The wind screamed delightfully past my ears as I flew along, testing my latest prototype. Out of no where a startled screech alerted me that I was about to crash, again. A black shadow fell out of the blue sky onto my back, flinging the rider from his back, and sending me into a tailspin and death spiral. I braced as I saw the ground come closer. I lay on my back for a brief second before someone landed on me, very heavily.
"Ugh! Do we really keep meeting like this?" I groaned as Chief Hiccup pushed himself off me.
"S-sorry. I didn't see you, and what is on your back?" he asked me. He stood up and brushed himself off before offering me a hand. I took it and got to my own feet.
"Uh... It's my attempt at wings that I can fly alongside my dragon with and not have to purchase a flight-suit," I chuckled nervously. "I don't always have the funds, and when I do I can't remember to buy it. So I decided to work on a prototype for a collapsible, completely user-friendly set of wings that attach like a backpack, and comes with this helmet. You pull the handles like working bellows, sort of, and hope you remember how to read the air currents. Or in my case, where in Thor's name the chief is!" I laughed nervously.
"Helena!" Valka screamed.
"Oh great," I grumbled.
"That is the thirtieth time this week you've crashed into Toothless, and my son! I'll not stand for it any longer," she shrieked as she stormed up to me.

Noche, from Smidvarg's Night Terrors. Thanks snowflake!
While I listen to Valka, Hiccup's long-lost mother, blather on and scold me for being so careless, let me tell you a bit about myself. I have shoulder-length dirty blonde hair that falls in cascades of rings, even when I've brushed and straightened it. My brown eyes sparkle like the sun, or so I've been told, and can be threatening when I get angry. Often I've gotten into arguments I won only by glaring at my adversary silently until they looked away. I have a very pale complexion, not uncommon when you consider my family was banished from the Berserker tribe, on orders of my brother, Dagur the Deranged. My fiance and our dragons had been trying to survive on our own for several months with very little success. Fergious, my Deadly Nadder, had carried us as far as he could, but he was as undernourished as we were, so that the five or ten minute flight, took two hours. And of course, there was a strong headwind, cutting our speed in half. We were within sight of Berk, of salvation, when my dragon's strength gave out, dropping all of us into the fridgid Northern seas. Herald, my fiance, had tried to keep his head above water, but he was only half as energized as I was, and sank beneath the waves. His dragon, a Thunderdrum named Bumble, was barely older than a hatchling, only a week past the egg stage. I carried all of us until weariness overtook me. I closed my eyes and fully expected to wake up in Aegis' fishy palace, feasting on sea creatures and sea greens. When I woke up and saw Chief Hiccup standing in the doorway, with Toothless peering over his shoulder, I was in shock. That was three years ago. As soon as I'd set eyes on Valka, I knew I'd met someone who was just like me, but I only saw the person I didn't want to be. Every now and then, I sit and stare out toward the open ocean and nurse my aching heart as I think of Herald and the life we could have had.
"Are you listening to me? You could have killed Toothless! And my son!" Valka yelled at me, getting really close to my face. I leaned back by instinct, and took two small steps in the direction I was leaning without even realizing it.
"Uh, sorry about that, I don't do well when people are yelling at me. My brother used to do it all the time, and I would just block him out," I said carelessly.
SLAP! After she registered that she'd struck me, her face dissolved into a mask of horror. I didn't even flinch. I'd been whipped harder, and punched by Dagur, so being slapped in the face was like twisting my ankle: painful, but bearable.
So that thing has wings? Like I said you could use for the roleplay? :D

((Yes, the prototype I mentioned has retractable wings, enabling my character to fly like a bird. I kinda borrowed the basic idea from both you and Dragonmic14... Hope you don't mind.))
Good job, i really like it! i would definatly read more.
((I promise I'll update this one quite regularly, guys. Check out my other fan fics, mentioned in my signature, while waiting.))
After Valka struck me, she reached out, horrified, to touch my cheek, where I knew it would bruise. I flinched away from her hand faster than the eye could see. I doubt even a Speedstinger could have seen me. I whistled through my teeth and Fergious flew in low and fast. I jumped on his saddle, grabbing a braided rope I made from leather strapping to pull myself up. We flew to a cave I'd practically taken over. I tugged a string as we came in through the entrance, dropping the camoflage I'd put in place. I was used to running from my problems: I'd been doing it since I was a kid. My dragon crouched upon landing, allowing me to jump from his saddle without hurting my feet, and then he walked over to his little nook he'd overtaken as soon as we chased the birds and other wildlife from the cavern. From the outside, the cave was nothing more than a crack in the mountain face, whereas inside there was a massive space that could have held a Bewilderbeest with ease and still had room for more dragons. I ran over to a basin I always kept ice in and grabbed a handful, pressing it to my cheek to reduce the swelling and bruising before it even occured.
"Ow!" I yelped when I stubbed my toe on the edge of my low table. "Oh! I'm such a coward! Moma always told me to watch my tongue. It would get me into trouble, didn't she say? Well she was right." I growled and fumed as I pressed the cool substance to my face, pacing.
The sound of wind whispering over wings drew my attention back to the entrance. Valka was hovering on Cloudjumper and they were right outside the entrance. I didn't want to speak to her, but I also knew she would see the lights from inside the cave. I tugged a couple times on a secondary rope, allowing her entry. They held back slightly, understandably so, before entering. When they landed, she dismounted and Fergious called the Stormcutter over then made room for him.
"Hey, sorry if what I said or did hurt you... I haven't been around people for a while," she said awkwardly. "Is-if you have anything you need to talk about, come find me. I'll be your listening ear."
"Good because I don't know if I can find you with this bruise," I joked with a laugh. She stared at her feet.
I put a hand to her shoulder, and she looked up at me.
"I've dealt with a lot worse than this," I said pointing at the red mark which was already starting to fade. It was still hot and sore, but the color was returning to normal.
"Oh? Would you like to talk about it?" she asked. We went over to a low counter I'd put in almost immediately. I flitted about the kitchenette I'd installed, making a light snack. Then I got out two mugs and poured two small glasses of homemade wine. I'd grown the grapes in the mountain, which created a natural area to grow them.
"Do you drink?" I inquired holding up a mug for her. She took it from me and took a bite of the circles of toasted bread and tomatoes I'd put out. There was also a small plate of cheese I made from goat milk. I took a sip of the wine and felt my courage rise within me. "And yes, I'd like to talk about it."
She looked at me expectantly.
"I-I was born on Berserk. Not only that, but my brother is Dagur the Deranged..." I started. I glanced at her face to gauge her expression. She had a kind, understanding expression. So I told the rest of my story, and finished after half an hour. "That's my life story. I haven't told anyone else. Fergious and Bumble are the only ones who know my secret, and now, so do you. No one can find out about it. I'd be banished for sure."
I was staring at my now-empty glass with such force I feared I would summon my own doom. I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder and turned, half expecting to see Hiccup standing behind me. Valka said, "No one will find out. I promise I'll keep this between you and I, until you're ready to tell everyone." I sighed with relief.
"Thank you, Valka," I whole-heartedly told her. She took one of my hands and held it between hers. Before things could get awkward, I cleared my throat and stood up from the stool. I went over to Fergious and fed him a salmon. He gulped it down eagerly, then nosed for more. I laughed and fed him a chicken leg.
I really like it. great job!
((Thanks. In case you haven't guessed, Helena is a little buzzed because of the homemade wine.))
After Valka left I cleared away and cleaned the mess we'd made while she went home to digest my revelation. I wasn't sure if she would tell Hiccup or not, but I decided to pack a bag just in case I did get banished. Fergious watched me closely as did Bumble. I always had a hard time looking at Bumble; his actions reminded me so much of Herald, and the life we could have had. I batted away the tears standing in my eyes. No time to dwell on the past, or worry about the future. It was time to clean, then maybe catch up on my weaving. I pulled a damp rag across the counter, sweeping any crumbs off onto the floor. Once that was finished, I grabbed the broom and dirtbin, and swept the entire cave, not leaving a speck of dirt on the floor. Upon completing that task, I felt my ambition rise and I turned toward my craft corner.
"And now, for my weaving," I said softly. I sat down at my loom and used my homespun yarn, deftly tossing the wooden object that held the spool of yarn back and forth between the weft (or length-wise strands of yarn). When I did three rows, I brought the comb-like structure called the "hammer" toward me, thus sealing the warp (or width-wise strands of yarn) securely into place. I glanced at my pattern again and switched the color of my warp. I had dyed a bunch of yarn different colors to make things interesting. I had purchased some dyes from Trader Johann when I saw him once, and turned one of the alcoves into a dyeing room of a sorts. In a moment of unblemished clarity, I realized that I was unconsciously creating the likeness of the Strike Class, which according to my pattern, was exactly what I had unknowingly made. I smirked at my subconscious and resumed weaving.
After I had yawned for the thirtieth time that night, I set my weaving down and began to prepare my cozy, huge, cavernous home for my nightly ritual. Fergious and Bumble opened their eyes and yawned. Bumble immediately went over to his bunk and climbed in, sleeping in an instant, whereas Fergious walked me over to my bed and only went to his bed when I got into my hammock. I waited till he was settled before blowing out the candle on my bedside table. I took a gulp of water before rolling over and falling asleep.
((Sorry for the short posts, guys. I have a good three paragraphs written for an up-and-coming chapter.))
Five days later I was cleaning my craft corner, having finished the banner with the Strike Class symbol on it, when I heard someone land behind me. I realized who it was a few moments later when I heard clink-pat-clink-pat. I sighed and continued sweeping. Hiccup's hand on my shoulder startled me, however, and I turned around a fraction quicker than I should have. I was no fool, I knew I was falling for Hiccup. But I also knew that he was in love with Astrid, and she was viciously protective of him.
"Hiccup! What a pleasant surprise. What brings you to my humble abode?" I asked, trying to ignore the way my stupid heart picked up its speed. It was a foolish thing, loving someone who was both out of my league, and not into me.
"Well the reason I came here tonight, is uh, well, I-I-I," he stuttered to a halt. He took a deep breath and blurted out, "I love you, Helena1"
"Hiccup..." I started.
"No, hear me out! I haven't known you as long as I've known Astrid. But don't tell me I'm the only one who feels what's going on between us," he said tears springing to his eyes. His chest heaved as he panted from the force of his emotions. My heart sped up again, even as it broke.
"I do, Hiccup. It's just," I said, "this-us-it's impossible. It can never work, it,-" He silenced me with a kiss. My breaking heart soared. In my mind I knew, just as my heart did, that Hiccup and I could never be a couple. A small noise broke us apart. Astrid was standing in the doorway to my lab. She was furious. Her battle axe was gripped tightly in her right hand. I stepped away from Hiccup quickly, trying to alleviate the tension in the air. It had little to no effect, and Astrid lunged at me. She swung her axe and Hiccup moved a fraction of a second before I did. He stepped in front of me as the axe came down. I grabbed his arm and whipped him around toward my bench, where he crashed among my fluffy landing pads. He was scrambling to get up when my flight helmet (blessed thing) fell and landed on his head, forcing him to sit down with a huff. I snorted lightly before turnign my attention to the blonde who seemed intent on cleaving my head from my neck. I brought my wrist up and caught the blade with ease. The subject of our dispute pulled the helmet off and gaped at us as we were locked in combat to the bitter end.
"Astrid, I didn't hiss him, he kissed me!" I yelped as the blade whistled past my head, missing it by a scant inch.
"I know what I saw, you rotten pile of dragon dung!" she snarled in return.
"I can't be with him because of who my family is," I growled from exertion. She stopped attacking for a moment.
"What do you mean?" she hissed.
"I mean-I mean that my brother is chief of the Berserker tribe. My brother is Dagur the Deranged," I said past a sob. Everyone froze, and Hiccup slowly got to his feet.
"What? What do you mean, Dagur's your brother?" asked he with a slight stammer.
I sighed, tears welling in my eyes. Valka stepped into the room. I'd told her my terrible secret a week ago, and she promised not to tell anyone. I looked up and met first Astrid's eyes, then Hiccup's. I blinked and felt tears slide down my cheeks. I lowered my gaze and began my story.
"Dagur the Deranged is my brother. My twin brother. He banished my fiance, my dragon, and I from our home because he disapproved of our marriage. It was something our father agreed upon. He and Herald's parents arranged the marriage because they saw how beneficial it was. When he and I wer around each other, it was like magic," I whispered through my tears. Valka guided me to a seat and sat down beside me, rubbing my arms and comforting me. "Our mother died when we were ten, there's a rumor that Dagur had something to do with that too. I'm older by three hours, but we have different birthdays because we were born straddling midnight. Mom always told us we were special, that we were going to make a big change in the world. She said that if we used our abilities for helping instead of hurting, we would be hailed as the greatest Vikings in the world." I gave a half-hearted laugh. "My fondest memory," I looked up at the ceiling and wiped a tear from my cheek, "is from when Dagur and I were five. Dad, Mom, Dagur and I were walking on a beach when we found an oyster that had been broken open. Our parents called us to then, Dad set my brother on his knee, and Mom pulled me onto her lap. They each took an oyster from a nearby stack and broke them open. Inside of each was a perfect pearl. I still have it in my pendant, which was a gift for our sixteenth birthday. And my most treasured possession."
Hiccup came out of his shock in a relatively short period of time when I made my revelation. He shook his head, looked first at his mother, then Astrid, then me.
"Why didn't you tell me before now?" he asked gently.
"How could I have? You would have been just like everyone else: declaring me an instant threat. Your father knew about me, though my father made sure no one knew I existed. My brother made me quite forgettable too, being the absolutely, criminally insane leader of our tribe. I faded into the background and found a quite enjoyable life in the shadows. Oh sure I'd bask in some reflected light every now and again, but I still enjoy being forgettable," I replied, blowing my nose on a handkerchief I'd gotten from Trader Johann. I crumpled it up and held it in my tightly clenched fist. Hiccup sat down on my other side and Valka cut him a look that said it all. He didn't seem to get it, however, and wrapped his arms around me hesitantly.
"Don't," said his mother gently. "Let her have a moment." He removed his arms from me and I made a break for the door. I whistled for Fergious and he caught me as I jumped from my cave. We flew for ten minutes as I let my emotions run their course. I gripped the saddle and bent over it, sobbing loud, heartbroken sobs that wracked my entire being to the core.
Ugh! Thunderstorm, I thought grimly after I recovered from my breakdown. I bit back a yelp when a lightning bold came our way. Somehow, Fergious turned and spat fire at the incoming surge of electricity. The two attacks combined and blew both opposing forces apart. We fell toward the hard ground, and the storm was blown to splinters. Just a few hundred meters above the earth, Fergious regained control of his body and flipped back over, snapping his wings open and flying through the air faster than Hiccup and Toothless ever could fly. When we finally landed, I dismounted and stumbled into the Great Hall, the building before which my dragon had landed. He limped in behind me having twisted his ankle when he landed.
I sniffed and shivered as I found my way over to a corner, where Fergious and I sat down. I worked on his ankle, massaging it and helping to loosen the joint so it wasn't painful. I set my satchel behind me as I worked and when I finished I pawed around for it, but couldn't feel it anywhere. I looked around and almost screamed in alarm when I saw Hiccup, Toothless, Valka, and Cloudjumper standing not far away. Cloudjumper had my satchel on one of his wing claws, and I turned to my Nadder's saddle to keep from losing it.
