Flightingale the Steaming Stormswallower

Backstory: Flightingale never used to be a dragon. She used to be a farmer's slave, beaten, bruised, toiling away in the heat of midday. One night, she was standing by her window looking out at the moonlit mountains, when she heard a small scratching in her tiny room. She turned to see and sitting on her bed, looking quite pleased with itself, was a baby Stormswallow. Of course she was frightened, but it soon became apparent that it wouldn't hurt her. It leapt down to the floor and ran to the window, glancing from her to the window and back. She opened the window for it but it just stood there, looking at her sadly. She realised it couldn't fly, and in sympathy she picked it up, crept down stairs and quietly let herself out. Putting the dragon down she said; 'go on, young one, be free like I wish I could be.' It  started to scamper off but then it stopped and turned back. She waved it off and began to make her way back to the house, then pain blossomed in her shoulder. The young dragon had scratched her.  but it wasn't a bad pain, it spread through her like fire, kindling a dragons spark in her. That night Flightingale flew free as a dragon.

Ka Ledasio, the skradder, by the amazing Speedyleaf.

Backstory: She is the mysterious leader of the mysterious Whitetalons, a group of dragons who all have the middle claw of their right foot white. She is feared among people, respected among dragons. Like a shadow upon a shadow she soars through the night, like a phantom of fleetness she swoops through the day. Any who meet her bow to get regalness, her strong will, her quick, clever eyes. Like a ghost of a story she flits on the edge of memory, always there, somewhere, yet just out of reach like a dream. She saw Flightingale's first flight, the young Stormswallower grow, Gabryall's loneliness broken. She was there for them all, leading in dreams, thoughts, small whispered words in their ears. Is she real? Or is she just a fantasy? Flying at the edge of minds. Maybe you will meet her, maybe you won't, who know but her and Whitetalons. Maybe, just maybe, she is with you now.

Oops, sorry, let me try again.

Hi!!! (Oh, much better)

I'm the Dragoness (or Ness, if you prefer. I'm not picky).

First thing you should know about me: I am forever and always a

Second thing you should know about me:

Also, thanks to Dragonriders Fury for indulging my Night Fury obsession with an incredible banner! It's awesome!

Hmmm what else...I love playing/composing music, drawing, and writing...if you can't find me I'm probably messing around with Shadow or in detention with Keefe...yup, that’s about it.

The Dragoness Backstory: Fanfiction

Unfortunately, these update sporadically. I do what I can with the time I have *shrug* I'll mark them finished when they're done...if that ever happens :P

My vikings belong to the clan The Wildborn. However, since I'm not planning on being particularly active in-game anymore, if anyone would like to assume command of my little clan, just contact me on any of the threads I comment on (NO pms, sorry) and I'll get you set up! :D

(I LOVE this banner. Thanks, EmeraldHuntress!)

(This one was made by The Bohemian Critic--thank you, it's so beautiful!)

(Again by EmeraldHuntress. What, I loved them both!)

Ordered by preference, of course

(used to be top ten, but I have too many things that I love!)

HTTYD books/movies

(obviously, but I HAD to put that in there, it really is my favorite)

The books were SO GOOD. No swearing, no (extreme) violence (does getting eaten by a lava dragon that dives into a volcano count? Or Grimbeard the Ghastly killing his own son?) Okay, scratch the violence, but it really is pretty awesome. The characters are SO well put together, each with his or her own little quirks that make them unique, and they’re all (mostly) lovable in their own way (Alvin and Exellinor are irredeemable). The little lessons Cressida Cowell teach by inserting them into the plot are truly inspired. Can’t wait for her to write more!!! (Also, I love the quirky way she capitalizes random words to make them a little bit more important. It’s just funny to me.)

I'll leave off mentioning all the characters of the movies, because you guys know them all aready! But you may not know the Heroes who came first...

First (of course), Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

Rather a longish name for a smallish Viking. Hiccup is a member of the Hairy Hooligan tribe. He has bright red hair and about a million freckles. the series starts when he's ten-and-a-half, and progresses until he is fifteen and King of the Wilderwest. His best (and, for a few books, ONLY friend) is Fishlegs.

Fishlegs is scrawny, allergic to reptiles, pretty much scared of everything, and the only sane one of the group (well, the only sane one when Hiccup is making a Plan). But he's fiercely loyal to Hiccup, and a good deal stronger and braver than he thinks.

Next is Camicazi, who's a little too brave and fierce.

She's a Bog-Burglar, a member of an all-girls tribe of people who, well, burgle things. She is a very accomplished thief and a master escape artist.

Second in the fandom world is--you guessed it--Narnia. I have loved this world since before even HTTYD, I think. Though I'm not quite ready to meet Alsan, I would love to slip through the wardrobe for a few days--or years.

The False Prince

So the story is set in a medieval world in the land of Carthya. It's about an orphan named Sage. The storyline is great, the main character (Sage) is very well-rounded, believeable, and goes through some great character growth (not to mention he's snarky and smart and super funny). I LOVED it, and it's seriously amazing. If you read it, you will NOT be disappointed! (P.S. If you're one of those people who likes to read the end first, don't. Trust me, it's worth it to wait)

The Silver Eye

This is an INCREDIBLE webcomic by one Laura Hollingsworth (also the only webcomic/comic I have ever read, BUT STILL). The world is beautiful, the characters are funny and awesome (Apen and Joe are my favorites), and the art is incredible! It uploads a page EVERY FRIDAY and the story is so good!

Keeper of the Lost Cities

"Team Foster-Keefe will always be cooler."--Keefe

Yup, couldn’t have said it better myself. Team Foster-Keefe all the way! Though could Legacy pleasepleasePLEASE be about the actually storyline and not JUST Fitzphie and matchmaking and stuff that doesn’t matter to the rest of the elven world?

(Also--psst! Any Keeper fans who have read Legacy, PLEASE TELL ME EVERYTHING!!! I NEED TO KNOOOWWW!!)

The Magic Thief/The Lost Books/Sarah Prineas in general

I LOVE this series, it ended far too quickly for me (maybe cause I read it all in one day, hmmmmm). Connwaer and the magic and all of it are just so HILARIOUS and EXHILIRATING and FRUSTRATING to read about and STOP BLOWING THINGS UP, CONNWAER!!!

The Lost Books: MORE! MORE! I NEED MORE! (Seriously, when does the next book come out?)

Anyway, it’s about Alex, a librarian, and Kenneret, a queen, and her brother Charlie. Oh, and the books are alive (that’s enough to make any bookworm hyperventilate with happiness, isn’t it? ;D )

Attention to all the dragon-touched: This is a must-read. Go. Read it.

...and birds. And wicked-looking staffs. And cute little blondies called Beastie.

Wasn't a fan of her outfit for like 90% of Maleficent 2 but the rest of it was great! Better than a certain movie I could mention *cough*TheHiddenWorld*cough*.

Wizards of Once

Dwight in Shining Armor

I get a kick out of this every time I hear Dwight's shriek in the intro. BYUTv is the best!...at making things funny, clean, and SUPER awkward. But it's still great.

Brotherband Chronicles/Ranger's Apprentice

Story Thieves

My favorites are actually Kiel and Owen. No girls this time around, which is really unusual for me. But these two are special. Hope they have all the adventures they can imagine...and maybe a few safer ones.

The Ever Afters (EAS)

This series is pretty good. Aurora--excuse me, RORY Landon is so gutsy and flawed and lovable and I love her.

Half Upon a Time

Not James Riley's finest works but still pretty good.

Brave (Merida)

Just gotta say, I LOVE this girl. Best Disney princess ever.

Pete's Dragon

Best song ever

The Map to Everywhere

One word: Unrealities.

Three more words: Future Dragoness fanfiction.

If you reached the end of this fandom section, and you haven't read some of the books, you might have noticed some spoilers. I am an avid lover of spoilers and all insider knowledge, so....sorry for ruining it, I guess? But at the same time....NOT! XD please don't hurt me...

Chapter One - Quest

Part One

This first part is going to be snapshots of Grimmel's life. Some chapters will follow on from others, some will skip to a few weeks, months and even years ahead.

The silver light was bright in his pale eyes, the white disc hanging in the clear, starry sky like a coin. White scales rippled over his pale skin as he prepared to Shift, the pull of the full moon so strong now that he could hardly contain his dragon side.
With a glance behind, where his tribe was asleep, he waded into the sea, feeling the sandy shore beneath his bare feet give way to rock. He swam far out into the ocean, the currents nor the cold bothering him. When he judged that the water was deep enough he Shifted, the massive form of a Bewilderbeast taking the place of the skinny human.
Grimmel swam quickly under the water, powerful legs pushing him forwards and fin-wings steering. He had a clear idea of his direction, his sharp hearing picking up the faint calling he was looking for. In what seemed like no time he was hauling himself onto a black pebbled beach, the weight of his dragon form making his feet sink deep into the gravel.
'You're here,' came a deep rumbling from the mist obscured mountain in the middle of the island. 'I have been calling you for a long time.'
'I came as fast as I could,'
he growled. 'Humans are slow to travel with.'
His words were met with silence as a tall woman clambered out of a tunnel, her grey hair a tangled mess. She walked towards him with an unsteady gait, her shoulders hunched and arms low as if she was used to walking on all fours. With a sudden shift in the air her form shimmered, changing to a huge grey-blue beast almost as big as himself.
'Just an excuse,' she snarled. 'But now that you're here, I have a task for you.'
Grimmel stood taller, ready to accept his challenge.
'A dragon has defied my rule. A Night Fury. Hunt him and his kind down until there are no more of them to renegade against me. Those disloyal lizards have already crossed me twice, and it cannot happen again. Understand?'
    'Yes, mother,'
he bowed his head, eyes lowered in respect to the Queen. 'But how will I find a dragon that can fly when I myself cannot?'
The Queen pulled her lips back in what was supposed to be a smile. 'I have thought of that.' With a commanding click she summoned six insectlike dragons, their red and black scales shining in the moonlight. 'Take them,' she said as they landed on the gravel. 'Deathgrippers are the arch enemy of Furies.'
Grimmel called to the Deathgrippers and they turned towards him, pupils narrow. They would be perfect hunters for the job. 'I will do my best to complete this task.'
'You will do more than your best,
' his mother rumbled, turning to the tunnel she had come through. 'You will complete your challenge.' She Shifted to her hybrid form and vanished into the tunnel, no farewell forthcoming.
The Bewilderbeast commanded his new companions to follow him and he plunged back into the ocean, sending up a silver wave that crashed over the stony beach. He powered through the water back to his tribe, the full moon giving him strength and an urgency. He had until dawn to get as far away as he could before his tribe awoke. They would search for miles for him and, even in dragon form, he did not want to be seen.
With great effort he Shifted to his hybrid form and swam to the beach, the current trying to drag him back into its embrace. The six Deathgrippers landed on the beach in a line, still except for their wavering tails. He crept across the sand silently, his bare feet scuffing pebbles from his footing, and snuck over to a tree with three small hammocks and a larger one strung from its branches. Luckily he'd made camp a little way from the rest of his tribe, for the noise of humans annoyed him to no end.
He looked down into first hammock, the adult sized one, and his gaze softened the slightest amount before returning to a cold stare. His partner, not wife because they had never married in the ten years they had been travelling together, lay asleep on her back, her red hair fanned out and green eyes flicking beneath her eyelids. If he had been a normal Viking he would have called her beautiful. But he was not a normal Viking. He was Grimmel, and nothing in his world was beautiful.
He gazed into the hammock right beside his partner's, the tiny form inside the fabric nearly lost in the folds of a blanket. Even though his youngest daughter was three years old now she was still small, her growth stunted from arriving prematurely.
He moved to the next hammock. Inside this one was a six year old boy, his scruffy red hair a mop atop his head. He was bright for his age, willing to learn and listen to his father. And Grimmel was pretty sure this kid had no dragon side.
Lastly he came to his eldest, the white haired daughter who was yet to Shift but was close to it. Eight years old was young for a Dragonblood to first change, but it was not unheard of and the faint pattern of scales on her skin told him it would be the next full moon.
He looked over his family. The youngest he would leave, she was too young and too much of a burden for his mission. But his son and his eldest would be useful to have around. A gullible boy who listened to whatever his father said and a Dragonblood who could possibly fly, with those two, the quest could well become easier.
As gently as he could he untied either ends of the hammocks, wrapping the strong woven fabric around his chosen children. They half woke as he padded away, sleepily asking where they were going.
'We're going on an adventure,' he murmured, hating the way he had to speak to little kids. 'A long adventure that you will need your sleep for.' He snagged a coiled rope that hung from a tree and laid the groggy bundles on the beach, fashioning a makeshift saddle bag for the two small humans to ride in. The Deathgrippers were still standing in a line, so still they could have been statues.
Grimmel tied the improvised bags onto the nearest Deathgripper. Unlike the other five dragons, this one was green and red instead of black and red. He told it in Dragontongue to look after them before he fetched his boots from a cranny in between two rocks, a dry, sheltered place he had hidden them in earlier.
He tugged them on and waded into the ocean, not caring how wet or cold he got. He let himself Shift back to his dragon form, a sigh escaping him as the tension of staying in human form on a full moon was released. He called his Deathgrippers over, making sure the green one was closest, and set out towards an island that he knew had a port built on it. He would need leads to find the Night Fury, and food for the young ones.
With dragons in tow, Grimmel swam throughout the night and into the morning, the anticipated island finally coming into view.

This is a really interesting

This is a really interesting idea to get some backstory to Grimmel's life! Sounds promising.

Gothic dragon tamer from the North

SoD code if you want to be friend with me: GQH902

About my SoD character;

Name: Darcarion Wolfblood

Gender: Male

Age: In his twenties

Hair: Dark blue
Eyes: Dark blue

Main dragons:

- Nightwing (Monsterous Nightmare, male)

- Rattlesnake (Triple Strike, male)

- Scorpion (Death Gripper, male)

Shortly about him: A headstrong and fiery young warrior, grade A nightmare-tamer. Loud, proud and mostly in there where the magic happens. He can be a bit of a muttonhead in time-to-time, but his heart is always in a right place. He's a nice balance between raw power and brain (mostly power though). Born and raised outside of Berk, he's from the clan of Wolves, so loyalty and the family are both everything to him. He's the son of the hunters, but the passion about dragons made him to search Berk. He's pretty flexible with his attitude and can get along with everyone, most of the time, but he has some sort of bond with Dagur and Snotlout. Maybe it's the same dragons.

HE STOLE HIS OWN KIDS. WOW. GREAT GOING, GRIMMEL. Seriously, he doesnt even love his children. That's just sad.
I like this way of connecting his obsession with killing night furies to something a bit more realistic than 'I wanted to.' That being said, twice? Who were the first two? Cause I'm pretty sure Toothless made three.

My bestest forum buddies:

From the bottom of my heart, I'm grateful that you guys are my friends. I really don't know what I'd do without you. You're sometimes the first ones I say good morning to and always the last I say goodnight to. You've helped me grow so much over the time I've known you. I could be feeling like everything is going downhill, but you guys always make me smile. You're the ones I go to when I need to vent all the emotions inside or when I need to do some high-quality fangirling. I've bounced countless ideas and random blurbs at you, and you're willing to laugh and discuss them when no one else would. You make me a better person.

Internet friendship is such an interesting thing. You get to know that person from the inside. You get to know them through who they really are, not the money they may or may not have, not through appearances. You know their true heart and thinking. You have a shoulder to cry on and someone to celebrate with even if you've never met each other, never seen each other. They know you better than anyone in your reality does, and they accept you for who you are on the inside, not what you look like on the outside. You meet people with the same fandoms, same hobbies, same idealogies, same morals as you do. You relate to these people who you've never met. People you don't even know the names of. People who could live half a world away from you. People who you never would have met otherwise. These people, these friends. They support you no matter what. They understand you. They love you.

It's a beautiful thing, this type of friendship. It's completely backwards from real life, because you never see them. You just know them. "Don't judge a book by its cover." can't even apply. You have no cover to judge. You just get right to the wonderful pages. Everyone who I've met here proves that the internet can be a wonderful thing. And that there are so many good people in this world full of darkness.

You guys are like siblings to me. You aren't even just fri(end)s anymore, because there's an 'end' in friend. You guys are fam(ily). Ily means "I love you."

...And I love you all 3000 <3

Chapter Two - Planning

Really, he had to find a way to control the Deathgrippers while in human form. As soon as he'd turned to leave for the port three of them had began fighting over a dead fish that had been washed up on the beach, their tails striking down in an attempt to fend each other off. One Deathgripper's tail impaled another in its shoulder and the struck beast was instantly cowed, its pupils slits and head bowed. Grimmel, curious now, called it over and it came obediently. From the spike on the tip of its tail dripped a purplish green liquid, beads of the venom running down its scales. He swiped his finger along the spike and examined the green stuff, looking from it to the Deathgripper.

'Stop them fighting,' he growled in Dragontongue, Shifting to his hybrid form.

The dragon stalked back to the fish and slotted itself between the two fighters, whacking them with its wings and tail. Grimmel watched it, noting how it seemed to have no thoughts for defending itself, only focused on doing his bidding.

The Dragonblood commanded them to stop and they reluctantly lined up, the green Deathgripper sitting further away from his fellow dragons. With a low growl he told them to stay put and not harm his children, who were asleep under a tree after they'd had a breakfast of fish.

Grimmel kicked out the dying embers of the small campfire he'd built earlier that morning and headed away from the isolated beach, climbing over the sharp rocks that cut it off from the rest of the island. The trading port was on the other side of the island, a fifteen minute walk for him with his long stride, so he was pretty sure there was a slim chance of discovery. He snaked through the tall grass that covered half of the island and entered a stunted forest of oak, the smell of trees strong in the morning sunshine.

A quarter of an hour later, just as he'd predicted, the first few wooden houses came into view. They were painted brightly and had a new look to them, as if they had only just been built, and the ground around them had been compacted as if many boots had trodden it down. Through these huts he saw a few people walking around older looking buildings, carrying baskets and nets and pulling rickety carts. As he strode through towards the harbour his sharp hearing picked up the whistle of wind through ropes, the hum of conversations and the repetitive call of traders advertising their wares.

He swiftly bought bread, cheese, salt and a leather knapsack to carry the supplies in. In his hurry the night before he had forgotten to snitch one, and the makeshift ones he'd bodged up were already occupied. Luckily he had enough coins in his pocket, along with a waterskin, and some hidden back at the beach to last for possibly a month if he was careful.

The Dragonblood made his way to the harbour, where a trader he knew was calling to passers by. 'Glass vials for only fifteen coins each! Come from the farthest reaches of the Archipelago! You won't find a deal like this anywhere else!'

Grimmel approached the trader from behind and eyed the vials on the table beside him, an idea forming in his mind. There were at least twenty of them in a wooden box, small, but large enough for what he was planning. 'How much for the lot?' He asked, making the trader start and spin around.

'Ahh, Chief Grimmel. Great to see you again!'

Grimmel nodded respectfully, if a little stiffly. 'And you, Johann.' He gestured to the box of vials, impatient to get away before Johann launched into a tale. 'If I were to bye the box full, how much would you charge me?'

The trader clapped a hand on to Grimmel's shoulder, rather harder than was necessary. 'For you, old friend, I'd sell the lot for two hundred and fifty coins.'

Grimmel slowly moved away from the hand to look at a basket of leather. 'And what about this?'

'Now that I could do for just a hundred coins.'

The pale man narrowed his eyes, immediately seeing through the trick. The leather in the condition it was in was worth around fifty coins, and the box of vials was apparently worth three hundred.

'There's a funny story of where that leather came from,' Johann began. 'I met a fellow trader off the shores of...'

Grimmel groaned inwardly, but he realised this could be used to his advantage. He let him ramble on for at least ten minutes before interrupting. 'Well, now that I know the tale of the leather, may I buy it?'

'But of course!' Johann exclaimed, still half in his story world. 'What did I say was the price?'

Perfect, Grimmel thought. 'You said the vials were five each and the leather was fifty.'

Johann snapped his fingers as if he'd just remembered something. 'That was it! My memory is like a bucket full of holes some days.'

The Dragonblood gave him the coins and swung the basket onto his back. 'Well, I'll be seeing you,' he said, picking up the box.

'Always a pleasure to trade with you, Chief!' Johann called. 'Ohh, did I ever tell you of the time I...'

He left the trader telling his tale to a bewildered looking woman and stalked along the edge of the harbour, watching people intently. A docked ship caught his pale eyes, drawing his attention away from human life.

It was a wooden, barnacle encrusted vessel, larger than the fishing boats that were to either side of it. The sails were furled but he didn't need them to know who's boat this was, the skull for the figurehead was enough information.

He walked on and surreptitiously turned his head to look at the other side of the ship, his eyes widening slightly. The whole right flank was scorched and blackened, a hole had been blasted near the top of the side and the smell of burnt timber drifting faintly on the air. His quick eyes examined the damage and picked up the subtle hints that told him what kind of dragon had caused this.

'—and what did this?' A male voice said from the deck. Grimmel looked up and saw a wide-shouldered man coming out of the hold, followed by a woman with an impressive winged metal helm.

'A dragon. A Night Fury, specifically,' she said, her voice rough and accented. 'It came out of nowhere and blasted this ship. The crew leapt in the water and it picked them off with its fire. Luckily it didn't come for our ship, too.'

Grimmel stopped walking and pretended to adjust the strap of the basket, his full attention now on the conversation.

'—last we saw it was flying south, not even bothering to hide in the clouds,' the woman was saying. 'It ruined a good ship. No one's going to want this wreck now.'

The Dragonblood turned and called up to the two people, who were now at the top of the gangplank. 'How much work does this vessel need to be sailable?'

The woman's eyes narrowed as she came down the ramp. 'Were you eavesdropping?'

'Oh, no no no. Why would I do that?' He answered, shifting the basket to a more comfortable position. 'I just overheard that a boat was not wanted. Is it for sale and how much work would it need?'

The two people looked at each other. 'Well, it needs a good patch up and waterproofing, and two of the ribs are cracked, and the sail has a rip in it. But I guess we could trade it if you're willing to take it on.'

He considered the work to be done, and decided. 'You're Dragon Hunters, right?'

    'Yes,' replied the wide man.

'What about this, then. You help with restoring the ship, and I'll help with hunting down the Night Fury, hmm?'

    'You were eavesdropping!'

Grimmel held up a hand as if to ward of the angry words. 'Oh, do calm down. I was passing by and heard you talking, nothing more.' He held out his held up hand to shake. 'So, do we have a deal?'

They both looked at his pale hand as if it were a snake. 'How can we be certain you're a good Hunter?'

He sighed and reached into one of his many pockets, pulling out a black scale the size of a coin. 'This here is a scale from a Night Fury that I took down when I was just a boy. Ever since then I have travelled from village to village, island to island, freeing people from the tyranny of the beasts. If you need proof, just ask the trader over there.' He slid the scale back into his pocket and pointed to Johann, who was off on another extravagant tale.

The woman glanced that way. 'I'll pass,' she said. Both of the humans turned their backs on him and had a whispered discussion that he heard every word of, then faced him again. 'It is not definite, but we accept. For now.'

Grimmel smiled and held out his hand again.

'Not yet,' the woman shook her head. 'Not until you can prove you're a good Hunter.'

'Fair enough,' he said, withdrawing his hand. 'I'll be back tomorrow.' He turned away and began on his way again, eyes flicking around.

'Hey!' The wide man called. He half turned back to see what they wanted. 'What's your name?'

'Grimmel,' the Dragonblood replied. 'And you two are?...'

    'Griselda,' said the woman.

    'Ivar,' said the man.

He nodded and walked on along the quayside, his pace quickening the further he went. Now he had to prove he could hunt dragons, restore the ship, keep the Deathgrippers under control and look after his children.

What have I let myself in for? He wondered.

Chapter Three - Memories

This is set when he was a boy, fyi.

Hidden in a thicket of thorn bushes he crouched, a dull-grey knife gripped in his hand and a crossbow slung over his shoulder. Through the branches he could see midnight blue scales that merged with the night, the small pinpricks of light on them tiny reflections of the crescent moon.
Grimmel took a breath. He'd never k.illed a dragon before, and in some ways, he did not want to. But orders were orders, even if he was just a boy carrying out his mother's commands, and he would have to take this dragon who'd rebelled against Cendane down.
He crept out of his hiding place and cautiously approached the sleeping Night Fury, the knife handle slippery from sweat. The dragon was curled under a tree, its tail fins over its snout and wings close to its body. With a shaking hand Grimmel raised the blade, the tip aimed down for a fatal strike. With as much force as he could he thrust the dagger down, the edge of the sharpened metal slicing through scales and air and into ground. Grimmel looked up from where the knife was buried up to its hilt in the earth and saw the dragon had raised its head, a deep cut below its left eye showing where the blade had caught.
He gulped and backed away from the uncoiling Night Fury, leaving the dagger in the ground. As the dragon padded towards him he grabbed the crossbow and fumbled an arrow from his pocket, nearly dropping it when the Fury began growling.
His back hit a tree and he looked into the dragon's blue eyes, watching its white edged ears flatten threateningly. With his hands trembling like a pebble on a drum he took shaky aim. The Night Fury snarled, the edges of its teeth red from where the blood from the cut had leaked into its mouth. It lowered to the ground and readied to pounce, wings spreading slightly as it launched itself forwards. In a panic Grimmel pulled the trigger, not knowing where he was aiming. A howl pierced his hearing and the Fury flapped aside, trailing red drops of blood, and crashed down a bank to the river far below. He heard the splash as the scaled body hit the liquid, and the groan of pain that came after tore at his slowly hardening heart. He looked at the weapon in his hands then peered over the bank to the snaking stream, hardly believing his eyes when he saw the dark blue body lying motionless on the rocks.
He sat back on his heels and gave a heavy sigh. I've k.illed a dragon, he thought. And a Night Fury at that. He ran a pale hand through his equally pale hair. He had succeeded with his task, his mother would be proud.
Grimmel retrieved the knife and a scale that had fallen and headed through the trees towards his home, not hearing the groans of the Fury as it hauled itself to the riverbank and began to painstakingly lick its wounds.

A nightlight?

Very interesting. It has occurred to me that if NF like LF so well how come there are not more hybrids? Poor thing though- I hope it recovers!

Chapter Four - Hunting

The meeting had gone well. Mid morning he'd walked into the port and found the two Hunters, accompanied by two more, on the damaged ship. After the pleasantries had been exchanged they'd discussed what needed repairing for a good length of time before talk turned to Hunting. They agreed that he would track down and kill a Zippleback that had been plaguing the port for some months now. And tonight was the night he'd do it.
His attention turned back to the leather strips in his hands and the sharp needle that was currently burrowing into his palm. Hastily he pulled it out and sucked at the red drops that formed there, tasting the metallic, coppery liquid strongly. That was something he would have to figure out. How to stop blood coming out through the hollow needles he'd bought that morning after the venom had gone in.
He finished the last few stitches and called over one of the red Deathgrippers. It came cautiously, eyeing the leather suspiciously. Grimmel caught hold of its tusk and slipped the head collar onto the dragon's head, causing it to draw back and shake its head to rid itself of this new thing. He quickly picked up a needle capped glass vial filled with purplish green venom and screwed it into the metal fixtures on the collar, taking care to keep a firm grip on the Deathgripper's tusk as he did so. Almost immediately the red and black dragon became docile, its pupils slits like when one of its comrades had been stung before.
The Dragonblood put his head to one side and decided to experiment. In Dragontongue he commanded the dragon to fetch some driftwood that was a little way down the beach, then followed his order with a specific whistle. He tried it a few times with Dragontongue and whistle, then used just the whistle and was triumphant to see that the Deathgripper did his bidding as if he'd spoken. Quite soon he had a pile of driftwood by his feet and a thin smile on his thin lips.
'Can it even see?' A girl's voice asked. He glanced to his left to where his children were and saw his daughter, Arianwen, huddled under the lone tree. Myth was nearby, sitting on a rock and drawing the Deathgrippers in the sand, but he looked up when he heard his sister.
Grimmel looked at the dragon's eyes and assessed the size of its pupils. Judging by the thin, pencil line of black it could probably only see a blur of colours.
'Not much, I'd say,' he told her.
'Then why did you do that?'
He sighed. He was seriously beginning to wonder why he'd brought her along. She'd been questioning him all day. 'Because they were getting out of hand.'
Arianwen squinted to look at the green Deathgripper, who's scales shone brightly in the afternoon light. 'They seem fine to me.'
'There have been times when they're not,' Grimmel growled.
The eight year old waited for her father to turn away before speaking again. 'Like when they were fighting over the fish?'
Grimmel spun back around and gave her an accusing glare. 'You were asleep,' he stated.
'No,' she corrected him. 'I was awake. You didn't notice.' She paused to rub her left shoulder, a clear sign that she would soon Shift. 'Why have you got them?'
    'For hunting reasons.'
Myth, who hardly ever said anything, spoke up. 'Hunting?'
'Yes.' Grimmel considered his son with a hunters eye. Myth had always been interested in hunting. From the time he could walk he'd been tracking animals and setting traps, and at the age of four he'd caught a rabbit in a snare. The Dragonblood had already taught him the basics, so maybe it was time to teach him more. 'Do you want to learn how to hunt dragons?'
Myth nodded enthusiastically while Arianwen glared, her blue eyes boring into him. She'd never liked hunting, preferring to protect than take down.
'Follow me tonight and take note,' he said to the six year old. 'But keep hidden and quiet at all costs.'

The Hunters arrived soon enough. All four of them, creeping quietly over leaf litter and brushing past branches. They had decided that morning to meet Grimmel halfway to the Zippleback's cave, so as to see his ambush technique in action.
With nods exchanged between them they set out in a line, Grimmel at the fore and Ivar taking up the rear. It wasn't far to walk to the cave, around four minutes at most, and in that time he saw only once a flash of red hair through the trees. His son was doing well at staying hidden.
At length they reached the hollow in the small cliff and he signalled for the Hunters to halt. He could see the two headed dragon's tail trailing out of the dark, the yellow-green scales turning grey in the failing light.
'Stay back,' he hissed, and flowed towards the cave, keeping low to the ground and loaded crossbow in hand. There was no movement from the dragon, not even a twitch as he approached. He raised his weapon to eye level when he entered the mouth of the cave, finding the weak point in the dragon's armour through the sight right away. His hand tensed to pull the trigger and the tip of of the arrow wavered slightly as it pointed at the soft place on the Zippleback's neck.
Where there was a red gash deep enough to k.ill.
The Hunters were still where he'd left them, watching him expectantly. Not wanting to give away that the dragon was already dead, he fired the arrow into the mud floor and drew out a knife, advancing into the chamber cautiously and out of sight of the humans. He pretended to scuffle with the beast just for the realistic effect, then poked the tip of the knife into the cut. It came out with congealed goo and a fly stuck to it.
'Ew,' he muttered, wiping the blade on the softer neck scales. It had been dead for around two days by looks and smell of the creature.
Grimmel slipped the knife into its sheath and looked over the body, noting multiple scratches, gashes and even burn marks. This Zippleback had fought something, and fought it hard. And the midnight scales that littered the ground told him what.
'Hey! Have you been eaten or what?' One of the Hunters called.
Quickly Grimmel pulled a loose tooth from the dragon's jaw, holding his breath as a stale fishy smell wafted up. With the tooth clutched in his hand he walked confidently out of the cave, even kicking the two limp tails aside on his way past them. 'It's dead,' he said.
    'Are you sure?' Asked Griselda.
'Yes,' he held up the tooth and came towards them. 'How else would I have got this tooth and kicked those tails away if it were alive?'
'Fair point.' Griselda stood up from the bushes they'd been hiding in. 'We'll help you fix the boat. As soon as it is done you help us hunt down the Fury.'
'Agreed,' he said. 'I'll be at the docks in the morning.'
He said farewell to the Hunters and turned to the darkened forest, sensing eyes watching. 'Myth?'
There was a rustle and the green eyed boy appeared from the murk. 'That Zippleback was already dead, wasn't it?'
Grimmel wondered for a moment if he should tell his son, then realised he'd find out for himself anyway. 'Yes, it was.'
Myth just glanced at the now black interior of the cave before he vanished into the forest like a ghost.

Chapter Five - Shifting

A month had passed since he'd deserted his tribe, and it was now nearing autumn. The full moon was soon to rise, he felt its hold over him growing, his inner dragon becoming restless.
Arianwen felt it too, maybe more strongly than him, because she was pacing the length of the beach and massaging her shoulder. She growled at Myth when he asked her what was wrong, both of them seeming surprised that she had uttered such an animalistic sound.
Myth was becoming a fine young hunter, his tracking skills were already better than the experienced Hunters over in the port. He had begun accompanying Grimmel on his expeditions to the town, casting his critical young gaze over the repaired boat. He'd spotted the little things, such as a hairline crack in the keel or a nail rubbing on a rope, that would have caused disasters if not fixed.
The four Hunters approved of Myth, they liked his spirit for the hunt. Soon he'd integrated into their group and had even picked up a little of their accents. The Dragonblood wasn't sure if he like this or not. On one hand it was good that he could learn so quickly and so well, taking on the advice of Griselda, Ivar and the other two as if he were a sponge. But on the other hand he was becoming more sure of himself, sometimes not listening to his father at all.
A panicked screech brought Grimmel back to reality. He sprang up ready to defend, his fin-wings spread threateningly, to see a white, Night Furylike dragon standing stock still in Arianwen's place.
He relaxed and laughed at the dragon's expression. It was a mixture of shock, incredulity, panic and surprise. Myth's was much the same, just toned down because he liked to keep his emotions hidden.
'It's alright,' he told Arianwen, stifling his laughter. Her wide blue and red eyes turned on him, almost accusingly. 'You're a Dragonblood, like me. It means you can Shift into dragon form whenever you want. Except at full moon,' he added after a moment's thought. 'When you have to Shift.'
Her eyes narrowed and she growled, 'Then why haven't you Shifted yet?'
'I'm experienced. I can hold onto my human form for a little while at full moon.'
Arianwen backed up and turned a tight circle, her movements tense. 'How do I turn back?'
    'You can't until—'
At the word "can't", her eyes widened again and her breathing quickened. Myth leapt away as her tail swooshed around and almost thwacked him.
'Arianwen! Calm, please!' Grimmel commanded to no avail. He turned and dove into the water, the cold liquid sweeping over him like a cool wind. Only a few yards out he let the moon's pull take him and he Shifted in a shower of water drops. He turned and called out with a Bewilderbeasts control, aiming the penetrating click at the white dragon. With his sharpened sight he saw his daughter's pupils retract, her tense muscles relax slightly.
He heaved a great sigh. He couldn't blame her for reacting like that. He remembered the first time he'd Shifted, and the panic that had entailed.

It had only been two months since he'd faced the dark blue Night Fury,  and only one month since his twelfth birthday passed.
He'd been sent out into the night to hunt down a Sand Wraith near the coast. To his mind it had not been troubling anyone, just minding its own business in the woods. But Cendane had insisted on it, telling him not to worry when the full moon rose but to embrace the change. He'd asked her what that meant, but she would not answer him, only turned away and rubbed her shoulder as if it hurt like his did.
He wondered if the inner dragon she'd spoken about some time ago had anything to do with tonight. She'd said that he was probably a Dragonblood and that at every full moon he would Shift, but nothing had happened for nearly a year so he'd given up thinking of it.
Grimmel stilled when he heard a snap of twigs. Up ahead he could see the Sand Wraith, its pale brown scales shining in the moonlight. It knew he was there, because it was looking over its shoulder with a startled expression on its Furylike face.
He crouched down behind a tree and for a moment thought that the crossbow on his back was loaded and had triggered itself, because pain like a scorching fire suddenly shot down his spine. He yelled out, sending the Wraith whirling into the sky, and dropped to the ground on all fours. His sight blurred, then sharpened dramatically, and he saw that the trees around him had been flattened away from him. With a groan he tried to sit up, but found he couldn't. He looked up and saw that not only had the trees been flattened, but the ones that were standing were below him.
Then he looked down and saw that his hands were now massive white paws with long claws.
Grimmel panicked. Yes, he'd had a sort of warning for this, but to turn into such a huge creature so suddenly was a shock. He found himself crashing through the remaining trees to the small cliff on the edge of the island he was on and practically threw himself into the ocean below, white water rising high after him. He plunged deep into the sea before he rose up again, kicking with his strong dragon legs and breaking through the surface.
The moonlight shone bright on the waves and tusks that he had somehow not noticed. He slapped the water with them and blinked the salty spray from his eyes, his mind not working quite as it should.
'My son,' a voice he recognised rumbled. He spun around as best he could and looked up, seeing a dark shape of a huge dragon flapping towards him. 'Just as I thought, you are a Bewilderbeast.'
'Cendane?' He asked. His voice was deeper than normal, more gravely.
'Yes,' she said, coming low to the sea, her wingtips brushing the surface. 'Your dragon side has taken after your father. You are a strong Dragonblood, you will do well.'
'Dragonblood?' He asked her, confused. Was this the inner dragon she'd spoken about?
Cendane gave one mighty flap of her wings and turned. 'Come,' she called. 'I will explain to you.'
Grimmel swam after her, his movements still edged with panic, and soon they came to a bank of fog. Without hesitation Cendane dove through, and he had no choice but to follow

Another good chapter! Curious tho: will you be explaining why Grimmels' children are furies while his family line is RD and Bewilderbeast, which is passed down?

Looking forward to more ^^

Dragonbloods are real! XD

They just Shift into whatever dragon they are most suited too. E.g. Hiccup is a NF, but Valka is a stormcutter.
