Okay, didn't know where to put this, but i'm gonna put it here anyway :P

Hi.  So, the story is, I have no pets.  My sister has a Golden Retriever she got for Christmas, named Izzo, but thats all we've got ((Somehow we've managed to get rid of the over 13 pets we've had over the past 10 years :P  Its annoying)).  Well, I've been pretty lonely as of late, ever sense my family moved churches ((Well, I was still lonely there but I had a couple friends.  Now since I don't go to a public school, I have no place to go & hang out with people, since church was kind of my social hangout)), & even more lonely after I had to get rid of my cat, Millie, & my dog Samson, whos been my bud hidefor more then 12 years passed away :(

I told my parents about it, & finally came to the conclusion, that I need a pet ((Mostly because I need a comfort buddy, sort of a friend who doesn't say anything)).  My mom & dad have talked it over, & its not a no ((Yet)), but they are definetly interested, & will get into it more once they're not as busy with work.  Since we talked, we've narrowed down the list of things I could get as a pet.  I can't get a bird, cause their too noisy, I can't get a cat, unless we train it to stay outside ((-cries-)), we can't get any type of rodent because at least one person in my family hates each kind, no Bunny, cause my brother's allergic, no reptiles because their not exactly "huggable cuddle buddies" & are super lazy, same thing with fish, & absolutely no bugs or spiders >.<  So that left one more option; a dog.

So here's the reason why I'm posting this.  I've been researching all sorts of dog breeds & have been trying to find the right one.  Well, its a hard job ((Especially when your family is really picky & google doesn't show all the avalible breeds at once)), so, I thought I'd ask you guys.  Do you know of any breeds that would be great for me?  Well, heres the list of my family's wants & needs:
-Has to be between -12-18 in.
-Has to be a loving, affectionate dog that gets along great with other dogs & kids
-Can't be over 1,000 dollars
-Can't be too active, cause my family's too lazy to do much with it :P
-Nothing even close to a bulldog, dovermen pincher, or a rotweiler.  My mom was bitten by one of these dogs when she was little & had to get rabies shots for it O.O  So, nothing remotely close to any of these breeds, my mother will never hear of it

Well, those are my families needs.  I've done a little research myself, & have come up with a couple breeds :
Minature Australian Shepherd/Mini Aussie/Toy Australian Shepherd ((So many names! XD))
Baby:
Adult:
The mini Aussie would probobly be the  best option.  They are small, affecionate, get along great with other kids/dogs, & are pretty low for price, depending on the dog ((usual price is about 800)).  My only two problems with this dog is that it requires exersize every day, & that their not my favorite.  I love how cute they are as puppies, but puppies grow into dogs & I'm not a huge fan of the big version XP

English Cocker Spaniel
Baby:
((Aww! X3))
Adult:
I've just got to say it, these things are ADORABLE X3  Their my favorite out of all the breeds i've looked at ((Even though my dad thinks their ugly)).  Their overly affecionate, caring, good with kids/other dogs, &, best of all, lazy! XD  There's only one problem with these; their SSOOOO expensive.  Their almost always over 1,000 dollars X(  So, thats the only problem with this breed, is that their very expensive ((Otheriwse their perfect X3))

Finnish Lapphund
Baby:
Adult:
I especially like these.  Just look at them!  Walking puffballs! XD  Their pretty good with kids/other dogs, kind, affecionate, & cheap.  But this would be one of the less favorites for my parents because their loud, & require lots of exersize :P  So, I don't think this would be the best fit ((Which is too bad, cause I love these things! X3))
Okay, so those are some of the dogs I've looked at ((I've looked at more, I'm just too lazy to list all of them)).  Now, do any of you have any suggestions for a good dog to get that would fit these standards?  If you do, post them below!  It would be a great help, especially sense I've had to do all this research on my own X3  Thank you so so much!

Who told you reptiles don't like hugs

Who told you that

Indom loves hugs

Its because reptiles like warmpth and so what happens is that they sense your body heat and will snuggle up to you and its the cutest thing in the world

And reptiles aren't as expensive as a dog

and you get to have more pets because they come with cute little buggies(I recommend Dubi Roaches{Beatles} because they don't stink, don't make a noise, and are pretty cute) and its just the coolist thing seeing a reptile eat them

But hey, get a dog

You're just missing out on some fun time snuggles with your dog/cat lizard

I couldn't get a lizard :(

No one told me lizards wern't cuddly.  I just assumed that from my experiences with reptiles & from my friends who own reptiles.  I just meant that they wern't really the kind to waddle up to you & think "aww, my owner had a bad day, I'm gonna make her feel better!"  & go up & snuggle with them.  If your lizard has ever done that for you, good for you, cause most reptiles run the other way when they see mr coming.  I think they hate me after that spell I had when I was little with catching them & then their legs fallin' off & stuff......Yah, they kind of hate me :P

Besides, they not fluffy ^_^  ((There are actually plenty of reasons why I cant'; my mom wouldn't let me, My dad is scared of certian reptiles, I dislike most bugs a lot, little children issue, i would lose it like all my friends lost theirs, blah blah blah.  Glad you have your perfect pet, but a reptile would not be a good fit for me or my family, even if I wanted one.))

Dog help was summoned

I have been studying and have had dogs my entire life. I am planning to be in the field of shelters or rescuing dogs. I have my fair share of knowledge. Now, that I got my introduction...

Dogs are not just snuggle toys, they require a lot of attention, time, and money. Keep in mind, before you get a dog, that they are hard to take care of, train, feed, and whatever else. You will have to teach it to be potty trained, you will have to teach it basic tricks, such as sit and stay for hisher own safety. You need to devote a lot of time, especially if it is a puppy.

I highly suggest not buying from a petstore or breeder. Buy from a shelter if possible. Petstores take puppies from puppy mills (look them up, theyre absolutely terrible) and breeders likely have the same treatment and they are prone to lying about a breed. For example, my dog Amos, was supposed to be pure Great Pyrenees, but he turned out to be more german shepherd than Pyrenees. Rescues are also an amazing choice, you're doing a great cause.

Now, remember, puppies are hard to care for. If they are left home alone, please dont put them outside unless youre absolutely sure it is properly fenced off or a really good leash. Leaving a dog alone endangers it greatly if they get out of their fenced area. They could get lost, killed, ran over, or endanger other people. If you leave it inside while you leave, leave the radio or TV on. As well as leave out a lot of toys for it to play with...that is, unless you want to see what the inside of your shoes look like. A few more tips on dogs can be found online, to furthermore protect himher, other humans, or your things.

Now for the part you're waiting for: Breeds. The best kinds of breeds you can get a pitbull. Dont immediately assume this dog is bad news. Pitbulls are affectionate, kind, and cuddly dogs that love kids and sometimes other animals. Mini aussies are a good choice, although they are hyper. Beagles are affectionate, and small, but also hyper. And bloodhounds are sweet, cuddly, and calm, but they are smelly, so prepare for that. Remember that dogs are different, even if from the same breed. Some beagles may love children, others dont. It depends how they were raised and how they were adapted to it. Small dogs are normally hyper, bigger dogs are the more calm breeds. And remember, all puppies are hyper and sometimes dont like being cuddled because they cant sit still! So, dont get rid of your puppy, please, remember they do love you with all their heart.

Good luck, I hope this helped at least a little! If you have any questions, reply to this or PM me, I hope you find your new best friend with four legs and a tail! :)

Thanks! :D

Thank you for even commenting!  I was afraid this would be one of those topics that everyone would ignore....

Omgoodness while reading this it sounded like my mom writing XD  Yes, I've already had these topics come up multiple times with both my parents.  I'm already aware of almost all of these points ((Thats why I'm saving up at least 300, maybe 400 dollars of i can so I can pay my fair share of the damage, er, I mean, expenses :P)).  And actually, my mom knows a dog trainer friend, & we might get a discount because my mom's been a big help to her business ((Lol, my mom knows everyone XD)).  As I've said, we've had more then 13 pets over the years, two of which were dogs, & i've taken care of multiple dogs over the years, so I think I can handle it ;)  I know from experience that dogs get anxious & upset when left alone, cause our dog Izzo gets like this, so I might just try that music trick!  Might help him be calmer when we leave for vacation this year ^_^

And actually, my dad thinks its okay to get a puppy from a breeder, as long as we're sure their okay.  My dad bought Izzo from a breeder & we haven't had any health issues or anything with him ((&, two other pluses, he was cheap & he's absolutely gorgeous!  I bet he could be a show dog if we wanted him to be)).  Though my dad does agree about pet stores, & he actually doesn't want to get a puppy from a shelter ((I think he thinks they'll have health problems or something)).  So, I don't know.  There's a nice shelter/puppy store somewhat close to where we live, so my parents might just go check it out.

Wait, pitbull?  Oh dear, that wouldn't work at all.  My mom hates dogs like that, there would be no room for bargin even if I wanted one ((Thats why I said nothing close to a bulldog/rotweiler/doverman pincher, I'm pretty sure she's still a little scared of them)).

Oh, & thanks for the imput on the Aussie!  I acutally know for a fact that mini Aussies are less energetic then the full grown australian shepherd, because their smaller ((Which means their might be some room for bargining :D)).  I just saw one at our local farmers market & the little gal was so cute X3  She was fluffy too, & was pretty well behaved while my siblings nearly suffocated her while trying to get in & pet her.  I just hope that if I do happen to get one, that I can keep it under control & that its small enough!

So, in your opinion, are there any other breeds that would work well with what my family wants, besides the one's you've listed?  It doesn't matter if its pure bred, or a mix ^_^

Like someone said a few down, the breed goes only a little ways. As I said previously, there are diverse personalities in different dogs. And I also recommend just taking a trip down to a shelter to see if you like any of them. Take a look at all the dogs, not for how they look, but for how they act. Even the as people can call 'ugliest' dog can be the sweetest. Take the Hunchback of Notre Dame as an example. But, if you want specific breeds, as the person said, you should not get a purebred dog.

If you didnt know, purebred dogs have been bred with e same breed, and there are only so many pure. It goes the same with the pure Kingdom, where they only bred with royal blood. More and more went wrong until a completely messed up person was made. More diseases, and such, are born. So, try getting a breed with a mix. I dont have any other specifics in mind, but take a look at a dog shelter. You might be ale to find a pitbull mixed with something, that doesnt look anything like a pitbull.

Again, try it, good luck!

Breeds Shouldn't Matter But Advice on Dog-Picking

If you're looking simply for a companion and not a dog for any specific purpose, then breeds do not and should not matter and have a very small effect on overall personality. They are a good basis for knowing things for prey drive, size, and energy level but not necessarily much else. In fact, it strikes me as a tragedy to look for an expensive purebred when so many dogs out there need a home and will be overlooked simply because they don't have fancy papers. It's that kind of attitude from owners that made me turn away from the dog training business after being in it for only a few years. Every dog I've ever had was an individual, regardless of what a breed book said their personality would be, and it is far more important that you meet your dog in person before you get it than it is for you to pick "the right breed." And while some were pure and others were mixes, every dog I've had was a rescue in some form or another...and they've all been the best of friends (and most of them have been extremely healthy...please let your dad know that. Shelters put down unhealthy animals, in fact, in order to make room for the very healthy ones. The only exception in our healthy dogs was one we got off a friend, who had heartworm and would have been put down put down if we brought him to a shelter, so we kept him.. So I can't recommend a breed for you, as I feel it's practically irresponsible for me to do so. I just recommend you meet different dogs from different people, maybe even of different breeds, and mull over each a little before you come home with one.

Like Shiro, I would have suggested going to a shelter or rescue and spending time with different dogs there until you find one you click with. Now you should make note of the breeds that are theorized to be included in the mixes you see if you're worried about things like size and high energy levels...for example, don't get any border collie mixes if you don't like exercise, and don't get a Newfoundland mix if you don't want something huge. The best way to do this is to make a list of breeds you won't get don't look at dogs that are or are crossed with that breed. Leave every other breed option and mix open and simply base the final decision on a dog-by-dog basis. But if your dad won't go for that for misguided reasons, I understand; it's hard to get through to our parents, even when they're being illogical, and it's not like any of us can talk to him for you. But I must stress this: overall, I wouldn't worry too much about health issues in purebreds so long as you check your breeders, but in terms of pure probability (and in contrast to your father's thoughts), you run a greater health risk with a purebred with a clean health record than a mixed breed with a clean health record. That's not always the case, but it's more likely than not, especially since shelters usually cull unhealthy dogs immediately while purebreds not only don't always cull them but sometimes purposefully breed to keep a health problem in order to keep a certain trait.

I'm also sorry to hear about your mother's breed prejudice; it's really unfair to those dogs that she won't consider perfectly nice dogs just because of their of their breed. (Oddly enough, the most perfect family dog I've ever owned out of the 11 dogs we've had over the years looked pure pitbull, a sweetheart we named Jethro.) But again, I understand. You're the kid; don't argue with the mom. ;)

If you can't convince your father to take the responsible route of adopting a rescue, at the very least try to avoid high-level show breeders. I generally find breeders who breed dogs for their traditional purpose, such as hunting or herding, have the safest breeding practices, whereas high-level show breeders often focus on looks before health and tend to have practices such as linebreeding (purposeful inbreeding). And for cocker spaniels specifically, beware any family history of hypothyroidism in your dog's lineage in recent generations. (The onset of this disease often happens later in life and so can continued to be past down accidentally even by responsible breeders.)

Thanks! :D

Aww, I'm sorry to hear you think I'm doing that :(  That makes me sad.  I do want a dog for companionship, but I can't just go out & pick out the dog that I mesh best with, mostly because my parents are very particular about certian things, & I'm afraid of absolutely falling in love with the animal I can't have ((I've had too many experiences with this :(  Nealry every single pet I've had either passed away within 6 months or was given away cause they wern't right for the family.  The pet I meshed best with was my dog Samson.  He was a pale yellow Lab & even though he had lots of problems, was my only friend for a a lot of the years in my life.  Now that he's gone I'm hoping to find another dog who can be that for me, which has been really ha.rd sense my parents are so particular about what I can & can't get.))

The only reasons I'm super particular is because of what my family wants.  It has to be the right size, the right price, friendly, not super active, blah blah blah.  If I was old enough & had enough money I would go out & buy the dog I wanted most, but since I'm not the one who pays for dog food or cleans up all the fur shed or the one who owned the porch that was chewed to shreads ((Yep, that was Izzo's fault.  He was teething :P)) I can't really decide if I want a big dog or one thats active just because its the best one for me ((even though I do agree, you shouldn't say no to a dog that fits you just because its coat isn't the right color, or that its too big.)).  Wait, did I say my dad was worried if a dog was purebred?  Of course not!  He doesn't care, as long as its healthy, well behaved, & pleases my mom! ^_^

He also might care about size but I know he doesn't care if its a pure or a mix.  I've been looking at a lot of mixes & they seem like some of the best options!  He actually showed me a mix breed first & said he liked them ((It was a Husky/Chow Chow mix XD  He might sound bad to you, but he's actually much more flexible then my mom)).  In fact, I'd love to get a mix, but I haven't seen a lot, & I can't find a list of existing mixes! >.<  So I only know of a few, like a few Husky mixes.  I told my sister about these mixes, & now she wants a Pomsky cause she can't have a Husky lol XD  She got Izzo, our Auburn Retrevier instead.

We've gotten almost all our pets locally ((Except our hermit crabs.  Note; don't ever get a hermit crab.  We've had at least 6, they're not good pets!)), including Izzo, whom we got from a local farmer friend for about 450 bucks.  If we get another dog, we'd probobly get it the same way as Izzo, from a friend or someone locally we trust.  Oh, thanks for telling me about that!  That seems like something dog show breeders would value.  Lol I wouldn't be able to afford a show quality dog anyway XD  If a regular English Cocker is over 1,000 one thats show breed material would cost a fortune!

Even though I do half agree with your statement, its a lot to search through all the different dogs to find the one thats perfect for you.  There are so many different dogs to chose from, & sometimes you can't get them even if you love them ((Bless the people who can, thats awesome & I envy you!)).  RIght now, I can't go visit any shelters because my parents are too busy with work, so I'm just researching the temperments, sizes, & such of different breeds & seeing which dog would be best for my family from what I can gather.  My parent's might be open to a different breed of dog if it fits their standards, I'm just trying to get some kind of sense of where to start looking.  I do think it is good to aknowledge the fact that breed doesn't matter when picking the best pet, but that doesn't work for everyone.  I have to keep in mind practical things before I go all crazy & think "aww this one is amazing he's perfect!"

The breed is just a starting point for the time being.  I can't get to a shelter so I'm just looking at medium sized breeds that would fit my families needs best.  But, If I do happen to find a Husky that loves me & is super lazy, I'll be glad to tell ya your advice payed off! XD  ((And I'm really sorry to hear you think me or my family is acting like that.  My dad isn't as bad as I think you're thinking.  He isn't really a pet person, but he is open to most dogs as long as they fit the family.  I'm not really sure what he has against dog shelters, so I can't say if its just because of a bad experience or whatever you think. I just remember him saying something about them that he didn't like :P  Isn't that helpful?  I can't even remember what he said XP  Though I do know he said no to getting a puppy from a pet store, which makes sense now that some of you have explained why.))

Well, to wrap this all up, I wanna thank you for the words of wisdom.  I'll be sure to remember some of these tips if I my parents say its okay in the end.  Hopefully if the answer is yes I can find the right one!!! :D ((If I do, i'll be sure to post the little one here! ^_^  This forum needs more adorable puppy pictures <3))

Well...

If it makes your family happy, most shelters will have a summary of the pet right next to it, and if you want more specifics, ask the shelter. And then you can get the pet that clicks with you, with a summary of the personality of the dog and what he/she does and loves to do. If it is a shelter that doesnt have that, then just ask the workers. It also should include if it is good with other pets and/or children.

On top of that, they allow you to take him/her out to play with him/her and take the dog on a walk, most shelters at least, which is super helpful with bonding with the dog. (Try the Hiccup move. XD For them to smell your hand, that is. I doubt they'll put their nose in your hand.)

Sorry, I never meant to imply

Sorry, I never meant to imply that your dad was not a good pet person; your comments to me and Shiro stating he doesn't agree with pet stores tell me he's quite the opposite, in fact. (Very glad to hear that.) But you did also say he doesn't want you to get a dog from a shelter because it will be unhealthy, and not only is that simply incorrect factually but I find adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue to be the most charitable and responsible way to obtain a dog (unless you need the dog for a job, like hunting or herding or agility or being a guide dog...then you probably want to go with breeds. There is a place for purebreds, don't get me wrong; that's why they were bred in the first place. That said, I do know an assistance dog training center that only takes rescues and shelter dogs for their program...though they only take retriever mixes, so they kind of prove rescuing is good and breeds sometimes serve a purpose all at the same time. Anyway.) Glad to hear he doesn't have an issue with the bloodlines specifically, though.

And I don't think you are being incorrect in this at all. You're just going along with your parents, and at your age, that's just being a good and respectable kid. Please don't think I think lowly of your pet picks. It's your parents' unwillingness to get a shelter dog that I reacted to, and your mother's thoughts on certain ones. Nothing about you and nothing else about how they view and care for dogs. (I mean, they like dogs in general; clearly they're doing something right already.) XD It is a relief about the purebred thing, though; nice to know that's not weighing into the whole shelter thing.

If you don't actually remember exactly why your dad didn't want a shelter dog...maybe brouch the subject with him again? Like Shiro said, good shelters have backgrounds on the dogs when available and will let you do certain "trials" with the dog like going for a walk and/or playing with them in a pen. Maybe that kind of information could sway him? It's worth a shot. If he doesn't go for it, a dog that's from a friend of a friend usually does work out pretty well.

Regardless of whether you go to a shelter or not, I'm glad I could give some helpful advice on picking a dog, though I'm sorry I couldn't help you narrow down your search. Good luck finding a new best friend! ^_^

Thanks :)  My dad isn't the biggest pet person, but he got along well enough with Samson, & now with Izzo ((Though my dad's really tall & has a loud voice so Izzo is scared of him XD  Of course, my dad is really nice to him, he's just a little frightened of him)).  I will ask about the shelters thing again, if not to get some clarity, but I better wait.  I think I'm annoying both of them with all my talk of puppies XD  ((Then it will definetly be a no))

And I bet this sounds like something my younger brother would say, but I'm not technecally a kid.  I'm not allowed to tell strangers on the internet my age, but I can tell you that I am not some 12 year old kid.  I'm just abnormally obedient & respectful of my parents, more so then most teenagers/young adults my age XD  If my parents agree & I can get a puppy, I'll be sure to post the little guy here! X3  I might just get a picture of Izzo too, just because he's such a hansome doggy & I wanna show him off a bit XD

And yes more puppy pictures! :D  I shall deliver on that request:

IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIE!

You're a kid to me, kid. ;) I'm in my twenties; most of you on here are kids to me on. (Not by much, though, admittedly; still big sister age to you all.) And though you are not a "child," you're still living in your parents' house currently as their kid, so...parents rule supreme on these decisions. That's all I meant by that. I was my mother's kid until I was 18 and got to run off across the country to college. XD

Snootle

The Puppy

Appearance: A green dragon with a canine-shaped snout, wolf-like ears and two pairs of short, upward curling brown horns below the ear, lining the jaw. A row of tough scales line the top of his snout, which ends in a grey dog-like nose. On his neck and across the top of his chest is a thick fur mane that puffs up whenever he gets angry, frustrated, startled or defensive. His eyes are orange with a round pupil.

Red-orange scales line his belly and go halfway down the tail which is plain, part from the trailing of a row of spines at the top. Along his back is a row of bone-white spikes. His wings are fairly plain, with a large bony hook on the hand.

Personality

  • All-bark-no-bite type attitude
  • Acts like he’s ready and able to fight anyone at any moment but will fall over if you look at him angrily
  • Makes up a lot of stories that make him look tough
  • Kind of emotionally unstable
  • Older brother to Beetroot- sometimes is mean, but will go through h.ell and back for him
  • Easily distracted
  • Loves copper and anything copper coloured
  • High-class taste in music and fashion

Beetroot

The Duck

Appearance: A dull lavender ampitheare with red and yellow feathered wings, a deep blue tail tip and blank, white round eyes. A large, curled horn adorns his nose, and the mouth is jagged. His body is completely covered in feathers that are incredibly fluffy and soft- he’s like a duckling with no legs. The feathers do not flare out until the nape of his neck, and increase in density on the tail.

Personality

  • Looks and acts super cute and innocent
  • Is actually prepared to kill a man/dragon if given a reason to
  • Thankfully does not have the physical capacity to do so
  • Holds a grudge until death itself dies
  • Optimistic and playful
  • Makes many different kinds of noises, few of them explainable by science
  • Will eat anything, even if it is not meant to be eaten
  • Dislikes numbers- has been known to attempt to destroy anything with maths on it

Adopt Don't Shop/Animals are a LOT of Responsibility

The entire concept that you can find the "perfect breed" is a lie. There is no breed perfect for you. ALL dogs are individuals, and are not guarunteed to fit what is concidered the "standard" of their breed. If you want a dog you are sure to get along with, visit your local shelter, volunteer some time, and pick a dog that you know the actual personality and needs of.

However, it is a bad idea to get a dog if there is already one in the house. You need to be sure that they will interact well together, and that vet bills will not pile up. I highly recommend doing research on dog introductions and talking to your family about vet costs instead of researching dog breeds.

More than that though, dogs are very demanding pets. I've lived with my boy for 7 years, he is perfectly healthy, and today I still had to pay $400 in vet bills for ruitine work. If you want an attentive and "cuddly" pet, concider getting a pair of rats. They are very sociable, love snuggles, and need far fewer shots and checkups - although of course you should still find an exotic pet to get some! After the initial cost of a tiered cage and all the hides and toys to aquip it, they don't cost very much at all.

As I've said, this is the

As I've said, this is the beginning stage.  I only talked about this a little less then two weeks ago with my parents.  They haven't had the time to take me to shelters, talk about general supplies, food, vet costs, or even look at any dogs.  Right now their very busy with work & won't be able to talk very seriously about all that kind of stuff until further notice, which will probobly be later this month.  I'm just asking if anyone has had any experience with some dogs that would know a certian kind that would come close to these standards, even though affecion varies with the dog.  I'm aware of the costs, & all the work, cause i've owned more then one, plus I've taken care of a lot of dogs cause its my job, & so far a dog has been the easiest to keep, & to keep alive :P

((Yah, both our frogs & Hermit crabs passed away within 6 months.  Our cats actually lived but two of them ran away & the other two had to be given away.  After my experience with hermit crabs & seeing mine literally break in half & thinking I ki.lled it, I never want to get another one again O.O))  As I said above, I can't get any other kind of rodent, cat, or reptile because of certian things.  I couldn't get a rat because my mom hates rats, not to mention they creep me out, & I'm very terrible at matinence when it comes to cages or litterboxes.  I just wanna know if anyone can think of a general breed that is not very active, & is within the size range cause I'm having trouble trying to find one.  I'm starting to get a little frustrated cause I was hoping for some help but I'm not getting a lot of the help I asked for :/

Umm that is not ok

No offence but if what you say about the cats and hermit crabs is true you shouldn't  have a goldfish, much less a dog. All dogs are active enough to need daily training and walks, as well as constant research about how to improve their training and care. You clearly never did the research to care for your past pets, and this sounds like the dog is going to be your responsibility, not your parents'. The reason shelters don't allow people under the age of 19 to adopt animals is because they require far more care than can be trusted onto a child.

Furthermore, all cats should be kept indoors, for their safety and that of the ecosystem. If you can't handle them being inside, you can't handle them at all. If you want real help with finding a pet, try concidering them as real creatures and not collectables.

In short, please go buy Nintendogs and don't force a living creature to suffer.

A Little Harsh, Maybe?

First, goldfish are actually as much work and knowledge as a hermit crab, if not more, and are not a good starter fish at all. Goldfish take up a lot of space and pollute water quickly. The common goldfish grows to be 4-feet long and needs a tank or pond with at least 40 gallons. (The fancy goldfish that have been bred to be small still need half that.) They are also social animals and require an extra 12 gallons of water for each extra goldfish (10 for each extra fancy goldfish), which makes for an absolutely huge water space. Not to mention you need a filter powerful enough to clean that kind of tank and make the time to clean the tank manually yourself on a regular basis. You also need a powerful water heater for something that size. Unless you keep them in an outdoor pond in an ideal climate (or are prepared to lose some every winter), they're a lot of work and space relative to many other fish available in the pet trade. Easier fish like tetras, guppies, or mollies are much better for beginners.

That aside, I don't think being unmotivated to clean up tanks and cages translates to not being willing to care for a dog. As Grumpy pointed out, she's already had one and currently has one in the family, so she knows the ropes, and given that, I'm sure the companionship the dog provides will be provide that motivation to do things like playing, training, and taking walks. I personally find cleaning up any cage, be it a tank or a horse stall, to be a chore, but training and taking walks is often as rewarding for me as it was for my dog and cat (yes, I train and take my cat on walks - my compromise for not letting her be environmental disaster by going outside). Those experiences made getting the dog poop out of the backyard and cat poop from the litter box worth it. Grumpy may be similar in this way. So I don't think her comments indicate she shouldn't get a dog; rather, they tell me that a dog might be the best pet for her, since it's one she's willing to put the work ethic into and one she can keep the environment it needs to be kept in. I'm sure she's trying to do what's best for the animal and not thinking of it as just a collectable; otherwise she wouldn't be putting in the effort she's put into it within her family's constraints.

Yeahh.....no

I actually do know about how much care a goldfish needs. And trust me, a GOOD dog owner spends more time than that. Having an animal, and that animal not being dead, is NOT proof of good care. Pets exist because humans made them exist. Not a single one isn't from being breed by humans, or the accidental offspring of animals bred by humans. It is our responcibility to put their care first, from rutine vet visits, to daily enrichment, to researching that everything they eat isn't going to cause cancer or something (trust me, a real concern with dog foods). This is true of ALL animals. Including "low maintance" ones like fish. Grumpy has said that several cats relied on her for safety, and they not were outside, where they could be eaten by predators, ingest parasites, run over by cars, or kill off local populations of birds and rodents, but also that they never came back. That is very very bad.

She also said that she almost crushed a hermit crab to death, and that all of them promptly died. Here's a hint - that was because of a lack of proper animal husbandry, aka animal neglect.

So no, I don't think I'm being rude by saying that having a dog is clearly not something she is prepared for. And if the family allowed these animals in the past, the family is not a good match for their existing or any new pets either.

This is even FURTHER evidenced by looking for a "puppy," not a dog. Puppies are difficult even for experianced adults. They are every bit as demanding as a human child. And someone who looks for a puppy instead of a dog is someone who probably doesn't value dogs as much after they stop looking "cute."

So don't tell me I'm out of line when an animal might die.

to quote your subject

to quote your subject "yeah....no."  I only had two cats in my care.  The other two were my mom & dad's.  I was only around the age of 4/5 when we had them, so of course I didn't take care of them.  There aren't many four year olds who do that.  They ran away on my mom & dad's watch, not mine.  The cat's in my care are a different story.  The first we got rid of soley because he was not good for our family ((You kind of develop a disliking for someone after they pee on you in you bed & steal the leftover chicken after dinner)).  My second cat, Millie, I got rid of because my dog, Izzo, didn't mesh very well at all with him, & beccause he wasn't trained, which annoyed my dad.

I found him only about six months old on my doorstep, so he didn't know he wasn't supposed to pee on everything or claw the chair or go near the dog when he's eating ((My sisters dog has anxiety over what he eats because his siblings always took his food when he was little so he actually attacked Millie when he got close to him.  Poor Millie was shaking & on one occasion it took an hour to calm him down after one of these disagreements)).  And I didn't "crush my hermit crab."  I never said that, so don't make stuff up.

My best friend came over & she wanted to see him ((his name was Doodle)).  Well, Doodle hadn't moved from the same spot for a few days, which didn't bother me because I never saw him move.  Well, I went to pick him up, as I had done many times before, & had only lightly touched him, when bam!  He broke in half!  I am not kidding.  He litterally broke in half, right in the middle.  My family can testify for this.  I screamed so loud my mom came running & after that I cried so ha.rd because I thought I was the one who murdered him ((My poor friend felt so awkward, bless her heart)).  I supplied him with plenty of room to walk around, & plenty of water, but he di.ed anyway.  Sometimes thats just life.  Things di.e.  Sometimes we can'tdo anything about it, no matter what we do.  Htta doesn't make them irresponsible.

The other hermit crabs actually belonged to the rest of my family.  When they all di.ed too ((Which, remarkably, didn't happen to long after Doodle di.ed)), my mom got more from someone in a big glass terrarium & we all called one.  We didn't actually take care of them, my mom did it, even though we called them ours.  &, yet, they still di.ed ((Actually, to this day my mother isn't sure if they were all de.ad or not.  They never moved, & we never were able to make them come out of their shells unless we let them crawl into our bare hands, which made them look like weird spiders.  it was kind of annoying :P)).

You don't know anything about my family, or me.  Why should you be able to tell me I can or can't take care of an animal?  That authority is reserved for my parents.  If they think I'm responsible enough to take care of a puppy, then I am.  period.  & I must be okay at it, because I'm a pet sitter, & i've taken care of other's dogs for up to two weeks at a time, yet my neighbors still called me this week & asked me to take care of their dog ((His name is Chip, & he's such a sweetie! X3  They used to have two other dogs, but they were old & they've passed on :( )).

I still don't know why your behaving so rudely.  I just wanted help with picking a dog for pete's sake!  Everyone else seems to be keeping a level head about it.  None of them have been rude.  I'm perfectly qualified to take care of a dog, & if you don't think so, you're just gonna have to deal with it!  Its my choice, & my parent's, not yours.  To quote the wise words of my wonderful mother after I told her for the hunredth time she couldn't take care of a plant & annoyed her to rudeness: "-insert my name here-, thats rude.  That just makes me wanna buy a plant & keep it alive for ten years just so I can prove to you I can."  Lol my mom was so annoyed with me & I was so enbaressed XD  She's usually not like that, but it was funny now that I'm looking back on it.

animals are more than that

Being a parent doesn't make them good caregivers either. Puppysitting is not proof of caregiving either. I've been hired to pupsit before. Literally all it entails is feeding and checking the animal is alive. That doesn't mean you are prepared to OWN a dog, any more than watering someone else's plant for 3 days makes you an expert in that plant or protecting it from blight.

Those crabs died from neglect. Pushing off the responcibility of their care onto your parents only tells me they aren't qualified to get a new dog. And trust me, if you are getting a dog, your family is getting a dog.

I am telling you this because one day you will have to live with all the deaths your ignorance and pride caused, and you'll wish you listened to the people who tried to tell you how animal care really works. If you want to throw a hissy fit about how you're mummy's special girl and soooo good with animals, fine. But you are not prepared for real responcibility, and I will continue to try to save that animal's life from your neglect.

Wow.  I've met rude people,

Wow.  I've met rude people, but you rank very high on my list.  Its okay to tell people what they need to know but never at the cost where you make them cry/insult multible people, which you've somehow accoplished in less then a day.  I don't care what you think when your rude.  If you'd been a little kinder in your posting then I might have listened to you, but because of the childish way you've acted, I've now lost all respect for you.  I've tried to be kind to you & tollerant of you, even though you were incredibly rude to me, but you've been awful all the same.  But even though you have, I'm still going to be kind because its the right thing to do & its the way I've been told how to act as a cilvilized human being.  Even though you've been terrible to me & others, I won't stoop to a low level just because of some random person who's been terribly rude to me.  I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, & now I'm going to go watch a movie.

Woah! Rude much? Please think about your responses before posting them. I'm sure this is going to hurt Grumpy very much. Did you even read her original post? She stated she's had 13 pets in the past. I think she knows how to take care of them.

My grandma had several dogs in the past and she never walked them. They did absolutely fine and lived to ripe old ages. In fact, the dog my grandma had when she passed away is still alive and is living with my uncle. She's never been taken for a walk and has even out lived the expected age for dogs of her breed. I also don't see what your problem is with the cats she used to have. All she said was that 2 ran away and 2 had to be given away. Outside animals running away is very common as is having to give away pets for some reason. Neither of those things indicate that she didn't love them or take care of them. It's just something that happens.

I don't get where you're getting all cats should be kept indoors. My mom had lots of cats and dogs that stayed outside when she was growing up and they did just fine. They were healthy and lived a long, happy life.

Grumpy obviously loves animals and does think of them as real creatures. I honestly can't believe the rudeness contained in your reply. It's unbelievable. Please think of others' feelings before posting things.

yeah you're funny

Ok this is something people need to learn, but...

Experiance with animals is not the same as expertise with animals.

There are people who keep hundreds of snakes but don't know about care. There are people who breed dogs who don't know about care. Amount of animals in one's care is not proof of knowledge of said care.

Yes she said she had many animals in the past. But the thing is, all of them should have long life expectancies. And many, such as the cats and crabs, are said to have been in subpar conditions or have died/gone mia. This is unexceptable husbandry.

Your grandma shouldn't have been allowed to have dogs either. Sorry. That was an abusive situation. The fact they didn't D.IE is not proof that she was a good caregiver.

Your mom should have learned about cats and outdoors as well, with their dangers and the wildlife problem. Animal control does not capture cats they encounter unescorted not because they are ok on the streets when dogs are not, but simply because it is dificult to do so and they are considered less of a public hazard. If you talk to a vet about it or anyone with a background in animal husbandry, they will tell you you need to keep your cat indoors. Not knowing this is simply willed ignorance about an animal that is dependent on you.

I know exactly how my posts will be taken, and I post them because the information is more important than being friendly. I will not stand by while an animal is at risk, and frankly neither should you.

Um excuse me????????? My grandma knew excatly how to take care of animals. I loved my grandma with all my heart and I don't take kindly to you insulting her. She was a wonderful woman who showed love toward everyone. She would even catch spiders on brooms and take them outside just so she wouldn't have to kill them. Insulting my family and friends is a good way to get off on the wrong foot with me. I'm trying my best to control my temper because I'm not one who likes to fight with people but believe me, it's very difficult right now.

You are not the only one on this forum who knows about animals. Whisper's job is to work with animals so I think she knows a lot. The fact that you don't care about others' feelings and don't care whether you come off as a snob or not is ridiculous. There are ways to talk to people but you obviously don't know how nor do you care which is sad.

Animals going missing because of wandering off is not neglect. It's something that just happens. What are owners supposed to do, keep track of them every second of the day, neglecting their jobs and other responsibilites? Lots of people keep pets outdoors, and the animals roam around and sometimes don't come back. This isn't neglect, it's a fact of life.

I'm going to end this post by saying this: If you continue to be snobbish and mean towards people, you will end up getting yourself reported and in trouble by the admins. The way you're talking to people is against the rules of the forum.

What are you going to report

What are you going to report me for, hurting your feelings? Stating proper animal care and not staying silent when people claim to provide less than that? An animal breaking out is absolutely responcibility. If you worked at a zoo, and an animal "disapeared," people wouldn't say "oh that poor person had their animal leave them," they'd call their state about lack of care. Pets deserve and demand the exact same quality of care as zoo animals. And if you know so much about animal care, why are you defending improper housing instead of doing research about the care yourself?

I love my friends and relatives too. Sometimes I have to call them out because they provide improper care. When I was little, I provided animals less than perfect care too, and I kept learning and made sure to improve instead of defending what I was doing. That isn't snobbery. Snobbery would be saying something like "cat's should only eat fresh fish with vitamins" or "dogs without a pedagree don't deserve homes." Saying "this is the lowest standard of care this animal should recieve, and those who claim otherwise are incorrect" isn't snobbery. It's simply trying to improve animals' lives. So sorry you feel hurt in the process.

This was originally about a

This was originally about a lonely girl who wanted a puppy for a friend. You make it sound like everyone who doesn't meet your standards is running a dog mill. If you think we're evil treating our dogs this way, ask an expert! Whisper here knows lots. Shes the smartest person about animals i know! It would make sense if she said i treated my cat horribly. then that's one thing. But if someone who isn't an expert is telling me I'm doing horribly, while the expert says I'm doing an okay job, who am I going to believe?

All my dogs have been perfectly happy. The only time izzo was feeling any less was when Samson was put down. They were very close and he went through a very har.d time after Samson was gone. Our hermit crabs di.ed because they were in captivity, not because we were awful to them. And my other cats had to go because it was best for them. If I didn't care about them, or didn't want what was best for them, I would have kept them, but I knew they couldn't stay because they weren't right, so I have them a better home. If I honestly cared more for my needs then theirs, they'd still be here and quote "suffering" by being pet everyday and being fed home made food because all the regular store bought food isn't good for them.

I don't know why my mom and dad's cats ran away in the first place. I was four. Why am I being held responsible for something I didn't do? If you take care of your pets by reading about them everyday and feeding them five star meals and give them a castle to live in, thats great, good for you. But the average American takes their dog on walks sometimes, plays fetch with them in the backyard, feeds them store bought food, and snuggles with them. That is how I treat my pet, actually better because my family is aware of health issues and what food to buy and not.

We treat our dogs well. But then again, you wouldn't know, cause you don't know me or my family because you've never met me. You can't judge someone on how they treat their pet or anyone if you haven't let them. The only way you'd judge them is by how they act, and I don't see how I or any of my family is an awful caretaker of animals by the way I've acted ((And good grief, you've never even met my family, nor knew I had any until I posted this.

This was a post about a dog. A DOG. I'M NOT EVEN SURE IF I'M GETTING ONE. But some how from two previously owned cats who've found a better home, some hermit crabs who lived a long life, and two more cats that I don't even remember myself, you've somehow got it into your head that I'm a terrible owner and shown be reported to the law! Dude, take a chill pill or something. It's a dog!!

Wait, what?

"try concidering them as real creatures and not collectables."  & "don't force a living creature to suffer."?  Wait, what?  I love my pets & take care of them the best I possibly can!  If I didn't I wouldn't be taking care of dogs as my current paying job, nor owuld my parents be seriously considering this if i was untrustworthy.  I have always taken perfect care of my dogs, they are the best pet to fit my family because they are the only pets we've kept.  ((Have you ever tried taking care of a hermit crab?  Well if you haven't don't critizize it!  You never know if their dead or alive because they don't even move XP  Even though it seems simple their terrible pets, & you should never get one & they have very low life spans.  My mom didn't even know how many were alive during one period of time when she was taking care of them :P))

I'm only looking for one now because my other dog, Samson, passed of old age so now I am companionless.  Yes, yes, yes, I'm aware that dogs require a lot of work, but daily research on how to imrpove their training & care?  What?  This is crazy.  My parents have never done anything of the sort with our past two dogs, whom they have picked out themselves.  Both have lived a reasonable amount of time without any of those things you mentioned.  We trained them, we fed them, we played with them, & all that.  But yet we didn't do "constant research" & my old dog lived for about 13 years, & he had health issues from the beginning.

I am not some irresponsible child; I could be considered an adult now.  I have a job & plenty of time with all different dogs to know I can take care of one.  I'm just not very good at taking care of cats because I dislike litter boxes so much.  Your rudeness makes me very upset.  I didn't ask you if you thought I was responsible enough to even take care of a goldfish, I just kindly asked the forum if anyone who knew about dogs, or dog breeds that were little & required small amounts of exersize would fill me in cause I couldn't do it on my own!  Please try not to be as rude in the furture.  What you wrote greatly upset me, thinking I was some irresponsible five year old who knew nothing & shouldn't be trusted with a fish.  Next time, please try to check if what your writing is upsetting to someone else before posting.  I don't think you meant this to be upsetting but all the same it made me very upset.

((& wait a sec Whisper, you take your cat out on walks?! XD thats awesome!  How do you do that?  Do you walk it like a dog?  I've always thought that was the only way & yet it would look silly walking a cat on a leash all around the neighborhood XD  And more importantly, you have a cat?  Oh my gosh, I didn't know that, you must show me.  I love cats! X3  What kind is it? :D))

Edit:

((Also, to correct your post Hpowers, I only really took care of two cats.  The first two we got were my mom & dad's.  I was around 4/5 when we had them so I didn't take care of them at all ((In fact, I actually pulled their tails O.O  They really hated me XD))

Thanks for the correction but I still find Paxy's remarks about your cats uncalledf for. Paxy acted as if you had mistreated or neglected them which wasn't true. (Even if you did pull their tails. A lot of 4/5 year olds have a lot to learn about taking care of pets so I don't count that. :p)

Hang in there Grumpy. I know you're doing the best you can with the circumstances you have and I know you will be able to find a dog that fits your family and will be a good companion.

let me show you

If your crabs weren't moving that was a sign of unhealth.

This is an adequate set up for hermit crabs. In fact, this particular one is exactly big enough for two. It is easy to find out how much care they need, but I doubt you did the research from what you said. In fact, it sounds an awful lot like you bought them at a pet store and just believed what the people there said was fine for them.

This is how animals die. And it is not the seller's fault. They are part time employees, not specialist. It's yours.

Yes, you should absolutely be constantly learning about your pets and what new information comes to light on their training and husbandry. Your dogs being alive is not proof of good care. They only way you can know you are providing good care is by doing. continual. research.

Did you know that the "alpha dog/Cesear Milan" method of training has been revealed to be based on a myth, and that the stress of the fear caused by that kind of training can shorten a dog's life without any outward signs of particular injury? Or that  dog food brands Purina, Hill's and AvoDerm were recently proven to cause cancer? You won't know these things if you assume you know about dog care and shut out outside information. And then, when your dog dies from something you could provent, it would appear to be "old age." So yes, it is important to spend time on that.

Simply training, feeding, and playing with a dog is not enough. Even if you get a very small dog, they should be getting daily walks, because the walk isn't just for exersive. Dogs are animals that naturally would patrol their territories every day, and the scents and scentmarking behavior are cruical to proper enrichment and mental develoupment, as is the change in area while training - dog's associate training with specific places, and if you want a dog that'll be able to be called back from running into a moving car training while on walks is the only way that is going to happen.

Furthermore, small dogs tend to have a multitude of health and psychological problems that must be given extra time and care to avoid an early death.

The mere fact that you are trying to spend the next 20 years of your life with an animal and didn't know any of this before PROVES you are not ready for the responcibility of a dog.

Oh, guess what?  I've done

Oh, guess what?  I've done research.  Here is what google said about the hermit crab's life span: "Hermit crabs can live for more than 30 years in their natural habitats on tropical seashores, but after being purchased, most do not live for more than a few months to a year."  My hermit creb lived about 4-five months before passing on, which is on the higher end of living expectancy, which is a few months, which is three to four.  The other hermit crabs easily lived 6 months, maybe more if they moved, which is even longer.  You can pick on me all you want, but you can't go around saying negative things about my family.  You don't even know them!  For all you know my dad could be a legal vet!

You can scold me & be rude to me all you want, but none of this has changed my mind about anything.  Its just made me more determined.  Now that I've read all your posts I'm going to try even ha.rder then before to get a puppy & when I have him I might be too polite to say it but I'll be thinking "I told you so."  every time I take it out on walks or snuggle with it, or feed it, cause I can do anything I set my mind to, & I'll do even better now that I have more modivation!

((Fun fact; Everytime someone has said I'll never be able to do something I've always been able to do it & excelled at it.  Every doctor said I'd never ride a bike, be able to talk to strangers, or even say anything in general.  They actually thought I'd di.e twice!  But nope, I've gone on bike rides with my family, have been able to have a conversation with a stranger, I've given a speech on stage before in front of easily more then a thousand people, &, I didn't di.e!  So, I should be sayin' thank you, cause now I'm gonna get a dog, period, even if I have to save my money for years or move into my own house to get one!))

this is getting tedious.

Actually hermit crabs should live 10 years in captivity. They live that little on average because very few people who buy them provide proper care. It's exactly like how the average for goldfish in captivity is 3 months, but it honestly should be 10 years in correct conditions.

If your dad were a vet I would weep for his customers. I don't need to be best buds with someone to make an informed statement of their animal care based on presented facts. Your childish obsinance of "don't tell me what to do" doesn't change the fact that you are not prepared.

I've not been a dog owner myself so my opinion might be relativly weak. I would suggest looking into a shelter dog, breed isn't going to give much of an indicator of personality but getting to meet the dog would. As for excerise levels needed, might want to add the risk factor of the dog being overly energetic for its breed.

Actually, how would you even find a dog that doesn't require daily exersize? Only types I could even think of are very small toy breeds that can't run all that much. That wouldn't be a healthy or happy dog mind you, loving maybe but not easy maintaince.

A mixed breed might fit the needs, would def be cheaper then pedigree.

Shame to hear of your mother's phobia, those breeds have the worst luck getting adopted as is without a (debatedly biased) reputation.

May the Purple be with you ;)

Yeah, thats why a mini Aussie would fit best, because they're small, cute, less expensive then other dogs, & good with children/other dogs.  Their smaller then the regular so they still require exersize but they require less because their tiny ^_^  I actually don't want to get a really tiny dog, because we have a big dog that doesn't like really small dogs, their usually too loud for my mom's taste, & I have had bad experiences with little dogs ((Yah, my friend owns a little yippy dog, named Marty, & he pooped on everything.  EVERYTHING.  He even pooped in her dad's shoes, which made him so mad XD  Can you imagine putting on your shoes for the day & you push your feet into something squishy? Deathsong ate the subject. Run!!

Dogs esp puppies must get their energy out and yeah you can play with them but you must walk them everyday or hire somebody to walk your dog for you so they can run around the park. They MUST have exercise because if they get fat they have to go on a diet sometimes they'll get cancer if they are so over weight. I don't care what anybody says. Dogs. Need. Excerise. My dog weighs 75 pounds and all of it is pure muscle and of course bones. Sherman is a Louisiana Catahoula Leapord. He is very sweet, loves kids, gentle, barks when someone he knows walks by him and won't pet him lol just please walk your puppy every day. :) i want your puppy to be happy and very healthy.

I don't have a puppy yet.  I don't even know if I'm getting one.  I just want advice on different species.  I have had litterally ten people tell me these things already, not including my parents.  I have a huge backyard for a puppy to play in, plenty of balls, lots of treats & dog food, & enough people to keep him playing for ages.  I know your trying to be helpful, but do you know anything about what I asked for help with?  If you do, can you please share that with me instead?  If not, can anyone help me with what I need help with please?  Anyone at all?  Just different suggestions for breeds within 12-18 inches would be great at this point, cause I can't do the research on my own anymore because of the stress XP

I just remember a dog breede who might fit the needs list, a welsh corgi. My friend has one called Morgan and she is just about the sweetest dog I have ever met. Kinda on the shorter side for a breed(10-13in), pretty active as well but can work with a smaller space. Not many health issues I can find either on the breed, only one Morgan had was a hotspot she kept gnawing at(though that's not a breed issue).

The puppies are pretty dang cute as well.

Very cuddle sized.

May the Purple be with you ;)

Aww yeah I've been readin' about those guys! ^_^  I thought they were super cute & were small enough not to take up a lot of room but are still nice & I can bring it to the famrer's market! ^_^  And thank you.  You've been very helpful by just posting this, even if you thought it was unhelpful.

Good luck!

I would personally go to a shelter and look for a dog that gets along well with you and your family. That's the best way to get a good idea of the dog you're adopting, and a way to save your life. If that doesn't suit you then here are the two I'd recommend.

My first suggestion isn't a 'purebred' so to speak, but it's a popular hybrid. Labradoodles! They're a fantastic breed, and while I don't own one myself (I have a boston terrier) I'm getting one when I move out because the two my best friend has are wonderful, and the one my boyfriend has is a darling. They smart, loyal, relatively easy to maintain, and pretty great with people, dogs, and kids. They're also half poodle so there's no shedding and they're good for people who have allergies. They also tend to have the sweet, happy nature of labradors too, with added poof. They do need a bit of exercise cuz they're part retriever, but not as high maintenance as other sport dogs. I will warn you though, of the ones I know personally, they do need a lot of attention and affection and tend to get attached to one person. Depending on the size you're looking for too, you can get mini, medium, and regular sized dogs.

I also recommend King Charles Cavalier Cocker Spaniels. A small spaniel, affectinate, easy to care for, smart family pets. Easy to train, very patient, playful but not overly energetic. They're great pets, I had one when I was young. Gotta keep up on the grooming though, and even though they're small, as with all dogs, you need to give it lots of love, attention, and exercise.

Oh my gosh, you are an angel.  All you did was answer my question & I think that a Cockalier is absolutely perfect!  from the standpoint of size, price, shedding, even barking!  My dad thinks their absolutely perfect for our family ^_^  If we're able to find one in our area that fits well with me & the rest of my family, I might just get one!  Thank you so much! :D

And post pictures and the name! I don't think it'll be too hard to find one hopefully, since they're kinda poular.

English Cocker Spaniels are

English Cocker Spaniels are my favorites so far, but are too expensive, so this is a much better idea then getting a pure bred ^_^  & don't worry, I'll definetly make sure to post some pictures, along with the name if I happen to get one ^_^

Ello!  I'm bumping this again cause I've got more info, plus I promised pictures! :D

I believe I'm winning the argument of getting a puppy.  We can't find any good ones in the area yet, but I bet in a few days my mom & dad will be off work more so they can help me look.  My mom even told me my dad said he'd be willing to drive a bit to get one.  So, yeah, I think its nearly official :D  So far, Cockalier is lookin' best for the family.  Mini Aussie isn't far behind, & maybe if me & my sister beg enough, we might get a Pomsky ^_^  So, wish us luck! ;D

Also, to answer Whisper's question about animal shelters:

My dad explained to me the reason he doesn't think its a good idea to get a puppy from a shelter is there's a reason why there at a shelter in the first place, weather their not great with other kids, other animals, or whatever it is.  He didn't think it was a good place to go looking for a puppy.  Plus, there are no puppies at any of the shelters near us ((Best I could find is a 3 year old dog)), & there are so many cats it might be a bad idea to bring me XD  Their just everywhere!  The poor kitties are so less loved then the dogs & there's so many of them I wanna take them all home, which is so crazy cause I can't! X3

I know some of you are wondering, if she hasn't got a puppy yet, why did she say she had pictures?  Well, I do, but not of a new puppie.  I wanted to show everyone our family dog first X3  This is Izzo!

  GIF

Izzo says "Hello Internet!" XD  Izzo is a really goofy energetic puppy dog.  He's around 3-4 years old & perfectly healthy.  He's very spoiled, since we sometimes give him popcorn & let him snuggle on the couch, but he's sweet & loves to give you lots of cuddles in return! X3  This is him after we finished snuggling on the couch.  & I must say, he looks adorable with his little red bandana on! X3  So, yeah, thats all I had to say.  Hope y'all have a wonderful day!
