What is Art Theft? An Informative PSA

So you're scrolling along the forums, looking at cool art, and suddenly a thread is busting with people left and right debating if something is stolen. "How can this be stolen?"  you might ask, not even sure who you are talking to; "it's not even making any money." A quick Google search on the topic doesn't even help you here, because the only definitions behind "art theft" either are clearly made up by the writer and are posted on deviantArt or involve the actual physical theft of Rembrandt paintings from museums. So what exactly is art theft, and why are people making such a big deal out of it?

Well first off, your search didn't work because of a simple issue of terminology. "Art theft" as used here is actually jargon used by (primarily digital) artists to refer to several different situations where their work might be redistributed or copied in a manner that does not help the artist or coincide with the artist's intent. The real working definition for what artists online call "art theft" is actually "plagiarism." The legal definition of plagiarism is described here by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary:

As you can see there are two main concepts that make up art theft. The first is the most well known and is defined as copying an art piece, such as physically tracing it, redrawing it (referred to as "eyeballing"), or editing it (such as recoloring or adding markings, or using it in part in a new piece). So long as you are doing even one of these things, you are plagiarizing another's work, and so are committing an "art theft." This is very harshly viewed in the art community and will get you blacklisted by the artists and a lot of hate mail and bad juju with just about everyone else. In some cases, especially if you are making a profit off of the work somehow, this can even get you on the receiving end of a lawsuit. While sometimes this is people explicitly posting an exact copy of a work of art and saying "I created this," it could also be posting an art piece in an area where it is always implied only original art is posted (such as on deivantArt or the art section of a forum" or something less cut and dry. Below are some more nuanced examples of plagiarized art from this first category, which we'll call "Type 1 art theft."

(left: a panel from the manga Bleach. Right: the plagiarized image "by" Nick Simmons)

(original art in the middle is of Hatsune Miko, not sure who the thief is, or even if this is parody of actual theives)

Here the first example is of "heavy referencing." The lines don't exactly match, but they are close enough that the original artist was doing all the hard work and the second is just a copy.

Image two is a direct trace.

Image 3 is of photoediting direct portions of someone else's work into your piece.

Image 4 is a "recolor."

It should go without saying that in all these cases the plagiarizer was in the wrong, since they claimed work someone else did as their own, with significantly less work. But claiming someone else's work as your own is not the only way to steal art. As you can see in the dictionary, the second catagory of plagiarism is "use (another's work) without crediting the source." This means that even if you DON'T claim it to be your work, it can still be plagiarized if the artist is not consenting to your use of their work and explicitly mentioned as having created their work. This is very common on forums and social media, and we will refer to it as "Type 2 art theft." Examples of Type 2 art theft may be:

- posting a photo or other artwork without actively implying that you are the creator, but not mentioning who the creator is either

- using an art piece that the artist allows people to edit and reuse, but not crediting them for the original piece

- failing to fit the terms of the original creator in your version's distribution (ex if artist says "can reuse so long as you don't monetize it" and then selling it, or "can use as desktop background but don't print as a poster" and then printing it.)

- posting the art with the disclaimer "art not by me" or "credit to the artist" but not actually getting permission from the artist and attaching their name to the work

- posting the art with the correct name and links but not getting explicit permission first (ex saying
"art by GoodArtist on link.com" but not messaging them "hey can i use this art you drew to show how my character should look on  the SoD forums")

- making a collage or photoedit using photographs you find on the internet that aren't listed as royalty free and without asking the photographer permission.

(example of the last)

"But Paxy!" You say "That's an awful lot of rules, and I know lots of people who don't follow them. Why should I?"

That's a good question, mysterious forum go-er who can talk through my computer screen. Certainly a lot of these cases don't look like anyone is getting hurt, and half the SoD community is using MS Paint to color Astrid's hair black and call it an OC. After all, if an artist put their work online where anyone can see it for free, and you are using in a way that isn't making it a profit, and the creator still has the original, how is anything getting stolen?

Well, it's honestly very simple. Art is a business, where people create a unique product using skills they have put a lot of time, effort, and money into. Professional level artists have usually taken at least a four-year college course getting a bachelor's in arts to get to the point where they can create strong enough art to be in demand for even a mediocre living wage. That's at least $22,000 for public school students or $43,000 for private school students, not counting any of the materials or time spent doing nothing but art during that period and before it. If the artist is not professional yet but selling a few art commissions in high school or younger, you're looking at the cost of their programs, computer, and tablet invested at least (probably around $2,500) , with a traditional artist paying a lot more than that in materials. The skill and materials involved to create art are all fundamentally involved in the worth of their art, the same way that med school and training are fundamentally involved with how much skill a doctor has. When you claim an art piece as your own, you are claiming that skill as your own, and the time, effort, and money the artist spent on it and everything before it along with it. Worse, by not linking to the correct artist, you are preventing everyone you are exposing to the image from having the option to pay the original artist for prints or commissions that the artist needs to pay off the monetary debt it took to get to the point of creating that work. Even if none of those people wanted to buy something, simply getting recognition for one's work is inspiring and attracts more followers that will buy something. Exposure of a product is worth money - that's why companies make an effort to pay for ads to run sites like tumblr that run on ad revenue, and that's why artists put their art online to be viewed for free. The art is the product and putting it on an easily viewable portfolio is the advertising - removing if from that context is theft. Moreover, claiming the art as your own is pretending you are more skilled than you are, creating a competition with other skilled artists for attention (which, again, equals money for artists) and stunting your own artistic development since you would expose your lie by showing the difference between that work and your own.

"But surely" you say, "I'm not hurting myself OR the artist if I explicitly state they drew it but don't ask first! I mean, they're busy, and might not answer me when I ask, and I REALLY want to use that image!"

Well it's true that you aren't stealing their money or attention if you do that, and no one thinks you are more skilled than you are, but you can STILL be hurting the artist anyway. How? Well, a lot of art is by commission. When you commission an artist there is an understanding, usually either in writing or implicitly refered, that the piece will be your personal content only. In many ways this is exactly like selling a physical painting -  the artist is promising that this is the only copy of that art, and that even though they may show pictures of it in their portfolio they won't sell an identical or even strongly similar work to anyone else. The worth of the piece looses value when other people are allowed to use it, especially if it was intended as an album cover, book cover, present to someone else, or any other form use of imagery where allowing others to use it for free would render the original useless. On top of this commissions and even personal art created by artists online will often be of original characters and designs, where the owner of that design or character is trusting that no one will use it in a way they don't intend. This is why it's especially important to ask the artist permission first before using any character art. This is true with photography too - it takes a lot of skill to get a good photo and that value might be worth thousands to a company like National Geographic IF they are the sole clients, but distributing the image all over the net renders it a net worth of zero dollars.

"But but" you whimper, "Paxy I'm not good at art and it's not fair for me to not be able to show people how I want my RP people to look."

That's ok! There's actually a ton of art you can use that explicitly mention they are free to use and even edit without asking, so long as you don't monetize it! Some good ones even make creation fast and easy like dolldivine.com (which can make humanoids AND night furies!), and you can always use real photos you find on google by clicking [tools], [usage rights] and selecting "Labled for noncommercial reuse." Please just remember that if you find art doing this you should still mention who the artist is. Also, while editing screenshots of big media movies and tv shows is frowned upon and not real art or real skill, no one is going to really stop you if you want to keep doing that.

I hope this cleared up any questions you might have had about art theft! For more information on art plagiarism and examples, or if you are curious what my citations are, check out these:

If you have any questions I'll answer them here! You may now post.

Also quick edit: for the nick simmons I got right and left mixed up! that's because I was using an inversed image before. The black and white image is the original from an issue of Bleach, and the color one is the plagiarized piece!

in the past site I used to reside in 24/7, art theft was huge. i never used to think it was that bad about a year ago, until I started to make my art serious art. Then I understood how frustrating it could be.

About a a month ago, 1000warriors said their artwork couldn’t be used on the site anymore, and the staff members there hired an “art crew.” Where they took care of stolen artwork and made sure no one was stealing, it worked surprisingly well.

aww thanks

Yeah art theft is something that doesn't seem harmful until you've become more entranced in the art community and gained more skill, so I find it can be pretty bad on forums like this with a younger audience. Hiring an art-protection crew for a site sounds lovely, I wish SoD would do it!

Wolf is my in-game character. Her full name is 'Wolf and Star'. She takes on my own personality, which is quite similar to that of Lynx. During quests, Wolf loves to muck around and try to break the system by utilizing glitches- just for laughs, but she always produces reliable results. She is a fair Viking and she never uses glitches for her own personal gain. Some of my profile info will be listed below:.............

Clan: The Phantom Lords......................

Lynx is bold and loud. She is like Luna Lovegood in the sense that she is rather... odd. Loud, shameless and weird. She is more animal-like than human. Lynx enjoys being flashy, showing off her skills. Once she sets her mind to something, she is naturally good at it. The problem is that she loses focus easy and doesn't like setting herself to standards. She craves adventure and can grow bored easily. She is particularly fast on her feet but has low stamina levels. She is strong and tall for her age. Lynx is stubborn and laid-back most of the time. She does not like to follow orders. Some of her skills include: being double jointed, the ability to be able to climb almost any surface, very good at mimicking animal sounds and is EXTREMELY good at sneaking around. However, there is a side to Lynx that she does not show very often. She is very lazy and selfish at times, mainly because she lacks compassion towards humankind, caring more about dragons and animals more so than humans. This tendency causes her to be merciless in the face of battle.

.....................Art was done by Marg The Loony and Chameishida

Lyra is very sheltered and shy. She suppressed her emotion and looks down on those who do are emotional. Lyra can be rudely sarcastic at times and accidentally offend someone. Don't expect a public display of remorse. This does not mean she is feelingless though, she feels emotion, but, she is just very insecure about it. She does not like showing weakness or personal attachment, more insecurity, and less sociopathy. Though in fights, she doesn't appear to have a sense of honor and isn't afraid to fight dirty. Lyra is willing to do anything to ensure her well being, and the well being of her mother. Which could be a weakness. She values her self-preservation. She usually has her hood masking her pale delicate face, which sunburns easily and long hair.

 Art was done by DuskDayBreak

One of Nyx's most defining traits is her brash and sarcastic attitude towards everything that breathes. She is the type of girl who does not have to do much to stand apart from the crowd. However, Nyx is no way an extrovert, the reason why she puts herself in social situations is purely one of two reasons, the first one being is that she wants to go people watching. Where she sits in some corner and watches people, how they react and their social cues. She just observes them, untangles their motives and finds their interests. The second reason is that she wants to show up the competition, along with being stubborn, Nyx is a show-off. The problem is, natural talent can only get you so far. Because of her years from people watching, she has become very keen on observations. Smarter than the average person, she is able to look at any given Viking and deduce a thing or two about them. Sort of like Sherlock Holmes but not nearly as skilled. With her great intelligence, comes social anxiety. Nyx buried this under layers of brashness but, this insecurity can be sorted out by the way she avoids social and emotional get-togethers. Due to her inability to express her social anxiety, Nyx finds herself at a lack of friends. She usually plays this off as her not wanting any friends but sometimes, when a dragon is your only friend, you can get lonely. The result, she makes a lot of enemies. Usually because of her showoff-ness and Brash attitude, and sarcasm. In reality, Nyx wants some friends, but she sees this as a weakness and as part of her insecurities which she buries deep inside of her and does not let anyone see. She's not edgy, she's just misguided.

Aeryn Nyght

 Art was done by Tosilohi

Aeryn also has a sense of show-off-ness, an over-the-top, dramatic character. She takes any given situation, brandishes it with a flare of sarcasm and performs, drawing attention to herself all the while managing to act edgy or sweet, or however she wanted to be perceived. This need of hers to put on a show made her invaluable to the man while she was on his side. Like the theatre kid she should be, Aeryn has expertly crafted this skill of taking on different personas, and she isn't afraid to add in some cliche drama to her dialogue and actions. Constantly referencing pop-culture, Aeryn is interesting, but the tiring person to be around. The problem with her extroverted, boldness is that few get to witness the actual Aeryn, not one of her many characters. In a sense, it is quite similar to the multifaceted personality disorder, only, Aeryn recognizes her many personas. She chooses not to show anyone her true colors due to some insecurities. These different personalities are the shields she has put up for emotional protection. With Aeryn, you never know if her reactions are genuine or just part of the show.

Gail Cyrek

 Art was done by Katarile

Gail is very softspoken. She does not like attracting much attention as people have a tendency to stare. She is very insecure about her face and does her best to conceal it. She gets very annoyed if someone asks about it. However, with this silence comes the ability to listen. She observes the world around her and is able to spot even the tiniest of details. This silent brilliance has made her a stellar judge of character. She reads body language very well and has a certain flare of stubbornness about her. Still, she is very dark. Generally, when she speaks, most people cannot hear what she says, which is probably a good thing because what she does say is usually pretty dark or gory. She often says random and slightly disturbing things and speaks extremely softly anyone can barely hear her. Gail seems to be pretty timid but is generally ruthless. She is a bit of a pyromaniac and will do almost anything to get her way.

Thank you

Thank you.

I wasn’t nearly as attentive when I first joined the forums about art thievery as I am now. I honestly didn’t think much of it. But when your subjugated by such it becomes p serious and frustrating, and having pals who have worked their tonkas off to try and make a living off their art it becomes downright aggravating when uneducated children on a crappy forum participate or defend art thievery.

So thank you

Wiggles the whispering death ate my subject

"posting a photo or other artwork without actively implying that you are the creator, but not mentioning who the creator is either"

"posting the art with the disclaimer "art not by me" or "credit to the artist" but not actually getting permission from the artist and attaching their name to the work"

" posting the art with the correct name and links but not getting explicit permission first (ex saying

"art by GoodArtist on link.com" but not messaging them "hey can i use this art you drew to show how my character should look on  the SoD forums")"

These ones in particular happen a lot on this forum. People usually call these people out if someone catches them with something that's not theirs in their sig but that IS an if. It causes quite a show when someone is caught. Doing it for a picture used as a "this is what my character looks like" in a RP however is oddly ignored. I did do the RP version once. I did my best to use official pictures rather then single artist fan made stuff to be slightly less bad (it was a star wars RP and a lot of my characters were generic looking droids with not so generic personalities so I just wanted to show what that particular type of droid looked like as apposed to the specific one that was my character). Looking back I worry one of the pictures wasn't what I hoped it was as I was not yet good at looking further into picture sources. Still this issue is a rampant one in the RP community for some reason and a lot of people just use whatever instead of trying to filter what they use. I've seen people state that they flat out got pictures from deviantart and I doubt in most cases they asked for the artists permission since in a RP you usully are trying to move quick to keep up with everyone else.

As for recolors. I know those are frowned apon in places like deviantart because that's an actual art site where you're suppose to show your skills. They aren't looked down on as much here where people just want to see what their character would look like in the show or something as long as they are using screenshots of the show and not someone's fan art. Dreamworks generally just considers such things a form of fan art so even though they are still sort of art theft they are an oddly socially acceptable one kind of like picking up someone's dropped pencel and keeping it. But yes if you attempt this on deviantart or something you'll get a lot of eyerolls

Seen here with a snow nadder and a statue Termite gave her because she couldn't sell it.

(Wiggles bit it's left arm off.)

Below is my profile pic made bigger to show the amazing detail

It's Hypergoof going berserk with a durian mace.

(Drawn by my amazing sister)

(She even drew the fur on the shoes)

(My in game character)- A friendly young Viking who interacts better with dragons than with people. This is partly because although she now lives on Berk her family was originally from the Berserker tribe. When Dagger came to power Hypergoof, her sister and her parents were forced to flee as they were terrified of their new chief after he threatened to kill Hypergoof's parents for speaking out. The family found a new home on Berk. After working hard to get the Hooligans (what Hiccup's tribe was called in the books) to trust her (mostly) Hypergoof got a job working at a dragon rehabilitation center which is part of the reason she knows so many dragons. Hypergoof has a few problems. One, she is terrified of hot things. (A problem I myself have) She will not touch any stoker class dragons as a result. (With the exception of two individuals) She will still try to help a injured stoker as long as she doesn't have to touch it. Her other problem is also based on one of mine. I am Hypersensitive to sound and certain noises hurt me. Hypergoof has this too but in her the pain can cause her to go Berserk. One of the worst noises is whistling. She will attack anyone who does it near her. (Note this does not mean that I will fire troll those who's character whistles in game. It is a character trait for role playing and storytelling only.) Hypergoof also can't stand large crowds for too long. She will often retreat if things get too noisy. Hypergoof is a good fisher and farmer but a horrible fighter. (Unless she goes Berserk in which case she may get hurt but will do significant damage to her opponent.) She is generally friendly unless she gets stressed out in which case she becomes snappy. Most of her friends are dragons. Because of this Hypergoof has picked up dragoneese and speaks it quite fluently.

Littlebird (Hypergoof's sister) and Hypergoof's parents don't have much back story at the moment. None are in game.

Termite- Is one of Hypergoof's few human friends. (She is in game now as HypersFriendTermite. The chances of seeing her are low though. If seen she will probably be with Wiggles.) She is a woodworker hence the name. She didn't trust Hypergoof when they first met but soon found that they had a lot in common. She is the true trainer of Wiggles but often leaves him with Hypergoof when she must work on something.  Hypergoof and Termite like to take dragon food out into the wilderness ware they wait to see what shows up. A pass time they lovingly call dragonwaching.

(wants to chew on Mildew's new chair just off camera)

(FUN FACT: Mildew is one of the only people Wiggles doesn't like)

A young rambunctious whispering death with a sweet heart but a naughty mind. Hypergoof's friend Termite adopted him as a baby when his whole family was killed by dragon slayers. Unlike most of his species Wiggles could be described as... cuddly. He wants to be friends with everyone he meets and seems completely oblivious to his size and appearance. He simply does not understand that he is scary and is baffled that some people won't play with him or give him a hug. His best friend growing up was Termite's mutt of a dog Drool, and Wiggles learned the odd habit of waging his tail from his canine friend. Most dignified dragons (especially whispering deaths) are appalled by the behavior but no amount of laughing at Wiggles or begging him to stop for the sake of dignity will change anything. Wiggles simply doesn't care. All that matters to him is how much fun he's having. He will even allow himself to be dressed up for snoggletog and will parade around in the Jingle bells and antlers with pride. (As seen here.) Wiggles is an all around charming and sweet creacher but he is not without flaws. He can not be left alone for more than five minutes or else he will chew on something, especially furniture. Usually damaging it beyond repair. He can not be taken to a marketplace because the concept that Termite "hasn't bought that yet and so he shouldn't eat it" is something he can not seem to grasp. Nore is the one that "That doesn't belong to us!" Termite has taken to carrying a bag of dried mutton strips (Mutton is Wiggles's favorite) to redirect the serpent's attention if she catches him with the look in his eyes that she learned to recognize as his "I'm going to chew on that" face. Despite her best efforts Wiggles is a hand full and Termite often leaves him with Hypergoof if she has to go do some woodworking. Wiggles thinks of Termite as his mother but he thinks of Hypergoof as a friend and enjoys playing with her. Hypergoof shows no fear towards him at all and will even let Wiggles hug her if he asks permission first. (Hypergoof does not like being touched without warning but will happily accept a hug from a friend.) Interestingly Hypergoof found that Wiggles is a very good racer despite his poor eyesight.

(Relaxing at home)

The first dragon Hypergoof ever rescued and one of her closest friends. He is a Pink and Blue deadly nadder. When he was a hatchling his curiosity got the better of him. He wandered away from his nest in the dead of winter and found himself lost in a blizzard which would have been the end of him if he hadn't stumbled onto the front lawn of Hypergoof's house. His crys alerted the family who quickly took him in out of the cold and thus saved his life. Cuteseepie and Hypergoof have been friends ever since. Cuteseepie has a mellow gentle nature broken up occasionally for excitement at an adventure. He will defend Hypergoof or if need be prevent her from attacking someone who whistled. His level headedness balances out against Hypergoof's goofyness rather nicely.

(Showing off again)

A skrill that Hypergoof found injured while dragon watching. Her success in helping him helped her get the job she currently has and also built up a friendship between Hypergoof and Ziggy. It probably helped that Ziggy is not a very old skrill, only having just left his parents, before somehow getting hurt. Much like a cat Ziggy tries to be more dignified than he really is. One moment showing off his impressive wingspan with a majestic yawn and the next he's off chaiseing a light or a leaf when he thinks no one is looking. He often roles his eyes when Hypergoof playfully teases him by saying his name in a funny pitch or calling him "The Zigster" but a poorly hidden grin betrays the fact that he doesn't mind as much as he lets on. Ziggy is decently friendly to most people who don't insult his dignity (only his close friends are allowed to do that) but he is still technically a wild skrill. He spends most of his time off chaising storms and doing whatever else wild skrills do only he stops by every once in a while to visit Hypergoof. Manny people wonder why he keeps coming back as he always seems more annoyed with Hypergoof than anything but it is just a mask. A false front. He secretly really enjoys her company. In fact perhaps Hypergoof's absurdity amuses him. FUN FACT: Before meeting Ziggy it was Hypergoof's life dream to see a live skrill. (Partly her Berserker heritage) For her meeting Ziggy was akin to meeting a celebrity. Of course things got more normal between them as they got to know each other but Hypergoof is still pretty darn proud that a skrill let her be his friend.

(Knows the owner of this house hates it when he sits there)

A young flightmare who was one of Ziggy's friends then also became Hypergoof's friend when Ziggy brought him to Berk. Unlike Ziggy though, Causemoe decided that he liked Berk and the school so much that he would stay. He is a complete showoff and loves to be the center of attention. He can get huffy if he finds someone who does one of his favorite things better than him. He especially hates it that Wanda can glow brighter than him. She often tones down her glow when she's near him to spare his feelings.

(Knows the best places for the best view)

As mentioned before, Hypergoof is scared of stoker class dragons. When approached by a fireworm her normal reaction is to flip out as if the little dragon was a bee. Wanda however is an exception to this rule and not only is she a fireworm but she is a fireworm queen. Hypergoof once got herself lost in a snowstorm and was found by one of Wanda's workers unconscious and soon to freeze if something wasn't done. Wanda is a very empathetic dragon. Even though she didn't trust humans she didn't want to see a helpless creacher d.ie in such a way. She took Hypergoof into her nest to warm up. Hypergoof was stuck there for several days not knowing which way was home until Cuteseepie tracked her down by scent and took her back to the village. During Hypergoof's time in the nest Wanda decided she liked this little human. Hypergoof was terrified of most of Wanda's children and since Wanda didn't understand Norse yet Hypergoof communicated her unease by sticking as close to the fireworm queen as she would allow. Purposely mimicking the bodylanguig of a scared puppy to get her point across. Wanda was sympathetic of Hypergoof's fear and allowed the little human to stay near. Keeping the meaner members of her family at bay until Cuteseepie could find the lost viking. Wanda was a bit suprized to find that a dragon was the one looking for the girl. She has a healthy dose of curiosity in her and often visits Berk for "research purposes" as she calls it. Wanda is curious about humans and wants to learn about them. Hypergoof is grateful to Wanda for her kindness and will come when she calls. Something Wanda finds amusing but also gives her an easy target to study. Personalitywise Wanda is the type of person one might have a fancy tea party with. She is every bit a queen but is also an intellectual with a kind heart. She hangs around Berk to study the uneeq human and dragon interactions there. Seeking how to possibly spread that type of friendship for the good of dragon kind.

(Wonders if she'd get in trouble for blasting me into the water behind the camera)

A pink thunderdrum who someone in the dragon rehab center found as a baby then dumped on Hypergoof since no one wanted to deal with the hatchling. Their relationship started out terribly due to Hypergoof's sound sensitivity. In the beginning Hypergoof could barely stand Burpetta but eventually the dragon realized that her loudness has hurting the human and learned to be more gentle with Hypergoof's delicate ears. Sometimes Burpetta can be careless but she never means any harm and will correct her behavior when she eventually realizes she did wrong. She is kind by nature but loves a bit of mischief now and then. She also has a bit of the stubbornness common in her breed. Once she sets her mind to something it is difficult to convince her otherwise.

(Sleeping like the baby he is)

A screaming death. He is the baby of the group despite being the biggest member of it. When Alven found out that one of the eggs he'd planted under Berk had hatched a screaming death he decided he wanted such a beast for himself. He knew he couldn't capture the adult so he decided to get his hands on a hatchling. He captured a bunch of the successful breeding pair's family members in the hopes that more of them would carry the incredibly rare screaming death gene. The captive dragons were force bread and after many many attempts Alven got what he wanted. He didn't get to keep it though as a couple Hooligans who had snuck into Alven's hideout looking for helpful info about future plans found the baby screaming death instead. They took it back to Berk to figure out what to do with it. Several people wanted to kill the little guy before he could grow into an island eater but Hypergoof over heard and was horrified. She knew what it felt like to be disliked for what she was rather than who she was. Some people didn't trust her because she was a Berserker. She knew it wasn't fair to judge someone that way. She stole Chomp and (With Wiggles and Termite's permission) hid him down Wiggles's tunnels. Wiggles didn't mind and enjoyed having a roommate to play with. Chomp stayed there unknown until his loudness and the sheer amount of food being brought down there gave him away. By then though he was old enough that he had enough personality to proved him a gentle giant rather than a monster and he was allowed to stay. He is not at all a full grown screaming death and has the personality of a giant toddler. He is surprisingly gentle especially considering his breed. He is so mild tempered that he will stare blankly at fire trolls wondering what they are doing. He will only engage if he thinks it's a game. Despite his gentleness his size and strength can be a problem. He will occasionally knock someone over with his tail by accident then stare at them in confusion not smart enough to understand why the person fell but knowing it was still somehow his fault. When other screaming deaths were allowed into the school Chomp was thrilled to have playmates his size. Chomp is very much still a baby mindwise. He is very food oreeinted and can be prompted to do nearly anything for a snack. It's a very good thing he doesn't consider humans food. It's hard to imagine that he could ever be related to the screaming death who once tried to eat Berk but he is. The danjoris one happens to be his somewhat distant uncle. Fun fact: Hypergoof often refers to Chomp's uncle as Mr. Island munch and insists that she will continue to do so until his actual name is found out or created.

(LOVES sand)

(I really shouldn't be suprized)

A female sand wraith. Punaluu comes from a subspeasys of sand wraith on a volcanic island with black sand. (Like the beach Punaluu is named after.) As such they adapted to the environment by becoming black. A side affect of this is that now the subspeacys looks even more like a nightfurry than the normal ones. Some money hungry showmen found out about them and decided to make a quick buck. They stoll an egg from this island and paraded the black hatchling around claiming it to be a nightfurry. This charade ended when they made the mistake of bringing their show to Berk. Seeing that the dragon was being treated badly the Hooligans took the baby from the showmen and took it to the dragon rehabilitation center for treatment for whip wounds and malnutrition. Punaluu is much healthier now and is a happy energetic young sand wraith. One problem she has is that her dark coloring is only designed for a certain type of area and she can not camouflage most of the time because of it. Not being able to hide occasionally gives her episodes of anxiety but a quick trip to a beach ushuly fixes it. She is very shy around strangers but around those she knows she is a complete goof. She can also be a bit naughty. Sometimes she feels out of place like she doesn't belong and so interacts well with Hypergoof who doesn't fit in all that well ether.

recoloring popular media is usually fine

I know it's pretty rampant in RP, it has been bad in RP communities long before SoD and the reason people don't usually address it is that frequently only the people participating in an RP see what happens in that thread, and frankly artists are usually too busy. It is still damaging though. Just think if you drew art of your SoD character, and someone else took that and played that character in an RP, but got their name wrong, made them racist or OP, and otherwised messed with the image you created for that character. That's how artists and their commisioners feel when people steal their characters's images too, which is why I think it's something that needs to be addressed.

I address the recolors in the end as something that really isn't a big deal if it's official artwork, such as if you take a screenshot from the RTTE tv show and recolor a dragon, because that particular kind of art A) doesn't loose value through reuse, and in fact might gain value from being shared more frequently, B) it's very well known without saying who the owner(s) of the original characters, designs, distribution rights, ect. is for everyone who sees it and C) frankly companies like Dreamworks have so much money and prestige that it doesn't effect them in the slightest.  Artists in other communities look down on it because it's kind of lazy and doesn't help anything, but it's fundamentally harmless. However, it IS bad if someone takes a screenshot of toothless, recolors over the entire body, deletes the background picture and claims that they drew it freehand, and it's also very bad if the recolor is done on fanart another artist created, since that goes against the intent of that artist and discredits their work/subject/skill. And trust me, that does still happen.

Thanks for the thread. Let me bump it.

There's so many people on these forums who steal everything they can find. It's one of the main reasons I moved my requests to Discord. At least I can filter out the trash that way. Luckily people who steal on here do it shamelessly and obviously so at least it's easy to see who's an art thief or not.

I just wish more people on these forums would actually do someting about it and stop enabling and indulging the art thieves. Stop making fan art of stolen characters, guys.

I also wish the admins did something about it, but they're often more concerned about people being meanie-poos to the art thieves rather than the issue at hand.

Yikes, I knew it was a bad thing, but I now see it's worse. I watch this one person on Tumblr who has to stick their username in the big middle of their drawings to try and filter out the stealing. I didn't know that people did it that much until I saw how many people reposted their art without permission. It's really sad.

Thanks for putting the information out where the forum's kids can see. Maybe there won't be as much stolen art here, now. *crosses fingers*

taught me what love is.

Being friends with Dragon (AKA, jada) has been a real treat. She's a very understanding person, an amazing artist, and has written one of my favorite stories.

taught me that anyone can have friends.

Thunder was one of my first real friends to ever have. Even though we're both awkward, our friendship still lives.

taught me that the smart ones always win.

I've known Charly as long as Dragon, but I didn't really get to know her until the past year and a half. She's a book-worm and will make grammar jokes with me whenever.

taught me that brownies are more than just tasty.

The couple of years I've known Jess have flown past so quickly, I don't know what hit me. He's super funny and loves Undertale and Minecraft.

taught me that some of the funniest jokes are the lamest.

Once upon a time, Numb and I were constantly mad at each other and always at each other's throats. That all changed a little while after our worst fight, and now we throw bananas and tell bad jokes with each other.

taught me a level of patience I never knew.

Master's a cool dude, however depressed he may be. I can't help but to call him a friend.

taught me that sometimes randomness brings great things, like friends.

Fury's an amazing person. For some reason, she answered my random message and now we chat about Nintendo, Frank Sinatra, and Paul McCartney.

helped me become more social.

Grim's my newest friend, but she's also one of my best. She's a sweet, funny person and can always bring a smile to my face. Plus I loaf her art.

showed me hope.

Boomy was bored, I was lonely. What better way to make a friend? He's like a salted-caramel chocolate bar-- sweet, but salty-- and has made lots of days brighter.

I love them all more than I love pecan pie on Thanksgiving, and there's

nothing I wouldn't do just to know that they're happy.

It be da truth!

You smile. You're their happy friend-- it's your job.

You always smile and try to make them smile. Why wouldn't you?

But sometimes you fall.

But you try to smile anyway. It's your job.

Then you see your friends, and that weight called sorrow is lifted and you don't have to try...

It comes naturally.

I love you guys. <3

I know this shouldn't be, but I envy those who are closer to my beautiful friends than I. I shouldn't, because I am lucky enough for them to have accepted  me as a friend. I'm sorry.

Yeah, no, art theft doesn't

Yeah, no, art theft doesn't exist. Even if you call it plagiarism it just is a term invented by self entitled "artists" who think they deserve money just because they made a pretty drawing. You do not own the pixels on my screen and if your business can only survive by taking away people's freedoms you are the real thief here. Or perhaps scam artist would be a better term.

"We like out-of-print games, retro skates, got a Pac-man tattoo"

lmao yeah, you looking for trouble?

Art theft does exist.

Even if someone isn't charging for a piece of art, they still put a lot of time and work into that art. It's theirs! It's rude and uncaring if someone comes along and steals that art to claim it as their own.

And, if someone's talented enough to make a "pretty drawing", they deserve to be paid. Because they work and put thought and time into all the precious details that makes something a "pretty drawing".

Not everyone can do art, so that's why some people commission artists to draw things for them. You know why? Because art of any kind (music, paintings, etc.) is beautiful, and one of the few pleasures we have. Also, it's really cool to see these artists put their talents to work and see how they push themselves.

Just the sentence "Even if you call it plagiarism it just is a term invented by self entitled 'artists'..." is rude. Incredibly rude. These artists put a lot of time (idk how many times i'm going to repeat myself) and effort into their work, and to say they're just "self-entitled", is just unbearably rude, and is going to get you in a lot of trouble.

So, yeah.

Careful Ren

Diva artists do exist, and they are the worst part of the art community. But art theft does exist. People do own the pixels on your screen sometimes, it doesn't give you the right to take their art and pass it off as your own. Art posted online is protected by law, and when someone pays for "a pretty drawing" they take share of the art the artist made them. They don't steal the art because it's art made for them, so that isn't art theft. But if I made someone a piece of art, and someone else who didn't pay for it says "this is my OC!", that is art theft, because they didn't pay for that art nor make it so they don't have the right to use it.

I can see you didn’t read what I have to say

“You don’t own the things i see,” you say, shoving handfuls of Oreo packets into a shopping cart and bolting for the door. “If your business thrives on taking people’s freedoms away you are the real thief!” you shout back at the fuming manager who is waving a bat threateningly. “You are all just supporting a corrupt system” You shout as the cops handcuff you.

yeah no I do own those pixels, and so do other artists. Pixels can be arranged in many ways to make many things, but when I arrange them in a way that reflects my art, I actually have the sole legal distribution rights of that particular arrangement. “If your photos, drawings, paintings or illustrations are first published in the United States or in a country with which the US has a copyright treaty, they are protected automatically without being registered with the US Copyright Office.” -https://www.bellevuefineart.com/copyright-issues-for-artists/

this is can be confirmed pretty easily by reading actual copyright laws, but this is good paraphrasing.

So in recap, artists aren’t “taking (your) freedoms” away, you never had that right. Just like you can’t take a picture of Simba the Lion and sell shirts of it without getting a meeting from Disney’s lawyers, you don’t have the right to anyone’s art or photography, in part of full, unless it’s specifically given to you. And this is just as fair, because art is invaluable in marketing, communication, and personal enjoyment. It is also a trained skill, just like mechanic work or architecture. That artist has an uncommon skill, and if you want to benefit from it, you must pay for it. Failing to do so is exactly the same as taking your car to a shop and driving away without paying for the work done. It may not be something physical you bought, but it has value and requires time and skill, and so must be paid for.

Oh, okay! So by extension,

Oh, okay! So by extension, animators, movie production teams, game creators, and pretty much all media creators should never be paid for their work, and anything online is up for grabs?

Latest News Regarding Me:

Im gone boios, and I'll give y'all one free parting gift- fan characters listed here are now free-to-use: go nuts my dudes, I aint using them any more. Fan fiction plots are free for the taking, so if somebody wants to take over the Alpha Series, doors open.

If you want a request done before I leave for upwards of several years, shoot me a PM before the 30th and I'll do it- THIS ONLY APPLIES TO PRE-EXISTING PERSONALISED ONES. Recolours do not count to this.

I'll still be on the Discord server tho, if you truly must find me.

Art Requests

Currently Closed! PM me with the details of the drawing you want done. I'm best with dragons, getting pretty good with human skills, and can create digitally, a symmetrical 3D model, or on paper with graphite, pen, and/or watercolour.

ALSO: it may help to send me reminders every few weeks since i am not very reliable and will forget things quickly.

The Alpha Trilogy

Reign of the Deep Queen | Refuge of the Blue King | Age of the Midnight Prince

(haha see i can edit)(sort of)

We know that Vikings settled in the Archipelago a little over 500 years ago, but what stopped them before that? In the Dragon Nest, a stolen child must try to overthrow a tyrant. Her descendant, a volitile soul, runs from revenge until he cannot go any further. His son, a strong-willed leader, takes on a new name and builds his own empire until the past catches up with even him.

(Progress on this will be slowing down since I've become comfortable with my writing skills and styles and I am moving into original works and more ambitious projects. AotMP will be finished in the same style it is currently in, but RotDQ and RotBK may be shorter and lower priority, if I decide to do them)

Ebony and Flies With Storms

(is this a self-insert-babies-first-oc type character?)
(absolutely, what do you think i am???? quality content creator?? u fool....)

by me(left), and Chameishida (right)

Dramatic and petty with no impulse control to speak of, some would say her intelligence is wasted on revenges over small things, always done in very unique and specific ways. That’s not to say she’s a bad person, or easily angered; but with an oddly selective memory, she can sometimes have a (unintended) threatening presence. Storms, on the other hand, has a far more calm demeanour and often acts *begrudgingly* as a vent for Ebony, be it random ideas or long-winded complaints.

- Working on detailed design of Ragus (her sword)

Pallus- the liberated Roman

- has a terrible memory (especially with dragon species names)

- generally avoids conflict

- has absolutely become an epic bard that parties hard

- trapped in a permenant state of i-kinda-know-what-im-doing-but-not-really-so-its-awkward

Yzar and Lochiel

- hey who wants some immortal quakens?

- thats right, these lovely ladies have surpassed mortality to be together

- only got art for Yzar so far, but Lochiel will be gettin some tasty eye-treats soon

- i love them so much.

I'm guessing you've never had someone claim your work as theirs before. My sister spends weeks and sometimes months on her art. That's a lot of time and effort and her case is normal for any artist that makes anything of quality. Also a lot of artists do art as their JOB. It's not a hobby for some people. It's what puts food on their table. So yes. If someone is making art good enough that people want it and they can sell it then they do deserve to be payed for the weeks or months of time they put into each peace. If you copy the art of an artist you're the scammer not them. You're the one mooching off someone by claiming their work as yours.

Even if the art isn't being sold though it's still freaking rude to claim something that is not yours as yours. In that case you might not be doing something illegal depending on what is copyed but you're still a jerk and every artist around you who knows what you did will hate you. If you really want free art free art does exist. Just don't go taking or copying the stuff that isn't free.

You wouldn't copy someone elses test results taking advantage of someone elses ability to studdy for high grades would you? Cuz it's on that level of rudeness.

To some it up like Paxy said mimicking or stealing art that's meant to be sold but you didn't by is like paying for services like getting your car or sink fixed and then refusing to pay because to didn't get a physical item even though the person did work for you that you yourself couldn't do.

Meanwhile copying someone's fan art of whatever meanwhile might not be illegal but it's just rude and everyone will hate you because you're claiming someone elses work as yours.

On another note if you think art is just pretty pictures which I assume means you think it's easy you shouldn't have any trouble making your OWN rather then taking someone elses.

>art is just pixels on a screen and you don't own the pixels on mine

lol great, another one who doesn't know anything about art, ownership laws and even less about computing. This is a joke, right? No one will listen to your inane moon logic. Either stop being petty or come back when you have googled a couple things.

I'm sorry that you're so untalented and bitter that no one wants your work.

I have been having some issues with art theft and art scams, and when I accuse the person, with proof of their act, they adamantly deny it. I'll link them to this thread.
