First Generation (Daughter of Hiccup and Astrid)
"You're nothing, Speranza. A coward, just like your father," sneered Jugraina. Her father, Snotlout, came around the corner just as Speranza threw herself into a baited fight. She inherited her mother's fighting spirit, and so fought viciously, tooth and nail. "Ow! She bit me! Gimme back my hand! Take that you coward! I am Yougraeena, hear my cry!"
Speranza felt her hair pulled, and was just about to launch into an all new assault, to Hel with the consequences, when she felt herself lifted clear off the ground by the back of her shirt. Reeling, her teeth clicked together hard onto her tongue. A growl sounded next to her ear and she froze. Looking beside her she saw Toothless growling deeply in his throat. Above her she heard her father speak.
"What is going on here?" Hiccup asked looking at both his daughter and Jugraina. Shame burned on his daughter's face as she felt her father's eyes upon her.
"She attacked me for no reason! She would have killed me if you hadn't come, Hiccup," whined the baiter piteously. "See, she bit me really hard. She's dangerous."
"That's not true! She called me a coward, and then said you were one too, Dad. What was I supposed to do? Let her wipe her boots on our family's name?" yelped she.
"I'll speak to you back at the house, young lady. Bud, make sure she gets there?" the chief ordered looking at his trusty companion. A snorted rumble later and Speranza was being herded back to her home. Turning to Toothless, Speranza began speaking.
"She really did start it, Toothless. I don't know why I fight. I don't want to, but anger just builds up inside me like an angry volcano until I can't hold it in anymore. I just wish they understood," said the sad lonely girl. Her injuries began to ache as the rush of the fight wore off. Heading inside she saw her mother, Astrid bent over a cook pot making supper.
"Who did you fight today?" she asked not looking up.
Fighting back her embarrassed tears, Speranza spoke. "Jugraina, again. She called me a coward and then said Dad was one too," she said sitting heavily on a bench. She sniffed louder than she intended, drawing her mother's attention. "I don't know why I let her get to me, it's just she says something and it's like she lights a wick. It's only a matter of time before she adds zippleback gas."
Coming over to check her daughter's injuries, she remembered the time when people accused her uncle, Fearless Finn Hofferson, of being a coward. She'd proven them all wrong by learning about and then driving away the dragon that had terrorized the village.
"You've got my fighting spirit in you, but also your father's heart. Let that guide you, but you always have to listen closely, because it whispers. Now, wash up for dinner. We're having fish chowder," Astrid said rising. Inwardly she cringed, knowing full well where her little girl was coming from. "We'll discuss things with your father when he retur-" She was cut off by Hiccup coming in the house. He sat down beside his kid and stared at the fire for a few moments before turning to address the small figure on the bench beside him.

"You know you're going to have to apologize, sweetie," her father said after what felt like an eternity of him staring at her in silence. "You made her bleed. I understand you were upset, but you could have walked away."
Tears spilled over her lashes and yet she couldn't tear her eyes away from her father's. "I know, Dad," she said. "But she called me a coward, and then said you were one too. What should I have done? Let her wipe-"
"Enough!" Hiccup's voice boomed. She flinched. Never in her life had her father raised his voice at her, or in front of her, for that matter. It terrified her. Guilt flickered through his eyes for a half a second, but was gone before she could register its existence. "There will be no fighting in or because of this household."
"Hiccup!" her mother hissed. She too seemed in shock that he'd raised his voice. Speranza, thoroughly frightened, ran from the house, away from the fear, and away from her father. He ran after her after getting a nasty look from Astrid. She ran into the forest, farther and farther away from her father, who she heard crashing through the bushes after her, calling her name.
It was getting dark. Her fear began to dwindle, being replaced by her childhood paranoia of the dark. Crying she called out.
"Dad? Daddy? I'm sorry I ran away," she sat down with her back against a nearby tree quietly sobbing. That's how Hiccup found her, over an hour later.
"Oh, sweetie," he sighed with relief sitting next to her. "I'm sorry I scared you. I just don't want to see you getting hurt, or into fights. I know I can't stop you, but I just don't want to lose you." He hugged her close chasing away her fear. She sighed a small happy sound, in spite of the tears that still flowed freely down her cheeks, now red and raw from the tears. He picked her up and sat her on his lap.
A bush shook violently, growling savagely. Rising to a crouch, Hiccup set her down, gesturing for her to get behind him. A small white shape exploded from the bush. Hiccup brought out his firesword, lit it, and sat down laughing. Peeking around him, Speranza saw a white rabbit, cute with a pink nose, creepy because of its red eyes. She heard her father laugh and followed suit. Hiccup stood up, and reached for her hand. Guiding her home he used his flaming weapon as a torch.
your doing a great job! i woud love to see more :D

“DAD!?” He yelled. Stoick jumped up in shock
“What’s wrong?!” Stoick paused “Hiccup?” Stoick said a little bit surprised. Hiccup ran and grabbed his dad’s hand and started pulling him out the door.
“Dad go right to my house! I will explain later!” yelled Hiccup as he ran to Astrid’s old house. Stoick raised his eye brow, he shook his head and walked to Hiccup’s house.
“Even with one foot he is still that fastest person on the island.” Stoick chuckled. Once he got there he knocked on the door. Astrid opened the door with a smile.
“Hello Stoick, please… come in.” she said while opening the door wider.
“Hi Astrid, Do you know what’s up? Hiccup is awful…. Energetic this morning.” Astrid smiled
“When have you known him not to be energetic?” She laughed.
Suddenly the front door opened again and Astrid’s parents and Hiccup were walking in. Hiccup went straight to Astrid and held her hand. Astrid’s parents and Stoick and exchanged glances.
“Well, we called you here for a special reason.” Said Astrid. She nodded at Hiccup.
“Astrid and I are………..” Hiccup paused, then Hiccup and Astrid said in unison “We are....TO BE CONTINUED in Hiccup and Astrid "A New Life"!

Speranza shifted from foot to foot, scratching behind her ankles with her shoes. She and her mother had spent an hour that morning washing, drying and fixing her hair from its usual messy nest into three neat plaited braids that hung down her back. How desperately she wanted to skip the whole public apology fiasco and just go hide in the forest all day. At least in the forest she knew how to walk away from a scrap.
Jugraina stepped forward. "I apologize for fighting with you, Jugraina. I beg of your forgiveness and hope to put our differences aside so we may be friends," Speranza said. She stepped back allowing Jugraina a chance to apologize as well.
"I'm not sorry for what I said yesterday. I meant every single word. You're a coward, just like the chief, your cowardly father," she said.
"You're a curmudgeon! I'll make you sorry!" screamed a slighted Speranza. Her mother came forward, grabbing her by the upperarms and holding her aloft as she flailed, trying to get free.
"Thank you for the compliment, Speranza." She stopped struggling and looked at the speaker as though she had three heads. "Curmudgeon, it means beautiful person, right?"
"PFtthaAHAAHAHHA! You're making a joke, right?" laughed she. Looking at her she saw that she wasn't. Putting her head in her hands, she let out another laugh. "Curmudgeon means a difficult, bad-tempered person. I just insulted you and you thanked me for it. If that's not funny I don't know what is." Laughter erupted from a number of people in the crowd as they realized what had transpired. Soon everyone was falling over in gales of humor. Jugraina saw her chance to be rid of the embarrassing little nuisance once and for all. Leaping up on stage, she drew a sharp blade with her right hand. The situation switched from funny to potentially fatal in a span of only a few seconds. Hiccup stepped in front of his incapacitated daughter who was rolling on the ground holding her sides. Astrid joined him a few moments later. Pushing past them after a brief struggle, she pounced on the chief's daughter. Astrid cried out in horror as the blade was raised.
Snotlout broke free of the writhing mass of guffawing Vikings and grabbed his daughter's wrist. He picked her up like a ragdoll prying the knife from her tightly clenched fist. Growling at her he drug her off the stage. She cried and screamed about how unfair everything was. Astrid meanwhile turned back to her daughter and picked her up. She was still so small, only ten, and yet she'd already had an attempt on her life. Hiccup joined them a moment later, encircling the both of them with a tight comforting embrace.
"I love you," it said. "I will always protect you and will never let any misfortune befall you. You are my whole world."
Looking up Astrid met her husband's gaze. There was a physical tension in the air. So much passed between them in that one look, but if anyone had guessed, they would have likely gotten it wrong. After a brief peck the two looked down at their daughter who was now laughing slightly as the hilarity of the moment faded.
As chaotic as her life was, Speranza had a bit of an issue at night too. She sometimes couldn't sleep, and when she was awake, she'd wait until her parents were snoring. Her father's slight squeaking and surprisingly her mother's roaring were her cue that the coast was clear. She'd sneak down the stairs, out the door, and into the forest. She would follow a moonlit path to a small grotto, similar to the one her father met Toothless in. It held a secret so big if it were to be discovered the Norns only know what the consequences would be. The fact that there was a dragon there wouldn't be the issue, nor would the issue be that the dragon just happened to be a Changewing who she'd befriended. The issue was that there was a body beneath a small pile of stones. A Terrible Terror had been killed by accident when she was out in the woods on her usual nightly walk.
Speranza recalled the night so clearly. A crisp autumn evening with the frost fresh on the ground. Her soft fur boots made almost no sound as she whispered along the path. Suddenly, with a slight shriek, something grabbed her hair pulling her savagely to the ground. She didn't look to see what or who it was, she just grabbed a large rock and swung wildly behind her. She heard and felt it connect with a sickening crunch. The pressure released her immediately. Turning she gasped, appalled with what she saw. The small corpse felt so light, and warm in her arms. She carried it to her secret place. After feeding her dragon, she turned back to the issue of where to dispose of the body. A patch of freshly turned dirt would be too easily spotted from the air. A stone burial mound! It would be harder to discern from the other rocks. After she finished it, she picked some fresh wildflowers that had somehow survived the frost.
When she did sleep, she had nightmares she told no one of. Each night terror, brought on a bout of midnight walks. She'd wake her dragon, she named Isabelle, or Izzy for short, then sit and talk her fears away. She never told anyone of her friendship with Izzy, or of the horrific deed she'd done to a dragon. Other Terrible Terrors in the area at the time assured her that it was alright, that the dragon had attacked first.
She could see the grotto just ahead of her, bringing her out of her memories. Izzy sat up as she arrived, awake and alert as she always was when she heard Speranza coming. She was no fool, she knew Izzy could leave whenever she wanted. But the fact that she stayed when there was a huge blue sky to soar through spoke volumes of her devotion to the young girl who felt she had no friends, especially among the kids her age. There was Fishlegs, but he tried to befriend everyone, so it almost didn't count. Her parents, half the time they were far too busy to spend time with her, except when she got in a fight.
"Hey Izzy," she said quietly. "How's my girl tonight?" A slight noise at the back of her dragon's throat was all she needed to know her mood. "Hm...A bit tired and cranky, but otherwise good. Glad to hear it."
Something moved in the bushes behind her. Isabelle disappeared while Speranza whipped around. It was her father, woken by the singing of the Terrors on the rooftop. He'd gone up to see if she was up and found her bed empty. Not wanting to panic Astrid, he snuck out with Toothless, and followed the still damp path through the woods.
"Daddy, what are you doing here?" she asked innocently glancing over her shoulder at the place where her dragon was hiding.
"I was going to ask you the same thing," he replied approaching her. Izzy uttered a gutteral growl drawing attention to her. "What;s that? Wait right here." He approached the place where Izzy was hiding. Speranza tensed, ready to jump between them at a moments notice.
Bracing for a thrashing she knew was coming, she cried, "Daddy wait! There's a Changewing here and you're about to step in the coil of her tail."
"What?" he asked turning. At that moment Isabelle decided she'd had quite enough of this intruder. He stank to high heaven and walked with a stranger gait than her human caretaker. She lunged forward throwing off her camoflage.
"Izzy! No! Put him down!" demanded the small girl. The Changewing froze, Hiccup dangling from its mouth by his good foot. He tilted his head to stare at his daughter who now held up her hand fearlessly toward this ferocious creature. Remarkably, the dragon obeyed, lowering her head to touch the girl's hand whilst letting her captive go. "Good girl. Now, let's start over. Daddy, this is Izzy. Izzy, this is my father."
Hiccup stared, dumbfounded as his daughter, his brave, wonderful child, seemed to tame a Changewing. Standing he came to stand beside her.
"Give me your hand, Daddy," instructed the little girl. He did so, allowing her to guide his hand to rest a few inches above Isabelle's snout. "Don't look her directly in the eyes; they see that as a threat." Her dragon grumbled an agreement before turning her attention to the hand, just above her nose. She tested the scent, and spent several long minutes deciding whether or not to accept the scent.
At the touch of scales against the palm of his hand, Hiccup breathed a sigh of wonder looking up to meet a tamed Changewing's eyes.
I love the writing. :3 Can't wait to see what happens next. You're doing a good job with keeping everyone in-character. ^-^

"She set the kitchen on fire while making icecream!"
About a week later, after introducing Isabelle to her mother, who was shocked at the fact that her little girl was able to tame a Changewing on her own, Speranza noticed a change in the air. Her father barely stayed more than two minutes at the house before flitting off again to continue the chiefing duties. She approached her mother and asked her the reason.
"It's almost time for the Thawfest games, Speranza. Would you pass me the chicken? We're having roast chicken tonight," Astrid replied. "It's your father's absolute favorite dish."
"What's that?" she asked.
"It's a week long competition to determine who has the better clan. Your father almost beat the Jorgenson's winning streak one year, but instead threw the race, allowing Snotlout to make his father proud. I suppose this year Snotlout will be giving the same speech I am, to his daughter," sighed her mother. "They've been winning for a long time, about twenty years. It sure would be nice to have someone else win Thawfest for a change."
"Hmmm...Who's going for us this year?" she asked. "Because I was thinking I could enter, and I dunno, maybe win something."
"Oh hunny," said Astrid turning from the stew pot she was tending to look at her daughter directly. "Thing is you'd need to be at least ten and have both parent's permission. Or a guardian's permission if you don't have parents."
"Like Linny and Minny?" she asked looking up from the holes she was boring in the floor with her eyes.
Astrid sighed. "Yes, just like Linny and Minny. But we shouldn't talk about that, because it's kind of a sore spot for your father." About three years prior, a savage outburst of a new kind of sickness hit Berk with both fists. A lot of people died. Linny and MInny`s parents were among them. Hiccup had flown off on Toothless to get the cure, only barely making it back in time to save his own child, much less everyone else. The illness whas characterized by a wet hacking cough, high fever, and severe boils. It also brought along with it, nausea severe enough that it knocked the best healers out of commision. Those who threw up whatever they got down, survived. Those who spewed blood, did not.
Hiccup came in for his usual two minute lunch break. Giving Astrid a kiss and his daughter a hug he sat down with a sigh.
"Dad, can I take part in Thawfest?" asked his daughter looking up at him.
"Of course sweetie, as long as your mother says it's okay," he said. "Everyone partakes of Thawfest, it's a big festival, that's all."
"So I can enter the games too?" she asked hopefully. The look that passed between her parents made her face fall. They were going to say no, she knew it before they even said anything.
But they surprised her. "Maybe," her mother said. "Your father and I are going to talk it over. We'll tell you in the morning."
"Okay," she said with a smile. "What events are there?"
"There's the suspended log run, where each person is standing on a log, and one person has to try to get the others to fall off," Hiccup explained. "And there's another one where you have to throw an axe at a bunch of targets. Then there's the sheep run, which I was barely able to complete the sheep run when I was fifteen."
"Oh," Speranza said to her father.
About month after the Thawfest games, in which Speranza and Jugraina tied for the log run, Hiccup went out for his usual two day chief-meet trip. Two days later he didn't return. A search party was sent out, but dug up nothing. A letter was recieved saying that Hiccup had arrived and was on his way home. His wife clung to it, hoping he was alright.
Astrid began to worry, which in turn worried her daughter and she began asking a difficult question to answer. "Mom, where's Dad?"
"I'm sure he's alright, sweetie," she said absently patting her daughter on the head before going out the door for another patrol with Stormfly. A week went by quickly and soon everyone began to realize that Hiccup might not be coming home. Rumors began to spread that maybe he'd run off with another woman, but that was squashed quickly from the looks Astrid gave those who whispered it.
"Mom, can we leave a candle burning until Dad comes home?" Speranza asked one evening after her mother had landed. Astrid paused as though something occured to her.
"That might be a good idea. Yes, that's what we'll do. We'll light a candle until he comes home," she said heading into the house.
Noel and Speranza exchanged glances and later that night, after Astrid said good night, she snuck out of bed, wrote a note, and left it on her pillow. It read, "Mom, I'm going to find Dad. I'll bring him home, I promise. Love, Speranza." She and Noel creaked open the window under cover of her mother's snores. She took with her a flint and steel, a small hunting knife, some warm clothes, blankets, and a couple strips of smoked fish. Getting on Noel, she looked back at the house, feeling vaguely guilty at leaving her mother without an explanation. The note would have to do, knowing that her mother would never let her go out on her own.
"C'mon, Noel. Let's go find my father," she said to her dragon, who crouched and leapt into the air. Turning southeast they flew as fast as they could, scanning both the ocean and the islands, just in case her father had run into trouble and been forced to land. She'd also brought along a Terrible Terror, for messages and notes between herself and her mother.
"Speranza, it's time to get up!" Astrid called up the stairs to her daughter. No response. "Weird, she usually comes down before now." She climbed the stairs, opened her daughter's door, and froze. The room was completely empty. Falling to her knees, Astrid began to cry, not knowing where her husband or her daughter were. She looked around the room one last time, and spied the note. Reading it brought on a fresh wave of tears. "Please, Odin, Thor, Freya, and anyone who's listening. Please keep my daughter safe, and bring my husband home!"
Three days later, Noel gave a big huff. Leaving over her dragon in concern, Speranza placed a gentle hand on her neck. She sat up, looking for an island to land on. There hadn't been one in over a day and a half, and that one was little more than a small rock protruding from the waves. They'd set down on it only an hour, just long enough for Noel's wings to stretch and rest a bit, then they took off again.
"Noel, I know we can't do this forever. Maybe we shouldn't have come looking in the first place," she said as tears stung her eyes. "I'm sorry I drug you along on this hopeless endeavor. I wish there was some sort of island, even if it wasn't very big. I'd even take Outcast Island, at this point. Wait, what's that? Noel, just ahead and a little to the left! See it, girl?"
An excited growl split the air. As they got closer to the small island, a strange metalic glint caught their eye. Landing a few moments later, Speranza gasped as she recognized her father's metal leg. Her first instinct had been right, her father was alive!
"Noel, if Dad's here, that means Toothless is too. I need to send this message home," she said writing it down on a scrap of paper. She took the Terror out of the saddlebag, slipped the note into the holder, and sent it on its way, hoping it reached her mother before worry set in too much. Turning back to the main body of the island, she and Noel began looking around. "Dad! Where are you?! It's me, Speranza! We've come to bring you home!"
They spied a cave not too far from Hiccup's leg. It seemed promising, since the rest of the island was almost completely barren, save one lone scraggly tree which seemed almost laughable. Turning invisible Noel went ahead of her, checking out the cave. Speranza lit a torch for her to see by. A sound just up ahead and to the right froze her on the spot.
"Toothless?" she said recognizing the growl. Hurrying to the spot, she saw and heard Noel faze back into visibility. She saw something upon arriving at the alcove in question that stopped her short, throat tightening painfully, drawing tears and a strangled cry of, "Dad!" Her father was slumped against the far wall of the indent. Running up to him, she brought out her bag which had some clean rags, clean water, and a blanket.
"Huh? Whuh? Speranza? What are you doing here? How did you find me?" Hiccup asked groggily coming out of his dehydration induced slumber. Passing him her waterskin, she waited until he'd drank deeply before hugging him gently. He wrapped his arms around her tightly. "Hunny, you didn't happen to see my leg lying around anywhere, did you? Ah, I see you found it already." He ruffled her hair playfully and put his leg back on.
"Shall we go home? I brought some smoked fish in case you and Toothless were hungry," she said bringing them out, so happy to be with her father again. Toothless took one, swallowing it eagerly. Her father gnawed on a piece, savoring the flavor and texture of food after not having any for over a week. They turned toward the mouth of the cave and began to leave. Figures poured out of hidden openings blocking their escape. They were, once again, trapped.
"I don't want any trouble," Hiccup said stepping in front of his daughter, pushing her behind him. "I was just seeking shelter from a wind storm."
"We don't want any trouble either," said a deep voice behind them. Hiccup and Speranza whipped around. She felt her father's hands on her shoulders. "We only seek the one they call, Hiccup."
"I am he," he replied, dry swallowing.
The man in front of them removed his mask, revealing a very dark skinned man. Around them, Speranza noticed others with similar pigments in the faces of those of their captors. Hiccup tightened his grip on her shoulders. She reached up and patted his hands, letting him know she was alright.
"What do you want?" he asked the man who removed his mask, their leader, he supposed.
"We just wanted a chance to thank you for freeing the dragons from the Red Death's slavery," he rumbled. He took a knee, bowing, they realized a moment later.
"I was fifteen at the time, and was only trying to keep my father safe," Hiccup protested. "Besides, that was over twenty years ago. Toothless and I were only doing what was right. The only heroic thing I've ever done is face Drago Bludvist fifteen years ago."
She looked up at her father, and felt his hands tremble slightly. She gave them a squeeze, hoping it would give him courage. He looked down at her, met her gaze and smiled.
"You could have found another way of dealing with it, but you decided to end its suffering. We have a prophecy about you," said a young woman, stepping forward. Upon her head was a crown of gold, marking her as royalty. "My people have long been able to feel what a dragon feels, to understand what they are saying. I've spent my whole life around them. I was present when the Red Death emerged from her fiery nest. What I got from her was an intense pain resulting from something we call artheritis. So old was she that her bones and joints were decaying as she lived. You put an end to her suffering in a way she never saw coming."
"What's a prophecy?" Speranza said, drawing attention to herself.
"Prophecy means to foretell or predict future events. We saw the demise of the Red Death as coming from one who was like the Ugly Duckling," replied she. "The Ugly Duckling is a story we tell all of our children. It's about a young duckling who is not like the others, always a little late, wrecking things where he goes, and constantly getting picked on. But, when he grows up, he discovers that he isn't a duckling at all! He is instead a beautiful swan."
"Oh," Hiccup and his daughter said.
"We saw the duckling riding the chariot of night, brought by the Greek god Apollo, the sun god. It seems that it is true. A Night Fury, the dragon as dark as night, and the duckling, that would be Hiccup, rode into battle with the power of Zeus, the thunder god, and king of all gods," she continued.
"Is that everything? Because I was due back on Berk about a week ago, and my wife is, I'm sure worried about me. Our daughter came to find me on her own, and I'm sure she'd like to get home too," Hiccup said.
"Oh, you're married? She must be very lucky," said the queen sadly. "Well if you must go, then I'll not keep you here longer than necessary. You may go." She waved a hand and the other warriors moved aside allowing Speranza, her father and their dragons to leave.
Climbing up on Toothless, Hiccup looked over at his daughter and Isabelle. His throat swelled and a lump formed as he thought of what could have happened if she hadn't come looking for him. He leaned over to her as they turned homeward.
"Thank you, sweetie, for coming to find me. I don't know what I would have done without you," he called to her over the wind. They had a nice, strong, warm wind at their backs that lifted their dragons higher, pushing them faster and closer to home. By that evening, the island Hiccup had crashed on was nothing more than a speck on the horizon. They flew through the night as there was not a spit of land for a good many hours. In the morning, because of the wind that blew throughout the night, they passed over a handful of seastacks that marked friendly waters. That afternoon, Berk came into sight on the horizon.
Hiccup let out a cry of joy as he saw his homeland come into view. When they landed it was around supper, so Astrid was home, probably fretting over a pot of stew once again. Speranza knocked on the door to their house, and when her mother opened the door, she dropped to her knees and embraced her daughter.
"Don't you ever run away like that again! I've been so worried about you," Astrid said holding her daughter closer than ever.
Hiccup came up shortly after his daughter and cleared his throat. "Miss me?" he said with a smile when she looked up and met his eyes. "Wah! Oof!" She tackled him with a hug after releasing Speranza. They fell over and rolled down a small hill.
"Well, Speranza," Jugraina said in a snobbish voice. "Looks like your father was alive after all. Where'd you find him? His other family's house?"
"I'll not deign that a response," she responded turning and heading back to her house. Her father was just coming back from a bath, his third since returning the previous evening. Jugraina followed her, trying to bait her into another fight. She was still bitter about tying with Speranza, that everyone knew. Suddenly Hiccup's daughter felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning she saw the fist seconds before it connected with the left side of her face.
"Hey!" Hiccup cried, drawing Snotlout's attention from oiling Hookfang's saddle. They met halfway, and seperated their children, or rather removed Jugraina from Speranza, who now would have a black eye. Picking up his daughter, Hiccup felt something digging into his chest slightly. Looking down he let out a yell as he saw the knife that pierced her side.
Astrid and a few others came running from their houses. "Oh no! Speranza!" gasped Astrid when she saw the handle. Her daughter's eyes rolled back in her head as she lost consciousness. She slumped forward, head on her father's shoulder.
Hiccup carried her up to their house and laid her on her bed. After removing the blade so it wouldn't hurt her further, he stepped back slightly, allowing the few remaining healers room to operate on his daughter. He withdrew a few paces and waited with Astrid, whose eyes never strayed from her daughter's face. Tears filled their eyes as the night wore on and they clung to each other.
Finally one of the healers turned to them. "There's nothing more we can do. If she still breathes in the morning, she will live. I'm sorry," said the older woman with sagely wisdom. They left the house, taking the bloody rags and water with their exit. Her parents came and sat on the stools that were still positioned by her bedside. Astrid sat closest to her head, and was stroking her hair, smoothing it back. Hiccup, meanwhile, was holding her hand.
"Dream, my dear," Hiccup started singing softly but fell silent when the tears caused his breath to seize in his throat.
"Knowing that tomorrow will bring adventures near," Astrid continued, her voice thick with the tears that flowed freely down her cheeks. They sang to their daughter the lullaby they had learned when they were children themselves. No one knew where it came from, but everyone knew the ancient song. It spoke of life, and adventure. It involked the very essence of youth: happiness, excitement, the slumber that promised growth, and the warm embrace of family. The question they asked themselves was hard to answer, for only the Norns knew if their hope would live to see another day.
"Izzy, you okay?" Toothess asked sniffing her with concern.
"Oh, Toothless, I'm just so worried about my human. I don't know what I'll do if she doesn't make it," she whined curling up in a miserable tangle of scales. He sighed looking up at the house, knowing what Hiccup and lifemate Astrid must be going through.
"She'll be fine, I'm sure," Stormfly said joining them. "She takes after her father with the luck of life. Her father could have died fighting the Red Death with this nutjob. She nudged the Night Fury with a Nadder pur and smile. Izzy lifted her head.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"Well," the elder dragon said. "When Hiccup, my human, was just a few years older than his daughter is now, he shot me out of the sky one night. This was during a time when our kind was at war with theirs. He made as though to kill me, but took pity on me instead. He cut me free, thus kickstarting our friendship and the end of the war. Neither of us knew it at the time, of course. A month after we met, we'd grown pretty close, close enough that I decided to show him and the one he calls Astrid, your human's mother, my old home. They called it 'the Nest' I called it censored. Let's just say they saw what every dragon lived in fear of: the Red Death.
"The next day I was taking my usual daily nap when I sensed something was wrong. Waking I heard Hiccup calling for help. I climbed out of the cove I was trapped in and ran to his rescue. Unfortunately, while I was saving him, I was captured. His father used me to guide him to my old home. My inability to fly, along with the restraints, prevented me from escaping when she emerged from her fiery castle. I had no choice but to cower in fear. She was huge, bigger than any I'd seen before. Until I met the king of all dragons. That's another story though. To sum it up, as he and I were escaping, he was knocked off my back. I saw him fall, and couldn't allow myself to let him die. I consider him like my own son. My family died at the Red Death's jaws. Seeing her killed still fills me with satisfaction to this day." His tale finished, he sat down and began preening his wings. They were itchy, he explained.
Izzy extended her neck and gave the cheek that was closest to her a lick. He froze and turned to her. She gave him a sad look before returning her gaze to the house. Toothless looked at Stormfly, who was gawking at the young Changewing between them. Meeting her gaze, he curled around Izzy after the other dragon snapped her jaw shut and nodded. Glancing around when he heard a door open, he growled lightly when he saw Jugraina crying and screaming.
"I'll watch, you two sleep. I'll wake you if anything changes," Stormfly said sitting beside the house. She looked for all the world like a statue, immovable, and unshakeable.
Half and eternity seemed to pass before there was movement from the village. Someone emerged bringing a basket of bread. Snotlout's lifemate, Annitta, approached the dragons. She held the basket out for Stormfly to sniff. When she did and found nothing suspicious, she looked toward the house, gesturing that it was alright to approach. She woke Toothless to explain what was happening. Hiccup answered the door. He looked like he'd been worked over by twenty men wielding Gronkles as hammers. The bloodshot eyes and disheveled hair lent to the worried father look. Added to that was the palor that hung like a heavy cloud over him, and the worry lines made him seem so much older than the thirty five years that he was. Toothless rose after checking to ensure he didn't disturb Izzy, who went on dreaming if uneasily. He went over to Hiccup, who gave him an absentminded hug and scratch.
"What am I gonna do, bud? I'm sorry I didn't get you supper, I hope you don't mind. I just can't leave them alone in case something happens and I have to be there for Astrid, or be there with her," his dragon looked up at him with big understanding eyes and gave him a slight lick on the cheek. It had the desired effect and he smiled slightly, or rather scowled less. The visitor had gone home after giving Hiccup a hug that, in Stormfly's opinion, went on a little too long.
If only you could understand. I would tell you so much about my life that you can't even begin to imagine, Toothess thought sadly.
"Hiccup! Come quickly!" Astrid cried, her voice hoarse from lack of sleep and crying on and off through the night. Dawn was only an hour away, but the predawn glow showed that morning had indeed come. Hiccup disappeared, barely touching the steps, he leapt up them in two great bounds. Toothless ran to wake Izzy.
"There's been a change," he said once she woke up and looked at him.
Her eyes snapped open. She pushed her way through the thing that humans called a door. She followed Speranza's scent and fazed into invisibility, seeing without being seen. Her human was opening her eyes and looking around very drowsily. At that moment, Isabelle knew her rider would be alright.
Faces began to take shape before her eyes as she regained consciousness. Her parents were watching her with hawk-like precision. She heard Izzy crowing to the morning skies from inside the house, and just above her head.
"Ugh, Izzy. Stop, sweetie! Please, you're giving me a headache," she groaned trying to sit up. Pain threw sparks that practically blinded her as her movement aggravated the wound in her side. She gasped clutching it after pushing herself up with her arms. "Momma, Daddy, what happened?"
"You were in another fight, hunny. You tried to walk away from it, but Jugraina followed you," Hiccup said putting an arm around her back in case she needed to lay down. "I'm proud of you for not fighting. I only wish I'd gotten there sooner. If I had, you probably wouldn't have been hurt, oh I feel like such a failure!" He pushed himself up as he fought with his conflicted emotions. On the one hand he was overjoyed that his daughter was going to be alright. On the other hand he was enraged that someone tried to kill her. His duty as chief enabled and in fact required him to punish an attempt on anyone's life. The tricky bit was the fact that the aggressor's father was his close friend, Snotlout. But surely the bread from their family meant he didn't know and was sorry?
"Don't be mad at yourself, Daddy. You didn't know. I know that if you had known, you would have been there before she started fighting me," Speranza said to her father looking at him with complete confidence.
"Daddy, Mom, I think I'm ready to go outside now. I feel much stronger, and my side doesn't hurt much," Speranza said to her parents that day at noon. Sitting up still hurt of course, and always would give a slight twinge, but breathing no longer gave her cause to almost bite her lips off.
Hiccup and Astrid looked at each other, communicating with their eyes. They nodded as one. "Okay," Astrid said after a fairly lengthy discussion had determined that she would deliver the news. "But only for a little bit, just to see how you feel. And not too far from the house, either. Your father and I will be nearby just in case anything happens."
"And one more thing: No flying until you've fully recovered," Hiccup added. His daughter looked at him, blinking just a little stupidly. She thought about it a moment before nodding.
"Okay. Promise," she said.
They finished up lunch, and after the dishes were cleared away, Speranza, with her father and Izzy's help, stepped outside the house, blinking and squinting in the light. After a few steps jarred her side just a little, she adjusted her gait so that it was smooth and flowing, like a cat or the river. It helped a lot.
Fifteen minutes passed before she knew it and her father kissed Astrid and hugged them both prior to heading back to work. His wife stayed with her, moving slightly closer when someone approached her. It was Jonah, and he had something behind his back. From there he produced a bouquet of wildflowers.
"My mother said that you might feel better if someone got you some flowers. I hope you don't mind," he said sheepishly. It took Astrid a moment to realize that he meant her daughter no threat and she stepped away, letting her make the decision for herself. She reached out with her good arm and accepted the flowers.
"Thank you, Jonah. They're beautiful," she answered with a smile. She brought the flowers to her nose and inhaled their aroma.
"They remind me of you," Jonah said rather awkwardly. Astrid realized with a start that he was flirting with her little girl. It was cute and made her smile. Izzy appeared beside her rider, spooking Jonah who jumped back with a startled yelp. "There's a Changewing beside you, Speranza."
"I know, this is my dragon, Isabelle. Izzy for short," replied she.
Who is Noel? I though that Speranza had Isabelle. Is Noel another dragon she had before? Did Izzy get a random name change? Please explain, I'm very confused.
Other than that, this story is way better than most fanfics I've read. Keep it up!

A bunch of one-shots about Hiccup, Astrid, and their new daughter. Embodies the very struggles that made the movies great. But instead of Stoick being the worried father, Hiccup takes the reins as he and Astrid try to raise their children to be not just warm, honest, and good people but good dragon riders as well!

Basically, Hiccup is a viking Tarzan, raised by dragons. After a dragon raid, a peculiar machine shoots down a strange and dangerous dragon. And an even more strange and dangerous boy. Nothing short of spectacular, this book tugs at your heart strings and will pull you in like none other. Fabulous! It made me laugh, cry, and worry myself sick.

"Toothless, what are we doing here, Bud? This isn't the Cove," Hiccup said when he and his dragon landed in a slightly smaller sink hole. There was a pile of rocks on one side, and he realized with a bit of a start that this was where he found out about Speranza's dragon. Just over there was the wall Isabelle had hidden when she heard his footsteps. A small bird chirped in the trees, causing him to look up. He was surprised to see a small pack of Terrible Terrors sitting in a very thin tree that was struggling to support all the weight. "Maybe we should get out of here, Toothless. I get the feeling we're intruding."
The wind had died down enough for him to hear what the little dragons were doing. They were singing a very sad dirge, or what sounded like one. Slowly, one by one, they fell silent and flew down to the pile of fist-sized stones that had a small nosegay of wildflowers on it. It took a moment for him to realize just what it was: A rock cairn set up for a burial mound. Whoever had made it went through a lot of trouble to hide a body. But surely, because the dragons were gathered around it, it was there before Speranza met her dragon?
He approached the tomb, with Toothless following only a few steps behind. After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, he quickly removed the stones. A piece of paper fell from the rocks it was trapped in. Words written on it begged the gods for forgiveness for a crime against the dragons. His stomach dropped when he looked at the signature.
"Speranza, what did you do?" he asked softly before removing the remaining stones to see the skeletal remains of a Terrible Terror. The skull was bashed in, as though with a rock. Darkness discolored one of the stones beside the bones, and he knew with sickening certainty that it was blood. "Oh no. We can't tell anyone this, Toothless. This explains why she's been so jumpy, and so gungho to fight. No one must know about this." He replaced the rocks and the note in the place he found them to the best of his abilities. Placing the flowers in the same spot, he got on Toothless and took off. When he returned to the village, he resumed his normal chiefly duties, trying not to cringe when he saw a Terrible Terror. He went about his day as though nothing had happened. That night, when his daughter went for a walk, he'd nodded quite absently and told her to bring Izzy with her.
She gave him a strange look before heading out. She went to the alcove where she'd bonded with her dragon and instantly knew something was wrong. She went over to the grave and fell to her knees. Someone on Berk, knew her secret. Speranza looked at her dragon to find that she was already staring at her. Izzy nudged her, trying to get her to smile. It had the opposite effect.
She fell into her dragon's scaly shoulder crying her heart out. She wept bitter, heartbroken tears and begged the gods to forgive her, as she had done every night for the past two years. As always they were as silent as the stars. Pulling herself together, she turned back to the gravestones and replaced them neatly, readjusting the bouquet she'd placed there after learning the secret language of flowers. One could tell another their opinion just by sending a bunch of flowers, if the other person knew what it meant.
A chill wind howled overhead as she and Izzy made their way out of the hideout. The sound gave her shivers, and made the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. It reminded her of wolves, or a wounded dragon, circling their prey just before going in for the kill. The edge of the forest came into view after a few more minutes of walking. Her father was standing in the doorway with her mother standing just behind him and over his left shoulder. Taking a deep breath she returned to a life where dragons were friends, and everyday was normal.
(Three weeks after the attack)
"Hey, Speranza," Jonah said, startling her from her daydreams.
"Oh, hey Jonah," she replied turning to him with a smile. "What's up?"
"Oh, y'know, the usual. Hey, do you want to go star gazing with me later? I know this great spot not too far from where your father met Toothless for the first time," Jonah requested. His father Tuffnut had taken him and his wife to the Cove about a month before.
She looked over her shoulder at her house which sat as sturdy as a boulder class dragon. "I'll have to ask my parents, but I'd love to," Speranza answered.
"Great! I'll come by at 8," he smiled before running home.
Still in a bit of a daze, she went home to ask her parents if she could go out stargazing with Jonah that night. Her mother was just putting supper on the fire, preparing a thick and hearty stew with carrots and potatoes. She also added some cubes of waterfowl to the mix before stiring in some salt for flavor.
"Of course, where will you be going?" Astrid asked as they sat down for dinner. "How long will you be?"
"I'm still a bit fuzzy on the details, but it's not too far from where Daddy met Toothless. I'll try to be home before midnight so about three hours. I'll bring Izzy along for protection, don't worry," she said looking up at the rafters where she knew her dragon was draped across the roof like a drenched, waterlogged towel.
"When will he be over?" Hiccup asked as he cleared the supper dishes away.
"About 8 o'clock," she replied. A knock sounded on their door.
Astrid answered it with a warm, "Oh hello, Jonah. What a pleasant surprise! You're here for Speranza, no doubt."
"Uh, yes ma'am," stammered a very nervous Jonah. "Is she ready and allowed?"
Hiccup and Astrid exchanged glances that made Speranza and Jonah anxious. When they turned to the youngsters they were anticipating bad news.
"Just be back before midnight. Tuff and Brenhilda would kill me if you didn't come home, Jonah," Hiccup said. "But I could live with that unless my daughter is hurt. I already failed her once."
"Dad, I've told you again and again, I don't blame you! She's the one who wielded the blade," cried an exasperated Speranza throwing her hand in an arc to indicate Snotlout's house. Astrid placed an arm around her husband, comforting him. He looked at his small family and smiled, though his eyes betrayed his wounded soul.
"Go," he said after smothering his daughter with a hug. "Enjoy the stars. If you're not back by midnight, I'll be coming to look for you."
"Don't worry, chief. I'll make sure she's safe. We'll bring a dragon with us, if it'll make you more comfortable," Jonah said. A stern look that reminded Astrid of her late father-in-law Stoick "the Vast" Haddock, came from his son Hiccup. An awkward silence filled with tension followed.
"Well then, the night's not getting any younger, Jonah. Shall we go?" the chief's daughter asked trying to alleviate the situation, grabbing Jonah's arm and heading out with a cheery, "See you later! I love you!"
She called for Isabelle, who came down and followed the duo at a respectable distance. She growled when Jonah put his arm around Speranza. The latter in turn took Jonah's hand instead, relaxing when her beloved pet calmed down.
After an hour of walking, with darkness closing in around them, they came out in a meadow that had a small river with trout jumping about as high as she was tall. Jonah lead her to a grassy hill that had trees not too far from the crest and Izzy circled a few times, before settling down and getting comfortable. The pair laid down in the thick vegetation that the dragon was encircling with her body. At a signal from Speranza, the Changewing fazed into invisibility.
Great job :D keep up the great work!
Jonah clasped his hands behind his head as he leaned back allowing the grass to envelop him. Speranza knew she didn't have to be back for a few hours so she laid back with him, inching closer when a icy North wind ripped across the meadow. He extended an arm, allowing her to snuggle into his side. She placed a hand in the center of his chest and looked up at the stars.
"They're beautiful tonight," she commented quietly, not wanting to disturb the peacefullness.
"Yeah, but they're not as beautiful as what I've seen before. I know something that puts these stars to shame," he replied putting his arm around her and cupping the small of her back with the palm of his hand.
"Oh? What's that?" she asked looking up at him.
"You," he said meeting her eyes. Behind them, Izzy growled a warning. "Grr yourself, Isabelle."
"It's okay, Izzy. He's not hurting me," she murmured to her dragon, who calmed down. "Sorry, she's kinda protective of me since Jugraina, well... I'm sure you heard?"
"Heard what? What about Jugraina?" Jonah said lifting his head to look at her. She craned her neck to look him in the eye.
"She fought with me and stabbed me with a knife. The healers didn't know if I was going to make it," she said patiently. "Izzy and my father have been beating themselves up about it ever since. I've told them repeatedly that it wasn't their fault, but they just seem to think I'm trying to comfort them when I really blame them for someone else attacking me. It's actually almost comical."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute," quoth he sitting up slightly. The movement pinched the still-sore wound in her side and she winced. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, just a bit sore. You sitting up jarred the injury," Speranza said pushing herself up onto an elbow. "It doesn't hurt much, just when movement that's unexpected that twists, pinches, or pulls the cut. It's nothing, let's go back to watching the stars."
"Maybe we should get you back home," he said standing up and looking at her. "If you're not healed, you shouldn't be outside."
"Don't confine me to a bed again! Please, it took three days of convincing them I was fine just to get outside for half an hour. I'm begging you, Jonah. Let me savor a bit of freedom," she cried. "When I go home, they're going to pester me and fret over whether I can walk on my own. I hate it! Izzy at least can faze into invisibility so she's not as annoying. I don't blame my parents for hovering, but for crying out loud, I'm not a baby anymore!"
"Fine," he said sitting down beside her. His arm went around her as he rejoined her in the grass. "We'll stargaze for another hour, then we're going back. I don't want to tire you."
They resumed their former positions with her cudded into his side and him with an arm around her. The stars twinkled and seemed to blaze a little brighter as time went on. Suddenly, without warning, Ervindil's fire lit up the night skies with it's brilliant hues. She uttered a soft exclamation at the sight, not knowing her parents had experienced the same thing on their first date as well.
Jonah looked at her and saw her eyes droop shut. Soon she was dozing, and from there it wasn't long before she slept. He kissed the top of her head before placing his hand over the one on his chest.
Twenty minutes, he thought with a yawn. Just twenty minutes and then we'll... Then he was asleep too. Midnight came and went, but Hiccup and Astrid, along with the rest of the village, were asleep, and completely oblivious to the fact that Speranza and Jonah were late.
The next thing Speranza knew was that she was a little cold. She opened her eyes and saw, to her shock, green grass, coated in dew with the sun shining brightly a few hours after dawn. She lifted her head and saw a brown vest, blue shirt, and, following the vest up, Jonah. He woke up a few seconds later. He looked down at her and their eyes met.
"We are so dead!" they cried in unison.
"Not yet you're not," Hiccup said behind them, startling them both into low crouches. "Speranza, you promised to be back by midnight. I'm very disappointed.
"I'm sorry, Daddy. I lost track of time, and then Ervindil's fire started to shine and oh it was so beautiful!" his daughter said spinning around on her way over to him. She hugged him, enjoying the heat that came from him. He embraced her in return. "Don't be mad at Jonah, please. He wanted to go back home when I moved the wrong way and brought a twinge of pain from my side. I insisted on staying though, and he said another hour. Then I guess, we fell asleep."
Hiccup sighed and looked at Jonah. "Is this true? Did Ervindil's Fire light up the night sky last night?"
"Uh, yes sir. It truly was a breathtaking experience," he stammered.
"Well alright then, but where's Izzy? You both promised you'd take a dragon with you," the chief responded after what felt like an eternity of silent thought.
"She's right here," Speranza said. "Izzy, faze back." Her dragon obeyed, stretching very cat-like, yawning and sighing a blast of dragon morning breath at the three.
"Eww!! Izzy, what did you eat that's making your breath so stinky? I'm sorry you had to experience that, Jonah," Speranza said batting at the air before her face trying to clear it. Toothless coughed and wrinkled his nose at the smell.
"Eugh! It's alright, I've smelled worse. My father has terrible morning breath after a night of downing ale," said the young lad rubbing his eyes against the stench.
Hiccup cleared his throat, trying to keep his stomach under control. He'd smelt his own dragon's burp once, the very first Snoggletog after the war ended. The memory churned his uneasy intestines. "Well, we'd best be getting back, don't you two think? Toothless and I will take the three of you home, and then we've gotta go to our chiefing duties. Isabelle, why don't you fly next to us?" he suggested as he swung up onto his dragon. Jonah looked at Speranza, who looked at the rest of them before climbing up after her father. Izzy made a strange noise in her gullet before exchanging glances with Toothless. Hiccup gestured for the boy to join them on the Night Fury, and when he did told them to hold on. They took to the skies, with Speranza biting back a winced yelp as her side was pushed and pulled sharply.
A few days after she returned from her date with Jonah, Speranza was once again standing on the stage she had apologized to the bitter young girl who had tried to kill her. This time, however, it was Jugraina who was in trouble. She listened patiently as her father issued the decree that her assailant had disobeyed.
"As many of you may have heard, my daughter was attacked a month ago by someone who clearly intended to cause bodily harm which would end in the loss of life. The law dictates that any who show the desire to harm another citizen in this village will be punished. Jugraina knew this, and yet she still continued," Hiccup said over the murmuring crowd. He looked into the gathering and met Snotlout's gaze. Seeing the blink and nod from the latter, he announced the punishment. "Jugraina, how do you plead?"
"I plead guilty! And I don't regret anything! You don't have the guts to punish me, Chief Coward," cried the accused. Silence fell like a Gronkle with no wings that climbed to a tall peak.
"Moma," Speranza whispered to her mother. "Daddy's the bravest Viking I know. She's wrong about him being a coward. But what's gonna happen to her?"
"Shh," Astrid murmured in return. "Just listen. Your father's the bravest I know too, why else do you think I fell in love with him?"
The chief was continuing after the unexpected accusation. "It takes more than phyisical strength to be brave. My father taught me that. Since you plead guilty to trying to kill my daughter, I hereby sentence you to banishment!" The crowd began to roar with noise. Hiccup had to scream to be heard over the cacophony "Get her off my island!"
Speranza sat at the foot of the statue of Stoick the Vast. The inscription read, "Slayed in battle for a noble cause," and that was all. She often went there to think, or like today, talk. She looked up at the statue for a brief moment before returning her gaze to a clump of weeds swaying gently in the breeze. She took some leather strapping from her bag and began braiding as she spoke to the marble-and-limestone pillar of time.
"I know you can't respond, and I appreciate that you don't judge me like everyone else. I feel like, even though you're just a statue, you're so much more than that. I feel like you understand me even if you can't talk," she said. "I'm scared, sir. My father's been meeting with a man late at night. I can only barely catch Dad's end of the conversation. I don't like the way the other man talks to him. Sometimes I can hear little pieces of the other side of the conversation, like if the wind is blowing my way, or not blowing at all. I don't know if you can do anything, but if you could, put in a good word with Odin to protect my father. I don't want to lose him. I heard something about a 'deadline' being tonight."
Her mother leaned out the door and called her in for supper. She looked down at her braiding and was pleasantly surprised at the design she'd just created. It was very intricate and easy on the eye. She hoped it would make her father smile, he hadn't in what felt like years, but was really only a few weeks. Dinner was spent in awkward silence. She knew her parents had been fighting a lot lately. It was written in her father's eyes, and reflected in her mother's face.
"That was really good, Mom. May I show the braid pattern I came up with today?" she asked politely pushing her empty dish a quarter inch away from her.
"Sure," her parents said in unison. She brought it out and Hiccup gasped. His mother had shown him the design she now showed him years before she had been born. Could it be that the pattern was a family trademark? It certainly seemed that way.
"Oh that's beautiful, sweetie. Don't you think so?" Astrid asked.
"Well I like it, I wasn't really thinking of anything in particular when I was making it. I was just talking while I braided," she said, hoping they wouldn't ask whom she was speaking to.
Of course, they did. "Oh? Who were you talking to?' Hiccup asked.
"Uh," she said. She faked a yawn, hoping she would be dismissed from the table. "No one in particular, why?"
"Oh no reason. Maybe you should go to bed soon, honey. You look tired," she heard her father say as he finished his plate of food.
Speranza waited until the sound of her parent's bickering continued before she snuck out the window. Sliding silently to the ground below, she slunk through the growing darkness, silent and agile as a cat on the prowl. She reached the beach that her father usually met the other man at and crouched behind the lone bush that was on the edge of the sand. It allowed enough light in that she could see, but not so much that they could see her. If she was right, tonight Hiccup would need her help. A bitter wind arose as she waited, sapping all warmth from her bones.
"Speranza! What are you doing here?" Hiccup hissed at her when he found her huddled in the bush.
"I wanted to make sure you were okay, Daddy. I've watched you and that man speak before," she whispered back tears standing out in her eyes. "I'm sorry for not telling you before, Daddy. I'm just scared. I don't want to lose you."
Hiccup sighed and opened his mouth to reply when the sound of oars cutting through the water alerted them of approaching ships. "Stay there, no matter what, sweety. Promise me?"
"Promise. I love you, Daddy," she murmured.
"I-," Hiccup began. A boat running aground grabbed his attention, and he whipped around, striding in great lengths to meet the approaching hulking figure. "Drago."
"Dragon Master," the man's voice sent chills down her spine. "You've brought what I demanded I assume."
"I-I couldn't get it for you," her father's voice told her of his fear. "I tried, honestly, I did. I couldn't find what you requested. Ugh!" Drago's fist connected with Hiccup's stomach hard. It was clear it was a pulled punch, else Hiccup would not have survived. Speranza stifled a cry behind both hands. She even pinched her nose to quell the scream that rose in her throat. Forcing herself to stay still, she could only watch as her father was beaten.
"Hiccup!" her mother cried charging from the forest.
"Astrid, no!" cried the injured chief.
The next few moments were a blur to the young girl. Her mother threw punches and kicks left, right and center, wounding or immobilizing enemies wherever her blows landed. All of a sudden her foot slipped, giving Drago just the opening he needed to deal a vicious kick that sent Astrid sprawling. He picked her up by her braid, coaxing a scream from the brave young woman. He laughed as he brought a knife down and slit her throat.
"NO!!!!" Hiccup and Speranza screamed at the same time. The larger man dropped Astrid, knowing she wouldn't last. Hiccup crawled over to her and took her in his arms. Her killer turned and gathered his men back onto the ship, leaving behind a soon-to-be widower, and young motherless daughter. Speranza picked her way out of the bush, running over to where her mother lay dying.
"Both of you have to promise me one thing," Astrid choked out. They stared at her, tears rushing down their faces. "Promise you won't blame each other. Don't let Berk fall to ruin. Always remember that I-" She coughed up a lungful of blood "-I love you both, very much."
"I-I promise, Astrid," Hiccup whispered.
"Me too, Momma," her daughter sobbed.
"We love you too," they said through their strangled throats. Astrid closed her eyes, and exhaled her last dying breath.
The soft thump of a body hitting the floor woke Speranza out of a restless slumber. Crawling out of bed she peeked downstairs and saw her father slumped over on the floor. He'd passed out drunk again. Toothless was nudging him to get up, but he was dead to the world. Sighing, she came down the stairs and lugged her father over to his bed, preparing to clean him up like she'd done almost every night for the past five years. She looked out the door, which was still wide open, and judged by starlight that it was around three o'clock in the morning.
Toothless and Izzy watched as Hiccup's pants and underwear were removed, his body cleaned, and a cool, damp sheet laid over him. The dragons exchanged looks before Izzy returned upstairs to go back to sleep. Speranza went over to a door and carved some fresh ice from the block. She put it into her father's mug and left it on his bedside table. She also left him a few medicinal leaves which would alleviate the headache and hangover from his nightly routine of drinking.
That finished, she whisked up to bed as quietly as she could. Curling up beneath her still-warm blankets, she drifted off to sleep, knowing her father would be fine until the next night, when he would come home wasted again. Since losing her mother five years prior, Speranza had turned to an ancient artform called Tai chi, which involved the smooth, fluid motions of the body in ways that eased the mind and healed the spirit. She practiced and performed it each morning as the sun rose.

((A note: Berk is doing just fine, Hiccup hasn't entirely abandoned it, in fact he tries to work as long as he can to avoid going back to the home he'd once shared with Astrid. Notice how I said Speranza sighed? She's going to leave him a note that says something along the lines of "I don't need a chief anymore, I need my father back. I miss you, Dad, please don't forget what Mom said. I miss her too, she was my best friend before I met Izzy."))
Speranza was up really early that morning. She didn't know what time it was, only that it was time to get up. She rose, stretched, and yawned, scratching her back. She looked downstairs at her father's sleeping figure and went over to her desk. Picking up a charcoal and a piece of paper, she wrote a letter.
I've been taking care of you for five years. I know you miss Mom; I do too! But she wouldn't want us to be suffering like this. Berk doesn't need a father anymore than I need you to only be a chief. I need my father back. People have been coming up to me asking for my help with chiefing duties. I'm getting tired of performing duties that I am not cut out for, and cleaning you up every night. If you wondered why you wake up with a sheet over you, your pants off, and your peg-leg off too, that's why. Please, I'm begging you. Don't turn away from me! Mom wanted you to LEAD Berk, not father it. She wanted us to remember her, but to move on.
Looking forward to your answer.
She rolled the bundle up, tied it with a string, and left it by her father's mug. She grabbed her slip-on shoes, and headed out the door, Izzy in tow. They reached the platform where she performed her morning ritual. Two sun salutations, followed by exaggerated movements that flowed smoothly together, as the wind and the waves do during a storm. She lifted a leg in the crane pose, bringing the knee to her chest. Pivoting so her leg was parallel to her arms, which she held out to the sides for balance, she slowly lowered her foot so it touched the ground gently before making an arc in the dirt. She brought the foot behind her, moving with the rhythm she'd learned to feel over the past five years. As she finished her final move, the sun peeked over the horizon, outlining her flowing form in a very dramatic lighting.
Back at home, Hiccup woke up and found his daughter's note. He thought back through the years and felt ashamed. He pulled on his clean pants, and found his peg-leg sitting in a cleaning solution that had already taken care of the vomit and excrement on it. Slipping that on, he yawned and rubbed his face with both hands. Toothless was up and glaring at him.
"What? Did I do something wrong?" he asked. Toothless grumbled something under his breath. Hiccup didn't understand a word of what he said, but he did get the basic message. You've let your daughter down, and you've let me down. What's worse, is that if Astrid were here right now, what would she say? She'd be so disappointed in you! Get up, get dressed, and go find your daughter. Apologize for being so absent and promise her that you'll be there for her. She needs her father, not some drunken fool who comes home every night and passes out after soiling his pants like an infant! He hung his head and stared down at the floorboards beneath his feet. "I know, I know. I'm a terrible person. Where is she, Toothless? Where's my little Hope?" With a huff the Night Fury lead his rider to the bluff where Speranza was just finishing her routine.
ripley. they/them pronouns.
The crunch of dirt under metal made her turn from the sunrise and look over her shoulder. Hiccup was standing about ten feet away, watching her and the sight beyond. She went over to him and he knelt down and embraced her. They both began to cry as the ache of how far apart they'd grown as father and daughter became aparent. Toothless and Izzy exchanged knowing looks, pleased with their progress.
"I'm so sorry, honey for making you take care of me all these years," Hiccup wept bitterly.
"It's okay, Daddy. I'm sorry for putting up with it this long," she replied through her tears.
"Can you ever forgive me for abandoning you?" he asked. She pulled back slightly to see his face. Brushing away his tears as he'd done for her she smiled through her tears.
"Of course. I can even show you how I've been coping with losing Mom," she said leading him by the hand over to the flat ground. She began demonstrating the basic moves, guiding her father through them. "THe first and foremost thing to remember when performing Tai chi, is to be smooth and flowing, like a river. It may pick up speed and drop, but it always returns to the steady, constant rhythm. Now, try it again, but this time do it much quicker and smoother. Picture your body like a club balanced on the skinny end, keept the club balanced, and you'll be a master of Tai chi in no time." When they finished, they turned back toward the village and watched it wake up. Climbing on Toothless, Hiccup looked back over his shoulder at his daughter, and for a moment, saw Astrid standing beside her, smiling with pride.
"Alright, folks. There's gonna be some changes around here," Hiccup announced standing at the podium. "First and foremost, I'd like to apologize for my behavior as of late. It has been uncalled for, unnecessary, crude, and just plain wrong. I am proud to announce that I have sufficiently recovered enough to resume the chiefing duties I have severely neglected these past five years. If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to come see me directly. That is all, thank you for your time."
The crowd that had gathered when he took center stage cheered loudly at his words. Snotlout met his eye and nodded. Annitta, his wife, had been giving Speranza lessons in Tai Chi to help her cope, and through her Hiccup recieved the same healing.
"Speranza! Speranza! I need you to get your father! Something's come up and we can't find him," a large Viking hollered running up to her with his bushy beard parting with the wind.
"Alright, just a moment. I'll go get him," she sighed mounting Izzy. She smiled as she thought of her father performing Tai Chi with her that morning. He'd moved up to an even more difficult level and was doing well with it, performing many of the moves with little or no effort. She found her father on a patrol with Toothless. She explained the situation and lead them to the fretful Viking.
"My wife doesn't look so good, sir. I fear," he sighed. "I fear she may not live. Gothi's with her now, but it don't look good."
Hiccup forced the flashback of Astrid as she lay dying in his arms to the back of his mind. Now was not the time for his own personal pain. It was time to act using the best of his abilities as chief. He wasn't a grieving husband, he was a compassionate leader. "Don't worry. No matter what happens, your wife won't suffer long," the chief said confidently.
They arrived at the man's house just as Gothi was leaving. Inside a woman's pained screams reached their ears, driving stakes of earsplitting noise through their skulls. Speranza looked up at her father as he strode into the building, the man in tow. Toothless hung back if only to protect his ears, which he had permenantly plastered to his skull, head hung low to dull the noise slightly. She put a hand on the large expanse of black scales just as the agonized cries took a sharp increase then ceased altogether. Hiccup emerged and walked off, staring at the ground. The door swung open on its hinges and she saw the man on his knees sobbing quietly beside his wife's still body.
Gothi shook her head, expression sullen and downcast. She tapped Speranza on the shoulder and began writing in the dirt.
The woman had severe colic. In infants it's treatable, but in adults it means almost certain death. Your parents came to me when you had an even worse case as a newborn, she wrote. They feared you wouldn't make it. I knew you would, though. I never doubted. You have your father's drive for life, his gentle heart, his love of dragons, and your grandfather's understanding and leadership skills.
"Who was my grandfather?" she asked. Gothi pointed at the statue she often sat under. "Wait a minute, Stoick the Vast is my grandfather?" The ancient woman nodded and blinked in a very owl-like manner. Toothless averted his gaze from the monument of the great chief, ashamed of what he'd done decades ago.
WOW! your doing AWESOME! your really talented. keep it up!
"Evening, Alpha," Izzy greeted him, startling him from his thoughts. The Changewing curled her tail around Toothless' tailfins, taking care not to poke herself on the few metal points of the prosthetic. "What are you thinking, Toothless?"
"Oh, uh... Just thinking about the last big battle I was in," he replied quickly, bowing his head to look at his paws.
"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked dipping her head respectfully. She lifted her head and reached around into the saddlebags that Hiccup had put on his daughter's saddle at her request, and removed a large halibut, placing it at his feet. "I forgot to give you this a while ago. It was the biggest I could catch without being half-drowned in the process."
He slurped it down quickly, fighting against the flashbacks. "I-I think it's time you knew what happened to the great Stoick the Vast, chief before your rider's father. Hiccup's dad was the chief prior to him, and he might have gone on chiefing, had it not been for me," he said quietly, his voice trailing off.
"Huh?" she said staring at him. "What do you mean had it not been for you?"
He sighed and stood up. "Follow me," he said. She obeyed, unsure of what to think. He lead her to the Cove where he and Hiccup first bonded all those years ago. He sighed again and lay down on a sun-baked rock. Izzy curled up on a smaller one, lifting her head so she could watch him. "Years ago, back when Stoick was alive, he wanted Hiccup, my rider, to succeed him. Don't ask, the humans have a very complex hierchy that I have a hard time understanding. Well Hiccup didn't want to be chief, he wanted to explore the world. One day as we were exploring, we met another rider, who turned out to be his long-lost mother. She'd been rescuing dragons for twenty years, the whole time everyone thought she was dead. Long story short, Stoick was very happy to see her and her dragon sanctuary, and asked her to come back to Berk. She accepted with a bit of coaxing from yours truly, and then we all noticed a troubling sight: the dragons in the nest flying off to defend it. An evil human named Drago Bludvist was attacking, intent on drawing out our at the time Alpha, which he did. After a brief battle between our Alpha and his Alpha, our Bewilderbeest was struck down and killed, making the Dark One leader. He took control of me and ordered me to ki-kill," his voice faltered at the memory, "Hiccup. I fought within myself a great battle which I lost. Hiccup would have died had it not been for his father. Stoick knocked his son aside just as I fired a large blast. When I was finally released from the control, my first thought was, 'what have I done?' My next thought was, 'Stoick! Are you okay?' When I nudged his hand, my rider pushed me away, demanding me away. I tried to make him understand I didn't mean it, but he looked so angry at me. I didn't mean to, Hiccup. I'm sorry," he whimpered, lost in thought. Izzy rose to her feet and went over to him, grooming the top of his head with her long tongue, and calming him down as he rode out the storm inside him.
((Listen to this song as you're reading this, it makes it more emotionally charged. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmWw16GYg7k&hd=1#! ))
Speranza was on her way home from the plateau she had performed Tai Chi at since her mother died five and a half years previous when the sound of voices caught her attention. Being the naturally curious and nosy teen she was, she crept closer to listen, silently moving through the frosty grass.
"So you're sure this will work?" someone whispered.
"Positive. By dawn tomorrow, the chief will be dead, and so will his precious pet," another voice hissed.
"And what of Speranza? Won't she suspect?" a familiar voice asked.
"Oh, Drago, you worry too much. That kid will be the main suspect. She did take over when her father was moping about his wife's death," replied the second voice. Speranza put a hand over her mouth and gasped. Someone was plotting to kill her father, and Toothless! She had to warn them, and quickly.
Suddenly, a Terrible Terror started singing above her head, drawing attention to it. Drawing attention to her. She slipped out of the bush, and around the tree she was backed up against, silently praying to the gods for help. A wild boar grunted and charged into the clearing in the opposite direction from where she was, and she sighed with relief when the men moved in to kill it.
She darted away from the hostile group and dashed to her father as he came home from work. She hugged him tightly, chest heaving from her panicked run.
"Well it's good to see you too, sweetie. Why the unexpected hug attack? You're acting as if you had a dream I was dead or something," he joked, not realizing just how critical the situation really was.
"Daddy, I overheard something," she panted, "as I was on my way here. Someone's planning on killing you, and Toothless tonight! And someone named Dargo is a part of their plot."
"Drago? Are you sure you didn't hear 'Dagur' which is similar to it, but different because Dagur is an old enemy of mine, whereas I still have a score to settle with Drago?" he asked sitting her down beside him.
She shook her head. "No, I heard pretty clearly. Here's exactly what I heard, 'By dawn tomorrow, the chief will be dead, and so will his precious pet.' Sounds like a plot to me, Dad," she said after a moment of recovering.
Hiccup fell silent, as he sometimes did when he was thinking about Astrid. He blinked as if waking from a long sleep, and looked down at her. He wrapped her in his arms and held her close.
"Thank you for telling me. This is a very serious accusation, honey. Have you seen either of our dragons today?" he inquired.
"I think I saw them heading into the forest. Toothless looked like he was going to be sick, while Izzy seemed a bit anxious, why?" she returned. There was a scratching at the door. Opening it, they saw the missing reptiles returning from the walk they'd taken in the woods.
Izzy immediately went over to Speranza, murmuring in concern. She'd overheard the plot as well, as had Toothless. They were incredibly upset about it and pushed themselves under their riders. The Changewing and her rider whisked up the stairs and pulled out the dummies they'd made years ago, when Astrid was still alive. Then they snuffed out the fire on the way out the door, after positioning the fakes in natural positions. Not long after they were safely out of the village, a huge explosion rocked Berk and sent a fiery mushroom cloud into the night sky, illuminating everything in an eerie light. Together, father and daughter watched the destruction unfold as citizens awoke to find their chief and his family, along with the Alpha, dead. Or so they thought.
Drago revealed himself and addressed the gathering. "Your chief is dead again. As is your Alpha. You will all listen to me, now," he screamed in a very harsh voice. He sounded as if he had just gotten out of an extremely smoky room after breathing in the air for an absurdly long time.
"Don't you mean, they'll listen to me? If not for my armada, you wouldn't have gotten onto Berk so easily," said a man who's voice she recognized as the second speaker.
"Dagur," Hiccup growled. "Looks like we'll be rid of two issues tonight, right, Bud?" Toothless growled viciously. He and Izzy exchanged looks and she slipped out from under Speranza, flying off to Changewing Island for reinforcements. A cloud of twenty or thirty dragons arrived a few moments later, landing beside the Alpha and bowing respectfully. The chief's daughter's pet slid under her again, purring a disrespectful comment about the two bickering conquorers. Toothless gave his throaty laugh, which the others followed. Below the bluff they were hiding behind, the villagers were giving a series of cries. Some were weeping for Hiccup and Speranza. Others were growling their discontent. Most were glaring at their invaders in silent rage, as tears streamed down their cheeks.
A small figure was dragged to the front and forced to his knees. Speranza cried out softly when she recognized Jonah. A sword was raised and the young boy still cried out valiantly, "Berk will never surrender! Our chief may be dead, but you will never capture our Viking spirits!"
"Brave young lad," Hiccup remarked. "I can see why you like him." She blushed.

The swordwielder swung at Jonah's head, intent on severing it. Just a few seconds before it touched him, however, he was lifted clean off the ground by an unseen force. Dagur and Drago deadpanned when the youth was snatched up by seemingly nothing.
"Good job, Izzy," Speranza said approvingly as Jonah was deposited behind the chief. His silouette stood out against the moon that rose, round like a wheel, and white as snow. Startled cries as people began to realize that Hiccup had survived circulated through the village. The young Viking sat up, looking at her in disbelief.
"But-but you-The house i-i-it," he stammered.
"All an illusion. I told you those dummies would be worth it someday, Dad," said Hiccup's daughter with her hands on her hips. Beneath her, Izzy wriggled and squirmed in anticipation. Toothless gave a command, and all unbonded Changewings fazed into invisibility before charging into the village. Before anyone could react, thirty wild dragons had surrounded the entire Berserker armada, and Bludvist's few men. Speranza spoke up, shouting so she would be heard. "One wrong move, and those Changewings will shoot you with acid that eats through anything. Don't believe me? Try it out."
Hiccup stood up on Toothless. His voice carried well because of its baritone underlay as he said, "Drago, Dagur, you two have been no end of trouble. I'm giving you both one chance to give up or flee. Should you choose to flee, know this: If you ever come back and try to harm Berk, or its people again, I will hunt you down, and I will kill you." The dragons growled to emphasize his point. A tense stand-off followed his ultimatum.
Dagur and his armada made as if to leave, and were pleasently surprised when the dragons stepped aside to let them pass. One of the younger dragons growled and made a small, mean rush at the men as they passed. A man shrieked like a young girl, jumping into his commrades arms like a frightened woman. They got into their ships and left Berk.
Drago and his men stayed, refusing to give up, denying the right to back down. His men glanced around nervously at the circle of dragons and threw their hands up in surrender and allowed themselves to be escorted out by a few Changewings, whose glaring eyes and hissing mouths were enough to keep the prisoners in line.
Oh my goodness, I can imagine the soldier jumping so well! Hahaha! This is awsome!

"I could light the world with my fire, but I'd rather watch you try and do it yourself. Less work for me, more learning opprotunities for you." ~ Peony

"It takes strength to fly, dear cousin, but it takes grace to float!" ~ Crysanthemum
Titals: Emma the Artistic, Emma the Insane
Age: 15 (almost 16)
Long golden brown hair, tied back into a tight ponytail, with large hazel eyes and long eyelashes. Her skin is tanned, and almost always stained with soot, paint, or gunpowder. Out in public, she wears a pink t-shirt with an armored fur skirt and brown fuzzy boots, and has a surplus of satchels and belt pouches, along with a battered black helmet with curled horns. When working, she wears a leather apron with her hair tied into a bun and a white tunic with leather breeches under it. Has a black tattoo shaped like a celtic knot on her left collar bone.
One part genius, two parts mad scientist, and all artistic curiousity, Emma is nothing if not interesting. When she was little, she had a fascination with how dragons breathed fire, even when they were attacking the village. When her parents were killed in the Red Death attack, it only served to stoke the fires of her inventive mind, leading her to invent near impossible machines so to better defend her home and everyone she holds dear. Unfortunately, Emma is also a bit of a pyromaniac, and has a dangerous attraction to explosives. This causes her Fellow Berkians to give her a wide berth, and ultimately leads her to isolate herself entirely from the village. She wants to be accepted for who she is, and not ridiculed for creative impulsives she cannot always control.
Abilities: Swordsman, scientific genius and stratagist, dragon trainer, always keeps explosives on hand.

Bouncies by Hattori!
My dragons, Peony and Spindleheart!
Breed: Monstrous Nightmare (Southern)
Appearance: Chocolate brown, with Hot-Pink details and a pale pink underbelly. Has a small scar at the end of her tail from Dagur the Deranged's axe.
Was born on the Island of Crete, but escaped when Drago Bludvist took her flock. Eventually made her way to Berk, where she was captured and put in the Academy. Emma was the only one who could get through to her, after one of Hiccup's attempts at training her went wrong. Ever since, the two have been like sisters. She is hot tempered, stubborn, and ferocious, giving her a rotten reputation amoung the villagers, but she also hides a nuturing and over-protective maternal instinct when it comes to her rider and her adoptive "Nephew", Spindle. She and Nina Haddock's Deadly Nadder, Darrien, have a competitive friendship, but she distrusts any other dragon or rider, especialy Stormfly and Astrid. She also has a grudge against Hiccup, but she'll follow his orders when they make sense.
Abilities: Copy-Cat fighting, glowing pink patterns, the usual bursting into flames
Status: Warrior of her small flock

(Edit by Sephira)
Name: Spindleheart, though often just Spindle
Breed: Whispering Death
Stormy gray scales, with turquoise spines and a sunset orange underbelly. Wears a set of headgear that resembles goggles.
Was found underneath Berk as an egg, along with two other eggs. Hiccup, knowing Emma had little to no fear of Whispering Deaths, entrusted one of the eggs to her, after much reassurance that she'd take good care of it. Spindle's personality is shy, sweet, and adorably awkward, with little to no social skills. He often has trouble speaking to the other Whispers he was found with, and is deathly afraid of Hiccup's new Whisper, Shredder. Not knowing any other family, he maintains a stubborn belief that Emma is his mother and Peony his aunt (though he can't really say her name right, so he always calls her "Auntie PeeNee"), even as he discovers his past and lineage. Being slightly more sensitive to sunlight than most, Emma made him a pair of tinted goggles so he can fly during the day. He's an overachiever, and always gets depressed at his poor racing skills, but excells at target and shooting games, thank's to Peony's patient training.
Abilities: Spine-Shot, Tail-Whip, Drilling, very good swimmer
Status: Scout of his small flock

Hong Taiyang (紅太陽), or "Red Sun"
This dragon is very proud, strict, ordered, and often acts like a bit of a snob... okay, maybe a lot of a snob. But he's also very willing to learn, and knows how to read and understand several languages. He enjoys watching things be created, and loves the structure of the scientific process. He will sometimes give you a message written in a foreign language and watch intently while ou try to puzzle out the translation.
Oriental Serpentfang by NightmareRebuff!
Cold and emotionless, Deathknight is a sadistic maniac who makes Dagur look like Sigmund Freud. He doesn’t care about anyone or anything except inflicting suffering and sustaining his own existence. He’s become a bit of a boogeyman: a nightmarish creature that stalks the deep forests in winter, toying with it’s prey, then ripping it to shreds or dragging it back to it’s lair to kill slowly and painfully. It’s hard to believe such a vicious dragon could have a shred of honor, but he does. If someone manages to defeat him in battle, Deathknight actually won’t attack that person/dragon again if they venture into his territory, but don’t expect him not to destroy you if you try and take him on a second time…

To Be Continued...
Drago uttered a deep, guttural growl when Hiccup and Toothless landed, Speranza and Izzy not too far behind. "You! I watched you burn!" he roared.
"I'm like my Dad, it takes more than fire to kill me!" the chief snarled in return. "Surrender, Drago. Your men have given up, your armada has fled as well. You are completely alone."
"I will never surrender. Especially not to some scrawnbag chief of some scummy tribe! You don't deserve the mantle you bear," yelled he. "Nor have you earned the right to ride your dragon. He at least deserves someone who has been in worse battles than you, oh noble Chief," he bowed mockingly low. Speranza felt her mother's fighting spirit coil like a snake within her, ready to strike. All it would take was one wrong move or word from the intruder to set her off. Hiccup apparently sensed this, for he turned around and looked over his shoulder at her. He batted his hand in their, "Deep Breaths" signal.
She sucked in a break through her nostrils, and slowly let it out through her mouth. It did little to calm her fury. Remembering a tactic her mother had told her, she closed her eyes and counted slowy to ten. The snake settled down for the time being, at least. Without warning, Drago used Hiccup's distraction to charge him. He didn't even know what hit him until Drago's boot stepped on his chest, pinning him to the ground. At that moment, the tension of rage in her stomach snapped like a worn-out rope.
This, she thought. This is what I've been training for. All those childhood skirmishes with Jugraina, were practice for this fight. Now or never, give it everything you have, hold nothing back. "Ragh!!" she cried charging Drago and catching him in the gut with a headbut. After his initial shock, he picked her up as if she were a ragdoll, dangling her by her throat four feet above the ground. Her lips began to turn blue.
"No!" Hiccup screamed. Before he could react, Speranza had somehow twisted her legs and was kicking Drago's face repeatedly, as he had sometimes seen Astrid do when she was alive.
Drago's triumphant grin turned quickly into a grimace as she wrenched his wrist like a crocodile doing a deathroll, twisting this way and that trying to get free. His arm snapped loudly, leaving behind no doubt that it was broken. His scream shattered the night sky, making half the dragons cringe or whine piteously. Still she didn't stop, she couldn't rest until her fury had been spent. Her father knew this and so only watched and prayed that his daughter wouldn't make a slip. As Hiccup watched, he realized with a start that nothing she did was sharp or jagged. She was actually using her Tai Chi to fight and destroy her enemy, the one who had killed her mother, who had threatened her father, and who had dared try to hurt Jonah, the boy she loved.
Twenty minutes later, after she had beaten Drago unconscious, her anger left her with bloody fists, trembling from the sheer force of her rage. Approaching cautiously, but also smoothly, Hiccup placed a gentle hand on his daughter's shoulder. He took her in his arms as she collapsed from exhaustion. He looked down at her tenderly, remembering when she had been a wee babe, wrapped in a thick, woolly blanket lined with the finest lapin Trader Johan could find. She had been so small and frail, nothing like the budding young woman he now held in his arms. She made a small noise and fell asleep, cuddled in her father's arms as she had as an infant.
A tear fell from his eyes as he looked at his little girl while a smile stretched across his lips as he admired her ferocity in battle.
Hiccup stood up, Speranza still in his arms, and walked to where the house would have been and stopped.
"Oh, right. The house was destroyed," he muttered to himself.
"My neighbor's house is uninhabited, sir," Jonah said. "They moved out when they had the triplets."
"Would you mind leading us there so she and I have a safe place to sleep?" he responded.
"Of course, Chief. Follow me," he said guiding them to the vacant building. Inside was practically a replica of the chieftains residence, except the fire pit was off to one side. That wall was made of rock, as it was butted up against a large boulder that jutted out from the bedrock. It's massive size made it impossible to move, so a house was built next to it with the idea of expanding it.
((Sorry for the short post everyone, I'm spending a few days with my family and will be spending as much time as possible with them. I have a seven year old cousin who is just a bundle of energy (oh to have half that stamina) therefore hard to shake. I have her set up in her grandfather's living room watching How to Train Your Dragon, the first movie. Personally I don't know if she's quite ready to watch the second movie quite yet as it's quite graphic.))
I agree. Httyd 2 is pretty tough, even though it's an animation. Nice work, i love it. i have a question, Where did you come up with the name "Jonah"? Where did you get the idea? everytime i read it i think of Jonas from The Giver.
Jonah, if you rearrange some of the letters goes from "Jonah" to "Johann" like the Trader. Besides, it's a cute name and I was in a hurry. I had this stuff prewritten when I started posting it. I couldn't exactly say "The unknown boy she loved approached her" could i?
No of course! i was just curious! it took me a very long time to come up with a name for the lover of the main character in a book im writing, (i havnt posted it yet.) I finaly came up with Brenton..
I think you mihgt want to add a spoiler warning to chapter 27. :)
When Speranza woke up the next morning, her father came up the stairs with breakfast. A plate of salmon and chicken skin, her absolute favorite part of chicken.
"Morning, sweetie. How are you feeling?" he asked gently, sitting on the side of her bed and brushing a stray hair from her face.
"I feel...strange. It's a good strange, a peaceful feeling. I always think of my anger as a snake, coiling ready to strike when someone says something," she said. I don't feel it anymore. I really like it." She smiled at him. He pulled out a damp rag and began washing her hands of Drago's blood. "What exactly happened? I only remember that man, Drago I think it was, stepping on your chest and pinning you to the ground. After than I don't remember anything."
"Um," Hiccup said glancing behind him at Toothless and Izzy, who had come up the stairs. "You went absolutely crazy, beating Drago until he was unconscious. You didn't do anything sharp or sudden, it was all smooth and flowing. It was weird, but soothing at the asme time." When her hands were cleaned, Hiccup gave her the tray of food, and scooted toward the foot of her bed while she ate. His eyes never strayed from her. She polished the plates in a matter of moments, so savage was her hunger. He brought out a disc of inedible bread and gave it to her. He cleared his throat when she finished that too. "Jonah's here to see you. He's been waiting all night. Would you like to see him now?"
"Uh, sure. Send him up," she said self-consciously patting down her unruly mop. Jonah came upstairs with another bouquet of flowers. "Jonah, you're spoiling me!" she jokingly cried. He hung back a few feet, unsure if she was kidding or not. She threw the covers and approached him quickly. Before he could react, she wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged his startled figure. He glanced at Hiccup and the dragons. When they nodded he returned her embrace. To both their surprise, Hiccup also encircled them in his arms.
"How lucky can I be that my daughter saved not only me but the boy she-" Hiccup started to say.
"Okay, Dad. That's enough stories from you," Speranza said quickly. She blushed in spite of her interruption, and so did Jonah, though he didn't know why. Hiccup released the pair from his embrace and held his daughter at arms length.
"Alright, I'll leave it for now. Are you ready to see the village?" he asked, flashing the charming smile she hadn't seen since before her mother's death. She showed her own teeth in a returned smile before nodding. "Let's go then. Do you feel strong enough?"
"Of course, Daddy," she said quietly, wrapping her arms around his waist. They remained like that for a few beats then released each other and headed downstairs. Jonah and Hiccup went outside first, then Speranza did, feeling her shyness creep up again. A crowd was gathering around as she stood blinking in the sudden brightness.
"Hey look! It's Speranza!" someone called. Someone else clapped her on the shoulder with enough force to make her stagger. Izzy hissed at the person and nosed her protectively. She giggled and stroked her nose before wrapping her arms around the Changewing's neck.
After the crowd dispersed, a few teens stayed behind and they all went walking in the forest, bringing Izzy with them for protection.
"So, do you think you could teach us how to fight like that?" a young girl, Ruffnut and Fishlegs' daughter, asked. "My father says that your father ended a war that was going on for three hundred years between us and the dragons. He said that's why the chief has a metal leg. I think it's really cool!"
"Well, I don't know...It's kinda hard, and will require a lot of practice and diligence, but if you keep it up, you'll learn to integrate your training into your everyday life," Speranza said. She lead them all up to the plateau where she and her father practiced every morning. She guided them through each pose and explained the importance of breathing. A thought occured to her. "How would you guys feel about forming a secret group? We'd only fight when someone threatened the peace, and if the Riders couldn't fix the issue, but do you think you guys would be interested?"
"I'd love to!" came the reply from four teens.
"What would we call ourselves though? Hmmm..." Jonah asked. "How about 'The Crime Fighters?' We'd fight the crime that threatened the freedom, or peace."
"That's a bit of a casual name, and it would also be difficult to keep secret. At let's keep it a secret until we figure out a name. Even then, let's not tell anyone until we have absolute necessity, okay?" she suggested.
"Sounds good." "Yeah, that's fair." "Mmm..." This with a nod. Something Jonah said kept ringing and bouncing around in her head. Fighters...Freedom....Fighters...Freedom. Fighters. Freedom Fighters!
"I have a brilliant idea of what our group could be called: Freedom Fighters! Just think about it: everyone's trapped, including our dragons and our parents. All hope seems lost until a masked group of five bearing capes, and masks decorated with highly stylized letters of the name of our crew, comes in and kicks the enemy's backside off Berk and makes them fear the name Chaos again!" she finished triumphantly.
