Eira

Before she could stop it, Eira barked out a laugh. She slapped her hands over her mouth to cover it up, but it was already too late. She attempted to reclaim her suspicious glower, wiping the grin off her face and trying to look grim and serious again. Clearing her throat, she poured as much accusation into her voice as she could muster after her breach, her golden eye boring mercilessly into him. "So, you remember being a dragon hunter, then?"

Was she accusing me of

Was she accusing me of something? His mind wondered. “Barely.“ he replied “Not much though.“ The boy then turned to Albatross who was reaching for another fish and Mychael pulled his food away from the dragon “No stealing! If you want food ask. I know you are used to taking from others but this is different.“ Albatross roared something under his breath “What was that?“ Mychael asked. Albatross immediately sat up straight and acted innocent “Now what did I say about if you want food?“ The Shockjaw slumped his shoulders and looked down and he growled softly “Much better.“ Mychael Said and have his dragon a fish.

Attitude adjustment

Eira and Mychael were deep in conversation, but Eslig wasn't paying attention. He was entirely focused on Albatross, frowning and muttering to himself under his breth as he studied the dragon.

It was Eira who broke his concentration, rounding on Eslig in the midst of her increasingly animated conversation with Mychael. "And what are you doing, exactly?"

Eslig frowned, pointing to an area about halfway down Albatross' back. "See those two fins? They don't quite line up."

Eira stared at him as if he'd suddenly grown a third ear. "So?"

"I'm not completely sure, but that could be why Albatross can't fly. Yes, he's wounded, but the wound isn't that severe. However, Albatross was stuck in a net for a while, which could have thrown his spine out of line. I've got to adjust Ambolt every once in a while" he explained to a puzzled-looking Mychael. "I can try and do the same for Albatross, but I'd need your help. I don't think Albatross trusts anyone else besides you, yet."

Once again, the antics of

Once again, the antics of dragon and rider broke through Eira's cool glower and she slapped a hand over her mouth to cover up a giggle and the smile that accompanied it. Before she could further her interogation of Mychael, Eslig's behavior finally drew back her attention as he explained himself. Behind her, Driftwood lifted his head over hers, canting it in bafflement. He looked to his rider questioningly, who returned the glance before focusing back on Eslig and Albatross. "Does that happen with all dragons? I've never thought about.... realigning.... Drift or Hael before..."

Her gaze flicked back to Mychael at Eslig's question to him, still closely watching him for his behavior and reactions.

((I am very sorry to say but I am very sick (I even had to skip the last 3 days of school) and thus I most likely won’t be able to get on that much for the next few days. Could someone please control my OC’s while I am away? Thanks))

Pause for thought

Eslig frowned at Eira's question as he pondered a possible answer.

"I don't think so..." he replied after a moment's silence. "I only adjust Ambolt because his tail sees a lot of use, and something like what Albatross needs is only because he spent way too long stuck in a net. I suppose I could look at your dragons, but my guess is that these adjustments aren't necessary except in extremem cases."

Eslig moved closer to Mychael, careful to keep his movements slow and nonthreatening around Albatross. "Run your hand along Albatross where his fins are on his back. Tell me what you feel."

Mychael didn't look convinced, but did as Eslig asked. His eyes widened slightly as his hand passed over the spot Eslig had pointed out earlier. "It's... different here" the boy said.

Eslig nodded. "Yup. It's also probably causing some discomfort as well, but it can be fixed. The challenge will be to keep Albatross calm long enough for me to deal with it. I'd imagine he won't take kindly to a relative stranger touching his back..."

Eira pursed her lips in

Eira pursed her lips in thought as she watched them curiously, resting her head on a propped up fist. It felt good, to lay her head down, which had slowly started to feel heavy and... fuzzy. Driftwood rustled his wings and tail indignantly, as if to say he couldn't possibly need such a treatment. He was a loosey goosey. As Eira watched them curiously, a thought came to her. "Could that be part of Haelstrom's problem? Why he can't fly?" Eira halted as another thought occured and she quickly added, "Not that he would let you get close to him, either..."

Mychael and Albatross... And Scuttles

Mychael looked to Albatross who by his expression did not want any part in this crazy viking’s plan. The Shockjaw shook his head and looked deeply into the boy’s dark cyan eyes as if saying “I trust you, not them.” Mychael looked up at his dragon and nodded “I understand that you don’t trust them, I don’t even fully trust them either. Though, I know you want to fly. If you trust me enough then you’ll trust him too. Just think about it ok?“ Albatross’s shoulders slumped and he mumbled a roar under his breath. Mychael knew he had to do something to help Albatross fly again but he also knew Albatross wouldn’t let anyone but Mychael touch him. “Would you be fine if I did it?“ Mychael asked. Albatross have a puzzled look as if not believing Mychael could pull it off “Good it’s unanimous.“ The boy said ignoring his dragon. Scuttles climbed onto Mychael’s shoulder and curled his tail around the boy’s neck loosely so that it hung on the front side of his other shoulder. The young rider then turned to Eslig and with determination in his voice he asked “What do I need to do?

A new medical approach

Rue, who had been occupied by her breakfast and the conversation with Eira, looked up as Eslig explained his strange behavior. Surprised, Rue let the salmon that she was holding in her hands sink down to the big leaf that she was using as a plate. Albatross' wounds weren't probably the only thing that was keeping him grounded? Eslig was talking about a whole new medical approach comparing with what Rue had learnt so far. It reminded her of Gobber's sometimes unconventional methods of healing dragons.

But to be honest, Eslig could be right. Albatross' wounds were surely hurting him a little but they weren't too deep. No muskles or bones should exactly be injured.

Interested, Rue sat up straight and followed Eslig's, Mychael's and the Shockjaw's every move. That was going to be interesting...

Making it up as we go

((I legitimately wasn't expecting that question lol. Time for a long, complicated post!))

"What do I need to do?"

The question caught Eslig off guard, and his face blanked momentarilyas he scrambled to come up with an answer.

"Uhh, let me think" Eslig said, stroking his chin and walking a couple feet away to forestall any more questions while he pondered Mychael's query. Not only was this a somewhat complicated manuver, Eslig was unsure how well he could explain it to Mychael. Then, there was the problem of supporting Albatross during the adjustment. What Eslig had in mind required a unique setup.

An idea firmly in place, Eslig looked around and was rewarded with a suitable location- two flat boulders of even height a couple feet away from each other, with sand in between. Eslig positioned Ambolt so that the Nadder's tail stretched between the two rocks, then got Rue, Eira, and their dragons packing sand around and on top of Ambolt's tail so that the sand formed a mound just above the level of the two boulders.

Once this was complete, Eslig motioned for Rue and Eira to step back. There was now a sand pile spanning the expanse between the two flat boulders, with a small bump above Ambolt's tail. Eslig turned to his friends, explaining his handiwork.

"Albatross will lie on his stomach, supported by the boulders and the sand. We'll line up the disjointed area with the small bump here" he said, pointing to the sand pile. "On the count of three, Ambolt will pull out his tail while Mychael pushes down on Albatross' back. The remaining sand will help support Albatross' body weight, but only after allowing it to move enough to adjust his spine. The difference in elevation should be enough to get the results we want."

    Mychael watched closely

Mychael watched closely as the others built a makeshift stretcher for Albatross. The boy then turned to his dragon who seemed a little worried. Mychael placed a hand on his friend’s side and whispered so only he could hear “I know your scared, I am too. Even with that said we have to be brave, I know it’s hard to be strong sometimes especially because of where we both came from… I promise that once this is over if you still don’t trust them we can fly off together and no one will ever bother us again.” The thought of leaving his new “friends” made Mychael’s heart sink, but it would be worth it for Albatross. To Mychael’s surprise, when he looked back at his Shockjaw the dragon was looking straight into his own eyes deeply, as if trying to figure out if he was lying “I promise.” Mychael repeated though this time he didn’t whisper it. Albatross nodded and then turned his gaze to the structure.

Mychael walked with Albatross over to the rocks as he didn’t want his Shockjaw to worry any more than he already was. Albatross then climbed up on top of the rocks and payed on his stomach. Mychael gently placed his hand on Albatross’s back and slid his hand down until he found the spot that was out of place “This might hurt a bit so brace yourself.” Albatross nodded and looked straight forwards with determination. “Ready Ambolt?” Mychael asked the Deadly Nadder.
