I thought I might get this chapter done a couple of days ago, but school homework pushed it back.  Plus, I was getting back and catching up on sleep from my family camp I went too over the weekend and weekstart.

One of my favorite things to do each year there is: Archery Tag.  It is a mixture of Lazer Tag and Dodgeball... But with bows and arrows.  The bows are simple bows and the arrows have a huge marshmallow size flat foam cylinder on the end of them.  I am getting better at the game.  So much so... I feel like I am actually Jarl Mollerson now!  At least in the simply shooting an arrow aspect.

The object of the game is to tag each player on the side until there are none left, or shoot out five foam targets in the middle to secure the win.  If you shoot an arrow and the other player catches the arrow by the shaft, not the big foam end, then like dodgeball, the person who shot the arrow is out.  And the foam targets to shoot out are so easy to shoot out.  Though foam, they are extremely stiff foam and the targets will take multiple hits sometimes several hits to knock out, even if standing only five feet away.  That five feet area on your side, the players cannot fire their bows in, but can pick up arrows.  The whole "map" or course is about fifteen yards long and about ten yards wide.  And, btw, we also wear protective masks that look like the front part of a dirt bike helmet.

I stayed in the back of the small course, out of range, and fired longer shots.  Instead of shooting the stationary targets, I waited for someone to move.  I was able to get probably 5 players out by leading my shots, guessing where they might go, and tagging them from the longest point possible.

There was also varying age ranges playing, from 6 to 20+ with a few older adults (parents) in a one or two of the games I was in.  So, targeted more of the older kids or adults.  What was also cool was, when one of the older kids would duck behind cover, I would knock my arrow and pretend like I was aiming away from them, but my eyes were watching them.  If their head or bow (if you tag a player's bow, it still counts as a hit) popped up to either shoot me or someone else, I turned and fired at them.  They thought they would only be visible for a few seconds... But it was a few seconds too long.  Nailed a few in the head, bow, and sides.

I am much better at aiming an arrow and pulling back far enough on the bowstring to get the arrow to or near my target (if they dodged).  The bows are simple enough, it is difficult to get speed and power on the shots so it is possible to dodge the arrows.  But, the older kids and adults (if they have done Archery Tag every year) can get enough speed on the shot, it is more difficult to dodge and catch the arrow.  I almost caught an arrow, but I have more fun trying to dodge arrows.  I didn't get hit as much as I did last year, but I still got hit; mostly in the legs.  Sometimes it is funny to watch the kids go to great lengths to dodge an arrow, but had they not, they would have gotten hit.

Now I just need to learn parkour and I will be a real-life Jarl Mollerson  :P  That and find a 900-pound sea-dwelling dragon that's a Thunderdrum and goes by the name of Fredrick.  XD

Alright, now for the chapter.

Hope you guys enjoy!

The Crimson Storm

Chapter 8

Duo of Anarchy

We arrive at the island according to plan, leave Johann with the dragons, grab our weapons, and then sneak through the forest until we come upon their camp.  Keeping a low profile, we crawl the last few yards before the clearing on this side of the island.  The clearing is made up of a very sandy dirt, probably more sand than dirt.  We are able to bend some branches on the bush line in front of the tree line to see what is going on.  Laying on our stomachs, we prop ourselves up on our forearms to look around.

Heather whispers, “I count ten mercenaries.”

Annabeth in a low voice, “I think there were a few more goons than we see here.  But we did not come across any of them while easing our way through the forest.”

I add, “They could have left some back where their place of operations is or report back to who hired them.”

Heather asks, “Do you think they are working on their own or are hired help?”

“I’m not exactly sure,” I reply.  By the way, the goons are merely standing around waiting for something; I continue.  “I am sure they were hired to stop us from interfering with Viggo’s little convention.  For the fact that Viggo happened to ‘mention’ a rumor to tomb to every foe my crew and I have faced since starting our adventures, that is not coincidence.  I almost feel flattered to be in Viggo’s sights, thought he might be too busy with the Dragon Eye business and whatever to pay attention to me and my friends.”

Heather makes a cautious face and has a similar tone, “I don’t know if you want to be in Viggo’s sights.  To have been not paying attention to you for so long and to now suddenly pull nearly every stop to try and capture you, something is up.”

Just then a mercenary comes around from the northern part of the shore, rounding the corner of the forest, and enters the clearing.  The thought of him finding Johann, came across my mind.  If he had thought, Johann would have been with him; not to mention we would have heard dragon fire.

“I wonder if there is any more?” I question.

With the air around us becoming still, we try to listen in on some things if we can.

I can hear the conversation of the mercenary that came back and one other, the one returning says, “As far as I can tell, there is no one else on the island but us.”

The other goon comments, “Though we are down man.  Um, what was his name?”

“Eh, does it really matter?” the first goon answers.  “He was the new guy anyway.  Besides, we all know the risks because that is what we sign up to do… As long as the price is high enough and we get paid in the end.  If one of us goes down, then it is a slightly larger cut for us.  But, none of us should get any ideas, because this operation will need all hands-on deck for we need all the help we can get.”

“True,” the second goon agrees.  “Who shot ‘em?”

The first goon replies, “I think it was the Everdeen dame.  Hear she’s related to Dagur and thus good ‘ol Oswald himself.  Shot what’s-his-name in the back no less.  Whale of a shot though.  The rookie thought he could take out Mollerson on his own.  He got over confident and he paid the price.  From what I learned from Mollerson’s, um, ‘friends’ where Mollerson is, there I one of his friends close by in a place where you least expect them.  Gotta give ‘em credit, they work very well as a team and cover each other well.  The rookie thought everyone else was occupied and so thought he had a clear shot at Mollerson.  Even if they are, they care so much about each other -especially Everdeen and Mollerson so I’ve heard- that they would stop mid-battle and come to the aid of their friend while still trying to fend off attackers.”

“Another heir to the throne?” the second interjects.

“Yeah, but that isn’t what we are after, at least not what we were hired to do,” the first continues.  “The Berserker siblings are desperate to find him.  So, by using our contacts we had a tip Oswald himself was coming to this island.  Oswald will be good for it.  Hold ‘em for ransom from Dagur, Heather, and Annabeth, we will be sure to get a nice load from them.”

“Is it wise to cross a Berserker, especially it be one Dagur the Deranged?”

The first responds, “I’ve got that figured out, don’t worry.”

They continued talking about something else, but a stiff wind came in from the west muffling the sounds beyond the point of being able to hear anything.  On the other hand, this allowed the three of us to resume talking.

Heather, wondering about Annabeth, questions her, “That must be a lot to deal with.  You were only trying to protect Jarl, yet you…  How are you feeling?”

“I- I really don’t know how to feel,” Annabeth replies.  “That was a shock to both me and Jarl when we heard the main mercenary talk about it in the tavern.  Back when it happened on the ship, it all went by so fast.  All I knew is I had to do something fast.  I reacted.”

“If you hadn’t connected with that shot, I would have never spoke to you again.  Easiest target ever and you better hit it, after all my lessons,” I quip.

Annabeth lets out a low breathing laugh from the back of her throat and lowers her head, “You would try to lighten it up.  But you are right, which is actually a scary thing.”

         “That I’m right?” I question.

“No, you idiot,” Annabeth whispers and slaps me on the back my head.  “Me missing the shot.”

I smile, “There’s that too.”  Pausing before going on, I state, “In all seriousness, if I were in your position, I would have done the same thing.  Yes, of course I would save you like you did me, but if someone threatened you, Annabeth, I would make that choice every time.  I pray I do it without hesitation though because if it is in the heat of battle, not problem, but if only a few left and no battle was started yet the threat is there, I pray I don’t hesitate then.”

Annabeth returns a smile, pauses, and then retorts, “I pray you don’t miss either.”

I add, “Seriously sarcastic or sarcastically serious?”

         Annabeth responds, “Yes.”

Heather quips, “I’d shoot you both.”

All three of us chuckle under our breath.

Now we observe… Observe them just doing nothing.  But I observe something else not related: The clouds and the wind.  The stiff wind has picked up and is now blowing quite steadily.  And the clouds are getting very puffy.  Not the most technical term, but the best description.  Furthermore, the clouds’ bottoms are getting darker, becoming grayer.  There is a storm approaching.  Tapping Annabeth and Heather on their left shoulders, I point to the clouds.  They both instantly look down.

Girls’ hair and rain…  Not the best combination if you want happy friends.

Heather chuckles, “Not to use that as an excuse, but I don’t want to miss getting back in time to meet Johann’s contact.  Waiting the last half hour before I would have to go, that storm may roll in and delay Johann and I getting back.”

Annabeth sighs, but, “I understand.  Be safe.”

Heather starts to make her way out backwards, by crawling, and replies, “I think you two will need to be safe more than I.  I’m just meeting a contact of Johann’s.  What’s the worst that could happen?  Love you.”

         I quickly answer, “Thank you.”

Heather grunts and continues on her way.

Annabeth and I turn out attention back to the scene in front of us, but as we do, Annabeth remarks, “Do you always have to do that?”

“No,” I respond.  “But that is what I do best.  Yet, I am working on having it not every single time I open my mouth seemingly, but have it more focused… To annoying mah friends even more… Looks like it is working.”

         Annabeth rolls her eyes.

After that and the next half hour later, nothing happened.  Soon after Heather left, I had to adjust my positioning a little bit due to lying there for so long.  Other than that, nothing was said or seen during the next half hour.  However, when the thirty minutes had passed, the storm front just arrived.

Annabeth and I both visually give a quick shiver as we feel the cold front move in.  It is not too cold, just caught off guard with having to deal with a storm and the constant wind.  Now it seems like everything is happening at once.  Still unable to hear what is being said, Annabeth and I see a hand motion from we think mercenary in charge of the operation -the same guy who came after we, Heather, Annabeth, and I, originally took our positions- to the rest of the mercenaries to take their places.  They too took cover and hid in the forest.

A mercenary even took position directly in front of us!

Only a couple yards ahead of us… Blocking our view.  So, we ever so slightly each move to a side.  Annabeth to the right, me to the left, this way we can see exactly when to make ourselves known.

Half hour later… It starts raining.  Although, it is a warm rain for it being a cold front.  Maybe the cold front is cold enough that we got used to the temperature that the rain’s temperature is actually warmer, but not by much.  Had it been a warm front with the same rain temperature, I bet that it would be a cold rain.

I look at Annabeth and see her looking sad.  Shrugging my shoulders, she shrugs hers too.

A few minutes later, a voice exclaims, “Ship ahoy, coming from the north.”

Another voice announces, “Take your position.  Be ready, when I give the signal.”

Drenched by the steady rain now, Annabeth and I both look at each and see we are ready.

About another ten minutes elapsed before the ship came.  It is a small sea faring ship, but a ship nonetheless.  On it, three vikings, all male.  One with a hood and cape, and two ordinary looking vikings.  The three vikings jump out to slow the ship down to just touch the shore.  Without anchoring, they must be thinking of not staying long.  Quick escape?  Do they know it is a trap?

The first viking off the ship -the one with the hood- looks to be the leader of the three.  He approaches the mercenary that we think is in charge, or at least in charge of this group, the viking says to the mercenary with an older sounding voice, “Do you have what I ask?”

“Yes,” the mercenary replies.  “It’s right over here.”

The mercenary leads him to the center of the clearing to a couple of crates and barrels.  The viking lifts the lid, inspects something, and nods in approval.

“I will be taking this off your hands,” the hooded viking states as he motions his compatriots to pick up the merchandise; he also tosses a medium sized bag to the mercenary.  “This should cover the costs.”

But his compatriots do not move, but one says, “No, it does not.”

He starts to move towards the older viking, Annabeth immediately stands up, grabs from her belt, and opens a compartment to throw one of her bolas.  They are small, but made of Gronckle Iron; so, they pack a punch.  The so-called “friend” of the older viking pulled out a knife and started to come down at the viking.  Annabeth’s bola wraps around the “friend’s” right wrist, knocking the knife from his hand.  I jump up and instantly draw my bow, knock an arrow, and point it straight at the mercenary’s back.

         I command, “Everyone!  Don’t make a move you’ll regret.”

         Everyone froze!

“Alright, you,” I point to the guy still on the ground.  “Stand up.”

The mercenary stands up and inadvertently goes ahead and puts his arms in the air.

I then order, “Now, move into the clearing a few steps…”  He walks four strides and I say, “That’s far enough.”

He stops and the lead mercenary asks about the yak in the room, “Who are you?”

“Who am I?” I repeat.  “Who -am- I?”  I pause, “That’s not important.  Well, I guess that is to me, but that’s not the point either.  Anyway, you will kindly not hurt his man nor will you leave with whatever that stuff is, or else-.”

“Or else what?” the lead mercenary interjects while crossing his arms.  “You gonna shoot him in the back?”

“Ah, he does have brain, he can reason,” I mock.

“Just like your girlfriend,” he laughs.  “Do you think I really care what happens to him?”

Thinking on it, though surprised I lost my leverage, I answer, “Come to think of it, no.  Oh well, thought we could do this the easy way.”

Annabeth comes over, swings her axe with the long, flat side out and hits the mercenary, I was aiming an arrow at, using her axe like a mallet or frying pan.  Annabeth strikes the guy’s stomach, he stoops over, and she finishes the job with a right uppercut to the jaw.  Out cold.

I put my arrow back and throw my bow over my shoulder, and rush into the center of the clearing.  The mercenary reaches for his sword and thrusts forward at me.  I dodge, turn to my right, go under his arm, and throw my left elbow into his stomach.  He too stoops over, I grab his arm, shove my body into him, and throw him head over heels to the ground.  I turn to see one of the compatriots coming at me while the other fights with the older viking.

The compatriot reaches out at me into a right cross; I counter with a lean to my right to dodge and a right uppercut.  He blocks with his left.  I send a right haymaker to his stomach, it lands, but the viking is not as stunned as the others were.  He back hands me across the face with his right hand.  I stumble back, but keep my footing.  I spot him clasping his hands together like a mace to swing at me, but I react in time to somersault to the right.  Annabeth blindsides the guy with a right swing kick to the face, knocking him down.

Assessing the situation around us, we turn back to back.  We are surrounded!

Annabeth mentions, “Where’d the viking go?”

Talking about the older viking, I look around and I do not see him, “I don’t know,” I answer.

As we start to get boxed in our circle, I ask Annabeth, “You ready for the move we’ve been practicing?”

         “Sure,” she answers enthusiastic.

Annabeth puts her axe back on her back and waits.

Annabeth inches her way forward away from me until she is about three yards away.  We start a split second before they charge to close the circle on us.  Annabeth and I turn to each other, she takes three running steps ending with her left foot on the ground a couple feet before me, I kneel and place my hands down into a foothold, Annabeth steps up into my hands with her right foot, I launch her eight feet into the air, she jumps up into a back flip over the rushing mercenaries, and I fall down on my back as all the mercenary weapons clash above me.  Annabeth safely lands on her feet, sticking the landing.

Shocked by what they just saw, I grab on my own belt, a Zippleback Gas bomb.  Knowing it will not break on the ground, especially in conditions such as this, I throw it at the stomach of a mercenary.  The bomb explodes, release the gas into the immediate area.  The mercenaries start coughing as the cloud envelopes the mercenaries around me.  The coughing makes the mercenaries retreat from the smoke enough to breath better.  This makes a lane for me, and I race out of the cloud to the south.  I grab Annabeth’s left hand to make sure we stay together.

Before anyone could do anything to recover from what I just did with the bomb…

         KAH-BOOM!

The Zippleback Gas bomb I just threw… Exploded!

Annabeth and I are thrown off our feet and to the side.  We roll over our left shoulders and over a few times before being able to look back.

A deep purple Deadly Nadder with yellow details, eyes, and a pale-yellow underbelly lands in the center of the blast as the Zippleback gas is used up.  The Deadly Nadder just shot the cloud to ignite it!  It does not stop there.  Thinking that no Nadder would intentionally shoot a Zippleback Gas cloud with no Zippleback around, plus in these elements, I see a figure jump off the dragon as the Deadly Nadder rising into the air.

The rider is a girl about five foot, six inches, Deadly Nadder gear on, light blue eyes, long brown hair with… Blonde streaks in it!

This is the same girl we saw at the tavern!

Every mercenary is either out cold or so dazed from everything, at best, they are subtly stirring on the ground.

With a unique happiness for someone who just blew up a squad of mercenaries, she puts her hands on her hips, saying, “Looks like you two needed some help.”

Annabeth is the first to respond, “You’re the girl from the tavern.”

“Yes I-,” the girl pauses as she coughs.  “I am.”

“What’s your name?” I ask, then I have to clear my throat.

“Hold on,” the girl says putting up her hands.  “I just met you two.  Yes, it looked like you two needed help,” she again coughs, as well as Annabeth.  “So, I’m not just going to tell you my name just like that.  I have been after those mercenaries for some time and they obviously didn’t like you.  But jumping them like you did, I still don’t know.”

“You can-,” I cough.  “Trust us.”

“I’m not too sure abou-,” now she coughs a couple of times.  “What is in the air?”

I smell a foul odor in the air and start to cough extensively… as if I cannot breathe!

Annabeth and the new girl are coughing the same.  The smell has such a stench that not being able to breathe forces us to the ground.  Now, my strength is starting to leave me… I am getting sleepy.  I slump down to the ground on my left side… Annabeth reaches out to me, though as I try to reach her hand… Her hand falls limp.  She is unconscious!

My eyes flutter…  I feel something push my right side… I roll to my back… Looking… Looking up… I see… See a dark cloud of very visible dust falling down and starting to land on me, in addition to the rain beating my face… And… And…

And a figure with a menacing mask on with horns coming straight off the top like a yak!  A lightning strike flashes.  It reveals the dust to be red and several figures closing in around from the edges with similar masks on.

The figure bends down to me and whispers, “A storm is coming.”

Thank you very much! :D

Because I want you to keep reading more.  Unfortunately, how I write at least one chapter a week, you can't continue reading.  Once this is a full book, then having cliffhangers like this will keep the reader reading my book.

I have always wanted to learn parkour, just never knew of a place I could learn, let alone find the time.  But with anything, if you really want to do something, then you'll make the time to do it.  Thanks to American Ninja Warrior, there are Ninja Gyms springing up in my region that is a lot closer than going a few states for.  I'm sure there are regular gyms that could teach parkour, but learning from the ninjas is what I would like to do to learn parkour.

I have a very strong feeling you will love the next chapter even more.  The link is in my signature or in the update for new chapters' pm I sent you.
