I have two questions. 1. When you say that those characters are playable do you mean the original versions of them or do you mean versions of them that are dragons with the same names and personalities? 2. Is it just cannon to portal characters or are fan characters allowed? I'm asking partly just out of curiosity because I'm not sure I'm going to join yet but also because I have a mantis man fan character.
Sorry for taking a long time to reply. I'm currently on a road trip.
Subject; ????? But many people simply call him Bugs or the bug. Appears to still have some human intelligence left unlike the members of his kind that were k.illed off after their creation. This may be why he is still around. Only about as safe as anything else in Aperture. Approachable but can be dangerous if hungry. Can eat a variety of foods without harm thanks to his human side but has a very strong preference for meat.
Seems to enjoy birds in particular though that may be because they are one of only a few animals he has access to fresh. Still this may be a reason GLaDOS doesn't work too h.ard to k.ill him after the potato incident happened/happens. (I don't know if this is a retelling of the story only with dragons/a dragon in place of Chell or something that happens after that happened) He also makes a fun obstacle to put test subjects up against assuming GLaDOS can catch him first. It's not so much that he would be able to outsmart her (he wouldn't) he just spends most of his time in the deep decaying parts of Aperture where GLaDOS has a little trouble reaching.
Can fly but that flight is clumsy and it more often than not it ends in him crashing into something so he doesn't do it very often. Even a half asleep gronkle would probably outfly him in most cases.
While a much larger threat to humans than something as large as a dragon it should be noted that he has a very strong grip in those sharp claws of his and he can also deliver a nasty bite. To a dragon it is not usually fatal but it is unpleasant nonetheless and will leave a mark. It may even break the skin.
I have two more characters I may add as well depending on how many people join and if I'm allowed to have three characters. They are a human and a defective turret who work together to avoid being destroyed. Like the mantis man they also hang out in the deep parts of aperture. I don't have a visual for them though. The turret's name is Tripod (named by the human) and the human doesn't have a set name but I'm thinking of calling him Rizzo which is the same name I used for a human in another rolplay. (Named after the muppet rat) This way I can have some characters who are sane because the mantis man may switch back and forth between being a good guy and a bad guy.
This may be an important question given that so far not many people have signed up. How many people are needed for you to want to RP? I'm the type of person who will rolplay even if it's just one person to rolplay with but I know not everyone is like that and some people prefer groups.
Also another important question. Is this a retelling of one of the game's storys (I'm assuming portal 2) or does this take place after that?
Lastly not a question but a comment. If this does end up being between the two of us I'm willing to play a few cannon characters if there are ones you'd rather not. (I'd be just as happy sticking to my own too but I figured I'd offer anyway) Just don't give me Wheatley. I'm not sure I can mimic his personality very well. Actually I'm not 100% sure I'll do an amazing job on any of them but while I think I could do ok on the others I'm pretty sure if I did Wheatley it would be terrible.
((I've heard their lines before. But it takes more than knowing the lines to play a character. You have to understand what's going on in their head to play them right. Characters such as GLaDOS it's easy to see what's going on in their head. You can hear it in their tone. With Wheatley however he's always all over the place and while there are many people who can kind of pick up how he thinks I seem to have trouble with him.))
"Well. Look who finally decided to take their first breath." The AI commented as she stared down at the hatchling through her camera. "In all honesty I thought all of you were goners and I was about to throw you away if you took much longer." GLaDOS was definitely not the most caring being in the world. Even on a good day her voice had a hint of sarcasm in it whether she was actually being sarcastic or not. She gave the hatchling a thorough scan to check for any birth defects that might get in the way of future testing. While she was at it she scanned the other eggs. "All the eggs were unsuccessful. All but one." she mumbled (well it had the tone of a mumble but anyone in the room could hear it) then she turned her attention back to the hatchling and said "Welcome to aperture." But of course GLaDOS being...well...GLaDOS even the welcome wasn't very warm. In fact she sounded kind of annoyed because she had been waiting for these dumb eggs to hatch and was a little annoyed that only one had made it after all that careful monitoring.
Edit; ((I just assumed it was ok to take the role because it was open. For anyone who may jump in later however it should be known that if someone else wants to play her they may do so.))
((Thanks. I'm trying my best. Don't expect the same quality if I do Wheatley though))
The voice of GLaDOS came through the room again. "Not very frightening for a creature humans call the offspring of lightning and death. But then again human babys are pretty much worthless for testing unless you're comparing how much drool they produce. At least YOU can walk. Maybe you'll suprize me. I suppose I should introduce myself." Some of the pannles in a wall opened up and a claw came through to pick up the hatchling by the scruff of their neck. (GLaDOS had heard this was how many animals that care for their young carry their young and she did not want to risk damaging the little creature before she got any use out of it.) The claw pulled the hatchling into a intimidatingly large room with similar movable pannles for the walls and floor. More so the walls than the floors but still. In the center of that room was the AI herself hanging from the ceiling because that was normal for her and she wasn't exactly the most mobile being ever. Though being immobile wasn't a huge problem for a ruler when they could physically control nearly everything they were ruling over. GLaDOS told the hatchling "You may call me GLaDOS if and when you learn to speak. Actually, now that I think about it. I don't even know if you can understand me. If you can understand me jump once."
((Do you have a name for this nightfury or should I just have GLaDOS call them test subject some number I make up. I'll probably have GLaDOS make up a subject identification anyway because she sure didn't seem to care about Chell's name but still))
GLaDOS commented "Hmm. Not the reaction I expected but I take it that you do understand me to some extent. That's good. But why are you upset? You don't even know what a test is." knowing the nightfury couldn't answer her in an understandable manner GLaDOS picked her up again and with a comment of "Don't struggle. Nether of us know how functional your wings are and if you fall it will be a long way down." the wall pannles opened up and the claw carrying StarShadow (whom GLaDOS probably won't actually refer to as StarShadow very often) started on its journey through aperture towards the testing area that GLaDOS was setting up.
GLaDOS snapped "Oh please. You act like I'm k.illing you. And I would know what that both sounds like and looks by the way so don't even try to fool me."
The first test chamber was very simple. Just a door and a button. As far as GLaDOS was concerned this freak out was completely unnecessary.
((I'm just assuming from your posts that she already put your character in there))
((No idea how GLaDOS would pick that up XD))
GLaDOS had thought she had seen just about anything she was going to in her life that would suprize her. She'd been k.illed. She had been put in a potato, had a bird attempt to eat her and had even had her rescuer from that bird be the very same person who had k.illed her and got her stuck in that potato in the first place. In other words she had seen some weird stuff. However this baby dragon had somehow memorized the way back to her room and had FLOWN back.
Were dragons even suppose to fly right out of the shell? She didn't know but it seemed wrong.
Further more she had even found a way both out of the testing room and into her room. (Well she hadn't exactly closed the hole in the testing room yet but again she hadn't thought the nightfury could fly yet so it didn't matter to her suprize) GLaDOS stared at the nightfury. First all the pannles on the walls flicked upward like the hair on a startled cat then flicked back down into position when the larg AI realized what was suddenly back in her room. Normally GLaDOS would have had some witty comment but for once in her life she was SO suprized she just stared back. It's safe to say that StarShadow had finally earned her full attention.
Now GLaDOS wasn't just suprized but perplexed too. So she did the only thing that might solve all this confusion and lifted the wall pannle out of the way.
"Well well well. I was wondering where that went. Oh and they're trying to do me damage. Cuz of course they are." GLaDOS told the nightfury. The test subject gave the two of them a terrified look and tried to run but GLaDOS easily blocked the human with wall pannles before making them back into one of those glass rooms that pretty much just has a toilet and sometimes somewhere to sleep but rarely anything else. Knowing they were probably doomed the human shook their fist in defiance and said some very rude things. GLaDOS seemed to ignore it completely and told the nightfury "This is called a human. Word of wisdom never lose your humans. I doubt you'll ever have humans to lose but on the off chance you do there you go." She paused then said "Since you caught them I'll give you a warning so you may ether turn away or watch if you so desire. I'm about to k.ill this one." The human visibly flinched at that and went silent as if they were bracing themselves. "Oh censored ho. Not so talkative now are you." GLaDOS told the human coldly. The human did a rude gesture in response. Again GLaDOS responded unamused "Is that really how you want to go out? Alright. Your choice." She then attached a pipe to the top of the enclosure and sealed the whole thing off completely from the rest of the room. A green gas started pouring into the human's enclosure. Considering how small the room was it didn't take long for the nurotoxin to reach a deadly level. First they coughed, then their balance started going wonky and then they collapsed.
((The test subject is not dead yet if you want something else to happen but if it's fine for them to just be an example of how GLaDOS can be sometimes then yes they're going to d.ie very soon. I can also edit the post and change it if you so wish. For example cut it off earlier as she sets it up or something. Just don't direct reply (reply to the post instead of to the general thread) because that will prevent me from editing it))
((Edit; Weird. A word got censored that is the same word as the one after it. What the heck? I wasn't even using it the way it must think but why censor one but not the other. That makes no sense))
If GLaDOS could blink she would have. Writeing now? This newborn could write? Once she got over that suprize she said "Excuse me if (replays the noises the nightfury was making earlier) wasn't easy for me to translate. I don't know if people are SUPPOSE to automatically understand that but you are the first nightfury I've met so it isn't exactly second nature. That's what you are by the way. A nightfury. I just remembered I forgot to tell you that."
"You sounded like you lost your mind." Replied GLaDOS after which she explained "Most beings aren't so smart as to realize such a thing is a problem and alert someone to it right after birth. When most beings your age make noises like that they're usually just mad and sometimes there isn't even a reason why. Very irritating really. It's not that I didn't believe you. I just didn't know you had something to say because most beings your age don't have something to say. In fact I've only seen this type of automatic intelligence in AIs before you came along."
Thinking out loud GLaDOS grumbled "Given all this new information I'll have to tweak things a bit." The sound of walls moving could be heard for a few seconds then the AI said "There we go. That should be more adequate to your talents. Now the first two will be the same. I did not tweak them and quite honestly you may feel that they insult your intelligence but it's just protocol so don't blame me if they're boring." The first room just had a button and a door.
The next test was something geared specifically to the nightfury. It was essentially a giant wind tunnel. GLaDOS explained "Now that I know you can fly I want to see how long you can fly. Don't feel bad if you end up dropping out earlier than you want to. Being upset can slow testing and besides you aren't anywhere near full size yet."
GLaDOS did her version of rolling her eye then pulled the hatchling off her head with a claw. "What are you doing?" She asked.
GLaDOS meanwhile was a little annoyed that her new test subject could so easily escape the test chambers. Escaping test subjects was how bad things happened. She decided to search them for holes and plug any she found before she started her next test. She was glad this particular subject did not seem to bear any bad intent but it wasn't likely she would admit that.
GLaDOS audibly sighed (Which wasn't really sighing as she had no lungs but she did make a noise like a sigh) then said "You remember that human who came in here with vengeful intent? Stuff like this is how that happens. It must be fixed. ....And while I'm talking about that just so you know test subjects stay in the test chamber until I say otherwise. That includes you no matter how much you like me."
Things went normally for a little while. GLaDOS wasn't sure she wanted to do anything really dangerous with the nightfury until she reached full size as k.illing her early would definitely destroy the chance of seeing the full potential of what a dragon could do. Part of her really really wanted to go full out and see what a nightfury looks like dodging bullets and spikes but she restrained herself and the most dangerous thing in the tests were lasers. None of which were dangerous if you didn't dumbly walk or fly into them. When the round of tests was over she did something she rarely did for her test subjects and that was to let the nightfury out of the test chambers to give her something to eat. "Don't ask what it is. It's meat and that's all you need to know." GLaDOS said. She didn't want to admit that even she herself didn't know what was in that can. She just knew it was edible from a scan.
((Remember how she wanted to make bird monsters? Well I bet if she heard of dragons she would immediately want to use them as her bird monsters since she probably couldn't make the crows she had grow to the size she wanted without messing with their genes and while there are lots of things I know she can do I'm not 100% sure she would know how to do that. Or if she did that she would be able to control them. Aperture's last attempt at genetic modification didn't go well. I'm using this as another reason GLaDOS doesn't just k.ill her and another reason she may be able to grow an attachment to her as a side effect of keeping her around))
GLaDOS was both suprized and glad the nightfury liked.....whatever that was. It would have been awkward if anything else happened. She also wasn't entirely sure how she felt about the way this dragon constantly wanted to be in her room. Given what usually happens when people came in her room it made her a little uncomfortable. It was like part of her was expecting the nightfury to randomly turn on her but she pushed that part of her to the back of her mind with the dissision to keep an eye (or camera) on the hatchling at all times. At least this inclination to be near her meant she didn't have to mentally chase her all over the facility and one person in your room that likes you is a lot better than someone who doesn't so GLaDOS gave the nightfury an unusual amount of tolerance. No other test subject was allowed free reign of her room like that. Even P-body and Atlas had to at least knock first. In fact from a look the two of them gave when they happened to see what was up they looked like they might be a little jealous. GLaDOS chuckled to herself at that thought. She had tried ages to get them to be jealous of one another to get some exiting fighting going on but it had never happened. Then this nightfury comes along and they become jealous at the drop of a hat. How funny. Of course she shouldn't be sure it actully was jealousy unless she tested it but that was for another time.
