I really like the story about httyd and everything that belong to it, actually I am a great fan of dragons in generally. However I wonder which time Hiccup are living in. I mean, in the school and the franchise, but also the book.
In the School of Dragons they have shieldmaiden, which in the history belong after year 1200 although the Asatru with Oden and Tor was active during the year 750 - 1050 ac. After that, the christianity become the common faith. The term Jarl was removed around year 1300.
Every thoughts are welcome, thank you!

I see where you are going with this but....

This is a work of fiction based on a kid's novel series with fictional species and landmasses.

The timeline for scientific discoveries is beyond completely wrong.

It doesn't take place in any real corrolational setting.

The thing is...

What's funny is that SoD has been jumpy with it's timeline, too. First, it was based on Dragons: RoB, then it moved to Race to The Edge, and now it's on HTTYD2.

1010-1015 in the Franchise; Got 600 Years to Pick From in Books

The "Dragon-Viking Games Vignettes" that DreamWorks posted online as promotion for the first film (link here; will open in a new tab) state that the games (which seem to take place not long after the first film) take place in the year 1010. And this does match some of the more historically accurate things we see in the HTTYD movie franchise. Due to the fact that the movies take place during the "Viking Age," the architecture has been Christianized but the culture and religion has not been Christianized, and the fact that stirrups exist, HTTYD fits bests somewhere between 970 A.D. to 1050 A.D., which 1010 A.D. comfortably falls halfway between. And if the first film takes place in 1010, this would mean the second film takes place in the year 1015.

As for the books...that's a bit looser. Cressida Cowell admitted up front that she didn't want to place Hiccup in any particular time, hence why she put "the last Viking hero" up against the Roman Empire, despite the fact that these two things should be nearly 600 years apart. So as long as you put the HTTYD book series sometime between 400 A.D. and 1065 A.D., you're as "accurate" as you're going to get.

That said, in both forms, HTTYD has a lot of historically inaccurate things which the creators of each were aware of, and a lot of times that inaccuracy is intentional. So for both the movies and the books, we're allowed to be loose about the time placing.

Weirdly enough, the movie franchise ended up being a lot more historical accurate than the books in nearly every way (except for the fact that the franchise replaced Yule, which is in the books, with Snoggletog and put yaks on an island in the Norwegian Sea. ...I still don't understand either of these decisions. Yule is literally what modern Christmas is based on, why would you make up a holiday when you already had THE HOLIDAY right there, and yaks live in the freaking HIMALAYAS, so wh--) *clears throat* Anyway...yeah. The movies are usually more accurate.

Edit: You should know that the existence of historical shieldmaidens at all is a hotly debated topic. Most archaeologist are now leaning toward the side of, "No, shieldmaidens didn't actually exist, and women 'warriors' were more likely seen magic-casters." Others still firmly in the camp of there being shieldmaidens. So we can't really confirm whether or not they existed.

I Think You Meant :Historically Accurate"

No one is saying that the game (and movie franchise accompanying it) being historically inaccurate is a bad thing. Like I said, the inaccuracy is often intentional and meant to give us a lose time-frame within which to place our little fantasy adventure. People are just curious how it might correlate to real history, and so I helped provide that context to try to help answer the question posed in this thread.

And I think what you mean is "historically accurate," not "scientifically accurate." It is actually very important that the game be scientifically accurate because the entire point of the game is to teach science to children. It's an educational game, with each quest meant to teach a new scientific concept.

Yule is the Anglicized

Yule is the Anglicized version of the same word. Both spellings are valid. But you're right, if I were to spell it the Scandinavian way, it would be Jul. :)

Okay!

In that case, Yule can be used too, as long as it means the same thing, right? ;)

Ja, jag kan prata svenska (yes, i can speak Swedish)

Do you mean me or Whisper? I'm a bit confused. But if you were talking about me, then i have to say that i'm studying Swedish at school, because i live in Finland which is next to Sweden, and i've also been many times in Sweden, i hope i could go next year to Norway. I'm kinda interested in vikings and other Scandinavian things. And my best friends father is Norse. I'm not an expert in Swedish language but at least i know the main things and i can maybe start a lil conversation.

Fantasy and inspiration

Hi Sockless!

I am aware about that the story is not true, although you must have notice that they use terms from the reality and also they don't seem to have another language. The book and the franchise is therefore most likely inspired by the reality from some time, as for most of the stories ever made. If they were not they need all new terms and even new creatures to avoid too much sci-fiction.
I hope this clear things up.
Have a nice week

Jas

What Whisper said. (Actually

What Whisper said. (Actually I didn't know some of the HTTYD trivia!)

I think its nice to get an idea about the time frame HTTYD is loosely taking place in. It is especially helpful if you are writing or Role-playing and want to bring a few bits of realism to it. And interest in HTTYD Vikings and their lives can lead to an interest in actual historical information. You can learn something :)  That's always a plus!
