(Okay so I guess that was more than 20 minutes as I wanted to get the chapter posted at 9pm... 38 minutes ago... Lol.  Anyway)

Here is my brand new story with a new original story for my characters.  As the story progress, you will see Race to the Edge Seasons 1 and 2 from Jarl and his friends PoV.  Their mystery will be separate from Hiccup's mission on finding Dagur and defeating him, but at the same time Hiccup and Jarl's friends will cross paths many times.  There will be a ton of references to the shows before, during, and after an episode.

It is quite long, for my standards, but it is the chapter to get things going.

I hope you guys like it.  Enjoy! :)

On the Edge of Mystery

Chapter 1

Reflecting

My name is Jarl Brodd Mollerson, but you probably already knew that.

With my success as a mystery solver and a Dragon Racer, I received one of the first jobs in the Berk Guard.  Not long after getting back from The Golden Isles, probably a few months, the Berk guard was started.  Then by Stoick’s word, I was one of the first to be recruited.  There were several vikings on Berk recruited; I was in the first group.  You do not have to join if you do not want to, but for a lot of people it was considered an honor to be selected by the Chief of Berk to defend Berk.

These last three years have been fairly quiet.  Quiet on the war and mystery front, not so quiet on the home front; it seems like everyone else is involved with something, except for me.  Yes I am in the Berk Guard and that is important, but really I have not done much since I joined because for someone of my talents being a mystery solver… there have not been hardly any mysteries on Berk.

Now there is the occasional missing person’s case, stolen property case, or dispute among two or so villagers.  But all of these never amounted to much and were solved in a week or less.

But hey, I am not complaining.  Well I guess I am in a way, but… I just would like something challenging to do.

These last three years have been the best of my life even without a mystery.  My family has caught up some much time with my father.  My mom seems so much better.  My family just as a whole is so good right now.  I think the support and time I am able to spend with my entire family has helped me not feeling I have to have a mystery to feel good myself.

Now these last few weeks mother, especially in the last three or four days, has seen my desire to have a mystery.  We have talked about it some, even with father.  Having a mystery is not my main focus and they wanted to make sure of that.  Having family, friends, and Berk as my focus has always been at my forefront.  I guess it is just I see more of my friends and even do things with my family if I had a mystery to solve.

Then my dad joked yesterday, “Be careful what you wish for, you may just get it.”

That is true; I may get a mystery soon and wish, “I’m good.  I don’t need a mystery; I thought I was feeling down, but I don’t need one…” etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

For me not much has changed, but for everyone else, it seems like everything has changed: Some for the good and maybe some for the not so good.

Hiccup and the Academy Riders do not go out much.  Hiccup and the Academy had started making a map of the whole archipelago.  At the time they started, everyone thought that would be a huge feat to pull off.  But with vikings on the backs of dragons, the world got a little bigger.  Hiccup was able to pull this off and complete his map, but Hiccup is not satisfied.  The Academy revisited each island and sea stack more than once and did not find a new species of dragon.  They had found all the dragons around that there was to find in the Archipelago.

So once the map was completed, the Academy kind of drifted apart.  Even though these have been the most peaceful three years in the history of Berk, when vikings do not have something to do, they “seem” to drift apart from their friends.  Do not get me wrong, we are all still friends here on Berk; but like I have said, everything has changed for everybody around here.  Everybody seems to be doing something new or different than they were three years ago.

Though, one thing that has stayed constant is the Dragon Racing Season.  Every winter through the mid to latter parts of summer, we would have our races and tournaments.  A Dragon Racing Series was also started among the Racers who would race to make things more competitive with bragging rights for the year as, “The Dragon Racer of the Year” and privileges here and there around Berk, including special treatment every time Berk had supper in The Great Hall; you could be one of the first in line to get some of the first servings after the leaders of Berk.

The races were quite competitive with all my friends and also with my family.  I have won several races and a tournament or two and even two Series Championships.  The Series Championship, by the way, is any available and able bodied racer could race and is the normal sheep scoring rules and lap score timing how it was for the first Family Tournament.  Asvord won a Series Championship, with Elsa actually placing second; Elsa has progressively gotten better and better at riding and racing her dragon Meatballs.  Oh, and that Series was a bad year for me.  I placed fourth.  Yes, fourth is a bad year for me.  There have been two other Series Championships won by Cazi one year and Garth the other.

Now there have been several other tournaments such as the annual Family Tournaments, Clash of Clans, and Race to Dawn.  There have been years where we had more than one tournament in one year in addition to the regular Series Championship; actually the tournament races were built into the Series Championship, so you were actually racing for two things: First place in the tournament and also points and wins for the Series Championship.  Cazi has won a Family Tournament, Annabeth has won one as well; Asvord, Explod, and even Angie has won a Family Tournament.

Everyone was a contender in practically every race at every track, so it gave for exciting thrills every race as you had to bring your A-game every time or you would be left in the dust.  We all do well at all the tracks, but everybody has their one track that they are really good at and the other track that gives them fits.  Oddly enough, Fredrick and I are better at the smaller tracks with more turns in them.  We have trouble with the tracks with more straightaways, but even then we are still a contender for the win.  Those who I always find battling for wins in races is Annabeth,  Cazi, Garth, Hattori, Astrid, Ashley, Hiccup at the times he races and Explod.  No all my other friends do quite well at racing too, but it seems like I see those most at the end of races, particularly when it is a tournament and at the end of the season for the Championship.  I cannot ever seem to get away from my sister; she is either in front of me or behind me when we place.

Hiccup won a the first official Racing Series Championship, but he seemed to drift away from racing and into more exploring and working on his map.  Hiccup still however raced in the tournaments, but he was not as relevant in the Series Point Standings.

I could probably go on and on about racing, but it is currently on my mind as just a few months ago we finished this year’s Series Championship and I won.  I had not won the Championship since the Series after Hiccup won.  Fredrick and I were always good during the season and in tournaments, but it seemed like towards the end of the season everyone else got better while we kind of stayed the same.  So this past year, I put double the amount of effort into racing as I designed my own saddle specifically for a Thunderdrum.  Obviously getting some pointers from Hiccup, Gobber, and even Garth, I was able to make my own saddle so that it would be comfortable for me but also my dragon.  And with the comfortable saddle, I was able to use it also as my racing saddle as it is lightweight, sleek, a lot lighter than either of my other two saddles, and even more durable.  But Hiccup and even Fishlegs have said, “We will make you that Gronckle Iron saddle we promised way back.  As soon as we know the formula for Gronckle Iron, you will get one.”

Right now, “I don’t know if I even need the Gronckle Iron Saddle, as this was is so good especially since I made it.  But who knows, maybe in using the Gronckle Iron would make the saddle even lighter.”

I better get off of the topic of racing before I take your leg off.  My family, as I have said, is doing very well.  My father was re-appointed to maintaining the catapults around Berk; he was also re-appointed to training other vikings on how to use a catapult and all that would entail.  By the way, my father did finally get his a dragon of his own… I got “tired” of lugging him all over the place… He got a Monstrous Nightmare.  I am guessing because mother has Fintan and he is a Monstrous Nightmare, it only seemed fitting that father get the same type of dragon, but a girl.  Father’s Monstrous Nighmare’s name is Marigold.  He named her that because her color markings are very much like a marigold flower.  Marigold, the dragon, has a base color of orange while her highlights, stripes, and even markings are a very dark orange.

My mother is still one of the head seamstresses on Berk; she continues to make any kind of clothing for everybody and still mends and tends to any clothes that anybody brings in.  She has also gotten quite good with making racing gear, specifically flight suits or in this case racing suits for any who might need them.  Mother makes a basic suit for the person, and they can modify it all they want for whatever they need.

As for my sisters, Asvord and Elsa, well they have grown a lot… unfortunately.  No… ha-ha… they are fine.  Both of my sister have trained their dragons to the point where both Spiker and Meatballs do not really need any more training.  They both fine tune their racing skills as riders on their dragons, but they have complete practically all there is in training their dragons.

Yes, they still do the whole girl thing where they go hang out and do girly stuff with our other friends.  But I guess that is basically the same with me and the guys.  It must just be the difference between what we do and they do.  Though it is all good, most of the time we all get together and have training sessions in hand to hand combat with Astrid.  Even mother has giving a lesson or two, but it seems her style is all her own how she fights.  I still get a headache thinking about it, specifically around my eyes.  My dad and I like to go and workout from time to time, at least once a week.  I have gotten a lot stronger, better skilled with a sword to match my skills with a bow and arrow, and also better skilled with using my Gronckle Iron bow as a sword and a formidable weapon.

Oh, sorry, we were talking about my sisters, were we not?  Well… they are fine… he-he.

As for my friends, they have had a lot of changes themselves in their lives but at the same time they are my same old friends.

Cullan, Pat, Thoreous, and Jack like to hang out a lot; although Cullan still hates it when they have to go out on fishing trips and such.  Cullan always ask Gobber, “Why do we always have to go?”

Gobber always responds, “Because I hardly ever see you fellows ever doing anything else.”

Jack and Thor do race, but they do it more to have something to do.  Of the four, Jack is probably the better racer as he and Nightwing have gotten better over time with speed.  That used to be their down fall, but now it seems like Nightwing just had not developed fully yet.

Hattori, Cullan, Explod, and even Ohmarr have joined the Berk Guard.  Right now, they are more of the actual guard and are a part of the volunteer part of it here on Berk.  Garth, on the other hand, is helping with the engineering part of things; helping Hiccup with better designs and tweaks to existing buildings, structures, and weapons for defense and offense.  After what he accomplished with completing his underwater saddle, Garth has been busy with projects other than his own.  Garth had stopped work on his flight suit as it was just not to his liking to focus all of his attention on the underwater saddle.  When he completed it, Gobber enlisted him in his shop to help out.  Garth has told me he wishes he would have more time to work on his things, but he is glad to help out.  Hyrith has really just been getting used to staying in one place for a long time.  He had been on the move for so long he forgot what it was like to have an actual home.  In addition to Sun Rose, Hyrith’s other Deadly Nadder, Moonstone, is living on Berk as well.  We later found out why Moonstone kept going back to The Golden Isles; Moonstone had laid her eggs and was keeping an eye on them.  Once the baby Deadly Nadders had hatched, they flew back and are now among the rest of the hatchling, baby, and young dragon population on Berk.

As for the rest of my friends… Ashley had won the Saddle of Champions Tournament.  I had forgotten about that tournament.  Saddle of Champions was a version of Clash of Clans but for the specific prize of a saddle made for a Champion.  She and the Snow Leopards, her racing clan, won the tournament each member getting a saddle of their own.

Repteil, Sapphire, Navaro, Tory, Meen, and Faith are not up to much these days.  All of them are great racers, as well as fighters.  Whenever the Thawfest Games roll around again or Astrid has a camp or competition to see who is the best fighting female on Berk, these girls are some of the first to sign up.  Some of them may look girly or act like girls - “That is because we are girls, stupid,” they keep telling me.  I just chuckle at that every time. - But do not let their looks fool you.  They may all look “innocent” or “harmless”, but if you get on their bad side or you are on the opposing side in a fight… watch out.  Sapphire, Tory, and Meen did however join the Berk Guard.  Also, Angie has been thinking about joining the Berk Guard, but should do so soon.  Angie is probably one of the most competitive person I have seen; she could give me a run for my money.  I am also very competitive, but Angie is competitive in practically everything.  On the other hand, I am more competitive with my sisters with the whole “Sibling Rivalry” thing.  I want to win just as badly as the next guy, but when that next guy so happens to be Angie Carolina, I might have another thing coming.  Angie can get into debates just trying to win saying she is more competitive than someone else.  Now she hardly ever, if at all, ever gets angry in a bad way.  Angie must use her frustration and angry to channel that energy into completing the task at hand.  She is very loyal, loves hanging out with her friends, more often Cazi and Annabeth, and is always one to comfort another even if she is frustrated and angry in the moment.

Speaking of those two, Cazi and Annabeth, Cazi has had a lot of fun raising Skybolt.  Fishlegs has been over a ton of times asking Cazi a bunch of questions about how she is raising Skybolt because Cazi is the first known viking to have ever seen let alone raise a Skrill from birth.  Yes, granted, Annabeth and I were there also, but the Skrill is Cazi’s.  Except for Fishlegs coming over and bombarding Cazi with questions from time to time, having Skybolt to raise has really helped Cazi have something to do.  Cazi was and still is one of the ones that loved helping me solve mystery.  She says it was because of the thrills and excitement, but I believe it was more because she could have the opportunity to punch somebody… other than Snotlout.  Cazi has said she is soon to about make a mystery of her own… by kidnapping Snotlout and telling us we have to find him.  I have told Cazi that doing so would not be much of a mystery as she would know where he would be.

“Well do something about coming up with a mystery, even if it is just another routine missing item around Berk,” Cazi keeps saying.  “I’m getting bored of hitting Snotlout.  I need something else to hit.”

I have suggested her joining the Berk Guard, but even if she did join, there is not much to do in the Punching-Things department.  Although, I believe Cazi will join soon.

Annabeth has been the most at peace I have ever seen her.  Given the circumstances of her arrival on Berk, the knowledge of her family history, and her being a Berserker - Annabeth and I are still the only ones who know about her being a Berserker in all.  When I keep a secret, it is basically a promise in my eyes. - has changed her, but for the better.  Annabeth and I have seen a lot more of each other as time wore on.  Growing closer as friends also helped a lot with everything that happened in her life.

Having Anora on Berk is probably the most important factor in that change.  There are still some sore feelings towards Anora when she attacked, but it does not bother Annabeth or both her dragons; Star Scream and Anora.  The feelings around Berk, I have noticed, have been more pointed in the direction that both of her dragons she has are dragon types barely if not known at all to Berk.  If nothing else goes wrong, then with time and patience things will eventually be better.

Annabeth had gone through a transitional phase the first couple of weeks and months after my last mystery, “Thoughts of Guilt” I am calling it, Annabeth amassed to no fault of her own several “enemies” with what happened with Anora attacking Berk.  The fact that Anora was under a spell did not change matters much.  The key guy who stirred up things was Mildew, of course.  But I kept telling Annabeth to keep racing and to show them just how good Anora can really be.  That one race soon after we came back from The Golden Isles was Annabeth and Anora’s “coming out party” you might say.  Of the races we had done, no one had ever seen a dragon, maybe except for Toothless, make up so much ground in just one lap to the point Annabeth and Astrid tagged me and Hiccup, respectively, at the exact same time.  Anora and Annabeth had a lot of ground to make up, but they did.  Then in the races and tournaments to follow, those “enemies” were never really enemies, they just needed to see for themselves how good a dragon trainer Annabeth really is to take what they thought was a “rogue” dragon and train it to be a formidable racing dragon.  Mildew gave up several months ago to cause any trouble.  I have not seen much of Mildew since.

Oh and what about me and Fredrick?  Yes, we too have grown quite close and fond of each other.  I have trained him as much as I know how, or even Fishlegs or the Book of Dragons or Bork’s Papers or Stoick knows how.  Thunderdrums, though they are a common dragon, do not have much info on how to train one.  I have really just taught Fredrick what I would like him to do and allowed Fishlegs to take notes.  Nobody really knew how to train a Thunderdrum as Stoick was the only one who knew what little in-depth training there was for a Thunderdrum, so I was basically on my own to teach Fredrick.  A lot of times now when we fly, he already knows what moves I want him to execute.  Just the shift of my weight and which way I am leaning are ways Fredrick knows which way to go, even tugs on the reins help too.  But I still give him the same nudges I have always given him just to be sure and remind him of what to do.

          “Who are you talking to?”

“Oh Astrid,” I replied, coming out of my daydream.  “Oh, just Fredrick, I guess.”

Astrid had just flown in on Stormfly and landed, I did not even notice they had.  I was sitting next to Fredrick looking at the sunset, I got up as she dismounted her dragon; I had just finished a long day of a weapons test on catapults with Gobber, Snotlout, and my dad.  I had stayed behind after those three had left to just sit and think.  I must have thought for quite a long time as I just now realized the sun is indeed setting and I should be getting home.  I should have been home hours ago.

I continued, “I’ve just been reflecting on things.  How things were and how things are now.  Did you finally tell Hiccup?”

“About joining the Berk Guard?” Astrid said kind of depressed.  “Yes.  After finally catching up to him and getting in a word.”

Taking note of her tone of voice, I asked, “Anything wrong?”

Astrid just sighed, “Well, Hiccup’s been so focused on the map and finding new dragons that there isn’t much more to do now.  I told him we have visited every possible place in the archipelago more than once and still haven’t found a new dragon in a very long time.”

“How’d he take you mentioning joining the Berk Guard,” I rephrased the question.

“By telling me he was happy for me,” she said, still depressed.  “Though he knew and I knew he did not like hearing it,” Astrid gave another sigh as she stepped forward, gave Fredrick a few rubs, and then stared at the sunset.  “Joining the Berk Guard was something I always wanted to do every since Stoick announced starting it.  But after the war with the Berserkers, things seemed to change.”

“You know joining the Berk Guard is supposed to be a good thing right?” I questioned her.

“I know,” Astrid quickly replied.  “It is just… I don’t know.”

I returned, “Well we all need things in life to work towards, even if life around us changes, viking especially.”

“Well,” Astrid said as she remounted Stormfly.  “We’ve gone over the archipelago so many times… there might not be that much more out there.  For me at least, my job with the map is done and I need to move on, do what I need to do.  There wasn’t much more I could have done to help.”

I then suggested as I too got on my dragon, “Maybe you need to think about what is next for you and Stormfly?”

“Funny, that’s what I said to Hiccup,” Astrid chuckled.

“Look Astrid,” I said, trying to cheer her up.  “We all come to a fork in the road where

“Where’d you hear that?” Astrid replied, knowing I did not think of that.

“My dad,” I admitted.  “He actually told me yesterday the same thing I told you just now.  We’re vikings.  We need something to do.  When we get to the point where the thing we have worked on for so long or have done for so long is starting to seem like it is over, what we strive for in life we almost cling to it.  When something is completed, we need to find something else to do.  Maybe our next path is a path we need to make our own.  Being a part of the Berk Guard, having a mystery to solve, or racing dragons isn’t everything.  Whatever you choose make sure your friends are by your side.  If you pick something where your friends are not, your heart won’t ever be satisfied unless you have your friends with you.”

“Now who said that?” Astrid now smiled.

“Mother, two days ago,” I chuckled.  “I think point is, instead of trying so hard to make a path for yourself, maybe you need to wait for a path to come to you; maybe we just need to slow down and look what we already have.  Maybe there is a path staring us right in the face and we don’t even see it.”

She sighed again, but sounded better, “Thanks for trying to cheer me up anyway.”

Both dragons lifted up off the ground and I said, “You’re welcome.  Tomorrow is a new day.  Who knows… the problem might be solved tomorrow.”

Meep

I never read any of your other fan-fictions, but this is great so far! The only story I read by you is Thoughts of Guilt, and I'm only about half way done with it. But it's amazing!

Viking Age: 19

Viking Tribe: (Berkian, Outcast, Beserker, Dragon Hunter) Outcast/Berkian

She can get the job done no matter how hard the task is. incredibly spooky and stealthy she can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Dragon Appearence:nxvzx2.png

Backstory on how Viking Name found/trained Dragon Name: Anna and Anora found each other on Dragon Island or really Anora found Annabeth.Anora found Annabeth On Dragon Island with her family she studied Annabeth's family really closely and took a shine to her. When Ana was one she started to slowly reveal herself like coming in at night, when her mom saw the dragon she screamed causing her to accidently scratch her cheek. Alvin then came in seeing that his wife was about to k.ill the dragon he stopped her and told her to look what Anna was doing which was gently petting Anora's horn. On her second birthday Alvin said that they could keep her.  A year afterward they were attacked by Berserkers and Alvin told Anora to do what ever it took to take care of her. (This was before Riders or Berk)
