Bonfire Triple Stryke Collection
First, a nicely detailed guide on how to draw the Triple Stryke dragon from a certain angle on a digital program by a rookie digital artist. Note that guides do not automatically make you great at drawing, it just tends to help, there’s still a certain skill needed, so if it doesn’t go perfectly, that’s fine.
This guide works best with a drawing tablet and multi-layer programs.
Step 1: Basics
In a bold colour (like red or blue) draw lines for the spine, limbs and wings, circles for the skull, chest, and hips. Remember; you are NEVER better than lines and circles. The amount of times I’ve had people watching me draw and gone ‘I don’t use circles/I don’t need them’ is infuriating. They are not a beginners tool. For the foreground, just draw what is going to be directly interacting with the dragon.
Step 2: Body Building
Define the shape- they have a robust chest and a thick neck, round thin legs and two toes. The head is flat and triangular, with two nose thorns and sharp horns. The pincers have a thin upper=arm, a separate segment of armour/chitin on the elbow, and a round thick lower arm. The inner pincer is significantly smaller, and the outer starts as wide as the wrist.
Step 3: Facial definition
Elaborate on the face; the eye is round, but slightly squinted and partly hidden by the eyeridge. Since this is an ‘artists impression’ I’ve made the eye somewhat larger than the actual dragon. The head is on a slight angle to see both horns, but not so much that the edge of the snout is visible.
Step 4: Body Continued
The body can pretty much be retraced with just back plating to be added, but the tail needs more shape. The tails are bulbous, so a rounded, bumpy outline is needed.
Step 5: Admire
Spend at least two minutes looking at the full image. Use a select tool to resize and move parts before it’s too late. Leave and come back to it if you need.
Step 6: Refining
Hide the first layer or two so to properly check the proportioning. Begin adding smaller details, like belly creases.
Step 7/8: The Eye
Select the eye and experiment with positioning.
Step 9: Official Outline
When you’re happy with what you have, draw the final outline in black, or the colour of the main colour you’ll be using (but darker). It might take some bits several attempts to get right- be patient, don’t hurry parts.
Step 10/11: Foreground refining
Improve the outline of the foreground, adding some things if you want. Check with the dragon outline to make sure it doesn’t overlap strangely.
Step 12/13: Shading
Set the layer to 40% opacity. Shade the underside of the body, limbs, head, etc. Continue some lines, and connect the lines on the tail, defining the bulbs. Make it so you can tell what it is without the outline.
Step 14/15/16: Smudge and colour
+3 to 6 layers
Rather than having sharp, comic shading, smooth it out with a smudge tool. For this I use Smudge_Soft. Blend it with small, circular motions, pressing gently. On a separate layer (also 40% opacity), add coloured highlights. In this I used yellow, but can be any colour depending on what you want or the light source.
I’m going to use default colouration for this. Using a reference if needed, colour as wanted, experimenting with different splatter tools to create speckled gradients as wanted.
Step 17/18: Eye shading
The eye is best done separately to the rest of the shading, but still on the same layer. Draw a thin line just inside the eye. Smudge it slightly to remove the edge but not to make it unnoticeable.
Step 19: Admire part 2, Foreground primary colouring
Check that all of your colouring and shading is good. Start filling in the foreground with the desired colour, and on a separate layer add varied affects in different shades and tones. Erase anything outside of the line.
Repeat the steps for the foreground on the background. Sign and date it if you want, and you now have a complete drawing of a Triple Stryke!
To help people’s understanding of a Strykes body structure, here’s a drawing of the skeleton (probably not accurate, just theoretical). Honestly couldn't be bothered to retrace it to digital so put up with my phone camera
