The Mysterious Frozen Fire
Chapter 15
Something Does Not Make Sense Here
“You’d better not follow me boy,” snickered the man. “If I see either of your dragon you know what might happened?” he said shaking the knife. “Now I’ll just back up down the cave here and go now.”
I wanted to rush him so bad, but I did not want my mother to possibly get hurt. I saw in my mother’s eyes that she was scared and she was breathing hard, but she gave the look, “You better follow his and don’t let this creep get away with this.”
I stood still until the creep and my mother walked back out of the light from where I was standing. I waiting a few moments after that, and then signaled both dragons to come follow me. I ran back out to the entrance of the cave.
“There’s gotta be another tunnel around here somewhere,” I said under my breath. “This is one of the old silver mines of Berk.”
I could not lose much more time, so I decided to climb on top of the cave and run across it to try and get to the other side where the cave lets out. I signaled both Fintan and Fredrick to stand guard.
I ran around the corner of the cave entrance and climbed up the side of it to now standing on top of it. I started to run across the top of the cave. Footing was rather sketchy as the heavy snowfall made the rock surfaces pretty slippery.
The terrain level increased now with ever step I took, until I got to the side of a large mountain of rock. I got to the point where I would need some assistance from something to get over this mountain for rock. There were several large trees that have grown up around the rock, so I thought I could climb one and get a better view over the mountain. From where I was standing the tree was about seven feet away; too far for me to reach and too far for me to climb over without falling to the ground below.
I thought quickly, studied my situation, and figured out a way. I stepped back a few paces and started to run. I spaced my steps out so I could push off the edge with my right foot. I pushed off in the direction of the mountain wall, taking two running steps on the wall, and then pushing off with my right foot again. I reached out as jumped through the air to grab the tree limp with my arms. I made it. I pulled myself up onto the branch to see how far up I would need to climb to see over the mountain of rock.
I climbed up ten or so branches before I could at least see over the rock mountain at least. Seeing the other side slopped downward, I thought this would be a fast way to get to the other side. I climbed up a few more branches to get to a stronger branch; strong enough to where I could stand up on it. I got to the branch and walked out as far as I could on the branch, knelt down, grabbed the branch with my arms, and lowered myself down on the other side of the rock mountain.
I saw the slope was not a considerable one, but still a slope. I eased my way down the slope so as not to lose my balance and go tumbling down it. Looking down in front of me I saw I was nearing the other side. There was a small path in part of some cleared out trees.
“This must have been where some of the villagers came to cut some wood for winter,” I thought.
I looked for some cover and spotted a large boulder. I got behind it and waited… and waited. I knew it was a long shot that my mother and the creep of a man would come this way. I had to take some chances if I were to keep with them until there was enough time to track their footprints. By then it might be too late to follow them.
A few minutes later the wind had calmed down to almost a stand still. I held my breath to listen. I heard a slight sound of snow being crunched in the foreground. Now laying flat on the ground, I edged my way to the right of the large boulder to investigate the sound without giving my position away. I saw clearly it was my mother and the creep. I did not even feel like he deserved to be called a viking.
The creep still had a hold of my mother’s neck with his arm. Mother struggled some, but his vice grip looked so great that my mother could not break free.
As they walked by my boulder, I could hear the creep talking to himself about something. It was so soft I could not make out what he was saying. I was about ready to follow them when I heard a gasp and saw my mother going limp. My heart skipped a beat. I nearly screamed out, “No!” but restrained myself from doing so.
“What’s this?” asked the creep as he stopped in his tracks.
I was practically ready to charge the creep. The guy loosened his grip and… was flipped to the ground?
“What the?!” the creep exclaimed as he was caught off guard.
“Did I see what I think I just saw?” I asked myself. “Did I see my mother just fake going unconscious, bait the creep, and then make him do a front flip with only her arms??”
With my eye brows raised I watched in amazement as my mother took on the creep. The guy was three or so inches taller than she was and had fifty or so pounds on her.
“So you wanna play it the hard way Svana, eh? Fine by me,” stated the man as he started to rush my mother.
She merely jumped to the side and watched him jump past her and go head first into a mound of snow. I kind of chuckled.
“Alright,” said the creep. “You wanna fight? Well you got one.”
The creep then put up his fists and edged his way towards mother. She simply slightly raised her hands. When the creep got within three feet of her he threw a right cross. She leaned back to dodge his swing and slapped his fist away. He countered with a left cross and she merely jumped back and made him look like he swung wildly.
“Man my mother is… is... is awesome,” I smiled to myself.
The man started getting frustrated and tried a haymaker. Mother avoided the swing, grabbed his arm, knelt down, and threw him over him. Thud! The creep got up dazed and off-balance. My mother then went on the offensive threw some punches of her own in a matter of seconds. Right jab to the face. Another right jab then left cross. She then threw a right uppercut on the chin then right knee to the chest. The beaten up creep then stumbled back and fell to the ground. Mother then stepped back a few steps.
“You… can’t… de.. defeat me,” the creep struggled to talk while stood up. “I’vvve.. been.. er.. ordered to br.. ring you in.”
The creep then gathered some strength and rushed my mother. She was ready for him and… and did a three-hundred and sixty degree turn with a flying kick to the guys face. I did not know if I was more shocked by what the creep just said or the incredible move my mother just pulled off. My mother just stood there as she was probably trying to get a grasp of the situation.
I walked out from behind the cover of the boulder and said, “That was aweso-,”
Swoosh!
Mother must have not known it was me as she swung back around with a sweeping left leg kick coming right at me. I had only seconds to react, but was not quick enough as her foot came right to my face. I was only able to lessen the blow as I leaned back enough just to get a glancing blow. I fell back and landed on the snow.
“Oh Jarl,” mother said putting her hand to her mouth. “I didn’t know you were behind me. Are you hurt?”
I grabbed the hand she held out to me and stood up.
“No, I think I am good. Though I may have a bruise on my left eye,” I said grabbing my jaw, practically the whole side of my face.
Mother chuckled, “You might be the only Berkian to ever be nearly knockout by their mother.”
“Yeah,” I laughed. “Very impressive moves there, where’d you learn them?”
Mother answered, “From adventures on your father’s and mine longer travels on the seas.”
We both looked back because we were alerted by a groan from the creep who was on the ground. He started to get so I rushed over, grabbed his arm, and helped pull him to a standing position.
“Wha…. Where am I?” the creep asked.
“You attack my mother and threatened her with a knife!” I exclaimed.
The creep looked quite dazed, “Who attacked with a knife?”
“You did,” I stated.
“Jarl,” mother said. “I think there is something wrong with this man.”
“You can say that again,” I replied as I helped mother take him over to a smaller boulder to sit down. Do not know why I am helping this creep over, but I am.
“How’d did I get here? Where am I?” the man kept insisting.
I started thinking probably the same thing my mother was, “I think you knocked this guy harder than you think mother,” I told my mother. I then addressed the guy, “Do you not remember how you got here on Berk?”
“Berk?” the guy replied quite surprised. “Last thing I remember I was not on Berk.”
Mother then asked, “Do you remember you name, at least?”
The guy stopped to think for a moment and said, “My name is Koll Valgardson. You said I attacked you two?”
“What are you saying that you wouldn’t attack us?” I said puzzled.
“I would never do a thing like that,” the man said. “What I cannot understand is how I got on Berk?”
Mother stated, “So you are saying that you do not know me or my son?”
“Yes, that is what I am trying to say… I think,” the man said at the same time grabbing his head. “Why do I have a massive headache?”
“When you attack my son and I, you took me as hostage. You had grabbed me by my neck and started leading me back with you out of the cave,” mother told the guy. “As we were walking down this pathway, I faked going unconscious. When you fell for it, I threw you to the ground. You started to fight and I knocked you out in the process.”
“I do not remember doing any of that,” the man said plainly. “The last thing I remember is setting sail for Outcast Island on a trading mission for Trader Johann.”
“Trader Joahnn?!” both me and my mother announced at the same time.
The man looked up, “What do you know Johann?”
“Why yes we do, he is a good friend of ours and comes to Berk every so often,” mother replied.
“Yes I know, he talks about Berk a great deal,” the man mentioned. He then bent down to grab some snow to put on the side of his head.
“So…. you did not come here to kidnap my mother?” I questioned.
“No,” he said as if there was no shadow of a doubt.
Mother inquired further, “Is there anything after setting sail that you can remember?”
The man thought for a moment, “I do now actually. After setting sail, I ran into the massive blizzard. I secured all of merchandise and went down below in my ship to take cover. Once the blizzard had gone through, I found myself blown completely off course. I did however see an island. When I had reached it, the men who had helped me bring my ship ashore said I had sailed into Berserker waters. I knew that couldn’t be good; so I started to say I was going to leave just as soon as I checked over my boat. Someone behind me said something like, ‘I recognize you!’ in an angry voice. Before I could say anything… I must have been knocked out as that is the last thing I remember.”
“Speaking of recognizing you, I did when I saw you run past The Great Hall in Berk,” mother spoke. “Have you ever been to the far northeastern islands?”
“No I have not,” the man replied. “Though,” the man added. “I did have a twin brother and an uncle who were sailors. My uncle had been up that way a few times. My brother had always been bad trouble. He got in with the wrong crowd and once got arrested for trying to renegade a small shipping vessel. After that I did not see him for several months. Until one day my uncle told me he saw a battle-beaten ship come to port. He went to investigate as he was a well known captain in those parts, to see what was going on. He found out that my brother had on the way back from the battle the renegading ship had been in.”
“Interesting,” I said and gave a look to my mother.
Mother decided, “Why don’t we go back to Berk and you can tell Trader Johann for yourself… what happened to your ship.”
“He is here already?” the man asked. “He must have had favorable winds. The blizzard front probably helped him get in ahead of schedule.”
“That he did,” I said as all three of us got up and started back to the front of the cave to pick up Fintan and Fredrick.
“Could this guy be telling the truth,” I talked to myself while walking. “He sound sincerely enough that he did not do what he did to us. But how could that be if mother and I were witnesses to what he did? Does he think he can get away with this by playing innocent? I don’t know why he would mention Trader Johann, but he will be the deciding factor if Koll Valgardson’s story checks out. We’ll find out once we get back to Berk. Something does not make sense here.”
The guy says he's innocent... but...
I'm not so certain. I should know. I can tell.
Also... MAMA POWA!!!
Why did I not get a pm about this?
Somehow I think the evil twin is behind this. Or maybe some kind of mind control... or temporary amnesia...
And Jarl's mom is awesome!!
Svana is her name, right?
I'm very intrigued as to where this is going. can't wait for what's next!
Subject says it. I don't feel like being redundantly repetitive :)
