Dragon Naming Restrictions
hey all! i've been wanting to voice this frustration for a long while now.
why are certain dragon names restricted?
i understand banning curse words and slurs, but why ban human names? i wanted to name my new Sliquifier "Darwin" after the character from the cartoon The Amazing World of Gumball, but the game didn't let me. i was so excited to have a fishy dragon named after my favorite fishy character, only to get my hopes struck down by that infuriating "this name cannot be used" message.
my genuine question is, why on earth would humanoid names be banned?
the only even remotely sound reason i can come up with is kids naming their dragons their own irl names and it being a safety hazard, but was that ever a legitimate issue? i've literally never heard of that being a problem.
i also had a blood-red Zippleback with oxygen blue spots i wanted to name "Vena and Cava" after a vein that connects to the heart(i'm an anatomy nerd, sue me) but was blocked from that as well.
please, staff, if you won't let me have my Darwin, at least tell me why this restriction exists so i can have closure!
The naming filter is a lot like the chat filter. Things are blocked for seemingly no reason. There's also the fact that what works for some people won't work for others. For example, I've seen people state that they haven't been able to name their dragon a certain name and I have a dragon with that name. It's really weird how it works. Here's my suggestion if you want to use a name that the game blocks, put a couple x's before and after the name like this: xxDarwinxx. I've done this several times and it's never failed me. If you really want your Sliquifier to be named Darwin I suggest using gems to change his name and use the x method.
Edit: You can also misspell names to get the name you want to be allowed but I prefer the x method so I can have the spelling I want.
unfortunately both the chat and naming filters in sod are notoriously very broken. i've been muted multiple times for trying to say "i love your deadly nadder" either because it has the word "love" or "dead" in it, because kids game, right? it's nuts.
with the naming too, i have a dragon i really wanted to name Lucy after one of my pet birds that passed away but of course that wasn't allowed so I had to settle on Lusy. I hate it! I think what you said about the mods not wanting young kids to share their personal information is why most common names are banned but like, seriously? How could that even happen??
I think the best you could do is email support just to make your issue known. 90% sure they won't do anything but they could give you a clearer answer as to why the names you wanted weren't allowed.
Young people's online safety should ALWAYS come first but I feel like the devs need to do a better job of distinguishing between things that could actually put young people in harms way and being OVERLY cautious and paranoid.
Love the idea though! Darwin for an orange sliquifier... I know it's just keysmash, not sure if the filters would accept it either, but maybe you could name him "JXPFRD" as a reference to when young gumball was naming darwin with his alphabet soup? :}
Hi there!
The other posters are correct, the filter we use to filter chat and the one used to filter dragon names are one and the same. Why "Darwin" specifically is blocked is beyond me (one of my favorite cartoons too!), but hopefully once we migrate to the new chat filter you should see less aggressive filtering like that. There's no official date for when the chat servers will be updated, but the recent chat server outages have lit a fire under us to get it done and it's currently in the testing phase. Sorry for the trouble!
according to the sod message sensor the word Thawfest is banned. was going to wish my clan a happy thawfest but i guess not :(
thank you for the response! didn't expect a dev to weigh in but i'm delighted you have! i'm also delighted to see a fellow TAWOG fan, hopefully i can name another Sliquifier Darwin once the chat filters are updated. Dory is cute and all, but she needs a fishy sibling XD i found her egg in a Thawfest chest so fingers crossed i'll get another one!
i'm curious about how the filters work now, i'm dipping my toes into the coding world and i have yet to figure out how anything works beyond embedding tooltips LOL
ofc i understand if that's not information meant to be shared, but my curiosity would definitely be sated! like, how does Headmaster know when you're trying to type banned words in the chat? is it like Professor Oak scolding you telepathically when you try to ride your bike indoors in Pokemon? ah, the mysteries of SoD XD
