I'm on vacation! Yay! My family and I drove 16 hours to get to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It's fun here, a bit too hot for my weird taste, but very fun nonetheless. And of course, who wouldn't welcome a week off from school? Not me!

Ok, so yesterday I went to the beach. It was super, super low tide, so the ocean had gone down basically as far as it could go. Unfortunately, this meant that the majority of the beach was sand. A short trip to the store later, I have flip flops, and though I still hate sand, it's much better than wearing sneakers and socks.

I'm taking a walk on the shore, and in the sand there's a perfect, completely intact shell. Huge, too. I wash it off in a tide pool, and it starts to move.  This happens four more times, until my hand is completely filled with squirming shells.

I'm still not completely sure what these little guys are called, but since they live in shells, in the sea, and look like snails, I have called them sea snails.

Look at the cuties!

From left to right, we have Flip, Scurvy, (Captain) Jack, and Leek.

Unfortunately, I had to throw them back in the ocean, because our rental house does not have the capabilities to take care of four sea snails.

I KNOW, RIGHT?

Wow, I never thought I'd be fangirling over snails, of all things...

Now I know I'm not supposed to pick favorites, so shh. No telling 'em. Leek is my favorite, 'cause he's the most active and the smallest, so he's the baby; followed by Captain Jack, because, well, Jack. Then Flip, who's the biggest and the 'daddy', and I'm sorry, Scurvy, but, well, you're boring. You don't do much. I love you too, but playing dead does not make you the most interesting snail in the world, I'm sorry.

Be careful, love. All species of cone snails {the kind you're holding} actually shoot venomous harpoons out of their mouth. They're like little hypodermic needles. They use the harpoons to paralyze prey, since they're carnivorous. It attacks the nervous system and even the smallest amount can shut down your body. Also, about 100 of the different toxin components in the venom are highly poisonous to humans. General rule of thumb- the larger the cone, the more dangerous it is. The ones you have would be more like being bit by a large house spider, but still. I'd prefer if you didn't handle them again, haha.

Just a warning.
They're cute but super dangerous.
Look, don't touch.

Wow, really? Yikes, that doesn't sound fun XD

Well, then, I guess 'snail-saving' won't be on my list of things to do next time we go to the beach, haha. Funny, though, none of these guys seemed particularly interested in biting. My dad actually poked the antenna (which was probably a supremely horrible idea now that I know this, lol) and all that happened was the antenna shrinking back like a slug's would.

EDIT: Just looked these up, apparently they're a species of snail called the lettered olive. None of the articles I saw, however, said anything about venom or stinging, or even listed it in the cone snail family.

Here's a pic I found off Google:

Cone snails do look a heck of a lot like that though. Maybe it's one of those harmless speacys that ether happens to look like or has evolved to look like a dangerous one things. On this note if you ever visit Australia you would never want to touch something with a shell like that there. That's where one of the nastiest cone snails live and it can k.ill a grown man in minutes. That speacys isn't where you are of course so don't get too freaked out but knowing about the really deadly ones kind of ruins the cuteness of these harmless ones for me. I can't not think of them any time I see a snail with the same shell shape. I don't even know why it freaks me out to the extent that it does. Watching videos of deadly snakes doesn't make me afraid of the harmless ones even if they look similar but these?.....Yup.

Well, I'm no biology expert, but I'm not so sure that olive snails and cone snails are related other than the fact that they're both snails, obviously. I have discovered one thing though: lettered olive snails are probably some of the most boring species in existence. Really, the only interesting thing I could find about them is that they're the state shell of South Carolina. That's something, I guess :D

Freaked out by an animal? That is not me XD I'd probably still coo over the kind that could kill me... from a safe distance, of course!

I didn't say they were related. I said they LOOK similar. Looking similar doesn't always mean related. On this note. Fun fact. The big fruit bats aren't actually that closely related to the smaller micro bats (you know the ones that usually eat bugs but not always). By which I mean that they came from two entirely different mammals that learned to fly separately. Evidently having hand wings is just an easy way for mammals to become flyers.

And I'm not usually freaked out by animals ether. It's only this specific one which is why I commented in the first place because it's weird that they freak me out and if something is weird I tend to share it. I think mambas and gaboon vipers are cute (the deadly snakes) but for some reason these snails are different for some reason and that is so weird. I'm not bothered by small crawly things ether which makes this even more confusing. I don't understand my brain sometimes.
