Portal 2:Long Time Passed
"You....teleported." Said GLaDOS like this was weird news even for her. She continued "That explains a few things. But that brings up an important question. Are you actually stuck in here with me or did you just come in here to mess with me?"
Wheatley whispered to Chell "Oh god. She's not just been captured by GLaDOS. She's in her bloody room! This is so much worse than the situation we got you out of! How in the world do we manage this? Have any plans?"
Chell looked around trying to peace an idea together. She ran into the nearest office and grabbed a pencil and some paper. With this she drew a turret and wrote the word nurotoxin then crossed them out and put a question mark beside it. Wheatley picked up that she was asking him about her plan and told her "I don't know if we'll have enough time." Chell gave him a determined look. They had to try. If they went in there when GLaDOS still had access to nurotoxin and turrets they would almost certainly d.ie. Or....Chell would almost certainly d.ie. Chell had after all only survived the first time by the skin of her teeth and by a lot of luck. They could only hope that if GLaDOS was using Harper as bait she wouldn't k.ill her until she had Chell.
Meanwhile GLaDOS commented "Yes I heard you were worried about that the first time. No need to make such a big deal out of it. You have a limited lifespan anyway and would eventually d.ie with or without my intervention." she reached down with a claw to pick the girl up and continued "Besides. I thought you liked science. Science isn't really science without a chance of death."
((For we both know GLaDOS's view of what science was at the time was very twisted))
GLaDOS held the girl just barely gentle enough to avoid causing damage (other then maybe a few bruises). For you see she didn't trust the girl's word alone when she had said she was stuck and decided to test it by making her uncomfortable.
"No." GLaDOS replied "I think you're going to regret your past rudeness. But hey. If you've got even half the skill as the silent menace at least you'll get a good mark on your test results. Unless of course that skill is from her more....obnoxious side." The claw holding the girl left the room with her. It didn't take a rocket scientist to know it was taking her to the test chambers.
Wheatley and Chell find their way to the turret assembly line. Along the way they rescue a weird turret from the turret redemption line which is right by the turret assembly line but does the opposite thing.
The turret tells them to get mad, not to make lemonade, some story from mythology and then she tells them "Her name is Caroline. Remember that." Without any context as to WHO is Caroline. Unable to do anything else with an emancipation grid in the way they leave the turret on a walkway hopeing they can come back and help it out further later then they get to work messing up the turret assembly line. Something that turns out easier than expected with the help of a few portals.
GLaDOS nearly drops the girl then and there but just manages to avoid doing that and instead drops her into a hastily put together enclosure of wall pannles before looking at her burnt claw in confusion and saying "That...actually hurt. How did you do that?"
Chell and Wheatley raced to the nurotoxin generator for Chell had picked up the pace when she heard Harper and Wheatley followed.
"Why did they even build that stuped thing." Thought Chell as she and Wheatley started looking for a way to destroy it or shut it down. While Wheatley tried "hacking" Chell took note of a laser being used to cut pannles into the right size and got a marvelous idea. With some cleverly placed portals she cut the pipes on the nurotoxin generator then held her breath....just in case. It worked even better than Chell had expected. An automated voice said "Warning! Nurotoxin pressure has reached dangerously unlethal levels." then the whole thing started to cave in on itself like a popcan in a high pressure chamber and then it fell down the pit it had been suspended over. Wheatley called "HA! The tube's broken! We can ride it straight to her! I can't hold on! Come on! Come on we have to go!" Chell ran over and jumped into the broken vacuum tube right as Wheatley lost grip on his management rail and also flew into it.
As they wizzed along Chell thought "Comeing your way Harper. If you know what we did don't tell her."
"You BURNED her claw? Heh. Serves her right." Thought Chell followed by a cuss and "So um....there's an obvious trap in front of me right now and I literally have no other way to go but through it. OOooh I know she's going to mock me for this. Get this, get this. It's a completely bare chamber with a door in it that says GLaDOS emergency shutdown and cake dispensary. Keep unlocked. WTF? She's going to think I'm an idiot for jumping in there. There's no way she actually thinks that's going to work the way it was intended. Well I hope her plan isn't to crush me with the walls because I am 100% screwed if it is. Cross your fingers."
GLaDOS told the girl "Well, whatever it is if you think that action is going to stop me from testing you, it won't. In fact I dare say I'm even MORE interested." To Harper the AI seemed to pause and stare off into space for a bit. What she was really doing was using wall pannles to corral Chell into one of those glass rooms that just has a toilet in it and nothing else for some reason. Through speakers near that room she told Chell "I honestly, TRULY didn't think you'd fall for that."
"I knew you were going to mock me. I didn't fall for it! It was just too in my way to not come in here." Chell thought knowing the AI couldn't hear her anyway. While the walls closed in GLaDOS continued "In fact, I devised a much more elaborate trap further ahead for when you got through this easy one."
Chell thought "&#@# she is going to squish me! She's going to squish me!"
The floor started to open.
"Ok. No. She's NOT going to squish me. Thank god." Thought Chell both relieved to know she wasn't going to get crushed and scared of what might happen instead.
She instinctively tried to stay on the level she was on for as long as possible not really wanting to go down that hole even though she knew there was no way around it. As this was happening GLaDOS told her "If I'd known you'd let yourself get captured this easily I would have just dangled a turkey leg on a rope from the ceiling."
"Ya ya I'm a trapped animal I get the idea." Thought Chell. As it got to the point where there was only a sliver of floor left to stand on GLaDOS added "Actually. Now that I think about it. I might not have a turkey but I did wave a chicken at you so it's kind of the same deal. You probably don't get the joke because you didn't see how she acted when she found out where she was but trust me. The joke fits."
Chell thought "HEY! Harper's not a chicken! You keep your insults flung MY direction. Leave her alone!" Right before she lost her footing and finally fell into the glass room. It started moving.
GLaDOS told her "Well. It was nice catching up. Let's get down to business. I hope you brought something stronger than a portal gun this time. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'll become the immediate past president of the staying alive club. Ha ha."
"Ha ha ha." Thought Chell back sarcastically.
The glass room entered GLaDOS' room and the walls closed up behind it.
GLaDOS returned her attention to the other girl and said "Guess who I have now?" as she dared pick up the girl again to drop her back in the room. GLaDOS planned to let the girl watch Chell d.ie given how she had claimed Chell would make her sorry earlier.
GLaDOS told Chell "How cute. She'd rather d.ie with you. Well who am I to argue against that. Seriously though. Goodbye." GLaDOS set down turrets all around the glass enclosure. Only....something wasn't right about them. First of all they looked funny but they also didn't have any bullets and exploded instead of shooting. The multiple small explosions cracked the glass but didn't fully smash it.
"Oh. You were busy back there." GLaDOS said. Chell gave her a wide "Yup. I did that." kind of grin. GLaDOS continued "Well. I suppose we could just sit here in this room and glare at each other until somebody drops dead but I have a better idea. It's your old friend. Deadly nurotoxin. If I were you I'd take a deep breath and hold it." GLaDOS shoved the end of a tube into the glass enclosure but instead of the familiar green fog of death there came first Wheatley's voice then Wheatley as he bounced down the tube in a plethora of "Ow"s then smashed the enclosure as he dropped to the ground. GLaDOS looked at the core in surprise, then at Chell, then she said "I hate you so much."
An automated voice said "Warning. Central core is eighty percent corrupt."
GLaDOS commented "That's funny. I don't feel corrupt. In fact, I feel pretty good."
The automated voice continued "Alternate core detected."
"Oh! That's me they're talking about." said Wheatley.
The automated voice continued "To initiate a core transfer please deposit substitute core in receptacle."
Hearing this GLaDOS said "Core transfer? Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me."
Wheatley told Chell "I've got an idea! Do what it says, plug me in!"
GLaDOS snapped "Do NOT plug that little idiot into MY mainframe."
Wheatley insisted "No. You SHOULD plug that little idiot into the mainframe!"
GLaDOS snapped "Don't you DARE plug him in!"
Wheatley insisted "Plug me in! Plug me in!"
GLaDOS almost hissed "Don't...do it."
Chell looked GLaDOS right in the eye with probably the most evil grin she had ever had in her life then plugged Wheatley into the receptacle.
The automated voice said "Substitute core accepted. Substitute core, are you ready to start the procedure."
"Yes." Wheatley replied.
The automated voice said "Corrupted core. Are you ready to start the procedure."
"NO!" Replied GLaDOS.
"Oh yes she is." Said Wheatley.
GLaDOS replied "Nonononono!"
The automated voice said "Stalemate detected. Transfer procedure can not continue."
"Yes!" Said GLaDOS happily.
Wheatley yelled "Pull me out! Pull me out! Pull me out! Pull me out!"
The automated voice continued "...unless a stalemate associate is present to push the stalemate resolution button."
Changing his mind Wheatley said "Leave me in! Leave me in! Go press it!"
"Don't...do it." Warned GLaDOS as some of the wall pannles opened up to reveal a room with a button.
"Yes. You do it!" Said Wheatley.
Chell turned to Harper and thought "We need to press that button at all costs!"
GLaDOS told them "Don't press that button. You don't know what you're doing."
Chell made a run for it and was catapulted backward from a floor pannle that flipped up to block her.
"Not so fast." Said GLaDOS. She continued "Think about this. You need to be a trained stalemate associate to push that button. You're unqualified."
Wheatley said "Don't listen to her. It IS true that you don't have the qualifications. But you've got something more important than that. A finger, with which to push that button so that she won't k.ill us."
Chell portaled her way into the button room but now she had to get around the wall of pannles that GLaDOS kept raising right around said button.
"This is.....really....annoying!" Chell thought as she went one direction then the other trying to outrun the pannles.
((Worked on this post while the internet was out as the page was already open during the crash so I was able to continue typing. Couldn't spell check it or post it till now of course though))
Chell grins at Harper.
GLaDOS lets out an "Ahh!" as the automated voice tells Chell and Harper to return to the core transfer bay. It also says "Stalemate resolved." then GLaDOS although still awake goes limp with a few sparks.
Wheatley called "Here I go!" Then paused and said "Wait what if this hurts? What if it REALLY hurts?" Oooh I didn't think of that."
GLaDOS told him "Oh it will. Believe me it will."
Wheatley asked her "Are you-Are you just saying that, or is it really gonna hurt? You're just saying that aren't you? No, you're not. It is going to hurt isn't it?" as he disappeared below the floor. Wheatley continued "Exactly how painful are we tAAAAAAHHHH!"
Now Chell was wondering if it really did hurt or if Wheatley had just worked himself into a fright like a kid freaking out before being given a shot. Well however it felt to Wheatley it was definitely painful to GLaDOS because when the pannles surrounded her and the procedure started the AI let out the most awful, drawn out scream Chell had ever heard in her entire life. Seriously. Chell had to cover her ears.
"I bet you are." Chell thought. "You immediately got caught by GLaDOS. That had to be terrifying." She paused then even though it was a horrible time for a joke she thought "You know when I offered for you to see a monster up close I may have jinxed this whole thing with my bad wording but you know you didn't have to do it TWICE right?"
Chell mentally told her "Harper. There's nothing in the world that could make me hate you. I was just a little embarrassed is all."
Suddenly there was a call of "Wowww! Check me out partner! Er- partners. There's two of you. Should've used the plural."
Chell looked up to see Wheatley's head on GLaDOS' body. GLaDOS' head meanwhile was laying off to the side a bit.
"I'm so glad human bodys can't do that." Thought Chell. "Also why does his head open up like a flower now? That's both cool and creepy at the same time."
Wheatley called "We did it! I'm in control of the whole facility now!" He played with the wall pannles and continued "Whoa h.o h.o! Would you look at this. Not too bad, eh? Giant robot. Massive! It's not just me right? I am bloody massive aren't I?"
"Oh totally." Thought Chell. "Do I look like a mouse to you right now or is the size comparison even worse? Harper translate that please. Also, high five? We didn't d.ie!"
"Oh totally. So much so it's funny even. It's adorable." Wheatley replied to the question about size.
Chell meanwhile thought to Harper "It's Wheatley. How bad could a Wheatley GLaDOS be?" for she did not have Harper's ability to know that something bad was coming. Chell looked up at Wheatley and did a kind of "Ahem. We were leaving." gesture. Wheatley said "Oh! Right the escape lift. I'll call it now. There we go. Lift called." An elevator rose out of the ground. Chell gestured to Harper to follow her then entered the lift. Wheatley commented "I know I already said you looked small but seriously look how small you are down there. I can barely see you. Very tiny and insignificant."
"Oh. Wow. You can barely see me? I guess the size difference really is huge." Thought Chell.
Wheatley continued talking while Harper and Chell just kind of stood in the lift. "I knew it was gonna be cool to be in charge of everything but...WOW is this cool!" Confetti, defective turrets and cubes flung through the room as Wheatley played around. "Check this out! I'm a bloody genius now!" Wheatley said before saying something in another language then continuing "I don't even know what I just said. But I can find out!" Chell waved and knocked on the glass of the elevator. Wheatley said "Oh! Sorry! No, the lift. Yes sorry. I keep forgetting." The lift started slowly moving upward. Wheatley told them "This body is amazing! Seriously! I can't get over how small you are. But I'm huge!" Wheatley started laughing. At first Chell was happy for him but there was something in that laugh that started to turn a little....creepy. Suddenly the elevator stopped as the laughter did and Wheatley said "Actually... Why do we have to leave right now?" The elevator went back to the ground. Chell was immediately uncomfortable. "B-Because that was the plan?" she thought.
"You jinxed it just like I jinxed the GLaDOS thing." Chell thought. She attempted to open the elevator doors since she did not like the way they cornered her but they would not open. "We're stuck." she thought to Harper. Meanwhile Wheatley replied almost as if he only half heard Harper "Do you have ANY idea how good this feels? I did this! Tiny little Wheatley did this!"
GLaDOS spoke up from her place on the floor "You didn't do anything. They did all the work." For some reason the room had gone dark. All but the red light from the hole in the floor where the core transfer machinery was. Wheatley replied "Oh really? That's what the three of you think is it? Well, maybe it's time I did something then."
"Why are you pulling us into this? We didn't say that!" Chell thought. She made another attempt to open the elevator doors but of course the attempt did not yield any results. She stopped to watch in horror as a claw grabbed GLaDOS' head and pulled her back into the core transfer machinery.
GLaDOS asked "What are you doing?" followed by a few terrified "No!"s before she disappeared under the floor. It was enough for Chell to feel kind of bad for her despite everything. She'd never heard the AI sound so scared.
"Ay! Get offa me!" Wheatley snapped.
Wheatley calmly told her "Oh don't worry. I will. I will. Just give it a second." There was a "ding" and one of the claws in the core transfer machinery brought out a small brown object. Wheatley told them "See that? That is a potato battery. It's a toy. For children. And now SHE lives in it." he turned the battery to reveal the wires and yellow eye for the girls to see. Chell took a step back and put a hand to her mouth in shock.
((Yay for out of order game dialog. It just fit is all.))
"What do you think?" GLaDOS asked. Irritated. Wheatley meanwhile said "OW! What was that for? You didn't like her ether! Oh and don't think I'm not onto you too, lady. You know what you are? Selfish. I've done nothing but sacrifice to get us here and what have you sacrificed? Nothing. Zero. All you've done is boss me around. Well now who's the boss? Who's the boss? It's me."
GLaDOS hissed "I know you."
"Sorry, uuuuh huh... What?" Asked Wheatley. GLaDOS explained "The engineers tried everything to make me....behave. To slow me down. Once they even attached an intelligence dampening sphere on me. It clung to my brain like a tumor. Generating an endless stream of terrible ideas."
Wheatley interrupted "No. Not listening! Not listening!" GLaDOS continued regardless "It was YOUR voice."
Wheatley snapped "No! No! You're lying. You're lying." in the tone of someone who was in the prossess of having a really embarrassing moment made public.
Perhaps reveling in the fact that this was bugging Wheatley GLaDOS told him "Yes. You're the tumor. You're not just a regular m.oron. You were designed to be a m.oron."
Wheatley lost it. "I AM NOT A M.ORON!!!" He yelled as he hit potato GLaDOS against the elevator cracking but not shattering the glass. Chell flinched and ducked for the small amount of cover she could find. GLaDOS yelled back "YES YOU ARE! YOU'RE THE M.ORON THEY BUILT TO MAKE ME AN IDIOT!"
Wheatley threw potato GLaDOS through the glass. She landed right in between Chell's feet.
"WELL HOW ABOUT NOW! NOW WHO'S A M.ORON!" Yelled Wheatley. Chell put her hands over her head the way people do when taking shelter from a tornado to protect her head while Wheatley started beating the elevator into the floor.
"Could a m.oron PUNCH...YOU...INTO...THIS...PIT?! HUH? COULD A M.ORON DO THAT?!" There was a pause then the elevator slid a little downward on its own.
"Uh oh." thought Chell
"Uh oh." Said Wheatley out loud.
Then the elevator fell.
Wheatley looked down the hole and said "Oops. Didn't mean to do that." for he had just been trying to make a point and had not actully been trying to lose a potental test subject.
Chell was a little busy. She knew that she had to get out of the falling elivator or else it would crush her when she reached the bottom of this giant pit that from the looks of it seemed to go on for miles. Trying not to get too cut up by the glass she climbed out and shoved herself away from it. She did not need to rescue GLaDOS for the potato had fallen out the elivator on her own. Now they were just falling together.....awkwardly. ...While Chell had to take GLaDOS' sass.
"Oh. Hi. ........So how are you holding up? Because I'm a potato!" Said GLaDOS.
"Yaaaaa sorry about that." Thought Chell. For once she felt like GLaDOS had a right to be angry with her so she just took the flack without even an eye roll. There was a slow clap sound then GLaDOS said "Oh good. My slow clap proccessor made it into this thing. So we have that. ...........Since it doesn't look like we're going anywhere- Well. We are going somewhere. Alarmingly fast actully. But since we're not busy other then that he's a couple of facts. He's not just a regular m.oron. He's the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbist m.oron who ever lived. And you just put him in charge of the entire facility."
The slow clap proccessor went off again. "Good that's still working." GLaDOS said. There was silence for a second then GLaDOS asked "Hey, just in case this pit isn't actully bottumless, do you think maybe you could unstrap one of those longfall boots of yours and shove me into it? Just remember to land on one foot."
Ok. THIS was worth an eyeroll. "Land on one foot? From this hight? Are you kidding me?" Chell thought. The next thing she knew she crashed through some boards and was knocked out.
As all that was happening Wheatley turned to the girl and asked "Did you not see her fall down that hole? Cuz she and GLaDOS just fell down that hole."
"Ok. Not gonna lie. You're freaking me out. Is-is that normal for you? Did you eat something radioactive or something?" Wheatley asked. He paused to think about what he just said and mumbled "No wait. That's not actually how radioactive things work is it. That's cartoons. That's only in cartoons."
Wheatley told her "Ah no. Now that's just rude isn't it. That is 100% rude. A real low you're hitting there. You should be ashamed of yourself."
Wheatley paused and broke eye contact as if this had actually got through to him for a second. But shortly after that he shook it off and said "Ah that Wheatley was kind of a pushover wasn't he? Look if this is about the whole smashing the elevator into the floor thing I didn't actually mean to do that. See, there really aren't many test subjects left and to just lose one like that is ve(nervous chuckles half through this word)ry embarrassing for me. She may have lived though. She may have lived. She does have longfall boots. I don't know if she can get back up here if she did live but I'm hopeing so. According to the records she was AMAZING at testing. It'd be kind of a shame if I didn't get to have a little fun with her too."
"Oh. WHAT? Now that's just not fair at all. Where are you?" Wheatley asked.
"Um....because I'm the boss and I'm telling you to?" Said Wheatley unable to find an actually good reason.
Somewhere down below Chell opened her eyes. As they came into focus she saw a crow carrying off a very familiar potato. "Don't eat that!" thought Chell. She tryed to get up but her body was so sore she couldn't. She gritted her teeth and hoped it was all just bruses and cuts and not any broken bones. "Harper. Alive. Bird took GLaDOS." she thought weakly.
Wheatley started lifting pannles to look under them wondering if Harper might be hiding somewhere.
Meanwhile Chell thought "Uhg. This place is as much of a mess as I am right now." She winced as she struggled to her feet. Her body was covered in cuts from the glass of the elevator and her jumpsuit was both dirty and torn. Her whole body was sore and she knew it would probably be tomorrow morning too. Assumeing she lived to tomorrow that is.
Wheatley looked down and said "Oh there you are! Come here you. We've got testing to do. Oh hey that rhymes!" He made a grab for her and continued "Well. I guess not come here since I'll be taking you further away from me but you get the idea."
Meanwhile Chell let out a mental cuss and thought "My feet were JUST drying off gosh d.arnet! Well. At least it's not as deep as the other pool I had to wade through."
Wheatley told her "That's ok. All you really need is a working brain really. ....And legs. ....And arms." Unlike GLaDOS when Wheatley managed to grab the girl he held her gently but firmly. This was mostly because he had no reason to make her more uncomfortable then being in a giant claw would by nature whereas GLaDOS had been putting unneeded pressure on her on purpose.
Meanwhile Chell starts climbing upward with her portals. She has no idea where she is going but she knows up is the only way that will give her any chance at good results. She doesn't even know that the path she has chosen will reunite her with GLaDOS.
"Ok. Making me uncomfortable here. Don't know why." Wheatley grumbled. He hesitated to take the girl anywhere for a second then lifted her a little higher and sent her towards the test chambers.
Chell walked through an underground building. It looked like the entrance to something. Suddenly a prerecorded message started talking to her. "Welcome, gentlemen to Aperture science. Astronauts, war heroes, Olympians. You're here because we want the best, and you are it."
Chell paused. THAT was a voice she hadn't heard in a long LONG time but she did recognize it after thinking about it for a bit. Cave Johnson. Chell hadn't known him well but every test subject that had been in Aperture before things went down knew the sound of his voice. Mostly thanks to things like this. Man was this a foggy old memory to be recalling. Chell remembered that he d.ied somehow before GLaDOS' creation. That's about all she knew. Well that and the fact that he founded Aperture and ran it for most of the time it was running. Well....maybe that wasn't true anymore. How long had she slept? Oh well. It wasn't important. Cave Johnson said "Who's ready to make some science?"
then a female voice replied "I am." Cave Laughed and talked about how he owned the place. Then he introduced the woman's voice as Caroline. Chell paused again. "Oh ya. I remember Caroline." she thought bringing up a memory so foggy it could barely be considered a memory. Literally everyone who knew Cave Johnson knew Caroline. Chell remembered two things and two things alone about Caroline. 1. Everyone who met her liked her and talked about how nice she was. 2. She kind of just disappeared some time after Johnson's death. There wasn't any mention of her d.ieing or anything. People just suddenly started talking about her in the past tense and Chell even remembered being shushed when she dared ask what had happened. It was weird. She thought about that one "different" turret who told Chell to remember someone's name was Caroline. She wondered if the turret was talking about this Caroline. No. It couldn't have been. There's no way a defective turret could live long enough in upper Aperture to have known Caroline. What DID happen to Caroline? Chell supposed she would probably never know. She had no idea how wrong she was.
