Dragonmaster:The Legend of Garth of Izar

~Chapter 12: The Sword in the Iceberg~

It was sunset when I arrived in Aurum, the farming island. I could see that business was as usual here. Rumblehorns plowed the fields and the smokebreaths helped the beekeepers gather honey. The town of Aurum was an expansive farming settlement with the huts scattered few and far between. Although there was a clustered collection of huts, something that could be called a village, towards the bridges that connected to Izar, Iskyn, and Ishtar. It’s on these massive bridges between the islands that the markets existed, each one selling goods from each Island. I landed in the square of the town of Aurum and turned to the chief’s house ... or where the Chief’s house should have been. The house had been burnt down, there was nothing left but rubble, charred wood, and ashes. No one had bothered to clear it and I was about to go and search through the rubble when,

“I wouldn’t touch that if I were you” A voice called out behind me.

“Why is that?” I asked the grizzled viking.

“Because, that piece of land is cursed” he replied

“How is it cursed?” I asked again

“The old Chief of Aurum, Karl the Kind, was assasinated 5 years ago during the Dragon War, and after the war a mob burnt down his house. No one ever bothered to clean it up, the mob left it there as a testament to those who would harbor the bloodline of traitors. Now every time someone touches the remains it’s said that Thor rains down lightning from the sky and destroys them.” The viking told me.

“Then I won’t touch it” I said, though I was sure that it wasn’t Thor and more likely just another angry mob or a stray charge cell like the ones in my staff.

I pulled out my gloves and put on a jacket, then I slowly began removing the charred logs one by one. Passing them off to Riptide who bumped them over using her saddle. The ash and burn marks on the logs definitely were from dragons, most likely from a nadder or a smokebreath. As I got to the bottom of the pile I found a still intact shield with a picture of a girl riding a Scauldron beside the old chief and a ... is that what i think it is?.

I grabbed the shield and took a step backwards, stepped on a log and bounded out. I hid the shield in Riptide’s saddlebag and headed to the beach where the painting had been drawn. A certain sea stack was in the background of the painting and I had to find out if it was what I thought it was. As I was about to leave the viking who was talking to me before stepped up to me and spoke again.

"You're Bjorn the Brave's son aren't you?" he said.

"Yes, I am" I replied

"Karl was the Chief who helped the Veroldfellars settle into Aurum, he lived up to his title and believed the bounty of Izar should be shared with all in the archipelago and believed in peace. Drago did not share Karl's sentiment and..." The old warrior attempted to stop his tears.

"I believe we both know who started the Dragon War, I don't blame Chief Karl for his kindness. No one kills without reason at first, but soon killing becomes the reason. Both the question, and the answer."

"Not many know that simple truth, that it is possible to lose oneself in the quest for revenge. Good luck to you young lad, but do not try to avenge your father. He is in Valhalla now, he went down fighting."

The viking left, and I noticed the entire village had come out to watch our coversation. I gave Riptide a pat on the back and we shot into the air.

I flew over the island passing the loggers and their timberjacks, and landed on the beach. finding the rock formation that I saw in the background. I combed the beach in search of evidence to confirm my suspicions, But nothing was there, only sun and beach remained. I combed along the beach with Riptide, both of us dutifully looking for any hint of what was there. Then behind a beached sea stack something glinted in my eye. Curious I went to take a look and found a set of large icicles beside the sea stack and to my horror I found a skeletal arm frozen in the ice grasping a bullhook. also embedded in the ice was a gronckle iron short sword with a jewel in the hilt and a wooden shield. but what was most intriguing was what I found a short distance away from the sea stack behind a large rock, a small pendant with a broken chain. The pendant was shaped like a teardrop with a blue tear shaped crystal inset on it’s center with the pattern of a fire inside the crystal. the entire thing was frozen in ice. I went back to get the other artifacts from their resting place carefully marking in my journal where they were so I could present it later to Archeology.

When I overturned the shield I was faced with nothing but shock, the symbol of the Bjornsons was painted on the shield. and engraved on the sword. I hacked away at the ice with my staff, strike after strike until I hit a sweet spot and the ice shattered. I pulled out the bullhook, sword, and shield. After I threw the bullhook and shield into Riptide’s saddlebag, unscrewed the pommel of the sword, and opened a compartment that I knew was in the hilt of that gronckle iron short sword.

On the Subject of Hackers

please read this link, it helps to identify the different types of hackers. I have hacked computers, and servers in the past (despite not being the best at code) but I never do it for personal gain. Unfortunately the hackers most people refer to on the internet are crackers so they bring a bad light on the hacking community in general. I only learned to hack code because I needed to in order to hack my microwave and other software in my house.

Don't be a Cracker you ruin it for everyone!
