccup momentarily Shifted to his hybrid form and growled to Toothless, who was already halfway out the door with seemingly the same idea. The Chief stretched his wings before changing back to human.
While they were both distracted, you took one of the fish before it was burnt to cinders.

***

Quite soon Toothless had come back to the hut with Valka and Fishlegs in tow. Both the Chief's mother and his friend were understandably worried, watching him with frowns as he paced, skewered fish in hand, on the other side of the fire pit. He told them what had happened since you'd left the day before, with snippets from you contributing to the picture. There seemed so much for a single night, crammed into a few small hours. You almost told them about you knowing the lead hunter a couple of times, but you bit the words back and decided this was not the right time. Eventually, when all was told and the story was finished, Hiccup left with only the words, ‘I'm going to tell Gothi.’ Soon after, Fishlegs and Gobber departed with the intention of checking the defences, leaving you and Valka alone in the hut. You bit your tongue when she looked at you. You knew she had seen you wanting to say something when Hiccup was talking, and you also knew she wasn't going to leave it be.
Without really thinking it through, you blurted out that you knew the hunter, the words coming out in the wrong order. You blushed and repeated what you'd tried to say, slower and in the correct order this time.
Valka came over and put her arm around your shoulders, ever the protective Stormcutter. ‘We'll sort it,’ she said.

Chapter Seven

A ceiling could be extraordinarily interesting, you decided. The swirls of the grain and knots were like your thoughts, chaotic and whirling. Even in your dreams you had not had much rest, the avatar of the hunter coming after you every time you closed your eyes. Why did you know her? She must have had some involvement in your childhood, but you couldn't find a memory of what.
You had stayed in the Chief's hut most of the morning before wandering into the forest. The crowds had been too much for you to face so you had used the back door, sneaking away like a smug Terrible Terror with a prized fish. Of course, there were a few Vikings who had seen you and waved cheerily. You had waved back halfheartedly, not in the mood for social interactions. Your feet had taken you to the cove, the place Hiccup had first befriended the Night Fury. It was peaceful there, so quiet, with only the twittering of the birds and the occasional roar of a dragon in the distance. This was the place you came to when you wanted to be alone.
You had stayed there until the sky began to darken. Surprised at how quickly the time had passed, you'd headed back to the village of Berk and made your way to your house, a small wooden hut tucked away in a corner. Once there you had eaten just about all the dried meat you had and fallen asleep with your boots on. Dreams had haunted you, nightmares, even. You had woken several times during the night with your skin slick with sweat.
It was early morning now, the sunlight seeping in through the window. Everything it touched had a golden glow, very much opposing your strange mood. You couldn't tell what you were feeling, not truly. Everything was too jumbled. Curiosity, anxiety, nervousness, thirst for knowledge, it was all there, among other feelings you couldn't decipher.
A knock at the door startled you. A quick thumping, loud enough to wake a sleeping Hotburple. You sighed and swung your feet to the wooden floor, wincing at the pain in your back and noticing the boots you had forgotten to take off. It was too early for most visitors, and you wondered who in Thor's name it could be as you walked to the door. Root, perhaps, playing a prank on everyone?
You yawned and opened the door, quickly putting your hand over your mouth when you realised it was rude. Before you stood the Chief, his forest green eyes wide. He waved a scrap of parchment at you and you followed it with your gaze, trying to discern what it was, before snatching it from him. In smudged charcoal large, scratchy words were written, saying, “BRING THE YOUNG DRAGONBLOOD AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE OLD HAG IN EXCHANGE.”
You looked at the message, then at Hiccup. The young Dragonblood must have been you, you had been called that enough times yesterday. The hag? Gothi, it had to be. Who else could be described as such?
You flung the paper at Hiccup and rushed to the kitchenish area of your hut, grabbing your satchel from the back of a chair. You stuffed half a loaf of bread into it, along with a waterskin and your notebook.  With the bag slung over your shoulder you jogged back to the door, finding Hiccup blocking the way.
‘Nope,’ he said, standing firmly. ‘You're staying here.’
‘Oh, come on,’ you said, trying to push past. For such a skinny Viking, he was quite strong. ‘You showed me the message, did you really think I'd stay put?'
Hiccup smiled wryly. ‘Not really, but I hoped. I just wanted to let you know that she knows where we are.’
You stopped tugging at the Chief's arm, which he had stretched across the doorway. You hadn't thought of anything like that. That the hunters could find you on Berk, possibly even attack you. Your home no longer felt safe.
    ‘I'm still coming,’ you said.
Hiccup didn't move from his barring position. ‘No. Stay here, out of immediate danger.’
You stepped back and looked him in the eyes. ‘I'm coming, even if that means Shifting in public and flying after you.’
    ‘You're serious, aren't you?’
    You nodded.
Hiccup sighed and stood back. ‘Just... Stay out of trouble, please?’
You gave him a grin that did nothing to encourage what he'd said.

***

Dark Deep. That was where you headed. It had been stated at the bottom of the note to meet at Dark Deep on a beach, which was helpful when there were many beaches. You, Hiccup and Toothless left the Isle of Berk before most Vikings were stirring, yet again leaving Valka, Gobber and Astrid in charge. It was a long flight to get there, around five hours, was your estimate. To pass the long hours Hiccup coached you on how to Shift, telling you as much as he knew. It was more a mental thing, you found, rather than physical. Thoughts had power, they could change you if you let them. And you did. It took a while, and a lot of concentration, but eventually you willed yourself to hybrid form. The tingle that signified Shifting had lessened now, your body becoming used to this strangeness. Within an hour you could Shift between hybrid and human without too much difficulty.
You wanted to try flying in hybrid form, but both Hiccup and the Night Fury warned you not to. Your wings would still be weak. You argued that you may need to be able to fly in this form, especially if you couldn't in dragon form, as a twinge in your back reminded you. Without much of a good comeback, they relented.
Toothless flew as steadily as he could and you crouched on his back, looking down at the waves far, far below. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea... Before more treacherous thoughts could enter your mind you spread your wings, almost whacking Hiccup, and sprang off. You yelled and windmilled your arms, forgetting you had wings until they caught the air. You tried to level out and found yourself gliding, but still going down.
‘Flap!’ Hiccup called from above. ‘And angle your wings up a little!’
You did as he said, putting beforehand practice into action. You dipped lower at first, your heart skipping. What if you couldn't fly yet? What if your wings couldn't hold you up like the Chief had said? With more vigour you flapped, muscles straining, and saw the Night Fury getting closer. You thought they'd come down to help you, but then you noticed Hiccup grinning and giving you a thumbs up. You looked to the sea below and, to your astonishment, you were higher. You could fly!

Chapter Eight

You sighted the beach long before you saw the people on it. The island of Dark Deep was craggy, spires of rock reaching for Valhalla high above. The dark stone which gave it its name was stark against the noon sky. The beach, or the first one one you came across, was made up of dark sand and littered with black, lavalike pebbles. It was hemmed in by jagged stones protruding from the sea bed, intent on ripping any approaching vessel to shreds. As you neared you could make out the Silver Phantom on the beach, its wings hunched and head down. To its right were two guards dressed in leather armour, and in between them stood Gothi, her staff still in her hand. The lead hunter stood before them, waiting with her arms crossed.
Toothless landed on the sand several yards away from the hunters, his lime green eyes fixed on them. Only the two nearby Gronckles growled in response to these newcomers arriving. You hopped down from the dragon's back and made your way over to the strange person, Hiccup striding alongside you.
‘So you came,’ she said, not moving from her patch of sand.
‘Evidently,’ you muttered. Hiccup gave you a look as if to say, “Shut up or you're gonna get us k.illed,” which was probably rightly so.
The hunter looked at the Chief with cyan eyes, searching his features for any clues as to what he was like. ‘You're Chief Hiccup?’ She asked.
Hiccup nodded. It wasn't unusual that she knew who he was. He was known far and wide for taming dragons and riding a Night Fury.
She turned to you, scanning you with the same intensity she had done with Hiccup. ‘You're Y/N?’
‘How do you know my name?’ You all but spluttered. You were sure you had never mentioned or heard your name around her.
The hunter ignored you. ‘I'm Jeger Rykaina. Glad you came, otherwise capturing her would have been for nothing.’ She jabbed a thumb at Gothi, who gave her a death glare.
Hiccup growled quietly and didn't bother hiding it. ‘Let her go.’
‘Why would I let my bargaining chip go?’ Jeger snorted. She motioned for the two hunters to bring the elder forward.
‘She's not yours to bargain with,’ Hiccup told the hunter defiantly, an underlying threat haunting his voice.
‘No,’ she admitted to your surprise. ‘But (s)he is.’ She pointed at you, her hand held steady.
    ‘No I'm not,’ you protested.
Jeger smiled. ‘Oh, you are. Come here.’ She beckoned with a scarred finger, so sure that you would go to her.
    You didn't move.
‘Don't be stupid,’ the hunter growled, almost like a dragon herself. ‘Come her and your old woman can can go free without harm.’
You looked at Gothi, her small stature making her seem like a fireworm beside a Goregutter. One hunter was holding onto her arm and the other held the top of the staff, preventing her from giving them a good whack like she had with Gobber many times. You could see she wouldn't be able to outfight experienced hunters, even with her Terrorlike speed, and you doubted you would be getting out of here without a scrap if you didn't do as Jeger said. Besides, what were you worth next to the tribe's only healer?
You knew you shouldn't, but you stepped towards the beckoning hand, seeing the hunters lips twitch with a smile. In an instant you knew you had made the wrong choice. Jeger was devious, you could infer that from just the few minutes you had spent in her company, she wouldn't just let her bargaining chip go, as she'd put it. At least, though, you might be able to distract her long enough for your friends to get away.
Your step faltered a little and the hunter reached out to grab your arm on seeing this, but a strong arm pulled you away, out if her reach. You looked back at the Dragonblood Chief and he shook his head, gently releasing you. ‘I came to get Gothi back and I am going to get her back, with Y/N here coming back home.’
‘(S)he is home,’ Jeger said quietly. You and Hiccup looked at each other. What did she mean by that? ‘(S)he is staying here,’ the hunter said more loudly. She was evidently trying to cover up what she'd said, which made you all the more curious.
‘Why are you doing this?’ Hiccup asked. You had noticed over the years that this was his go to question when faced with someone he didn't understand. When the hunter didn't reply he leant closer and hissed, low enough so that the other two would not hear. ‘Why hunt your own kind?’
Jeger pulled back slightly, her eyes narrowed. ‘Our dragon sides are monsters,’ she growled. ‘They are nothing but killers.’
Silently you looked between the Chief and the hunter. How had he known she was a Dragonblood? You studied her but you couldn't find anything that gave it away.
Hiccup shook his head sadly, his auburn hair flopping in his eyes. ‘I once thought like that, not so long ago,’ he said. ‘It almost tore me apart. Please, don't think like that, Jeger.’
The lead hunter gazed at him, as if she was thinking through what he'd said. You could imagine the cogs of thought turning in her mind, and for a moment your hopes rose. Maybe she had seen sense?
Then she began laughing, a hollow chuckle that sent your spirits plummeting. ‘You think you can change my mind?’ She said, stepping away from them. The three of you growled, dread seeping into your souls. ‘You are wrong.’

Chapter Nine

Jeger snapped her fingers at the Silver phantom, a smile on her face. The dragon lunged forwards with as much speed as a Speed Stinger, red and white scales glinting in the morning light. Its sharp teeth were bared in a nasty grin, ready to slice. None of you had time to react, you hadn't thought Phantoms could move at such a speed. In moments it was only inches away, and in another moment it had reared up and flung its head back, trying to rid itself of the grey Terrible Terror that was clinging over its eyes and screeching so it couldn't hear. The two hunters who had had a hold of the elder were now left with her staff and a confused expression, but no Gothi.
Without thinking you Shifted to your hybrid form, dragon instincts prevailing. If you had to fight to protect, then you would.
Hiccup grabbed your arm and towed you back, clambering on to the flight ready Night Fury while still holding onto you. You growled and climbed up after him, shaking his hand away as Toothless fired a warning blast at the Phantom's feet. Through the screeching of the red and white dragon you heard a cracked voice yelling for you to go, to fly. Toothless shot straight up, his wings whacking the ground and raising a cloud of sand in their wake. You looked down just before the clouds swallowed you and saw the Terror darting from person to person, dragon to dragon, confusing them with her speed. You drifted in the cloud, tense, alert, almost certain that the hunters would be on you any moment. You nearly fell off of the Fury when Gothi emerged from the light greyishness, her wooden staff in her claws. It was longer than her and must have been heavy for such a small dragon. In silence you all glided along in the cloud, away from the Dragonblood hunters. Away from the familiar Jeger.
You must have gone a mile out when suddenly Toothless and Gothi dove sharply down. You hung on to Hiccup's shoulders and tucked your wings close to your body, watching the sea approaching all too quickly. With expert skill the dragon and Dragonblood swerved up and followed the shape of the waves, spray splattering your face with salty droplets of water. You blinked them away and spied the other side of Dark Deep ahead, growing with every wingbeat. You leaned close to the Chief so he would be able to hear you over the roar of the wind and ocean. ‘What are we doing?’
Hiccup called back to you, his words flying over his shoulder. ‘We're going to follow them.’

Chapter Ten

‘I'm sorry,’ Hiccup said, rocking back into a crouch. He met your gaze sadly. ‘It's not going to heal well.’
You looked down at your disfigured tail fins and sighed. Not only was the membrane torn, but the phalanges were broken in places and some felt dislocated. It hurt like a Gronckle's lava had been poured over your tail while still hot, scorching through scales to the nerves beneath. Evidently you wouldn't be flying again for quite a while, if ever. And you had just been learning to fly, too.
A thought struck you then, one that you couldn't believe you hadn't thought of before. Other dragons didn't need tail fins, they found enough balance with just their tails, so why did Night Furies? You voiced this thought to Hiccup and he looked back at you blankly, a crease forming on his forehead as he pieced together what you were planning.
‘Evolution, I suppose,’ Toothless replied. ‘We evolved to use tail fins and now we rely on them to fly.’
You grunted a thanks to him. You knew Hiccup wouldn't like what you were about to do, but you had an argument ready if he tried to stop you. You stood and walked to the edge of the ledge you were all hiding out on, the dark sea churning on hidden rocks below. It was quite a drop, but at least you had your hybrid form to fall back on if your theory failed.
Hiccup had stood up by now and was slowly making his way over to you, just like he would if he was approaching a nervous Stormcutter. ‘No, Y/N, don't.’
‘When have you ever listened that?’ Toothless snickered.
    ‘True,’ Hiccup said.
‘I need to be able to fly,’ you told him. ‘I can't rely on my hybrid forever. If I can at least fly a little, just enough to evade danger, in my dragon form then it's better off for everyone. Don't say you wouldn't do the same thing, I've heard how rebellious you can be. Please, let me do this. It may save our lives.’
Hiccup huffed and chewed his lip. His logical mind knew you were right. He Shifted to his dragon form and held his wings ready for flight. ‘Very well,’ he said to you.
You grinned a thanks and turned your attention to the drop, feeling the air currents with your wingtips. With a gulp you let yourself fall from the ledge, wings spread wide and tail fins useless. Your heart seemed to leap into your throat as you plummeted down. You angled your wings like you had been taught, gliding along but still nearing the waves below you. Flapping didn't help in the least, it only pushed you off balance. In disappointment you Shifted to your hybrid form and flapped back up to the ledge, still unsteady in the air. After a minute to regain your breath you tried again, then again, then again. It must have been at least twenty tries at flight before you found something that worked. By angling your wings slightly more upwards you discovered that it kept you level. Several more goes after that and you could even fly upwards and turn.
You knew you would never be as good as other Furies, and in one way it saddened you. But you could fly at least, and the joy of this revelation outweighed any misery at that moment in time.

FLIGHT yayay

Oh I never considered that before... wHY dO onLy furies depende so heavily on tail fins? Like sure other dragons have them but they aren't as crucial or whatever.
Speaking of fins.. why do they have extra wing sets? For looks I suppose?

I suppose it's for balance and turning. If you've ever watched a hawk flying them you'll notice how much they use their tail. Though two sets?! Greedy Furies XD

Plains have tail fins... XD

I have wondered before, could a Fury fly if it lost both tail fins? If it only loses one, the remaining fin still creates lift and unbalances the dragon; but without any fins it would still be balanced, although the tail might create a little more drag.

Aw poor Dragonblood

Do Dragonbloods have tails in hybrid form? I can't remember....but glad to know they can fly again! Even if they'll never be quite as agile again.
