"I'm amazing at art!". I know I'm not "bad" at drawing or art (althought some people may be critque .-.). I also don't want to sound like I'm bragging. Hope it makes sense :)

Don’t say it. The truly talented show. They don’t say “Look I’m good.”

I get what you mean and I think a lot of other artists have the same problem. It's difficult not to sound arrogant or humble-braggy about skill, or one's perception thereof.

If someone calls their own art 'great' or 'amazing', people will have high standards before even looking at it. People will expect the work to be great or amazing. It always ends up being disappointing for me. It's like "Oh this artist calls their own work amazing? this person must be really good if they're saying tha- OH never mind." At some point it can become pretty cringy, too, depending on how much they over- (or under) estimate their skill.

It really depends on how you perceive your own skill, imo! I personally try to be honest with others and myself. I know I'm not bad at art, generally speaking, but I'm far from what I personally consider to be 'good'. If someone asks me if I'm good at art, I just say that I'm 'not bad at it', or that I'm decent at what I do. Just think of how good you are now, and compare that to your artistic goals. How close are you to your ultimate goal? How do you hold up against the cream of the crop?

I you're confident in your work, just say you're good! If people really disagree with it then it may be time for some self-reflection, or a great opportunity to receive some constructive criticism!

I concur.

While an artist shows their work, most of the time they are their own worst critic.  While others might see a good, great, or awesome piece of art, the artist can tell those looking the mistakes they made, what they would change if they did the same drawing again, and what they learned to get better.  The stock similar answer I always hear, "Well, I did not even notice those things.  You did a great job."

The artist knows what the good and bad they did in their art.  Those looking on do not know what the background story was behind the art and how much it took to create the art in the first place.  All they see is a finished product and they judge based on that.

While trying to show off one's art, be confident in yourself, give some or a little backstory why you chose to create such art, any lessons learned, new techniques learned, and/or say what you would do to get better the next time you create art.  Pointing out any mistakes or flaws in the art is a tricky thing do without degrading your own art.  Pointing these things out can show that you are honest about your art and what to continue growing as an artist to learn to get better, but a lot of times professionally (right now in college learning how to show off my art -or in the college lexicon- portfolio pieces to instructors who know what employers are looking for) pointing out your mistakes will usually go against you.  Be confident in your pieces.  Then if those looking on spot your flaws and mistakes, then defend why they are there by telling what happened and what you learned to get better the next time.  In other words, instead of looking at them as mistakes, look at them as opportunities to tell others (and yourself) how you can get better as an artist.

I don't exactly agree with the idea that 'you're your own worst critic most of the time'. People usually tend to be incredibly poor at assessing their own art until a certain point, and won't spot stuff wrong with it until someone else points it out. It's more often the artist themself who doesn't notice their own shortcomings as they're used to seeing their own work and won't notice the same grating mistakes they make over and over again.  This is why criticism is so important.  People can't learn from their mistakes if they don't know they made 'em.

After all, the background story and amount of time it took to create doesn't matter. Not to the viewer, and it shouldn't be for the creator unless the process is actually relevant and a significant part of the piece, which it usually isn't. An interesting process doesn't make something better than something that has a less interesting one if the end result looks poor.

Just me two cents. I thought I'd share my experience on the whole concrit thing :þ

True.  I was saying that more from the perspective of an artist that knows what to look for and where to find it, when they know their craft well enough from their experience doing the craft.

Early on when one is developing their art, these things don't matter all that much.  However, now while I am in college, listening to instructors and professors that have recently been in the workforce and constantly talking to employers of companies, the background especially the process of what it took to make art does actually matter.  Because if there is a project you spent hours upon hours on and you only have the finished product in your portfolio, anyone looking at your portfolio will not understand the work that it took to complete the project.  In other words, they are more likely to undervalue your work unless you specifically say something about your project in your portfolio.  This is where Case Studies come into play.  Case Studies are basically a story about what it took to complete the project with a brief description of the project at the start.

Even if a project utterly failed, was bad in your eyes, or just did not work out, if there is something that you learned from the experience then that is valuable.  With regards to portfolios, everyone will put their completed pieces in, but if there projects that did not quite work out but you learned something that made you a stronger artist, then that makes it worthwhile to put into your portfolio.  Even more so if you are going to come back to it later to fix what went wrong, thus making something that was bad into something good to show that you don't give up on something.

The process of making a project is important as I found out while collecting things for my portfolio, resume, and cover letter when applying for two internships at Pixar Studios, a story and an animation internship.  I am following Pixar Recruiting on Twitter and someone tweeted to them what they look for in a cover letter.  "One page or less. Always customize for the position (and company!) - we want to know you understand the role. Share an experience that has shaped your work-ethic. Are you a team player? Tell us something that we can't get by looking at your resume. Illustrate your curiosity"  While that talks about the cover letter, all my instructors agree that using Case Studies for specific projects that took you a long time, had many moving parts, and/or and several stages is a great what to showcase you are not just jumping into making art but taking the time to research, sketch out ideas, make some drafts, and then start doing art with a plan and end game in mind.

I don't see why you would need to tell someone how good you are at art.

Vic, Neo, Vintage, and Joh are right. If you go around telling people that your art is amazing, it does make you seem like an attention seeker. Most artists, including those whom are very good at what they do, don't go around telling people that their art is the best, it raises peoples expectations and they can be disappointed, or if the art is very good, they seem like jerks with big egeos. So to go around saying that your art is amazing, is never really a good idea. If someon asks, just tell them either "I'm confident in my talent" or whatever you feel. ;) most people find it annoying for someone to say something like "my art is amazing" so I wouldn't recommend you do that. :\

Well uh

Just say it? I mean, you don't HAVE to say it, but if you want to, just do it!
Actually, you already did that.
If you don't want to seem like you're bragging, there's no solution, some people think this is bragging, others think that's bragging... Why even care what others think (rethorical question, I know reasons, thanks)
Fishing for compliments might also be a way to get attention, like writing in your signature you're a horrible artist XD (no offense, just found it funny)

Things you don't need to know about me and my dragons to stay alive: My viking's name is nightrainOfSummer. She's not really a character, rather a version of myself. I do have a story but it changes a lot so I don't write it here. One of my dragons is Sandstorm, a sand colored Sand Wraith with dark green spots on his body and yellow spots on his wings. He loves flying high above the clouds and feel the freedom and the wind beneath his wings. Then there is DeadWrong, a dark blue Deadly Nadder, named after a song by Adler. He's a bit of a rebel, likes to do things on his own and we had quite a lot disagreements in the past, but I strongly believe I can trust him. His best friend is Sandstorm, he's known him since he has hatched. icyRoad is my white Groncicle with a light blue pattern and a dark purple belly. He was eager to prove himself to the other dragons at the beginning, especially to DeadWrong since they are about the same age. His relationship to Sandstorm is like a good father-son relationship. I have two Whispering Deaths, Megaphone and Whisper in the Dark, Megaphone being slightly older than her brother. They're both black, Megaphone, named after the lyrics of Nothing As It Seems by Pearl Jam, with a pink and WhisperInTheDark, named after a song by Skillet, with a white pattern. They hang out with each other most of the time. Megaphone is the louder one, she's very talkative, while Whisper in the Dark is calmer and only talks when he believes it's important or when he's asked. dormantVolcano is my brown and red Gronckle. She's peaceful and easy to impress and loves playing games with other dragons, especially with baby dragons. She's a really good story teller. Then there's lightMyFire. This orange Monstrous Nightmare hatched on the day the roll-on containers next to my house caught fire (still don't know why), that inspired me to name him after this song by the Doors. He's pretty confident and likes to talk bad things about others, but only the ones he really likes. He's also protective and funny. RiverAndConcrete, my grey Hideous Zippleback with blue pattern, named after two of Izzy Stradlin's albums, is a bit older than lightMyFire. She's like his little sister and they love to tease each other and tell each other how much better they are, but they're also the ones they can go to when they're sad. Like Sandstorm, RiverAndConcrete loves exploring, only that RiverAndConcrete prefers to do it with others. Since Sandstorm isn't too happy about company when doing that, RiverAndConcrete is constantly begging the other dragons to come with her. The ones that usually join her are icyRoad, Megaphone or deadHorse, my black and white Deadly Nadder, named after a song by Guns N' Roses. She's getting on with the others pretty well, but the older dragons (except for dormantVolcano, lightMyFire and RiverAndConcrete) still see her as the "younger Nadder" which bothers her a lot, even though she loves to learn about her abilities from DeadWrong, so she wants to show the others that she's a different dragon than just a younger version of DeadWrong. Then there's Asura, a white-greyish Armorwing with red and black stripes. He's more of a loner, doesn't hang out with others that often, but if he's needed, you can always count on him. The dragons he's getting along with the best are Sandstorm and dormantVolcano. I also have a yellow Mudraker, his name is Mudhoney, like the band Mudhoney. He's a rather quiet dragon, but sometimes you can catch him playing around at the beach. If you do so, make sure to join his game, he's always happy to have more players, it doesn't matter if they're dragons, humans or other animals. He's open and friendly to everyone who wants to be his friend. His best friend at the moment is liveWire, a green Flame Whipper with a dark red pattern who was named after a song by Mötley Crüe. She's playful, a bit cheeky and she loves playing tricks on others, but sometimes she's going through dark times, however, those times have decreased in number and time. She still hasn't showed me why, but she promised to do it when she's ready for it. Then there is TBone, a purple Boneknapper with blue ends of the wings. The bones are white, of course. He's a curious and secretive dragon. His best friend is DehydratedCoyote, a light brown Shivertooth with even lighter stripes, named after two songs by Izzy Stradlin (Dehydrated and Milo). He's down-to-earth, calm, a bit secretive and open to everyone who is open to him. Sweetchbladeknives, an orange Razorwhip whom I initially wanted to call Sweet Switchblade Knife after the lyrics of Rocket Queen by Guns N' Roses, hatched three days after DehydratedCoyote. She doesn't have high demands to be happy, is more comfortable on the ground than in the air and is easy to get along with. My red Hotburple Dragon Cannonball, named after the song Human Cannonball by the Toadies, isn't only hyper for a Hotburple. He always wants something to do and gets bored easily.  Unfortunately, my other dragons don't have the energy to always play with him, so he's often unhappy. We all try to keep him busy, but it's just not possible all the time. Hopefully, I'll get another energetic dragon soon to make him happy. What's more, his wings aren't as strong as they should be because he was sick when he hatched, so flying for a long time is hurtful for him. Papercut, a purple and green Razorwhip who was named after a song by Nirvana, is the ambitious and self-critical sister of Sweetchbladeknives. She is constantly working on her abilities and tries to achieve better results than her sister. One of my Triple Strykes, Emperor Scorpion, is copper with extremely light blue, almost white pattern and yellow belly. She's quite sarcastic and arrogant, but once she gets to know and like you, she can be really sweet and may do everything for you. Firework, my dark blue Singetail with red pattern and yellow belly is shy and loves playing on the beach with Mudhoney. He doesn't mind getting dirty. I'll write something about KillerOnTheRoad, my baby Death Song, Emperor Scorpion, Demon Stinger, my Triple Strykes, Wildfire, my teen Monstrous Nightmare, Threadfail, my baby Hobblegrunt, Splashdancer, my baby Tide Glider and Quatsch und Tratsch, my baby Hideous Zippleback, as soon as I've gotten to know them better. I don't have a main dragon, but I choose one dragon to level up. It's DehydratedCoyote at the moment.

Outside of game info: I love listening to music as you might already have noticed, I'm watching One Piece (I still have around 300 episodes to go) and what I like the best about HTTYD are the dragons. My favourite dragons are the Skrill, the Stormcutter, the Triple Stryke and the Moldruffle. I also play Rise of Berk and I read Warrior Cats (in German). My favourite movie is Into The Wild.

I have experience with that. My friend often says he’s really good at video games. So I play with him, and tbh he’s terrible. So why do I bring this up? I honestly don’t know it seemed appropriate. Also to let you know that sometimes even saying your good at something can be a problem, even if it’s true.

About My OC

Name: Leader, because he doesnt know his real name.

                                                                    Gender: Male

Hair: Sort of a brownish color. Not totally sure what to call it.

Eyes: Blue with a goldish ring around the pupil

                                                                    Height: About 6' 3"

                                                                    Age: 21

                                                                    Apearance: Tall and slender

Clothes: Dark grey shirt with brown pants and black boots and a black cloak and a                                                                                                       dark grey mask

Weapon: A pair of Katana, usually only wielding one at a time, or a staff, and often a                                                                                                       few knives

Personality: Dark and mysterious, with little emotion. Can be very crafty, taking advantage                                                                                              of any opportunity. Also has a bright cheerful, humorous side, usually only                                                                                                      seen by dragons. Spends most of his time aimlessly wandering the                                                                                                                    archepaelago, saving injured or captured dragons when he can.

History: Was lost at a very young age, not remembering where he                                                                                                                                       came from. He was taken in by the tribe of the Shivering Shores, raised by the                                                                                               cheif's daughter, where he learned to train dragons and play the guitar. Most of                                                                                           his songs are depressing though, so he doesnt play near anyone. He started                                                                                                   "exploring" when he was fifteen, and met Windstreak when he was sixteen.

                                                                    Dragon: Windstreak

                                                                    Species: Stormcutter

                                                                    Age: Titan wing

How Leader Met Windstreak

(Told in first person, cuz im lazy : þ)

I had sailed to a remote island when a snow storm set in. I was a young and adventurous at the time, and would not heed the warning of the elders when they said my wanderlust was going to get me into trouble one day. I was desperately searching for my ship or at least something to eat, when i heard a piercing screech. "Boars" i thought to myself. Now i really nedded to find shelter. I was walking along the edge of a cliff and rounded a corner when i saw a young dragon surrounded by the boars. It was a young adult male stormcutter, truly a sight to behold. He was outside a cave entrace and looked to be defending his home. I couldnt just stand there and watch the skirmish, I had to take a side. I knew I couldnt side with the boars, nor would i want to. So i drew one of my swords and stood my ground. The fight was on! With boars dropping like flies and me and the weary beast holding our own. I wondered why boars would want to take over a cliffside cave out of all places, so i looked inside. It was a nest of eggs! No other dragons were on this island, so my guess was the stormcutter was raising them himself. There were just too many boars, we had to flee. I ran inside and grabbed the eggs. then, not remembering my dragon training lessons, i jumped on the dragon's back and, understanding the situation, he took off. We landed on a nearby seastack to catch our breath. The dragon gave me a look as if he was dissapointed in me, then i showed him that i had remembered the eggs. He darted over to make sure they were alright. Then his skeptical expression turned to grattitude, and he bowed his head to me. It was then i knew i had made a lifelong friend and partner. We flew back to Berk, and gave the eggs to some trusted friends we knew could care for them. The very next day we were gone, and everyone knew we had gone off to explore. Now i had assurance that i could explore the world and have someone to look out for me. It turned out that dragon wasnt as yoiung as i thought. In a few years he molted into his titan wing stage. I named him Windstreak, because his swiftness made him look like a streak of color in the sky. What did i learn from this? Nothing really. I still had that wanderlust inside and was still a reckless teen, but i was no longer alone in the world.

Wolf

Wolf is my in-game character. Her full name is 'Wolf and Star'. She takes on my own personality, which is quite similar to that of Lynx. During quests, Wolf loves to muck around and try to break the system by utilizing glitches- just for laughs, but she always produces reliable results. She is a fair Viking and she never uses glitches for her own personal gain. Some of my profile info will be listed below:.............

Characters:

Lynx

 Art was done by DuskDayBreak

Lynx is bold and loud. She is like Luna Lovegood in the sense that she is rather... odd. Loud, shameless and weird. She is more animal-like than human. Lynx enjoys being flashy, showing off her skills. Once she sets her mind to something, she is naturally good at it. The problem is that she loses focus easy and doesn't like setting herself to standards. She craves adventure and can grow bored easily. She is particularly fast on her feet but has low stamina levels. She is strong and tall for her age. Lynx is stubborn and laid-back most of the time. She does not like to follow orders. Some of her skills include: being double jointed, the ability to be able to climb almost any surface, very good at mimicking animal sounds and is EXTREMELY good at sneaking around. However, there is a side to Lynx that she does not show very often. She is very lazy and selfish at times, mainly because she lacks compassion towards humankind, caring more about dragons and animals more so than humans. This tendency causes her to be merciless in the face of battle.

..............................Lyra

.....................Art was done by Marg The Loony and Chameishida

Lyra is very sheltered and shy. She suppressed her emotion and looks down on those who do are emotional. Lyra can be rudely sarcastic at times and accidentally offend someone. Don't expect a public display of remorse. This does not mean she is feelingless though, she feels emotion, but, she is just very insecure about it. She does not like showing weakness or personal attachment, more insecurity, and less sociopathy. Though in fights, she doesn't appear to have a sense of honor and isn't afraid to fight dirty. Lyra is willing to do anything to ensure her well being, and the well being of her mother. Which could be a weakness. She values her self-preservation. She usually has her hood masking her pale delicate face, which sunburns easily and long hair.

Nyx

 Art was done by DuskDayBreak

One of Nyx's most defining traits is her brash and sarcastic attitude towards everything that breathes. She is the type of girl who does not have to do much to stand apart from the crowd. However, Nyx is no way an extrovert, the reason why she puts herself in social situations is purely one of two reasons, the first one being is that she wants to go people watching. Where she sits in some corner and watches people, how they react and their social cues. She just observes them, untangles their motives and finds their interests. The second reason is that she wants to show up the competition, along with being stubborn, Nyx is a show-off. The problem is, natural talent can only get you so far. Because of her years from people watching, she has become very keen on observations. Smarter than the average person, she is able to look at any given Viking and deduce a thing or two about them. Sort of like Sherlock Holmes but not nearly as skilled. With her great intelligence, comes social anxiety. Nyx buried this under layers of brashness but, this insecurity can be sorted out by the way she avoids social and emotional get-togethers. Due to her inability to express her social anxiety, Nyx finds herself at a lack of friends. She usually plays this off as her not wanting any friends but sometimes, when a dragon is your only friend, you can get lonely. The result, she makes a lot of enemies. Usually because of her showoff-ness and Brash attitude, and sarcasm. In reality, Nyx wants some friends, but she sees this as a weakness and as part of her insecurities which she buries deep inside of her and does not let anyone see. She's not edgy, she's just misguided.

Aeryn Nyght

 Art was done by Tosilohi

Aeryn also has a sense of show-off-ness, an over-the-top, dramatic character. She takes any given situation, brandishes it with a flare of sarcasm and performs, drawing attention to herself all the while managing to act edgy or sweet, or however she wanted to be perceived. This need of hers to put on a show made her invaluable to the man while she was on his side. Like the theatre kid she should be, Aeryn has expertly crafted this skill of taking on different personas, and she isn't afraid to add in some cliche drama to her dialogue and actions. Constantly referencing pop-culture, Aeryn is interesting, but the tiring person to be around. The problem with her extroverted, boldness is that few get to witness the actual Aeryn, not one of her many characters. In a sense, it is quite similar to the multifaceted personality disorder, only, Aeryn recognizes her many personas. She chooses not to show anyone her true colors due to some insecurities. These different personalities are the shields she has put up for emotional protection. With Aeryn, you never know if her reactions are genuine or just part of the show.

Gail Cyrek

 Art was done by Katarile

Gail is very softspoken. She does not like attracting much attention as people have a tendency to stare. She is very insecure about her face and does her best to conceal it. She gets very annoyed if someone asks about it. However, with this silence comes the ability to listen. She observes the world around her and is able to spot even the tiniest of details. This silent brilliance has made her a stellar judge of character. She reads body language very well and has a certain flare of stubbornness about her. Still, she is very dark. Generally, when she speaks, most people cannot hear what she says, which is probably a good thing because what she does say is usually pretty dark or gory. She often says random and slightly disturbing things and speaks extremely softly anyone can barely hear her. Gail seems to be pretty timid but is generally ruthless. She is a bit of a pyromaniac and will do almost anything to get her way.

Hi! :)

Scalecakes has the right idea. When you're speaking to someone about your skills and or accomplishments be sincere and genuine to them. Highlight your accomplishments and as well as your struggles in the conversation. Acknowledge anyone who has helped you reached your goals or someone that may have inspired you. Just do not belittle anyone, just leave out any comparisons.

Brag your little heart out

Honestly? I don't see the problem with bragging about something you're good at or proud of. If you spend a lot of time training to make amazing sceneries, or great headshots or whatever your art is all about, then go right ahead and be proud of it!

"I'm fantastic at character design" or "I'm great at sceneries" aren't bad things to say. You don't have to excuse yourself or your art.

Anyone who's out there thinking you're annoying for being proud of yourself and what you can accomplish is a buzzkill who is just trying to get you down. And besides, if you can match up to what you say, then it's not bragging, it's just establishing fact.

But what if someone calls their work amazing/perfect/fantastic or anything like that, but it turns out that the work is objectively bad? Just a hypothetical question, I'm curious.

My opi-onion

If they're proud of it they should be allowed to say that and if others don't like it they can tell them (or not, depends on what they feel like doing)

That doesn't mean you should just insult them, of course.

I can also understand when people are annoyed by others who think their "art" is better than any others' although it isn't.

Taste isn't the same anyway and I'm not quite sure if something can really be "objectively" bad (I can say I find something objectively bad but what if it's good for even just one person? Idk, I can't really express myself, sorry)

If they're proud of it, they should say "I am proud." But bragging about superior skills leaks into over-confidence if the work in question is terrible. Something can be objectively bad if there's an obvious lack of understanding and executing of the basics. So with drawing anatomy, shading, etc. Artists and writers who are talented show, they don't waste their time running around saying, "AAAAA I'M SO GOOOOODDD." People looking at work don't need someone bragging in their faces. Usually, the audience can tell themselves if the artist is good or not. So the energy used to brag is wasted. On the other scale, in referance to writing (this is just an example), all the people i've seen who brag about how good they are usually can't write. There is confidence and then there's being cocky. Confidence is a referance to your feelings. It's important to feel confident about your work. Cockiness is when the confidence grows so bold it affects your relationship with other people.

I do agree

But I think it's their choice if they want to run around saying "AAAAA I'M SO GOOOOODDD". If that makes them happy why not. How other people deal with it is another topic. Some would rather look at the artist's work if (s)he brags, some rather if (s)he doesn't.

Wiggles the whispering death ate my subject

If the person cares about how they are perceived that would be one reason not to brag. If they don't care whatever floats their boat but if they do care about how the people around them see them that is something they should consider. Given the maker of the thread asked how they can tell people they are good at art without bragging I think it's safe to assume the person who made the main thread cares about how they appear to other people so pointing out that going around telling people you are amazing at something can make people look down on you is a perfectly valid thing to point out in this case.

Edit to add; And yeah. I don't know about objective badness. I've seen some pretty dumb art (A.K.A. art I think is stupid) in museums. I agree with you on that point. Some people put a circle or dot on paper and call that art. Or what about the splatter art that looks like the artist just let a two year old play with paint. There are even youtube videos where people place real art of that next to two year old art and half the time the people they ask to sort the two can't tell the difference. I agree with you that objective badness doesn't always exist. It can for certain styles but not for art in general.

Hypergoof.

Seen here with a snow nadder and a statue Termite gave her because she couldn't sell it.

(Wiggles bit it's left arm off.)

Below is my profile pic made bigger to show the amazing detail

It's Hypergoof going berserk with a durian mace.

(Drawn by my amazing sister)

(She even drew the fur on the shoes)

(My in game character)- A friendly young Viking who interacts better with dragons than with people. This is partly because although she now lives on Berk her family was originally from the Berserker tribe. When Dagger came to power Hypergoof, her sister and her parents were forced to flee as they were terrified of their new chief after he threatened to kill Hypergoof's parents for speaking out. The family found a new home on Berk. After working hard to get the Hooligans (what Hiccup's tribe was called in the books) to trust her (mostly) Hypergoof got a job working at a dragon rehabilitation center which is part of the reason she knows so many dragons. Hypergoof has a few problems. One, she is terrified of hot things. (A problem I myself have) She will not touch any stoker class dragons as a result. (With the exception of two individuals) She will still try to help a injured stoker as long as she doesn't have to touch it. Her other problem is also based on one of mine. I am Hypersensitive to sound and certain noises hurt me. Hypergoof has this too but in her the pain can cause her to go Berserk. One of the worst noises is whistling. She will attack anyone who does it near her. (Note this does not mean that I will fire troll those who's character whistles in game. It is a character trait for role playing and storytelling only.) Hypergoof also can't stand large crowds for too long. She will often retreat if things get too noisy. Hypergoof is a good fisher and farmer but a horrible fighter. (Unless she goes Berserk in which case she may get hurt but will do significant damage to her opponent.) She is generally friendly unless she gets stressed out in which case she becomes snappy. Most of her friends are dragons. Because of this Hypergoof has picked up dragoneese and speaks it quite fluently.

Littlebird (Hypergoof's sister) and Hypergoof's parents don't have much back story at the moment. None are in game.

Termite- Is one of Hypergoof's few human friends. (She is in game now as HypersFriendTermite. The chances of seeing her are low though. If seen she will probably be with Wiggles.) She is a woodworker hence the name. She didn't trust Hypergoof when they first met but soon found that they had a lot in common. She is the true trainer of Wiggles but often leaves him with Hypergoof when she must work on something.  Hypergoof and Termite like to take dragon food out into the wilderness ware they wait to see what shows up. A pass time they lovingly call dragonwaching.

A young rambunctious whispering death with a sweet heart but a naughty mind. Hypergoof's friend Termite adopted him as a baby when his whole family was killed by dragon slayers. Unlike most of his species Wiggles could be described as... cuddly. He wants to be friends with everyone he meets and seems completely oblivious to his size and appearance. He simply does not understand that he is scary and is baffled that some people won't play with him or give him a hug. His best friend growing up was Termite's mutt of a dog Drool, and Wiggles learned the odd habit of waging his tail from his canine friend. Most dignified dragons (especially whispering deaths) are appalled by the behavior but no amount of laughing at Wiggles or begging him to stop for the sake of dignity will change anything. Wiggles simply doesn't care. All that matters to him is how much fun he's having. He will even allow himself to be dressed up for snoggletog and will parade around in the Jingle bells and antlers with pride. (As seen here.) Wiggles is an all around charming and sweet creacher but he is not without flaws. He can not be left alone for more than five minutes or else he will chew on something, especially furniture. Usually damaging it beyond repair. He can not be taken to a marketplace because the concept that Termite "hasn't bought that yet and so he shouldn't eat it" is something he can not seem to grasp. Nore is the one that "That doesn't belong to us!" Termite has taken to carrying a bag of dried mutton strips (Mutton is Wiggles's favorite) to redirect the serpent's attention if she catches him with the look in his eyes that she learned to recognize as his "I'm going to chew on that" face. Despite her best efforts Wiggles is a hand full and Termite often leaves him with Hypergoof if she has to go do some woodworking. Wiggles thinks of Termite as his mother but he thinks of Hypergoof as a friend and enjoys playing with her. Hypergoof shows no fear towards him at all and will even let Wiggles hug her if he asks permission first. (Hypergoof does not like being touched without warning but will happily accept a hug from a friend.) Interestingly Hypergoof found that Wiggles is a very good racer despite his poor eyesight.

Cuteseepie

(Relaxing at home)

The first dragon Hypergoof ever rescued and one of her closest friends. He is a Pink and Blue deadly nadder. When he was a hatchling his curiosity got the better of him. He wandered away from his nest in the dead of winter and found himself lost in a blizzard which would have been the end of him if he hadn't stumbled onto the front lawn of Hypergoof's house. His crys alerted the family who quickly took him in out of the cold and thus saved his life. Cuteseepie and Hypergoof have been friends ever since. Cuteseepie has a mellow gentle nature broken up occasionally for excitement at an adventure. He will defend Hypergoof or if need be prevent her from attacking someone who whistled. His level headedness balances out against Hypergoof's goofyness rather nicely.

Ziggy

(Showing off again)

A skrill that Hypergoof found injured while dragon watching. Her success in helping him helped her get the job she currently has and also built up a friendship between Hypergoof and Ziggy. It probably helped that Ziggy is not a very old skrill, only having just left his parents, before somehow getting hurt. Much like a cat Ziggy tries to be more dignified than he really is. One moment showing off his impressive wingspan with a majestic yawn and the next he's off chaiseing a light or a leaf when he thinks no one is looking. He often roles his eyes when Hypergoof playfully teases him by saying his name in a funny pitch or calling him "The Zigster" but a poorly hidden grin betrays the fact that he doesn't mind as much as he lets on. Ziggy is decently friendly to most people who don't insult his dignity (only his close friends are allowed to do that) but he is still technically a wild skrill. He spends most of his time off chaising storms and doing whatever else wild skrills do only he stops by every once in a while to visit Hypergoof. Manny people wonder why he keeps coming back as he always seems more annoyed with Hypergoof than anything but it is just a mask. A false front. He secretly really enjoys her company. In fact perhaps Hypergoof's absurdity amuses him. FUN FACT: Before meeting Ziggy it was Hypergoof's life dream to see a live skrill. (Partly her Berserker heritage) For her meeting Ziggy was akin to meeting a celebrity. Of course things got more normal between them as they got to know each other but Hypergoof is still pretty darn proud that a skrill let her be his friend.

Causemoe

(Knows the owner of this house hates it when he sits there)

A young flightmare who was one of Ziggy's friends then also became Hypergoof's friend when Ziggy brought him to Berk. Unlike Ziggy though, Causemoe decided that he liked Berk and the school so much that he would stay. He is a complete showoff and loves to be the center of attention. He can get huffy if he finds someone who does one of his favorite things better than him. He especially hates it that Wanda can glow brighter than him. She often tones down her glow when she's near him to spare his feelings.

Wanda

(Knows the best places for the best view)

As mentioned before, Hypergoof is scared of stoker class dragons. When approached by a fireworm her normal reaction is to flip out as if the little dragon was a bee. Wanda however is an exception to this rule and not only is she a fireworm but she is a fireworm queen. Hypergoof once got herself lost in a snowstorm and was found by one of Wanda's workers unconscious and soon to freeze if something wasn't done. Wanda is a very empathetic dragon. Even though she didn't trust humans she didn't want to see a helpless creacher d.ie in such a way. She took Hypergoof into her nest to warm up. Hypergoof was stuck there for several days not knowing which way was home until Cuteseepie tracked her down by scent and took her back to the village. During Hypergoof's time in the nest Wanda decided she liked this little human. Hypergoof was terrified of most of Wanda's children and since Wanda didn't understand Norse yet Hypergoof communicated her unease by sticking as close to the fireworm queen as she would allow. Purposely mimicking the bodylanguig of a scared puppy to get her point across. Wanda was sympathetic of Hypergoof's fear and allowed the little human to stay near. Keeping the meaner members of her family at bay until Cuteseepie could find the lost viking. Wanda was a bit suprized to find that a dragon was the one looking for the girl. She has a healthy dose of curiosity in her and often visits Berk for "research purposes" as she calls it. Wanda is curious about humans and wants to learn about them. Hypergoof is grateful to Wanda for her kindness and will come when she calls. Something Wanda finds amusing but also gives her an easy target to study. Personalitywise Wanda is the type of person one might have a fancy tea party with. She is every bit a queen but is also an intellectual with a kind heart. She hangs around Berk to study the uneeq human and dragon interactions there. Seeking how to possibly spread that type of friendship for the good of dragon kind.

Burpetta

(Wonders if she'd get in trouble for blasting me into the water behind the camera)

A pink thunderdrum who someone in the dragon rehab center found as a baby then dumped on Hypergoof since no one wanted to deal with the hatchling. Their relationship started out terribly due to Hypergoof's sound sensitivity. In the beginning Hypergoof could barely stand Burpetta but eventually the dragon realized that her loudness has hurting the human and learned to be more gentle with Hypergoof's delicate ears. Sometimes Burpetta can be careless but she never means any harm and will correct her behavior when she eventually realizes she did wrong. She is kind by nature but loves a bit of mischief now and then. She also has a bit of the stubbornness common in her breed. Once she sets her mind to something it is difficult to convince her otherwise.

Chomp

(Sleeping like the baby he is)

A screaming death. He is the baby of the group despite being the biggest member of it. When Alven found out that one of the eggs he'd planted under Berk had hatched a screaming death he decided he wanted such a beast for himself. He knew he couldn't capture the adult so he decided to get his hands on a hatchling. He captured a bunch of the successful breeding pair's family members in the hopes that more of them would carry the incredibly rare screaming death gene. The captive dragons were force bread and after many many attempts Alven got what he wanted. He didn't get to keep it though as a couple Hooligans who had snuck into Alven's hideout looking for helpful info about future plans found the baby screaming death instead. They took it back to Berk to figure out what to do with it. Several people wanted to kill the little guy before he could grow into an island eater but Hypergoof over heard and was horrified. She knew what it felt like to be disliked for what she was rather than who she was. Some people didn't trust her because she was a Berserker. She knew it wasn't fair to judge someone that way. She stole Chomp and (With Wiggles and Termite's permission) hid him down Wiggles's tunnels. Wiggles didn't mind and enjoyed having a roommate to play with. Chomp stayed there unknown until his loudness and the sheer amount of food being brought down there gave him away. By then though he was old enough that he had enough personality to proved him a gentle giant rather than a monster and he was allowed to stay. He is not at all a full grown screaming death and has the personality of a giant toddler. He is surprisingly gentle especially considering his breed. He is so mild tempered that he will stare blankly at fire trolls wondering what they are doing. He will only engage if he thinks it's a game. Despite his gentleness his size and strength can be a problem. He will occasionally knock someone over with his tail by accident then stare at them in confusion not smart enough to understand why the person fell but knowing it was still somehow his fault. When other screaming deaths were allowed into the school Chomp was thrilled to have playmates his size. Chomp is very much still a baby mindwise. He is very food oreeinted and can be prompted to do nearly anything for a snack. It's a very good thing he doesn't consider humans food. It's hard to imagine that he could ever be related to the screaming death who once tried to eat Berk but he is. The danjoris one happens to be his somewhat distant uncle. Fun fact: Hypergoof often refers to Chomp's uncle as Mr. Island munch and insists that she will continue to do so until his actual name is found out or created.

Punaluu

(LOVES sand)

(I really shouldn't be suprized)

A female sand wraith. Punaluu comes from a subspeasys of sand wraith on a volcanic island with black sand. (Like the beach Punaluu is named after.) As such they adapted to the environment by becoming black. A side affect of this is that now the subspeacys looks even more like a nightfurry than the normal ones. Some money hungry showmen found out about them and decided to make a quick buck. They stoll an egg from this island and paraded the black hatchling around claiming it to be a nightfurry. This charade ended when they made the mistake of bringing their show to Berk. Seeing that the dragon was being treated badly the Hooligans took the baby from the showmen and took it to the dragon rehabilitation center for treatment for whip wounds and malnutrition. Punaluu is much healthier now and is a happy energetic young sand wraith. One problem she has is that her dark coloring is only designed for a certain type of area and she can not camouflage most of the time because of it. Not being able to hide occasionally gives her episodes of anxiety but a quick trip to a beach ushuly fixes it. She is very shy around strangers but around those she knows she is a complete goof. She can also be a bit naughty. Sometimes she feels out of place like she doesn't belong and so interacts well with Hypergoof who doesn't fit in all that well ether.

Insulting someone would go too far, yes. Unless they're asking for it in a literal sense, of course.

Taste is subjective, but there's still objectivity when it comes to art in general. We all understand art on a different level and we all have different tastes regarding to what we like. Our emotional state also dictates what we like, liking a piece at one moment, but hating it the next depending on how we feel- and are going through. However, in its core, a piece can be judged objectively.  Color theory/ratio, proportion, perspective, composition and related are all deeply rooted in physics and math, which are all objective subjects. Something that can be subjectively observed has to come from a complex system of objective artistic elements first. People may think 'what, I don't notice things like that.', but unconsciously, we do! That's why some works can end up looking 'off-putting' even if we can't put our finger on the 'why'. Hope this makes sense!

TL;DR: art in its core can be judged objectively as art is heavily based on- and rooted within physics- and mathematical concepts.

I'll stop now, because I'll only go off on a tangent if I keep going haha

That makes sense

I just think that there are so many different styles and for every one of them there's a different kind of beautiful so they can actually be judged but there are also variations, mixes and atypical... things... sorry I can't think clearly at the moment, my thoughts seem to disappear as soon as I think them.
And about proportions, sure, but changing them can either be artistic or just a sign of not being experienced.
So my opinion is: to be able to judge someone's abilities you have to look at more than one piece... I'm really being stressed right now, I'd like to continue but it's better if I stop now anyway.

Style tends to mostly subjective, I agree! However no matter the style, you still need to base it on objective concepts in order for them to make sense. This is especially true for proportions and stylised proportions, you gotta know the rules in order to break them, or the piece will fall into the uncanny valley, or be unconsciously uncomfortable/unpleasant to look at. Human brains are silly like that!

And that's a solid opinion to be honest. Sometimes people make better stuff and worse stuff, and you can't usually judge someone's work by just one art piece, unless they're incredibly good at what they do!

Wiggles the whispering death ate my subject

Someone else mentioned that saying you're proud of your art is ok. And I agree. Just saying "I'm proud of my art." is a fine thing to say. It makes no buildup of the quality to say you're proud of it as it's just stating your oppinion without trying to make a comment on the art itself. I know you want to make a comment on the art but one really good way to tell people you're good at art is to just say you're proud of something and then show the art in question. Maybe add that you know it isn't perfict if you want to be extra humble but it's not needed.

Saying you're not bad at art like you did in the title is a decent way to say it too. You could also say you're good at it but I would avoid using words like amazing, or adding really in front of the good. You don't need to be quite as passive as some are saying but it is true that building yourself up too much isn't a great thing to do. Treat self prase like sweets. Moderation is key.
