Chapter Twenty One

Chapter Twenty-One

Alvin the Treacherous

Sun beamed down and warmed my skin for the first time in a week. I took a deep breath of the fresh air.

The deck hadn’t changed much- aside from the canvases covering all the cages. As we were led by I peeked under one to see a scaly black paw.

“Toothless?” I whispered.

“Don’t speak!” The guard behind me hissed, shoving me away from the cage.

“Makes little difference if she does,” An officer with a rat-like expression gleamed. He held up the canvas.

There was my husband’s fierce, brave dragon, sleeping so soundly a thunderdrum would not have woken him.

We were taken to stand with Justinian on the bow of the ship and made to wait until the rest of the prisoners came up.

As they did I took in our surroundings. To port was North, the bulky ship I saw when we came into Berk that fateful night, and Berks only surviving vessel. They had sunk deeper into the water and I wagered that was because both had been loaded down with as many dragons as they could hold. On the Starboard side was the trireme ship, and dangling from one of its ropes the body of a dead seal. Beyond the ship stood a small island.

There were thirty-five soldiers in all on our ship, a manageable number in my mind. In the water dorsal fins cut the surface and I had a feeling they didn’t belong to dolphins. These could be used to our advantage just as much as our disadvantage.

Lastly, fluttering all around, gnawing on everything were the red-eyed, shiny black piranharrow. There sound was a little different today, a little more grating as they crawled down the masts of the ships, scurried underfoot, and cleaned themselves atop every barrel. Three scrapped with each other on the rail before us.

Justinian looked one way and then another before shoving them over the side. They fluttered away with irritable squeaks.

Once everyone was up we were all ordered to face the starboard side of the ship. A small, weaselly man appeared on the deck of the Augustus, silver dragon perched on his shoulder. I grinned smugly at his new feature- a big purple bruise around his eye.

“Welcome, Berkians,” He bowed with that dramatic flair of his. “I hope you’re enjoying the warm sunshine.”

Loud booing and hissing resounded. To my surprise I saw a soldier doing it too.

“You’ve never been keen on formalities, have you?” Alvin rolled his eyes. “Very well I’ll cut to the chase. I know you for the fierce and bull-headed people you are, and that you’re likely planning a revolt at this very minute. Counting the soldiers on deck as I speak, I’m sure. Here’s the thing. We don’t want unnecessary violence; you are our prisoners and there’s nothing more to that. Fighting will only lead to death.”

The piranharrow swarmed upward.

“And no one is coming to save you. Not the Bog Burglars, or the Berserkers, nor the Defenders of the Wing. And last but not least,” His eyes flashed. “Not even your precious Chief Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third.”

My heart skipped as that fishbone of a Viking was brought, bound and tied, from below deck.

“HICCUP!” Valka and I both yelled.

“There they are,” Alvin pointed, “Your lovely wife, and proud mother. You any last words for them?”

“They won’t be my last,” Hiccup spat as a soldier cut his ropes.

“Of course not.” Alvin laughed. “You are Hiccup, Chief of Berk, son of Stoick, and the greatest dragon whisperer the world has ever known. This is no death sentence for you... more a… a challenge of sorts.”

“Oh Lad,” Gobber muttered. I glanced up to see he was not staring at the trireme but the island.

Alvin turned back to the crowd.

“I have kept my word with your Chief. Since the battle not a dragon has been harmed and no citizen of Berk is missing from you… even his beloved lizard is resting peacefully and promised a rich and long life. See? I have shown you mercy when just as easily I could have wiped you from existence. Now the time is come for him to fulfill his part. A Chief represents the heart and soul of a people- and though he doesn’t look it, this Chief has a heart of pride and soul of rebellion that must be crushed if you wish to live long and fulfilling lives.”

The soldiers with Alvin pointed their spears at Hiccup, forcing him towards the edge of the boat. Hot Shot barred his teeth at the viking.

Every Berkian braced in anticipation of battle. The soldiers aboard our vessel gripped their spears tighter.

“Hand me the saddle bag and drop the seal.” Alvin ordered.

With a splash the dead animal plummeted into the sea. Dorsal fins that had been listing idly now turned with interest.

“That’s your plan then? Feed me to the sharks?” Hiccup scoffed. “I’ve faced worse.”

The wicked man gestured. “Not all of those are sharks.”

Amidst the smooth fins circling the carcass a much larger, serrated one shoved its way to the fore. The shadow of its form was not only twice as big as the sharks, boasting eyestalks like a hammerhead, but also had short, muscular legs. With one snap of the beasts’ great jaws the seal was gone, a red trail of blood the only proof it had ever been there.

The creatures swam in sharp, excited turns with that smell in the water. The grating sound I thought was coming from the piranharrow stopped.

“You’re right it would be a very-anticlimactic end for a Viking who’s gone head to head with two Leviathans. Tell you what. You outswim these things and those,” He pointed to the island, “Can be your glorious end.”

On the sandy shore black creatures congregated. Their hides gleamed an iridescent purple where the sun hit and they held their heads high as they sniffed the air, pacing back and forth.

That sound. The scent of blood. With fury and dread Alvin’s plan became all too clear. The north side of the island hid the tell-tale cross-bone sand bars, but the residents were a dead giveaway.

“You monster!” Valka screamed.

“Blithering coward. Letting the devils do your dirty work, will you? How cruel can you be?” Gobber shouted.

Alvin shrugged. “I tried the painless route but here we are anyways. Besides, he is the dragon whisperer, is he not? Perhaps he’ll reach one of these poor, deaf and blind snakes.”

He tossed the saddlebag overboard.

“What was that?” Hiccup asked with eyes narrowed.

“Your dragon of course. Got to give you a fighting chance.”

“Trooper!” He gasped, and with all of us watching dove head first into shark-infested waters.

“NOOO!!” Valka took hold of the rail to jump overboard. Three soldiers tried pinning her down so I kicked one and Gobber swung his fist into the other, Valka herself threw the third one overboard.

Chaos ensued as the rest of the prisoners turned on their captors.

It took about twenty seconds to unarm most of them- but they fought fiercely and wounded many. Valka, Gobber and I could have taken the four left to us if it weren’t for Justinian.

A conk on the head had me seeing double. The captain swung low and cut Gobber’s wooden leg clear off. He stumbled and fell on his behind.

Valka had one foot on the railing when the blade of the Romans’ sword came to rest on her neck.

“One more move from any of you, and she dies where she stands.” He said in that all too calm sort of way.

“Enough!” Alvin roared and the Piranharrow swarmed around the children. “Or Berk will lose more than another Chief today!”

Every man and woman dropped their weapon.

“This is what your leader chose. Instead of facing the future he’s clung to what has always saved him in the past. His beloved dragons. Well, to the dragons he goes then! His blood will be on their talons, not mine.”

Weapons returned to their owners, the people were quickly corralled back into the cells below deck. Gobber, Valka and I were forced to stay.

We watched Hiccup swim to an outcropping, escaping the water with saddle-bag in hand just as that serrated dorsal fin returned from his meal.

Our Chief checked to see what the Skullions were doing. They still paced on the beach, unaware of his presence on the island.

“Alvin!” He roared fiercely. “I WILL get off this rock. I WILL come for my people and their dragons. For my wife, my mother, my friends, and Toothless, and I will do whatever it takes to wrench them from your greedy blood thirsty hands!”

Alvin took a bow from one of the archers, set the arrow and aimed. Hiccup jumped as it sped past, nicking him in the shoulder.

The slinking creatures on the beach lifted their noses high. They turned together with purpose in their step, headed for the outcropping. Hiccup spotted the change in behavior and stumbled into a run, disappearing from sight.

Alvin grinned. “Somehow I doubt that.”

OH THANK GOODNESS

Wat I had going on in my head was MUCH worse. Skullions? Terrifying but bearable.

Of course. The Isle of the Skullions. Is he gonna find some booby-trapped treasure? XD

hrrmmmmm and sharkworms. They need to taste some treacherous flesh, is all I’m saying...

And honestly? I have no doubt Hiccup will get off that island. I’m more worried about the Berkians.

I was hoping that part would be a litte more scary xD Oh well, maybe built up too much hype :P

And nope, there is no booby trapped treasure... or... maybe there is... it's just well hidden and he never finds it.

Explanations...

I'll have some cut clips about what happened with Hiccup, the Romans, and Alvin in the time between Astrids' capture  and Hiccup being marooned. Very Piratey of Alvin, like he was in the first book that he showed up ^^

Anywho, the clips will be over on Dragoness's thread; even though they have some more detailed information they just don't fit in the story- too much other stuff needs to happen! :D

Oh and Zesty there are a few scenes with Pallus in them too

ARRGG! ALVIN, YOU SNAKE! (Hm, snake is too nice for him, really)

Ooh, I was wondering if Skullions would show up! I had just narrowed the book islands down to Skullion Island and Bog-burglar Island, but I hadn't posted anything yet! Personally, I think the Skullions are plenty scary. They can't see or hear Hiccup, so he probably can't train them, their sense of smell is hyper acute, and they are said in the books to be extremely vicious. And there are a lot of them. So yeah, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO HICCUP! (And how will he get off the island? Skullions can't fly...)

I bow to your detective skills! You were so on the right track with the maps, I'm sorry I flung such a monkey wrench in there by mixing the two maps together. But ya figured it out and I applaud you :D

Yeah, Skullions are untrainable in the books. I don't think he'll get off with their help. Maybe he sends for help wit Trooper, if he recovers? Buuutt I get the feeling he'd be very hesitant to do so after what happened LAST time...

Chapter Twenty-Two

Skullions

“Alvin!” Hiccup roared fiercely. “I WILL get off this rock. I WILL come for my people and their dragons. For my wife, my mother, my friends, and my dragon, and I will do whatever it takes to wrench them from your greedy blood thirsty hands!”

As he spoke he watched that wretched Outcast take a bow and aim. Defiant, Hiccup stood tall, daring the coward to actually loose the arrow.

Fffwwew!

The young Chieftain jumped as it sped by. Really? He looked down at a small cut in his shoulder, starting to bleed.

Wow was Alvin a horrible shot.

…wait…

…He was bleeding.

Hiccup snapped around, studying the behavior of the only other residents of the isle. Their heads were high as those incredible noses pointed them in the direction of easy prey.

Time to go.

Stumbling over jagged rocks he ran as fast as a Viking with only one leg can.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!”

Jaws snapped shut just behind him.

Labored panting of the nearest monster felt hot on his back. A terrible, ugly talon almost a foot in length clanked against his metal leg, trying to tear tendon. Hiccup jumped as another swung around at his actual foot.

If ever there were a dragon that Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third could come close to hating, these were them.

Flightless. Sightless. Deaf. This wouldn’t have phased the dragon trainer if it weren’t for the reptile’s inhospitable disposition. They were absolutely untrainable even when raised right out of the egg- and it’s better left unsaid what happened to the last few Vikings that tried it. Their hunting instincts were just too deeply engrained in them to break, but what’s worse is how they did it. Skullions are fast, easily outrunning the average dragon’s gallop in a breezy canter. When close enough they reach out with a long, sickle like claw to hamstring their prey. Unable to run the creature is then devoured alive.

These dragons had gained such a merciless reputation among all the other dragons of the archipelago that none would ever set foot in the place- and among Vikings? There was an old saying; ‘Nothing lasts a day on Skullion Isle’

Swoosh!

Another talon swiped at his prosthetic leg and this one brought him down. He tumbled head over heels into a sandy dune. Fortunately, the skullion thought he had missed so he jumped into the air over Hiccup, claws extended, sparkling silver teeth dripping with saliva. Not missing a beat the young Chieftain bounced back up and ran past the creature as it collected itself.

Five others were right on top of him, eight more behind them and some joining the hunt as the procession went by their dens.

They had nearly crossed the entire island and Hiccup’s goal point was in sight- the double sand bars. He just had to hold the Skullions off long enough to get there!

“Gagh!”

The young man choked as the saddlebag, strapped across his shoulder and neck jerked back. He fiercely held on.

“NO!” He roared, picking up a hefty branch and beating the skullion attached to the bag. “He’s-worked-so-hard-to-live! LET-GO!”

It did let go- by taking a snap at the branch and splitting it like a toothpick.

Hiccup started and stopped.

They were surrounded.

Half-ton lizards slinked to and fro, dragging their heavy tails covered in sharp spikes. Great gaping nostrils worked tirelessly while small, glazed-over eyes stared into the void. Their lips curled back in delight and to Hiccups horror they appeared to be smiling.

He shifted his weight into a ready stance- the dragons responded with a jerk of their heads.

Interesting. he thought wryly. He moved his foot again.

They sensed it.

Very interesting. They also use vibration to track.

Holding the strap of the saddlebag tightly, Hiccup waited for the charge.

Together the dragons launched at the Viking. He jumped, landed on the snout of one and ran down it’s back. It moved like fluid beneath him, that slippery black and purple hide of scales, first sinking low and then arching back, kicking it’s heels in the air. The propulsion of the buck helped to send Hiccup flying away from the ravenous reptiles.

Deafening, blood-curling screams of anger rose behind him. They brought to mind terrifying memories.

Not to be outdone by what smelled like a walking kipper the biggest, meanest, and ugliest of the Skullions tore after Hiccup, running over and crushing some of the smaller ones in his way.

He gained fast on the one-footed viking and for a few petrifying seconds the young Chieftain thought this must really be it- then oh the welcome and delightful splash of tide! Hiccup dove right into it while his pursuer squealed in disgust. He wasn’t going to give up that easily, though.

Into the sea he stomped after that walking kipper. Hiccup swam out, keeping two crisscrossed sandbars in his sight. The tide was against him and it took a great deal out of him, but he managed to reach the safe haven.

Or… so he thought.

Looking back he saw the big ugly skullion pacing the beach angrily. The rest had all returned to their dens according to that dreadful scraping sound. Once certain that none of those big ugly heads was bobbing around in the water, making its way over, Hiccup collapsed in the sand breathing heavily. He turned to the saddlebag and opened it up.

Trooper stretched, yawned, and rolled over as though all the world was right, so the Chief took a second to rest. It was a good ten minutes before he realized he was not alone.

Pat-pat-pat…

Swish! Swish!

Grrrrr! Pat-pat-pat-pat-pat!

Hiccup bolted upright.

Screeaaall!!

“Oh you’ve got to be kidding me,” He whimpered, jumping a good three paces away. Before him snarled a small, grey colored dragon with stubby legs, stalks for his eyes, a serrated dorsal fin and five jaws worth of teeth. Just beyond it lay a fresh seal skeleton.

“Great. Of course that Sharkwyrm had a baby and of course you two would have to live here- it’s the only safe place in all Skullion island. Now where is she???” He muttered, scouring the sea and imagining how a mother sharkwyrm would take to an uninvited guest hanging out with her baby.

No sign of momma- she was probably still out there looking for him on the other side of the island.

He had to escape… but to where? The Skullions could be fooled during the day but there was little chance he’d survive a night with them. He looked down at the nick from the arrow. It had stopped bleeding for now but seemed unlikely to stay that way. Curse that crafty Alvin.

Weary eyes searched the coast for a place that was both close enough for swimming but far away from the stalking skullion, and they rested upon a peninsula to the east near the other end of the sand bar. With a sharp inhale Hiccup trekked through the soft sand, baby sharkwyrm following in his footsteps squealing and snarling.

Almost to the edge he staggered over a piece of rotted board.

It shouldn’t have bothered him… anyone would have assumed it some part of a shipwreck from long ago buried in the sand… but for some strange reason Hiccup couldn’t walk away from it. Checking the sea once more he turned to study the piece a little closer.

Straight and the boards seemed perfectly square. The few letters that stood above the sand read ‘Bew’

could it be?

Despite his better judgement (what with a hungry mother sharkwyrm in the water and all) Hiccup set aside Trooper’s satchel and dug.

The baby sharkwyrm watched with curiosity. Not the friendly type of curiosity, just the amused ‘wow this sad sorry snack is really stupid’ type.

He was right! It wasn’t a piece of shipwreck it was an old sign, and it read as follows:

Beware! Peninsula is a trap- swim west for Death’s Door

And follow the signs

Deaths door? What was that? Didn’t exactly sound good but deep in his memory he recalled tales of a cave on Skullion island. Did someone leave directions here to find it? More importantly should he follow them?? It was a really old sign and Vikings are known for playing cruel tricks. He looked back at the peninsula. That big ugly Skullion was pacing in front of it and there appeared to be more dens along the way.

Straightening Hiccup picked up the satchel. “To Deaths Door it is then.” He said with resolve, turning a 180 and marching past the surprised little sharkwyrm. The west coast was further away and the ocean churned, but it was his only hope.

Following him back across the bar the hatchling stared in genuine confusion as this snack went the wrong way.

A wild thought came to Hiccups mind.

No, I shouldn’t.

He glanced down at the sharkwyrm.

It’s a horrible idea.

…but it had been growing too long. With a twinkle in his eye he took a bone from the seal skeleton and kneeled down, coaxing.

Sharkwyrms are most greedy. They can’t stand it when someone has something they don’t. The baby arched his back to look as big as he could and ran sideways at Hiccup, snapping the bone out of his hand to grind it to pieces in his mouth.

As he did Hiccup ever so gently and slowly, brought his hand over the distracted dragon’s head and stroked those smooth scales.

The baby finished his bone but it took him a moment to realize what Hiccup was doing. When he figured it out, he snapped and scurried out of Hiccup’s reach, insulted that a lowly snack would dare to touch him!

The Viking laughed. Should he manage to get off Skullion island he could boast two things; he’d ridden on the back of a skullion and pet a baby sharkwyrm all in a single day.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Chapter Twenty-Three

Signs of a Different Time

By the time Hiccup reached the west shore he was wiped out. He rested against a rock, panting as Trooper sputtered and rolled over again. The terror was slowly coming out of his healing sleep.

The young man’s eyes wandered towards a large, serrated dorsal fin approaching the sandbar. Mother sharkwyrm rose from the water, lumbering around with her snout to the ground that Hiccup had only just trod; her hatchling following behind squealing all about the intruder.

That was close.

…swim west to Death’s Door and follow the sings.

Well he’d swum west. Now what? There wasn’t another sign in sight... or door. Could it have been buried? Rotted away? Torn down by one of the residents? He peeked over the rock.

The big scullion still paced to and fro in front of the peninsula. It didn’t smell blood so it knew the Sharkwyrms hadn’t captured the walking kipper- so it must be returning to the mainland, to the peninsula, where everything returned.

The sign had steered him right- it was worth risking discovery to find any others.

Terrible scraping sounds echoed throughout the island as her nocturnal residents slept. The creatures had a grating habit of sharpening their claws whenever they were not using them and of course the sound didn’t bother them because they were deaf, but it was awful even for a thunderdrum.

Good that they were sleeping but what would be really good was to keep it that way. Now, what could he do to keep from being detected?

Three dips in the ocean had already been a big help; his scent was barely traceable. In legend Vikings bathed five times before setting foot on Skullion but meh he always thought that sounded like overkill. As long as he didn’t reopen the wound from the arrow or get scratched on any of the fauna, he’d be ok- it was the vibrations that worried him.

The creatures were sensitive enough to tell when he moved as compared to when they did. With that in mind should he walk past dens on tiptoe? It would surely rouse a dragon from sleep.

Hiccup set his feet apart, toes facing inward (what ones he had of course) and began imitating the shuffling skulk of the skullion as best he could. It felt absolutely ridiculous and he was glad no one was there to see it.

Finding the signs took some time because he didn’t yet realize what he was looking for. As he rambled though he became aware of indents in the ground.

Dragon tracks?? He thought in surprise. No dragon dares lay a talon on this island.

They were round, deep, smaller than Skullion tracks, and looked very purposeful- like the creature wanted these tracks to be found.

Were these the ‘signs’?

Out in the open the weather had worn away any tell-tale marks to just what type of dragon it was, but they led away from the shore and into the island.

The Viking took a deep breath, stepped out in faith and followed the anomalistic pawprints.

It was harrowing to walk between all those burrows making horrific sharpening noises. Trooper whined and subconsciously dug deeper into the satchel. Over and over Hiccup caught himself tiptoeing instead of lumbering, and on one such occasion a skullion inside her den stopped sharpening that long sickle-like claw and opened her eyes. She stared right at him, blinking, and in the terror of the moment he nearly forgot the thing was blind. Quickly gathering his wits he used his false leg to scrape against a rock. The sound was identical and so was the vibration to sharpening, so the skullion shrugged and returned to sleep.

The dragon tracks led up a gently sloping hill where the first truly identifying print was found. Hiccup stared at it for a long time.

They were Rumblehorn tracks. Thinking very hard, the young Chieftain forgot to shuffle as he followed with new interest.

“Oh!” He gagged, cresting the top. “Oh eww! Oh!”

The tracks had lead him straight into a patch of Dragonsbreath.

Dragonsbreath is a succulent that grows low to the ground. It has broad, flat, spongy leaves and one large, brown, bowl-shaped flower in the center of the plant. The bowl collects rainwater and excretes a sticky nectar that smells something like ripe roadkill on a hot summer day, lathered in fish oil and tar. But it attracts the plant’s primary food- millions upon millions of flies. The flies land and are trapped by the sticky sides of the bowl then digested by the plant. Pro tip; don’t ever step on one of these plants. They smell worse from the inside than out.

Hiccups’ senses were overwhelmed by the putrescence of it all and the constant buzzing of the trapped flies and other insects reverberated through the ground. It was pretty clear why the tracks had led him here, but being Hiccup he couldn’t help feeling sorry for that Rumblehorn. How miserable it must have been to go through this with such a delicate nose.

Breathing through his mouth he trudged on.

The trail wound through the heaviest parts of the patch and ended at the foot of a small cave, nestled in the side of a hill and surrounded by the sickening flowers. Stalactites and mites rose and fell at the mouth while two boulders above and three trees gave it an unwelcoming appearance.

Death’s Door, Hiccup thought, and had to admit the name was very fitting.

So the moment of truth had come; had the signs steered him right? Or into the clutches of a hungry Skullion? He took a step into the dark and it felt like an hour passed before his eyes adjusted.

“Huh,” He said aloud. “Not so bad, actually.”

Spacious but not too big, smooth rock for floor, and a steady current of fresh air coming from a naturally carved vent somewhere within were all very pleasant surprises. Towards the middle of the cave were broken flint rocks, some cherrywood, and the remnants of a firepit all covered in web.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Setting the saddlebag down, Hiccup spotted a stalactite trickling with water and below it an overflowing clay jar. He checked; clean and fresh. Just as he wondered if it was placed there recently, he saw towards the back wall of the cave some crates with lids off and in disarray, but they too were covered in cobwebs so it was clear they hadn’t been tampered with in a long time.

It was too dark to see back there so he groped amidst angry spiders and found an old yak hide blanket with some rags, all but completely eaten by moths. Of the other crates one had once held kindling (which he assumed was what was in the middle of the floor) and the other more flint rock, a small knife in a sheath, and a jug of some liquid. He popped the lid to taste and wrinkled his nose.

Hmmm. It was an excellent kit of survival goods, but one thing seemed to be missing- an axe. Perhaps the last visitor took it with him.

Taking one of the rags he wrapped it tight around a long cherry branch, dipped it in the liquid and struck flint stones together.

Sparks caught on the oil and the dark room flickered to life, walls aglow in warm yellow.

The young chieftain stood and took everything in under new light. Fresh water, a firepit with kindling and starters, a blanket to sleep on. The rock in front of him was smudged with coal that, when he studied at it hard enough, formed the image of a very ordinary looking Viking, wearing a helmet missing both its horns and a melancholy expression. Underneath was written “Grug, the Unfortunate.” He turned and saw the wall behind him.

The torch dropped.

“Dad,” he murmured, resting his hand on a fierce looking Viking with a fiery red beard of chalk.

The flame nearly died before he remembered to pluck the torch off the ground again. He held it high to see all that had been drawn and written.

There was the big drawing of Stoick and a lesser one of a one-armed, one-legged personality that still somehow managed to photobomb the bigger. It brought a smile to Hiccup’s face since he knew this workmanship was Gobber’s. His father was a horrible artist. He moved on to the text.

“To those stupid enough to set foot on Skullion island without a way to get back off… first of all what is wrong with you? Second, what’s done is done, use these supplies to survive and defend if necessary, and stay within the boundaries of the Dragonsbreath! We will check in and restock every six months and should you last that long you can board passage to Berk with these code words: “I am a m.oron.”

If you’re not such a m.oron, but… perhaps a young, bull headed and stubborn Viking intimidated by the duties you’ve inherited… or say…someone who’s had a spat with… an authoritative, figure, sit tight we’re coming for you. You don’t have to prove anything by taming these beasties, your father is horrendously proud of you for who you already are.

Signed Stoick the Vast, Chieftain of Berk

PS- I put clothespins on Skullcrusher’s nose so don’t chew me out

The words both warmed his soul and broke his heart. How he missed that booming voice. That shocking red beard with little grey streaks in it, bouncing up and down when he burst into a hearty laugh. Those strong, protective arms. Berk, for all its squabbles and shortcomings knew it was safe as long as Stoick stood watch. He protected his own. Heck, he was doing it right now.

“I wish you really were coming.”

The young Chieftain suddenly felt very small standing before that picture after the events of the last week. Very, very small indeed.

A nasty little voice began to whisper in his ear.

He would have fought to the death. He would have stayed behind to guard the village instead of chasing after Terrible Terrors. He wouldn’t- no, he wasn’t – fooled by Alvins charades. He would have had the strength to do what ought to have been done… What did you do again?

Hiccup looked into those proud, courageous eyes, silently pleading to hear just one word of wisdom or encouragement. Of course it didn’t come.

“Who were we kidding? I’m no Chief, dad. I’m just a boy who loves dragons.”

“Scree?!?”

A squeal bounced off the walls and was promptly followed by a thud as the satchel tipped over. Two purple legs and a tail wriggled wildly out the top while from somewhere inside came a growl.

“Trooper,” Hiccup stood, wiping his cheeks. “Trooper, you little terror you’ve pulled through,” He picked the bewildered dragon up. “Against all the odds! Well done.”

“Scree! Scree!” said Trooper in alarm, recognizing all that terrible scraping outside.

“Oh. Heh, yeah. We’re on Skullion and I have no food.”

The Terrible Terror turned to him with wide eyes a slit pupils. He sniffed the Viking carefully.

“But uh, there’s water, and we’re safe in here. They can’t smell us over the Dragonsbreath.”

Trooper sputtered some very unsatisfied comments in dragonese but climbed up to Hiccups’ shoulder none the less. His little tummy gargled.

Night was falling. The young man lay down that measly yak hide in front of the wall with Stoick. Somehow it helped him to feel more at ease. Trooper did him the favor of eating all the bugs and spiders out of it. He wasn’t willing to start a fire for fear that the dragons related smoke to humans and set the knife next to his bed in case of any midnight visitors. Dragonsbreath might fool a Skullion but that’s not the same as repelling it.

The little purple dragon drank every lick of water from the clay pitcher, then tried to see if he could eat wood. Twenty minutes of chewing with no success made him mad and he burned it into cinder before curling up next to the Viking.

Hiccup watched, stroking Trooper’s trilling body as everything turned to a bluish haze outside, then disappeared into inky black all together. In an instant that dreadful scraping ceased- and the silence that remained was far worse than the noise had ever been.

Throughout the night yowls, deep, unnatural howls, and things rampaging across the island rose and fell.

Every thump in the night sent Trooper to his feet. He would get up from where he was resting beside Hiccup’s head and walk the perimeter of the cave before coming back with a worried growl. It didn’t escape the Viking how his silhouette stood at the entrance, looked up, opened its wings, look back again and closed them.

Sighing Hiccup forced himself to rest his eyes. He missed Astrid. He missed Toothless.

On his last round Trooper climbed up a stalagmite and stared very hard at the ‘sleeping’ Viking.

Hiccup knew he would get out. He had to. Somehow, he had to. Alvin was right; no one would come looking for Berk because they didn’t even know what had happened. It was up to him to find and save them all.

And he could start right now.

“Go on Trooper.” Hiccup spoke softly to the thoughtful silhouette. “Get outta here. What do either of us gain if you stay?”

The creature trilled, eyes glinting. In a beat of wings he vanished beyond the mouth of the cave.

Hiccup rolled into a restless sleep- a smile playing at the edges of his mouth. Trooper’s survival, however menial it might have seemed to anyone else meant the world to him.

Hiccup's alive!

Aw, so touching. <3 It's such a thoughtful thing that Stoick (and Gobber) did there, making Skullion Island just a little bit safer and providing a way off. I'm glad little Trooper is okay too! He's fought so hard. ^^ I hope Trooper brings back some help, too. That would be really helpful! Now Hiccup just has to survive and figure out how to leave... Or be rescued. *Hopeful puppy eyes at a certain goofball, black cat-inspired, offspring of lightning and death*
