A Plea to JS and a Petition to fix their broken game, SoD
Hello, everyone. I have tried before to make a movement for JS to fix SoD before -- bugfixes before updates. However, it did not do very much, it seems.
If you have clicked this topic, please, please, sign it as well by replying with your in-game viking name and forum name. Preferably, a message will also work nicely, but it is not required.
I do not believe the devs are the problem. In fact, I have an itch that suggests that JS isn't investing enough resources into the game. Therefore, in signing this petition, you are requesting that JS invest more into SoD and make the devs actively work to fix bugs and prevent hackers, and also, perhaps updates too.
If you decide to sign--thank you.
To start us off, I will sign.

Dear SoD,
I remember first stepping on the docks of Berk in 2013, excited as ever to play a multiplayer game of my most favorite movie franchise ever at the time. While my first account is long forgotten, I have not forgotten my second.
I loved fishing, questing, flying on and caring for my dragons, racing, and talking with others (when I wasn't muted by the game).
Even when scary rumours of hacking went around, I still played. I even bought gems and a membership. Even when the game had time-out and connection issues, or when hackers unfairly exposed and exploited boneknappers onto their accounts, I still played without complaint. I still had fun. The game was still actively updated.
Yet now, I see updates once in a blue moon. I hear little from developers. And as far as I know, the game is as buggy as ever and hackers still run rampant.
I want to give SoD a second chance, but why, why should I when I know I will be disappointed? It is a dying game. If you guys just tried, maybe, a little harder; to put more resources into the game, hire new people, it could be amazing. So why don't you? Please, invest into SoD and encourage your developers to really try, and perhaps get more developers if there's not enough. I want this game to thrive, and to see it in the state it's in is just sad.
I’am a SoD player who keeps a low activity, but would be glad to see changes and fixes for the more active and new players.

I don't think a petition would work-- every player wants a working game without a huge load of bugs. JumpStart knows this. I don't think it's about the number of employees, either. And don't forget, the devs are not the guys who have a say in what gets done or doesn't get done. In order to fix the game, it probably has to be built again from scratch, and that won't happen.
I wish you good luck, though! Who knows, it might do something.
Actually, I'd gladly "buy the rights to a buggy game". :D Although I know I'd make a mess of it, I'd love to own, or at least work on, SoD. (Hence why I sent the admins a PM a while back offering any help I could give. They haven't gotten back to me, however, as I predicted. Oh well.) I know it's never gonna happen, but yeah, I'd gladly do what I could. :)
Don't forget that SoD is another franchise game-- they're handled in a different way from original games. Lots of restrictions and stuff like that. Plus, projects like this can be dropped within an instant if a company like DW feels like it. It makes sense not to go the extra mile for it. I remember Disney doing the same thing to a video game company my partner worked at. I wouldn't put it past DW either.
There's no reviving SoD, as it hasn't died. It has plenty players and I'm sure that it still makes a good profit, despite all the bugs.
Speaking of Neopets, I completely stopped playing that game when JS took over. They actually, legitimately ruined the entire website in one fell swoop, even harder than Viacom ever did, and all we can do is wait for it to actually, truly shut down. It barely has players, webpages take over 4 seconds a pop to load and every page contains a captcha. Support does not exist, the new plots are terrible and it's clearly a 100% monetization scheme, too. and this is coming from someone who started playing in 2000. Seeing it hidewas super sad because I was there since its earlier days, and I enjoyed it so much when it was good.
On the flip side: Neofriends is out of bèta... hhheh. /golfclap
JS can't just give SoD away. There's a lot of licencing stuff to go through, and no company in their right mind would take it over without simply taking the assets and rebuilding the game from scratch. I think it's kind of the only way to fix the many bugs the game has. It has to be filled to the brim with spaghetti code by now.
Aw, I miss pre-JS Neopets as well... mainly just how active it was. I haven't spent much time on there in the past few years, but even before then I had reduced my gameplay to Altador Cup or other seasonal events/trophies. Of course, now that you've brought it up, I'll probably tinkering around in there for a while today. lol

My dream would be if they stopped working on this game and started a new, better project.
Imagine. School of Dragons, but it’s made in Unreal Engine. The animations are accurate to the source material, they add PHYSICS to the animations, give the dragons individual animations, sounds, abilities and.. listen.. wing flapping and running sound effects. Wow!
Our vikings aren’t stiff and actually look alive and the game isn’t a bugfest.
New Berk actually looks like the New Berk in the movie. What a dream
Just curious, why Unreal rather than Unity? They're both pretty much capable of the same things. They're just different engines that are handled differently, Unreal having a higher learning curve.
If they add physics and all that jazz (which is 100% possible in Unity), only people with pcs capable of running games properly would be able to play. That'd cut off.... Nearly all mobile players, and anyone who has a normie computer.
I just joined in April, and have fallen in love with this game, bugs, crashes and all, and I'm not much into online or app games, lol! I paid for a membership, I buy gems as I get that money supports the company and developers. Reading the comments from long-timers here, it is sad to hear that I have joined at a time when this seems to be on the downhill slide. I too, would be willing to offer resource help if I thought it would do any good.
So- JS if you read this - what - exactly - is the problem? Bored and have moved on to other projects? Not enough resources in manpower or money? This seems like a good and tight knit community. I am probably one of the oldest to play this game and can afford to support the game through membership and gem purchases, but surely others would be willing to help if asked? Where is DreamWorks in all of this? Surely if the right people at DW knew how successful this game is, despite the bugs, they might be willing to offer support or resources?
I would really hate to see this game go away, it offers a lot of thoughtful ideas, such as science, problem solving and other things to do with everyday life - managing a farm for example. Please don't let a good thing die.
Maybe we should all petition DreamWorks to get them involved. This is their franchise and surely they would want to extend the influence of the franchise through this game? I don't know the history of the development of the game, so this is just thoughts on my part.

Don't fret too much... you didn't join at a time that is any different from how it's always been, save for a few minor additional annoyances. The game has *always* had issues with bugs, glitches, loading times and lag. None of this is new. Newer players vent about it on the forum, so sometimes it can seem like these are new problems... but there have been hundreds of identical threads made over the past 6 years. lol
Regardless of how difficult players think it is to earn gems or dragons, it is still a game that can be played to completion for FREE. This greatly reduces the resources available for fixing code or adding new content and servers. This isn't World of Warcraft... plus, it's targeted towards children (regardless of who actually plays). Free-to-play children games don't usually get the same type of quality control because kids aren't longterm players (they grow up, move on, etc). Additionally, JumpStart has several other games (mostly free) that they run/support and most of them require a cycle of new content on a fairly consistent basis. Lastly, JumpStart is an educational media business, not an entertainment-focused one.
I'm an adult that has been playing on/off for almost 6 years and I still think, even with its issues, it's still one of the best free MMO games in its class. The details of artistic design alone rivals many paid MMO adult games out there. It's also extremely unique... there's no other game out there like it. Plus, being an MMO gamer outside of SoD, I can truly appreciate the simpleness of its UI. I'm not one of those people that demands every MMO game should have 10,000 tweakable options that 90% of the players have no idea how to use and just end up breaking their own game. lol
All that being said, I can see the frustration regarding the low frequency of new content... however, this game has undergone major updates since its inception. It has made great leaps of expanding itself in map/worlds, gameplay and content. It's a far cry from where it started, thank Odin for that. lol
You also have to remember that because it's a licensed game based on a major franchise, the content will always have a limit because it's restricted by the content of the HTTYD franchise and it's required to stick to a certain aspect of continuity. If it doesn't already exist in the HTTYD franchise, you're not likely ever going to see it in SoD. So, they have to stick to a timeline for content to be released in SoD in order to encourage players to keep returning.
Oh, dear, it's so sad to learn that I've joined SoD at a bad time. I could have started months earlier, and I would be better off in the game, but oh dear, this is the low age of SoD? I can only imagine what it would have been like to join even a year earlier. I'm so jealous of you older players! DOWN WITH HACKERS!! Oh goodness, I can't even stay on the point.
I also agree, SoD is probably the only game for dragons/HTTYD fans that is actually fun and addictive (I tried Riders of Icarus but is just not as fun), you have quests, different dragons to adopt, you can join/create a clan and a lot more, I don't really mind the graphics of the game, it could be better but I don't think this is the major issue, honestly, there are only 2 things I would point out to make the game better and are kinda easy to fix:
First one: Make more offers like this
One of the major complaints about the game is that you need gems to do everything and is difficult to earn them without spending real money, making more offers like these with dragon eggs, clothes and other items would make the players feel like the game is less "pay-to-win" and could actually make players more active because you have weekly and daily rewards that give you gems.
Second one: More items to costumize vikings/dragons
Something that always bugged me is that there is only 5-6? hair options to buy from the store (if you're playing as a female), I would reaaaally want to see more items like hair, boots (they all kinda look the same), pants and shirts. I also noticed that the Skrill outfit set is limited edition??? But wasn't it a regular item in the store a few years ago? I love dragon themed outfit sets and I like the idea of having limited items but having them for a limited time always is kinda tiring, unless it's Dreadfall or Snoggletog items, some outfits/items should be regular.
Also, more costumization for dragons, I know the game follows the same costumizations the dragons have in the movie/series and they can't just create things they want, it needs to follow the movie-canon content, but more things for dragons would be nice, maybe some armors?
I really love this game too and agree that some things should change, but just like many children targeted games, take Club Penguin as a example, maybe the devs know that this game is not in it's peek age anymore and are moving on to next projects or just don't think it's worth it to spend money on this game, as you said, it's a dying game, I don't want to see this game hidebut i have already accepted it as a natural process that all games struggle with, I think the game still has a chance because of the movie and the series, and I really hope the dev will listen to us about little things that could be changed/fixed.

Hey! I do know that the devs probably have little say in this issue, and I didn't intend to make it appear like I am targeting them. Hence why this is a plea to JS, not the devs or admins.
I know they still probably won't listen. But I'm really hoping there's still a chance for this game and this company. I think maybe, if we show how much we care about it, they might believe there's some kind of chance they have with SoD and they might try to revive it. Or, if anything, sell the game to some other company that will do better with it. Jumpstart has Neopets at the moment and it seems like they're focusing a bit more on that, which, I have to be honest they have better luck with considering 1) it is not a buggy mess 2) a lot of older people still play it and pay for things due to nostalgia and such, also youtubers like Tamago are bringing it into light again.
Maybe it would just be better off if they gave SoD to someone else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Yet at the same time, who would want to buy the rights to a buggy game? I'm not sure. I just hope they'll figure something out. Thanks for the luck, though!
