Fan-Fic Friday on Wednesday.  XD

Posting this chapter for last week with chapter 11 coming on actually Friday this week.

Not much happens in this chapter.  Then again, there is something that is important, but not at the moment.  So comment on how big of an impact you think it will be.

Hope you enjoy the chapter. :)

Chapter 10

Past History

“I suppose I should,” Annett agreed.

Settling down in a chair, the others did as well also on benches, we listened in anticipation for Annett’s adventures.

However, I did want to do something before we got started.  I stood back up to walk over to the back door.

“I am thinking I should have tracked him, but I was so dazed and fazed in the moment that it did not even register to go after him,” I thought aloud.  “By now the guy could be long gone and in practically any direction, so tracking him on foot or even by air would be difficult either way.  But I was thinking I could at least set Smoky on his trail.”

Seeing how Terrible Terrors are not a tracking dragon, because they are of the Stroker variety, my family had to actually train Smoky to track things; all he needed at the very least is a whiff of some smell from something we had or a scent from a footprint.  So I dragon-called Smoky to come, a couple of minutes later he flew in, landing at my feet.

When Smoky got a whiff of the intruder’s scent, even before I pointed it out to the Terror, I gave him the command to follow the trail.

One would think it would have to be a sophisticated command.  All it is comes out to be is me pointing at the footprint and telling him to follow it.

There are a few prints out the back door, yet further after that they are indistinguishable from the other footprints of walking traffic.  There is one good foot print to go off of, so that is all Smoky needed.

Normally when it has not rained or snowed the dust would hardly be enough to make out any kind of print; seeing how the impression of someone’s footprint would need to be in an one-half inch to inch of material that would form around the foot and make the print, reason being how tracks in snow or mud after it has rained are clearly visible.  Although if someone steps in loose dirt or enough dust the print would also be clear but not as good as some of the others; thankfully the guy stepped out of the normal walkway and on one of Annett’s Daisies.

“Are you coming or not?” demanded Asvord.

I quickly said in defense, “I’m comin’, I’m comin’.”

I walked back over and pulled up the chair I was sitting in before.

I stated, “Now you may begin.”

Annett grinned and nodded her head, “Thank you kindly.”

“As you all now, my brothers and I are not from Berk, but a far away island down to the south.  The weather down there has fewer months of snow, but more months of stormy weather; so not much of a trade off.  Anyway, the diary that I was going to show you guys today was a day-to-day account of what happened during the time of our forced family separation.  Now the first couple of ‘chapters’ or years were nothing big: Just random, everyday things that happened.  One of the reason why I did keep diary’s of all the things I did, and I still do keep an account, was because I was the main scroll keeper for our home for the same reason.  It just came natural to me to keep a diary or list of everything that happened.”

Annett continued, “Now that the back-story is out of the way, a brief recap of what happened with my family separating.  Clan and island held hostage by a band of renegade vikings.  Clan wants them to leave and stop plundering their island.  People get restless, including Vemund.  Vemund chooses to get rid of the vikings by any means necessary.  Renegade vikings want priceless clan artifact.  Vemund helps them as his head was filled with the idea of treasures and gold.  Ironically, clan leaders want Adam to find who stole artifact.  Adam has good idea Vemund is involved based on recent behavior.  Adam finds out what Vemund is doing and tries to stop him.  Vemund sways Adam to help him get rid of the renegade vikings.  Adam helped his brother because he is family and because of me and the rest of his clan, even if it means committing treason.  Vemund is too deep involved, so Adam lets him escape with the renegade vikings.  Adam turns himself in.  Clan leaders take action against Adam committing treason.  However, they understand the place Adam was put in: Choose between protecting family and clan or total loss of family and clan as the renegade vikings were going to attack the island the next day.  But, since treason was committed, according to law, action must be taken.  Banishment from island is agreed upon.  Adam leaves his home, yet everyone including the clan leaders set Adam on his way with plenty of previsions and supplies for him to live out on his own.  As he leaves, I give him Pebbles who came from Jewel’s litter which she recently had.  I stay behind heartbroken.  Everywhere I went, I am reminded of my brothers.  After a few years, I then leave.  I couldn’t bear to stay there when my brothers are gone.  I take it upon myself to reunite our family and start over.   I gave away the rest of Jewel’s litter, four kittens, and then leave my home island.  The clan also understood and set me on my just as they did my brother.  I then go on my quest to find my brothers.”

“Now that we have reviewed all of that, finally we get to the part that is interesting you all.  I’ll try to keep this short as well, but still with the necessary or important details.” Annett declares.      My sisters and I readjusted in our seats in eagerness.

Annett started, “I had already traveled the seas around my island, so I knew of a few places; but since my quest was to find my brothers, I would have to go out into the unknown.  Well, at least unknown to me.  I had my maps and instruments needed to sail the route I set.  My father taught me all he knew about sailing and traversing the water, so it wasn’t like I couldn’t hold my own; I knew what I was doing.  Father also taught my two brothers too… but he taught me some things he didn’t teach them.  He was found of the sons, but when he had a daughter, things changed.  My brothers tell me that my father went from a rough and tough-minded sailor… to what a father should be.  My brothers even tell me that I actually changed father’s perspective towards them as well as mother.”

          “It’s true,” Vemund interjected.

Annett went on, “My heading starting going west as I went to the few port islands that were around mainly to stop to see if Vemund or Adam had gone through.  Because it had already been two or three years since Adam and Vemund had gone, it was a longer shot if someone still remembered them coming and passing by.  After stopping by the first two islands with not such success, I went to the last island that I had been to as a little girl hoping I would find something… I was ready to take anything at that point.  A couple of the families remembered me once I explained where I came from… mainly because I told them about dad, though they hardly recognized me for it had been several years and I had grown up.  Thankfully Trader Johann had arrived the second to last day I was going to leave.  Trader Johann knows practically everybody around.  If he had come after I left, I may have gone in the opposite direction and quite possibly never found them.  He directed me in a northerly direction to go to some islands which he had last seen Adam; however, it had been over two years prior.  I thanked him kindly as I went on my way that night.  I prefer traveling by star and moonlight, as long as it is a cloudless day or few clouds obviously, which that night it was.  Every clue after this was more along the lines of where Adam had been, not Vemund.  I figured because Vemund got mixed up in ‘bad’ company, he would stay clear of places which had a lot of people.”

Vemund kind of looked guilty as he had been reliving this over again.

“Adam had a good head start, so every lead I got on where someone had last seen him was two years prior.  After a year of sailing the seas and chasing leads I still had not found either of my brothers.  On the other hand, I gained a wealth of knowledge of islands, peoples, tribes, and clans.  This is probably what will help you most, Jarl, even Hiccup and the rest of the Hooligan Tribe,” Annett leaned forward slightly.  “There started to be rumors floating around the seas of ‘Dragon Hunters’ who did what their title suggested.  At the time, vikings were still at war with the beasts, so no one paid them or the rumors any mind.  Most of them were like, ‘Good riddance.’  Although I was never one to battle the dragons; growing up, we hardly had any dragons around.  Yes we did have battles with them, some bigger than others, though the clan cared less about fighting to get a rid of the dragons because we had so few battles with them.  We treated them like you would bees and wasps: If you don’t bother them, they are more likely to not bother you.  Our main enemies were renegade vikings trying to plunder our resources or neighboring tribes and clans wanting to do the same.  So coming from the standpoint of ‘Dragon Hunters’ being odd and frankly unknown to me, I started to keep an account of any information I got my hands on about them; figuring one day it would come in useful.”

“Just like it was with trying to find my brothers, I only got bits and parts, clues here and there about the Dragon Hunters.  For several years after that, I basically made a whole trip around the entire outer rim of the archipelago.  After five years from leaving my home and traveling the land, I became fairly well known and started my own small trading business.  When I did see Trader Johann, he got me started.  Since I did this just on the side, my only business was in the archipelago for my main focus was always finding my brothers.”

I asked a question as she paused, “If you were trading in the archipelago, how come we never saw you come to Berk?”

“Good question,” answered Annett.  “But a simple answer: Unless I had to restock for supplies to live off and trade with, I only went where the clues to my brothers would take me.”

Elsa then questioned, “Did you finally learn more about the Dragon Hunters?”

“Yes I did,” Annett related.  “Actually at the same time did I learn more about the whereabouts of Adam.  Right after that fifth year had completed, I learned where Adam had only been just four months prior.  Learning this, I switched focus and devoted all of my time to finding my brothers.  Don’t worry, I still wrote down what I learned about the Dragon Hunters.  Cross referencing the rumors I heard about the Dragon Hunters and my knowledge of the archipelago, I figured out that they were located more around the northeastern and southeastern areas.  However, they stayed away from the main trading routes, so all I really had to go on was rumors.”

Elsa then declared, “But that changed didn’t it.”

Annett smiled, “I’m getting there.  The place I learned about Adam going to next was further inside the Barbaric Archipelago, so I felt more confident as all my other clues or leads only led on the outer rim.”

“By Trader Johann I knew of the Berserkers and Outcasts, so I made sure I stayed clear of them and their territories.  On the Dragon Hunter subject, I finally found more credible information on where they had been.  When I would go to the places however, the Dragon Hunters would not be there.  It is like they never stayed in one place for very long; almost as if they had a main base somewhere else and used those islands more as stopping of points.  But the things I did learn was treasures that they would leave behind, well rumors of what they had and had hidden.  That could possibly be why the diary was stolen.”

I agreed, “That probably is it.  Anybody who had known about you and your diary and who wanted to find treasure would do anything to get the book.”

“About this time is when I heard from the Trader that the Berkians had made peace with the dragons and had started training them.  To me, this was the outcome I would have tried to do: If we could train them, maybe they would be different?  But unless these wild, winged animals were suddenly tame, then I didn’t see this ever happening.”

“By now, it had been years since I had heard anything about Vemund, so my last chance was finding Adam as I kept getting closer and closer to where he had last been.  Don’t get me wrong though, I never gave up hope I would find Vemund, it was just Adam felt so much closer.  ‘If I could find Adam, finding Vemund might be that much easier,’ I would often think.  The clues started to stall out and not come in as much if at all again.  I felt almost back at square one, but something inside of me kept telling me, ‘You’re close, keep searching.’  So I did.  After praying I would finally catch a break, I did.  I learned from Trader Johann, after he came after me to catch me before I left an island that a man fitting Adam’s description was heading in the direction of Berk.  He wasn’t sure if he was going to Berk, but seeing how Berk was the only island in that direction, I knew it had to be the one.”

Asvord then guessed, “So is this when you came to Berk and we found you?”

“Yes,” she replied and concluded.  “I had finally found Adam and Vemund!  Not in my wildest of dreams did I think I would find them both at the same time.  The rest is history.  And thanks to you Jarl, my family is back together… for good.”

“You’re welcome,” I replied, paused, and then asked.  “So is that all that is in your diary about the Dragon Hunters?”

“Yes,” she answered.  “Since my quest was to always find my brothers, I told this to everyone I met that I may not come back to any certain place and if they never saw me again then it would mean I found them, when it was completed I stopped going after the rumors surrounding the Dragon Hunters.  All I really actually knew where ‘stop-off’ sites where they would stay few only a few weeks before leaving again.  The people started the rumors that they would hide or bury or whatever to their treasures and such on their islands or other islands, but every effort to find such treasures fell short as nothing was ever found.  Maybe since the Berserkers are more active now than ever before and what Hiccup found with the Dragon Eye, the whereabouts of the treasure might be more prevalent than ever before.  If anybody can take rumor and learn the facts and the truth, it is you Jarl.  Part of these treasures might include even the Dragon Eye, which Hiccup now has.”

“Thanks,” I… well thanked her.  “You probably hit it the nail right on the head.”

Since that about wrapped it up, my sisters and I began to leave.

Knowing there was something else I wanted to ask, I kept stalling… “Oh, finally remember something else… what is that symbol on the side of your diary?”

“Oh that?” she said as we walked out the door.  “That’s just my clan’s crest that we used.  I always wondered how one would fight with two wobbly looking swords like that.”

“Well,” Asvord waved.  “We’ll talk to you later.”

“Glad you are felling better,” added Elsa.

Waving, “Goodbye,” I could not help but think about what Annett said last, “If that is their home clan’s crest, though they are now adopted Hooligans, what significance does this hold because it is the same crest as The Reaper’s sail?  We know what the Thorvavlds are now, great friends.  But what were they before even what Annett told us?  And… And how did Annett know it was called the Dragon Eye?”

I asked my sisters on our way home if they had told her about the Dragon Eye.  They said they had not.  Now I have another thing to think about.

Blossom and Sparky's backstory: [from Vikings PoV]

It is the first warm day since the last winter.

My name is Ruffnuff, I am fifeen years old. To make a long story
short on how I got my name, my parents are friends with the Thorstons
and our parents both had babies within the same week. My mother really
liked the name that the Thorstons had named their daughter (Ruffnut)
and decided to name me Ruffnuff. Me and my Sand Wraith, Sandstorm are
very anxious for a race taking place tomorrow. The race is going to be
held at Amourwing Island, it will be just a few of my friends and me.

I spent most of the morning doing my daily chores. When afternoon
rolled around I decided to take a short flight with Sandstorm before
making food for tomorrow and designing our war paint. Our short flight
ended up taking longer than we thought it would as we got sidetracked.
As we were flying around the Wilderness we found a place to land and
the flowers are beautiful this year and I really wanted to draw some
of the beautiful lilac blossoms. I was almost done with my drawing
when I saw a rather large shadow pass over the ground I looked up to
see a beautiful lilac colored dragon  headed in the direction of
Amourwing Island, it looked a lot like a zippleback but the sun was so
bright I couldn’t get that good of a look at it. I watched it until it
flew out of view, then went back to finishing my drawing. After I
finished I whistled for Sandstorm who was enjoying a pool of water
close by, I mounted and we started back for our house.

After arriving back home I feed Sandstorm his favorite meal of salmon
and a few halibuts, grabbed a sandwich which my mother had left on the
counter for me, and headed up to may room to design our war paint for
the following day. An hour later I had finally finished my design, I
ended up being a simple design with a few lines on the face and a
flame going down the wings, the colors were going to be lilac and
orange because every time I tried to think different colors my mind
kept going back to the dragon that I saw earlier. I then realized that
I didn’t have the paint colors for my design so I decided to take a
walk down to the port to visit Trader Johann’s ship which had just
arrived yesterday. He had the perfect colors and I had brought just
enough to pay for them I saw that it was getting dark and I knew that
my parents might get a little worried seeing as I had not brought a
dragon with me, so I decided to take the short cut home. When I got
home my parents were also just arriving home, they had been visiting
with some of their friends. I went inside and started to pack my bag
for tomorrow I put in the paints that I had bought and threw in my war
paint design then started to make our food. I put an apple in the bag
then went straight way to making a perch sandwich for lunch. For
Sandstorm I tossed in some salmon and halibut. I headed out to the
stable to check on Sandstorm before going to bed, seeing that
Sandstorm had already fallen asleep I headed up to my room to do the

The next morning I woke up early I was excited and nervous for the
race later today, I had done plenty of races in the past but neither
my friends nor I have ever raced at Amourwing Island that is part of
the reason we choose to hold the race there then none of us will have
an unfair advantage. After getting dressed in my racing outfit which
was a pair of long gray legging with a black skirt and shirt, I
slipped on my shoes with the leather bands. I did my hair in a simple
French braid in the back with lilac and orange highlights to
compliment my chosen colors, then I placed one of my favorite helmets
on my head, I grabbed some of my black wristbands and shoulder pads
and quietly went downstairs not wanting to wake my parents. I prepared
myself some breakfast which consisted of a piece of toast from some
bread that my mother made earlier this week, and I fried up some eggs
over the hot coals from last night. I hastily ate my breakfast, and
cleaned up after myself. I wanted to get to Amourwing Island early and
seeing as my parents hadn’t woken yet I decided to leave them a note.
Then I grabbed my shield, walked out the door and headed to the stable
just a few yards away.

I opened up the heavy door to our stable, walked inside and lighted
our monstrous nightmare gel lamp we have inside. Seeing that Sandstorm
was still asleep I went over to where I kept his racing saddle. It was
a little dusty from not using it much this winter so I decided while
Sandstorm slept for a little longer I would polish it. I grabbed the
oil we use for polishing our saddles and a cloth and got straight to
work. Ten minutes later the saddle was polished and looked good as
new, I could tell that Sandstorm was stirring so I went to grab some
breakfast for him. I went to the corner where we kept the fish and
noticed that there wasn’t much left so I grabbed my fishing poll and
chose to get him some fresh fish from the stream next to our house
while he finished waking up. The fish were biting really well this
morning so it didn’t take me long to fetch him a good size breakfast
of a two salmon, one herring, and one halibut. When I went back in the
stable Sandstorm was completely awake and hopping around waiting for
his breakfast. I tossed him the fish and he quickly gulped them down.
I strapped on his saddle and saddlebag then we walked outside. After
closing the door I mounted Sandstorm and started the hour trip to
Amourwing Island.

When I arrived at the island I got the paint and design out from my
saddlebag then started painting Sandstorm, first I paint the flame on
his wings and finished on his face. Then I did a quick few lines on my
face and watched for my friends to arrive, they were all going to come
together as they all were at Berk for the weekend. Beautiful Wind and
her night terror, Runaway landed on the Island, I was excited to see
her and ran right up to give her a hug. I then realized that my other
friends weren’t with her.

“Hi, Wind where is Lisard and Scarlet?” I asked.

“They ended up not being able to make it their parents made important
last minute plans that they had to attend to.” Wind said.

“Well then I guess it will just be a fun one-on-one race. I guess we
should probably set up the track we want to use, did you bring the
colored flags?” I questioned.

“Yeah I have them right here in my pack.” Wind answered.

“Good lets fly out and set them up” I responded.

Wind and I flew out and set up the track, it had a lot of ups and
downs and turns. We would do three laps. We went to the starting line
and counted down from five together. When we got to one to both yelled
go and took off like an arrow, because my dragon has bigger wings we
were in front. We were almost half way through the first lap and were
almost neck in neck with Wind when Sandstorms ears shot up seeing my
dragons ear go up we slowed our pace and let Wind pull ahead, it was
then that I heard it too an ear piercing scream from that of a dragon
that is injured. Completely forgetting the race me and Sandstorm sped
toward the scream at full speed, only slowing down when we got there.
When we got there I saw that it was indeed a scream from an injured
dragon, the lilac dragon that I had mistaken for a zippleback but now
saw that it is a Grumbling Rufflewing, which is an extremely rare
dragon of a massive size, has two heads, a split tail and is
considered aggressive. The Rufflewing had its left wing pinned under a
pile of large boulders that must have fallen from the cliff up above
it. I realized that if it is aggressive I would have a hard time
getting close to it, but I had to try to help it because it would be
harder for me to just leave a dragon helplessly injured then try to
help them even if they are aggressive.

We landed close to the Rufflewing but far enough away that it hadn’t
noticed us yet; I got off of Sandstorm, pulled out a halibut from the
saddlebag and slowly made my way closer to the Rufflewing. When the
Rufflewing saw me, she got startled and started flapping her wings
which resulted in one of the rocks rolling do from the cliff and
landing on her wing making her yelp in pain, it was then that she saw
she could not fly away and she started to get defensive she shot a
blast in my direction; the blast upset Sandstorm who is very gentle
but is extremely protective of me, he got into a protective stance
between me and the Rufflewing, and would have blasted it with one of
his powerful blasts had I not pushed his head away at the right time.

“Sandstorm, calm down I just startled her she’s fine she won’t hurt me.”

I tried to calm Sandstorm down with my voice and thankfully it
worked. Sandstorm, pouting walked a few steps away and sat down
watching the Rufflewing as if to say ‘she’s my human, don’t even think
about hurting her’.

I then continued walking toward the Rufflewing with each step I took
the Rufflewing seemed to get more and more anxious but I knew I
couldn’t do anything from a distance so I slowly crept forward toward
her. When I was almost an arms distance away I held out the halibut,
the Rufflewing at first just sniffed at the fish then quickly and
unexpectedly snapped up the fish in one bite. As I stood there I
slowly reached out my hand to the dragon and looked away, had it not
been for Sandstorm I probably would not have my hand the Rufflewing
had unexpectedly snapped at my hand just has Sandstorm had pulled me
away. Then and there I realized that it would take a lot more than a
fish for this dragon to trust me.

Even though the dragon had snapped at me I knew I still had to get
the boulders off of his wing. Slowly I walked around the dragon to its
left side with Sandstorm following my every move not wanting to leave
me by myself. I reached for the first boulder but then realized I
would have a hard time trying to move the boulder without hurting the
Grumbling Rufflewing anymore then it already was, so using hand
motions I told Sandstorm to grab the large boulder on top. Sandstorm
grudgingly listened, he flew overtop and picked up the heavy looking
boulder, Sandstorm then set the rock down next to me. When Sandstorm
had picked up the rock it upset the Rufflewing even more and she
emitted a gas similar to that of a zipplebacks but in a way it was
different, the other head than set the gas on fire it was a large
blast and I would have been burnt had it not once again been for
Sandstorm. I tried one last time to try to get close to the Rufflewing
but I could tell that it wasn’t so keen on me being there and neither
was Sandstorm. I backed up a little to try and get another idea on how
to help it.

After another failed attempt to get the boulders off of its wing, I
had to sadly come to the conclusion that the dragon didn’t want help
or at least not from me. I started to back away to go find Wind when
the Grumbling Rufflewing made a strange gurgling noise, similar to the
noise Sandstorm makes when he is sad. I decided to try one more time
to help the dragon, this time it was slightly calmer and seemed to
finally realize that I wasn’t there to hurt it. I reached out my hand
one more time slightly more apprehensive this time but still knew it
is the first step of trust on both sides. After what seemed like
minutes the Rufflewing reached her heads and touched my hand, I guess
it finally trusted me.

“I will name you Blossom” I said talking to the left head.

“And you will be Sparky” I stated gesturing to the right head. “Now
what do you say we get to work getting those boulders off of your

When we finally had the boulders off I examined her wing surprisingly
it was not broken just a few scratches here and there. I then gave
them another fish and mounted Sandstorm to go find Wind. I found
Beautiful Wind setting up camp.

“What happened to you?” she asked.

“Oh, just helping injured dragons.” I replied.

Shrugging her shoulders Wind walked off towards the trees I presume
to find fire wood. I looked up a few minutes later when I saw a shadow
on the ground to see Blossom and Sparky coming with a couple of fish
in their mouth. I was so excited to see them, when we had flown off in
opposite directions I never thought I would see them again, but here
they were right in front of me.

“Blossom, Sparky oh I’m so excited to see you. Now I can show Wind
that I was telling the truth.” I said smiling.

Runaway came out of the woods a few paces in front of Wind, as soon
as Blossom and Sparky saw the Night Terror they immediately got in to
a defensive stance between me and the night terror.

“Sparky, Blossom what wrong?” I asked not seeing Runaway yet.

Wind came out of the woods a few seconds later just as Sparky and
Blossom shot a warning blast toward the woods to try to scare away the
smaller dragon. The blast narrowly missed Beautiful Wind, she dropped
all the wood that she was carrying, if I wasn’t so worried about
getting Sparky and Blossom to calm down it probably would have been a
funny scene. I finally was able to calm Sparky and Blossom down by
getting between them and Runaway to show them that Runaway wasn’t a

“Wow you guys sure are defensive” I muttered to them.

“What was that for?” Wind asked a bit perturbed.

“Wind meet Sparky and Blossom, Blossom and Sparky meet Beautiful
Wind.” I said. “This is the dragon I told you about earlier.”

“Honestly, to tell you the truth, I didn’t believe what you said
earlier I thought it was just an excuse for losing.” Wind replied

“Oh, come on, me and Sandstorm lose?” I said trying you fluster her.
“Well anyways, Sparky and Blossom brought supper lets get the fire
started then we can cook supper.”

“Okay, coming right up.” Wind answered.

Supper was really good, it consisted of grilled fish and the apples

that I brought. After supper we packed up and headed for home. We
arrived home a little before dark. Sparky and Blossom had followed us
all the way home and I
