Bioluminescence in dragons.

Hi! So, this is a bit of random thread, I know, but I was thinking about the idea of a

bioluminescent dragon, and about how I don't seem to recall there being any dragons which possess actual bioluminescence. While there are some dragons that do give off light, I'm not sure it would count as bioluminescence.

But then I started to ask myself; 'Are all dragons bioluminescent, but only in the right conditions?' Because, as far as we know, in certain parts of the Hidden World, every type of dragon glows somewhat.

So, I'm asking this: does anyone out know of any canonically bioluminescent dragons, and, what are your opinios on the idea of all dragons possessing bioluminescence?

Flightmares are techincally

Flightmares are techincally naturally bioluminescent outside of the Hidden World, although it does get it from the algae they eat rather than producing light themselves, so it might not count?

In general idk if it's bioluminescence, it seems more like UV light reflection. Dragons can probably see into the ultraviolet spectrum, so can probably see those additional markings outside, and are just amplified by some natural source of UV light in the HW (off the crystals or coral/mushroom/things?).

I also thought they might always have biolume markings and the light's just too weak to be seen in daylight but then they'd show up at night or in regular caves, so probably not.

Ohhh...I didn't think of UV markings...that might expain why none of the dragons seem to be glowing in that scene in THW where Toothless and LF are standing on the pedestal thing, as IIRC there was a large shaft of sunlight shining into the cavern, as that could mean whatever coral/fungus things that give of the UV light wouldn't grow there.  (I would post a screenshot, but cannot find one just now.)

Bioluminescence

I can't think of any dragons that possess the ability to glow on their own. The dragon that comes to mind is the flightmare, but flightmares have to eat glowing algae to be able to glow. In the same episode, we find out that other dragons can eat the glowing algae and glow too, so it's not a flightmare specific thing. This would suggest that any dragon can be bioluminescent but as of yet I don't know of any that can do this on their own without algae.

Then we come to the Hidden World, where all dragons seem to glow. Again, this is not some inbuilt biological switch which gets turned on, instead the bioluminescence comes from the outside. In this case, I think it's something to do with the fungi that grows there and crystals which reflect the light etc.

It would be very cool to see a dragon that had bioluminescence as it's own ability. Maybe there is one I can't think of.

definitions are weird

Fireworms and Toothlesses overcharge are implied to be an energy glow. I guess it could be considered a form of bioluminescense, since the light is a biproduct of their fire production thats (presumably) done chemically, so, technically? yes

Well in my opinion i would love to see Flightmare Algae Skin, I know i can earn or buy algae on events instead but it would be cool to have shiny skin,

besides that the Fireworm Queen has a glow skin so it might be something u r looking for

you can find this skin in shop>skins>stoker class

and its called Fireworm Queen Glow

I think the hidden world

I think the hidden world phenominal is call Fluorescene which is different from Bioluminescene. Bioluminescene product light on their own through chemical within animal. Fluorescene is animal with already exist pattern that only visible through UV light. HTTYD team probably got these ideas from these animals

Indeed it is. Would you expect anything less from a cat, even with wings? Everyone knows that owls are comprised of bird hardware with a feline operating systen.

Luminous Krayfin

Oh and Luminous Krayfin if we're counting SoD's dragons.

I can hardly remember anything about this expansion though so I don't know if it's bioluminescence or not.

The name suggests it is but they never make it glow in-game. I don't know if this is SOD being weird with glowing dragons or an actual name inconsistancy.

Idk those small blue dots

Idk those small blue dots look glowing to me.

On the topic of water dragon, Is Titan Shockjaw bioluminescence? It is hard to tell if it's electricity thing like Toothless or if it the deep sea fish thing...

I don't know as I don't have one but that reminded me. SOD's version of the titan thunderdrum is bioluminecent. It's got markings that stay bright regardless of lighting. Or at least....it had when it came out. (I don't know if that broke like the monstrous nightmare's ash skin or not. That ash skin use to glow and now it's just a painted on texture. So disapointing. Still cool but...it was much better with the glow)

So, apparently Flightmares can actually control the light they emit becuase of eating the alge, to dim it, but also, and ths is the bit I'm most interested in here, to increase it! Now, while this isn't really bioluminesence, it does suggest that the Flightmares possess some kind of organ or whatever that has properties related to light production, and particularly, properties of light production, meaning Flightmares are able to create light of their own accord, however only while the alge glow lasts.

I've never heard of flightmares eatting algea to dim their glow. Eatting it to increase it/start the glow is what I encountered way more often in the media I've personally seen. If they're so very spesific needing to eat algea both to light up and dim themselves it's no wonder they're so paranoid of other dragons taking their food as well as being so very defensive.

This also reminds me of a sea slug that eats algea in order to steal the chloroplasts for their own use so they can need less food to survive.
