Ok, digital artists! I have a couple questions. Oh right, I've already said that. Anyways, what digital art app do you use? Do you have any tips for a fairly new awful artist (me)? What size brush do you recommend, and what brush do you recommend? Do you use your finger or stylus, and which stylus/ apple pencio do you use? Also, I will be adding my attempts that I want constructive criticism for, so yeah. It's not that good. So yeah. Thanks in advance!

I use Photoshop and Procreate. I can recommend either for both beginners and advanced artists. Procreate however may be a bit more newbie-friendly with a less steep learning curve. Unfortunately it's iPad only. If you have one, pay those 10 bucks- it's very much worth it. You can get photoshop on most platforms and I recommend sailing the seven seas for it.

For brush sizes, that is 100% personal preference and any advice regarding it will not help you, but it might cause you to stagnate. A 10px brush in software A with hardware B will look different on software Y with hardware Z. Just pick the sizes you like!

For beginners I'd recommend any hard brush. Try not to use soft (air)brushes too much until you're confident with your planes- it's easy to overblend with a soft brush. You can always blend your stuff later. Try experimenting with brushes until you find brushes you like.

I use a Yiynova tablet for Photoshop (with the styli that came with it) and the Apple Pencil 2. No fingers! The benefit of newer styli is that holding it to the canvas differently has different effects depending on tilt. You can just use the tip of the stylus for crisp, thin lines, or the entire side of the tip for thicker, softer strokes. Just like a real pencil! Fingers can't replicate that.

ETA: I disagree with people who say that one would need many layers. I super-recommend against doing this. Layers are useful and convenient, but you should never overuse them. It's better to learn to correct mistakes without relying on layers all the time, and draw or paint without relying too much on special layer modes to pick the colours for you. Personally I like to use layers to seperate the fore- and background, and post-processing. Sometimes when I'm unsure how to proceed I tend to create a new layer for quick deletion if an experiment doesn't work out, so I don't have to do another paintover.

Sure, there are cases where you do need many layers to work with, but generally, try to use as little as you can get away with. It'll teach you to make fewer mistakes, and will help your artistic growth.

I use MediBang paint and for now I use my finger. I haven't got any good device and there are hardly any styli that are compatible with a kindle (Just... don't get a kindle fire. Ever) so I can't recommend any styli.

Back to the app: MediBang is quite good! Great for sketching. It can lag, but the amount of different brushes and being able to make custom brushes outways that.

There seems to be a sudden boom in digital art ask threads today :O

I already stated my preferences in another thread, though I highly agree with Varku about the airbrush thing.  Usually, newbie digital artists would go for airbrush instead of a solid brush, because you need a precise hand to make smooth lines (unless you'd use a pen tool). Now there's nothing wrong with using airbrush. Just not use it exclusively to create your work x'D

Tips for a new digital artist... Uhhh...

  • References. Don't be afraid to use references. If you're gonna draw an apple, you gotta know what an apple is or usually looks like at first.
  • LAYERS. SEPARATE YOUR SKETCH LAYER OVER LINEART LAYER X'DDD
  • CTRL + S is your best friend. When your art program has a stroke, even if it crashes you'd feel safe that you managed to save those 2 hours you've spent drawing that nose.
  • Sign your name/code name/ nickname and date over your art. I learned that it helps me keep track when I finished the art, and I can compare my progress over the months. Also I like it when people sign their names/usernames over their art. I see a lot of artists online post their cool art, but either the original source of their art was deleted or I can't follow them anymore.
  • Credit sources. There are times that we feel inspired by another art or photo. Especially if it's not an open-source art/photo, you could credit it by putting the link to the source along with the creator's name.  I guess it's not necessary for stock photos, if they are free-to-use by the public.

Lightning thought the subject was trying to attack me... RIP

I saw a mention of MediBang paint up there, and having used it in the past I can say it's a good art app for phones.

Currently I draw on a computer and use Krita, although I'm not positive if you can get that on a tablet. It's a free software I stumbled across while looking for a new art program (the Coral Painter app I got for free when I purchased my wacom tablet has a LOT of bugs, and I was tired of hours worth of art being deleted despite saves). Krita is SUPER amazing; I find it very easy to understand and modify hotkeys, and it even has a basic animation feature!

Tips? Uhhh... don't give up, practice a lot, and critism should never be taken personally. Also if you're going to be posting your images here, half the pictures people post I am unable to see. I don't usually tell people I can't see their pictures, so if you want MY critism then either hope your website allows me to see your stuff, or use Pastepics, as it's the only one I know for certain I can see images from because that's where I upload all my stuff. Pastepics is free and doesn't require you to make an account. Check my siggy for a link if you're interested.

You seem to be suggesting that you use a drawing tablet, so I can't recommend anything here as I use a computer/wacom tablet. I will say that while I was still using MediBang I used both my finger and a drawing pen though. They have different uses... I found my finger drew more stable lines, but the pen allowed me to smoothly bridge tips together because I could see what I was doing without my finger being in the way.

Can't wait to (hopefully) see your art!

boop!

Sup... I use procreate as well, pretty useful and so many things (I still don't know what some of it does XD) but I actually was able to grow alot in my art using that app-it is 10 bucks to get, but I say it's worth it :D

As for brushes on that app, I use the hard air brush for my sketching or base and then the syrup ink for the line art and some of the designs :P

Never fear, for Blobby's here!

Hiya!  I use Ibis Paint X, it works on all devices.  Until recently, I was just doing art on my chrombook, using the touch-pad to draw.  It was very, very diffilcult.  But now I use an Ipad, with an Apple Pencil, which is pretty sweet.  My main suggestion is USE LOTS OF LAYERS, because if you get stuck on a part, you can delete it over and over without damaging the rest of the artwork.  Ibis Paint X is good for edits, too, which I know from one of your past threads that you like to do.

I think WoollyHowlEra uses Ibis Paint X too.

If you ever make another art thread on here, save me a spot!  I can never get my hands on enough art XDDD

I used to draw and edit on Autodesk Sketchbook and ibisPaint X. As free apps, they're really good! Though I currently use Procreate and this one takes the throne. I use an iPad and a Logitech crayon (A neat alternative for the Apple pencil if you don't mind it lacking pressure sensitivity feature). I still draw with my finger sometimes because it's fun XD

I've been told that the brush size depends on your preference and canvas size. Just like with traditional art, the pencil is good for sketches (Sketch with your favorite color instead of black, it feels better), and the pen for lineart ^^ Explore and play around with the other brushes in the app until you find what suits you.

Tips... I'm not an expert, but here's three that I think are important XD

1) Learn the fundamentals of art (shape, texture, form, perspective, color, value, anatomy, etc) to truly get into the world of art. Practice each element and you'll certainly improve faster! So don't just practice, practice wisely.

2) Always use references. Whoever tells you it's cheating they're speaking nonsense. If you're drawing a cat, you gotta see what a cat looks like by either seeing a live one in front of you or pictures. When you draw things from your memory, especially as a beginner, you'll end up drawing the basic shapes that your mind made to simplify the shape of the thing.

3) Layers. Layers. Layers. They're life-saving XD

Be patient (especially with anatomy, that one may give you a headache), and most importantly, have fun! :)

Light Fury flew off with my subject

Thanks for all the replies! I would make these images bigger, but then they got all squished :(. Here are a couple of peices, each with a little backstory so hear them out before you criticise em:

Dart, using my first every set base! Drawn and coloured about a week ago.

Fleck, using the same base, a Night Fury.

This is a Silver Phantom sketch, drawn yesterday in about five minutes. Don't tell me to neaten the lines please, that's the style it is.

Same style, different dragon. A razorwhip done two days ago in about five minutes XD.

When you said awful I wasn't expecting these. I like them!

For critique I'd say watch out with the dark tones. All colours are different depending on the screen you use to look at them, but blacks can differ a LOT! In the second drawing, the legs and arms have little contrast with the torso, so that causes them to blend into each other a bit. Upping the contrast would definitely help with that.

For the rest, it looks like you are doing single-hue shading (I assume multiply on a lower opacity?), which isn't bad per sé, but it's not very natural. Light does not only cast light itself, but in many cases, the light itself has a colour. It wouldn't hurt to use differing colours for your shading. For example, since your fury drawings have backgrounds, you could use those background colours in the colouring of the dragons to make everything coherent together. It'll make your drawings look more natural and lively as if they're actually somewhere, and even without backgrounds, the viewer would have a vague idea of where the subject could be! Not to mention it's really fun to play around with different colours!

I'm not too good with words, so I found this which will explain things better than I can.

I recently discovered how to draw 3D Furies, and even though this thread is kinda dead, I thought this was a good place to put them for constructive criticism. I think the first is a bit squished, so dont say 'its too flat' or something XD!

Hmmmm...

My criticisms would be:

First drawing - Their right ear (the ear behind the more visible ear) doesn't seem to follow with the angle of their face (3/4th view). Move it a little forward, and it'll be good!

Second drawing - The eyes doesn't seem to line up. Their right eye (the one nearer to us) seems to gaze lower than the left. You could try moving the right pupil's up to follow with the left's, or, move the left's down.
