Thanks!

Thanks! It's one of my favorite things to do, match up myth and actual creatures such as prehistoric ones. For example, the pheonix in legend is a fire bird that dies and rises from the ashes anew, so in my fantasy I draw the pheonix as an archeoptyrx with bright red, orange and yellow plumage. Every year they molt and lose all their plumage, so they fly to volcanic mountains where it's warmer and make dust baths out of the ashes. When someone is walking by the ashes they might startle one of the birds out, and what had looked only weeks ago on the brink of death now took to the sky with new plumage and new life

Oh that's a really cool idea

Oh that's a really cool idea to explain the origin of this legend! As it turns out, there are phoenix-like birds all over Asian myth, so I think there could be an element of truth to it. The Russian version is the firebird, and it had nothing to do with fire--- it could glow with fiery colors, and its feathers would keep glowing after being shed. A similar legend is the ercinee of the Black Forest. If these legends are true or at least parts of them are true, then there could be a way for some sort of bird to glow with the mechanism in its feathers instead of in its body directly. I haven't figured out what kind of mechanism that would be, but it's something I use in developing my fantasy creatures and believable versions for my historical fiction/fantasy.

OMG, I love how you incorperated folklore, I'm an ABSOLUTE NERD when it comes to folklore! Wendigos are among one of my top favorites, with Alps coming close behind. Tikbalans are pretty interesting too. *Runs around in circles* Goodness, I am so glad I stopped by your thread. Yeeee!

Nice!

In every story there's an eliment of truth, I often wonder what started so many of the strange and... well... scary legends that we have today. Sometimes I wonder if it wasn't something simple, like an animal that people didn't know much about or at all and the story snowballed into tales of terrible monsters, or maybe a natural phenomenon like the bermuda triangle. So many theories to explore...

Now you'll have to forgive me but I can't remember what an Alp is. Is it something like a yeti? The only thing I can think of is the yeti-like creature on the Matterhorn Mountain ride in disneyland :P ^^

That's alright; Alps are that commonly known when compared to other monsters. I made an online quiz about folklore, so I'll just copy my reserch from it onto here for you ^-^

Name(s): While Alp is traditionally a male title (plural: Alpe, Alpen), the terms Mara and Mart were used if such creature was feminine, but this was rare. This creature is also known as Trud, Mahr, Schrat, and Walrider.

Name Translations/Etymology: The word “alp” itself is a Common Germanic word translating to “elf.” An alp attack is called an “Alpdruck” or “Alpdrücke,” and was the reasoning behind the German word “Alptraum” (“elf dream”), which means “nightmare.”

Home and Origin: Originating from old German lore speaking of troublesome elves and spirits, they quickly spread throughout neighboring countries, but under different names and superstition.

General Appearance: Most alpe are male, with rare accounts of a female alpe. There is not a true description of an alp because of their shapeshifting powers to transform into either a cat, pig, dog, snake or a small white butterfly. Sometimes, an alp may be all human who doesn't realize they are changing to such a creature just like a werewolf. They are also known to were a hat or other piece of clothing (called a “Tarnkappe”) that they channel their powers from, as well as giving them the ability to turn invisible similar to a cloak of invisibility.

Powers and Abilities: Preying mostly on females and attacking only at night, they were the early explanation for sleep apnea and sleep paralysis by sitting upon the victim's chest. Slowly, they will become heavier to a crushing weight and will not move until the dreamer wakes up (if they hadn't been suffocated). They are also known to enter dreams, control them, and create horrible nightmares. Alpe also possess an "evil eye" whose gaze will inflict illness and misfortune. Removing or damaging this eye also removes the Alp's malicious intentions.

Weaknesses include iron horseshoes and crosses, mirrors, daylight or any other source of light in general, and, oddly, lemons.

Other Information: Alpe are know to reflect their past elf-side by souring milk and re-diapering a baby with the previous soiled one. They tangle hair into “elf knots,” chew and twist horse tails, ride said horse into total exhaustion, crush small farm animals like geese and ducks to death, causing minor illnesses, and milk cows dry due to their love of milk. Quite the list!

AND here's an popular painting made by an artist on how he saw what the Alp looked like:

(it's not the horse. . .)

:D Tada, that's my spill of the day.

Oops I thought I replied to this sorry o.O

Ahhh, now I remember reading about these. I thought it interesting that they're name means elf- I usually think of elves in a more posative light (LOTR, lol) and forget that in lore they're usually troublesome.

So... just a thought, but it looks like nightmare is the femanine term for the elf? nightmare- Nightmara? Also I think that the horse (who is not the alp) looks like a white version of the night mares in The Guardians which is probably not a coincidence. Those eyes D:

Anyway thanks for sharing Andrea this was really interesting. You put in a lot of work and research into that quiz!

The Grypheonx

The

Grypheonx

It’s a Phoenix! It’s a Griffin!

It’s a Dragon.

The Great Grypheonx is an exception to the hot-headed stoker-class rule. These dragons are even tempered, noble rulers of their domains. They have a calming affect on the other species of dragons living under them and treat them with respect and dignity.

That’s not to say the Grypheonx is a docile creature. On the contrary, a Grypheonx that has been moved to anger is terrifying to behold. They will burn down fortresses and entire islands in their explosive fury.

Size:

Length: 120-30ft (tail included)

Height: 30-35ft

General Description:

Males: Two talon-like forlegs, two reptilian hind, two wings, long tail with large, sharp plates on both sides. Long neck covered in spikes (i.e. Bewilderbeast), beak like snout with teeth, large eyes.

Females:

Same minus the neck-spikes and tail plates

Color:

Fiery red, yellow, and orange, and occasionaly coal black

Male and Female Examples:

Inspirations:

Phoenix

Lion

Eagle

Bewilderbeast

Monstrous Nightmare

Monarchy (the good kind tho XD)

Glossary:

The King (Alpha Male)

The Queen (Alpha Female)

Omega (Male subordinate- often adolescent)

Maiden (Female subordinant)

Pride (Group)

Cub (Hatchling)

Class:                    Stoker

Ability:                 N/A

Attack:                 10

Speed:                 6

Armor:                 7

Shot Limit:          3

Venom:                0

Jaw Strength       5

Stealth                 0

Fire Type:

Nitroglycerin

Offense: Spitting nitroglycerin over their enemies and igniting it from a safe distance

Defense: lighting their manes, tails and wings on fire, clawing with their talons, whipping their sharp, plated tails into the offender

Courtship:

A male searches out a female. Grypheonxes are not common so they will travel hundreds of miles in search of a mate. When he finds one, he approaches cautiously, not landing until she gives the ‘ok’ to his presence. When he lands he begins to flirt, clacking his beak, shimmering his wings, teasing and romping. Such immature behavior is usually below a fully grown Grypheonx, but love makes them feel like young and foolish.

If she’s impressed she’ll bob her head, and take to the sky. He’ll fly after her and up above the clouds they’ll lock talons. Together, wings flapping idly in the wind they’ll careen down towards the ocean or ground and a split second before crashing- disengage and fly back up. After this the male will lead her to his volcanic home

Challanging:

For a Mate:

Because suitors come from hundreds of miles around there’s almost always a challenger for the Maiden’s hand… or talon. Gryheonxes battle savagely for their mates, sometimes to the death. They live shorter lives than the females due to battle wounds.

The fight begins with a tossing of their fiery manes and circling. They wave their tails in the air too, showing how sharp, who many, and how long their plates are. If neither back down the Grypheonxes battle talon to talon, tooth to tooth, and tail to tail. They never use their firepower in a battle over a mate

For Territory:

Battles for territory are not something you want to witness because more than likely you’ll be part of it. It starts when the Alpha King is away; perhaps wooing a female, hunting, or simply observing a new group of creatures arriving in his territory, and an Omega forcibly takes over.

This is one of the few things that triggers the King into a state of fury- especially if he has a mate. These battles do involve firepower and in a blind rage a King may destroy his entire territory in order to flush out and k.ill the intruding dragon. The battles, with very few exceptions, end in death of one or the other.

Incidentally the same deathmatch will ensue if a Green Death attempts to take over the Grypheonxes’ territory. The Green Death usually wins, being the bigger dragon, but the Gryphoenx alpha is more apt to have his wits about him and draw the bigger dragon away for the battle, keeping the territory intact and giving his mate a chance to flee.

Hunting/Diet:

Scauldrons are a Grypheonxes’ favorite food among other large marine creatures. They’re like giant fish to them. Lava Louts make good snacks too… taste like tater tots to the Grypheonx XD all in all they’re not picky eaters which in the long run is very good for the eco system.

Poison:

None

Natural Enemies:

The Green Death.

Hatchlings:

Hatchlings are playful, curious, and bold. They enjoy chasing the Lava Louts and pushing their luck with the occasional Howlian.

Eggs:

Eggs stand about three ft tall, they’re fiery red and yellow. The eggs need warmth but can’t be exposed to the lava itself so the mother has to sit on them.

Fun Facts:

The Grypheonx live in and near volcanos. They can swim in the lava.

They’re ok with sharing territory with a Howlian; one of Chameishida’s fan dragons. But an Eruptodon makes a volcano crowded. Lava Louts are fine because if there gets to be too many of them the Grypheonx will just eat them.

They don’t normally drive said dragons out of their nests, preferring to find an unclaimed volcano, or dig one out than pick a fight.

They can dig out and activate dormant volcanos, and even sniff out ones that haven’t yet breached the surface.

An Eruptodon that accidentally attempts to move in to a Grypheonxes’ home while they’re away will be harassed but not fought. The Eruptodon will realize it’s mistake and move on.

Most Grypheonxes either live in solitude or with one mate, because most volcano’s cannot support a full-fledged pride. This forces the young to leave home and find volcanic activity elsewhere. However, an inland chain of Volcanos is ideal for a big family and a well-established monarchy can live and grow in such a place for decades

The Queen and Maidens help each other out with the hatchlings, whether or not they have their own.

The King is forbidden to meet his offspring until they are half a year old because the female doesn’t trust him not to harm the young

Kings are usually very gentle to their offspring. They even romp and play with them.

A mating pair will raise 1-3 hatchlings every 10 years.

The oldest Grypheonx recorded was 489 years old. They average 300 years for a female and 200 for males

They take a long time to grow, and are very trainable/ridable between the years of 10-50

A males’ mane and tail excretes similar gel to the Monstrous Nightmare and can ignite.

They are called “Great Grypheonx” for their massive size

Chipperguin

Hi all! Been a while since I posted. Must admit; I was getting all wound up in the coming of HTTYD3. Now that I've seen the movie I feel like I'm up-to-date on what's cannon and what not, and hoping to do a little writing in the near future but we'll see.

Here's a a friendly dragon to keep you company!

The Chipperguin

“Go to the Chipperguin, and learn her ways.”

There is much to be gained in a study of this dragon. Without a leader, each one works all day to collect food and maintain their home- not for themselves but for the whole colony. They’re not all work though. Once in a while these cheerful creatuers take a day off just to sing, run and play with each other

Size:

Height: 1 1/2ft on all fours. 3-4 standing upright

Length: 5-6 Ft

General Description: Four legs, two thick, whale-like flippers/wings, thick tail no fins. Pointed nose with vibrant red tip, crest on back of head.

Color: Black or brown body, Variable white/cream underbeally, markings on back and legs, around eyes and on crest and back.

Inspirations:

Ant

Humpback whale

Penguin

Otter

Laser

Glossary:

The six classes: Worker, Hunter, Fighter, Soldier, Nurse, Princess

Pup- young chipperguin

Social status:

Keeper (Janitor and storage guard)

Captain (experienced Soldier)

Engineer (experienced worker)

Spearhead (experienced hunter)

General (experienced fighter)

Queen (Alpha princess)

Class:                    Tidal

Ability:                Concentrated laser fire

Attack:                 7

Speed:                 6

Armor:                 2

Shot Limit:          4

Venom:                0

Jaw Strength       4

Stealth                 3

Fire Type:

Long lasting laser fire that can carve through ice and rock

Animation:

Penguin in water and upright. Otter on all fours and in water

Offense:

Full colonial attack (brought on by the destruction of or intrusion of the trap. Individuals use laser fire after. If on land they’ll stomp their fore-feet and raise their tail three times before firing.

Defense:

Retreating to the Trap (the colony home). Fleeing, either by jumping into the water or out of it depending on their antagonist.

Courtship:

Chipperguins have a mating season and it begins with singing. Male dragons wander around the colony singing until their song harmonizes with one of the female’s songs. If they court, they do so by singing to each other until both their songs have changed to blend the two songs together. If not they merely walk on. Chipperguins mate for life.

Challanging:

No known challenging, there’s always a scuffle or two with this many dragons milling about, but they have no reason to fight since they share territory and mate for life.

Social:

Chipperguins have a highly complex social structure and are one of the few dragon species with rolls to perform in their community.

*Please Note: although there are authorative figures in chipperguin society, chipperguins do all the work of their own accord. None of them are made to do anything.*

Keeper- any chipperguin (often soldiers) assigned to guard stored food/water, or groom the trap. Guarding the food and water stores includes keeping stocked fish alive, bio-luminescent fields growing, and distributing food.

Soldier- smallest chipperguin and lowest ranking. Sort of the jack-of-all-trades, when not in battle or patrolling they fill-in wherever needed. In an attack situation they’re either on the front lines, creating diversions, or helping to direct traffic/evacuations.

Captain- Old experienced Soldier. Captains will organize evacuations in times of peril or lead the soldiers into battle.

Worker- size and social status between soldier and hunter. They build/carve out all the tunnels and are the most numerous of all six chipperguin classes.

Engineer- Old, experienced worker.

Nurse- These are the middle-size dragons, between hunters and fighters on the big end and workers and soldiers on the smaller end. As their name suggests they care for the young, sick and injured. Social status is neutral.

Hunters/gatherers- Chipperguins that go out to collect food, slightly bigger than workers. Social status: Above workers below fighters.

Spearhead- Experienced hunter. Will teach younger hunters where best fishing and hunting spots are

Fighter- Biggest chipperguin and second highest ranking in social status. Fighters do the heavy work (moving rocks and boulders) when they aren’t patrolling or protecting the trap. Fighters can tell soldiers what to do.

General- Old experienced fighter. Occasionally a soldier becomes a general. Generals tell fighters and soldiers what to do.

Queen/princess: Highest ranking social status but same size as soldier chipperguins, incidentally. They can’t exactly ‘control’ the colony but they can impress upon individuals a line of action. The Queen makes the major decisions for the colony; i.e. going to war, evacuating, etc.

Hunting/Diet:

Firsh, seagulls, seaweed, coral, marine life

Poison: None

Natural Enemies:

Most aquatic dragons and Kytes. Occasionally they’ll feud with Hodgepodges over territory.

Hatchlings:

Hatch grey instead of black and white. The parents keep them in the nursery until their scales change to black.

Eggs:

White with black speckles, twice the size of a chicken egg.

Training:

Chipperguins are eager learners, sometimes a little too much so. It’s not uncommon for them to get ahead of the lesson and not learn it fully. Just be patient, their little dragon hearts are in the right place they just need to slow down and listen.

Fun Facts:

Chipperguins cannot fly

Sliding scale, from lowest social rank to highest:

Keeper, soldier, worker, Engineer, nurse, hunter, Spearhead, Captain, fighter, pincess, General, Queen

Although there are generals and captains etc, no chipperguin is made to do anything, they get the work done on their own accord.

Their laser fire can last up to 30 seconds

Laser fire is used strictly for defense of the trap. A chipperguin will not use it otherwise, even if its life is endangered.

They are plucky and cheerful, and the hardest workers you’ll ever meet.

“Chipper” part of chipperguin is inspired by the dragon’s singing. Chipperguins communicate vocally, in the form of whistling and it sounds very pleasant and cheerful.

The home, or trap as it is called, that chipperguins build for themselves is usually carved from ice or rock and consists, like an ant hill, of many long, narrow passages, food storage areas, nurseries, apartments and waste areas.

If a pod of scauldrons or the like stake out the Trap they’re in for a long wait. Chipperguins keep at all times enough food stored up to last the colony a month, and if push comes to shove they have almost militant order for combat.

They rarely stand on two feet. When they do, it's usually to imitate humans as they follow them around

The white part of their bodies can glow when they shake. This is due to the bio-luminescent algea the hunters have gathered and keepers have allowed to grow in the trap’s water systems.

They fight like cats and dogs with Hodgepodges, and aren’t friendly with Muddycries (fan species of Chameishidas’) Both are inclined to change the course of freshwater on the surface which can lead to chaos in the chipperguins underground water supply.

Chipperguins love eels. So if you have a bunch of eels to get rid of and no typhomerangs you know where to go!

They're very squeezable. Just try not to hug them too tight; they might accidentally fire if you do!

Yep! It used to be on Nickolodeon, but they were taken off. Finding the DVD's for them is pretty hard, and since I don't have anything fancy like Netflicks, I'm not even sure if you could watch it online. I imagine you could, though!

Yeah they're not on netflix

Yeah they're not on netflix :-( Some of them are on Amazon I just found out, so gonna watch a few of those :D

Haha, penguins vs dragons would be hilarious! I get the feeling the pengiuns wouldn't even be phased that there there are dragons, and assume their mysteriuos 'non-existance' was just another government conspiracy xD

For all my Chipperguin fans ^^

I was so happy you guys like the chipperguin that I've made an animation for you all! Enjoy!

Another fun fact; chipperguins usually run around on all fours, but if they're following a human they try to imitate them and walk on just two feet

The Compass

Hi again everyone! Stopping in with a new oldie!

This dragon started with making a traditional dragon that you might read about in old stories, then explaining the reasons behind some of said legends. Enjoy!

The Gilded Compass

Synopsis:

Compass dragons are the most common in the world, and as such

Many of the stories about dragons come from these.

They are huge, fire-breathing winged lizards that have a taste for livestock, hoard treasure in caves and attack castles.

But there’s more to that story than meets the eye!

Size:

(Male) Height 7ft Length 42ft

(Female) Height 14 Length 84

General Description:

Male: Four legs, long forked tail, two bat-like wings, long neck. Scales and skin. Horse-like head with varying amounts of horns.

Female: Same only without front legs, and twice to three times as large

Color: Dependent on sub-species. Almost any but always solid.

Female on left, male on Right

Inspirations:

Flamingo

Reptiles in general

Classic Dragon and Dragon Lore

Truffle hunter pigs

Camel

Packrat

Falcons

Glossary:

Drake or Tiercel (male)

Wyvern or Falcon (female)

Hatchling (baby)

Class:                    Tracker/Boulder

Ability:                 Vein trackers

Attack:                 7

Speed:                 6

Armor:                 6-10 (sub-species dependent)

Shot Limit:          9

Venom:                0

Jaw Strength       8

Stealth                 5

Fire Type:

Regular fire. They can also spew molten metal/stone

Offense: Flying over and burning their targets, tooth and claw

Defense: Breathing fire, spitting metal or molten rock, or of course tooth and claw

Social:

Anti-social, most commonly found alone.

Courtship:

No rituals. The pair stay together for two or three months or until the female chases the drake away. They don’t mate for life

Challanging:

Compasses, both male and female will fight over territory for days. Sky battles are most destructive, and unlike the Grypheonx they don’t care what burns.

Hunting/Diet:

Aside from their mineral/metal/stone intake, Compasses are opportunistic carnivores and somewhat omnivorous. Preference- livestock. It’s fat and healthy and usually standing around in easily accessible fields. They also will eat tree fruits, nuts, vegetables, and fish.

Special ability:

Dependent upon sub-species, Compass dragons eat metals, stones or minerals. Each sub-species has a specific metal/ stone. Copper, Silver, Pyrite, Quartz, Marble, Opal, Ruby, and Gold are a few of the different sub-species diets, and their names are according to their intake. I.E. the above compass is a Gilded Compass.

These dragons sniff out metals/stones in veins, dig them out and eat them, then live in the caves that they create.

Compass dragons grow tail-forks, horns, spines, and scales according to their sub-species diet. I.e. The gilded compass’s scales are practically gold coins. Their horns and spikes are solid gold.

Armor ebbs and wanes by the amount of metal/stones a compass takes in. In good days, when they find a vein of metal they will eat it all over a course of time. In that time their horns, spines, and tail-fork grow bigger, more horns will sprout up if it is a good vein and the scales will be rich and full and cover their whole body.

In bad days when there are no veins to be found these dragons slowly use up the metals stored in their body, and the horns, tail-fork, and spines will shrink down. If they use up these and still don’t find another vein they’ll start losing scales. A compass missing patches of scales is in very bad shape, if it loses all of them it will die.

Natural Enemies:

Man

Other Compasses

Habitat/Territory

Everywhere south of the Archipelago in Europe and Eurasia. They do venture up into northern regions but their cold blood doesn’t like it very much. Fossils indicate that they were once prevalent throughout the world, even in the Americas.

Hatchlings:

Mothers care for the young up to two years. Then they’re up and on their own in the big world. If you’re looking to train one out of the wild this is a good time to do it.

Eggs:

Species dependent

Personality:

Vain, salty, a bit lofty, but loyal to good trainers.

Training:

Bonding: Compasses are not good dragons to get as hatchlings/eggs. They need their mother for the first two years of their lives (it is possible to take care of a young compass in the event that it’s mother cannot, however the risk of the little dragon dying is very high). The best time to try and bond with one is around the two year period where they are still very impressionable but hardy enough to start taking care of themselves.

General Training: Compass dragons can be distant and unpredictable, so be careful if you’re training one. Like the Nadder they’re vain and they like being told how beautiful they are, but if you sound too much like a bowing servant they’ll treat you as such. You’ll have to draw a line for personal space because they also have a very bad habit of stealing metals/stones and stashing them away in your house. It’s a fine line to walk, but it can be done and when it is you have a powerful ally and friend at your side.

Tracking: One thing that compass dragons love to do is track and this requires little to no training. Not animals or birds or fish, but metals and stones. Depending on your sub-species of Compass you’ll find wherever you fly you’ll always end-up above a vein of their metal/stone. As you can imagine this is a pretty big perk for Compass trainers! Just remember to let them have their share of the find.

Fun Facts:

Males are drakes while females are wyverns, as unlike the drakes they have no fore-legs. Wyverns are often much bigger than drakes, and between size, no fore-legs(for females), subspecies, and state of armor two dragons might not be recognizable as the same species.

Because the females are wyverns they're not as good at digging as the drakes. Sometimes they'll wait until a drake has dug a good cave out, then being the bigger they'll chase it away.

Their armor varies in strength. I.e. A Gilded Compass is a 5 in armor, but a Ruby Compass is a 10

Compass scales are about the size and width of coins. It’s possible that the concept of coinage was inspired by these scales.

Desperate Compasses are the ones in stories that attack castles; they can smell the precious metals inside and are willing to risk it all to get at them.

They have an unrelenting drive to backstock the metals/stones they need, making what many saw as a treasure hoard.

The price of their precious hides and treasure stores make them big targets in the dragon hunting/smuggling world, and they’re also sold alive as vein trackers. Less-aggressive persons will simply collect shed scales and horns with trained dogs.

The compasses signature attack is spewing molten metal/stone at its aggressor. The ironic fate of many a compass-hunter; they got what they were looking for, only as a sarcophagus!

All compasses feed on precious metals, stones, or minerals, or at least something that in it’s pure form has a market value. Save for The Pyrite Compass, otherwise known as the Fools’ Compass. Many entrepreneurs have found themselves up a creek without a paddle when they realized their gold digger was a pyrite digger!
