Portal 2:Long Time Passed
"It was the way he faked me out. Not my fault." Chell thought back.
Wheatley hurried them past a turret out of reach in a tube and they continued following the rail. When they reached a specific hallway Wheatley suddenly became nervous. He told them "Probably ought to bring you up to speed on something right now. In order to escape we're going to have to go through HER chamber. And she will probably k.ill us. If-If she's awake."
"You don't know if GLaDOS is awake or not?" Thought Chell. To her the answer was obvious given the dead cameras in the test chambers and all the plant life. GLaDOS would never have let Aperture fall into this condition if she had any power to stop it. Wheatley continued "If you want we could call it quits. We could just sit here. Forever. That's an option. Option A. Sit here. Do nothing. Option B. Go through there and if she's alive she'll almost certainly k.ill us."
Chell thought "Pttt. I went in there when I KNEW she was online. Like this will stop me!" then started approaching the door. Wheatley immediately panicked and seeing as Chell was carrying him he tried to stop her. "Okay. I'm gonna lay my cards on the table. I don't wanna do it. I don't want to go in there. Don't! Don't go in there! She Sh-Sh-" The door opened and apon seeing that GLaDOS was not online Wheatley immediately calmed down. "She's off! She's off. Panic over. She's off. All fine. On we go."
Chell gave Harper a "LOL. I knew it." Kind of expression and thought "Wanna see a monster up close?" before continuing into the room. As they approached the lifeless form Wheatley said "There she is... What a nasty peace of work she was. Honestly. Like a proper maniac. Do you know who ended up, uh, do you know who ended up taking her down in the end? You're not going to believe this. A human."
Chell couldn't help but snort at the irony of the moment. She knew who did it. SHE was that human.
Wheatley continued "I know. I know. I wouldn't have believed it ether. Apparently this human escaped and uh...nobody's seen him since."
Chell gave Harper a look and thought "Should we tell him? I don't want to scare the little guy."
"No idea." Wheatley said "But there was an explosion involved."
Chell thought "I ripped personality spheres off her and dropped them in an incinerator. I have no idea why that caused an explosion. Also now that I know Wheatley I'm a little creeped out by my own actions because I'm pretty sure the personality spheres were intelligent in their own right. All but that creepy purple one. I think it was dead before I got there." ((The purple one she is talking about is that morality sphere. A.K.A. the first one Chell pulled off))
The group creeped past dead GLaDOS Chell in particular trying not to touch anything even before Wheatley told them not to touch anything. They walked around the incinerator entrance to which Chell thought "Oh look. There it is." then partway down a flight of stairs that were broken.
"Jump!" Wheatley said then looked at the hole and said "Actually looking at it, that is quite a distance isn't it?" He seemed to think about it for a while then he continued "Ok you know what? Go ahead and jump. You've got braces on your legs. No braces on your arms though. Gonna have to rely on the old human strength to keep a grip on the device and by extension me. So do make sure to maintain a grip-"
Chell jumped and Wheatley screamed but she was still holding the portal device and Wheatley when she landed.
Wheatley said "Oh- Still held! Still being held. That's a great job. You've applied the grip. We're all fine. That's tremendous." he paused and looked up. "Wait. Does SHE have braces on her legs too? Can she get down here?"
((He means Harper))
"Hello? Can you get down here?" Wheatley asked. "Do we need to find another way?"
"AH! What? How?" Wheatley started while Chell join in on the laughter. Wheatley said "Well...um...alright then. Moving on. Continue that way." They went the direction Wheatley nodded. As they hit a place where the path spanned over a deep but narrow pit Wheatley said "AH! I-Sorry I just looked down. I do not recommend it." A little later he did it again. "AH! I've just done it again." Finally after all that they reached the main breaker room which Wheatley labled as such. It was a narrow circular room full of switches. Wheatley told them to look for a switch that said escape pod then said "Don't touch anything else. Not interested in anything else. Don't TOUCH anything else. Don't even look at anything else. Just-well obviously you have to look at everything else to find ESCAPE POD but as soon as you've looked at something that doesn't say escape pod look at something else. Look at the next thing."
"I get it Wheatley." Thought Chell stopped listening to him at that point until he told her to plug him in. She did.
"Let there be light." Said Wheatley as the lights flickered on. He continued "That's uh... god. I was quoting god." Suddenly the platform turned a bit. Chell stumbled thanks to the sudden movement and looked down at her feet. Wheatley noted "Oh! Look at that! It's turning. Ominous. But probably fine. As long as it doesn't start moving up." Of course shortly after that it started moving up flicking ALL of the switches as it went. Wheatley tried to stop it but it only moved up faster. Suddenly they were in GLaDOS' room again. Chell looked at Harper with a "Well that could have been worse. At least it didn't explode." when an automated voice said "Powerup initiating." and the once dead queen of Aperture started to rise.
"Oh god! I jinxed it!" Thought Chell. "So much worse than exploding! So much worse than exploding!" Wheatley did his best to cancel the power up but it was clear very fast that his efforts weren't going to do anything.
"Gee. Thanks for that." Thought Chell. "You know the irony is hitting me enough as it is. Well anyway. Nice knowing you Harper. It's been fun." Wheatley told them "Okay don't panic! Alright? Stop panicking!"
"Stop panicking?! THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO PANIC!" Thought Chell. Wheatley continued "I can still stop this!"
"No you can't." Thought Chell. "But I deeply respect your optimism." Wheatley tried and failed to hack the terminal in a way that would have made Chell want to facepalm if she wasn't so focused on GLaDOS.
The AI was no longer on the ground now. She was up on the ceiling where she had been built to be. Suddenly she snapped to attention with a look that made Chell swear the AI could see right into her soul.
"Hello!" Wheatley called. Hopeing that acting friendly might ease GLaDOS' er...murderyness at least a little bit. GLaDOS however stayed focused on Chell. "Oh....it's YOU." She said so coldly it made Chell shiver. Chell thought to Harper "We're screwed."
Wheatley meanwhile gave Chell a look of disbelief. "You KNOW her?" He asked. Chell gave him a "Ya. And that's not a good thing." Kind of a smile before quickly returning her attention to GLaDOS for not paying attention to what someone like her was doing could be a deadly mistake. GLaDOS told her "It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been very busy being dead. You know. After you MURDERED me."
Chell flinched and thought. "Yup. We're screwed."
"You WHAT?!" Wheatley asked. GLaDOS snatched them in her claws and lifted them into the air. Chell dared not move. Struggling would probably mean a worse death. And it would also give GLaDOS the satisfaction of knowing how scared she was. Chell put on her best pokerface. She would NOT give her that satisfaction. Wheatley wasn't nearly as good at keeping his calm. He yelled "Nononononono!" Chell wished she could tell him to stay calm. She knew his behavior could only end badly for him. GLaDOS held Chell at eye level and told her "Okay. Look. We both said a lot of things you're going to regret." She made even more direct eye contact with Chell as if she knew her next action would upset the human then gave Wheatley a nasty pinch. Sparks flew and the core went silent. Chell's eyes widened and she strained to see where GLaDOS had thrown him. She didn't k.ill him did she? GLaDOS continued talking as she started to move Chell over the opening to the incinerator. "But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster."
"What? I'M the monster? You hurt everyone who comes near you! F$#@ You GLaDOS!" Thought Chell fiercely as she tried not to think about the fact that GLaDOS could easily crush her here and now if she wanted to. Actually. Why didn't she? Now nearing the opening to the incinerator Chell thought "Oh. That's why." But what GLaDOS said did not fit what Chell was assuming. "I will say though that since you went through all the trouble of waking me up you must really really love to test." the entrance to the incinerator opened but it wasn't lit up like it had been when Chell had messed with it. Chell realized it must not be active and then realized what GLaDOS was going to do.
Chell's eyes went wide yet again. "$#%#. No. Just k.ill me now please."
GLaDOS continued "I love it too. There's just one thing we need to take care of first."
"Seriously GLaDOS. No. Do not. DO NOT! I'll make you regret it!" Thought Chell. She knew GLaDOS couldn't hear her thoughts like Harper but it made her feel a little better to think through her stress. GLaDOS dropped her down the hole.
GLaDOS turned her attention to this other girl and said "Don't worry. She is alive...for now. She's just down there to fetch something before heading to the test chambers. You're welcome to join her if you wish. I can always use more test subjects." the door to the incinerator opened again. And again it was dark hinting that Chell was probably right when she had figured firey death was not at the bottom for once. In fact Chell soon confermed that by thinking "Still alive. I'm not sure how happy I am about that though."
Some distance away Wheatley was still kind of seeing stars. He blinked, remembered what happened and then shut his eye and pretended to be dead hopeing GLaDOS wouldn't notice. He had no idea how to get out of the room. As he heard the conversation he thought "Don't do it. She'll trap you. And she probably won't even let you two test together. Team testing is kind of rare."
"No I don't think I will. If you want to be with her then join her." GLaDOS replied. Then she asked "Why are you glowing? That's not normal. You should probably see someone about that."
Wheatley called "Don't do anything crazy! If you do something crazy she'll do something crazy!" GLaDOS turned to him and said "I thought I got rid of you." then raised a pannle above him like she was planning to smash him.
"Ah! Nonononono!" Yelled Wheatley again.
GLaDOS said "I take that as a no on the testing then? That's too bad. You would have produced interesting results I'm sure. If you at any point wish to change your mind you are welcome to do so."
Wheatley meanwhile sighed in relief then told his saviour "Thank you. Thank you thank you. I won't forget that. Now then. About your sister. She's the one who originally k.illed GLaDOS right? That means she can't be too easy to k.ill and that in turn means we might have a chance to save her. Just to be clear I'm not really suppose to be taking test subjects away from GLaDOS but you did save me and I'm sure Chell has already done way more than her quota of testing so I think I can bend the rules a little here. Put me on a management rail if you can and we'll see what we can do about getting Chell out GLaDOS' terrifying clutches. Sound like a plan?"
"No. I only know a little about what's on the papers and what you've told me." He replied.
Wheatley told her "Nononono. Don't cry. Please? Look at me. Look at me. We can do this. Understand? Don't get me wrong it will be dangerous and there is a very high likelihood that we will all d.ie. But the important thing is that there is a chance we won't. And there is a chance however small that we can both save your sister and get out of it alive as well. I just need to find a weak spot in you know who's security. She doesn't control everything equally and given that things are in need of repairs I might actually be able to open a hole in one of the test chambers if we are lucky. Cross your fingers. Ya?"
"What? Ah! What are you doing?" He asked a little freaked out even though the action wasn't causing him any harm.
"Wowe." Wheatley says. "You know I thought I'd seen everything one can in Aperture. I was wrong." He nodded and said "Right then. Off to rescue Chell." then darted off along the management rail. On his first successful attempt to peak into the test chambers without GLaDOS noticing he saw Chell doing something with lasers. It was not however a good place to rescue Chell though as there was no walkway behind the spot. Still he raced back to his Chell rescue partner and told her "Good news. I now know two things for sure. 1. There are some specific places where I can indeed move a pannle without GLaDOS noticing and 2. Chell is still alive. Looked very annoyed with the situation which is....understandable but alive."
Chell meanwhile had managed to spot Wheatley. She tried not to let the happiness show on her face for she truly had been worried that GLaDOS had k.illed him and now that she knew she hadn't she was very relieved. Of course Chell did not want GLaDOS to notice and end up giving Wheatley away so she kept her pokerface as best as she could. Luckily Chell had a very good pokerface.
Chell thinks back "Sounds like you're BOTH ok. That's a lot of worry off my chest. Now I actually WILL be able to focus. By the way she's been insulting me this whole time. It's getting ridiculous. She even fell to the level of calling me fat. Like, WTF right? Are we grown adult enemys or are we preschoolers? I'm so annoyed right now guys. You don't even know. You don't even know how flipping annoyed I am with EVERYTHING. On that happy note I hope to see you both in person soon before I start pulling my hair out. ....Not literally of course. I'm not giving the insult generator the satisfaction of watching me do that."
A little later Wheatley tries another place under a moving platform that doesn't work. A little later after that GLaDOS had claimed to have taken her attention off Chell to fix something. Chell didn't believe it for a second. And just like she thought, it had all been a set up for another fat insult. She stepped on an aerial faith plate and although it did fling her up it didn't fling her high enough (though she did get a glimpse of Wheatley trying to say something to her) and it started beeping. GLaDOS "came back" and said "Well I'm back. The aerial faith plate in here is sending a distress signal. You broke it, didn't you? There. Try it now." Chell rolled her eyes knowing this was a set up for something but she did as was told to the same result. GLaDOS told her "Hmm. This plate must not be calibrated to someone of your generous...ness. I'll add a few zeros to the maximum weight."
Chell thought "If it was really broken you couldn't fix it like that."
"You look great by the way. Very healthy." GLaDOS added but Chell knew it was only added to further the insult so she thought a "Shut up." in response. GLaDOS told her to try it again and she did. Causing the same thing to happen. Chell thought "Ok I take back the comment about the zeros. You thought this one through. But this is still definitely on purpose. You wouldn't have even tried the zero thing if it wasn't-"
GLaDOS said "You seem to have defeated its load bearing capacity. Well done. I'll just lower the ceiling."
"Seriously?" Thought Chell. "Well Wheatley watch your head."
Wheatley quickly got out of the way of the machinery moving the ceiling down.
Chell thought to Harper "Are you guys hearing all of this? Did you see the extent she went to call me fat? This is what I've been dealing with. It's like she has nothing better to do. ....Actually. I don't even know if she does. She might not which means I'm even more in trouble. She has already threatened to do this to me forever. Like, literally forever. I'm pretty sure we'd both get bored of that after a while but then again it's GLaDOS so who knows. .....I never even got to have breakfast before dealing with this $#@%!"
((Ya I totally just wanted to show Chell's reaction to that))
Extra scene I just really wanted to do; There went another camera. GLaDOS was really starting to get tired of Chell's camera destroying obsession. What was that like, the 20th one already? She had already tried just not saying anything for it wasn't just Chell's opinion that a good poker face was a good way to avoid conflict but evidently it hadn't been enough. So now she gave Chell a recorded slow clap and told her "Congratulations you have succeeded in being the worst camera breaker I have ever encountered. Good job. I'm impressed. I hope you realize that this doesn't actually prevent me from watching you though. I always have a few hidden ones and the ones on non-portal conductive surfaces are immune to your antics." Chell destroyed another one. GLaDOS told her "You know. People DO go to jail for destroying other people's things. Keep this up and even if you do escape Aperture you might just end up locked up again for property damage." This of course didn't stop Chell ether so GLaDOS gave up and just put as many cameras as she could on the non-portal conductive surfaces.
The actual start to the scene; After a few more failed tries Wheatley had a new idea. He managed to weasel himself onto the nanobot work crew despite the fact that he was obviously not a nanobot. This gained him some clearance to do things that he otherwise would not be able to including shutting off the power in one of the test chambers so that while GLaDOS was busy with fixing that he could open up part of the chamber to get Chell out. (It was much easier to get around GLaDOS' security if she was distracted you see) But he would only have one chance at this so Wheatley knew he HAD to get it right.
GLaDOS had just finished telling Chell that she had another surprise for her. Not a fake one like the last thing she pulled but a real one with tragic consequences.
"Joy." thought Chell sarcastically. Suddenly the chamber went dark. GLaDOS asked "What's going on? Who turned off the lights?" A few wall pannles opened revealing Wheatley who spoke in a ridiculous southern accent "Hey buddy! I am speaking in an accent that is beyond her range of hearing."
GLaDOS corrected "Look. Metal ball. I CAN hear you." Wheatley immediately dropped the accent and said "Run! I don't need to do the voice. Run!" as he opened up more wall pannles and activated a light bridge for Chell to run to a walkway outside the chamber. GLaDOS quickly shut that light bridge off but Chell was already loose. Wheatley shut the chamber behind them and followed along his management rail while Chell upped her pace to the full sprint this situation deserved.
"AY!" Wheatley called to the girl "We're not safe yet! Run! Everyone run!"
"That was awesome." Thought Chell. Wheatley meanwhile did not share that opinion "Yes and she's probably even MORE mad at us now." Is what he said to it. Chell smirked and thought "The worst that can happen is she k.ills us and she already wants to do that. Why not go down as annoying as possible?" Wheatley started talking as they raced along "Quick word about the future plans I've got in store. We are going to shut down her turret production line alright, turn off her nerotoxin and then confront her. Again though. For the moment. RUN!"
"That's actually a very good plan." Thought Chell.
Suddenly GLaDOS spoke. "The irony is that you were almost at the last test." One of the chambers opened complete with a light bridge to come over and a heart icon made of pannles. GLaDOS continued "Here it is. Why don't you just do it? Trust me. It's an easier way out than whatever asinine your friend came up with."
"Trust YOU? Are you kidding?" Thought Chell.
In unknowing agreement with Chell Wheatley commented "Oh what? How stuped does she think we are." Chell did make use of the bride though. Just to go the opposite direction from what GLaDOS wanted. Not surprisingly GLaDOS quickly shut it off but Chell made it to a walkway anyway. They headed along that walkway until Chell had to go under one of the test chambers. GLaDOS pulled her version of when people cup their hands to catch a bug and moved some of the pannles from the above chamber to try and wall Chell in. It wasn't perfect as there were gaps but it worked well enough that Chell had to stop running for a moment to figure out how to escape. GLaDOS then placed turrets in the trap that Chell would have to deal with. Wheatley called "AH! What's going on in there!"
((I neglected to say whether or not Harper ended up in there too as I figured I better leave that to you))
"Already happened once." GLaDOS replied.
There were noises of turrets firing as well as turrets hitting the floor. Wheatley called "We have to get you out of there! I heard gunfire! A bit late for this but look out for gunfire! Probably doesn't help at this point but I have at least tried."
As the gunfire slowed a orange ball of light shot out of of the trap and hit a wall opening a portal when Chell hit the one portalable wall in the trap with the blue portal. Chell jumped out of said orange portal and onto a walkway freeing herself from the trap. She jumped and waved to the others to say "I'm over here!"
"Good." Chell thought with a grin. Wheatley came over and said "You're ok! Great! Come on!" then continued leading them along the pathways at full sprint. Another test chamber opened revealing a turret pointed at them. Chell took it out with the portal gun without even slowing down. Wheatley told them they were almost out of the dangerous area and GLaDOS responded by trying to squash them with the chambers themselves.
Wheatley called "She's bringing the whole place down! Hurry! HURRY! This way!"
Chell's thoughts became a string of cusses as metal creaked and bent and walkways collapsed around them. They just barely made it into a lift and Chell turned to watch the last of the destruction unfold. "Oh man! That's a new way to k.ill someone with the test chambers." Chell thought still out of breath "Did....did GLaDOS just flip out? Did we just witness GLaDOS flipping out? Cuz she probably just ruined a BUNCH of test chambers trying to get at us."
((I think I should let you know I hate romance so I'm going to leave it ambiguous so we can both have our own opinions. P.S. I might be willing to show them hugging in the future but I am NOT doing kissing or anything further. I draw the line there.))
Chell's eyes widened and she blushed a little but whether this was because the other girl was right or if it was just embarrassment at the idea was difficult for Wheatley to decode. He stared at Chell. She stared at him. Then both of them looked away from each other like they were both equally embarrassed. Wheatley said "I'm um....I'll meet you two on the other side." and darted off. He looked like he would be blushing too if he could. As she and Harper entered a hallway and walked through several doors Chell thought "Why would you tell him that?"
((She's ashamed? What did she expect to happen?))
When Chell reached Wheatley he told her "Brilliant. You made it through!" Then he looked around and asked "Hang on. Where's the other one?" Chell looked around too then shrugged. She was worried but she couldn't exactly say so, so shrugging was her only answer.
Wheatley tells Chell "Well...we know she didn't get crushed so hopefully she is ok. Maybe she has something she needs to do? Anyway follow me. We still have work to do. At least you know who can't touch us back here." Suddenly the lights went out.
"But she can still do that apparently." Thought Chell knowing it had to be GLaDOS who cut the lights.
Wheatley said "What's happening?! Oh...um...ok. ......Okay! Don't move!" Given that it was so dark Chell couldn't see her own nose she had no problem obeying. The core thought for a while then said "Okay. Alright. I have an idea. But it's bloody dangerous. Here... we... g- AAAH!" Wheatley's eye was suddenly lit up like a flashlight. In fact one might even say he looked more like a sentient spotlight than anything now. Wheatley looked around then rolled his eye and said "Oh for- They told me if I ever turned this flashlight on, I would D.IE! They told me that about everything! I don't even know why they bothered giving me this stuff if they didn't want me to use it. It's pointless. Mad." then he continued to lead Chell on her way. Literally a beacon in the dark.
Meanwhile... GLaDOS turns to find that girl from earlier in her room "What? How did you get in here?" She asks curious enough about this that she didn't automatically try to do anything.
"What do you think?" Asked GLaDOS as she shut and locked the door.
Meanwhile Chell was walking through an area that looked very factoryish. She had to avoid getting injured by the machines making parts for something as she had to walk across one of the conveyor belts. Wheatley told her "Here's an interesting story. I almost got a job down here in manufacturing. But uh....guess who the foreman went with. Only an exact duplicate of himself. Nepotism. Ended up giving me the WORST possible job, tending to all the smelly humans." Chell stopped and looked at him with an obvious "HEY!" expression. Seeming to realize his mistake Wheatley said "Th- The um....sorry. That was.....I wouldn't say smelly. Ju-Just attending to the humans. Sorry 'bout that. That just-That just slipped out. A bit insensitive. .....em....smelly humans." He mumbled the last part and looked like if he could blush he would have again. In fact he looked even more embarrassed than Harper's joke had made him. Chell gave him a friendly smile and thought "It's ok Wheatley. To be honest test subjects don't really get to take baths very often so we probably are a little smelly." A little after that Wheatley started talking about how he actually really loved humans and the way they looked as an obvious attempt to smooth things over. Chell thought "Wheatley. No. Just drop it. I've already forgiven you and now you're just being awkward."
"Good idea." GLaDOS replied then she called over the various speakers in Aperture "Are you missing someone? Because I think I have something more tempting than cake to draw you out this time."
"Harper!" Thought Chell. Thinking along the same lines Wheatley said "What? How'd that happen? When did you lose her exactly? Ah no! Now we have to plan another rescue mission don't we?"
GLaDOS told her "If it helps you probably won't have to be afraid very long. ...Because you probably aren't going to live very long. On another note I have two questions for you. 1. Why did you come in here if you're just going to act like a frightened animal. 2. Do you like science?"
