Last and First
A rock fell from above, striking me on the top of my head. Sparks flew behind my eyes, though opening my lids did little to allow extra light. My own torch had died out long ago, mostly due to the dampness in the air. My hands found another hand hold and I pulled myself higher. I looked up and almost cried from relief. Daylight, blessed sunlight just twenty feet above me. Below me I heard my dragon scream in pain, the sound pushing me faster. I knew my strength would give out before I could reach help, but maybe I could reach screaming distance of a village or something. Grabbing the final ledge I hauled my exhausted carcass over the edge and sat up. My heart dropped.
"No," I whispered. The sea surrounded the cave my dragon and I had taken to, thinking it shelter from the storm three days before. I finished off the last of the fresh water before jumping into the ocean swearing to high Valhalla as the cold shocked me. A shadow passed overhead. Looking up I saw a person riding a dark dragon. I couldn't tell who it was, but I recognized the characteristic shadow of a Night Fury. Back home there were about thirty of the buggers. I pulled out my medallion, after grabbing hold of a piece of driftwood. I stabalized myself and using a technique I had practically mastered when I was at full strength, I held up two fingers lining them up with the dragon's field of vision. I angled the reflection so that it passed between my fingers, hitting its mark perfectly. My strength faltered then failed altogether. Just before darkness claimed me I heard the beating of heavy wings, a voice calling out to me, and then blessed darkness.
"Toothless?" I asked leaning over him a little concerned. We had just passed by some rather interesting sea stacks when he began acting really weird. He flew in a tight circle angled so we were on a gradual collision course with the ocean. Finally he leveled out, heading back toward something floating on the water. My stomach leapt to my throat. "That's a person. Come on, bud, let's go see if they need help. Hey! You there! Are you alright?"
The still figure slipped off the driftwood they had been draped across and sank beneath the waves. Toothless and I dove after them. A young woman, about my age, twenty, was sinking toward the bottomless depths of the ocean. I crouched lower, making myself streamline with my dragon as he bucked and swam down, chasing the girl. I caught her in my arms just as Toothless pulled up. We surfaced and she seemed to revive a bit.
"Noel?" she murmured, lifting her head slightly.
"Don't worry, you're safe now," I said. She went limp again. I coaxed Toothless homeward and we sped away from the area, climbing slightly to avoid the worst of the spray. Landing a short while later, my girlfriend, Astrid came running up, stopping short when she realized I had someone in my arms.
"I hope it's not what it looks like, Hiccup," she said eyeballing the woman warily.
"Babe, Toothless and I found her floating in the ocean. She's hurt and needs help, that's all," I said when the other villagers arrived.
"Bring her here," a woman said from the crowd. "I have a spare bed. You can bring her to my place until she recovers."
"Thank you, Velma," said my father coming upon the scene by chance. We followed Velma to her place. There was indeed a spare bed downstairs by the fire. I set my charge on it, brushing a stray hair from her face.
Who is this girl? And where did she come from? Why was she floating in the middle of the ocean? I thought straightening and heading out. "Let me know when she wakes up, okay Velma?" I asked her. She nodded quickly, eager to be of some assistance. I turned and left with a quick backwards glance.

Well, actually interesting. X) But very similar to the middle of the story, is not it? So I do not really understand the meaning. But all in all, well done!
I felt the darkness swirl around me and I knew I was asleep. I didn't know how long I'd been asleep, but my bed felt too uncomfortable, and my blanket too scratchy. Wait, rough blanket and bed that is too hard? Oh no. I opened my eyes and saw daylight filtering through some cracks in the walls, creating beams in the smoky air. I lifted my head and looked around. A woman I'd never seen before was sitting on a humungous chair by a fire sewing something. I tried to get a better look while making no noise, but my back cracked as I sat up. She turned around.
"Banshee!" she screamed dropping everything and running out of the house.
"Banshee?" I repeated softly. Someone came through the door with steps similar to the Headmaster of my Academy's. I looked up eager to see his face. Definitely not Headmaster. "Who are you?"
"My name is Hiccup. My dragon, Toothless, and I rescued you. Noel, isn't it?" said the stranger who walked in.
"Noel. My name's not 'Noel' my name is Evangeline," my voice broke sending tears down my cheeks as I remembered Noel. "Where am I and how long was I out?"
"You're on Berk," the man called Hiccup replied. "As for how long, only about a day. Our elder came it to check you over before leaving."
"Oh! That's the woman I saw sitting in that chair, right?" I asked pointing. Realizing what I was doing I pulled my hand back.
"What? No, that was Velma. She offered a place for you to recover from your ordeal. I'm sure she'll be back," he said confidently. A giant came squeezing through the door.
"By Valhalla, it is true! Hiccup, get away from that beast from Hel," boomed the giant.
"Dad, no! This isn't some banshee," said he jumping quickly between myself and it. "She's just confused. She says her name is Evangeline. She may have a lot of mystery about her, but that doesn't make her evil."
"Oh really? Well look at her eyes," the woman everyone called Velma hollered.
"Beard of Thor," came the soft exclaimation. Another woman pushed their way into the room, holding a vicious looking blade.
"YAHH!!!! I'll kill you beast, or go to Valhalla in a glorious battle!" she cried charging at me. Purely by instinct, and by some miracle, I grabbed for my hidden knives and drew them. Bringing them above my head to guard myself I put my strength into keeping this young girl, woman I supposed, from cleaving me in two. An arm grabbed her about the waist pulling her back and away from me. Again, the one they called Hiccup came to my rescue.
"Let's just hear her story first, okay?" he said gesturing for my attacker to drop her weapon and for the giant he called "Dad" to take his hand off the enormous hammer in his belt. They did so reluctantly. "Better. Now, Evangeline, where did you come from? Why were you in the ocean? Why do you have such strange eyes?"
I took a deep breath as though I were preparing to dive deeply. "I was born with these eyes, Mooncat eyes they're called back home. I hail from the Isle of Moon and Sun far to the, uh, Southwest, I suppose. And I was in the ocean because Noel and I were taking shelter from a vicious storm that blew in a few days ago."
"Taking shelter in the ocean? Who ever heard of such a stupid idea?" Hiccup's father said with a rumble. It took me a moment to decipher that rumble as a laugh.
Hiccup pulled up a stool and sat down. My attacker followed suit. The only who remained standing was the giant and Velma. "Who is Noel?" Hicup asked softly.
"My dragon. She's a Changewing and was trapped when some rocks fell. She has enough food for a week, but I can't just leave her," I said. There was a shift in the air strong enough I could feel it, not just sense it. They looked at each other. "She's all I have now. My home now lies at the bottom of the sea."

"It takes strength to fly, dear cousin, but it takes grace to float!" ~ Crysanthemum
Titals: Emma the Artistic, Emma the Insane
Age: 15 (almost 16)
Long golden brown hair, tied back into a tight ponytail, with large hazel eyes and long eyelashes. Her skin is tanned, and almost always stained with soot, paint, or gunpowder. Out in public, she wears a pink t-shirt with an armored fur skirt and brown fuzzy boots, and has a surplus of satchels and belt pouches, along with a battered black helmet with curled horns. When working, she wears a leather apron with her hair tied into a bun and a white tunic with leather breeches under it. Has a black tattoo shaped like a celtic knot on her left collar bone.
One part genius, two parts mad scientist, and all artistic curiousity, Emma is nothing if not interesting. When she was little, she had a fascination with how dragons breathed fire, even when they were attacking the village. When her parents were killed in the Red Death attack, it only served to stoke the fires of her inventive mind, leading her to invent near impossible machines so to better defend her home and everyone she holds dear. Unfortunately, Emma is also a bit of a pyromaniac, and has a dangerous attraction to explosives. This causes her Fellow Berkians to give her a wide berth, and ultimately leads her to isolate herself entirely from the village. She wants to be accepted for who she is, and not ridiculed for creative impulsives she cannot always control.
Abilities: Swordsman, scientific genius and stratagist, dragon trainer, always keeps explosives on hand.

My dragons, Peony and Spindleheart!
Breed: Monstrous Nightmare (Southern)
Appearance: Chocolate brown, with Hot-Pink details and a pale pink underbelly. Has a small scar at the end of her tail from Dagur the Deranged's axe.
Was born on the Island of Crete, but escaped when Drago Bludvist took her flock. Eventually made her way to Berk, where she was captured and put in the Academy. Emma was the only one who could get through to her, after one of Hiccup's attempts at training her went wrong. Ever since, the two have been like sisters. She is hot tempered, stubborn, and ferocious, giving her a rotten reputation amoung the villagers, but she also hides a nuturing and over-protective maternal instinct when it comes to her rider and her adoptive "Nephew", Spindle. She and Nina Haddock's Deadly Nadder, Darrien, have a competitive friendship, but she distrusts any other dragon or rider, especialy Stormfly and Astrid. She also has a grudge against Hiccup, but she'll follow his orders when they make sense.
Abilities: Copy-Cat fighting, glowing pink patterns, the usual bursting into flames
Status: Warrior of her small flock
Hiccup attempting to train Peony in the Arena. Peony: "Not happening, Twig Arms..."
(Edit by Sephira)
Name: Spindleheart, though often just Spindle
Breed: Whispering Death
Stormy gray scales, with turquoise spines and a sunset orange underbelly. Wears a set of headgear that resembles goggles.
Was found underneath Berk as an egg, along with two other eggs. Hiccup, knowing Emma had little to no fear of Whispering Deaths, entrusted one of the eggs to her, after much reassurance that she'd take good care of it. Spindle's personality is shy, sweet, and adorably awkward, with little to no social skills. He often has trouble speaking to the other Whispers he was found with, and is deathly afraid of Hiccup's new Whisper, Shredder. Not knowing any other family, he maintains a stubborn belief that Emma is his mother and Peony his aunt (though he can't really say her name right, so he always calls her "Auntie PeeNee"), even as he discovers his past and lineage. Being slightly more sensitive to sunlight than most, Emma made him a pair of tinted goggles so he can fly during the day. He's an overachiever, and always gets depressed at his poor racing skills, but excells at target and shooting games, thank's to Peony's patient training.
Abilities: Spine-Shot, Tail-Whip, Drilling, very good swimmer
Status: Scout of his small flock

This dragon is very proud, strict, ordered, and often acts like a bit of a snob... okay, maybe a lot of a snob. But he's also very willing to learn, and knows how to read and understand several languages. He enjoys watching things be created, and loves the structure of the scientific process. He will sometimes give you a message written in a foreign language and watch intently while ou try to puzzle out the translation.

Cold and emotionless, Deathknight is a sadistic maniac who makes Dagur look like Sigmund Freud. He doesn’t care about anyone or anything except inflicting suffering and sustaining his own existence. He’s become a bit of a boogeyman: a nightmarish creature that stalks the deep forests in winter, toying with it’s prey, then ripping it to shreds or dragging it back to it’s lair to kill slowly and painfully. It’s hard to believe such a vicious dragon could have a shred of honor, but he does. If someone manages to defeat him in battle, Deathknight actually won’t attack that person/dragon again if they venture into his territory, but don’t expect him not to destroy you if you try and take him on a second time…

To Be Continued...
"What do you mean, your home now lies at the bottom of the sea?" asked the woman who tried to attack me.
"Exactly what I said. I am the last Warrior of the Moon and Sun. The others sank with the island. The dragons that were there fled about a week prior, including the approximately thirty Night Furies that were our year round residents," I said straightening slightly.
"Whoa whoa, wait. How many Night Furies? Did one of them go missing about four years ago?" Hiccup asked looking at his dragon. It came forward and sniffed me. A happy look came to its eyes as it did. And then I was practically being mauled with nuzzles. "Toothless! Let the poor girl be, bud!"
"No, no, no, it's okay. I remember him too. Yes there was a Night Fury that went missing, but not four years ago, it went missing over ten years ago. I'd always thought he'd fallen victim to the Red Death who everyone at home knew controlled many of the dragons with death threats," I said matter-of-factly. "The one that went missing I'd nicknamed Nipper, if only because the other furies nipped at him so much that he'd go wild trying to get them to stop. The pleading looks were nothing, it was the mournful keening that really gotcha."
"Mournful keening?" Hiccup's dad asked. "By the way, my name's Stoick the Vast. This is my boy Hiccup, and this is Astrid." He gestured to each in turn.
"Oh! The stories I've been raised on stories that tell horrible things about everyone except for you, Hiccup. They all called you the Ugly Duckling," I said. "Ironically, that story had a different end altogether. It turned out he wasn't a duckling at all, he was a swan! A beautiful, graceful, and aggressive, swan! He sure showed the other ducklings what was what by holding his head proudly high. Bending his head so he could admire his reflection he settled back, constantly bowing, as the other swans did."
Like lightning striking the ground, the urgency over the matter concerning my beloved Noel hit me with enough force that it sent me springing from the bed. Of course since I wasn't fully recovered from my ordeal, I staggered and almost collapsed. A number of hands came out to catch me while another grabbed the back of my shirt, holding me aloft as effortlessly as lifting a feather.
"Steady as she goes?" the voice belonging to, I guess Astrid, asked.
"Steady as she goes," I answered shakily. I got my feet underneath me, gathering strength from the thought of Noel being trapped in a dark hole. I stood on my own two feet, legs trembling slightly from lack of use. "I need a boat. And the general direction of where I was found."
"We could fly you," Hiccup said after exchanging looks with Astrid. "Toothless and I will get you there before you know it."
"Thank you. I really appreciate it," said I earnestly. Worry settled in my stomach like a fireworm, burning hotter than the sun. I walked outside, staggering from the onslaught of light, noise and people. Someone approached me, dragon in tow. I tensed, though I knew I'd be useless in a fight, I prepared for one anyways as I'd been trained.
"There she is," someone whispered in the silence that fell like a tomb. "The girl with the strange eyes."
"Is she a demon?" a kid called out. I pulled out my spectacles and put them on. Any who looked me directly in the eye wouldn't see my eyes, they'd see eyes the color of the sky.
"Let's get you some food," Astrid said once the group had dispursed. "Then Hiccup will take you to get your dragon. Does that sound okay?"
"It sounds fine, but what I really need is some water. Food I've gone without before, water, I always had plentifully," I said.
After a moment someone gave me a flask of water. I took a few sips to get my body used to taking water again. It churned in my stomach uneasily. I waited for a moment for it to settle before taking more. Finally I finished the flask and handed it back.
"Thank you, I really appreciate it," said I to the person who gave me the jug.
Hiccup was already on Toothless and they looked over at me expectantly. I struggled up into the saddle, with the dragon eventually having to crouch so I could get on. He instructed me to hold on tight as we were going to fly with enough speed to make my eyes stream. We took off flying with the wind faster than I'd ever flown before. We came within sight of the pillars of rock; I saw the cave and gasped. It was full of water.
"We don't have much time," I said urgently to Hiccup. "She can hold her breath for an hour and thirty three minutes, but after that, she blacks out. We need to get her out, now."
We landed a moment later. I jumped off Toothless and ran to the mouth of the cave. Taking a deep breath I dove into the water, smothering a four letter word that starts with "F". Hiccup joined me a moment later, seeming to be in a simialr situation. I shook a vial that was hanging at my belt. It started to glow, allowing us to see to the bottom. Noel was lying as though dead at the end of what would have been a savage drop. Her wing and tail that were pinned seemed pitiful from so high up. I swam to the base and lifted the rocks off my dragon. Her eyes popped open and she looked back at me. Seeing it was me she charged, snagging me and Hiccup as she pelted toward the surface.
As we headed for the surface, Hiccup blacked out. We crashed through the surface, shattering it. Landing Noel set down first Hiccup then me. I saw him as limp as a ragdoll. Checking his pulse I found, to my horror, there was none. Instincts took over as I removed his chestplate exposing his shirt underneath. Folding one hand over the other for more strength, I began chest compressions.
"One, two, three," I counted outloud to help myself keep up to speed. "Thirty!" I tilted his head back, lifted his chin, pinched his nostrils and gave him two breaths. I was just turning back to chest compressions when he gasped and sat up.
"What happened? How come my armor is only half on? I don't-" he stopped speaking as a thought occured to him. "I almost went into a beautiful light. Why didn't I go into that light?"
"You almost died, you fool. I took the training everyone on the Isle of Moon and Sun took at the age of ten. There are some things you never forget, and how to save a life is one of them," I said.
"Okay, so why is my chestplate off?" he asked snapping it back on.
"I've done this before, okay? I had to remove it so I could restart your heart. I checked for a pulse at your neck, where I should have been able to find one immediately, and couldn't," I said brushing some rat tail hair out of my face. "Sorry if your ribs are a bit sore, they'll heal." A disturbing popping sound was heard as the ribs popped back into place.
"Ow," he muttered with a groan-yelp. "I'm gonna have to tell my father about this. Really looking forward to this." He got to his feet and went over to Toothless who was frustrated at not being able to get over to him. The dragon jumped on him, pinning him to the ground, and then began licking him, against his protests.
Noel nudged me from behind. I turned to her and hugged her muzzle, happy that she was okay. I checked her tail and wing that had been pinned, and other than a few scratches, there was no damage done. I swung up into the saddle.
"Do you have anywhere else to go?" Hiccup asked as we took off.
"No. Like I said, my homeland sank to the bottom of the ocean. No one survived, except those who flew off on their dragons," I said. "My parents died when I was five. Smallpox, a vicious disease that will kill if you begin coughing up blood."
We flew in silence for a few moments. Noel and I began doing simple aerial acrobatics to get used to the feel of them and test how much they hurt her wing and tail. She whined when some sea water splashed onto her exposed wounds, but otherwise, she performed beautifully. She disappeared beneath me like she usually did when she was happy.
After two hours in the air, with Noel and I impressing Hiccup by showing off our exceptional air show tricks, we all landed in Berk. Noel balked at the sudden overwhelming crowd that swarmed us. She reared her head, about to strike. I jumped off her and held my hands up, our signal for "stop".
She settled down, though was in no way calm. Stoick pushed his way through the crowd, but stopped when Noel hissed at him, uttering a feline rrrowrrr.
"What is that thing doing on may island?" he demanded.
"Uh, Dad, this is Noel. She's completely tame, and saved my life. She's also bonded to Evangeline," he said this last part slightly quieter pointing with his eyes and head at me.
"Is that so? Well, we'll see just how tame she really is, won't we? Son, I want you to tame her yourself," his father said.
He cringed. Glancing over his shoulder at me and Noel, who seemed about ready to bolt, his shoulders sagged in surrender. Turning he approached Noel, speaking softly.
"Allow me," I said. I stepped forward and turned toward my dragon. She dipped her head, knowing what was coming. I took Hiccup's left hand, and placed it so that it was a few inches above my dragon's nose. She growled in her throat, meeting his eyes. "Don't look her in the eyes, they see that as a threat," I translated.
Taking a deep breath, Hiccup lowered his eyes, staring at his father's feet. After a moment's hesitation, Noel closed her eyes, touching her nose to his hand. He sighed.
Turning to me, he said, "How did you know what she was saying?"
"I'm a warrior of the Isle of Moon and Sun. Everyone from there can at least somewhat understand what each dragon is saying," I said. "For example, Toothless is wondering why you've still got your hand on, loosely translated, Not-Me's nose." Chuckling I watched as he removed his hand from her nostrils. My stomach screamed its protests at not having anything in it in the silence that followed. I jumped, looking down at my gut before collapsing with laughter. Toothless rumbled out a curse as he sniffed Hiccup's hand again.
"Translation?" he asked looking at me.
"I'm not translating that, it was very rude," I said sitting up and wiping my eyes.
I like the idea of someone being able to talk to a dragon. (I'm kinda trying to do that myself in my own fan fiction) The end of that post is really hilarious!!!!!
After getting a square meal into my stomach, and some fish for Noel, she and I wandered about Berk exploring the village. We stopped by what looked like a blacksmith's shop, and peered around. Nothing peaked our interest so we set off for the forest. I knew that I would never be truly accepted on account of my strange eyes, but I could be tolerated if they learned I lived in a tree, right? Nothing unusual about that, their houses are made of dead trees, my old house was made of a living tree.
"Okay, Noel, let me know if you see a tree with potential. Look at that one! Maybe? I'm thinking possibly," I said going up to a very large trunk and placing a hand on it. "Greetings, Ancient One. How fairs the weather? And the soil, what do the earthworms say?"
There was a delay in the tree responding as he wasn't expecting someone to come up to him just to talk.
"Uh...The weather is fine, though there is a terrible winter storm coming in just a few days. I predict that it will bury the village, and maybe teach them to understand what Ellena has been screaming at them. To what do I owe the pleasure, oh child of the Cosmos?" he, and I assumed it was a he because the voice was quite barritone.
"Ah," I said sitting on the grass with a hand still on an exposed root. "I shall tell the village, though I doubt they'll listen. I've got Mooncat eyes and apparently that is very rare here. From what I've been able to see, everyone has either brown eyes, green eyes, grey eyes, or blue. Everyone here seems a bit dull when it comes to understanding the things that the Great Mother placed here. A shame because they're missing a great deal of information."
"Hm..." he said. "I have something to show you. Let your mind go blank, as you were trained. Just like that, good. Now, watch."
I saw a young dragon and a young boy about the same age, facing off in the same clearing I now sat in. The lad raised a knife above his head preparing to kill the trapped creature before him. I gasped as I recognized Toothless. A few tense moments passed before the youngster, who I now realized was Hiccup as a teenager, dropped the knife, sliding a hand down his face. He looked at the knife, then at the ropes that bound the beast before him.
"I did this," I heard him say softly before turning away. "I have to do what's right. No creature of such dignity deserves this fate." Hiccup turned back toward the dragon that was to become Toothless. Using his little pencilsticker, he cut through the ropes that bound his quarry. As soon as he was unleashed, Toothless pounced on him, pinning him against a rock.
I bit back a laugh as Toothless screamed at him,"That hurt you ignorant buffoon! No wonder you're not accepted. Your mercy will not go unrewarded, however. I am reflecting the same action by only yelling at you and hoping you understand. Don't do it again!"
The vision ended as suddenly as it began. I heard a voice calling for me, someone snapped their fingers beside my ear. My vision came back into focus and I saw Astrid crouched before me.
Upon registering the conscious act of blinking, I sat up and stared at Astrid for the span of a few moments.
"Uh," I said shifting my gaze to the trees just over her right shoulder. "Sorry, what did you say?"
"I was asking if you were feeling well enough to pick a house," she said rather impatiently. "Ugh, get it together, girl! We have tonnes of empty houses just waiting for someone to occupy them. So are you gonna come pick one out or not?"
"Uh sure. I won't be living there much, but I suppose it'd be good for an experimental area. Are there any that are seperate from the town?" I asked.
Her face changed from frustrated to annoyed and confused. "Huh?" she asked.
"At home we lived in trees. We would, I guess, ask the tree to change, and if it wanted to, we would have an extra room, or, in our case, a place for a dragon to take up residence," I said indicating Noel who now sat up and eyed Astrid warily. I sighed. "Never mind. Just show me the places, please."
She lead the way back to town. I wasn't too far outside of town, so I assumed someone may have heard my conversation with her. When we got back to town surprise flickered on my face when I realized everyone was too busy to notice myself, Astrid, and my dragon coming from the forest.
"By the way, you might want to warn the chief that there's gonna be a bad storm in a few days," I declared. She stopped.
"How do you know?" she questioned upon turning. "Do you practice witchcraft? Because it's highly frowned on around these parts."
"No, I asked the trees. Like I did at home when I bonded with Noel," I replied smoothly. I had anticipated the possibility of doubt and formulated a response automatically. "And there's one that's just at the edge of town that's been screaming about said storm. It's gonna be bad when it hits, probably burying Berk up to it's knickers. Skippy's I guess here."
"Uhh...okay then. You're just getting weirder and weirder," she froze. "You said you're a warrior?"
"Yes, the last Warrior of the Isle of Moon and Sun. Why? Do you guys disapprove of that too?" I inquired with a raised eyebrow.
"Stoick! Hiccup! Anybody!" she hollered tearing down the street on a dirty hare.
"Oh boy. Here comes trouble," I muttered running after her. I caught up to her just as she reached Stoick.
"You...are never...gonna believe..." she puffed out, "what she said...just now. She can talk to trees and is claiming there's this huge storm that's coming in three days time that will likely bury Berk."
"Then maybe we should begin preparing, just in case," Hiccup cut in upon arrival. "I've heard of someone with a name similar to hers from the South with the same eyes, and talents, as they call them. They're called Pure Ones, said to come from the gods themselves. If she says there's a storm, then by Odin there'll be a storm. You know we don't have an early warning system anymore, Dad."
The chief fell silent for a few minutes. "Where did you hear of this and what else did you learn?" he probbed.
"I gave Trader Johan something in exchange for a book of the far off distant lands that I hope to explore someday. It was the third chapter in, I believe," replied he.
A couple days later, I'd settled my lab in a house that was a healthy thirty feet from the outskirts of town, and was just putting the final touches on my treehouse when I heard someone approach. I checked myself over before readjusting my glasses to confirm they were on good and tight. Leaning out, grabbing a branch to steady myself, I saw Hiccup standing at the foot of the tree with Toothless staring up into the leaves that made up my roof.
"So, when's the storm coming and how long is it going to last?" he called after greeting me. "Because this weather is saying that there won't be a storm for a long time. Besides, we have regular winter and devastating winter, and the lesser of the two is a month away."
"Actually, the trees say that this storm is coming tonight, and for everyone to prepare for a blinding blizzard which will snow us all in. I've experienced worse storms when I was a young child," I said.
"Okay then. I think I'm about to join everyone's opinion of you're crazy. There isn't gong to be a storm for another month!" he yelled.
"We'll see tonight, won't we? Best get ready, just in case, right?" I asked sweetly. I pulled myself back into the treetops and leaned a fairly hefty board against the opening. The tree grasped it with about twenty branches that were very full of leaves. That fully and snuggly in place, I turned my attention to the other openings, humming and singing to pass the time. The window over my sink I put a largish flat rock against, and my house secured it. "How long will the storm last, dear friend?"
"Only overnight. Why not read a book by candle light, or tell me a story? It'll help pass the time," he suggested.
I sat down in my armchair.
"I guess she was right," I murmured as Toothless and I flew over Berk on a patrol. Storm clouds gathered ominously in the distance to the South. Their length could not be gauged nor could their girth. I knew I had to warn the village. We landed a few minutes later and found my father helping someone fix their fence post. "Dad, Evangeline was right. Stormclouds, due South. There's gonna be a big storm. She said to prepare for a blinding blizzard that will snow us all in."
"Are you sure, son?" he asked me straightening and turning simultaneously.
"Positive. Toothless and I saw them gathering on the horizon, but if this wind keeps up, it'll reach us by the time the sun has set. I don't know how long it's gonna last," I said. "But we need to prepare for this thing now."
"Alright, gather the others. You and the other trainers will store food for this thing. I'll join you as soon as I finish with this blasted thing," he said giving the fence post a vicious kick.
That evening, snow began to fall. Evangeline still hadn't arrived with Noel so I told Astrid I was going to bring her and her dragon to the Great Hall. She gave me a weird look.
"Don't worry, babe. Nothing fishy going on," I said giving her a kiss on the cheek before dashing off with Toothless hot on my heel. "Oh sweet Thor! This crazy weather's as cold as a troll's backside! Evangeline!"
I had reached the foot of the tree that she'd chosen to be her home for some strange reason. The wind picked up, blowing snow into my eyes. Toothless made a sound somewhere between a whine and a yelp. I looked at him as best I could and saw him closing his eyes and rubbing them. Suddenly the sound of a sharp crack reached my ears over the wind.
"Don't just stand there, fool. You and Toothless get in here before you freeze your fannies off!" Evangeline laughed. I reached for the tree with Toothless right beside me. The ground shot up under our feet, bringing us up level with her doorway.
Toothless and I stepped out of the storm into a rather cozy home that was a lot bigger on the inside than it looked on the outside. A large fire roared gleefully in a hearth. She replaced the wood slab that made for the door. Leaves covered it almost instantly. My dragon perked up when he saw the fire and the hot rock in front of it. He went over to it, sniffed it, and curled up on it.
Dude, I do that in my own fan fic "Diary of a dragon rider" only I have a special bracelet made of peridot (or sky emerald as the dragons call it) that lets me understand dragon thoughts.

Hiccup stood in the entrance to the large house in the tree, staring awestruck at the intricacy of the room he was in. Tootless' tail brushed his calf, startling him from his daze. Evangeline was tending a pot of, he took a deep breath through the nose. She was cooking with chocolate! She went over to the cabinet and took out two mugs. She filled one for each of them and handed one to him. They went and sat down in a pair of chairs that were positioned a respectful distance from the fire, allowing most of the heat to bathe Toothless. Noel was curled up in the rafters, keeping a watchful eye on the two humans and Night Fury.
"Careful, it's hot," she said as she blew on her cup to cool it slightly before taking a sip.
He followed her example, savoring the creamy, rich flavor that coated his tongue and throat with mouthwateringly chocolatey goodness. He didn't blow on it again before taking a mouthful, therefore burning his mouth.
"Odin's beard!" he cursed jumping up, spilling some of the hot beverage over his hand. "Ouch!"
"Here, let me help," she told him taking the mug from his hand and setting it on the side table. She brought a cool damp towel and a cup of cool yak milk. "I did tell you to be careful. I just took the hot chocolate off the fire."
"You can say that again," he grumbled, mopping the liquid from his person before wrapping his hand in the towel. "Why aren't you in the Great Hall with everyone else? This storm could go on for days!"
"Well I have a very reliable source that tells me this storm will blow itself out by morning. And why would I want to be cramped in a room with a bunch of strangers when I could be in my own home with a good book, hot chocolate, and a nice fire in the fireplace?" she asked indicating her small piece of Heaven-on-Earth.
"Fair point," he replied slowly. "What books do you have?"
"Oh just a few favorites I picked up along my journey, many of the histories that I know of places I've been, and a couple of my own creation," she said gesturing to the bookshelf that made one wall. An unearthly howl from above made everyone in the room look up, tensed. After a few seconds the tree relayed that the wind had passed over an old squirrel's nest causing the noise.
In the morning, as promised, the blizzard blew itself out. When the wooden slab was removed from the doorway, warm sunlight poured in like golden honey. Noel and I took off out the door, followed closely by Hiccup and Toothless. We flew around the island a couple of times, myself and my dragon fazing in and out of invisibility earning a few startled looks from the other rider-dragon pair when they couldn't see us. We landed next to the Great Hall and knocked.
Stoick opened the door. "Well, looks like you two finally decided to join us," he rumbled. "Come on in, out of the cold."
"Uh, Dad? The storm's over," Hiccup said sticking a thumb over his shoulder. "We were just out flying for a bit. And something really weird I learned, Evangeline and Noel can both turn invisible. Noel I can understand, but her rider?"
"It's the cloak I wear. It's invisible to the naked eye, but when Noel fazes, so do I," I said. "And if you'd asked about the duration of the storm, I would have told you it was only overnight."
"You'd better not have tried anything with my man," Astrid snarled coming up behind the chief. "Because if you did, you are so dead. I don't care where you come from, Hiccup is my man."
"Relax, I wouldn't dream of it. I can never marry anyways," I said. "As a Warrior of the Isle of Moon and Sun, I am practically immortal. I've died no less than one hundred thirty three times. Sadly, there is a way to kill me permenantly. When I die, I turn to ashes. There's a flower that always appears after the ashes scatter, it glows and contains a life lesson, meant only for me. If you burn that flower, I can never come back to life."
"Well that was a rahther blust'ry bit uh weatheh, don't you think?" asked a voice I was familiar with.
"Johan?" I said pushing through the crowd. Sure enough, there he was, sitting with his beanie hat, bushy black beard, slightly tanned skin, and travel slacks, at a table. "It's been a while, agreed? So you followed your dream and became a trader I see?"
"I guess I did, Miss. Wait, Evangeline?!" he cried leaping to his feet. We embraced, for we had each thought the other dead. "It's been a fair while my dear li'l sister. What brings you to Berk? How are Mum and Dad?"
"Um...About that. Everyone from home sank with the island," his face fell into a mask of horror. "I'm sorry you found out this way, but my sensei sent me off to fly around the island for a fairly long time, all night in fact, and in the morning, the only thing that remained of the island was the tip of the mountain in the middle. It happened so quickly no one had time to react. If you hadn't gone off when you did, you'd have sank with it."
"So-so, that's what brings you to Berk, but how are Mum and Dad?" he asked still not cluing in.
I sighed. "They're fine, Johan. They're dead. They're in the afterlife sipping coconut milk, enjoying deep sea bass, and laying out on a long sprawl of beach," I said meeting his eyes. "It was three months ago, and I didn't know how to reach you. Sensei told me to find a place called Berk far to the North-East, so I followed his instructions. We never would have made it if not for Hiccup finding me."
After thirty minutes, or half an hour, of talking to my brother, he grew silent as he listened to my tale of flying from the place he and I knew from childhood. I was younger by a year, but my parents decided to separate when we were just youngsters. Dad took Johan, while Mom took me. We moved in with my grandparents, my mother's parents, and stayed with them for ten years. When Johan decided to up and leave in the dead of night to train to be a trader, my father blamed my mother and they began a screaming fest that ended with a dagger, a sword, and a bludgeon. The sun rose and I went downstairs for breakfast, stopping dead in my tracks when I found my mother, father, grandfather, and grandmother, dead in a pool of blood. I ran screaming from the house, certain that someone had killed them and then come searching for me. There were footprints on the stairs that lead to this assumption, and I feared for my life, tearing out of the house in a shirt and underwear. Fortunately, my shirt was long enough that it could have been considered a dress.
"So, what you're telling me, is that our parents killed each other, and took Gram and Papa Maelstrum, with them? That sounds absolutely preposterous! You're making it up," Johan said to me jostling me playfully like we'd done when we were kids. I looked up from my clasped hands, which were on the table in front of me, and met his hopeful eyes, knowing with a sinking heart, that he would cry when he realized that our parents were dead. "Why did you lie to everyone here on Berk?"
"I didn't know how they would react, and I was afraid they'd judge me. I wanted to make sure I spoke to you about our parents first. I needed to say something that would get some sort of proverbial shelter," I said. "Look at my eyes-" I took off my glasses to remind him of the oddity my true eyes were. "-they're Mooncat eyes. No one here on Berk has them. They said I was a banshee when I came to. I had to use something as a shield."
"Okay, start from the beginning. How did you find your way to Berk?" he demanded.
"The night the island sank, two days after I became an official Warrior," here his eyebrows shot up then back down, "don't look at me like that, I had a dream and I followed it. Anyways, my Sensei told me to get on Noel and fly around the island until the sun rose, It would have been a good ten hours, so we started right away. She and I were used to long flights and he assigned us lengthy flights regularly, from herding stray sheep, to practicing using our waterbombs, to just leisure flights, we'd go for hours at a time. I remember hearing a strange noise, not unlike a submerging whale, around midnight, so about half way through the flight. At daybreak, I looked down and saw nothing but ocean. I looked around, thinking I had somehow flown away from the island, but saw only the tip of Mount Lelani. I couldn't even see her younger sister, Nina. Sensei had given me a letter and told me not to read it until dawn. When I opened it, it read 'Find Berk. It is far to the North-East. Give this letter to the chief, or tell them who you are. You have done well, grasshopper. You are my star student. Wear the sash with pride, for you have done your family great honor by becoming the greatest Warrior the Isle of Moon and Sun has seen since the very first: a young man by the name of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock I.'" Someone spat out a mouthful of drink and began coughing as a little of the liquid went into their lungs.
"Wait a minute," Stoick said coming up to our table. "You mean to tell me that my son was named after a Warrior of the Isle of Moon and Sun? I always thought he was the greatest Viking who ever lived."
"Well he was, until he took the Pledge. The Warrior's Pledge states that the speaker will uphold the balance of truth and justice, as evil and lies always try to win. They will preserve life, no matter the cost to them, for the greater good. We study the stars, speak to and understand all things in nature, which is why I can understand dragons and trees so well. When he became a Warrior, Hiccup the Viking, your ancestor, Hiccup, became Hiccup the Warrior. Here's the catch: once you become a Warrior of the Isle of Moon and Sun, you are stripped of all the fancy-schmancy titles you accumulated. You are essentially naked. The blast of power could kill you, and if that doesn't you must rest under the light of the full moon for the Universe to grant you precious powers unique only to you. The more one-of-a-kind you are, the more powerful you become," I said in explanation. "It's a tremendous honor to be named after someone who started the greatest fight in the history of the world. I was named after his, believe it or not, wife." The entire hall cried out in surprise. "Don't worry, don't worry. The only feelings I have toward him are gratitude for saving my dragon's life as well as my own."
Astrid came up behind me, glaring suspiciously. Johan noticed this and came to my side, in case things got ugly. I'd learned to fight, and was savage in hand-to-hand competition. If I wanted Hiccup for my own, I would have had him is a heartbeat. I didn't tell anyone that, of course. No need to stir up unnecessary trouble. I hadn't as yet, determined the extent of Astrid's ability in my field of mastery, and therefore didn't want to over extend myself or harm her in any way. I turned to her after a moment of quiet contemplation.
"Can I help you?" I asked. Noel migrated over to where I was and sat down beside me. She was still invisible, as she'd fazed upon arriving at the Great Hall.
"Just keep a respectable distance," was all she said after coldly staring at me for a few minutes. "We here on Berk don't take kindly to strangers who pose a potential threat to any of us. Keep that in mind when you try anything suspicious."
"Duly noted. Besides, I'm not interested in anyone," I said looking away from her and instead exchanging sad looks with my dragon who instantly became visible again. I murmured sadly, "Not anymore."
"Huh?" she said.
"I'd rather not talk about it, thanks. It's kind of a touchy subject," I replied. I played with my necklace, upon which sat a beautiful diamond ring. I was but twenty years of age, and already had been engaged, but lost him to a terrible accident. It traumatized me into vowing to remain alone, never marrying, never letting anyone get that close again.
That evening, after the streets had been cleared out. I was walking to my house, with Astrid and Hiccup walking with me. Astrid turned to me and inquired about my avoidance of the implied question.
I sighed, knowing that she wouldn't leave it be until I answered. "His name was Randalf Tscheckovski. We were engaged. He was my everything, my soulmate. If not for Noel, I would have given up long ago. Three days before we were to be married, he dropped me off from a romantic date, which he often took me on. He got back into the carriage, which is sort of like a fancy cart for carrying people instead of produce, and gave the order to head out. Two seconds later, as I turned toward the door, I heard an explosion and whipped around. Nothing was left of the wagon save the wheels and the horses, which were so badly wounded they had to be put down. I screamed, and if not for my Sensei and his wife, I would have run into the fire, trying to get to him. I never saw him again," said I wiping at the tears that shamefully streamed down my face. "I miss him so much. It's been over five years since That Day, and all that dragon dung about time making it easier, it's just not true. You never forget losing someone you cherish, especially not in that way. We never even got to say goodbye."
I heard them stop, but I kept going, and broke into a run. I had to get away from anyone, and away from everyone. I felt Noel pick me up in her front legs and take to the skies, flying swiftly to the treehouse. I sat down on my bed holding a painting he and I had commissioned a week after he and I began dating. It had been an arranged marriage, but we both felt that it was as if it were meant to be. It depicted myself sitting in a very large, fancy gown. The queen had been my Sensei's wife's very dear friend and loaned the dress to her so I could wear it instead of my simple, everyday dress that came to my shins. My hair was done up in a very beautiful top knot bun. I followed the gilded sash that he bore across his chest up to his chin and stopped. I knew what was coming: I would see his face again, and break down in hysterics. Noel had held me twice already and she feared, though never mentioned, that my third would result in a successful suicide. I turned toward the door after I scrubbed my face with my now damp blanket. I had heard the whisper of wings through wind and questioned the tree about it.
"There is a two-headed dragon, green in color, with only one rider. It's heading this way," he said. "Oh I see what I did there."
"Haha, very funny," said I. "Dragon humor."
"Hey Dad," I said as I came through the door, with Toothless not too far behind me.
"Evening, son," he greeted me. I sat down with a sigh. "Alright, I know that sound. Out with it, what's on your mind?"
"Well, I don't know where to begin. Evangeline just told Astrid and I a pretty sad story," I said. I looked up and met his eyes. I knew what he wanted, an explanation. "She was engaged to someone and three days before they were to become husband and wife, he died from an explosion. They never got to say goodbye. I don't know what to say, or do. What do you think I should do?"
"Hm.... How did Astrid react?" Dad asked me.
"She was as stunned as I am," I replied. "After we watched her run back to her tree house, I walked Astrid home then came back here."
He fell silent for a long time. I knew what he was thinking. He was remembering the night my mother was carried off by dragons. He'd never had the chance to say goodbye either. I wondered, however, if my father ever cried over her loss. Probably not, but still; the distant gaze he now bore as he stirred supper seemed to suggest almost a sense of longing for something that once was. Finally he shook himself as though coming out of a dream.
"Supper's ready," he chimed cheerily, earlier brooding mood gone. He dished out a couple bowls of delicious stew. I gave Toothless a salmon, and he spat some of it back up into my lap.
"As usual, I'm good, Bud. You can have the rest of it," he looked at me then took it from my lap with a final glance before tipping his head back and eagerly gulping the slippery creature down. I scratched him on the top of his head prior to giving the stew before me my undivided attention. Across from me Dad had already eaten half of his enormous portion and noticed me barely nibbling on mine. He cleared his throat bringing me back to the present. I wolfed down the soup, savoring the wild garlic, Icelandic cod, and, I checked again, carrots! "What's the occasion tonight, Dad?" He looked at me funny. "Why the carrots? We never have carrots for supper unless it's a special occasion."
"So?" he asked between mouthfuls.
"So, what's the occasion?" I repeated.
He avoided my gaze, focusing on his three-quarter empty dish. "No occasion, just someone from the village grew some carrots and gave me a few. That's all."
"Uh huh," said I doubtfully. He peeked at me from under his helmet, knowing I didn't believe him. "Sure. Whatever you say, Dad. You're the chief."
"You will be someday, too," he murmured quietly. I don't think I was supposed to hear it, but I did and choked on a spoonful of supper. I coughed the obstruction clear of my airway and resumed eating as if nothing had happened. Beside me, my best friend looked up at me with concern, purring in his usual way.
"So, how was work today?" I inquired, hoping to change the subject. It worked.
"It went alright, I guess. A few complaints about me letting Evangeline, or as they called her 'the Banshee', stay on Berk, but other than that it was pretty good. I helped Bucket and Mulch sure up a couple fence posts, patched a few holes in their boat, and then had to introduce a new baby girl into our tribe," he said as he scraped his bowl clean. I knew what was coming next. He would ask me, as he always did, what my day had been like, and I would respond. He wouldn't really pay much attention unless I said I found a new species or something of the like. Unfortunately, that day I'd discovered an entire new island. He finished scraping and began the nightly ritual. "So how was your day, son?"
"Oh it was pretty good. Toothless and I found a new island a few hours Northeast of here. We decided to call it Dirty Chin. We couldn't think of anything better and Toothless was cleaning his chin," I said as I scooped another mouthful of food into my stomach. "Anyways, it had a ton of new plants and animals, like a herd of boar the size of a Gronkle." I knew it would grab his attention in an instant. He whipped around from tending the fire. "There were also elk, and caribou, big ones. And what are you doing, Dad?"
He picked up his hammer, grabbed Skullcrusher's saddle from it's peg and dashed outside. I followed, abandoning my soup in my haste. I heard my dragon slurp it down before chasing me.
"Show me where this island is," Dad said jumping on his dragon.
"Dad, we can't go there at night! It's too dark, we don't know what kind of predators are there, and it's kinda hard to find on a full stomach," I returned. I noticed him blink a bit as he fought back a yawn. It was in vain, however, and then the deep breath contorted his face in a rather terrifying manner. I hid one myself behind a hand.
"Alright, in the morning then," he finally said once he'd wrestled his face into submission. "Sleep well, son. I-I love... Well goodnight." He patted me on the shoulder before heading inside. I knew he had a hard time saying he loved me, even though I knew he did. It showed through his eyes, and his actions. Knowing I love carrots, he'd added them to the stew tonight just to show he cared. I exchanged glances with Skullcrusher and Toothless before heading back inside. "By the way, Hiccup. Did you really need to lick your bowl clean?"
I laughed as I cleaned my supper dish of the Night Fury spit that now coated it. "Toothless cleaned it for me. Anyways, goodnight, Dad. See you in the morning. I love you," I said as I headed up the stairs. He grabbed me about the waist and hugged me, causing my back to crack in an alarmingly loud manner.
"I love you too, son," he murmured into my ear. The first time he'd said it in a long time. It made me shiver slightly. I wiggled my arms free and returned his bone-crushing embrace. He set me back on the staircase and I headed upstairs. Toothless climbed onto his bed, using his plasma stream to warm it slightly, and laid down. His breathing slowed down into it's usual sleeping pattern. Listening to him sleeping, I soon followed.
