Chapter 1: Izar

This is Izar, it’s a day’s sail north of the deserted belt and a few days south of freezing to death. The islands are home to many species of dragons, both tame and wild. The wind always blows from east to west and the caverns beneath the island have been turned into dragon stables. The air that comes over the mountains is fresh and clean. Izar is at peace. Though most people refer to Izar as a single island it’s actually a small archipelago made of 7 islands, each island is connected to the others by bridges and underwater tunnels.

“Garth you’ll be late for school! You have to pass your classes if you want to train a dragon!” Kaya shouted

“Today’s just a tour of the Islands! What difference does it make!” I yelled

“If you’re going to be a boar in Ishtar it doesn’t!”

“Fine!”

Kaya’s my older sister, among the Vikings of Izar she’s considered by most vikings to be the most beautiful girl in the Archipelago, she’s been trying to fill my mom’s shoes ever since mom was shot down by a skrill. Most guys don’t get within 3 feet of her, namely since she always carries an axe and isn’t afraid of using it.

Well today’s the tour of the Islands for all the young vikings who are visiting Izar for the first time. Rather than go to Iyer to see the welcoming parade like most of the other kids did I went straight to class in Iskyn. I’d seen the fanfare of the welcoming committee too often to care at this point.

As the new class came in i noticed a few familiar faces: the Ishtar boy Grunt (like Snotlout), the Niori triplets: Emerald (a girl with thick green hair) Ruby(a girl with thick red hair) and Sapphire (a girl with thick blue hair), and Val from the Firefly tribe. A tribe that almost exclusively ride monstrous nightmares.

After a boring lecture on the history of dragons we eventually all got on a timberjack and began the tour:

The northernmost island, Ishtar, is a forest where boar and wild dragons roam. Only the hunters go to Ishtar to hunt for the village. Ishtar itself is closed off, except for a permanent hunting camp in the south, with huge gates in case the boars try to charge through. The hunters use Deadly Nadders and Terrible Terrors to catch their prey.

The next island clockwise in the archipelago is Niori. An island so rich in gold, iron, silver, jewels, and other minerals it had been mined for centuries but could still support our industry. The miners in Niroi use Hotburples, and Snafflefangs to sniff out deposits and then use Whispering Deaths to drill into the site of where the minerals are. Then they get out their pickaxes and mine until they’ve found what they’re looking for.

The third island is Mjolnir, named after the hammer of Thor. The island sits on top of an active volcano that fuels the fires of the blacksmiths, weapons makers, and metalworkers who live there. The blacksmiths of Mjolnir take pride in their work some of them using Gronckles to turn the mined iron ore and emerald graphite.into Gronckle Iron a strong but lightweight metal that gives a viking warrior an edge in combat. The catapults produced here are second to none and mass production has started on the ballista, a weapon that can throw arrows as big as trees into enemy ships with greater accuracy than a catapult.

Iyer’s main industry is fishing, and it’s people are masters of the sea. Using thunderdrums and scauldrons the Iyerians herd fish into their nets from the Iyer sea. All the salt used in the archipelago is produced here in massive salt pens with glass roofing and wooden pipes to catch the distilled water. Due to Iyer’s seafaring lifestyle most ships are built in the island’s drydocks. The ships built here are some of the best in the seas with the largest lasting 50 years before they have to be replaced. From what I’ve heard they’re building a huge ship so big it can’t fit in a single dock and is designed to carry 50 dragons, 25 catapults, 6 ballistas, and 200 viking warriors into battle should the time come. But perhaps Iyer’s most important industry is medical supplies. The doctors have Tide Gliders that live in Iyer and allow for the collection of Tide Glider saliva which has medical uses throughout the Izar archipelago and beyond.

Iskyn, is an island of towering sunstones that have been carved into libraries and research labs. Vikings go to these towers to learn about the different kinds of dragons and take courses on how to use weapons, and learn about the world. While Iskyn’s primary focus in on learning, some towers also grow sunstones. These compasses allow our ships to navigate anywhere in the known world even in bad weather. Iskyn also has observatories for studying the stars and looking for potential threats to the island. The island also has an arena for “on the job training” as Fortran likes to call it. The alchemists and engineers that live here always have crazy ideas. It was the Iskyn scientists that determined that the world was round, not flat like we once thought it was, though other tribes seem to disagree. Many different types of dragons live here including Ayre & Dance, Kaya’s Zippleback, who I’m trying to get gas from to make exploding barrels I can launch from catapults.

Aurum is the final island in the Ring and is almost at large as Ishtar. It’s primary industries are farming and logging. the dragons there help with the farming from Terrible Terrors eating the pests to Rumblehorns plowing the fields. On the logging side of things the loggers use timberjacks to cut down forests and grow them again with tide glider saliva. Beekeepers also live here, their bees pollinate the crops and they take honey from the bees with the help of Smothering Smokebreaths. Monstrous Nightmares and Deadly Nadders are used to herd sheep and yaks into their pens.

Then there’s Izar, the central island that gives it’s name to the entire archipelago Here is the Great Hall, Dragon Sanctuary where the Alpha resides, and the Signal Beacon on top of the mountain, there are also training areas for dragons and their riders on the southern cliffs. Houses dot the landscape and markets bustle with the sound of people. Most of the islanders from Ishtar, Mjolnir and Niori live on Izar and go to work in the day while the children go to school in Iskyn. Izar is home to many dragons but amongst the entire archipelago the island of Izar is the only home of the Night Fury, On Izar it’s said if a Night Fury chooses you, Odin himself has chosen you for something great. Most of our battle commanders ride Night Furies as did great warriors like Hamish the Heroic, other night fury riders were scholars influential to our understanding of dragons, Carson the Crazed, Gustav the Genius, Matt the Mad, and most recently Elya the Enlightened.

As we rounded the edge of Aurum and headed back to Iskyn I noticed one of the new girls was sketching in her book while the Triplets were trying to punch eachother off the timberjack. After the tour finished up I took the elevator down to the base of the Dragon School I noticed the same girl following me, she had long dark hair, a leather band around her head, a leather skirt, green eyes and had an axe across her back. I decided to double back and head to the Libraries to throw her off and besides I like reading and I still have to return The Raincutter's Demise.

She took the bait and followed me, I returned the book and carefully made sure she wasn't there and I went home. When I got home Kaya was already there and making soup.

"Tomorrow's your first day of class this year, don't do anything stupid" Kaya said and gave me `the look'.

"I'll be fine" I snorted back

"I heard you're in Fortran's class"

Great I'm in Fortran's class, again

On the Subject of Hackers

please read this link, it helps to identify the different types of hackers. I have hacked computers, and servers in the past (despite not being the best at code) but I never do it for personal gain. Unfortunately the hackers most people refer to on the internet are crackers so they bring a bad light on the hacking community in general. I only learned to hack code because I needed to in order to hack my microwave and other software in my house.

Don't be a Cracker you ruin it for everyone!
