What is the purpose of those videos? Iri asked. Sure, they were kinda cute, but she didn't see what the big deal about them was, or why humans always wasted so much time on them.

Steve replied "Well they made me stop thinking about the gross things and then I remembered I showed you the gross things too so I thought it might help."

Iri sent an eye roll. I deleted them out of my memory. There are other things a robot can do than just look at other things. Oh, hey, can the hybrid delete memories at will?

Steve sent back "Well you see um....I kind of can't do that myself. I mean I can but then I don't remember why I deleted the thing and I look at it again out of curiosity. Worse is if I try it again it becomes an infinite loop of unpleasant. I'll just keep deleting it and looking at it and deleting it and looking at it and- Oh. The hybrid says he can't by the way. He really did end up with a lot of the worst of both worlds stuff. Though, maybe I shouldn't be the one to judge in this case. ....I should show HIM the cute videos."

((That's ok. Also I thought about something involving Iri and the whole leg thing. What if for a while she had to use the jetpack to hover around (probably with some tweaks from Rizzo or Iri to help it do that) because she might loose her thrusters at the same time she is growing legs))

Steve didn't end up sending anything else really helpful for the rest of the day. He had gotten too distracted by YouTube. That is right until it was almost time for Rizzo and Iri to call it quits for the day. Only then did Steve send something interesting. It started with Steve sending "I-Iri? Can you tell Rizzo I'm super creeped out right now?"

Iri had been around for a while, but it took her a few moments to realize that the emotion Steve was sending was fear. She'd never felt it very strongly, even as a human--just a tinge of worry about the way she seemed to be transitioning into a human. Of course! What happened?

She wasn't sure she wanted to actually know the answer to that question. As she strapped on her jetpack, she said, "Hey, Rizzo, Steve wanted me to tell you he's super creeped out."

((That could work, yeah!))

"Did he say why?" Asked Rizzo right as Steve started sending Iri pictures of the inside of Rizzo's house. The floor of which was covered wall to wall with unnerving drawings. Drawings of a spiderlike thing, more pictures of the pocket knife of doom, sketches of what looked to be the inside of a lab and other strange tools that could have been close ups of things in the pocket knife or they could have been their own things. With the poorly drawn nature of the pictures it was h.ard to tell. Who knows what other scenes were in the room that Steve hadn't sampled for Iri to see yet. The hybrid was still making them too. He had run out of paper and was now using toilet paper. Steve told Iri "I had just remembered that I was suppose to be watching the hybrid and when I stuck a camera in the house to check on him I found THIS. It's like something I saw in a horror movie! I'm so scared right now guys. W-Will he attack me if I disturb him? Soon Rizzo won't have any paper of any kind."

Woah, Iri said, then turned to Rizzo. "The hybrid covered the house in weird drawings. I think you're out of paper." Then she added to Steve, I don't think he'll hurt you. I mean, I don't know much about horror movies, but this isn't one, okay?

Meanwhile, she was working hard, identifying every drawing she could see. There was the pocketknife, from about twenty different angles. She recognized a few of the other drawings as tools from it, and the spidery thing appeared over and over as well. The effect of the whole thing really was a bit eerie, but she didn't think Steve needed to be quite that freaked out about it.

Not knowing he was mirroring Steve with his comment Rizzo asked "By covered the house in weird drawings you mean like in a horror movie or something?" Then he remembered that Iri hadn't seen a horror movie yet and said "Nevermind. I need to see the extent of the damage. If he has drawn on the walls I'm going to be very annoyed."

"Nah, he hasn't drawn on the walls yet. Right now he's using toilet paper." To Steve she added, If he runs out of toilet paper, don't let him draw on the walls. Rizzo wouldn't be very happy with that.

"Ok." Replied Steve nervously.

When Rizzo reached his house and opened the door he gasped and said "Oh....my.....god. Twitchy! WTF man!" The hybrid looked up like he was snapped out of a spell and said "Sorry. Do you not like it?"

Rizzo asked "Is that the last roll of toilet paper in the house?" The hybrid looked down at the roll in his hand then back at Rizzo before saying a quick "Maybe. IDon'tActullyknow." Rizzo checked and found that yes. It was the last roll of toilet paper. He came back frustrated and snapped "What is this? Why did you do this?" The hybrid shrugged and said "I don't know. It just felt right."

((Goshdarnit Twitchy. XD))

Iri glanced over some of the drawings, glad of the chance to see them in person, though still confused. Why did the hybrid draw so much? And why these things? Was it something programmed into him? Did he draw as part of his job? If so, wouldn't he be a little better at it? She shrugged and told Rizzo, "I'll go pick you up some toilet paper. I hear humans are pretty tired after a day of work and don't usually want to go run errands. Want some normal paper while I'm at it?"

"If you're offering yes please." Rizzo replied. He picked up one of the spider pictures and looked at it. Weird. It's legs didn't end right but he wasn't sure if it was actually suppose to look like it had claws or if Twitchy was just that bad at drawing. To be sure he asked "Hey. What is this?" The hybrid replied "I don't know. I just saw him in my dreams when I took a nap earlier. I think it's a spider of some kind but I'm not sure. ....I like spiders."

Iri glanced at the drawing. "There are some models of AI that could look like a spider. I can do a quick search while I go to the store."

She returned quickly, handing two grocery bags to Rizzo. "If it's a robot, I've got it narrowed down to a few hundred models it could be. A more detailed sketch would help more, but it's probably built for speed, only a few decades old. Could be made for stealth, depending on the size, but likely has pretty significant brainpower. Probably also a higher level AI, I'd say 4 or 5, though it could only be a 3."

((In a sci-fi webcomic I read, AIs are ranked on a scale of 1 to 10. You need a licence for anything more than level 3 or so. The higher levels are pretty much reserved for big, military spaceships. In this roleplay I'm thinking a 1-5 scale, licenses not required for higher levels. Iri's probably a 2-3. Steve might be, or might have been once, a 5, being a satellite and all. Also, let me know if I need to change anything about the spider AI.))

Iri shrugged. "Maybe if you have legs. It's definitely one of the fastest legged things out there, but that doesn't mean it can necessarily compete with this-" she gestured to her base, hovering over the ground- "or something like a jetpack."

"Show off." Said Rizzo with a chuckle. Wanting to be included in the conversation Steve added "I can fly. If you need to run from something I can help."

Rizzo told him "I'm sure you can." Humoring him. It wasn't that Rizzo doubted Steve could fly. He was just pretty sure he would be uncomfortable with taking up the offer unless it was a true emergency.

Twitchy added "ICanFlyToo!" And lifted off to hover. His jetpack flung papers even more everywhere.

Rizzo scolded "NOT IN THE HOUSE! NOT IN THE HOUSE! Only Iri is allowed to fly in the house."

"Oh. Sorry." Said the hybrid as he landed again.

Twitchy added "OhGoodQuestion. Am I?" Rizzo replied "Ya. He might as well. I don't think he has anywhere else to go at the moment and we can't just leave him out in the street." The human then turned to the hybrid and said "But NO MORE using up all the paper. Ok? Especially not the toilet paper. You may draw but please only use a few pages at a time and again DO NOT USE THE TOILET PAPER FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN USING THE TOILET. Understand?"

"Ok." The hybrid agreed. Rizzo turned back to Iri and half jokingly told her "What could possibly go wrong right?"

She did. From Steve. He sent "He's like a cat. Instead of sleeping all through any time of day or night the hybrid seems to take naps instead. Rizzo is very annoyed because he is trying to sleep. "Iri?....Iri?" Steve sent then he turned to the Hybrid who was the only other person awake at the time and said "I think she hung up on me."

"Who?" Asked Twitchy. Steve explained "Iri. You know. The one who is allowed to fly indoors? I hope I didn't annoy her too much."

"IWouldn'tWorry. SheSeemedNice." Twitchy replied before sitting down right beside Steve's landing gear to play with the grass.

Later....at the very earliest one could possibly consider it morning (A.K.A. 1:00 AM) Steve sent "Iri. I think the hybrid likes me." Along with a picture of the hybrid asleep leaning against one of Steve's landing gear. "He won't be sleeping for long of course but I had to snapshot the moment. He's cute really when you get past the escaped lab experiment vibe. You probably won't get this until a few hours yet but I just couldn't wait to send it. I hope that's not too annoying."

"Hey, was Steve designed to take humans to space, or is he just hollow for repairs?" Iri asked. She was considering the possibility that Steve's systems might be able to support Twitchy on their own. Hey Steve? Iri asked. Were you made to transport humans, or was the space inside you just for people to come in and repair you? Since he'd been a satellite meant for independant observation, it seemed unlikely to her that he'd had passengers, but it was always possible.

Steve replied "Well...you see...the place I got the modifications from didn't have a version for raccoons. But luckily raccoons are very good at living on the same stuff humans do so I just got the one for human passengers and called it good. I did however have to download a goat milk recipe for the food synthesizer because cow milk, which most humans around here prefer, doesn't really work well for baby raccoon tummys."

Steve started "This will be a long one. (sends a sound of throat clearing for dramatic effect even though he has no throat to clear) This story begins back when I still had a job though it was nearing the end of that time. Being part satellite I was connected to the internet and well....whatever your job is it isn't the only boring one. Imagine just.....floating out in space.....with the only job you have ether being to monitor things or to catch and send signals. This is what I did when I was doing the satellite part of my job. Needless to say being a shuttle was a lot more interesting.

Monitoring things isn't so bad. You find all sorts of cool new stuff regardless of whether you're looking at the sky or the Earth. But if you're just suppose to catch and send signals on their way for months at a time it can be boring.

Really boring.

This is how I first got addicted to the internet and....well...it's also how I first really got to know humans. All the best and the worst things were right there for me to see.

I wasn't interested in humans for a while. For every good thing they did there was an awful thing and that kind of put me off so I stayed in the stuff fellow AI's did for quite a while. But you know humans. You always end up running into them at some point they have such a way of getting into things. Plus a very large chunk of them are also addicted to the internet.

Her name was Kelly.

I didn't know I was talking to a human when I first met her in that chat room but I thought she had some interesting storys and again I was bored so even after I found out what she was we kept talking. Actually she was pretty surprised when she found out she was talking to a satellite too. She told me that most satellites were difficult to talk to because they always tried to redirect the conversation. I only found out later that it was suppose to be a joke. Anyway she would ask me questions about astronomy and in return she willingly shared her life with me. None of that eavesdropping from above stuff I was use to. Of the storys she told it was her job that caught the most of my attention. She was a wildlife rehabber. She sent me picture after picture of squirrels, raccoons, possums and other animals one can usually find running around outside. The job wasn't easy and it didn't pay much. She acknowledged that. Many times I asked her why she didn't pick a different one. She always told me she would never have another. Kelly had a....connection with these animals. Something that at the time I didn't understand but I was very curious about. I wanted to understand. I wanted to know why she would attach herself so strongly to these creatures that as far as I knew humans thought of as less than themselves. At the time I also considered them lesser. If humans were one step down from AIs these were two.

I couldn't take not knowing so I started visiting her when I was not on duty. Seeing her interact with them in person just made me more confused at first. She treated them like they were her children. I even wondered if maybe her parental instincts were malfunctioning.

By the way NEVER ask a human if their parental instincts are malfunctioning.

I'm pretty sure I offended her with that one.

Anyway after a while I kind of started to respect Kelly's commitment. Kelly believed that no being's worth should be measured only by the amount of work it can do. While at the time I was pretty sure she just believed that because she was a human there was something almost contagious about her fighting spirit and I was happy that she was happy. I was happy that she was happy. She had shown me happiness.

Our friendship went on for a few years but I was about to find out what having a long lifespan meant. One day she d.ied and I learned the opposite of happy.

Grief.

But more importantly she had left an orfaned litter of raccoons orphaned again. They would d.ie if someone didn't care for them and being Kelly's friend I couldn't just let that happen. It would be a betrayal. So I got myself modified and I took care of her raccoons. I hated them at first. They were messy and they chewed on my instruments and they would spread their food all over like they were trying to paint my walls. Plus when I first picked them up they were scared of me which hurt my feelings given that I was trying to help them. They annoyed my coworkers too given that I wasn't designed to repair myself. But ....over time we both started to grow on each other. When it eventually came time to release them I was sad to see them go and I felt empty for a few weeks. Yet I was also happy. It was strange. I was happy and sad at the same time. Then the sadness went away and I was just left with the feeling that I was lucky to have known the raccoons. ...And their original adopted mother. Kelly is the reason that when I got outmoded I chose to move into a human settled area. I just.... didn't fit in so well with my own kind any more."

((Kelly's name is similar to but not the same as the person I know. I didn't want to give her the exact name because....you know.....the character d.ies and the real one is alive which is awkward))

Steve replied "Well....It's partly because I don't have graspers anymore which are kind of needed to generally take care of baby animals. You know you have to bottle feed them, pull them out of places they shouldn't be. That kind of stuff. Plus I didn't really want to make Rizzo or anyone else I have met over the years clean my insides every day. Even people who are not creeped out by the idea of going inside a sentient spaceship would probably find it a bit of a nuisance. I did do it for a while. I did. But the animals are the reason I don't have graspers anymore. ....They chewed them up. All of them. Twice. And I still needed someone's help to clean me. I do hate to be a bother. On another note I haven't actually mentioned this whole thing to Rizzo yet. It's not a secret or anything it just never came up and it's not something I tend to bring up if someone doesn't lead into it or ask or something. Again, not a secret. It's just... really specific. Not something that comes up in regular conversations. You know?"

"So am I." Steve replied. Then for no reason he added "While we're on the topic of raccoons. They're funny creatures really. They have hands and instead of just sniffing around like most animals do they also touch everything. And I do mean EVERYTHING. It's like they want to play patty cake with the world." He sent and old video of one of his past raccoons along with it. It really did look like it was trying to play patty cake. In this case with a wall. He added "I think they might even be more "I want to touch everything"-y than human children."
